0:44questions about a series of things that
0:46happen in Central Park on the night of
0:48April 19th of 1989.
0:51before I do that I'd like to advise you
0:53of your rights with respect to
0:54statements you may make now okay
0:57you have the right to remain silent and
0:58to refuse to answer any questions do you
1:00understand
1:02anything that you say can be used
1:04against you in court do you understand
1:06you have the right to consult a lawyer
1:08now before any questioning and have a
1:10lawyer present during any questioning do
1:12you understand
1:13could you please answer it loud yes you
1:17have no lawyer or cannot afford a lawyer
1:18a lawyer will be provided for you now
1:20free of charge before any question do
1:22you understand
1:25now that I've advised you of your rights
1:27are you willing to tell me the truth
1:28about what happened in Central Park on
1:30the night of April 19th of 1989. yes
1:33before I go any further I just want to
1:35say it is now 12 35 it is Friday April
1:3821st of 1989. present in this room as I
1:41told you I'm Elizabeth letter I'm an
1:43assistant district attorney also
1:44president Tim Clemens who is an
1:46assistant district attorney in New York
1:47County
1:49and detective Nugent who you have
1:52already met I believe have you met
1:53detective music before

2:03when you spoke to detective Nugent
2:05earlier did you make a statement to him
2:08about what happened in Central Park on
2:11the night of the 19th and before the
2:13detective took that statement from you
2:14did he advise you of his of your Miranda
2:16Rights yes

2:56us when you went to Central Park on the
2:59night of April 19th of 1989.

10:01all part of a group of 30 people about

13:54um you saw a detective Nugent earlier do
13:58you think detective Newton is a tall man

14:30what happened when he came out

15:55and did he knock him down that way what
15:58did he do after he knocked him down he
16:00might start stopping him what exactly

16:04um he stopped on his stomach kicking
16:07with his face everybody was joined it on
16:10this and foreign
16:18did you see anybody take any food from

17:12was this man screaming was he crying no

17:20funny though he was dead who thought he
17:22was dead Steve and Kevin
17:25why do people think that he was dead
17:29so fast I hit the floor and all you see
17:34a black and he fell out and fell asleep
17:37when you say you fell asleep were his
17:39eyes closed and he was knocked out he
17:42wasn't moving anymore and you were able
17:45to see his eyes were closed yeah because
17:47by the front
17:49about a friend he was gay
17:52I'm sorry I didn't understand no he sent
17:54his comment but it was scary
17:57it's like everybody rushed him at the
17:59same time all 30 people I know it's
18:02about good five five to ten did any of
18:06the people who were the people that you
18:07saw stopping him Steve Kevin
18:11now
18:13okay when you talk about Al is that
18:15Alfred Morris yes you know where Al
18:18Morris lives
18:24did these guys say anything when they
18:26were kicking and stopping no are they
18:30about the living body there I told him
18:34did anybody take beer from him what did
18:37they do with the beer do it away okay
18:40anybody pour anything on him
18:45foreign
18:53to put advice to graduate people who did
18:55that he fell out drunk he had to put our
18:58business out of his head so the reason
19:00you thought it was a good idea was not
19:02just so that he wouldn't get run over
19:03but so that if someone found him they
19:05wouldn't think that he'd been beaten up
19:07whose idea was it to put him in the
19:09grass that was your idea yes and did
19:12anybody move him to the grass yes who
19:14did that oh
19:18it was
19:23a couple of new face out there I don't
19:25know the names
19:27not the people like Kevin or Raymond
19:31Santana not those people
19:36like that citizens you think it was
19:39yeah all right
19:41what happened after he was moved to the
19:45grass
19:47removed myself further
19:50we say two people on the beds they were
19:53about the rest of people that was going
19:54to dance and said
20:01now you had said earlier that you were
20:04near a field that had baseball markings
20:06on it when you put the this bum on the
20:09grass was that near that field the field
20:11is for the uh the field was further up
20:14from
20:15you were still walking toward the field
20:17or had you already passed the fields
20:20so it was after you put the bomb in the
20:23grass that you continued to walk toward
20:26the field
20:27uh we walked toilet as you go out we're
20:30ready to go out and we said two people
20:33in advance
20:38they said who said let's speed up the
20:41mail Kevin
20:48who said that oh

