- 0:05- Every parent's worst nightmare.
- 0:07- Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart...
- 0:08- Was kidnapped from her home. - Police in Salt Lake City
- 0:11say they have hundreds of leads.
- 0:13- In the kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart.
- 0:17- When my case finally came to trial
- 0:19about eight years after I was rescued,
- 0:21I felt as I stood up on that stand,
- 0:24and as I gave my testimony,
- 0:26it was just question after question after question.
- 0:27I mean, it was just--felt like facts on a sheet of paper.
- 0:30It didn't feel like it was real.
- 0:32It didn't feel like it was really my story.
- 0:35- Next, we turn to the latest on the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping.
- 0:38- I wanted to say, "You heard the facts,
- 0:40but you don't understand what it was like.
- 0:42You have no idea."
- 0:45"I have a knife at your neck.
- 0:47Don't make a sound.
- 0:48Get up and come with me."
- 0:51- This 14-year-old girl
- 0:53is at the center of a mystery and an intense search.
- 0:56- I wasn't just raped, I was chained up,
- 0:59I was starved, I was denied water,
- 1:02I was denied food.
- 1:06- This is a sick, misguided person.
- 1:08- People still say to me,
- 1:10"Why when your captors took you out in public
- 1:12didn't you escape?"
- 1:14"They took you to a party. You couldn't escape then?"
- 1:18"You encountered police officers.
- 1:20Why didn't you tell them who you were?"
- 1:22"Did you sympathize with your captors?"
- 1:26"Why didn't you try to save yourself?"
- 1:29The truth is...
- 1:30I made my rescue possible.
- 1:34And I want people to know that.
- 1:36- It's real.
- 1:37- Now, I want to tell my story,
- 1:40the whole story.
- 1:42The real story of what really happened.
- 1:57[harp music]
- 2:00♪
- 2:10- I grew up very much...
- 2:14like that happily-ever-after little girl.
- 2:20Looking forward to that day
- 2:22when your prince charming finally comes,
- 2:25and you finally meet him, and you get married,
- 2:27and you live happily ever after,
- 2:28I think that was very much
- 2:31my mentality prior to my kidnapping.
- 2:34And so he took that away from me.
- 2:41The three words that come to mind
- 2:42that really describe it
- 2:46are terror,
- 2:49boredom,
- 2:50and rape.
- 2:53- Bag, B.
- 2:56- Uh-hmm.
- 2:58[suspenseful music]
- 3:01♪
- 3:10- My whole kidnapping, I was living night and day
- 3:14in threat of my life, and not just my life,
- 3:16but my family's life.
- 3:18It was like Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee
- 3:21both were invincible.
- 3:23He got away with everything that he said
- 3:25he'd get away with.
- 3:27So, when people would say,
- 3:29"Why didn't you run?"
- 3:30"Well, how could I run?"
- 3:33[dramatic music]
- 3:36♪
- 3:43- In February, we had the Winter Olympics here
- 3:46in Salt Lake City.
- 3:47And my father had been diagnosed
- 3:49with a brain tumor.
- 3:51He went in for surgery quite soon
- 3:53after he was diagnosed,
- 3:55and...
- 3:58passed away two months after.
- 4:00- When he died, I remember just kind of thinking,
- 4:04"This isn't right.
- 4:05Why did he have to die?"
- 4:08- And his funeral was the day
- 4:09before Elizabeth was kidnapped.
- 4:13It was at the end of the school year
- 4:16and Elizabeth was going
- 4:18to receive some awards.
- 4:20And the principal had called her
- 4:21to play her harp that night
- 4:25so things were just kind of crazy.
- 4:27- That night, I think we had both been
- 4:31pretty tired with Lois' father
- 4:35passing away
- 4:36and we were just exhausted.
- 4:39- I was trying to cook dinner, waiting for them to come home,
- 4:41trying to figure out where the harp, you know,
- 4:43how we're gonna get that put in the car.
- 4:45And I burned the potatoes.
- 4:48You know, the smoke was not very pleasant.
- 4:51And I went to the window and cranked it open.
- 4:55And so then, um, I remember
- 4:58having our meal,
- 5:00trying to get to the school,
- 5:02and we were late.
- 5:03I was a little bit on edge,
- 5:05you know, just thinking,
- 5:07"This is not working out the way it was supposed to."
- 5:10- We went home. And I remember going into my bedroom
- 5:13that I shared with my younger sister.
- 5:15- Me and Elizabeth had gotten into a routine
- 5:17where we were reading a book.
- 5:19And that night, we were reading
- 5:20Ella Enchanted. - ...Ella Enchanted.
- 5:22Yes, I like those princess
- 5:25happily-ever-after books.
- 5:27I'd read out loud for so long,
- 5:28my voice was getting dry.
- 5:30And I put the book down and went to bed.
- 5:33[suspenseful music]
- 5:36- The next thing I remember
- 5:39was being awakened
- 5:42in the middle of the night.
- 5:43[suspenseful music]
- 5:46- And it was still dark.
- 5:48And at first,
- 5:50I heard this voice.
- 5:52And when I first heard that,
- 5:53I thought it had to be part of a dream.
- 5:59Then I heard it again.
- 6:00This time, as the voice spoke,
- 6:02I not only heard it, but I opened my eyes.
- 6:06Standing above me
- 6:07was this dark shadow of a man.
- 6:10And I remember him saying, "I have a knife at your neck.
- 6:14Don't make a sound.
- 6:16Get up and come with me."
- 6:17And that second time that I heard this voice,
- 6:23I mean, I was instantly awake.
- 6:27I could feel the knife at my neck.
- 6:32"What if I don't do what he says?
- 6:34He might take my sister. He might hurt my sister.
- 6:36I have to go."
- 6:38- And she got up out of bed
- 6:40and they went into the bathroom and the closet.
- 6:43- Going in to get a pair of shoes
- 6:45meant that we were going outside,
- 6:47we were going somewhere other than my home.
- 6:49I was asking him why he was doing this. And he said,
- 6:52"I'm taking you hostage for ransom."
- 6:56- And they go out the hallway,
- 6:58and we--we had some squeaks on the floor
- 7:00so you could kind of tell where they were.
- 7:03- As he was taking me out through my house,
- 7:05he had whispered to me, you know,
- 7:06"If you scream, if you yell,
- 7:09like, I'll kill your family or I'll kill you."
- 7:12And really, at that point,
- 7:14I thought maybe he already had killed some of my family.
- 7:17Seemed like either do what he says and go with him,
- 7:20or have your neck cut open and die.
- 7:26I could hear the grandfather clock ticking
- 7:28from downstairs.
- 7:29"Dad, please wake up."
- 7:32I was praying in my mind,
- 7:34"Mom, can you hear me?
- 7:36Please wake up and save me."
- 7:42He just led me down the stairs
- 7:45and he still had his knife on me.
- 7:51- I was in my bed for a long time
- 7:52trying to work up courage enough
- 7:54to run--to run across and tell my parents.
- 7:56So, the first time I got up,
- 7:59I got to about my bedroom door,
- 8:02and I just freaked myself out.
- 8:05I ran back in bed and I kept thinking,
- 8:07you know, "Someone's got to tell
- 8:09my parents what happened."
- 8:12- He led me downstairs
- 8:13into the kitchen and out the backdoor.
- 8:18I just remember thinking, "This is real.
- 8:21This is really...
- 8:23happening to me.
