- 0:00Welcome to this new automotive news
- 0:02video for Thursday, October 1, 2026.
- 0:05Today, we’re going to talk about
- 0:06electric cars, which have just set a
- 0:08new record in France; the price of
- 0:10electric vehicle batteries, which is
- 0:12finally starting to drop, potentially
- 0:14leading to cheaper EVs soon; and BMW,
- 0:16which just unveiled a new strategic
- 0:17plan that will phase out combustion
- 0:19engines, as well as its current bosses.
- 0:21I hope you find today’s topics
- 0:23interesting. If you do, I’m counting
- 0:25on you, as usual, to show it by leaving
- 0:27a like, subscribing for future videos,
- 0:29boosting this one here, and of course,
- 0:31leaving a short comment giving your
- 0:32opinion on today's news. But before
- 0:35today’s automotive news, I want to
- 0:36quickly tell you about the sponsor for
- 0:38this video, which is once again
- 0:39carVertical. With fuel prices
- 0:41constantly rising, buying an electric
- 0:43car to save money might seem like a
- 0:46great idea. Unless, of course, your
- 0:48future electric car is hiding a very
- 0:50nasty surprise. For example, here we
- 0:52have a Tesla Model Y, one of the most
- 0:54popular electric SUVs on the market.
- 0:56From the outside, it looks very, very
- 0:57clean. It even looks almost brand new.
- 0:59Except that in reality, its history
- 1:00reveals that it was flooded in 2022.
- 1:03That’s what I learned thanks to its
- 1:04carVertical report after simply
- 1:06entering its license plate on the site.
- 1:09Beyond the fact that nobody wants to
- 1:11drive a car that was previously flooded
- 1:12, due to the potential safety risk it
- 1:14poses, replacing a damaged battery or
- 1:16electronic components costs a fortune.
- 1:19So, if you’re looking to buy a used
- 1:21electric car, a hybrid, or any other
- 1:23type of used vehicle, remember to check
- 1:25its history on carVertical before you
- 1:27buy. Plus, you can save 20%on
- 1:28carVertical by using my code or simply
- 1:31by visiting the site via the link in
- 1:33the description and the top comment
- 1:35under this video, which automatically
- 1:37applies my discount code. And if
- 1:39carVertical finds no data on your car,
- 1:41your credits are refunded and remain
- 1:42valid for 6 months. Thanks to
- 1:44carVertical for the support, and
- 1:45let’s get started with today’s news
- 1:46. Indeed, we are going to start this
- 1:48video by talking about electric cars
- 1:50and the French automotive market, since
- 1:52the figures for September 2026 have
- 1:54just come in, and there are quite a few
- 1:56very interesting things to say about
- 1:58them. First off, and this is some
- 2:00pretty good news, the new car market in
- 2:03France has finally rebounded, with an
- 2:0511.6%increase in sales in France in
- 2:07September 2026 compared to September
- 2:092025, with about 156,000 new cars
- 2:10registered during this period, mostly
- 2:12thanks to a rather nice month of
- 2:14September. The overall 2026 figures are
- 2:19being pulled upward and are actually up
- 2:214.1%compared to the period from January
- 2:23to September 2025. Some good news,
- 2:27though we shouldn't forget that the
- 2:302026 French automotive market is still
- 2:3225 to 30%lower than the French market
- 2:34before Covid. But hey, let's try to
- 2:37focus on the positive. 2026 will
- 2:39normally be a less bad year for France
- 2:42than 2025. Some good news also comes
- 2:44from the French brands. For example,
- 2:47Renault is up 22%compared to September
- 2:492025, with its top 3 sales represented
- 2:51by models like the Clio, the Renault 5,
- 2:53and the new Twingo. And there is even a
- 2:56recorded increase for the Stellantis
- 2:58group, which is up 6%. Although, if we
- 3:00look closer at these different brands,
- 3:02it's very contrasted. This increase in
- 3:04sales is mainly due to the Citroën and
- 3:06Fiat brands, which have pulled the
- 3:08group up, while the rest of the group's
- 3:10brands only represent very small
- 3:11volumes or are in freefall, sometimes
- 3:13down as much as 20%for Opel, which is
- 3:15still a fairly mainstream brand. So, we
- 3:18have a few French brands pulling the
- 3:20market up, but we also have Chinese
- 3:22brands performing spectacularly this
- 3:24September. BYD is up 282%. And that is
- 3:30not even the most impressive part
- 3:32regarding Chinese brands, as the Chery
- 3:34group, which owns brands like Jaecoo or
- 3:36Omoda that weren't even present on the
- 3:38French market in 2025, still managed
- 3:403,400 registrations in this period.
