- 0:00Lady Gaga: I'm crying.
- 0:01Sean: I know, it's the show. And just be careful around your eyes.
- 0:04Lady Gaga: Okay. I won't touch my eyes. Sean: Just be careful around your eyes, you know?
- 0:06Lady Gaga: Is this safe?
- 0:15Sean: Hey, what's going on, everybody? For <i>First We Feast</i>, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching
- 0:18<i>Hot Ones</i>. It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
- 0:21And today we're joined by Lady Gaga.
- 0:23She's one of the most decorated multi-hyphenate stars of a generation, a 13
- 0:26time <i>Grammy Award</i> winning singer, songwriter, with a pair of <i>Golden Globes</i> and an <i>Oscar</i>,
- 0:29as well, for her work in TV and film.
- 0:31Her latest single, "<i>Abracadabra</i>", is out now with the next studio album coming
- 0:35very soon. And of course, we can't wait for that. Lady Gaga,
- 0:38welcome to the show.
- 0:39Lady Gaga: Thank you,
- 0:39Sean. Sean: What's your mindset like going into this interview?
- 0:42Are you a spicy food fan,
- 0:43by nature?
- 0:44Lady Gaga: I, you know, I do like spicy food, but I'm, like, feeling like I'm saying that now,
- 0:49and then it's gonna be really easy to make fun of me if I, like,
- 0:52can't handle this, so...
- 0:54But, I'm focused.
- 0:55Sean: I can see
- 0:55that. Lady Gaga: I'm determined.
- 0:57Sean: Locked in. Step by step.
- 0:59Are you ready to get started?
- 1:00Lady Gaga: Yes. I just keep staring at them.
- 1:20Okay. I'm gonna eat with one hand, 'cause I'm...
- 1:23Sean: Almost by necessity.
- 1:24Lady Gaga: ...fashion impared. That's good.
- 1:38Good. I like it. What's in it?
- 1:41Are you gonna, is this... This is not, like, a culinary show.
- 1:44It's like, just get the wings. Sean: No. But, you know what? You can, you can stress test me.
- 1:46All right? I'm ready for it.
- 1:47Lady Gaga: What's...Okay, so you said garlic, lemon.
- 1:49Sean: Garlic, lemon, and then it has, like, an avocado oil out of Brooklyn,
- 1:52New York. And so far, it looks like we're one for one.
- 1:55Lady Gaga: I think it's fine. Sean: There we go.
- 1:56Lady Gaga: Good.
- 1:57Sean: So, I like how hyped you get about production.
- 2:00Like, the excitement that you express over the spicy scents on "<i>Disease</i>".
- 2:05Besides your own vocal performance and songwriting,
- 2:07what are the elements of production or sound engineering that you find yourself obsessing
- 2:11over most while making an album?
- 2:13Lady Gaga: I feel like when I'm making a record, it's about, like, figuring out how I'm going to
- 2:19hone in the sound, from song to song, to make the album feel holistic.
- 2:25And it's about, like, choosing the analog synths.
- 2:29It's about figuring out what guitars we're gonna use.
- 2:31It's about figuring out what the, like, the tone is of the piano on the record.
- 2:36But, always at the end of producing an album, I kind of revisit every single song to just,
- 2:43like, completely hone in my vision for how it should sound.
- 2:51"Lift Off". I don't think I can lift off in this dress.
- 2:57Thai flavors.
- 2:58Sean: Mhm.
- 2:59Lady Gaga: Yummy.
- 3:00Sean: Citrusy. You catch the, uh, kinda lemongrass.
- 3:02Lady Gaga: Yummy.
- 3:03Sean: After, there.
- 3:04Lady Gaga: Yeah. Really good.
- 3:05Sean: There we go. Two for two.
- 3:06Lady Gaga: Yeah, I like them both. I think I like the first one better, but it was good.