- 8:25I'm--I'm being kidnapped."
- 8:28[suspenseful music]
- 8:30- We got up to the top of this vacant lot
- 8:33and he, I guess, had glimpsed some headlights
- 8:36coming down the road.
- 8:39I remember him whispering saying,
- 8:42"If this work is true, God,
- 8:44then let this car pass."
- 8:46He was kidnapping me and then he was saying,
- 8:50"God," mentioning God in the same moment.
- 8:54It just didn't make sense.
- 8:57"If you move, I'll kill you.
- 9:02One tiny peep
- 9:03and you know what I will do."
- 9:08As soon as that police car was out of sight,
- 9:12he was up and running.
- 9:13He had me up and running.
- 9:17We started climbing up the trail.
- 9:19The reality finally hit me,
- 9:21"This isn't a joke.
- 9:22This isn't a nightmare.
- 9:24This is real.
- 9:26I've got to run."
- 9:28But he was always right behind me,
- 9:30the knife always at my back.
- 9:36There finally came a point
- 9:37when I remember stopping him
- 9:40and just saying,
- 9:43"Well, if you're just gonna rape and kill me,
- 9:45please do it here."
- 9:48Because in my mind I was thinking,
- 9:49"I want my parents to know
- 9:51what happened to me.
- 9:53I wanted them to find me
- 9:54even if it was just my body."
- 9:58He had this smile
- 9:59and it was just--
- 10:02it was bone-chilling.
- 10:04And he--he gave this smile and he said,
- 10:06"Oh...
- 10:09I'm not...
- 10:11going to rape and murder you, yet."
- 10:19[suspenseful music]
- 10:21♪
- 10:33- I finally worked up enough courage again
- 10:35to run across to my parents' bedroom and tell them.
- 10:39- Mary Katherine comes,
- 10:40wandering into the room,
- 10:42and says, "Dad, you know,
- 10:43somebody has taken Elizabeth."
- 10:47- Just being woken up
- 10:49to something like that was very startling,
- 10:51and thinking like, "Oh, you know,
- 10:54she's had a bad dream."
- 10:57- "She's got to be here somewhere.
- 10:59This--this can't be happening."
- 11:02- The thing I remember first was my dad
- 11:04just coming in here, and say, "Hey, is Elizabeth in here?
- 11:06What's--where is she?"
- 11:10- As I made the rounds upstairs,
- 11:12and then went down the stairs,
- 11:14into the kitchen,
- 11:15once again, from the top,
- 11:17Mary Katherine reiterated,
- 11:20"Somebody has taken her,
- 11:21you're not going to find her."
- 11:24- And I went running downstairs
- 11:26and there was a big panel of light switches.
- 11:29And I remember I just hit them all.
- 11:33And as I looked over in the kitchen,
- 11:36I saw the window that, um, I had opened
- 11:39to let the smoke out.
- 11:41The screen had been cut. I could see that.
- 11:44And then I screamed and that was the beginning
- 11:47of our nightmare telling,
- 11:48"Ed, we need to call the police."
- 11:50- "Wow, Elizabeth's gone.
- 11:52Something really awful
- 11:54has happened to our family."
- 11:57- There wasn't a handbook on knowing what to do.
- 12:00- I remember waking up that night
- 12:03to probably one of the worst, um, sounds
- 12:06I've ever heard and that was my mom
- 12:09um, just crying.
- 12:12And I remember going downstairs
- 12:14because my--I've never heard
- 12:15my mother cry like this.
- 12:18- I've never once in my life seen my mom
- 12:20acting the way she was, it was beyond me.
- 12:24But they called the police.
- 12:26- 911.
- 12:27- I just started picking up the phone,
- 12:29calling everyone that I could,
- 12:30all my friends, family
- 12:34and, you know, said,
- 12:36you know, I've got to have your help.
- 12:38- But the police were called first.
- 12:41- I knew it was really bad.
- 12:42My sister was gone.
- 12:44She was my whole world.
- 12:46I knew it was bad.
- 12:51- [panting]
- 12:56- We kept going and that scared me
- 12:58because why else was he taking me?
- 13:01Then he said something about,
- 13:03I was his hostage, he was taking me for hostage
- 13:05and I remember saying-- telling him that my parents
- 13:08would pay anything to get me back.
- 13:09I mean, they didn't have,
- 13:11like, millions of millions of dollars,
- 13:13but if that's what he wanted, I knew they'd get it.
- 13:15I knew they'd do whatever it took to get me back.
- 13:18And we got farther and farther and I stopped him again
- 13:20and I said, "Well...
- 13:23don't you realize what you're doing?
- 13:25I mean, if you get caught,
- 13:28you'll spend the rest of your life in prison,
- 13:31but I promise you, if you let me go,
- 13:35my family won't press charges."
- 13:38And then he smiled that same
- 13:39just [shudders] awful smile.
- 13:42And he told me,
- 13:44"I know exactly what I'm doing
- 13:47and I know what the consequences are.
- 13:50The only difference is,
- 13:53I'm not gonna get caught."
- 14:03When I was kidnapped, I was only 14-years-old.
- 14:05And I had grown up in a very safe environment.
- 14:08I'd grown up in a very protected environment.
- 14:13I wasn't unintelligent,
- 14:15but I was very naive,
- 14:17even for a 14-year-old.
- 14:20Looking back on it, it was, like,
- 14:22I lived to just--in a bubble.
- 14:28Life just seemed like what could possibly go wrong?
- 14:33I don't know. Nothing.
- 14:36[sirens wailing]
- 14:43- The first two people there were two policemen
- 14:46that came in, and then as Edward was calling
- 14:49his neighbors and anybody he could,
- 14:51quickly within 10, 15 minutes,
- 14:54the whole area in his neighborhood
- 14:56were mobilizing looking for her.
- 14:58- Searching, driving the streets,
- 15:00you know, searching all over trying to find her.
- 15:03- And it was about, oh,
- 15:05around 5:00 in the morning that I got a call from Ed
- 15:08and I remember sitting on the...
- 15:16sitting on the edge of my bed
- 15:21and it's a-- it's a call that you--
- 15:23you never wanna hear, you never wanna get.
- 15:26- You get a call like that, it's just,
- 15:28it's--it's so surreal.
- 15:31Everybody in the family got the same call,
- 15:33and everybody came as quick as we can.
- 15:35- 13943, no one in the...
- 15:37- When I arrived, there was a large
- 15:39police presence there,
- 15:41and also, uh, Elizabeth's extended family
- 15:43was also inside of the home.
- 15:46- I arrived there right around 6:00 AM.
- 15:49I was just blown away.
- 15:50I've never seen a crime scene
- 15:52uh, that was...
- 15:54so totally contaminated.
- 15:57That house should've been sealed
- 16:00and it wasn't, and--and--and why it wasn't,
- 16:03to this day, I'm still at a loss.
- 16:07There was just a huge inexperience factor.
- 16:09Graveyard shift officers are usually
- 16:11the youngest officers on the department,
- 16:15but that still doesn't alibi the idea
- 16:17of not doing your job correctly.
- 16:20That scene was contaminated beyond all hope.
- 16:28- I don't think I'd ever prayed
- 16:29so hard in my life.