20:59I'm sorry I thought Kevin was yeah

21:15with him so he's decided not to do it
21:18but why didn't other people want to do
21:20that huh
21:22if they was out with their girlfriend or
21:25something then we'll get filled with
21:26then when that happened to them so it
21:30was Kevin's idea to do it and when he
21:32suggested it nobody wanted to join in so
21:35then he said oh let's not so he was the
21:37one who first suggested it and then when
21:40nobody wanted to help him he said nah
21:42somebody was about to help him with a
21:44daughter

21:48so he moved up and you continued going
21:51toward the baseball fields
21:54you see the leather guy he was no more
21:56it was a fresh cut fresh
21:58what does that mean when you say like
22:00did you say a fresh cut yeah right it
22:03was no ball it was nice

22:17I just want to say I'm sorry uh one of
22:19the police officers came in and removed
22:22a Podium I'm sorry I made some
22:23Interruption
22:25um I'm sure you have seen the uh video
22:27camera we're taping the statement and
22:30we're recording it on a tape recorder
22:32honestly but I think that that happened
22:33out of the view of the camera and I just
22:35wanted to say
22:37that's what the noise was
22:39you were describing a person that was a
22:42fresh cut yeah he wasn't a bomb he was
22:45like one of us just like he plays he's
22:48clean yeah what did he look like was he
22:50black or Spanish or white or
22:53he's black right was he by himself
22:57and was he walking towards you or yeah
23:02what happened when he walked towards you
23:05um
23:06no Stephen said
23:12everybody said it too he said no
23:16he'll be about to leave my lord said
23:17somebody says something for the hell of
23:19it so he changed that person he ran
23:25fast he got away
23:28and we didn't catch ready for real while
23:31I'm chasing back no more was there
23:33someone there that night that you saw
23:36um a black male who had two gold Front
23:39Teeth
23:41you remember seeing somebody who had two
23:43little teeth in the front
23:47and did you see
23:49foreign
23:57you said that this fresh cut he was
24:00asked for money and he did he give
24:02anybody money no he just ran did he run
24:04back the way he had come or did he run
24:06he ran off to the fifth
24:09he ran into the park and did anybody
24:12chase him if it was changed after fall
24:15off a few minutes
24:19did you chase after him no did you see
24:22who did chase after him uh
24:25this is
24:27I don't know the people you don't know
24:29their names no
24:30after they chased after him and didn't
24:32catch him did they come back to where
24:33the rest of the group was yeah they
24:36moved up towards the field okay what
24:38happened then and we say I bought we see
24:40the biker
24:42to buy it put together with two people a
24:45male and a female the male is in the
24:47front the funeral was in the back and
24:49were they coming towards you
24:52attack them
24:54who said that huh do you remember
25:00song
25:01the bike is kind of slowed down between
25:05anybody telling you know we want to go
25:07have you ever ride fast and everybody
25:09was here everybody
25:16so he got away he was able to ride
25:19through and pass the group
25:22let me go back for a minute
25:24um before you went into the park that
25:26night did you do any drugs no
25:29did you smoke any cracks any pot do you
25:33do any cocaine
25:34did you have any kind of alcohol no were
25:37you straight when you went in yes
25:38yes and you didn't have any drugs or any
25:40alcohol when you were in the car no all
25:42right
25:43for those people on the bicycle got away
25:46did anybody chase after them no
25:48what happened next
25:50a little while further up if there was a
25:53runner coming and everybody running
25:55towards his way he was coming towards
25:57the highway and he sent all of us he's
26:00turned back around and there's a little
26:01breaking coming and he wanted a biker
26:03don't come towards our way so the bike
26:06around him with they're both the same
26:08way did you guys chase after him
26:12were you able to see what that genre
26:13looked like uh
26:17was that jogger running on a
26:19paved Road or was he running on a dirt
26:22path
26:26okay uh what happened next so
26:32there's a coughliness
26:34Alfred he said
26:39he said
26:40don't throw Rockets
26:56coming out
26:58and somebody yelled down go back in your
27:01car before we rushing hanging back
27:05so he went hey instead of close the door
27:07he pooped he pulled out of CB he started
27:10talking so everybody calling the cops
27:14so I said yeah
27:16so we looked down towards the exit of
27:19104th Street
27:22and remember that I said the police car
27:24coming around on the big Spotlight
27:27hitting everybody
27:29so I'm better
27:31everybody read towards
27:35um I forgot never delay
27:38is that the one that has a fence around
27:39it is that the residence
27:42on the reservoir did some people run a
27:45different way yeah okay where did you
27:48run I ran towards
27:50um going toward the west side
27:52did you run toward the reservoir no
27:56how many people ran with you it's so far
28:00the same one down I ran with you were
28:05you together or did he just run in the
28:07same direction
28:09was he close to you when you were
28:10running yeah how close was he
28:15was close right beside you yeah it was
28:17cool who else besides Al was running
28:19with you I don't know