- 3:42That's almost as much as BYD. As a
- 3:44result, Chinese brands combined in
- 3:46France represent about 7 to 8%of the
- 3:48market share during this period.
- 3:51Meanwhile, on the flip side, we see
- 3:52several major historic automotive
- 3:54groups in sharp decline. For example,
- 3:56Volkswagen is down 12%. BMW, which we
- 3:58will talk about later in this video, is
- 4:00down 6%, and Mercedes is down almost 5%
- 4:03. So, how can we explain such a large
- 4:05difference in momentum between the
- 4:06various automotive groups? It is
- 4:08largely due to the electric car. And
- 4:11here, it is true that the September
- 4:13figures are quite impressive since, in
- 4:15September in France, registrations of
- 4:17100%electric cars simply doubled
- 4:19compared to the September 2025 period.
- 4:2242%market share. In other words, more
- 4:25than four out of ten registered cars
- 4:27were 100%electric. A market that is
- 4:29extremely concentrated, since half of
- 4:31its sales are made by just three brands
- 4:33. Renault, which accounts for 15,000
- 4:35electric registrations on its own
- 4:37during this period. Tesla with 9,000,
- 4:39then Peugeot with 7,000. We will talk
- 4:41about this later in this video, but for
- 4:43the mainstream brands, it is mainly due
- 4:45to social leasing. Whereas for Tesla,
- 4:47it is mainly due to the fact that in
- 4:492026, if you have a bit of a budget and
- 4:51you want the best range-to-price,
- 4:53charging time, and performance ratio
- 4:55for an electric car, well, Tesla is
- 4:57simply the best. Moreover, Tesla had a
- 4:59rather spectacular month with a 62%
- 5:01increase compared, once again, to
- 5:03September 2025, with the Tesla Model Y
- 5:06simply becoming the best-selling car in
- 5:08France in September. And I am not
- 5:10talking about the electric car rankings
- 5:12here, I am talking about the rankings
- 5:13across all powertrains combined. The
- 5:14Model Y is the best-selling vehicle. A
- 5:16victory for the electric car, certainly
- 5:18, but a victory in half-measure
- 5:19nonetheless. That is what the director
- 5:21of the PFA says. The PFA is the French
- 5:24Automotive Platform. It is the
- 5:25association of French car manufacturers
- 5:27. The fact is that this explosion of
- 5:29the electric car in France is due to
- 5:31fuel prices that are skyrocketing and
- 5:33are unlikely to go down quickly. But it
- 5:35is also largely due to subsidies for
- 5:37switching to electric cars, such as
- 5:39social leasing, the electric car
- 5:41purchase bonus, or the eco-score. This
- 5:43is what the PFA is explaining a bit:
- 5:45they still do not see, in French
- 5:47dealerships, whether from private or
- 5:49corporate clients, any real enthusiasm
- 5:51for buying an electric car. It is a
- 5:53choice made rather because of current
- 5:55French taxation, whether it be support
- 5:57for buying electric cars or penalties
- 5:58on combustion-engine cars. And a choice
- 6:01also made because of the current
- 6:02economic context. In other words, the
- 6:04French are not switching to electric
- 6:06because they want to buy electric, but
- 6:07simply because driving 100%combustion
- 6:09is becoming more and more expensive.