- 16:31I just remember thinking of all the scripture stories
- 16:35that I've learned growing up,
- 16:36you know, Moses parting the Red Sea
- 16:39and Hannah feeding the children of Israel
- 16:42out in the wilderness for 40 years
- 16:43and I remember just praying and praying, thinking,
- 16:45"Oh please, if you can do all of these miracles
- 16:47for all these others, like,
- 16:49I know I'm not a prophet, but please,
- 16:50like, let me find a way to escape."
- 16:55I remember being scared, that maybe--
- 16:57maybe a way had been provided and--
- 16:59and I had missed it and that scared me.
- 17:03And he was still right there
- 17:05and he still had his knife and I--
- 17:07I remember looking at bushes and thinking,
- 17:08"If I ran and jumped behind that bush,
- 17:10would he find me?"
- 17:12I remember just being in this panic
- 17:14and this fear that maybe I had lost my opportunity,
- 17:16but there wasn't realistically
- 17:20an opportunity for me to escape.
- 17:22[suspenseful music]
- 17:26- He always made sure he was below me
- 17:28so that I couldn't run back down the mountain,
- 17:31and it was such thick
- 17:34scrub oak that running up at--
- 17:37the mountain really wasn't an option either.
- 17:46- My grandma came over
- 17:48and I fell asleep on my grandma's lap
- 17:51for a couple of hours and then I--a policeman came
- 17:54and woke me up and asked me questions.
- 17:58- Now she was the only one who saw the suspect
- 18:00and could describe the suspect.
- 18:04And that was it. There was just not
- 18:06a lot information to pursue.
- 18:10- As I walked in the front door,
- 18:12I looked off to the right where the family room was
- 18:15and--and...
- 18:18Lois was surrounded
- 18:20by family members
- 18:22and--and...
- 18:25it was the worst sound.
- 18:34It was the worst sound I had ever heard,
- 18:39just this eerie cry
- 18:42of pain and anguish.
- 18:45So, I walked into the kitchen and I was just, kind of,
- 18:48wandering around aimlessly.
- 18:50The thing that freaked me out so bad
- 18:52was that I had almost put my hands down
- 18:54on the counter and--
- 18:55and put prints and--and so forth
- 18:57and contaminated it.
- 18:59- Nothing was taped off,
- 19:01there wasn't a log of who was coming and going.
- 19:04- Finally, police say, "You can't have everyone in here,
- 19:06you know, you're--you're just ruining the crime scene."
- 19:12- I said, "Well, we're gonna get them out of this house,
- 19:16and we need to find out who they all are,
- 19:18and if they don't have ID,
- 19:20then we need to get their names
- 19:21and we need to get fingerprints from them,"
- 19:23and, um, it was just-- it was bizarre.
- 19:27- I just thought "So come on, what--what do we do?
- 19:29What do we do?"
- 19:37[suspenseful music]
- 19:38♪
- 19:53- I had on bright red pajamas.
- 19:58The sun was coming up so it was getting light
- 20:01and, yeah, red is a pretty noticeable color,
- 20:05and he was becoming more and more anxious.
- 20:07And I remember him saying, "Oh,"
- 20:08he was like, "We've got to run across
- 20:10the top of this mountain
- 20:12because you're like a flame,
- 20:13you're like a bright red flame
- 20:14on the top of a mountain and I don't want any
- 20:17early morning runners seeing you
- 20:18in your lovely pajamas or how lovely you look
- 20:21in your pajamas." Something pretty creepy.
- 20:30While he'd been taking me up the mountain,
- 20:32I actually had realized who--who he was.
- 20:34I'd recognized him.
- 20:37He saw me with my mom.
- 20:40I was out with all my siblings and my mom.
- 20:43We were getting clothes for school
- 20:45and my older brother, he said, "Mom, there's this guy
- 20:46who's asking for work.
- 20:48I think he really needs work or help.
- 20:50You know, can you help him out?"
- 20:52He was clean-shaven at the time
- 20:54and so my mom gave him five bucks
- 20:57and he didn't even ask for money,
- 20:59he did just ask for work.
- 21:01The next time I saw Brian Mitchell,
- 21:03was he actually did come and work for my dad,
- 21:06and then the next time I saw him
- 21:08after that was the night he kidnapped me.
- 21:11He later said that as soon as he saw me with my mom,
- 21:14that he just knew I was the girl he was gonna kidnap.
- 21:17He actually came down to my house
- 21:19a couple other times to find the best route
- 21:23in which he would take me to kidnap me,
- 21:26kind of, scouted the layout and everything.
- 21:28And I remember saying, "Why are you hurting my family?
- 21:32My parents tried to help you.
- 21:33Why--why are you doing this?"
- 21:35And he just--he gave, kind of, that same response,
- 21:38you know, "You'll find out in due time."
- 21:41We ran over the top of this mountain ridge
- 21:43and we started down the other side
- 21:46and he told me at this point that his wife
- 21:48was waiting for us
- 21:50and so I almost had this moment thinking,
- 21:53"Well, maybe--maybe he kidnapped me
- 21:57because they can't have kids?
- 22:01Maybe it wasn't just gonna be
- 22:03rape and murder."
- 22:06As we got further down the other side,
- 22:09he yelled out "Hephzibah."
- 22:13And then a voice yelled back "Emmanuel."
- 22:22Once we got inside the trees,
- 22:24I saw a tent set up,
- 22:26but I think really the most memorable thing
- 22:28about this whole camp was the woman.
- 22:36She looked scary.
- 22:42"She is a scary witch, stay away from her."
- 22:52She started hugging me,
- 22:53but it wasn't like a comforting nice hug.
- 23:02It was, like, she was trying to tell me that
- 23:06if I ever did anything
- 23:09that she didn't want me to do,
- 23:11I'd be sorry.
- 23:18If you can convey all that in a hug,
- 23:21that's what she was trying to convey.
- 23:25She led me inside the tent
- 23:27and she sat me down on this upturned bucket.
- 23:30I just remembered being so terrified.
- 23:34She started washing my feet
- 23:37and then she started to try to undress me.
- 23:39Well, I was...
- 23:42really shy as a 14-year-old.
- 23:45And I remember begging and pleading with her,
- 23:48telling her I'd showered last night,
- 23:51that I wasn't dirty,
- 23:52that I wasn't gonna take my pajamas off.
- 23:56She finally just said,
- 23:57"Fine, okay, put this robe on."
- 24:03I pulled it on over my head
- 24:05and then I took my pajamas off underneath,
- 24:07because she had told me that if--
- 24:11that if I didn't let her do it
- 24:14then she would have Emmanuel come
- 24:15and he'd rip my clothes off of me.
- 24:18I remember, I took my pajamas off
- 24:20but I didn't take my underwear off
- 24:21and she threatened me yet again
- 24:23that if I didn't do it,
- 24:24she'd have Emmanuel come in
- 24:25and he'd rip my underwear off.
- 24:27So I remember wiggling out of my underwear
- 24:30and then she got up
- 24:31and left me alone in the tent.
- 24:36I just remember feeling like
- 24:39I had just sunken into
- 24:41complete hopelessness, despair.
- 24:48I just remember being so confused
- 24:50and feeling so scared
- 24:52and just...
- 24:54so...
- 24:57overwhelmed.
- 25:07- [indistinct]
- 25:09- In all child abductions or any abductions, the people
- 25:12that are most prominent in the child's life,
- 25:14they all have to be cleared.
- 25:15And so the family needs to be cleared
- 25:17and eliminated as possible suspects.
