- 0:24actually totally dropped last

- 1:06there's going to be a training section
- 1:08you're going to take what you've just
- 1:10learned and practice repeating it
- 1:12doing a reduction flapping a t just like
- 1:15you learned in the analysis okay here's
- 1:17the scene
- 1:19hi ali hi i'm phil we met last night
- 1:21yeah jack sent me to pick you up and
- 1:23take you to the gig
- 1:24oh my god um but i gotta i gotta work i
- 1:28i can't go he's really looking forward
- 1:30to this i appreciate that but um i can't
- 1:32leave so i'll be in my car right down
- 1:34the street uh please tell him thank you
- 1:36but no thank you okay say it just like
- 1:38that
- 1:39and now the analysis
- 1:41hi ally hi
- 1:43okay so we start off with three stressed
- 1:46words and they all have that up down
- 1:47shape hi
- 1:49ally
- 1:50hi
- 1:51uh
- 1:52notice it's not flat hi
- 1:54hi hi hi hi hi hi that up down shape is
- 1:59really important in american english
- 2:01it's what we do with stressed syllables
- 2:02high ally
- 2:04hi
- 2:05now hi
- 2:06is one syllable hi
- 2:09ally is two syllables it's the first
- 2:12syllable that's stressed
- 2:14ally it has the exact same shape as high
- 2:19but the second unstressed syllable just
- 2:21sort of falls into the line of the voice
- 2:24on the way down
- 2:25ali
- 2:27ali
- 2:29ali
- 2:30ali
- 2:31ali hi ali hi
- 2:35hi ali
- 2:36hi ali
- 2:38hi ali hi i'm phil i'm phil
- 2:41i'm phil
- 2:43which one of those has the up down shape
- 2:46i'm phil
- 2:47i'm phil
- 2:48i'm phil i'm phil
- 2:50definitely phil the word i am we barely
- 2:53even hear it
- 2:55i am becomes i'm
- 2:58but when we
- 3:00are speaking in a sentence we might
- 3:02reduce that to just the m sound or a
- 3:05schwa m um i'm phil i'm phil i would say
- 3:09it has more of a schwa m feel unstressed
- 3:12instead of i'm i'm um i'm i'm i'm phil
- 3:15i'm phil
- 3:16i'm phil i'm phil
- 3:21i'm phil
- 3:22i'm phil
- 3:23i'm phil we met last night we met last
- 3:25night
- 3:27we met a little bit of that shape
- 3:30we
- 3:31met
- 3:32last
- 3:34night
- 3:35and night has stress too but since it's
- 3:37going up in pitch this dress is sort of
- 3:39a scoop up rather than a s shape up down
- 3:42we met last night
- 3:46and do you notice how we're gonna play
- 3:48that in slow motion for you do you
- 3:50notice how it's so smooth
- 3:52everything connects
- 4:04i love slowing down speech because
- 4:05that's when we really get to feel the
- 4:07melody and notice how sloppy everything
- 4:10is as far as linking together
- 4:12no definition between words
- 4:15the word we is unstressed it doesn't
- 4:17really sound like we does it it's more
- 4:19like
- 4:26so i would actually write that with the
- 4:29it as in sit vowel not the e vowel
- 4:35okay now how
- 4:36t's are a true t
- 4:39sounds like
- 4:40this
- 4:42we stop there we release it
- 4:44every time we do that it breaks up the
- 4:46line a little bit
- 4:48because we have to stop the air and
- 4:49release so if i made the tea and met
- 4:52a true tea and the tea in last a true
- 4:55tea it would sound like this you know
- 4:57what if i made the tea and knight a true
- 4:59tea the phrase would sound like this we
- 5:02met last night
- 5:04we met to last tonight
- 5:06that's not how he's doing it at all
- 5:09we met last night
- 5:14last night
- 5:18all of those true teas change met is a
- 5:22stop tea
- 5:24we met last
- 5:26that means there's a little tiny break
- 5:29but we don't take the time to do a
- 5:30release so we stop the air
- 5:32that stop shows to us that it's a t
- 5:35we met last
- 5:44and so we hear it as a t now the t in
- 5:47last this is different it's not a stop t
- 5:50it's actually totally dropped we very
- 5:53often drop a t when it comes between two
- 5:55other consonants so even if it's not in
- 5:57the same word even if it's linking two
- 6:00words and the t ends up between two
- 6:02consonants we will drop it
- 6:04so all these words that end in an st
- 6:07cluster last
- 6:08first just
- 6:11be aware that when they come before a
