  1. 0:13Hi everyone. Hi everyone. Happy Monday
  2. 0:16morning. This morning I received an
  3. 0:23email, I read an email from a follower
  4. 0:25who pointed out various blogs, eh,
  5. 0:27Italian and also American, on the major
  6. 0:36trend of spirituality that I’ve
  7. 0:38already spoken about in other videos. A
  8. 0:43quick preamble: I consider myself a
  9. 0:45spiritual person. I have never embraced
  10. 0:51a, let’s call it, metaphysical
  11. 0:53spirituality, but mine is a
  12. 0:55spirituality based on values, on
  13. 0:56connection with other people, on
  14. 0:58elements we could simply define as
  15. 1:00concrete. And the, eh, the podcasts and
  16. 1:11YouTube channels that this follower
  17. 1:13sent me are, however, of a completely
  18. 1:14different nature. Um, a nature, in my
  19. 1:23opinion, confusing, even dangerous,
  20. 1:25regarding this drift that the word
  21. 1:27spirituality is having in the hands of
  22. 1:34charlatans, effectively, who are using
  23. 1:40suggestive elements to, in fact,
  24. 1:45practice medicine and psychology
  25. 1:47without a license. But let me explain
  26. 1:52better, get ready because this morning
  27. 1:54I got quite angry since they sent me
  28. 1:56the exact clips from various podcasts.
  29. 2:04Well, the American ones are disturbing,
  30. 2:06and moreover, they belong to a
  31. 2:07disturbing right wing, but actually,
  32. 2:09the Italian ones are also quite
  33. 2:18dramatic in how they are laid out.
  34. 2:23Spirituality has by now become a
  35. 2:24business. Eh, I’ve already talked
  36. 2:29about it in another video, but I want
  37. 2:31to talk about it because there are
  38. 2:33major dangers for the people who are
  39. 2:34drawn into this subject, which more or
  40. 2:42less always follows the same narrative
  41. 2:44stages in all these Italian podcasts.
  42. 2:47They have reported at least eight to me
  43. 2:54, I think, some of which I knew, others
  44. 2:56were, are new. Um, but the narrative
  45. 3:02arc of these podcasts is more or less
  46. 3:04always the same. They start from a
  47. 3:09generic existential suffering. Um, they
  48. 3:13start from the evils of the world, eh,
  49. 3:16very generalized, very mannered, right?
  50. 3:20Eh, they almost never go into the
  51. 3:21substance of things. They talk about
  52. 3:27negative energies, about, about
  53. 3:29vocations, inspirations, beautiful
  54. 3:31words, however, bent toward making a
  55. 3:33suffering emerge in the listener, in
  56. 3:35the user of these podcasts. Then,
  57. 3:45inevitably, keywords are brought up
  58. 3:47like depression, anxiety, end of life,
  59. 3:50loneliness, loneliness, loneliness,
  60. 3:52depression, anxiety, loneliness, death.
  61. 4:01And clearly, they trigger mechanisms of
  62. 4:03suffering to which they then provide
  63. 4:09answers that, in effect, are medicines,
  64. 4:11are therapies. All these gurus,
  65. 4:19podcasters, will deny until the end of
  66. 4:21their days that they are providing
  67. 4:22therapeutic or medical interventions.
  68. 4:29Eh, they will deny it until the end,
  69. 4:31but they are doing it. They are doing
  70. 4:34it. They are cunningly drawn to
  71. 4:41psychological disciplines, to medicine,
  72. 4:43to neuroscience. Obviously, obviously,
  73. 4:51they show confidence in handling terms
  74. 4:53they don't know a damn thing about.
  75. 5:01Obviously you hear talk of dopamine,
  76. 5:03hormones, amygdala, things obviously
  77. 5:05combined, then linked to words like
  78. 5:08subtle energies, soul, the afterlife,
  79. 5:10UFOs, aliens, Atlantis, the whole
  80. 5:12heritage of that was cited in
  81. 5:14such a brilliant and admirable way in
  82. 5:16films like Ghostbusters, right? She
  83. 5:24believes in Atlantis, reincarnation,
  84. 5:27the transmigration of the soul, etc.,
  85. 5:29okay? That was the condition to become
  86. 5:32a Ghostbuster, right? Well, all these
  87. 5:37keywords are brought back, put back
  88. 5:39into play, right? And often combined
  89. 5:43with another word, with other more
  90. 5:45modern, more interesting words, right?
  91. 5:48Like meditation, psychedelics. Uh, so
  92. 5:55you have this mix, uh, self-fulfillment
  93. 5:58, personal growth, entrepreneurship, uh
  94. 6:00, and this whole crazy mess that is
  95. 6:02proposed as a solution to suffering.