- 3:09Sean: That's all right. We'll keep the power rankings in our head,
- 3:11as we work our way through. Lady Gaga: But, this is where we're starting?
- 3:13Lady Gaga: Yeah. Right. Right. Yeah.
- 3:16No, it's a humbling
- 3:17show. Lady Gaga: This is at the front of
- 3:17the class. Sean: I know. Lady Gaga: Okay. Sean: I know. I know.
- 3:20So, in the past, I've asked actors about the qualities that make for a great film
- 3:24director. I'm curious for you, what are the most important traits that you
- 3:27look for in a music producer?
- 3:29Lady Gaga:: I still feel like I did when I was a kid.
- 3:31When I write songs, like, I get so excited about every lyric and every
- 3:35melody and what it could mean, and then talking about how to bring the song
- 3:40to life. So, I definitely feel like a collaboration is super important,
- 3:45child like spirit. Um, and uh, yeah, like musicianship.
- 3:50Sean: And sometimes you'll get just as excited talking about studios,
- 3:53you know, like when I hear you name check them, sometimes you'll talk about them with
- 3:56such intimacy, like laying down roots at "Shangri-La",
- 3:59for example. I'm curious, is there, like, a vibe or, like, a tone or
- 4:03things that you look for that make a studio feel like home to you?
- 4:07Lady Gaga: You know? Sorry, I just...
- 4:09Sean: Yeah.
- 4:12Lady Gaga: Swalllowed a little bit more of that out loud. Sean: It's, it's the show.
- 4:13It's the show. Lady Gaga: It's perfect.
- 4:15Um, for me, the home feeling of a studio comes from the music.
- 4:21So, I actually find that I can, like, build that home feeling wherever I go,
- 4:26just because I become so obsessed with what we're doing,
- 4:29that the space kind of takes on a new life.
- 4:33But, I do really love "Shangri-La".
- 4:35It's really close to my home.
- 4:36So, um, I do love being there.
- 4:39But, yeah, wherever the music is... Sean: That's home to you.
- 4:42Lady Gaga: I'm about it. Yeah. Gorgeous.
- 4:50So far, I think I loved the first one the most.
- 4:55But, I don't know if it's because my tongue started going numb by the time we got to this
- 5:00one. What was your favorite?
- 5:02Are you allowed to say? Is he not allowed to say? Sean: No,
- 5:05i can, I can say. I can talk.
- 5:07Lady Gaga: Okay.
- 5:08Sean: But I don't wanna... here's the, it's a little leading, though.
- 5:10'Cause we actually make this third one.
- 5:12You know what I mean? Lady Gaga: Okay. Sean: So, actually I don't... Lady Gaga: Oh,
- 5:14you do make...
- 5:14the third one? Sean: Yeah, yeah. Lady Gaga: So, you love
- 5:16the third one? Sean: The third one's so good. Lady Gaga: The third one...
- 5:18Sean: It is so good. Lady Gaga: Hot Ones.
- 5:19I see it now. "Hot Ones
- 5:20Sriracha". It's so funny. Sean: Thethird sauce.
- 5:22Lady Gaga: You guys waited 26 episodes before you slid yours in there?
- 5:26Love that.
- 5:27Sean: So, you once compared writing "<i>Born This Way</i>" to immaculate conception,
- 5:32saying that you wrote it in ten fucking seconds.
- 5:34Lady Gaga: Oh, my God. I said that?
- 5:36Sean: Yeah. That you wrote it in ten fucking minutes.
- 5:39You wrote it in ten fucking minutes.
- 5:40Lady Gaga: I did write it in ten minutes, I can...
- 5:42Um, sorry. Now I'm losing speech...
- 5:44Sean: All part of the show. Lady Gaga: ...from it.
- 5:46but, uh, I did write it in ten minutes. For "<i>Born This Way</i>",
- 5:49and a lot of my songs, I hear it pretty quickly,
- 5:52and then I just have to follow it.
