  1. 0:00Kelly andne Conway uh Miss Conway
  2. 0:02welcome to the White House North Lawn
  3. 0:04which will become a familiar place for
  4. 0:06you I think uh for the next few years
  5. 0:08let me begin um with this question the
  6. 0:10presidency is about choices so I'm
  7. 0:12curious why president Trump chose
  8. 0:15yesterday to send out his press
  9. 0:16secretary to essentially litigate a
  10. 0:20provable falsehood when it comes to a
  11. 0:23small and Petty thing like inaugural
  12. 0:26crowd size I guess my question to you is
  13. 0:28why do that Chuck the president did many
  14. 0:31things yesterday and the day before that
  15. 0:33are very meaningful to America he signed
  16. 0:35executive orders to stop Obamacare and
  17. 0:38all of its problems uh many people have
  18. 0:40lost their millions of people have lost
  19. 0:42their insurance their doctors their
  20. 0:43plans so that stops right now he's going
  21. 0:46to replace it with something much more
  22. 0:48free market and patient Centric in
  23. 0:49nature and on this matter of crowd size
  24. 0:52I mean for me I think the most
  25. 0:53quantifiable points of interest for
  26. 0:55Americans should be what just happened a
  27. 0:58few months ago that brought him here the
  28. 1:0031 of 50 states he won the 2600 counties
  29. 1:03the 200 counties that went for President
  30. 1:05Obama that now went to president Trump
  31. 1:07and the fact that 2930 million women
  32. 1:10voted for Donald Trump for president
  33. 1:12they should be respected somebody should
  34. 1:13cover their voices as well I I'm about
  35. 1:16things that are quantifiable and
  36. 1:17important I don't think that I don't
  37. 1:19think ultimately presidents are judged
  38. 1:21by crowd sizes at their inauguration I
  39. 1:22think they're judged by their
  40. 1:24accomplishments uh and and we know that
  41. 1:26President Obama and his accomplishments
  42. 1:28that there's a lot of Unfinished
  43. 1:29Business there and on this matter of
  44. 1:30crowd size I think it is I think it is a
  45. 1:32symbol for the unfair and incomplete
  46. 1:34treatment that this President often
  47. 1:37receives I'm very heartened to see
  48. 1:39neelen just came out with the ratings 31
  49. 1:41million people watching the inauguration
  50. 1:44President Obama had 20.5 million
  51. 1:46watching his second inauguration for
  52. 1:48short years ago so we know people are
  53. 1:52Alo watching the inauguration on
  54. 1:54different screens and in different modes
  55. 1:58and that there was I mean for me there
  56. 1:59was a prediction of a downpour of rain I
  57. 2:01think that deterred many people from
  58. 2:03coming but no question there were
  59. 2:04hundreds of thousands of people out on
  60. 2:06the
  61. 2:07mall let me stop you here because you
  62. 2:10make a very reasonable and rational uh
  63. 2:13case for why crowd sizes don't matter
  64. 2:16then explain you did not answer the
  65. 2:18question why did the president send out
  66. 2:21his press secretary who's not just the
  67. 2:22spokesperson for Donald Trump he can be
  68. 2:25the he also serves as the spokesperson
  69. 2:27for all of America at times he speaks
  70. 2:29for all of the country at times why put
  71. 2:31him out there the for the very first
  72. 2:33time in front of that Podium to utter a
  73. 2:37provable falsehood it's a small thing
  74. 2:39but the first time he confronts the
  75. 2:43public it's a
  76. 2:45falsehood Chuck I mean if we're going to
  77. 2:47keep referring to our press secretary in
  78. 2:50those types of terms I think that we're
  79. 2:52going to have to rethink our
  80. 2:53relationship here I want to have a great
  81. 2:55open relationship with our press but
  82. 2:57look what happened the day before
  83. 2:58talking about falsehoods we allowed the
  84. 3:01Press spray to come the press to come
  85. 3:02into the Oval Office and witness
  86. 3:04president Trump signing executive orders
  87. 3:07and of course you know the senate had
  88. 3:09just confirmed General Mattis and
  89. 3:10general Kelly to their two posts and we
  90. 3:12allow the press in and what happens
  91. 3:14almost immediately a falsehood is told
  92. 3:17about removing the bust of Martin Luther
  93. 3:19King Jr from the office that no that's
  94. 3:21just flat out false and the corrected
  95. 3:25immediately why was it said why was it
  96. 3:27said in the first place because
  97. 3:29everybody is so
  98. 3:30presumptively of it's okay no excuse me