  96. 6:13For heaven's sake, there wouldn't be,
  97. 6:15uh, there wouldn't be major problems
  98. 6:17with saying, until you get to,
  99. 6:19obviously, because you always end up
  100. 6:22there talking about depression, anxiety
  101. 6:24, depression, anxiety, mental health
  102. 6:26problems, etc., etc., etc. So, in fact,
  103. 6:28they claim not to have, uh, to have
  104. 6:31nothing to do with psychology and
  105. 6:33medicine, but they do. And even those
  106. 6:41who, in theory, every now and then come
  107. 6:43on and have the credentials to talk
  108. 6:45about psychology, about medicine, then
  109. 6:47obviously are almost naturally drawn
  110. 6:49into a vortex of atomic that
  111. 6:57dazes the listener and distances them
  112. 6:59from what are the correct approaches to
  113. 7:01issues of suffering and mental health,
  114. 7:02because that is the point. When we talk
  115. 7:08about spirituality now, we are talking
  116. 7:10about mental health. This is an
  117. 7:13equivalence that is now clear, taken
  118. 7:15for granted, implicit, but not even
  119. 7:17that much. Uh, esoteric, but not even
  120. 7:20that much, I'd say rather esoteric. Um,
  121. 7:25and this is a big problem because in
  122. 7:28all these contexts, one, uh, people are
  123. 7:36led away from what are the real
  124. 7:37approaches to mental and physical
  125. 7:39suffering, including the more
  126. 7:44sociological ones, okay? Because it's
  127. 7:47obvious that our mental health also
  128. 7:49depends on the environment, on our
  129. 7:50relationship with others. But the
  130. 7:57solutions I see presented in these
  131. 7:59podcasts, uh, the narrative structures
  132. 8:01are at the very least, um, aimed at
  133. 8:03suggestion, uh, at manipulating the
  134. 8:05listener. Uh, metaphors, allegories,
  135. 8:12moreover stuff as old as the hills that
  136. 8:14we've seen since the 60s remixed again
  137. 8:16and again and again. But why? Because
  138. 8:20it works, right? It's a little bit like
  139. 8:22what the Catholic Church does, right?
  140. 8:24It remixes the usual things based on
  141. 8:26the two great fears, right? That is, on
  142. 8:29the two great pain points in marketing,
  143. 8:31I'm tempted to say fear, ignorance, and
  144. 8:33suffering. Fear of death, physical
  145. 8:38suffering, existential suffering, all
  146. 8:40remixed, so we now find ourselves
  147. 8:42considering spirituality as something
  148. 8:44that must necessarily be linked to
  149. 8:46metaphysical spirituality. I repeat,
  150. 8:52metaphysical spirituality, because
  151. 8:54that's always where it leads, okay? Of
  152. 8:58course, you hear interesting talk about
  153. 9:00values, about ethics, and ethics and
  154. 9:02values are always placed in a context,
  155. 9:05in a metaphysical framework. So, we
  156. 9:10talk about UFOs, just like we talk
  157. 9:13about ethics, we talk about the soul,
  158. 9:15about ghosts. About ghosts. We're
  159. 9:19talking about ghosts again, you know
  160. 9:21this stuff? And about meditation.
  161. 9:25Obviously, don't come bugging me with
  162. 9:27the whole meditation thing. I'm a great
  163. 9:31meditator, but I focus on mindfulness
  164. 9:34meditation, you know? And there's
  165. 9:39nothing to say if you want to consider
  166. 9:41another approach to meditation, for
  167. 9:43heaven's sake, you can do whatever you
  168. 9:45want, but don't pass off other types of
  169. 9:47meditation as a magic solution for
  170. 9:48certain things. I myself tell you that
  171. 9:53meditation is almost never a magic
  172. 9:55solution for anything. It is a useful
  173. 9:59adjuvant for building a foundation of a
  174. 10:01different kind. Meditation is not
  175. 10:05therapy. Meditation is not therapy.
