- 0:08>> Adventure's calling, treasure awaits.
- 0:10Join us on a journey, let's open the
- 0:12gates. Welcome to the pod where the
- 0:15treasure is found. X marks the pod,
- 0:17LET'S GATHER AROUND.
- 0:22>> [music]
- 0:26>> HEY, welcome to X marks the pod, the
- 0:28podcast for treasure hunters by treasure
- 0:30hunters. I'm here, boots on the ground
- 0:31with Jaws Megan and a very special guest
- 0:34this week. We have one of the stars of
- 0:36Netflix Golden Greed and the creator of
- 0:39Beyond the Map's Edge treasure hunt, the
- 0:41one, the only Justin M. J Money Posey.
- 0:46Welcome to X marks the pod, J Money.
- 0:47Thanks for being here today.
- 0:49J Money, that's a first.
- 0:51>> [laughter]
- 0:51>> Is that Is that good?
- 0:53Happy to be here.
- 0:55Well, we appreciate it. So, uh Um let's
- 0:58get We're just going to jump right into
- 1:00it. We were very excited to have you
- 1:01here. We have a lot of questions that
- 1:03were we've curated through the
- 1:04community. We've sent a lot of flags up
- 1:06like, "Hey, we're going to have Justin
- 1:07on, tell us what you think." So, we have
- 1:09a lot of good stuff here hopefully. Um
- 1:12that we want to get going. So, we're
- 1:13just going to roll right into it. The
- 1:14the the structure today, we're going to
- 1:16do about five questions each, kind of a
- 1:18round robin going through. And then at
- 1:20the end, if we have some time there, we
- 1:21want to do some rapid fire, kind of a
- 1:24yes, no. Hopefully, you'll answer some
- 1:25questions, maybe not. Um you'll you'll
- 1:28have that option to just go ahead and
- 1:29plead no harm, no foul. Or if it's
- 1:31something you want to address at Secret
- 1:32Summit, then maybe we'll we'll dive into
- 1:35or we'll we'll leave that for for that
- 1:37for Tucson. So, all right, here we go.
- 1:40Now that BTME is coming up on 1 year,
- 1:42what has surprised you most about how
- 1:44the hunt has unfolded?
- 1:48Oh golly.
- 1:49Uh I think more than anything just
- 1:51how much it's grown. I I really had it
- 1:54in my mind that it was going to be this
- 1:55niche thing. I mean, when the
- 1:57documentary first started to air, or
- 1:59rather when it was first being filmed, I
- 2:01don't even think there was a buyer. I
- 2:03never imagined it would be on something
- 2:04like
- 2:05uh Netflix.
- 2:08And even when it was on Netflix, I just
- 2:09didn't think it was going to be as
- 2:11popular as it became. So, I think more
- 2:13than anything it's just the the growth
- 2:14in the community and and you certainly
- 2:16see all these uh for lack of a better
- 2:19term subcommunities that spring up uh
- 2:22that all kind of have their own uh
- 2:23unique style and and uh bring their own
- 2:26fun to the mix. So, it's been it's been
- 2:28a lot of uh a lot of interesting things
- 2:30to witness along the way.
- 2:32Very good. Very good. Megan?
- 2:34If you uh were a seeker for your
- 2:38treasure, what question would you ask
- 2:40yourself as a hunter?
- 2:43Oh gosh.
- 2:44Um
- 2:45knowing what I know?
- 2:47Mm, knowing what we know.
- 2:49>> [laughter]
- 2:52>> Uh I think that'd probably be a
- 2:54a good question for Secret Summit.
- 2:57Fair enough.
- 3:00So, we have the map on the website.
- 3:03If you had to rate it on a scale of 1 to
- 3:0510, how important it is to have that map
- 3:08to find the treasure, what would you
- 3:10rate it?
- 3:13Uh I'd have to put some real thought
- 3:15into like a numerical rating, but I I
- 3:17would say it's it's it's generally
- 3:19useful uh for a couple of different
- 3:21reasons.
- 3:24You want to talk about those reasons?
- 3:26>> [laughter]
- 3:27>> Maybe another time. Okay, fair enough.
- 3:29Fair enough.
- 3:30Okay, um we love how much you're engaged
- 3:32with the community, but do you feel
- 3:34sometimes that your level of interaction
- 3:36with the community is unintentionally
- 3:37made BTME harder or more confusing?
- 3:42Uh boy.
- 3:45Yeah, I mean, there are certainly two
- 3:47kind of
- 3:48opposite ends of the spectrum in terms
- 3:49of engagement. There's zero engagement
- 3:51or maybe more like I've done.