- 25:20- One of the first things we wanted to do
- 25:22is find out everything we could about the family
- 25:25and the dynamics that existed in the family
- 25:27especially between the girl that was taken
- 25:29and the rest of the family members.
- 25:31- When they took us to the police station,
- 25:33Ed in one car,
- 25:34I was in another, the boys were in another.
- 25:36I said, "Can't you just take us all together
- 25:38and get us down there?
- 25:39I can't do this. Time is wasting.
- 25:42We need to be out finding her."
- 25:44And when they took us down to the police station,
- 25:46they separated us once again.
- 25:49Ed and myself could no longer be together
- 25:51and the boys, the two older boys,
- 25:54Andrew and Charles were taken
- 25:57and Mary Katherine
- 25:58was certainly off by herself
- 26:00and I felt very concerned about Mary Katherine
- 26:04knowing that here she was,
- 26:05you know, this little nine-year-old and--and that
- 26:08she was the only one that saw what happened.
- 26:12- Would sit in a room for like an hour
- 26:16just keep asking me the same questions
- 26:19and I'd give them the same answers.
- 26:21- Only a mother can comfort a child
- 26:23and help a child and, you know,
- 26:26and assure her that it's gonna be okay,
- 26:29we're gonna find her sister.
- 26:31And so it was awful.
- 26:34- That morning or that day was probably the longest day
- 26:37of my life in a lot of ways.
- 26:38It felt like we were in that police station forever.
- 26:41- I wanted to answer all their questions
- 26:42the best I could
- 26:44and, uh, just so I could be back with my family.
- 26:47- I do remember them just asking
- 26:49very pointed questions over and over and over again
- 26:53and feeling like they were digging for something
- 26:55that I felt like wasn't there.
- 26:57- I just remember the boys coming out saying, you know,
- 27:01"They think that I did it."
- 27:03- As a child and a parent, you know, it's very difficult
- 27:05because they're already questioning what they did
- 27:07or didn't do or could have done
- 27:09or shouldn't have done or whatever.
- 27:11And so when we started asking those questions,
- 27:13I think it--it's a kind of pouring salt on an open wound.
- 27:16- Quickly put aside the idea
- 27:18that something tragic had happened
- 27:20inside that house and maybe somebody got hurt
- 27:23and now this was a sort of a cover up or something.
- 27:26However, we brought in cadaver dogs
- 27:28to search that house just in case
- 27:30we were looking for a--a--a body
- 27:32that have been, you know, secretly,
- 27:35you know, hidden away somewhere.
- 27:37- Every minute that went by
- 27:38and she was not found,
- 27:41my heart sank.
- 27:44They say within the first 24 hours
- 27:46if you haven't found them, they're more than likely dead.
- 27:56- The tent door unzipped
- 27:59and in came Emmanuel, Brian Mitchell,
- 28:04and he'd knelt down next to me
- 28:07and he started to speak
- 28:08and I just--I remember saying,
- 28:11"No, just go away.
- 28:12I--just leave me alone."
- 28:16I calmed down enough
- 28:18to hear the last sentence.
- 28:21He told me that I was now sealed to him
- 28:25as his wife
- 28:26before God and His angels
- 28:28as--as his witnesses
- 28:29and that--that could never be undone.
- 28:33I just remember being filled with horror.
- 28:36I remember just screaming out, "No."
- 28:42He looked at me and he said,
- 28:43"If you ever scream out
- 28:46like that again, I will kill you."
- 28:56Over and over he said,
- 28:59"It's time for us to consummate our marriage now."
- 29:02And I remember thinking, "Wait a second.
- 29:06Does--does he mean what I think he means?
- 29:10No. No."
- 29:13And tried to go over all the reasons why
- 29:16this couldn't be legal or binding,
- 29:19why this wasn't okay.
- 29:20I was 14-years-old.
- 29:22Did he realize that?
- 29:24I told him I hadn't even started my period yet
- 29:27and that stopped him for about half a second,
- 29:29long enough for him to yell out,
- 29:32"Hephzibah, is it okay
- 29:33that she hasn't started her period yet?"
- 29:37This woman Hephzibah, Wanda Barzee,
- 29:39she yelled back, "It's fine."
- 29:43No matter how much begging or pleading
- 29:46or crying I did,
- 29:49it just didn't make a difference to him.
- 29:51He physically grabbed me
- 29:52and forced me down onto the ground.
- 29:57I thought you had to face
- 29:59each other to have sex.
- 30:02And so, I thought if I rolled over
- 30:06onto my stomach and I crossed my legs
- 30:10and I remember holding--holding my arms up
- 30:12just right under my chest so he couldn't touch me,
- 30:15crossing my legs as hard as I could,
- 30:18rolling on my stomach,
- 30:19he--he wouldn't be able to--
- 30:20he wouldn't be able to rape me.
- 30:23Well...
- 30:25I was...
- 30:28terribly mistaken.
- 30:36I remember he just...
- 30:39pulled up the robe
- 30:41and...
- 30:45raped me.
- 30:48And I...
- 30:51was devastated
- 30:54and I...
- 31:00remember just thinking,
- 31:01"How on earth
- 31:03did this happen to me?
- 31:06Why did this happen to me?"
- 31:10And I--at that point,
- 31:13he got up and he kind of smiled
- 31:14and walked out of the tent,
- 31:16left me alone in the tent.
- 31:18I just remember lying on the ground
- 31:23just feeling so shattered,
- 31:27feeling like I truly was broken,
- 31:30feeling like...
- 31:32there was no coming back...
- 31:35from this, that...
- 31:39it would be better
- 31:41if I were dead.
- 31:49If someone can rape,
- 31:52then I felt like they can murder.
- 31:59- It is my honor and privilege
- 32:01to introduce tonight's speaker,
- 32:03Elizabeth Smart.
- 32:04[applause]
- 32:09- Every single one of us
- 32:11has a story and every single one of us,
- 32:14we--we have had something
- 32:16that's happened to us in our life.
- 32:18I mean, hopefully it's not all kidnapping,
- 32:21but it's not what happens to us
- 32:25that defines who we are.
- 32:27It's what we decide to do.
- 32:28It's our choices that define who we are.
- 32:31Whatever it is you're going through,
- 32:33don't give up.
- 32:36[dramatic music]
- 32:39♪
- 32:51- When I woke up,
- 32:53I remember not opening my eyes immediately
- 32:56because I could tell that Brian Mitchell
- 32:59was in the tent with me again
- 33:01and I wanted him to leave me alone.
- 33:07That didn't work so I opened my eyes
- 33:09and there he was
- 33:11and he had a metal cable
- 33:13that he was wrapping around my ankle.
- 33:19I was begging him. I was like,
- 33:21"Please, don't put this on. I promise I won't run,"
- 33:23even though I had every intention
- 33:25of running away that night.
- 33:29I remember just saying, "Well, I won't run."
- 33:30He's like, "I know you won't.
- 33:31I'm just putting this on.
- 33:33Just in case,
- 33:35remove temptation."
- 33:39After he chained me up
- 33:41and I was looking around at the camp
- 33:42and I looked at how well-prepared it was
- 33:45and how well thought out everything was
- 33:48and I very quickly realized that
- 33:50he didn't have plans to kill me,
- 33:51that he was gonna keep me alive.
- 33:55He wanted to keep me as a possession.
- 33:58And I was like,
- 34:00"How long is it gonna be like this?
- 34:01What if it's until they die?"