- 6:11That is how we can explain why Renault
- 6:12and Peugeot are rising so much while
- 6:14Mercedes and others are falling so much
- 6:16. It is that Renault and Peugeot offer
- 6:18several small entry-level electric cars
- 6:20in their catalog that, while they may
- 6:22not have great range, are eligible for
- 6:23most subsidies. Meanwhile, the major
- 6:25German groups are being penalized by
- 6:27taxes on combustion engine cars, while
- 6:29simultaneously being hampered by their
- 6:30electric lineups, which focus only on
- 6:32rather high-end models; these have
- 6:33great range, certainly, but due to
- 6:35their price, they are ineligible for a
- 6:37large portion of French subsidies. And
- 6:38that is the big question the PFA is
- 6:40asking itself. Will the breakthrough of
- 6:42all-electric vehicles continue once
- 6:44subsidies have decreased and when
- 6:46potential taxes on electric cars start
- 6:48to be introduced? The good news is that
- 6:50perhaps the price of new electric cars
- 6:52will finally drop, since the
- 6:53manufacturing costs of their batteries
- 6:55are finally starting to fall
- 6:57significantly. To understand what is
- 6:59happening, we must remember that about
- 7:0190 to 95%of the electric cars we buy in
- 7:03Europe and France are equipped with
- 7:05batteries that come from Chinese
- 7:06manufacturers. And, in fact, in China,
- 7:09the great battery giants like CATL, BYD
- 7:11, or Geely have produced so many
- 7:13batteries that supply is starting to
- 7:16far exceed demand. Basically, there are
- 7:18far too many batteries that have been
- 7:19produced compared to what is being sold
- 7:20. As a result, stocks are accumulating,
- 7:23prices are falling, and the Chinese
- 7:25government has even asked manufacturers
- 7:26to curb their new projects to avoid
- 7:28even greater overproduction. On top of
- 7:30that, in parallel, lithium—one of the
- 7:33most important materials for making
- 7:35batteries—is seeing its price drop,
- 7:37falling about 25%in one month. This is
- 7:40also due to the fact that lithium
- 7:41extraction and processing plants have
- 7:43simply overproduced in recent months.
- 7:45So, in theory, with cheaper lithium,
- 7:47factories producing enormous quantities
- 7:49, and batteries that are less and less
- 7:51expensive to manufacture, electric cars
- 7:53should also become much cheaper. There
- 7:55is a fairly interesting figure on this
- 7:57subject that comes from Bloomberg,
- 7:59which explains that between 2010 and
- 8:012026, the average price of a battery
- 8:03has been divided by about 15, going
- 8:05from approximately € 1,400 in 2010
- 8:07for 1 kWh of electric car battery to
- 8:09about € 100 in 2026. The big question
- 8:12now is whether this drop in electric
- 8:13car production costs will end up being
- 8:15passed on to the price of new cars at
- 8:17dealerships. In short, will the price
- 8:20of electric cars go down because the
- 8:22batteries are cheaper to make, or will
- 8:24car brands take advantage of this drop
- 8:26in costs to increase their margins and
- 8:28make more money on every car sold,
- 8:30without the customer seeing a single
- 8:32euro less on the invoice? Speaking of
- 8:35margins, let’s talk about BMW’s new
- 8:37plan, which explains how the brand
- 8:39intends to recover over the coming
- 8:40years. BMW has just announced a fairly
- 8:43massive restructuring plan. The
- 8:46manufacturer wants to reduce its
- 8:48divisions and management positions by
- 8:5020%by mid-2027, for example. So, these
- 8:53are senior executive and senior vice
- 8:55president roles that will be cut. We
- 8:57are talking about around 100 management
- 8:59positions that will disappear to be
- 9:02replaced by AI, as BMW indeed wants to
- 9:04develop artificial intelligence to
- 9:06simplify and accelerate part of its
- 9:09organization. That is only part of the
- 9:11plan, as BMW also plans to cut about
- 9:148,000 jobs in Germany. These will
- 9:16mostly be positions in the car
- 9:17manufacturing plants. So, fewer
- 9:19employees, but also fewer cars, since
- 9:20the manufacturer is going to simplify
- 9:22its lineup. The brand will, for example
- 9:24, discontinue certain models like the 2
- 9:26Series Active Tourer, but also the
- 9:27diesel versions of the 3 Series. We
- 9:29were talking about it yesterday; the
- 9:30new G50 3 Series will drop diesel.