- 6:14word that begins with a consonant we
- 6:16will almost always drop that t
- 6:18we met last night last night right from
- 6:23the s into the n and then we have
- 6:25another stop t here
- 6:27so the rule for stop t's is we usually
- 6:29make a t as stop t when the next word
- 6:31begins with a consonant like here or at
- 6:34the end of a thought group like here
- 6:36so it's not we met to last tonight
- 6:40no we just don't do true tease like that
- 6:42it's we met last night
- 6:44we met last night we met last night we
- 6:47met last night and the pitch goes up at
- 6:49the end
- 6:50even though it's a statement he makes
- 6:51the pitch go up and gives it a sort of
- 6:53questioning
- 6:55intonation because he's not sure if she
- 6:58remembers that
- 6:59and so he's asking it as a question as
- 7:01if to say do you remember we met last
- 7:04night
- 7:04instead it's just we met last night
- 7:07we met last night we met last night we
- 7:09met last night yeah
- 7:12the intonation going up shows it's a
- 7:13question asking for confirmation and she
- 7:16gives her confirmation yeah i remember
- 7:18yeah jackson
- 7:20yeah jackson
- 7:22yeah
- 7:23jackson yeah
- 7:24yeah
- 7:25yeah lots of pitch change there yeah
- 7:29yeah
- 7:30up down shape
- 7:32yeah
- 7:33yeah
- 7:34yeah i remember
- 7:35i
- 7:36she really draws that out longer than
- 7:38you normally would as she's thinking i
- 7:41remem
- 7:43and then we almost don't even hear burr
- 7:45because he's interrupted her and she
- 7:47kind of just drops that syllable i
- 7:49remember
- 7:51jackson
- 7:52jackson
- 7:54if she does say this syllable it's very
- 7:56very quiet
- 7:58i don't really hear it
- 8:00jackson
- 8:03jackson but we do have that up down
- 8:05shape of stress with the a vowel
- 8:08on the stress syllable there i
- 8:11remember
- 8:13i remember i remember
- 8:15i remember
- 8:17jackson
- 8:19jack sent me to pick you up and take you
- 8:20to the gig
- 8:22now let's listen to his phrase
- 8:24and see what we think these peaks of
- 8:26stress are uh what has that shape
- 8:30what feels like the most stressed
- 8:32syllables here
- 8:33jack sent me to pick you up
- 8:35jack sent me to pick you up
- 8:36jack sent me to pick you up
- 8:38jack sent me
- 8:40a little bit of shape on that one
- 8:42jack sent me jack sent
- 8:46me to
- 8:48pick you
- 8:50up
- 8:51i would say out of those three stress
- 8:53levels up has that most up down shape is
- 8:55the most stressed
- 8:57jack sent me to pick you up
- 8:59jack sent me to pick you up
- 9:01jack sent me to pick you up and take you
- 9:02to the gig
- 9:03and
- 9:04take a little bit of stress there to the
- 9:07gig
- 9:08and more stress there
- 9:10and take you to the gig
- 9:11and take you to the gig
- 9:13and take you to the gig
- 9:14a gig is a performance
- 9:16hey can you come out tonight no sorry
- 9:18i've got a gig i'm playing at a bar down
- 9:20the street we're doing a jazz set for
- 9:23example you may have heard the phrase
- 9:25gig economy in the news
- 9:27talking about economics this has to do
- 9:29with a shift from being an employee to
- 9:33being a contractor and working on a gig
- 9:35by gig basis
- 9:37for example
- 9:38someone who drives a car for lyft or
- 9:40uber
- 9:41that would be considered somebody in the
- 9:42gig economy they're not employees there
- 9:45they choose what rides they want to pick
- 9:47up when
- 9:48gigs are used a lot with musicians as
- 9:50well i've even heard it used as a verb
- 9:53are you gigging tonight
- 9:55and take it to the gig
- 9:56and take you to the gig
- 9:58and take you to the gig
- 9:59so those are our most stressed words
- 10:01here let's go ahead and look at the
- 10:02reductions because we do have some
- 10:04reductions
- 10:06jack sent me to pick you up
- 10:07jack sent me to pick you up jack sent me
- 10:09to pick you up jack sent me to pick you
- 10:11up
- 10:12jack sent me i'm gonna call that a stop
- 10:15t
- 10:16sometimes in n t
- 10:19we drop the t
- 10:21jack send me jack send me but i hear it
- 10:24more as jack sent me sent