- 3:55And you know, my intent all along is to
- 3:57provide additional clarity, but
- 4:00uh I think the biggest risk are are
- 4:01situations where I don't have time to
- 4:05thoughtfully sit down and craft a
- 4:07response preferably in writing.
- 4:10And I think in those situations
- 4:11especially, there's always the
- 4:12opportunity that
- 4:15I even though the intent is to provide
- 4:16clarity, I probably could provide
- 4:19uh the opposite and kind of muddy the
- 4:20waters. Um you know, I think about over
- 4:23the course of the year, coming up on a
- 4:25year,
- 4:26all all the different questions that
- 4:27have been asked in the forums and so
- 4:29forth and
- 4:30you know, I'd be hard-pressed to
- 4:33to think of something where
- 4:36you know, I provided inaccurate
- 4:37information. I think it it's all been
- 4:39been accurate, uh even the off-the-cuff
- 4:41stuff.
- 4:42Um but there's likely been at least a
- 4:44few times where
- 4:46I probably would have chosen a different
- 4:50wording or semantics if I were to have
- 4:52spent more time crafting a real answer
- 4:54as opposed to something that was off the
- 4:56cuff, sort of like we're doing here. So,
- 4:58that's the risky take by indulging in
- 5:01in listening to me in and the uh various
- 5:04um forums. Yeah. Okay. Let me let me
- 5:07follow up on that real quick. Is there
- 5:08anything that you would want to clarify
- 5:10from other other interviews or Q&A's or
- 5:13take back, perhaps?
- 5:15>> [sighs]
- 5:16>> No, I don't I don't I don't
- 5:18think so. And I think even
- 5:22I think even
- 5:23just the exercise of trying to clarify
- 5:25further might make things worse.
- 5:28I'm not I mean, I don't know if worse is
- 5:29the right word, but make it more
- 5:30ambiguous. So, I'm actually pretty
- 5:33pretty happy with where things stand
- 5:35there. So, status quo. Okay, fair
- 5:37enough.
- 5:39Which part of your personality
- 5:40influenced the poem the most? The part
- 5:43of you who is an engineer or the part of
- 5:45you who's an enthusiastic uh
- 5:48explorer?
- 5:51Uh I'd say the part of me
- 5:54that
- 5:57embraces childlike wonder the most.
- 6:03So,
- 6:04there's a lot of talk about the
- 6:05checkpoints, so I've got a couple
- 6:07questions about that for you tonight.
- 6:09Uh is it something that we are going to
- 6:11physically see and know that it's the
- 6:13checkpoint when we get there?
- 6:16Uh that's a good Secret Summit question.
- 6:19>> [laughter]
- 6:21>> Sorry.
- 6:22No, we we kind of knew that was a risk
- 6:24that we were taking today by by by
- 6:26bumping up so close to Secret Summit.
- 6:27So, we we totally understand. We're
- 6:28we're and we're we're good. No no hard
- 6:30feelings, J Money. You're good with us.
- 6:32So,
- 6:34Let's talk about modern tools. You know,
- 6:36obviously we want this to be a more
- 6:38AI-proof boots on the ground, but do you
- 6:40feel like tools such as Google Earth,
- 6:42AI, um etc. are helping people with the
- 6:46hunt or actually leading further away
- 6:48from your intended path?
- 6:51I think it's a bit of both. You know,
- 6:52I've certainly seen cases where
- 6:55I mean, using
- 6:57some of the what we consider basic
- 6:59technology these days like Google Maps
- 7:01can be beneficial, but also
- 7:03uh
- 7:04you know, I think
- 7:05some people might have taken that to an
- 7:07extreme to the point where you see
- 7:09patterns where there are none.
- 7:11Uh or I
- 7:13I mean, I can think of kind of an
- 7:14extreme example where uh a few people or
- 7:17more than a few people have actually
- 7:19sent me emails showing, you know, very
- 7:21very specific um
- 7:24foliage
- 7:26uh shapes that that are
- 7:28believed to be clues. I mean, clearly
- 7:31foliage is going to change over the
- 7:33course of the year uh and you know,
- 7:35heaven forbid this goes on for more than
- 7:37you know, years. Uh th those are the
- 7:40types of things that I think are are
- 7:41subject to change. So, I would just
- 7:43caution
- 7:44uh not to have an over-reliance on that
- 7:45stuff or to look so deeply that you're
- 7:48you're seeing uh patterns in the tea
- 7:50leaves.
- 7:51>> [laughter]
- 7:53>> Can I I want I want to ask you why you
- 7:54said heaven forbid this go on for for
- 7:56years?