  176. 10:09Meditation is something else. If you
  177. 10:11watch my videos you understand, but it
  178. 10:13is not therapy. Very often, when
  179. 10:15talking about meditation in these
  180. 10:17podcasts, it is obviously implied that
  181. 10:19it is a therapy. And those who talk
  182. 10:22about meditation, once again,
  183. 10:24depression, anxiety, loneliness, etc.,
  184. 10:26negative energies, soul, anxiety,
  185. 10:29depression, in short, they create some
  186. 10:31crazy mixtures. We are in a period of
  187. 10:43bombardment with totally wrong
  188. 10:45information, and all this causes
  189. 10:47serious damage to the population which,
  190. 10:49when having mental health problems,
  191. 10:51often...and unfortunately the fault is
  192. 10:53obviously also ours as doctors, since
  193. 10:55we have much less communicative power
  194. 10:57than these people, because let me also
  195. 10:59say that it's not just our lack of
  196. 11:01communication skills: it's that it's
  197. 11:03very easy to communicate in a
  198. 11:04suggestive and manipulative way when
  199. 11:06you bring in, when you hook
  200. 11:08into suggestive aspects, the soul,
  201. 11:10cosmic energies, Atlantis, the Mayans,
  202. 11:12UFOs and subtle energies, etcetera,
  203. 11:14etcetera. Okay? If I started talking
  204. 11:26on this channel, I'd have
  205. 11:27three times the followers I have, okay?
  206. 11:32I'd have three times as many if I
  207. 11:34occasionally invited, I don't know, a
  208. 11:36guru to talk about mental health,
  209. 11:38someone with a long beard or someone
  210. 11:40who, without any qualifications, talks
  211. 11:41to you about neuroscience associated
  212. 11:43with meditation, galactic,
  213. 11:45there are people who know nothing.
  214. 11:49People who know nothing; you look at
  215. 11:51their educational background, they know
  216. 11:53nothing, they've never seen a patient,
  217. 11:55a person, jack, you know? So,
  218. 11:57frankly, I am very, very concerned
  219. 11:59about all this, because then what
  220. 12:01happens? That people stay far, far away
  221. 12:05from real solutions, okay? Far away,
  222. 12:11they remain exactly as they are because
  223. 12:13all these information flows ultimately
  224. 12:15trap people in a world that drifts
  225. 12:17their minds away from what the real
  226. 12:18solutions are, right? I mean, for
  227. 12:24heaven's sake, it's obvious that, uh,
  228. 12:28it's obvious that we need to change the
  229. 12:30world, okay? But these people here are
  230. 12:35favored in a context of stagnation; I
  231. 12:37mean, none of these people tell you
  232. 12:38that we need to change the world, none
  233. 12:40of these people tell you that mental
  234. 12:42suffering is also a political issue,
  235. 12:44okay? Nobody tells you that. They want
  236. 12:52to drill into you these fake,
  237. 12:53ineffective, obviously absurd tools of
  238. 12:55resilience, so a person dedicates
  239. 12:57themselves to all this instead of
  240. 12:58seriously dealing with their mental
  241. 13:00health, until they feel worse and worse
  242. 13:02, they get sicker and sicker. And then
  243. 13:08in the end, when they reach the limit,
  244. 13:09where do they go? Where do you think
  245. 13:12they go? They come to us doctors, they
  246. 13:15come to us psychologists, to us
  247. 13:17psychotherapists, to us real health
  248. 13:19professionals, the evidence-based kind,
  249. 13:21okay? Which doesn't mean we aren't
  250. 13:26spiritual people, it simply means we
  251. 13:28don't spout. It's a very
  252. 13:31different thing. My Italian podcaster
  253. 13:35friends, not spouting doesn't
  254. 13:37mean not being spiritual. Okay? That's
  255. 13:42the point, because in the end, all
  256. 13:44these people are being manipulated and
  257. 13:45pushed away from real solutions for
  258. 13:47their mental health problems, because
  259. 13:49that's the point, okay? Because these
  260. 13:54people abuse the medical profession,
  261. 13:56they abuse medical and psychological
  262. 13:58terms and bend them to their businesses
  263. 14:00, because for these people,
  264. 14:01spirituality is a business. It's a
  265. 14:08business in the form of retreats, books
  266. 14:10, conferences, things they do for
  267. 14:12newspapers, for TV, for consultations.
  268. 14:19These are people who are practicing
  269. 14:20medicine without a license. I went to
  270. 14:22look at some of them, pure abuse,
  271. 14:24because they offer consultations, they
  272. 14:26act as coaches, okay? Terms that mean
  273. 14:30nothing in their world. I am a big fan
  274. 14:34of the word coach when it's used by
  275. 14:36serious people, psychologists,
  276. 14:38psychotherapists, in serious contexts.