- 10:26me jack sent
- 10:28me i'm ex i'm exaggerating the stop
- 10:30there but i definitely hear that as a
- 10:32stop t jack sent me to
- 10:34the word two reduces
- 10:37it's got more of a flap t sound and a
- 10:40schwa sent me the ra
- 10:42ra ra
- 10:43jack sent me a jack sent me there
- 10:46jackson
- 10:47jackson
- 10:49jack sent me to pick you up pick you up
- 10:51pick you up stressed unstressed stressed
- 10:55and the word you
- 10:56isn't pronounced you he changes that
- 10:58vowel to the schwa pick yeah
- 11:03and the schwa just links very smoothly
- 11:05into the uh as in butter vowel for up
- 11:08pick yeah
- 11:11pick you up
- 11:12pick you up jack sent me to pick you up
- 11:15sent me to pick you up
- 11:16his lips come together for the pee you
- 11:18can look at that
- 11:23but he doesn't release them pick you up
- 11:25pick you up
- 11:26pick you up pick you up pick you up and
- 11:28take you to the gig
- 11:30they come together but then rather than
- 11:31releasing the air he goes right into the
- 11:33next word which is and and he does
- 11:36reduce that
- 11:38i would write that schwa and
- 11:40[Music]
- 11:41n absorbs the schwa so it's not un
- 11:44it's just um
- 11:47you can take it
- 11:48and take it
- 11:49and take it
- 11:50and take you to the
- 11:53u and two
- 11:55they both reduce don't they these three
- 11:57words are unstressed
- 12:02they're flattering pitch they're a
- 12:03little bit less clear
- 12:05so you becomes yeah
- 12:08yeah i don't have to move my jaw at all
- 12:10for that i don't have to move my lips at
- 12:12all for that yeah yeah yeah my tongue is
- 12:15the only thing that moves
- 12:20and even as i go into the word two
- 12:22reduced i don't have to move anything
- 12:23but my tongue
- 12:25and take it
- 12:26and take it
- 12:27and take it
- 12:32i can do all of that
- 12:34linking smoothly into the unstressed
- 12:36word the i can do all of that without
- 12:39moving my
- 12:40jaw or lips
- 12:44it's all just the tongue so you want to
- 12:47be simplifying your mouth movements as
- 12:48much as possible so that you can make
- 12:51this string of unstressed words with the
- 12:53reductions
- 12:55as simply as possible as quick as
- 12:57possible
- 12:58because that's an important part of the
- 12:59contrast of american english
- 13:02you do the gig
- 13:03you do the gig
- 13:04you do the gig gig is the word that has
- 13:07the energy
- 13:08you get the gig
- 13:09you give the gig
- 13:11get the gig
- 13:12the t intake is a true t
- 13:16and it's a true t because it starts a
- 13:18stressed word if a t starts a stressed
- 13:21syllable and it's not part of a tr
- 13:23cluster it will be a true t if it's part
- 13:25of a tr cluster it might end up sounding
- 13:27like ch but here it's not
- 13:30so it's just t take take take a light
- 13:34true tea
- 13:35take you to the gig
- 13:37take you to the gig
- 13:38and take you to the gig
- 13:40now
- 13:40i hope you guys are noticing really how
- 13:43smoothly everything links together and
- 13:46we have reductions that help us do that
- 13:48we have this continuous sound sometimes
- 13:51it's scooping up sometimes it's falling
- 13:53down that's the melody
- 13:55but it never feels separate within one
- 13:58thought group it always feels connected
- 14:00so if you're used to speaking with words
- 14:02more separate
- 14:04this could be a challenge for you
- 14:06also most people have a hard time
- 14:08simplifying and making these unstressed
- 14:11words as quickly as they can let's just
- 14:13take the word and for example
- 14:15you know it's not and
- 14:17you know it's um
- 14:19but a lot of students will to go
- 14:22but actually it's
- 14:25it's even faster
- 14:27as fast as you can possibly make it and
- 14:30take and take and take
- 14:32and take you to the gig
- 14:34and take you to the gig
- 14:36and take you to the gig
- 14:37and take you to the gig
- 14:39oh my god oh my god
- 14:41oh really clear up down shape
- 14:44oh
- 14:45my god
- 14:46god is what stress the word my just
- 14:49falls in on the way up my god oh my god