- 34:05I felt like being chained up just--
- 34:08it was like insult to injury.
- 34:12I don't know. It was devastating.
- 34:22- I mean, I went over in my mind
- 34:24time and time again,
- 34:25"Why, why, why?
- 34:29Why would anyone ever want
- 34:31to take Elizabeth?"
- 34:33- Any place that--that they could have stashed
- 34:35a body or a weapon.
- 34:39- I needed to be strong
- 34:42in front of my children.
- 34:43But at nighttime, then I could let all that go
- 34:46and cry myself,
- 34:49not to sleep but cry all night long.
- 34:54- The initial information that I got was this is a...
- 34:57pretty sheltered child that, you know,
- 34:59she has music in her life,
- 35:00she has her church in her life,
- 35:02she has school in her life and her family.
- 35:04And my first thought was
- 35:05this is gonna be a cake walk.
- 35:07We've got a much more limited pool of suspects
- 35:09on this particular young lady
- 35:11than we would normally have in some of these.
- 35:13Initially, I was relatively confident
- 35:15we would have it resolved in a few days.
- 35:17- I remember, uh, Tom coming and--
- 35:19and saying that we needed to go in front of the public
- 35:22to plead our case to have volunteers come out
- 35:25and help search for Elizabeth the next day.
- 35:27- Ed's brother Tom worked for the Desert News
- 35:30and he was familiar with media
- 35:33and we just felt blessed to have him
- 35:35and that he could navigate the way for us.
- 35:40- I spent a lot of time with Ed
- 35:42trying to get the word out
- 35:44to newspapers and to...
- 35:47the news stations.
- 35:48One of the things that I thought I could do
- 35:50was get her photos out there, get it on the internet,
- 35:53get it to the news stations,
- 35:55but they would not allow us to release
- 35:57anything for three hours.
- 35:59Three hours, sixty-five percent of the people
- 36:01are killed in a situation like that.
- 36:03- The latest on a developing story
- 36:05and it involves every parent's worst nightmare.
- 36:07Authorities in Salt Lake City, Utah
- 36:10say 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart
- 36:12was taken from her bedroom
- 36:14in the middle of the night.
- 36:15- Elizabeth, if you're out there,
- 36:18we're doing everything we possibly can to help you.
- 36:22We love you.
- 36:23We want you to come home safely to us.
- 36:27- We had every major
- 36:30newscaster morning show that you can think of
- 36:33doing live feeds and stuff like that.
- 36:35And it was important to get Ed and Lois out there.
- 36:38And we did get them out there that first morning.
- 36:41- We just can't even fathom
- 36:44who it is or why they took her.
- 36:47- It's painful if you see any of it
- 36:49how devastated they were.
- 36:50- We can't believe that it's really happened.
- 36:55- We know exactly what areas to cover.
- 36:56- We go straight right here
- 36:58and then go left on the main road.
- 37:00- So anybody who has a car,
- 37:02raise your hand.
- 37:03- There's a hospital near our home,
- 37:05it's called the Shriners Hospital
- 37:07and that's kind of where the search headquarters were.
- 37:09- That next morning,
- 37:10we got there about 6:00 or 6:30
- 37:12and there were people that were already showing up.
- 37:15- Location of Smart.
- 37:17- The line just kept growing bigger and bigger and bigger.
- 37:19By the end of that day,
- 37:21there was, uh, over 2,000 or so
- 37:23that had come to do the search.
- 37:25- Put that down right there.
- 37:27- Family members would walk out of the doors
- 37:30of the search center
- 37:32and just see the waves
- 37:34of volunteers who come.
- 37:37And it wasn't one type of volunteer.
- 37:39There was a biker,
- 37:41a housewife, a businessman,
- 37:43students.
- 37:45- Some of the kids from the neighborhood came down
- 37:48and wanted to give us this, uh, this poster
- 37:51that, uh, a bunch of the neighborhood kids had signed.
- 37:54It was so overwhelming at times
- 37:56that we'd have to turn around and walk back
- 37:59into the search center and try to gain composure
- 38:02of how overcome we were by--
- 38:06by the efforts of the volunteers.
- 38:10[dramatic music]
- 38:13♪
- 38:18- That first day, um,
- 38:22I-I remember crying so much
- 38:25and Barzee is looking at me and being like,
- 38:27"Oh, you should be happy. It's your wedding day."
- 38:30She's like, "But if you're gonna--
- 38:32if you're gonna cry then take today to cry
- 38:35because you can't cry anymore after."
- 38:40That didn't really happen though.
- 38:42I cried for a long time afterwards.
- 38:46Even though I had been raped,
- 38:47I was still very protective over my body.
- 38:50And I remember just begging him to leave me alone
- 38:54and to not touch me ever again.
- 38:56And he--and he'd say things like,
- 38:57"Well, we're man and wife.
- 38:59That's what man and wife do. They have sex.
- 39:01And it's important that you engage
- 39:03in all parts of a relationship
- 39:06between man and wife."
- 39:07And I remember just begging and begging and telling him,
- 39:10just, I'd do whatever he wanted
- 39:12just not that.
- 39:14He went ahead and raped me yet again.
- 39:18And there was just nothing I could do about it.
- 39:21I mean, I couldn't run away.
- 39:22I couldn't fight him off.
- 39:23I already tried.
- 39:25He was bigger, he was stronger.
- 39:28There's just nothing that I could do
- 39:30until it was done.
- 39:33He was the master,
- 39:35I was the slave.
- 39:37That was the real lesson of the day.
- 39:39[dramatic music]
- 39:52- So far, some 39 hours
- 39:53after the disappearance and kidnapping
- 39:55of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart...
- 39:57- I absolutely know that
- 40:00Elizabeth is still alive.
- 40:01- I think that what is really important tonight
- 40:04is the candlelight vigil, the prayer vigil.
- 40:08- I mean that first week,
- 40:09I felt like I didn't sleep at all.
- 40:12And you just--
- 40:16you just can't turn yourself off.
- 40:19It's just impossible
- 40:20because you just keep on thinking,
- 40:24"What can I do? What should I be doing?
- 40:26What's going to bring her home?"
- 40:27And that just does not stop
- 40:29along with worrying about,
- 40:31you know, what she's going through.
- 40:34You know, is anyone caring for--
- 40:38I mean, it's just-- it's horrific.
- 40:42- We had to kind of decide between us
- 40:46that one of us would--
- 40:47would be there for the family and the children
- 40:50and try to do the day-to-day, um, living
- 40:54that had to be done
- 40:55and then one of us would go
- 40:57and do the press conferences
- 40:59and meet with the media
- 41:01because we knew that it was very, very important
- 41:04to keep her face out in the public's eye.
- 41:07It finally caught up with him
- 41:09and, you know, he just had a breakdown.
- 41:16- It was about three days.
- 41:19Just one night, I just, um,
- 41:22couldn't get control of myself.
- 41:25And I was crying and shaking.
- 41:28And my dad came over and said,
- 41:30"Ed, if you just can't do this,
- 41:32I'm gonna take and commit you."
- 41:34And so he did.
- 41:36He put me in the hospital and, you know,
- 41:38I think they tried to sedate me there.
- 41:40And all night long, I was,
- 41:44you know, the basket case.
- 41:50- I didn't even know it happened.
- 41:51I was meeting in the morning with the--
- 41:54with the morning shows saying that
- 41:55Edward would be out soon
- 41:57and then I went up to Ed's house
- 41:58and they said, "No, Ed's in the hospital.
