  1. 0:00A simple shepherd whom no one
  2. 0:03considered worthy of becoming king, but
  3. 0:07God chose him. God himself was with him
  4. 0:13in every battle, from lions to bears to
  5. 0:17Goliath. This isn't just the story of a
  6. 0:22king, it's the story of faith and God's
  7. 0:25plan. The King David Series: From a
  8. 0:28shepherd to a great king. Israel's
  9. 0:30first king, Saul, had turned away from
  10. 0:33God's commandments. God had chosen a
  11. 0:36new king, but no one knew about it. God
  12. 0:40sent Samuel to Bethlehem, to the home
  13. 0:43of a man named Jesse. "I will show you
  14. 0:46whom to anoint. O prophet, have you
  15. 0:53come in peace? Yes, I have come to
  16. 0:56offer a sacrifice to the Lord." Jesse
  17. 1:01brought his sons before Samuel. Eliab
  18. 1:05came first. Surely this must be the
  19. 1:08Lord's chosen one. Don't look at his
  20. 1:11appearance or stature. God doesn't see
  21. 1:16like a human being. One by one, Jesse's
  22. 1:20seven sons came before Samuel. The Lord
  23. 1:24didn't choose any of them. Are all your
  24. 1:28sons here? The youngest is still
  25. 1:32tending sheep. The youngest son was an
  26. 1:39ordinary shepherd. His name was David.
  27. 1:45Call him immediately. His name was
  28. 1:51David. As soon as David came in, God
  29. 1:58said, "Get up, anoint him." God was
  30. 2:08about to change history. The Lord has
  31. 2:18chosen you. From that day on, the
  32. 2:27Spirit of the Lord rested especially on
  33. 2:30David. "I am just a shepherd!" God
  34. 2:42makes ordinary people do extraordinary
  35. 2:46things. Even after his anointing, David
  36. 2:52returned to his sheep. David was still
  37. 2:59an ordinary shepherd. But God was
  38. 3:03preparing something big for him. He
  39. 3:07would care for the sheep all day and
  40. 3:08praise the Lord at night. "The Lord is
  41. 3:12my Shepherd. I will not want for
  42. 3:15anything." But the life of a shepherd
  43. 3:19was not easy.
  44. 3:21Dangers were ever present in the
  45. 3:23wilderness. A ferocious lion attacked
  46. 3:34the flock. The lion grabbed a sheep and
  47. 3:42started running. But David did not run.
  48. 3:50"I will not lose my sheep." But David
  49. 3:52stood alone against the lion. With the
  50. 4:00Lord's help, he rescued the sheep. The
  51. 4:10Lord is my strength. Some time later,
  52. 4:17another test came. This time a huge
  53. 4:27bear attacked the herd. The Lord is
  54. 4:38with me. This God has given him victory
  55. 5:03again. All glory to you, Lord.
  56. 5:18Meanwhile, King Saul's life was
  57. 5:21becoming dark. We need a skilled
  58. 5:32harpist. David of Bethlehem plays the
  59. 5:40harp very well. Bring him to me. War
  60. 5:54had broken out between Israel and the
  61. 5:56Philistines. The two armies stood face
  62. 5:59to face.
  63. 6:01Send warriors. If he defeats me, we
  64. 6:15will become your slaves. But no one
  65. 6:22dared to face him. Was there no brave
  66. 6:42man left in Israel?
  67. 6:49Meanwhile, in Bethlehem, David was
  68. 6:52still serving his father. Take food for
  69. 7:00your brothers and go to the battlefield
  70. 7:02. David obeyed and set out for the
  71. 7:11battlefield. As he arrived, Goliath
  72. 7:20emerged again. Who will fight me? The
  73. 7:42entire camp retreated in fear. Who is
  74. 7:53this Philistine who challenges the army
  75. 7:55of the living God? Why have you come
  76. 8:01here? What have I done? I am just
  77. 8:12asking. "Did you hear what that boy
  78. 8:19said? He is not afraid of the giant."
  79. 8:22David's words soon reached King Saul. "
  80. 8:29You cannot fight that giant. The Lord
  81. 8:39saved me from the lion and the bear. He
  82. 8:49will save me from this Philistine too."
  83. 8:54Saul was astonished. "May the Lord be
  84. 8:59with you if you want to go," Saul said.
  85. 9:11"I am not used to this." David took off
  86. 9:18his armor. He was trusting in God, not
  87. 9:25human strength. He put five smooth
  88. 9:34stones in a small bag. He put five
  89. 9:40smooth stones in a small bag. "The Lord
  90. 9:50is my shield and my strength." Now the
  91. 9:54whole field was quiet. All eyes, all
  92. 9:57eyes, were on David. "Am I a dog that
  93. 10:07you come to me with a stick?" The
  94. 10:18entire Philistine camp laughed. "You
  95. 10:23come with a sword and a spear. But I
  96. 10:33come to you in the name of the Lord of
  97. 10:36hosts." A young shepherd named Golyer
  98. 10:48stood in awe. "I will destroy you."
  99. 11:01David did not turn back. He ran forward
  100. 11:04. He placed a stone in his slingshot
  101. 11:18and launched it with all his might. It
  102. 11:29struck Goliath squarely on the forehead
  103. 11:31. The entire field was stunned. The
  104. 11:43giant lost his balance and fell to the
  105. 11:46ground. The
  106. 11:48Lord has given victory. The Lord has
  107. 11:59given victory. That day the whole world
  108. 12:10learned that victory comes not from
  109. 12:13size but from faith. After Goliath's
  110. 12:19defeat, David became the hero of all
  111. 12:21Israel. But one man was unhappy with
  112. 12:24him. The king who once loved David now
  113. 12:29wanted to take his life. One song was
  114. 12:33about to change everything: "
  115. 12:37I will not leave him alive today.