- 14:54oh my god oh my god oh my god um
- 14:58um
- 14:59um
- 15:00that's the thinking vowel that uh as in
- 15:03butter sound we usually do it just as uh
- 15:07or um with an m at the end
- 15:10um
- 15:13um but
- 15:14but
- 15:15but
- 15:16but do you notice that stop t she
- 15:18doesn't say but
- 15:20she says but
- 15:22but
- 15:22abruptly stopping the air she probably
- 15:25puts her tongue into position for the
- 15:26tea but
- 15:28and stops the air but doesn't release
- 15:31but
- 15:32but
- 15:33but i gotta i gotta
- 15:36i got it not very clear right
- 15:39so grammatically this is a combination
- 15:42of these words
- 15:44i have got to we combine got two into
- 15:48gotta and we drop have this is a common
- 15:51way to talk
- 15:52you would never want to write this but
- 15:54to say this is okay
- 15:56i gotta i got it i got it
- 15:59i gotta
- 16:00i gotta
- 16:01i gotta i gotta i gotta the t's are flap
- 16:05tees
- 16:06the tongue just flaps up against the
- 16:08roof of the mouth it's certainly not got
- 16:09to gotta
- 16:12gotta i would say this is the ah as in
- 16:15law vowel and then the ending unstressed
- 16:17is the schwa i gotta i gotta and the i
- 16:20diphthong for eye links really smoothly
- 16:22into that
- 16:24i gotta i got no break
- 16:26so the stress would be on the stress
- 16:28syllable of god
- 16:30gotta i gotta i gotta
- 16:32i gotta
- 16:34i gotta
- 16:35i gotta i gotta work i gotta work she
- 16:37repeats herself it sounds exactly the
- 16:39same
- 16:40i gotta
- 16:42again flap t
- 16:44i gotta work and then the voice goes
- 16:48back up for the stress word work
- 16:50i gotta work
- 16:52i gotta work
- 16:53i gotta work and the k of work releases
- 16:56right into the i diphthong work i work
- 16:59eye and that's an unstressed word so
- 17:01it's flatter down here work guy work i
- 17:06work i
- 17:07work i
- 17:08work i can't go
- 17:10she makes a little k sound here but then
- 17:12repeats herself
- 17:14work i can't go
- 17:15work i can't go work i can't go
- 17:19let's listen to just this phrase on
- 17:22repeat tell me
- 17:25about the middle word can't tell me
- 17:27about that t after you listen to it
- 17:29i can't go
- 17:31i can't go
- 17:32i can't go
- 17:33wow i don't really hear it at all i
- 17:35don't really hear a stop i can't go i
- 17:39barely even hear the n so the t i would
- 17:41say is dropped the n pretty unclear
- 17:45uh
- 17:46stress is on can't
- 17:49but even though it's stress it's not
- 17:50fully pronounced so the word can't has
- 17:53the k consonant
- 17:55as in vowel when that's followed by n
- 17:59we go through a sound before the n
- 18:02like the schwa or the uh as in butter
- 18:04however you want to think of it it's the
- 18:06back of the tongue relaxing
- 18:11before the tongue lifts in the front for
- 18:12the end
- 18:14can
- 18:15[Music]
- 18:18can yeah i definitely hear that
- 18:20transition those two sounds the n is
- 18:23very weak though the t is dropped i
- 18:25can't go i can't go i can't go
- 18:28i can't go
- 18:30i can't go
- 18:31i can't go
- 18:32[Music]
- 18:34and then the word go falls in on the way
- 18:36down of the pitch it's got less energy
- 18:40i can't go
- 18:41i can't go
- 18:42i can't go he's really looking forward
- 18:44to this
- 18:45okay let's look at his phrase what are
- 18:47the most stressed syllables here
- 18:49he's really looking forward to this
- 18:51he's really looking forward to this
- 18:53he's really looking forward to this he's
- 18:55really i would say they're
- 18:58looking forward to this and the rest is
- 19:01a little bit less clear a little bit
- 19:03more unstressed
- 19:05he's really looking forward to this
- 19:07he's really looking forward to this
- 19:09he's really looking forward to this
- 19:11so the word he's just builds up to it
- 19:14the second unstressable of really just
- 19:16falls and on the way down he's really
- 19:20looking
- 19:21forward to
- 19:26that's the melody you want in your voice
- 19:28and you want all of that connection