- 5:54To me, when I'm making music, I'm, I say that I,
- 5:57I'm listening. So, it's a feeling of receiving,
- 6:01which is, probably, why I made that really dumb comment about myself.
- 6:06Sean: And then one of my favorite quotes I've ever heard from a singer, songwriter, also comes
- 6:10from you, where you said: "Without a good chorus,
- 6:12who really gives a fuck?".
- 6:13And I'm curious...
- 6:14Lady Gaga: Oh, my God. Who gave you these quotes?
- 6:18Sean: But, how do you know when you've cracked the code on a hook?
- 6:20Like, is there a tell?
- 6:22Lady Gaga: Sometimes, I know something's done because that image feels whole to me.
- 6:27But, you really don't know if something is good until the people tell you.
- 6:32Sean: And they will tell.
- 6:33you. Lady Gaga: And they will tell you.
- 6:39You're, like, cheering me on.
- 6:41Okay, I like that. Oh, okay.
- 6:52Sean: It is. We're in the game now.
- 6:53Lady Gaga: Yeah. Peppery. I like it.
- 6:56Sean: That's why they call it <i>Hot Ones</i>.
- 6:57Lady Gaga: It's the most hot one, so far.
- 6:59Sean: Yeah. Lady Gaga: But it's not the "Hot Ones" one.
- 7:01Which is my favorite.
- 7:05Sean: Do you have a most harrowing onstage memory, reflecting back on those early days
- 7:10performing on the Lower East Side at places like "The Slipper Room" or "Mercury Lounge"?
- 7:14Like... Lady Gaga: Yes.
- 7:15Sean: Did you ever have to deal with hecklers or singe someone in the front rows eyebrows off
- 7:19with a hairspray fireball?
- 7:21Lady Gaga: No. I, I shouldn't have done that.
- 7:23Lighting hairspray on fire. I should not have done. But, um,
- 7:27I remember when me and Lady Starlight were given a residency at "The Slipper Room",
- 7:32and I was so excited. It was such an honor to be asked to perform there.
- 7:37I remember I made my outfit for my "Slipper Room" show.
- 7:39I sewed it myself. I just look back on that time so fondly.
- 7:44My whole day was spent trying to get those gigs.
- 7:46And I just used... I would knock on door, after door, after door and just say,
- 7:51um: "Can I, please, play here?".
- 7:53Or I would call and pretend I was my manager. Sean: Successfully?
- 7:58Lady Gaga: I would tell people, I'd be like: "She's so hot right now.".
- 8:01And sometimes I would do, like, an accent.
- 8:02And yeah, I mean, I would do anything to get booked.
- 8:06Sean: What was the most valuable music or performance lesson that you learned covering
- 8:10classic rock songs with your band, Mackin' Pulsifer in high school?
- 8:14Like... Lady Gaga: These, the facts that you have, the quotes.
- 8:18You know Mackin' Pulsifer?
- 8:20Sean: Yeah. You would do a classic rock covers with that band. Lady Gaga: Yes.
- 8:23Sean: Right? Does that give you, like, any insight to the musicianship of a rock star or anything?
- 8:27Or how do you think that helped you?
- 8:29Lady Gaga: I used to always say that you have to put, like, music in the room to figure out how to be an
- 8:34artist. Like, you need an audience.
- 8:36So, I just... yeah, I learned so much being in that band.
- 8:40And so funny when I met Bono for the first time,
- 8:43and then I'm like: "I used to sing "<i>Pride</i>" in my rock band growing up.".
- 8:48It's cool. Like, you... you learn everything that came before you and you're,
- 8:53yeah, just a student of music.
- 9:00Are we halfway?
- 9:01Sean: We are halfway.
- 9:02Lady Gaga: I'm, like, doing okay. Oh, does that have a chicken
- 9:05that, its mouth's on fire?
- 9:07Sean: Yeah.
- 9:08Sean: Fitting logo.
