Karen Called Wildlife Officers to Arrest Me for Fishing — They Shook My Hand Instead — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00My name is Nolan Briggs. Last Saturday,
- 0:03a woman screamed, "Arrest him now!" at
- 0:06two wildlife officers, pointing at me
- 0:08like I was a criminal. I was holding a
- 0:10fishing rod. The officers walked
- 0:13straight past her, looked at me, and
- 0:15shook my hand. Alder Lake sits in the
- 0:17mountains. It is the most peaceful place
- 0:20I know. My father taught me to fish on
- 0:22its eastern shore when I was seven. For
- 0:25almost 40 years, that wooden dock has
- 0:27been my church.
- 0:29That morning, something was wrong. A
- 0:32brand new sign stood by the shore,
- 0:34wooden, freshly painted, "Fishing
- 0:36restricted." The wood still smelled of
- 0:39wet paint, no state seal, no law number,
- 0:43and I had a feeling that sign was not
- 0:45meant for fish.
- 0:46I did not argue with the sign. I opened
- 0:49my tackle box and checked my license.
- 0:51Valid, current, stamped for this exact
- 0:54lake. I tied on a lure, cast my line,
- 0:58and let the water settle my mind. 10
- 1:00minutes later, I heard heels clicking on
- 1:02the dock. She wore a maroon blazer on a
- 1:05lakeshore at 7:00 a.m. sharp eyes, pearl
- 1:08earrings, and a smile of someone who
- 1:10enjoys ruining mornings. "Sir," she
- 1:13said, "Did you not read the sign?" I
- 1:16said, "I read it. Did you read the law?"
- 1:19She laughed. "I am Sandra Wickham,
- 1:21president of Pine Crest Lakeside
- 1:23Estates. This lake belongs to our
- 1:25community." I looked at the water, then
- 1:28at her. "Ma'am, lakes in this state
- 1:31belong to the public." Her smile
- 1:33vanished like it had never existed. "You
- 1:35have exactly 1 minute to pack up," she
- 1:38said, "or I call the wildlife officers."
- 1:41I gently reeled in my line. "Please do.
- 1:44I would love to meet them." She did not
- 1:47understand why I smiled, but she was
- 1:49about to.
- 1:50She walked 10 steps away and made the
- 1:52call. Her voice was loud on purpose. "A
- 1:56dangerous poacher is destroying our
- 1:57protected lake. Arrest him." I heard
- 2:01every word and I noticed something odd.
- 2:03She never once said the word license.
- 2:06Then came the strangest quiet. The lake
- 2:09went still, even the birds stopped.
- 2:12Sandra checked her watch again and again
- 2:14and I realized she was not impatient.
- 2:16She was nervous. Why would an HOA
- 2:19president be nervous about me?
- 2:21A few neighbors began to gather. Harold
- 2:24Pike, our treasurer,
- 2:26carried a stack of papers like a shield.
- 2:28Old Linda Marsh watched from her porch,
- 2:30shaking her head. Linda caught my eye
- 2:32and mouthed three words, "Be careful,
- 2:35Nolan."
- 2:36Then I heard gravel crunching. A dark
- 2:39green truck rolled down the road with a
- 2:41state seal on its door. Sandra's face
- 2:44lit up with joy. "Finally!" she shouted.
- 2:47"Justice is here."
- 2:48I picked up my rod, not to run, just to
- 2:51be ready.
- 2:53Two officers stepped out. A man with a
- 2:55clipboard, Warden Ray Sutter. A blond
- 2:58woman beside him, Officer Megan Doyle.
- 3:01Sandra rushed to them. "That man has
- 3:03been fishing illegally for weeks!" she
- 3:06shouted. Warden Sutter slowly turned his
- 3:08head toward me and froze.
- 3:11"Arrest him now!" Sandra screamed,
- 3:14pointing her finger at my face. He
- 3:16ignored my sign.
- 3:18Officer Doyle looked at me, then at the
- 3:20sign, then at the clipboard. Her
- 3:23expression changed. She whispered
- 3:25something to Sutter. He nodded slowly.
- 3:28Warden Sutter walked toward me. Every
- 3:31step felt heavy. "Sir," he said quietly,
- 3:34"may I see your fishing license?" I
- 3:37handed it over. He looked at it for a
- 3:39long moment. Then he looked at my face
- 3:41again. His eyes widened.
- 3:44Warden Sutter smiled. Then he stretched
- 3:46out his hand. "Dr. Briggs, it is an
- 3:50honor."
- 3:51I shook it. Behind me,
- 3:53I heard a sound I will never forget. It
- 3:55was a sound of Sandra Whitcomb's whole
- 3:57world cracking.
- 3:59"Doctor?" Sandra stammered. "Doctor
- 4:01what?"