- 9:32Instead, BMW will prepare a new
- 9:34entry-level electric car for Europe
- 9:36starting in 2028. Everything indicates
- 9:38that it could simply be the new 1
- 9:40Series, which would be based on the
- 9:42technologies of the new Neue Klasse
- 9:43platform. So, perhaps with large
- 9:45batteries, long range, and a price a
- 9:48bit lower than the current i3, which
- 9:50starts at around € 57,000 to €
- 9:5258,000. The brand has still confirmed
- 9:54that the future 1 Series will continue
- 9:56to feature internal combustion and
- 9:57hybrid engine versions in its catalog.
- 9:59That won't necessarily be the case for
- 10:00all models, or at least not in all
- 10:02markets, since in France, for example,
- 10:04BMW has just decided to remove pure
- 10:06internal combustion gasoline and diesel
- 10:08engines from some of its models,
- 10:09notably the X3. This is mainly due to
- 10:11the French ecological penalty, which
- 10:12makes these versions increasingly
- 10:14difficult to sell in France. The X3
- 10:15will therefore only be offered here as
- 10:17a plug-in hybrid or in a 100%electric
- 10:19version, even if BMW indicates a
- 10:21solution could potentially be found on
- 10:23a case-by-case basis for a customer who
- 10:25absolutely wants to buy a combustion
- 10:27version. Basically, understand by this
- 10:29that if you show up at a BMW dealership
- 10:31, have the cash, and absolutely want to
- 10:33buy a version with the 6-cylinder
- 10:34gasoline engine without any
- 10:36hybridization, you can. It won't be a
- 10:38vehicle that is truly intended for the
- 10:40French market, but BMW dealerships will
- 10:41be able to import a vehicle into France
- 10:43that is, for example, sold on the
- 10:45German market. On one hand, pure
- 10:46combustion versions are disappearing in
- 10:48France. On the other hand, BMW is
- 10:50adding a new version to its new
- 10:52electric iX3, the 40 xDrive. It
- 10:54develops 374 horsepower, features
- 10:56all-wheel drive, claims up to 620 km of
- 10:58WLTP range, and most importantly, its
- 11:01price in France is € 68,000. Remember
- 11:03earlier when I told you that German
- 11:05brands for the French market were only
- 11:06betting on very expensive cars with
- 11:07large batteries? Well, here we have a
- 11:09very good example. So, to summarize, in
- 11:11the coming years at BMW, there will be
- 11:13job cuts, the disappearance of part of
- 11:15the management team in favor of
- 11:17artificial intelligence, and the
- 11:18discontinuation of certain combustion
- 11:20engines in markets where it is becoming
- 11:23fiscally indefensible. Stopping the
- 11:25models that sell the worst and the
- 11:27arrival by 2028 of a new entry-level
- 11:29electric model, the famous Neue Klasse
- 11:31Series 1. The goal of all this is to
- 11:34restore margins, because that is BMW's
- 11:36big problem; by investing heavily in
- 11:38electric vehicles without selling many,
- 11:40the brand is struggling to make ends
- 11:42meet financially. For example, the
- 11:45margins of its automotive business have
- 11:47fallen to 2.3%. Understand by that when
- 11:49you buy a BMW for € 100,000, the
- 11:51group actually only pockets € 2,300
- 11:53in profit. It's ridiculous. For premium
- 11:55brands, we should be looking at margins
- 11:58around 10 to 12%. And that, precisely,
- 12:00is the new objective of this
- 12:01restructuring campaign. BMW already
- 12:03wants to manage to get back to around 4
- 12:06%margin by 2028 and return to a 10%
- 12:08margin by the early 2030s, hence this
- 12:11major operating cost reduction campaign
- 12:13. That’s it, we’ve covered the news
- 12:15for today. I hope this video interested
- 12:16you. If so, I’m counting on you to
- 12:18show it by leaving a like, subscribing
- 12:20for future videos, and of course taking
- 12:21a quick look at the video's sponsor,
- 12:23CarVertical, and why not become a
- 12:24supporter of my channel via the "Join"
- 12:26button. I’ll see you tomorrow for the
- 12:28next video. Ciao!