- 42:00He was taken to the hospital in the middle of the night."
- 42:02- I wanna ask you about Elizabeth's father
- 42:03because I understand he collapsed.
- 42:05- Edward literally hasn't had any sleep for three days.
- 42:08He wanted to be here very badly.
- 42:10- Couldn't sleep, couldn't think,
- 42:12couldn't do anything.
- 42:14The following morning, I, uh,
- 42:18uh, my bishop came over,
- 42:20he and my dad gave me a blessing.
- 42:22And in there was this reassurance that
- 42:26I needed to go home
- 42:27and be--be there.
- 42:30I needed to be the father
- 42:32and I needed to do the things
- 42:35that, um, are expected of me.
- 42:39And, um, and I got up and I went home.
- 42:48- It was probably the third day
- 42:51that I--that I was held captive.
- 42:57We were sitting and...
- 43:00he was talking and talking
- 43:02and talking as usual.
- 43:03And he stopped talking for a minute and all of a sudden,
- 43:07I remember hearing my name...
- 43:09being yelled.
- 43:12I felt like I recognized the voice.
- 43:14I felt like there's a familiar voice.
- 43:16I felt it was like the voice of my Uncle Dave.
- 43:18Um, I mean, it just sounded like someone I know.
- 43:21And maybe it wasn't but--
- 43:25but I felt like it was.
- 43:27And then I heard my name being called again.
- 43:31And I remember being so excited thinking,
- 43:33"They're gonna find me, they're gonna find me.
- 43:34That it's gonna be okay."
- 43:37When he said that he'd kill me
- 43:38and he'd kill anyone who came into the camp
- 43:41I mean, I knew I wasn't gonna scream out.
- 43:46But I couldn't stop hoping and then--
- 43:49and then I didn't hear the voice again.
- 43:51And I didn't hear a voice ever again after that.
- 43:55And that was pretty disheartening for me
- 43:58because they were so close.
- 44:01I mean, I could hear them.
- 44:03And then I never heard them again.
- 44:09- I remember going in early Saturday morning
- 44:12to see how Ed and Lois were doing.
- 44:14And when I came in,
- 44:15there was a law enforcement officer
- 44:17at the bottom of the stairs
- 44:19and they asked if Ed and Lois were up.
- 44:20And I said yeah.
- 44:21I remember seeing Lois
- 44:23was staring out, uh, their bedroom window
- 44:27looking out over the city and...
- 44:33you could see
- 44:36the anguish on her face
- 44:38just kind of a blank stare out in the city
- 44:41and she asked--asked me if, you know,
- 44:44"Where is she?
- 44:46What, uh, what's being done to find her?"
- 44:49And I told her that she had to come to the search center
- 44:52and see this huge effort that would--
- 44:55it would help give her hope.
- 44:57- We appreciate so much what you've done.
- 44:58It's so overwhelming to see.
- 45:02They told me that people were here
- 45:04but this is overwhelming.
- 45:06Thank you. I feel your love.
- 45:08I appreciate it.
- 45:09I know we're gonna find her.
- 45:10Thank you.
- 45:12- We had over what, 10,000 people that
- 45:15came out and helped in searches.
- 45:17And I felt the reason they did that
- 45:19was because they looked at Elizabeth
- 45:20as being their daughter.
- 45:22You know, "This could've been my daughter."
- 45:24- And they would hug me and, you know,
- 45:26try to console me by saying,
- 45:28"Oh, we'll--we'll get her. We'll find her.
- 45:29You know, she's not far."
- 45:33And that brought somewhat peace to me
- 45:36knowing that I wasn't the only one
- 45:38that wanted her back
- 45:39or I wasn't the only one
- 45:41that was looking for her.
- 45:43- I don't know anything but...
- 45:45- I love you. - I love you too.
- 45:47- At a point, she became everybody's girl.
- 45:57- Further down to where
- 45:59Dry Canyon leads to Shoreline Trail.
- 46:01- When you think of bloodhounds
- 46:03and helicopters and search person,
- 46:06you just think,
- 46:07"Well, surely someone would find you."
- 46:09I mean, we had walked the whole way,
- 46:11surely a dog would be able to just
- 46:13follow our scent right into our camp.
- 46:15And I remember helicopters being right over where--
- 46:18where our camp was hidden.
- 46:25And the helicopter felt like it was right above us
- 46:27and the trees we're blowing down
- 46:28and the tarp was shaking,
- 46:30and the tent was being blown down.
- 46:37I just kept waiting for guys
- 46:39to jump out of the helicopter and rappel,
- 46:40be in their full body gear
- 46:42and come and rescue me,
- 46:43yet that never happened.
- 46:47When I no longer heard
- 46:49the helicopters flying overhead,
- 46:52it was disheartening
- 46:54because it made me feel like
- 46:56maybe people had given up,
- 46:57maybe they weren't looking for me anymore,
- 47:01that I had just become old news,
- 47:03and nobody cared anymore.
- 47:11- Okay. Next, we turn to the latest
- 47:13on the Elizabeth Smart Kidnapping.
- 47:15Police confirming they have taken
- 47:1612 computers from the family.
- 47:18- We hope they do their job and--
- 47:20and if that means we come under scrutiny then--
- 47:23then so be it.
- 47:24- Police eye relatives in probe.
- 47:27- All of a sudden,
- 47:29there's a story in the Salt Lake Tribune
- 47:31that it looks like it's an inside deal.
- 47:34- It looks as though the screen was cut
- 47:35from the inside.
- 47:37- And it also said that there had been a family member
- 47:40who had not passed his polygraph.
- 47:42- That's according to police sources
- 47:44quoted by The Tribune.
- 47:45- You have to have sleep or you can't function
- 47:47and you'll just break down.
- 47:48Maybe one brother doesn't like another brother,
- 47:51you--don't get me wrong in that.
- 47:53This family is... - We love each other.
- 47:55- We love each other... - We love each other.
- 47:56- ...more than any brothers possibly could.
- 47:58In my case, I went for five days without sleep
- 48:00and then I was polygraphed
- 48:02and there's no way you're gonna get anything
- 48:04other than inconclusive after five days of no sleep
- 48:06when you're hearing things. I can guarantee it.
- 48:09- I've had many innocent people
- 48:11fail polygraphs.
- 48:13And especially in cases that involves
- 48:16kidnappings or child homicides.
- 48:20There's an awful lot of innocent family members
- 48:23that show up guilty on a polygraph
- 48:25because they feel guilty,
- 48:27they think that there's something
- 48:28they should've done better
- 48:30that would've protected their child,
- 48:31then their child wouldn't be missing
- 48:33or their child wouldn't be dead.
- 48:34- It lasted seven hours and...
- 48:39I was inconclusive.
- 48:40- It was like getting gutted basically.
- 48:44- All of the family
- 48:46and the extended family, we would looked at them.
- 48:48We'd looked at their credit card, their travel--
- 48:50and we'd looked at computer hard drives
- 48:52and we'd found nothing to implicate
- 48:54those family members.
- 48:55Although there were still elements
- 48:57who kind of still thought it was gonna come back to that.
- 49:01In that particular case,
- 49:02the way that that was leaked,
- 49:04what we had was had some people
- 49:05that were trying to, um,
- 49:08probably push forward their theory in the investigation.