- 7:58>> [laughter]
- 7:59>> Well, I I you know, I I've I've had it
- 8:01in my mind since this began that um
- 8:05it would be kind of a an accelerated
- 8:09version of what
- 8:11Forrest Fenn had done in the sense that
- 8:13he
- 8:14you know, his treasure hunt grew
- 8:15organically over the course of many
- 8:17years. And you know, if you think about
- 8:19like even the first five years of the
- 8:21treasure hunt, it wasn't terribly
- 8:23popular. It really started to gain
- 8:25momentum in the latter part.
- 8:27And and this is kind of like a a
- 8:30treasure hunt on steroids in the sense
- 8:31that Netflix has catapulted it into
- 8:33something where people many people have
- 8:36dove in headfirst on day one.
- 8:38And so, it's I you know, in terms of
- 8:40comparison, if I were to
- 8:42to force it, you know, I'd say that
- 8:45today is sort of like
- 8:47year nine of Fenn hunt.
- 8:50And so, uh
- 8:53you know, I can imagine the perspective
- 8:55that that treasure hunters might be
- 8:57being like that deep into it from day
- 8:59one and us coming up on the year mark.
- 9:01So,
- 9:02you know, yeah
- 9:03as I think many people have said,
- 9:05there's a fine line between, you know,
- 9:06obsession and and something that may or
- 9:09may not be more healthy.
- 9:11>> [snorts]
- 9:11>> So, I think it's just around um
- 9:14you know, how long does this go on
- 9:16before, you know, it becomes something
- 9:18that um has the potential to
- 9:21um
- 9:22well, cause more people a deeper
- 9:25obsession. I like to think that it's a a
- 9:27great hobby for people and I think it is
- 9:29for the vast majority of everybody.
- 9:32Um I think that's probably the only
- 9:33lingering worry that I have is that
- 9:34maybe over time
- 9:36uh certainly for some personality types,
- 9:38it could become something more.
- 9:40Uh and nobody I I don't think anybody
- 9:42wants that that unhealthiness. So,
- 9:44that's the only thing that gives me
- 9:46reservation about it lasting too long.
- 9:49It makes sense. And Megan, he's talking
- 9:50about you. People
- 9:51>> He probably is.
- 9:52>> [laughter]
- 9:53>> I do not know.
- 9:55Just to follow up.
- 9:56Just a follow-up question about that.
- 9:58You said it feels like you're going into
- 10:00like year nine of the Forrest Fenn hunt
- 10:02on year one. Does that mean that
- 10:05somebody's getting close to finding this
- 10:06treasure?
- 10:11You know, I I think it's I mean if there
- 10:14there have been
- 10:16more than at least a few people that
- 10:19have been
- 10:21fairly close to finding the treasure.
- 10:24And so
- 10:25um
- 10:28you know, it's hard to quantify. There's
- 10:30a lot of different sources out there,
- 10:32but um yeah, I think that's fair to say.
- 10:37With the Forrest Fenn treasure, he said
- 10:40he regretted putting the bracelet in the
- 10:42box. Is there any part of your treasure
- 10:45that you regret putting in that you
- 10:47wished you had for yourself? And if not
- 10:49regret, just something you wish that you
- 10:52had for yourself, a favorite?
- 10:56Um I put everything each item into the
- 10:59treasure container intentionally.
- 11:01And I did it with a lot of thought. So
- 11:05there's nothing that I regret
- 11:07putting in there, but there are things
- 11:10that I put in there that have a very a
- 11:12deep meaning to me.
- 11:14Uh and so, you know, in a way it felt
- 11:16like
- 11:17um
- 11:19kind of like passing on a little piece
- 11:21of what I felt was important to
- 11:24whoever finds this. And it's
- 11:26you know, I mean
- 11:28those types of things are most of them
- 11:30are not of of great value. It's more of
- 11:33uh significance than anything else. But
- 11:35no, I don't regret putting them in
- 11:37there.
- 11:40>> [clears throat]
- 11:40>> All right, I've got another checkpoint
- 11:42question. Hopefully it's one that you
- 11:44can answer and not not wait for Seeker
- 11:46Summit.
- 11:47>> [laughter]
- 11:48>> Um did you place the checkpoint there
- 11:50yourself or was it something that was
- 11:52already there?
- 11:56Oh, uh that's a potential for Seeker
- 11:58Summit, but
- 12:00>> [laughter]
- 12:00>> not until then.
- 12:01And then just a little follow up to
- 12:03that. It Are you aware of anyone that
- 12:05has been to the checkpoint?
- 12:17I'm I'm at least aware of people that
- 12:19have been close.
- 12:21Okay.
- 12:22Okay.