28:25the two of you were in the front and
28:28there were other people behind you
28:31do you know who was in the other group
28:33that ran a different way
28:35so far I don't know if I told the
28:38reservoir
28:42my dog
28:44with black tape going around me what did

29:01the day that the accident happened
29:04he was there earlier in that same day
29:08so they never was running

29:46all right and what is it very heavy
29:50what's it made out of all right is it

30:21trying to come and do our line so you

30:30it's like it's like a slam nothing stand

31:46on the paved Road near where the horse
31:48path is so so you were running away from
31:51the police yeah he's going down into the
31:54where all the trees is at
31:56put on
31:58with water waterfalls and all that down
32:01there's a stream in there and is that
32:03down a fairly Steep Hill yes
32:12you were running away from the police
32:14you were running away from the police

32:18um were you afraid the police would get
32:20you because of what happened to the bum
32:22yes
32:23and so you were hiding from the police
32:28you when you ran down
32:30the stream yeah
32:32that's what I say and he officers and
32:39did you see
32:41any joggers there did you see any
32:44joggers running
32:48were you running through trees yeah
32:51going straight down
32:52straight down to the trees

32:59I'd like to show you a picture
33:06before I showed you let me just see if

33:25picture and ask you does that look like
33:28where you were running

35:31the night that you were there the cars
35:33probably wouldn't have been there but do

35:43when you say the field you're talking
35:44about the baseball field and if you come
35:47down from the field there's a little
35:49over here from there there's a hill and
35:52then and then a little bit of a paved
35:54Road and then a Long Hill is that where
35:56you were running that 90s could you turn
35:58the picture and point it toward me
36:01and show me
36:02show me if you can on that picture where
36:04were you running
36:06does it show in the picture no okay can
36:09you show me is it more toward you or
36:12more away from you
36:14one on the side toward me
36:18but it was in that same area
36:21Maybe

37:01when you look at that picture does that

37:10the stream in the back of that picture

37:29there
37:31what happened when you were down there

37:39as a result
37:45I wasn't left it was a lot of water a
37:47lot of mud on the dirt
37:49everything I stepped in mud and I jumped
37:52after myself on the dirt dried dirt and
37:55ran across and I stepped into a stop
37:59you stopped with somebody else I would

38:04behind you

38:46brush there right trees and sticks

38:52what was the very first thing that
38:54happened that Drew your attention to
38:57where those three people were with the
38:58lady

39:01something what was it so I knew it
39:03wasn't a rabbit so remember to make
39:05noise coming towards trees and stuff
39:07because I heard Larry gigler and I come
39:10our runner coming down the hill
39:13and I got further further down into
39:18go home

39:22okay did you hear that was that a man's
39:24voice or a woman's voice
39:26but right before that you heard some
39:29giggling and what other noise were you
39:32hearing
39:33shut up that's for her
39:36please so I stopped I stopped in pause I
39:39want to sit down one for the aisle where
39:41was that noise coming from in
39:42relationship

39:51down by the stream from there by the
39:54strip was up the hill

40:11was saying that I was right here and he