  116. 12:41But no one can kill the one whom God
  117. 12:43protects." This journey from the palace
  118. 12:47to the caves was to become the most
  119. 12:49difficult test of David's life. All
  120. 12:52Israel rejoiced after Goliath's defeat.
  121. 13:06These words to the 10,000 filled Saul's
  122. 13:16heart with jealousy.
  123. 13:19Now all that remained was the kingdom.
  124. 13:24David, as before, played his harp and
  125. 13:27offered peace to Saul.
  126. 13:34But that day, jealousy robbed Saul of
  127. 13:37his wisdom. "I will kill him right now.
  128. 13:44" David immediately stepped aside. God
  129. 13:57protected him. Saul understood that
  130. 14:07Jehovah was with David. Wherever David
  131. 14:19went, David would find victory. Glory
  132. 14:25to David! Glory to David! King Saul's
  133. 14:36son, Jonathan, became David's dearest
  134. 14:39friend. "May Jehovah be a witness among
  135. 14:50us forever." But Saul's anger only grew
  136. 14:56stronger. "Kill David as soon as you
  137. 15:03get the chance. David, flee! My father
  138. 15:14wants to kill you." That night, David
  139. 15:22left the palace. Saul sent his soldiers
  140. 15:31in every direction. "O Jehovah, you are
  141. 15:46my refuge!" He who once lived in the
  142. 15:52palace was now hiding in caves. David
  143. 16:01was now a fugitive, but God had not
  144. 16:03abandoned him. His most difficult
  145. 16:06journey was about to begin. What if
  146. 16:11your greatest enemy confronts you, and
  147. 16:15his life is in your hands? This is the
  148. 16:23opportunity; your enemy is in your
  149. 16:25hands. But David did not choose revenge
  150. 16:33. He chose forgiveness. This decision
  151. 16:36would prove who the true king is. You
  152. 16:39are my rock and my fortress. Slowly,
  153. 16:42distressed, intimidated, and oppressed
  154. 16:45men began to arrive at David's side.
  155. 16:48Approximately 400 men rejoiced. "Fear
  156. 16:54not, the Lord, the LORD, is with us."
  157. 17:03Saul's anger remained unabated. "Find
  158. 17:07David, wherever he may be hiding." Saul
  159. 17:13set out with 3,000 chosen soldiers.
  160. 17:23Every cave, every hill, every path was
  161. 17:27searched. One day, Saul came to the
  162. 17:34very cave where David was hiding. "
  163. 17:44Today the Lord has delivered your enemy
  164. 17:46into your hands." David slowly
  165. 17:58approached Saul, but he didn't kill him
  166. 18:04. He only cut off a corner of his
  167. 18:07garment. "I will not lay a hand on the
  168. 18:17Lord's anointed. No one will lay a hand
  169. 18:29on a king." Saul safely left the cave.
  170. 18:47"My lord, King Saul," Saul looked back.
  171. 19:03"
  172. 19:04I could have killed you today, but I
  173. 19:06didn't. But I didn't. David, you are
  174. 19:16more righteous than I." Saul's heart
  175. 19:24melted for a moment. David chose not to
  176. 19:34take revenge. He left justice to God.
  177. 19:44The man God wanted to make king first
  178. 19:48learned to forgive. So his heart was
  179. 19:53about to change again, and David would
  180. 19:55meet his dearest friend Jonathan for
  181. 19:58the last time. To be continued. King
  182. 20:03Saul was once again thirsting for
  183. 20:05David's life. Soldiers were everywhere,
  184. 20:07and there seemed to be no escape. Just
  185. 20:12then, David's dearest friend Jonathan
  186. 20:15came to meet him for the last time. A
  187. 20:19farewell that became history. Was this
  188. 20:22the last meeting between two friends?
  189. 20:24Would Saul capture David this time? Or
  190. 20:27would God once again protect his chosen
  191. 20:31servant? Saul calmed down for a moment,
  192. 20:34but jealousy again seized his heart. If
  193. 20:37David lived, my kingdom would be gone.
  194. 20:42He again gave orders to capture David.
  195. 20:45Find him and this time, do not let him
  196. 20:49escape. Jonathan, having understood
  197. 20:54everything, set out to meet his friend.
  198. 21:04In the wilderness, two true friends met
  199. 21:07for the last time. Do not fear, the
  200. 21:16Lord is with you. You will one day be
  201. 21:27king of Israel, and I will be second
  202. 21:36after you. They both renewed their
  203. 21:45covenant of friendship before Jehovah.
  204. 21:56"May Jehovah be witness between us
  205. 21:58forever." Now it was time to leave. May
  206. 22:16Jehovah keep you safe. They parted ways
  207. 22:24. They did not know that this would be
  208. 22:27their last meeting. Meanwhile, Saul's
  209. 22:35army once again drew close to David. It
  210. 22:42seemed escape was now impossible. The
  211. 22:55Philistines had attacked Israel. Saul
  212. 23:02had to abandon David's pursuit and
  213. 23:05return to the battle. "O Jehovah, you
  214. 23:16have protected me again." During those
  215. 23:21nights in the wilderness, David wrote
  216. 23:24many psalms that still give people hope
  217. 23:27. The trials were not over, but God was
  218. 23:34with him every step of the way. The
  219. 23:42shepherd God had chosen was gradually
  220. 23:46preparing to become a great king. The
  221. 23:50final battle with the Philistines was
  222. 23:52about to begin. Would King Saul and
  223. 23:55Jonathan survive? And would David
  224. 23:58become Israel's new king?