  99. 3:33oh no no no no that reporter was writing
  100. 3:36to on behalf of the press pool that that
  101. 3:40fall so it got spread 3,000 times it was
  102. 3:44corrected ex excuse and you did not
  103. 3:47answer the question I did answer
  104. 3:49question no you did not you did not
  105. 3:51answer the question of why the president
  106. 3:53asked the White House Press Secretary to
  107. 3:56come out in front of the podium for the
  108. 4:00first time and utter a falsehood why did
  109. 4:03he do that it undermines The credibility
  110. 4:05of the entire White House Press office
  111. 4:08on day don't be so don't be so overly
  112. 4:10dramatic about it Chuck what you're
  113. 4:12saying it's a falsehood and they're
  114. 4:14giving Sean Spicer our press secretary
  115. 4:16gave alternative facts to that but the
  116. 4:19point Rems wa alternative facts
  117. 4:22alternative facts four of the five facts
  118. 4:24he uttered the one thing he got right
  119. 4:26was Zeke Miller four of the five facts
  120. 4:27he uttered were just not true look alter
  121. 4:29if facts are not facts they're
  122. 4:32falsehoods Chuck do you think it's a
  123. 4:34fact or not that millions of people have
  124. 4:36lost their their plans their health
  125. 4:37insurance and their doctors under
  126. 4:38President Obama do you think it's a fact
  127. 4:40that everything we heard from these
  128. 4:41women yesterday happened on the watch of
  129. 4:43Barack Obama he was President for eight
  130. 4:45years Donald Trump's been here for about
  131. 4:46eight hours do you think it's a fact
  132. 4:48that millions of women 16.1 million
  133. 4:50women as I stand here before you today
  134. 4:53are imp poverty along with their kids do
  135. 4:55you think it's a fact that million don't
  136. 4:56have Healthcare do you think it's a fact
  137. 4:57that we spent billions of dollars on Ed
  138. 4:59education in the last8 years only to
  139. 5:02have millions of kids still stuck in
  140. 5:03schools that fail them every single day
  141. 5:05these are the facts that I want the
  142. 5:07Press Corp to cover and these are that
  143. 5:08this is why I'm here at the White House
  144. 5:11change I understand like that is not
  145. 5:13what yesterday was about so you have not
  146. 5:16answered the qu you did not answer the
  147. 5:17question what this presidency is going
  148. 5:19to be about you sent the press secretary
  149. 5:21out there to utter us falsehood on the
  150. 5:23smallest pettiest thing I don't think
  151. 5:26anybody can prove that I actually think
  152. 5:29maybe this is me as a pollster Chuck and
  153. 5:31you know data well I don't think you can
  154. 5:34prove those numbers one way or the other
  155. 5:35there's no way to really quantify crowds
  156. 5:37we all know that you can laugh at me all
  157. 5:39you want but I'm very glad
  158. 5:42laugh well but you are and I think it's
  159. 5:44actually symbolic of the way we're
  160. 5:46treated by the press the way that you
  161. 5:48just laughed at me is actually symbolic
  162. 5:50of the way very representative the way
  163. 5:51we're treated by the Press I'll just
  164. 5:53ignore it I'm bigger than that I'm a
  165. 5:54kind and gracious person but let me tell
  166. 5:56you something else I'm really glad that
  167. 5:58NBC News and and Chuck Todd all of a
  168. 6:00sudden are so thrilled to cover crowd
  169. 6:02control because we were mocked daily for
  170. 6:05talking about the significance of our
  171. 6:07historic rallies during the campaign
  172. 6:10Donald Trump brought in historic crowds
  173. 6:12to Michigan to Wisconsin to Pennsylvania
  174. 6:14to Florida to North Carolina and on
  175. 6:16great days we were ignored and on most
  176. 6:19days we were mocked and those crowds did
  177. 6:21matter because he built a movement the
  178. 6:23people haven't seen But what I don't
  179. 6:26understand is why he's litigating this
  180. 6:28why stand in front of a memorial at the
  181. 6:31CIA what El he CIA you don't want to
  182. 6:35talk about the rest of this what he said
  183. 6:36at the CIA first of all his very
  184. 6:38Presence at the CIA sent a great message
  185. 6:41to our men and women our brave men and
  186. 6:43women in the intelligence Community he
  187. 6:45went to the CIA yesterday he thought he
  188. 6:46was going to witness the swearing IM of
  189. 6:49his CIA director Mike Pompeo but you
  190. 6:51know why that didn't happen Chuck