- 9:09Lady Gaga: Is that gonna be me? Okay.
- 9:13These are good wings, too. These,
- 9:14I think I have the, the plant based ones.
- 9:16Sean: Me too, by the way. Lady Gaga: They're good.
- 9:18Sean: Mhm. In what ways, if at all, does being a classically trained pianist
- 9:23serve as, like, a superpower for a songwriter?
- 9:26Like, how might studying the classics inform your approach to making pop music?
- 9:30Lady Gaga: Beethoven, Bach, a lot of the structure of them is very similar to a pop song.
- 9:36Um, it's the the progression of the music.
- 9:40Uh, also, the way that you learn about, uh, music getting louder and softer,
- 9:46uh, getting faster and slower, um, holding punctuations, like, all of the
- 9:50expressions of music can,
- 9:53I think it taught me how to think about where to put the drama in a pop song.
- 10:03"Volkano"? Oh. That's good.
- 10:08Sean: Yeah.
- 10:09Sean: Right. Lady Gaga: That one has a kick.
- 10:10Sean: And that's the thing about some of these in the later half, is they have little, like, time
- 10:14release on them. Or they hear you talking about them.
- 10:18You know what I mean? Lady Gaga: Time release hot sauce? Sean: And then they com eback. Yeah, exactly.
- 10:20Lady Gaga: That feels deceptive. Still good.
- 10:24Really good.
- 10:26Sean: So, there are a few high wire acts in pop culture more impressive than threading the
- 10:30needle between high art and pop.
- 10:32I'm curious, how do you think about that distinction at this stage in your career?
- 10:36Lady Gaga: You know, music is something that you hear, but then,
- 10:40you know, when you, when you add the art to it,
- 10:42it really changes the way you feel and it changes the way you think about the song.
- 10:46So, I, I, to me it is, it's awesome.
- 10:49It's an awesome, awesome piece of music is the visuals.
- 10:57I am doing good.
- 11:03Lady Gaga: I took a big bite.
- 11:04Sean: I saw that. Lady Gaga: I don't know why I did that. Sean: Because you're feeling it. Lady Gaga: You said it was hot, and I was like...
- 11:07Sean: Because you're feeling
- 11:08it. It's gonna hit. Lady Gaga: It tastes good, though. Sean: Mhm.
- 11:11Lady Gaga: But, is it gonna come and get me, like, really soon?
- 11:14Sean: I'll be honest. It's kinda getting me right now. Lady Gaga: Is it?
- 11:16Sean: Yeah.
- 11:17Lady Gaga: Are you okay?
- 11:17Sean: Yeah. You're dancing on me on my show. Lady Gaga: You're eyes are watery.
- 11:20Sean: Yeah, I know. I know. All right?
- 11:24Lady Gaga: I'm, like, trying to be all tough... Sean: Ten years in. Ten years in... Lady Gaga: ...and won't drink my water.
- 11:28Sean: Well, and same with me, by the way.
- 11:29Lady Gaga: You haven't drank your water, yet.
- 11:31Sean: I always mirror the guests.
- 11:32Lady Gaga: Oh. Sean: You know? I don't know if it's, like...
- 11:34Lady Gaga: Are you thirsty? Should I drink?
- 11:37Sean: I'll let you know. I'll let you know if I need you. Lady Gaga: Okay.
- 11:40Lady Gaga: I'm just trying to be... Sean: To break the seal forme. Lady Gaga: I'm just trying to be abad bitch and,
- 11:42like, not have the water.
- 11:45Sean: So, when we had Shakira on the show, she talked about how she bankrupted her first
- 11:49world tour, because it was important for her to have this giant 30 foot cobra with her on
- 11:54stage, which, of course, cost millions of dollars to produce and then
- 11:57millions more to ship.
- 11:59As someone who's long reinvested... Lady Gaga: Respect. Sean: Right, I knew you'd like that. Lady Gaga: Respect.
