Kelly Ripa Addresses Not Being Told About Michael Strahan's Departure — Transcript

2. 0:02I first want to honestly, sincerely
3. 0:05thank you for welcoming me back to the
4. 0:07show.
5. 0:09Kelly Ripa returns to live after last
6. 0:12week's boycott of the show and took
7. 0:14direct aim at her network bosses
8. 0:17and most importantly respect in the
9. 0:20workplace.
10. 0:22[Applause]
11. 0:24Kelly did not look happy as she left her
12. 0:26Upper East Side townhouse this morning
13. 0:28on her way to work. You could see she's
14. 0:30carrying her friend Anderson Cooper's
15. 0:32new book about surviving loss. The
16. 0:34rainbow comes and goes. ABC executives
17. 0:37were worried that Kelly would have an
18. 0:39onair meltdown like Anne Curry did when
19. 0:42she left the Today Show in 2012.
20. 0:45And for all of you who saw me as a
21. 0:47groundbreaker,
22. 0:49I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over
23. 0:51the finish line, but man, I did try.
24. 0:54I'm going to be completely honest. I'm
25. 0:55fairly certain that there are trained
26. 0:57professional snipers with tranquilizer
27. 1:00darts in case I drift too far off
28. 1:02message.
29. 1:03Kelly fought back tears and explained
30. 1:05why she needed to take a break after not
31. 1:07being told that co-host Michael Strahan
32. 1:10was leaving the show for a full-time gig
33. 1:12at Good Morning America. So what
34. 1:14transpired though over the course of a
35. 1:16few days has been um extraordinary in
36. 1:20the sense that it started a much greater
37. 1:22conversation about communication and
38. 1:26consideration
39. 1:28and most importantly respect in the
40. 1:31workplace.
41. 1:34and she did find the words to
42. 1:36congratulate her co-host even as Strahan
43. 1:39stayed off to one side, leaving Kelly
44. 1:42her moment in the spotlight. There have
45. 1:44been rumors the two do not get along.
46. 1:46I am thrilled for Michael. I am thrilled
47. 1:49for you. Um, this is an tremendous
48. 1:52opportunity and I couldn't be and we
49. 1:55couldn't be prouder of you and
50. 1:56everything we accomplished together.
51. 1:59Body language expert Tanya Ryman says
52. 2:02that Kelly and Michael seemed nervous
53. 2:04and uncomfortable.
54. 2:05What we did notice with Kelly is that
55. 2:07she's really trying hard to look
56. 2:08comfortable. They both are, but you
57. 2:10can't look comfortable if you're really
58. 2:12feeling the tension. And when she was
59. 2:14talking about how she's dedicated 26
60. 2:16years of her life to this show and this
61. 2:17network, it's a family. You see, she's
62. 2:19doing like fist pounding. And you can
63. 2:21see there's real anger and frustration
64. 2:22there.
65. 2:23Michael Strahan thanked his co-host when
66. 2:25he got the chance to talk. I love you
67. 2:28and I am so happy you're here because
68. 2:30you brought me here with Gelman and this
69. 2:33show has it's it's has been transforming
70. 2:36for me and and I know this show lives on
71. 2:39because you are the queen of morning
72. 2:40television and it will continue today.
73. 2:43Kelly Ripple reportedly refused to take
74. 2:45any calls from Michael Strahan. It was
75. 2:47only over the weekend the two co-host
76. 2:49began communicating via text. Kelly
77. 2:52makes a reported $20 million a year, and
78. 2:55she definitely sees the humor in being
79. 2:57tagged a primadana for her two-day walk
80. 3:00out.
81. 3:01Incidentally, I just want to say one
82. 3:03thing. My dad, who was a bus driver for
83. 3:0630 years, thinks we're all crazy.
