- 0:00forth as many times as I ever cared
- 0:02through a man I grew up as a commercial
- 0:05fishing I'm supposed to be fishing I'm
- 0:07not supposed to be doing
- 0:09this but I guess I'm a fisher of men
- 0:21am now after the trial last I went to
- 0:24one of the most notorious prisons in the
- 0:26United States in Baltimore City Mar
- 0:30entry at 954 for Street where just 2
- 0:33weeks before I got there guard had been
- 0:36disembed this is where I was at
- 0:40accused and branded the worst thing
- 0:43possible a child
- 0:46killer I stepped off that bus and
- 0:48handcuffs and shackles and waist chain
- 0:51and took those little tiny steps you
- 0:53have to
- 0:54take that 300 and some lb door slammed
- 0:58shut on my wife and I could touch either
- 1:02wall by going like
- 1:07this I could take three steps and be to
- 1:10the
- 1:11front from the back of the cell but this
- 1:14was my place the stainless still to sit
- 1:16there in a
- 1:20rack I have a kindred spirit photograph
- 1:24this
- 1:25man standing to my
- 1:28left unique but it's not unique to 130
- 1:33other eight former death row inmates who
- 1:36have been exonerated by other means only
- 1:4017 of those have been DNA
- 1:43ex I thought my life was
- 1:46over I've seen people get so mortified
- 1:50and so caught up in this place that I
- 1:52called home now because this was my
- 1:55life death
- 1:57row I seen him get so up in it that they
- 2:00would take two number two pencils and
- 2:02shove them right through their eyes
- 2:05because they didn't want to see it
- 2:06anymore they didn't want to feel it
- 2:10anymore hang them hung themselves or
- 2:14took drugs and just went off and people
- 2:18it was a horrible
- 2:19place to
- 2:21be but this was my
- 2:25life I started reading every book I
- 2:27could possibly think of and figure out
- 2:30way to get back in court I was an
- 2:33innocent man so that meant to me that
- 2:35the real killer was still out there I
- 2:38had to go find out who this 6'5 curly
- 2:41blond hair man was and get freedom from
- 2:45me but not just for
- 2:47me for d
- 2:49h like Bonita sitting over here the
- 2:52victims all this is etches rap against
- 2:56us the judge didn't take no time to S me
- 3:02death and that's what it was my case was
- 3:05overturned in 19 886 by a piece of law
- 3:10called Brady information this means that
- 3:12the police department or I mean the
- 3:14prosecutors in this case in Baltimore
- 3:16County this is where the case TR
- 3:19withheld information about another a
- 3:23suspect actually there was held a lot of
- 3:26things we can't withhold the truth
- 3:29anymore an adversarial system that just
- 3:32it cannot be adversarial it's the
- 3:37truth this was my life and I went
- 3:39through a new trial and everybody come
- 3:42back and point out five identification
- 3:44Witnesses and all that's the
- 3:47God is the bar there that's the GU
- 3:50that's
- 3:51him all of us one right after the other
- 3:56they held a line up on a Monday I was
- 3:58arrested on the Thursday all the
- 4:00witnesses in the case not to watch
- 4:02t said don't watch t you arrested the
- 4:05suspect and by the way his name
- 4:08is I wonder to think you have left that
- 4:13part my life was indeed over the court
- 4:19rendered me guilty again and I went back
- 4:22to prison an
- 4:25in along I went through so many
- 4:27different trials and tribulations in
- 4:29place I had nowhere to go nowhere to be
- 4:32I just
- 4:35was I had nothing to do I just could
- 4:38read and try to figure out what was
- 4:40wrong I read every book from Stephen
- 4:42King to gal psychology and try to find
- 4:45some piece in this world the Bible Quran
- 4:48everything I could think of it to get
- 4:50closer to some spiritual meaning for all
- 4:58this and nothing came but one
- 5:02day I was sitting in uh myself C and the
- 5:06priest sent down two officers to talk to
- 5:10me and this was in
- 5:131993 I had already submitted for DNA
- 5:18dioxy Rob ACI I was the first one from a
- 5:22capital conviction who ever submit such
- 5:24a
- 5:25test I didn't know that at the time I
- 5:27really didn't care about that wanted to
- 5:30get my
- 5:33freedom the priest was sitting there in
- 5:35the little room and the lady friend had
- 5:38come to see me every week from the
- 5:41church was sitting there and you were
- 5:43both
- 5:44weeping and I knew something had
- 5:48happened my mother passed
- 5:51away he died just 5 months before the
- 5:57real truth came out
- 6:00I had to go to see her in handcuffs and
- 6:03shackles and kiss her goodbye and go
- 6:05back to that place I called home my
- 6:10life but my mother was the reason I
- 6:12could read the book that found out the
- 6:15truth in
- 6:16my and she used to tell me and I was
- 6:19crying and the priest was talking to
- 6:21me Kurt don't Despair and I all a sudden
- 6:24I hear my mother she was about this
- 6:2812 looked up to me and said that that's
- 6:31unbelievable you're my
- 6:35son but she told me how to read and she
- 6:38used to say things like stand up for
- 6:41something or you'll fall for
- 6:45anything and stand up for your
- 6:49friends just stand up and I was in this
- 6:52van I was going back to Jess to uh go
- 6:56back to this cell and I hear my mother's
- 6:58voice resonate just like through this my
- 7:00voice is resonating through this Hall
- 7:02through this
- 7:04church stand up and it got louder and I
- 7:07could hear my mother's voice and it said
- 7:09stand up and it got louder by the time I