- 19:30he's really looking forward to this
- 19:32he's really looking forward to this
- 19:34he's really looking forward to this
- 19:36when you have the audio at the end of
- 19:38this video you have the chance to train
- 19:40there will be slow motion so you'll have
- 19:43different opportunities to work with the
- 19:45audio in a different way
- 19:47and if it's at all difficult for you to
- 19:50connect everything you'll really want to
- 19:52do the slow motion that's going to help
- 19:54you
- 19:55focus on the linking he's really looking
- 19:59forward to this
- 20:01are you noticing how i'm pronouncing too
- 20:03let's go listen to him do it part of
- 20:06this
- 20:06i've heard of this
- 20:08i've heard of this we've ordered this
- 20:10we've ordered this order this
- 20:12it's really pretty unclear isn't it
- 20:16i've heard of this
- 20:18we have a word that ends in a d
- 20:20often when that's followed by the word
- 20:22two we just drop the t all together and
- 20:24we just link a schwa on to the end
- 20:27forward
- 20:28this and that's what he's doing for this
- 20:31lord of this for this th super unclear
- 20:35for this this this this this this
- 20:38for this
- 20:44so if you listen to just these last
- 20:46three words it all sounds pretty unclear
- 20:48but in the
- 20:50context of the whole phrase i wouldn't
- 20:52notice that as being unclear it's only
- 20:54when i isolate it
- 20:55so when you take these unclear words or
- 20:57syllables and you put them in the
- 20:58context of everything they don't sound
- 21:01unclear anymore they just sound like
- 21:02part of the natural rhythm of the
- 21:04sentence
- 21:06i've heard of this
- 21:07i've heard of this i appreciate that
- 21:09what's our most stressed syllable in
- 21:11this phrase
- 21:13i appreciate that
- 21:14i appreciate that
- 21:16i appreciate that
- 21:17i uh pre
- 21:20i
- 21:22appreciate that
- 21:24definitely pre you can even see her eyes
- 21:26open a little bit more wide on that
- 21:29syllable
- 21:30i appreciate that
- 21:31i appreciate that
- 21:33i appreciate that and these words all
- 21:35link together really smoothly i
- 21:39the i diphthong when that word is
- 21:42linking into a word that begins with a
- 21:43vowel or diphthong you can feel like it
- 21:45begins with a y that glide consonant
- 21:48might help you connect the two words
- 21:49more smoothly i
- 21:52appreciate
- 21:53[Music]
- 21:56appreciate four syllable word with
- 21:58second syllable stress this c is the sh
- 22:02sound
- 22:03sh
- 22:04appreciate appreciate that and we have a
- 22:07stop t because the next word begins with
- 22:10a consonant appreciate that
- 22:12and she does a stop t here as well at
- 22:15the end of the thought group
- 22:16also the next word begins with a
- 22:18consonant appreciate that
- 22:21i appreciate that
- 22:22i appreciate that
- 22:24i appreciate that but um but
- 22:27but another stop t but
- 22:30um
- 22:32but um
- 22:34but uh appreciate that but um
- 22:36i can't leave i can't leave i can't
- 22:39leave all of these words have a little
- 22:41bit of a stress feel to them i can't
- 22:43leave
- 22:44i can't leave
- 22:45i can't leave i can't leave so he's been
- 22:48told by his employer
- 22:50not to leave without her so he's not
- 22:53taking no for an answer he says okay
- 22:55we'll all wait i can't leave i can't
- 22:57leave
- 22:58let's look at our n apostrophe t
- 23:00contraction here how do you feel that
- 23:02it's pronounced
- 23:04i can't leave
- 23:05i can't leave i can't leave very very
- 23:08subtlety i'm not really sure if i feel
- 23:10it as a stop or as totally dropped i can
- 23:13leave i can leave i can leave
- 23:16i can't leave
- 23:17i can't leave
- 23:18i can't leave it almost sounds dropped
- 23:21so what's the difference between can and
- 23:23can't if you're dropping the t
- 23:26the difference is in the pronunciation
- 23:28of the vowel
- 23:29if it was the word can
- 23:31the vowel would be reduced to the schwa
- 23:34and it would be because that's what we
- 23:37do with can when it's not the only verb