  191. 6:52because the United State Senate won't
  192. 6:54confirm Mike Pompeo as CIA director ask
  193. 6:57Senator Schumer why that is going be a
  194. 6:58question me ask him why ask him why
  195. 7:02Donald Trump as president has nominated
  196. 7:0421 of the 21 cabinet positions only to
  197. 7:07have two grand total of two confirmed
  198. 7:10while he takes office so the Democratic
  199. 7:12Senate wants to hold up treasury
  200. 7:14Commerce energy education the list goes
  201. 7:17on we should have the respect and
  202. 7:19deference of having a cabinet seated so
  203. 7:21this peaceful transition of power occurs
  204. 7:24properly but he went to the CIA because
  205. 7:27lies have been told about his
  206. 7:29relationship and his respect for the
  207. 7:31intelligence community so he went right
  208. 7:33there we had over a thousand requests to
  209. 7:35attend we can only accommodate three or
  210. 7:37you can ask you lience community can I
  211. 7:40ask you to tell me what lies U about the
  212. 7:42intelligence Community um were uttered
  213. 7:44about uh uh president Trump's
  214. 7:47relationship with the intelligence
  215. 7:48community that he doesn't respect them
  216. 7:50do you think what do you think what
  217. 7:51outgoing CIA director said yesterday in
  218. 7:53a statement using the vocabulary the
  219. 7:56language he used about our new president
  220. 7:57United States somehow quote improves our
  221. 8:00relationship with the intelligence
  222. 8:01Community it is irresponsible it is
  223. 8:03reprehensible it is totally unne let ask
  224. 8:06you this is this
  225. 8:08responsible uh he called it was
  226. 8:10disgraceful intelligence agencies
  227. 8:12allowed any information so false and
  228. 8:13fake out disgrace say that something
  229. 8:15Nazi Germany would have done and did so
  230. 8:18disgrace that was a uh on January 11th
  231. 8:21was it right uh to compare the
  232. 8:24intelligence Community with Nazi Germany
  233. 8:26what's not right Chuck is that the day
  234. 8:28before you had people releasing a
  235. 8:31dossier full of junk and lies and fake
  236. 8:34news and why do they release the dossier
  237. 8:37because because people knew that Russian
  238. 8:39hacking was fading from you as an
  239. 8:41election had been totally dismissed as
  240. 8:43having any credibility or Nexus towards
  241. 8:45our election results Hillary Clinton
  242. 8:47lost that election fairly and squarely
  243. 8:49basically running on the same messages
  244. 8:51we heard here yesterday in Washington DC
  245. 8:52in elbur I heard like a repeat it was
  246. 8:55this awful sequel as awful as the
  247. 8:57original we just litigated all this in
  248. 8:59the campaign and they came to Washington
  249. 9:01and said the same thing Donald Trump
  250. 9:03president Trump is very concerned about
  251. 9:05the leaks that have occurred and a very
  252. 9:07concerned that people would would really
  253. 9:09denigrate the way the respect that he
  254. 9:11has for men and women of the
  255. 9:12intelligence commune why don't you go
  256. 9:13back to his statement on Friday January
  257. 9:166th after he had an intelligence
  258. 9:17briefing that he and vice president
  259. 9:19Pence won't talk about because it's top
  260. 9:21secret and they won't leak about it
  261. 9:23because you're not supposed to they're
  262. 9:25protecting our intelligence and they're
  263. 9:27protecting the security of people like
  264. 9:28you and me our children Chuck by not by
  265. 9:30not leaking but what he said that day on
  266. 9:33January 6 put that statement up for your
  267. 9:34viewers if you want to do us an honest
  268. 9:36service he said in the beginning of the
  269. 9:38statement I respect the service of our
  270. 9:41great men and women in the intelligence
  271. 9:42community and then the last part of the
  272. 9:45statement was that he looks forward to
  273. 9:47directing his own intelligence team
  274. 9:49within 90 days of becoming the president
  275. 9:51of the United States to give us a better
  276. 9:53view of cyber security and to put better
  277. 9:56better security measures in place it'd
  278. 9:58be nice if he had a CIA director he
  279. 10:00doesn't today because the Democrats are
  280. 10:02holding up his CIA director I want to go
  281. 10:04back um to a question that you continue
  282. 10:06to reflect why was it necessary to send
  283. 10:09out the press secretary on his first day
  284. 10:10in office to utter approvable falsehood
