- 0:00We don't need you anymore. Get out, you
- 0:01work from home freeloader.
- 0:03My sister said it, and my parents joined
- 0:05the chorus. All three of them in a house
- 0:08I owned over a puppy's accident on a
- 0:10dress. I packed my things, picked up my
- 0:12Chihuahua, and walked out. They had no
- 0:15idea what I had waiting.
- 0:17Before I tell you what happened, tell me
- 0:20in the comments where you're watching
- 0:21from. I'm Kendra, 33, a freelance web
- 0:25designer. 2 years earlier, my uncle, who
- 0:27doted on me, had given me his house. The
- 0:30title was still in his name, but he told
- 0:32me to use it as I liked. One day, my
- 0:35parents walked in, looked around, and
- 0:37decided without asking me that they'd
- 0:39move in.
- 0:40"Our old house is falling apart," my
- 0:43father said. "This one is a waste for
- 0:45you alone."
- 0:46I didn't want to, but they'd already
- 0:48planned to sell their home, so I let
- 0:50them stay.
- 0:51From day one, the comments started.
- 0:54"You're over 30. Why aren't you married?
- 0:56You're probably making money through
- 0:58some shady means, messing around on that
- 1:00computer."
- 1:01I earned more than my sister, but they
- 1:03only ever compared us. Then my sister
- 1:05Marlene showed up with a mountain of
- 1:07luggage. She'd divorced, quit her job,
- 1:09and announced she was moving in. "If
- 1:11Uncle was going to give it to someone,
- 1:13he should have given it to me." She took
- 1:15a spare room, and I was cooking dinner
- 1:17for all three of them while they
- 1:19gossiped about me within earshot. Then I
- 1:21adopted a puppy from a friend's litter,
- 1:24a tiny black Chihuahua with round eyes.
- 1:26His name was Biscuit. They complained
- 1:28for about 3 hours. Then they melted over
- 1:31his cuteness.
- 1:33One afternoon, Marlene called me while I
- 1:35was out. "Come home now, Biscuit did his
- 1:37business on my clothes." "Wash them. You
- 1:40left them on the floor. You didn't train
- 1:42him. Pay for the cleaning."
- 1:44I came home to find all three glaring at
- 1:47me. My mother said I'd never make a
- 1:49decent mother. Marlene pointed at me. "I
- 1:52don't need you or this dumb dog. Get out
- 1:54of this house. We don't need a work from
- 1:56home freeloader."
- 1:58"Who do you think pays the household
- 1:59expenses?" I said. No answer. I'd
- 2:02reached my limit. I packed and left with
- 2:04Biscuit. "Enjoy yourselves in the
- 2:06house." I said, hiding a smile. A few
- 2:09days later, Marlene called panicking.
- 2:11"Kendra, we've been told to leave by the
- 2:13end of the month. I've decided to sell."
- 2:16"You don't have the authority." "The
- 2:17title was transferred to me a month ago,
- 2:20right after you told me to leave. I
- 2:21consulted uncle. He said the house is
- 2:23yours. Do what you want and get away
- 2:25from that family."
- 2:26My parents were listening in the
- 2:28background. "Cut it out. We have nowhere
- 2:30else to live. Show some respect to your
- 2:32parents."
- 2:33"Respect?" I said quietly. "You compared
- 2:36me to Marlene for years. Who supported
- 2:38all of you? You kicked me and my dog out
- 2:40of my own house." My father begged. "I
- 2:43don't care." I said. "Fend for
- 2:45yourselves."
- 2:46I hung up and blocked every number.
- 2:49Later, I heard they were forced out at
- 2:50the last minute. With my father's small
- 2:53income and no jobs for my mother or
- 2:55sister, their lives plummeted. My
- 2:57parents now nag Marlene to find work,
- 3:00and the three of them fight constantly.
- 3:02I live in a pet-friendly apartment with
- 3:04Biscuit. I work whenever I want and
- 3:06spend my earnings only on us. "Let's go
- 3:09to the dog park, Biscuit." He wags his
- 3:11tail like it might break off. Sometimes,
- 3:14the people who call you a freeloader are
- 3:16living in the house you own. If your
- 3:18family had thrown you out of your own
- 3:19home, would you have sold it or let them
- 3:22stay? Tell me in the comments.