- 12:04Lady Gaga: One set piece that we built, which was, like,
- 12:06really cool, actually, 3D sculpture that Nick Knight built,
- 12:10he put me inside a grand piano, made this huge statue,
- 12:15but we just, like, didn't... it was so early in my career,
- 12:18I didn't plan, like, how it would get on and off the stage.
- 12:21It was so heavy, and the crew guys were like: "We can not get this.
- 12:25This thing is as big as the arena.
- 12:27We can't put it on the stage.".
- 12:29That was pretty expensive and a bad decision.
- 12:31I, definitely, now try to be a lot more resourceful,
- 12:34like, just make, making less and, uh, not over,
- 12:38um, over producing things, like, I just wanna be more resourceful.
- 12:42I'm growing up. Okay. Well, ready?
- 12:59Lady Gaga: Oh, God. Oh, my God. Sean: Yeah.
- 13:02Lady Gaga: Sean. I took a big bite of it.
- 13:07Sean: Yeah, I know. I saw that.
- 13:09Lady Gaga: I'm trying to deny... Oh,
- 13:11it's growing.
- 13:12Sean: Yeah. And same with me.
- 13:16But, whatever you're going through, it's okay.
- 13:19Lady Gaga: Can I have a sip?
- 13:20Sean: Yeah, yeah. You don't have to ask me.
- 13:22I'm just looking for an excuse, too.
- 13:28Lady Gaga: It's still hot.
- 13:29Sean: I know, yeah. And it'll, kinda, be like that for a little bit.
- 13:33And it might even grow a little bit from here.
- 13:35But, that's just me being an honest talk show host with my guests... Lady Gaga: Thank you so much.
- 13:38Sean: You know?
- 13:39Lady Gaga: Oh.
- 13:42Lady Gaga: Oh, my God. Sean: Yeah. It's happening. So, one time you did a cooking segment with Alan Carr, where you
- 13:48tenderized a chicken breast by just beating the hell out of it with a pan.
- 13:52Do you have any other unconventional kitchen hacks?
- 13:55You know, like, that did seem to work way better than a meat mallet ever could. Lady Gaga: I'm crying. Sean: I know,
- 13:59it's the show. And just be careful around your eyes. Lady Gaga: Okay. I won't touch my eyes. Sean: Just be careful around your eyes,
- 14:02you know?
- 14:03Lady Gaga: Is this safe?
- 14:06Sean: I made it ten years. You know? I'm still standing. Lady Gaga: You're still alive.
- 14:09Lady Gaga: Okay. Do I need the milk?
- 14:12Sean: Yeah, that might help.
- 14:17Lady Gaga: You know, you really set me up,
- 14:19too.
- 14:21Really. Just eat shit on that one.
- 14:24Sean: We kind of set ourselves up on this show, though,
- 14:27too. You know?
- 14:28Lady Gaga: No. Beating, beating, um, meat with a frying pan is,
- 14:35like, very Italian. Um.
- 14:38Oh. Oh, my God. It's making me laugh.
- 14:45It's so hot.
- 14:46Sean: I know. I know.
- 14:50Lady Gaga: I was fine. Everything was going so well.
- 14:54Sean: That's how this show goes. You know? Everything's going so well until
- 14:57it's not. Lady Gaga: Okay.
- 14:58Lady Gaga: It's like... now I'm numb.
- 14:59Sean: Yeah.
- 15:01Lady Gaga: What if I stop swallowing?
- 15:04What do you do? My mouth is, like, actually numb.
- 15:12I mean, it's, like, swollen.
- 15:18Sean Remember the last one?
- 15:20Lady Gaga: I'm sorry, I'm picking my teeth.
- 15:22Sean: Let it go.
- 15:23Lady Gaga: Look at my nails.
- 15:24Sean: Lean into it.
- 15:25Lady Gaga: These things work for that.
- 15:27It was actually, I mean, it is good.
- 15:29It's just... Oh, and now my lips are burning.