  285. 10:13that now calls into question everything
  286. 10:15the press secretary state will say from
  287. 10:18here on out it will for many Americans
  288. 10:22no it doesn't you want them to hear that
  289. 10:23you want them to hear that I'm not
  290. 10:24answering your questions which I'm doing
  291. 10:26you want them to hear that they can't
  292. 10:28trust our press secretary I think that
  293. 10:29is a very dangerous statement to what
  294. 10:31was the motive to have this ridiculous
  295. 10:34litigation of crowd size and now you're
  296. 10:36casting it and your job is not to give
  297. 10:38your opinion shock respectfully your job
  298. 10:40is not to call things ridiculous that
  299. 10:42are said by our press secretary and our
  300. 10:43president that's not your job you're
  301. 10:44supposed to be a news person you're not
  302. 10:46an opinion col you please answer the
  303. 10:48question why did he do this you have not
  304. 10:50answered it answer this way I'll answer
  305. 10:53it this way think about what you just
  306. 10:55said to your viewers that's why we feel
  307. 10:57compelled to go out and clear the
  308. 10:59and put alter tactic it's a political
  309. 11:02tactic to come up with alternative facts
  310. 11:04and try to set up the press as your
  311. 11:05enemy no I didn't say that at all and
  312. 11:08that's not why I'm here in this building
  313. 11:10I'm here because of all the provable
  314. 11:12quantifiable facts because of the
  315. 11:14devastation and destruction in our
  316. 11:16schools with our health care in our
  317. 11:19economy with our small business owners
  318. 11:22and yes certainly uh with with terrorism
  319. 11:26uh infrastructure this guy's going to do
  320. 11:27so much in the first week he's going to
  321. 11:28talk to prime minister Benjamin nahu
  322. 11:31today about the Middle East about Iran
  323. 11:33he's going to end the week receiving
  324. 11:36prime minister Teresa may from the UK
  325. 11:38here his first foreign leader to be
  326. 11:40received here they're going to help
  327. 11:41renegotiate us UK trade but you want to
  328. 11:44talk about things IM media doesn't want
  329. 11:45to cover you totally missed brexit and
  330. 11:47Teresa may you totally missed Trump's
  331. 11:49campaign you want to talk about provable
  332. 11:51facts you've missed it all along America
  333. 11:53doesn't really I mean look you've got a
  334. 11:5614% approval rating in the media that
  335. 11:58you've earned you you want to you want
  336. 11:59to push back on us and yet you have a
  337. 12:0214% is an answer to a simple question
  338. 12:05you never an you never answered why or
  339. 12:08the motivation of what was necessary
  340. 12:10about doing that yesterday tell me why
  341. 12:11you just referred to us as ridiculous
  342. 12:13tell me why we were lied about the
  343. 12:15debate is ridiculous and I did not say
  344. 12:17anything about ml you're a deflect look
  345. 12:20you're deflecting in order toid NBC
  346. 12:23covered that false report NBC covered
  347. 12:25that false report as to 3,000 other
  348. 12:28articles that are still up online Chuck
  349. 12:30you can't have a press coming into the
  350. 12:32Oval Office on day one of the
  351. 12:34administration we welcome them in to to
  352. 12:36to be open and gracious and to have a
  353. 12:39great relationship with the Press they
  354. 12:40came in and the Press Pooler wrote a
  355. 12:42false article about the removal of the
  356. 12:44bust of Martin Luther King the Jr days
  357. 12:47after days after president Trump met
  358. 12:49with Martin Luther King III Martin
  359. 12:51Luther King Jr's son in New York City
  360. 12:54had a very constructive open
  361. 12:55conversation where Martin Luther King
  362. 12:57Jr's son said we have to unify and help
  363. 13:00heal the country together and boom any
  364. 13:02snarky attempt to try to undercut this
  365. 13:05president in the Oval Office while he's
  366. 13:07doing the business of the country you
  367. 13:08just I mean we can't have this kind of
  368. 13:10relationship I completely agree but I I
  369. 13:13I'm sitting here trying to answer basic
  370. 13:15questions and you're trying to attack me
  371. 13:17with some I'm not attacking you Twitter
  372. 13:20feed with some weird Twitter feed that
  373. 13:22you guys are obsessed with look I'm
  374. 13:23going to have to leave it there you have
  375. 13:24another inter