  277. 14:41For example, for ADHD, coaching,
  278. 14:46Serious coaching done by serious people
  279. 14:48with serious educational backgrounds
  280. 14:50that rely on serious, evidence-based
  281. 14:52theories makes sense, but these people
  282. 14:54offer existential coaching,
  283. 14:56experiential coaching, retreats. Now
  284. 15:00there is also this thing about
  285. 15:02psychedelia, so these are people who
  286. 15:03send you to do strange things in
  287. 15:05strange places, okay? Or who put you
  288. 15:08through cathartic experiences. Some of
  289. 15:11these, moreover, in my opinion, even
  290. 15:13have a bit of a cult-like flavor. Eh,
  291. 15:18I've seen some situations where they
  292. 15:20talk about characters who have a
  293. 15:21cult-like flavor. They have a cult-like
  294. 15:26flavor. Okay. Out there, mental health
  295. 15:30is discussed in a dangerous way when it
  296. 15:32is linked to these specific forms of
  297. 15:34spirituality, to these strange words,
  298. 15:36okay? Which are mixed with
  299. 15:40neuroscientific concepts. That's why
  300. 15:45let's remember that neuroscience is now
  301. 15:46the key that all these people use to
  302. 15:48give the dignity of science to their
  303. 15:49. Okay? So I urge you, guys and
  304. 15:56girls, guys and girls, try to stay away
  305. 15:59from these forms of spirituality, okay?
  306. 16:04Try to stay away from anyone who wants
  307. 16:06to replace doctors, psychologists, and
  308. 16:08certified psychotherapists. Certified,
  309. 16:12okay? Okay. Make sure they are people
  310. 16:15who don't give you generic advice,
  311. 16:16because I hear hallucinating things out
  312. 16:18there. I mean, besides, the big
  313. 16:22difference between a doctor, a
  314. 16:24psychologist, and these charlatans,
  315. 16:26these, I don't know, pundits,
  316. 16:27podcasters, call them whatever the hell
  317. 16:30you want, who invite other pundits,
  318. 16:32other charlatans, other gurus, and who
  319. 16:34can say whatever they want. I cannot
  320. 16:37say whatever I want, okay? I cannot
  321. 16:42tell you that mindfulness meditation
  322. 16:44has the evidence to cure, I don't know,
  323. 16:46autism, ADHD. I can't tell you that. I
  324. 16:52can say what it is useful for, maybe
  325. 16:54for some of these conditions, different
  326. 16:56mental functionings. I cannot tell you
  327. 17:01that it will cure your depression, I
  328. 17:02don't know, instead of psychotherapy. I
  329. 17:05cannot tell you that, okay? I
  330. 17:10can only say things that have a basis
  331. 17:11of truth and scientific evidence. Okay?
  332. 17:16Out there, however, it is full of
  333. 17:18people who can say whatever they want
  334. 17:20under any title, because to be a
  335. 17:22neuroscience expert you just need to
  336. 17:24make 500, 600, 700 videos where you
  337. 17:26talk about neuroscience in a half-assed
  338. 17:28way and you become a neuroscience
  339. 17:30expert in this world. Okay? Clearly, so
  340. 17:34I always say, eh, and I say it to
  341. 17:36myself too, okay? I say it directed at
  342. 17:39myself as well. When you listen to my
  343. 17:44videos, just as when you listen to the
  344. 17:46videos of these spiritual types or
  345. 17:48these weekend scientists, always go and
  346. 17:50verify, guys, always go and verify even
  347. 17:52when it’s me telling you things. If
  348. 17:57you’re my fans, if you’re
  349. 17:58interested in my educational approach,
  350. 18:00if you’re interested in the things I
  351. 18:02tell you, always go and verify, eh, go
  352. 18:04do some in-depth research. Now you have
  353. 18:08a smart way to use artificial
  354. 18:10intelligence: go and do some serious
  355. 18:12fact-checking. Ask for some extra
  356. 18:15verification, see for yourselves,
  357. 18:17dedicate yourselves to the culture of
  358. 18:19critical thinking. Eh, unfortunately,
  359. 18:21the absence of critical thinking is a
  360. 18:24huge problem, a huge problem is the
  361. 18:26lack of authentic mastery of culture.
  362. 18:31And in a world of hyper-information,
  363. 18:33this is all a problem because,
  364. 18:35obviously, as a doctor, psychiatrist,
  365. 18:37and psychotherapist, I get lumped in
  366. 18:39with any random Sunday guru on a
  367. 18:41podcast. Eh, for many people, we’re
  368. 18:45the same thing, okay? Actually, maybe a
  369. 18:48bit less, because I don’t have a
  370. 18:50beard and I don’t wear
  371. 18:51mandarin-collar linen shirts. Eh, I
  372. 18:55don’t talk about souls, subtle
  373. 18:57energies, or things of that nature.
  374. 19:01Alright, please, I urge you, stay alert
  375. 19:03. If you want to hear some serious
  376. 19:08things about mental health, especially
  377. 19:10regarding the world of neurodiversity,
  378. 19:12let me tell you that you absolutely
  379. 19:14must come to Bologna on November 28th,
  380. 19:162026. I will also be talking about
  381. 19:20these things during my speeches. I mean