- 7:11got back to the Jess Annex where I was
- 7:15St at the
- 7:17cut I was literally off the floor
- 7:20straining against the chains with just
- 7:22grin on my face and tears streaming down
- 7:25my
- 7:27face because I also remember the last
- 7:30thing I could remember was my mother
- 7:32said right is
- 7:38light I knew that the truth in my life
- 7:42was coming
- 7:43back on June uh 28th
- 7:471993 the DNA results came back and I was
- 7:51100% excluded as a person responsible
- 7:54for D Hamilton's
- 7:58murder
- 8:05but that life was sure live cuz when I
- 8:07got out the prosecutors in this case
- 8:09said well if we had DNA evidence in 1984
- 8:13we wouldn't have prosecuted Mr
- 8:14Bloodworth but we're not prepared to say
- 8:16he's
- 8:23innocent what is wrong with these
- 8:26people I have no idea and I kept pushing
- 8:30and every time I talk about the case and
- 8:32I go in front of Congress and I speak in
- 8:34front of Congress about this thing
- 8:36called the innocent protection act and
- 8:38then it's DNA testing program it's now
- 8:40called the KT bloodsworth post
- 8:42conviction DNA testing program try to
- 8:44help men that have DNA but we don't have
- 8:47no DNA all the time out of 138 people
- 8:51that have been exonerated 177 of them
- 8:54are DNA exonerations we have to have all
- 8:57the needs like seven Witnesses Rec a
- 9:00testimony
- 9:08about you had that little
- 9:11B it's changed it's all changed
- 9:15everybody's telling something else it's
- 9:18a story like M said we've been Hood
- 9:28WI
- 9:30and it's got to
- 9:34change I pushed and pushed and push to
- 9:37get the DNA test done in D Hamilton's
- 9:40case and guess what they were so
- 9:42interested in solving this CRI when I
- 9:44caught them I said look I got this new
- 9:46thing it's called cotus it's a DNA
- 9:49database where you have all these people
- 9:50it's a National Database have a state
- 9:52database and it was all combined with
- 9:54all these different things
- 9:58and I said let's submit the test we
- 10:00don't have the money Mr BL I said well
- 10:02how much can it be I'll pay for it I
- 10:05don't
- 10:06care he said we can't do that Mr blor if
- 10:09you're still a suspect that would be
- 10:12unable
- 10:17really now the day I was released in
- 10:201993 did they get it in 1994 when I was
- 10:24Bor and got $300,000 from my trouble
- 10:30that's $3.50 an
- 10:32hour or more maybe a couple
- 10:36P did they test the evidence in ' 94 95
- 10:4196 97 98 99 2000 2001 2002
- 10:482003 the fall of that year they
- 10:52fin submitted to DNA in D Hamilton's Mur
- 10:55case 10 years
- 10:58later
- 11:00I was sitting in my office and the phone
- 11:02rang and it was right on the caller IDE
- 11:04it said Baltimore County
- 11:07government I thought the last time I
- 11:09talked to them it didn't turn out too
- 11:14well but I answered the voice I answered
- 11:16the phone and was a same shill voice I
- 11:18heard in two murder trials calling me a
- 11:22monster said don't be fooled by the
- 11:24monster that sits in that
- 11:27chair Sy OD remember what the witnesses
- 11:30said about
- 11:32the they had a man that identified me on
- 11:36TV that they called aible
- 11:40wit and let him come to the
- 11:44line so this voice this woman it was an
- 11:48Brook the prosecuting attorney that
- 11:50called me a monster was on the other
- 11:52line Mr Bloods worth I want to talk to
- 11:54you and I'll meet you anywhere in the
- 11:56state we have an update on the Hamilton
- 11:58murder case I can't tell you over the
- 12:01telephone so I met her at the Burger
- 12:03King in Cambridge and she sat there and
- 12:08told me that they had a cold hit in the
- 12:11database of the real killer of dawn
- 12:16H and guess what he was not
- 12:196'5 he was
- 12:225'6
- 12:2460b and he lived break down a tear from
- 12:27me
- 12:30years it's a tragedy that we live in in
- 12:34this world when on flimsy
- 12:38evidence weak is
- 12:40water we cannot execute a
- 12:45man K to sh R play guilty to Dawn
- 12:48Hamilton's
- 12:51murder he got M from prison because I
- 12:54told the uh prosecutors in this case Mr
- 12:58blood you want us to do you got the
- 13:00death py for
- 13:02this and I said
- 13:13no he not going
- 13:16nowhere he don't have he not going a
- 13:19place he's stuck in a room he's never
- 13:21going to get out of and the sentence
- 13:22don't even
- 13:23start until after he finished his 45
- 13:26years sentence he got in fory trying to
- 13:29rape another woman in F point he was
- 13:31originally released 2 weeks before Don
- 13:33Hamilton's murder for two attempted
- 13:35rapes at two little girls in the
- 13:37Baltimore area and slipped through the
- 13:43cracks he pled guilty to avoid the death
- 13:46by and I did not stop because now I can
- 13:49hold himself accountable what he's
- 13:52done it's not that we don't want to
- 13:55punish these folks we just can't take
- 13:56their life no more because if you do
- 14:00that you're going to kill
- 14:03me or youry Davis
- 14:16wow so I'm telling each and every one of
- 14:19you as you sit here today and look at me
- 14:22you're looking at Troy
- 14:25Davis you're looking at tro Davis you
- 14:29looking into one of themselves look in
- 14:31the mirror you're Troy
- 14:34Davis you cannot stop this we need to
- 14:38stop this execution in the death in in
- 14:41the United
- 14:43States it is imperative in this
- 14:47execution must be
- 14:49Haled I wrote a letter to the governor a
- 14:52long time ago when Cho case first came
- 14:56out and