- 23:39in the sentence i can leave i can leave
- 23:43now can has the feel of
- 23:46but when the vowel feels more fully
- 23:47pronounced i can leave i can and and and
- 23:52and then we know it's can't so it's
- 23:54tricky because we feel like the t is the
- 23:56difference between these two words but
- 23:58actually in pronunciation we don't
- 24:00really hear a full t almost never would
- 24:02that be pronounced with a true tea
- 24:04maybe a stop t may be a dropped t almost
- 24:07never a true t so the difference between
- 24:09can and can't is more in the vowel than
- 24:12in the t believe it or not
- 24:15i can leave that's this word can i can
- 24:18leave
- 24:19i can't leave
- 24:21i can't leave i can't leave that's this
- 24:23word more of the up down shape of stress
- 24:26i can't leave
- 24:28i can't leave
- 24:29i can't leave so i'll be in my car right
- 24:30down the street so i'll be in my little
- 24:34bit of stress there i'll be in my car
- 24:38right down the street
- 24:42stop t
- 24:44so i'll be in my car right down the
- 24:45street
- 24:46so i'll be in my car right down the
- 24:47street so i'll be in my car right down
- 24:49the street
- 24:50saw
- 24:51saul everything links together smoothly
- 24:54the word i
- 24:56is with the ism by diphthong
- 24:58the contraction i will is sometimes
- 25:01pronounced i'll with an l at the end but
- 25:04usually it sounds more like the word all
- 25:07instead of i'll all
- 25:09all all all be all be all be in my car
- 25:14i'll be in my car
- 25:15i'll be in my car
- 25:16i'll be in my car right down the street
- 25:18car right
- 25:20these two words link together single r
- 25:22sound you don't need to try to make it
- 25:24longer to show that there are two r's
- 25:26there it can just be one r linking them
- 25:28together car right car right stop t
- 25:32because the next order begins with the
- 25:33continent
- 25:35car right car right down the street
- 25:37car right down the street
- 25:39car right down the street
- 25:41car right down the street
- 25:42right down the street
- 25:44right down the street
- 25:46right down the street
- 25:47right down the street uh please tell him
- 25:50uh
- 25:51uh
- 25:52again that thinking vowel uh as in
- 25:54butter i feel like every language has
- 25:56their own sounds they make when they're
- 25:58thinking uh uh
- 26:00really open and relaxed that's the
- 26:02american vowel uh
- 26:06uh please tell him please tell him
- 26:09please
- 26:11tell him most of the stress on please
- 26:14she really wants to emphasize this
- 26:17please
- 26:19tell him and then the other two words
- 26:21come in as we go down we do have a true
- 26:23t intel
- 26:24because it starts
- 26:26a stressed word even though it's not as
- 26:28stressed as please
- 26:29please
- 26:31tell them do you notice what i'm doing
- 26:33with the h
- 26:34she drops the h doesn't she
- 26:36fairly common to drop the h in words
- 26:39like him her his
- 26:41please tell him
- 26:43tell him um um um so not m um um
- 26:48um i would probably write that with a
- 26:49shawa please tell him
- 26:52please tell him
- 26:53please tell him
- 26:55please tell him thank you thank you
- 26:57thank you
- 26:59going up in pitch because she's not done
- 27:00that is not the end she doesn't just
- 27:02want him to be told thank you thank you
- 27:05thank you
- 27:06thank you
- 27:08thank you but no thank you
- 27:09but
- 27:10no thank you
- 27:13no thank you and then this comes down to
- 27:15pitch thank you
- 27:17the upward intonation shows were not
- 27:19done thank you but no thank you
- 27:22that's like a polite way to decline
- 27:24something thanks but no thanks i'm okay
- 27:27thank you
- 27:28but no thank you
- 27:29thank you but no thank you
- 27:31thank you but no thank you
- 27:33thank you but no thank you
- 27:35thank you this is a tough word we've got
- 27:36the unvoiced th she doesn't make it
- 27:38super clear especially the first time
- 27:41thank you thank you thank you
- 27:44thank you
- 27:45the k linking right into the you
- 27:47diphthong thank you thank you