- 49:12- The family's disappointed by today's
- 49:13Salt Lake Tribune article
- 49:15which is highly speculative
- 49:17and implies it's unusual to investigate
- 49:19the family in this type of case.
- 49:21Investigating the family is common practice.
- 49:24- Things just turned on the family really bad at that time.
- 49:28- One of the reasons he targeted me
- 49:30was because I was LDS,
- 49:32was because I was Mormon
- 49:34and he knew what the Mormon beliefs were
- 49:37and so he knew how I would feel about them
- 49:39and so...
- 49:42he would introduce some new punishment or torture
- 49:46because of what I believed in.
- 49:52The first time he ever brought alcohol
- 49:54back to the camp,
- 49:56I abstained for religious reasons
- 50:00but he'd say, you know,
- 50:01Christ sunk below all things,
- 50:03you know, he was out among the sinners,
- 50:05he was blessing them,
- 50:06do you think you're better than he is?
- 50:09I kept refusing and kept refusing
- 50:11and he said well, I'm not gonna let you sleep either.
- 50:13I'm not gonna let you have water,
- 50:14you can't have any of this food
- 50:15until you drink this wine.
- 50:17And I just had this tiny little sip
- 50:19and he said no, you have to drink the whole cup.
- 50:24But then he poured another cup and he said
- 50:26okay, now you have to drink this one as well.
- 50:29And so that's what he'd do, he'd have me drink
- 50:31and then he'd rape me.
- 50:33I was there for him
- 50:35to do whatever he wanted to do.
- 50:38- Joining us this morning from Salt Lake City,
- 50:40Elizabeth Smart's father, Edward Smart
- 50:42and her uncle, David Frank.
- 50:44Do you have anything new, anything hopeful?
- 50:46- I'm unaware of any new,
- 50:47you know, really conclusive leads.
- 50:52- One of our first priorities
- 50:54was getting a list of all the people
- 50:56that, um, worked at the Smart residence.
- 51:00- We had somewhere in the neighborhood
- 51:01of 60 contractors
- 51:03who had worked on that Christiana House.
- 51:06- Richard Ricci, um, was one of the people
- 51:07that was given to us on the list
- 51:09as having worked around the house.
- 51:10- He was a handyman in the house,
- 51:12uh, he was familiar with the kids in the house.
- 51:15- He had a long history of drug abuse.
- 51:17I mean, Richard was a career con.
- 51:20I think he had probably spent more of his adult life
- 51:22in jail than out of jail.
- 51:24- Ricci behind bars of the Salt Lake County Jail
- 51:26on a parole violation...
- 51:28- We did feel like he must've had something to do with it
- 51:31because it was not beneath him
- 51:33to steal from us.
- 51:34- I mean, stolen jewelry
- 51:36and different artifacts from,
- 51:37you know, my parents' home.
- 51:38- He did this late at night
- 51:41coming around the bed,
- 51:42the whole MO,
- 51:43it looked very, very compelling.
- 51:46- First, I was shocked he was out of prison
- 51:49but then I was shocked that he was actually
- 51:51working in this house.
- 51:52He shot at a cop during a pharmacy burglary,
- 51:55he's a dangerous, bad guy
- 51:58and that's sort of how he came into play
- 52:00so prominently.
- 52:12- In the first weeks
- 52:14of my enslavement,
- 52:16my captivity,
- 52:17there wasn't anything for me to do
- 52:18except having to sit there
- 52:20and listen to Mitchell
- 52:22talk nonstop
- 52:25about how he was gonna go out
- 52:27and kidnap seven young girls
- 52:29and we'd all be his wives
- 52:31and would all come to accept him and love him
- 52:34and I just would remember thinking,
- 52:36"What the hell are you thinking?"
- 52:43There's no way I'll ever think that way about you.
- 52:49Do you--do you have any idea
- 52:51how much you've taken from me?
- 52:53Do you have any idea
- 52:55what you've done to me?
- 53:02- Tonight is exactly four weeks
- 53:04since an unknown gunman entered the bedroom
- 53:07of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart
- 53:09and stole her into the night.
- 53:11Police and FBI agents hauled off two full bags
- 53:14from the home of former Smart family handyman,
- 53:17Richard Ricci.
- 53:20- There was a lot of work that was done on Richard Ricci,
- 53:23including finally having him take a polygraph,
- 53:26which he passed.
- 53:27- So his wife Angela had said that, uh,
- 53:29he was at home sleeping all night next to her.
- 53:32- I love my husband, I believe in him.
- 53:34- Ricci had an alibi and he passed the polygraph,
- 53:36that was good enough for me,
- 53:38plus more importantly,
- 53:40there wasn't any evidence he did it.
- 53:43- One of the problems is Richard started lying
- 53:45about a lot of things that were easily caught
- 53:48and the more lies that he did,
- 53:50then the more people started
- 53:52to jump to that conclusion
- 53:53well, he must be hiding something.
- 53:55- I'm representing Mr. Ricci
- 53:56here this morning, [indistinct]
- 53:58- I mean, I remember sitting in the courtroom
- 54:01as Ricci was brought in
- 54:03trying to think,
- 54:05"Could you really have taken her?"
- 54:07- Richard Ricci... - We were watching the news.
- 54:10A flash came up on the scene
- 54:12about Richard Ricci.
- 54:14- I was in my parents' room when I saw it
- 54:16and I said that I didn't think it was him,
- 54:18that it's not Richard Ricci.
- 54:20- Mary Catherine pointed to him and said
- 54:24it wasn't Richard Ricci.
- 54:27- His wife says Ricci was at home in bed
- 54:29the night of Elizabeth Smart's abduction.
- 54:32- You know, that's the best I can do there,
- 54:34he was in bed with me.
- 54:38- From the beginning, my captors told me
- 54:42that I wasn't gonna be allowed to speak
- 54:44about my family, my parents, my siblings,
- 54:47my life prior to the moment
- 54:50that he kidnapped me.
- 54:52He spoke about where his mother lived,
- 54:56as he spoke about that area
- 54:58I recognized and realized that that's where my cousin lived
- 55:01and I naively said,
- 55:04"Oh, my cousin,
- 55:06my--like, my best friend,
- 55:07she just lives like a block away from your mom."
- 55:11And, like, this was the first time
- 55:13that Mitchell didn't get mad at me
- 55:15about speaking about my family.
- 55:17A couple days later,
- 55:20he comes and he's like
- 55:21oh, I received revelation
- 55:23and you're not gonna like it.
- 55:25The Lord has commanded me to go forth
- 55:28and plunder your cousin Olivia
- 55:31to be wife number two.
- 55:33And...
- 55:36I just--I felt like I'd betrayed my family
- 55:40and I remember the day came
- 55:43and as he got ready,
- 55:45he pulled out the knife that he had kidnapped me with
- 55:48and he held it up to me and he said,
- 55:50"Do you recognize this?"
- 55:53And then he left.
- 55:54[dramatic music]
- 56:04- That night, I woke up
- 56:07to the lights on,
- 56:09lots of commotion and chaos
- 56:11and just with my--
- 56:14with hearing my dad on the phone
- 56:15with the police and hearing him say the words
- 56:19someone just tried to break into our house
- 56:21and we're related to Elizabeth Smart.
- 56:26And then kind of hearing the story from my parents
- 56:30about him cutting the window screen,
- 56:33trying to get in and...
- 56:35luckily we had picture frames across our window sill.