- 15:31Sean: Yeah. No, I know. Changed.
- 15:35But, this is what we do it for. You know?
- 15:38And I, kinda, come alive a little bit.
- 15:39Lady Gaga: I see that. You are thriving.
- 15:45I'm okay.
- 15:46Sean: Mhm. Did you have a biggest customer pet peeve when you worked as a waitress at, uh,
- 15:52"Palma" on Cornelia Street?
- 15:54Lady Gaga: Oh.
- 15:54More fun facts you have.
- 15:56Okay. Well, when they didn't tip, that was not good.
- 16:00Sean: That's, yeah.
- 16:02Lady Gaga: Um, I'm, you know, I'm, like, having brain... Sean: It's a lot.
- 16:08Lady Gaga: Yeah. Sean: Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot.
- 16:09Lady Gaga: Okay. Uh, what else did I...
- 16:11I always was confused when they didn't order the desserts, 'cause the desserts were really
- 16:16good, but I guess I didn't really have a pet peeve. I was really happy to have a job,
- 16:19so... is that like a bad answer?
- 16:22Sean: No, you can, you... No. Lady Gaga: I don't know if my
- 16:22answers are good anymore.
- 16:24I, this, I'm not entertaining right now.
- 16:26Sean: No. You're actually. Lady Gaga: So sorry.
- 16:27I'm so
- 16:27sorry. Sean: Actually, you're very entertaining right now.
- 16:30All right?
- 16:31Lady Gaga: I've ruined it. Oh. "The Last Dab
- 16:40Xperience". I fear it will be my last life experience.
- 16:45Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. I have to put it back.
- 16:52Sean: Lady Gaga, what a run.
- 16:54Lady Gaga: This, it's been real, Sean. This one may really be hot.
- 17:04Sean: I know. But, Lady Gaga, long last, the wings of death are behind us.
- 17:11Lady Gaga: Over 91% Pepper X?
- 17:13Sean: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Lady Gaga: Is that wat that says?
- 17:15Sean: Don't read the fine print. Not at this point in the show.
- 17:17Lady Gaga: You added more. I don't want anything to grow.
- 17:20Sean: I know. I know.
- 17:21Lady Gaga: I don't want it to grow.
- 17:23I don't want it to grow.
- 17:24Sean: But, you've conquered the wings.
- 17:26You've made it through.
- 17:28And I just have one more question for you.
- 17:30You know, you once distilled the experience, the artist life by saying: "It's a beautiful
- 17:35disco ball, that's somehow refracted and fractured.".
- 17:39With that in mind, I'm curious, what's, like, the closest you've ever come to
- 17:42walking away? You know, like whether it was a specific project or
- 17:46something more existential. Like, just the experience of being an artist.
- 17:50I'm curious what that's like from your side.
- 17:53Lady Gaga: That is an incredibly deep question to ask me...
- 17:58Sean: In this vunerable... Lady Gaga: ...in this
- 17:59panic
- 17:59mode. Sean: ...moment. Yeah.
- 18:01Lady Gaga: I missed the community that I had in New York, and that was really hard.
- 18:07So, there were definitely times where I felt like, maybe, I should walk away.
- 18:13But, I know for sure that I never would, because if... I would, definitely, say that I, like,
- 18:22was tested and I always, I always didn't give up.
- 18:27I'm still doing it. So, it must mean I want to do it.
- 18:31Sean: And you know what? You didn't give up today either.
- 18:34Lady Gaga: I did not. Sean: No quitin' you, Lady Gaga. Taking on the wings of death and living to tell the tale.
- 18:39Now there's nothing left to do, but roll out the red carpet for you. This camera, this
- 18:42camera, or this camera. Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
- 18:47Lady Gaga: So much hot sauce. Um.
- 18:51My throat's on fire, but I feel good.
- 18:56It was delicious. I think I did pretty good.
- 19:00Sean: You did great.