- 27:50what is the vowel there it's a as in bat
- 27:53followed by an ng sound the n in think
- 27:57isn't at the front of the mouth like an
- 27:59n but it's at the back of the mouth like
- 28:00an ng
- 28:02thank you
- 28:04thank you
- 28:05thank you
- 28:06thank you
- 28:08so when a is followed by n it's not
- 28:10really like an a it becomes more like an
- 28:13a diphthong like in the word say they
- 28:17they thank you thank you
- 28:20but no thank you
- 28:21but stop t because the next word begins
- 28:24with the consonant thank you
- 28:26but no thank you
- 28:27thank you but no thank you
- 28:29thank you but no thank you
- 28:31thank you but no thank you okay and then
- 28:33he says uh or maybe it's but i'm not
- 28:36sure
- 28:37it's very fast but
- 28:40uh
- 28:42uh okay okay okay okay
- 28:46then she says the word okay she drops
- 28:49the first syllable that's pretty common
- 28:50okay okay okay okay pitch goes up okay
- 28:54okay
- 28:55it's like saying okay will you do this
- 28:57for me okay okay
- 28:59okay
- 29:00okay
- 29:01okay say it just like that
- 29:03now this last sentence let's listen to
- 29:06it and really try to pay attention to
- 29:07the intonation what's the most stressed
- 29:09word here
- 29:10say it just like that
- 29:12say it just like that
- 29:14say it just like that
- 29:16say it just like that the words say so
- 29:19she starts by really stressing that and
- 29:21then the rest of the words kind of come
- 29:23down after that say it just
- 29:26like
- 29:28that
- 29:29stop t
- 29:31say it just like that
- 29:33say it just like that
- 29:35say it just like that
- 29:36say it just like that
- 29:38okay we also have a stop t in it say it
- 29:41because the next word begins with the
- 29:43consonant
- 29:44the t in just totally dropped because
- 29:47the next word begins with an l it's part
- 29:49of a cluster
- 29:50say
- 29:52just like that
- 29:54can you do it that smoothly
- 29:57when you're working with the slow motion
- 29:59audio
- 30:00do repeat it back in slow motion
- 30:03feel that
- 30:04stickiness between the words say it just
- 30:09like that
- 30:11say it just like that
- 30:13say it just like that
- 30:15say it just like that
- 30:17let's listen to this whole conversation
- 30:19one more time
- 30:21hi ali hi i'm phil we met last night
- 30:23yeah jack sent me to pick you up and
- 30:25take you to the gig
- 30:26oh my god um but i gotta i gotta work i
- 30:30i can't go he's really looking forward
- 30:31to this i appreciate that but um i can't
- 30:34leave so i'll be in my car right down
- 30:36the street uh please tell him thank you
- 30:38but no thank you okay say it just like
- 30:39that
- 30:41now for the fun part you'll look at the
- 30:43notes we took together and you'll hear a
- 30:45part of the conversation on a loop three
- 30:47times then there's a space for you to
- 30:49repeat
- 30:50for example you'll hear this
- 30:53maybe so sorry maybe so sorry maybe so
- 30:55sorry
- 30:56then you'll repeat it maybe so sir
- 30:59try to imitate everything about this
- 31:01exactly so when you see this
- 31:06then you'll repeat it maybe so sir
- 31:09that's from top gun maverick which was
- 31:12the first movie we studied in this
- 31:13summer series you'll also have the
- 31:16opportunity to listen and repeat in slow
- 31:18motion this will be important for you if
- 31:20you're more of a beginner or if you're
- 31:22having a hard time focusing on linking
- 31:25or the melody
- 31:26maybe you'll want to do it both ways but
- 31:28the important thing is here is your
- 31:30opportunity to take what you learned and
- 31:33put it into your body and your own habit
- 31:36that's what's going to transform your
- 31:38speaking
- 31:39you might do well to work with the audio
- 31:41section of this video every day for a
- 31:43week imitating the rhythm and the
- 31:45simplifications will get easier each
- 31:48time you do it
- 31:49if you can't keep up with the native
- 31:51speaker do the slow motion imitation
- 31:53okay here's our audio training section