- 56:39As he pushed in, it knocked the picture frames off
- 56:43and that noise woke up my sister
- 56:47who was actually in the bedroom at that time
- 56:50and scared him away.
- 56:52That was my bedroom too but...
- 56:54ever since Elizabeth had been taken,
- 56:58we all slept in my parents' room on the floor
- 57:00and I think that was one of the first few nights
- 57:03that my sister decided to go back to the room.
- 57:06- The way I found out about the break-in
- 57:09was very disturbing. I mean, I heard it from
- 57:12um, Olivia's father, Steve Wright,
- 57:15and he said they were trying to come in
- 57:18through the back window,
- 57:19there was a chair up against the wall,
- 57:22you know, the exact MO.
- 57:25I immediately called my friends
- 57:27at the Salt Lake Police Department.
- 57:29Did any of them know about it? No.
- 57:32They, uh, came and took a look at it
- 57:35and, you know, they kind of brushed it off
- 57:36as being a potential copycat.
- 57:38- It just couldn't have been coincidence
- 57:40that it was someone else.
- 57:41It had to have been him.
- 57:43- It was kind of...
- 57:46shoved off and dismissed.
- 57:48- No eyewitnesses, no fingerprints,
- 57:51no DNA left at the scene,
- 57:53there was just no information to follow up on.
- 57:55- I believed it was either a sick joke
- 57:58or it was the same guy.
- 57:59- It was obvious that it wasn't Ricci
- 58:01because Ricci was in custody.
- 58:03- So what do you know about the kidnapping?
- 58:05- I don't. - Charles,
- 58:07Elizabeth's older brother, said...
- 58:09I think Elizabeth might be alive.
- 58:11If somebody's breaking into the Wright's house,
- 58:13maybe she's alive.
- 58:15- To a lot of us,
- 58:17we looked at that as
- 58:19Elizabeth is still alive,
- 58:20it gave us hope.
- 58:23It made us want to even
- 58:25search harder to try to find her.
- 58:37- I spent more than six weeks
- 58:40tethered to the trees,
- 58:44six weeks having a steel cable
- 58:46wrapped around my ankle,
- 58:49six weeks of never moving
- 58:52more than a few feet
- 58:54beyond the center of the camp.
- 59:03Mitchell and Barzee had had a huge fight.
- 59:06She was mad that we'd been left alone,
- 59:09that he was able to eat and drink
- 59:12and then we were left up there with nothing.
- 59:14She just said that she wasn't
- 59:16gonna stay up in camp any longer.
- 59:19He wasn't gonna leave me at camp
- 59:21even though there would have been
- 59:23no way for me to get through a metal cable.
- 59:25He's like well, you're gonna have to wear a veil
- 59:27and you can't speak
- 59:29and if you say anything,
- 59:30if you do anything,
- 59:33I'll kill you,
- 59:34I'll kill your family.
- 59:36As we were headed down,
- 59:38I was actually really surprised
- 59:40at how far away we actually were from Salt Lake,
- 59:43how far of a hike it really was.
- 59:46People that passed us,
- 59:48they looked away really quick.
- 59:49They just pretended like they didn't see us
- 59:52and I remember thinking,
- 59:53"Why aren't you looking at me?"
- 59:57We started making regular trips
- 59:59down to Salt Lake
- 1:00:01even though...
- 1:00:03the places we went to
- 1:00:05were places I'd driven by
- 1:00:08or gone inside before,
- 1:00:10it still didn't feel like it was my world.
- 1:00:14One of the grocery stores that we went into,
- 1:00:16the cashier,
- 1:00:18he's like oh, there's a big party tonight
- 1:00:20and I remember we headed over to this party
- 1:00:24and I'd never been
- 1:00:26to a party like this before.
- 1:00:30- You just don't figure that somebody
- 1:00:33who's been kidnapped
- 1:00:35is going to come in to the house
- 1:00:38and have a drink with you.
- 1:00:41- It was a China Blue Party too,
- 1:00:42this is an alternate scene.
- 1:00:44Uh, we were, uh...
- 1:00:46quite the, uh, active, uh,
- 1:00:49performance art collective here.
- 1:00:52- Salt Lake's a funny place,
- 1:00:54you're either Mormon or you're not.
- 1:00:57And so the counterculture
- 1:00:59is very strong,
- 1:01:01really strong here.
- 1:01:03That particular party had
- 1:01:05a lot of different elements,
- 1:01:08college kids, punk scene,
- 1:01:09and then the usual riffraff.
- 1:01:11And fire dancers in the backyard.
- 1:01:17- We are in the backyard watching the fire spinners
- 1:01:20and these three people walked in through the back.
- 1:01:23- I remember just being there
- 1:01:25with Mitchell and Barzee
- 1:01:28and being just as scared
- 1:01:30of the people that I was surrounded by
- 1:01:32as I was of my captors.
- 1:01:35- And the man was really aggressive
- 1:01:37right from the beginning.
- 1:01:38He immediately was someone
- 1:01:40who drew all the attention to him and--
- 1:01:43and had to be managed.
- 1:01:44- He bummed a beer
- 1:01:46and I turned him onto my, uh, bootleg,
- 1:01:49homemade absinthe.
- 1:01:51- He carried the glass jar around
- 1:01:53and he kept taking big drinks of it
- 1:01:56and he eventually--
- 1:01:58someone else was like hey, you're drinking it all,
- 1:02:00so they took it away from him.
- 1:02:02- He was trying to get more and more agitated
- 1:02:04while being more and more obnoxious.
- 1:02:07I said get the prophet the hell out of the house
- 1:02:10because the punks were on his ass.
- 1:02:12- This other woman just came up
- 1:02:14and grabbed him and said
- 1:02:15you need to leave, right now.
- 1:02:17- Elizabeth didn't say anything,
- 1:02:20she was just quiet.
- 1:02:23I do recall telling her specifically
- 1:02:26to ditch David.
- 1:02:28I'm like this guy's an ass,
- 1:02:30get away, he--he is--
- 1:02:33he's trouble.
- 1:02:35Elizabeth just seemed scared and lost.
- 1:02:40I felt bad for her
- 1:02:42but I didn't feel it was my position to, uh,
- 1:02:47to do anything
- 1:02:48but advise her to leave.
- 1:02:51I would apologize to her if I saw her,
- 1:02:55that I--that I didn't recognize
- 1:02:57the pain she was in,
- 1:02:59that I didn't...
- 1:03:03take action,
- 1:03:05the whole thing was really sad.
- 1:03:13Sorry.
- 1:03:15It's just--
- 1:03:20I have a daughter,
- 1:03:23I have family, I have friends,
- 1:03:26I can't believe this kind of stuff happens. I...
- 1:03:33- I started to wonder,
- 1:03:35will I ever be rescued?
- 1:03:39Maybe I don't.
- 1:03:42And maybe I die.
- 1:03:46[dramatic music]
- 1:03:49- We were sitting at a table in the library
- 1:03:52when the homicide detective approached us.
- 1:03:56I mean, here's a detective like
- 1:03:58feet away from me,
- 1:03:59he's just right there,
- 1:04:01this is it, I'm gonna be rescued.
- 1:04:03- I remember hearing
- 1:04:05they think they found a body
- 1:04:07or they think they found the place
- 1:04:08where she was decapitated.
- 1:04:11- I'm just thinking after everything that's happened,
- 1:04:14I'm gonna die of starvation,
- 1:04:16I'm gonna die of thirst.