- 4:03Officer Doyle answered calmly, "D R
- 4:06Nolan Briggs is the lead fisheries
- 4:08biologist for the State Department of
- 4:09Natural Resources. He has been
- 4:11protecting this lake for 11 years."
- 4:14Nobody on that shore moved. Here's what
- 4:17Sandra did not know. I had not come that
- 4:20morning to fish. I came because of a
- 4:22report. Dead trout were washing up on
- 4:25the north shore and someone had hidden
- 4:27the water test results. Sandra's face
- 4:30went pale. She knew exactly what I
- 4:32meant.
- 4:33"This is ridiculous."
- 4:35Sandra snapped backing away. "I have
- 4:38meetings. I am leaving."
- 4:40Warden Sutter raised one hand. "Ma'am,
- 4:43please stay. We have questions about a
- 4:46sign and about a lot of money."
- 4:49She stopped and for the first time she
- 4:51looked afraid.
- 4:53Officer Doyle walked to the fishing
- 4:55restricted sign and shook it. It rattled
- 4:58loosely. No permit number. No state
- 5:01stamp. "This sign is illegal." she said.
- 5:04"Someone put it here to scare people
- 5:05away." Everyone turned to look at
- 5:08Sandra.
- 5:09Doctor Priya Raman, the state water
- 5:11scientist, arrived with a sealed folder.
- 5:14"We found a bank account." she said.
- 5:17"Pine Crest residents were paying $400 a
- 5:19year for a private lake permit. A permit
- 5:22that does not exist." Harold Pike
- 5:25dropped his papers.
- 5:26Harold looked at Sandra trembling. "You
- 5:29told me it was legal." he whispered.
- 5:32"You said the state approved it."
- 5:34Sandra said nothing and then Linda Marsh
- 5:37walked down from her porch holding an
- 5:39envelope of her own.
- 5:41"I kept every receipt." Linda said
- 5:43softly. "11 years of fees and 3 months
- 5:47ago I saw a truck dumping something at
- 5:49night near the north shore." Doctor
- 5:52Raman's eyes sharpened. "Dumping what?"
- 5:55Linda pointed straight at Sandra's
- 5:57husband's landscaping company logo.
- 5:59Doctor Raman knelt and tested the water.
- 6:02"Fertilizer runoff." she said. "And
- 6:05something much worse.
- 6:06The North Shore had been poisoned to
- 6:08hide an illegal drainage pipe from the
- 6:10HOA's golf course. The dead trout were
- 6:13not an accident. They were the evidence.
- 6:16Sandra exploded. "You cannot prove any
- 6:19of this. I have lawyers. I will sue
- 6:22every one of you."
- 6:23Warden Sutter did not even blink. He
- 6:26turned to Officer Doyle. "Doyle, read
- 6:29her the notice."
- 6:30And Officer Doyle pulled out a paper.
- 6:33"Sandra Wickham,"
- 6:35Officer Doyle read, "You are hereby
- 6:37served with a state notice for illegal
- 6:39collection of access fees, unauthorized
- 6:42signage on public water, and
- 6:43environmental violations under
- 6:45investigation."
- 6:46Sandra's hand began to shake. The paper
- 6:49trembled in the wind.
- 6:51The neighbors who feared her for years
- 6:53began to speak. "She fined me for my
- 6:55mailbox," one said. "She threatened to
- 6:58foreclose on mine," said another. Sandra
- 7:01turned in circles,
- 7:03searching for one friendly face. She
- 7:05found none.
- 7:07Then Warden Sutter turned to me. "Dr.
- 7:10Briggs, one more thing. The order you
- 7:12requested has been approved." Sandra
- 7:14whispered, "What order?"
- 7:17I answered quietly,
- 7:19"The one that gives this lake back to
- 7:20the public, forever."
- 7:23Warden Sutter handed me a crowbar. I
- 7:25walked to that fake sign, the one that
- 7:27had been meant to chase honest people
- 7:29away, and pulled it from the ground.
- 7:31Neighbors began to clap. Even Harold
- 7:34clapped with tears in his eyes.
- 7:36Two weeks later, the state froze the
- 7:38HOA's accounts. Sandra resigned in
- 7:41disgrace,
- 7:42and the stolen fees were returned to
- 7:44every family. Her husband's company paid
- 7:46the largest environmental fine in the
- 7:49county's history, and the North Shore
- 7:51began to heal. Last Saturday, I stood on
- 7:54that old dock again, with trout
- 7:56returning to the clear water. A little
- 7:58girl fished beside me for the very first
- 8:00time, just like I once did with my
- 8:02father. Some people think power is a
- 8:04sign, and a loud voice, but real power
- 8:08is truth, patience, and the courage to
- 8:10stay calm. If you enjoyed the story,