- 12:24See, we we've had this conversation
- 12:25about what the checkpoint could be. And
- 12:27and I envisioned that you you had made
- 12:28some billboards up with you and Tucker,
- 12:30maybe like a a faux Humane Society
- 12:33advertisement or something like that. So
- 12:35we're looking for something in there
- 12:36with your face on it is what we're we're
- 12:38looking for. So
- 12:39cuz that's when I will absolutely have
- 12:41zero doubt if I see your face out there
- 12:42somewhere on a billboard or something,
- 12:44I'll have zero doubt. So that's about
- 12:45the only way I think I'll have zero
- 12:47doubt.
- 12:47>> option. It's an option.
- 12:50We Hey, we got to think about it.
- 12:51>> this interview there's going to be like
- 12:53a wall with J Money was here spray
- 12:55painted on it.
- 12:56>> [laughter]
- 12:58>> With the J Money tags. I know, exactly,
- 13:00exactly.
- 13:02Um Justin, do you feel like the the
- 13:03community is overcomplicating
- 13:06the the the poem or or missing something
- 13:08very simple
- 13:10um in the process?
- 13:13I think that's the
- 13:15the natural inclination for any puzzle
- 13:17where you don't understand the solution.
- 13:20I mean, you look at all different types
- 13:22of puzzles, both mental and physical.
- 13:25And you know, if you know the answer, it
- 13:28seems so simple. And then you look uh
- 13:31and somebody else looks at it and they
- 13:32try many different things that you never
- 13:34even thought to try
- 13:36uh that are just vastly beyond what it
- 13:38was what it was meant to be. Um
- 13:42So yeah, I mean, there's certainly
- 13:43people out there that have
- 13:45overcomplicate many things.
- 13:47Uh and then there are other aspects that
- 13:49I'm just slightly surprised at in terms
- 13:52of
- 13:53uh how how simplistic people have taken
- 13:55it, you know, at at surface value. So I
- 13:58think it's probably a little bit of
- 13:59both, but certainly weighted toward many
- 14:01people that have taken things uh too
- 14:03deep or or looked uh looked too far.
- 14:06Okay. Conversely, have you heard anybody
- 14:08Have you looked at any solves and went,
- 14:09"Wow, I haven't really thought about
- 14:10that. That would be an interesting fit.
- 14:12That that that could really that could
- 14:14play well in this."
- 14:15Actually, yes. There have been several
- 14:19uh
- 14:20emails that I've received where
- 14:23uh it was not at all what I intended, uh
- 14:26but reading through it, it's like, "Wow,
- 14:28that's actually
- 14:30quite poetic or quite fitting." And
- 14:33I wish I had thought of that, you know.
- 14:35>> [laughter]
- 14:36>> Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:38Well, thank you. Thanks for reading my
- 14:39emails. Um
- 14:40>> [laughter]
- 14:43>> I think that's what Chris didn't say is
- 14:44he Chris was one of the ones that went
- 14:47like way over analyzing it is what he
- 14:48didn't say.
- 14:51>> [laughter]
- 14:53>> We we got this question a couple of
- 14:55times, so it must be important to quite
- 14:58a few people. Um
- 15:00Did you intentionally place small
- 15:02trinkets or any objects to help build
- 15:04confidence so people knew that they were
- 15:06on the right path?
- 15:10Um
- 15:17I mean, there is something along the way
- 15:19that will will help significantly.
- 15:23Is are you Is that the checkpoint?
- 15:26I have not specified. Interesting. You
- 15:29You thought a long time about that one.
- 15:31That one really
- 15:32>> [laughter]
- 15:33>> I I
- 15:33>> next question is would you like to
- 15:35specify?
- 15:36>> [laughter]
- 15:37>> Not at this time.
- 15:40Well, very good. That's interesting.
- 15:41Okay, and trinkets off the be looking
- 15:43for those. All right.
- 15:45All right. So today there was a
- 15:48announcement about a new milestone
- 15:50coming up for Seeker Summit with our 11
- 15:5311 goal.
- 15:55Is there a significance to the number 11
- 15:5811? What made you pick that number?
- 16:01What made me pick that number? Uh
- 16:05I was
- 16:08I had 30 about 38 seconds between two
- 16:11calls and
- 16:12>> [laughter]
- 16:13>> I had to pick a number.
- 16:15And it just felt right. That was really
- 16:17the extent of it. Okay. So the people
- 16:19reading into it and
- 16:21Yeah, there's people already that are
- 16:23like it's the the clues at 11 minutes
- 16:25and 11 seconds of the episode. So don't
- 16:28read into it too much is what you're
- 16:29telling us.
- 16:30>> bother. No, it's it was just the easiest
- 16:33thing to type.
- 16:35Well, good question and good
- 16:36clarification cuz you've stirred a lot
- 16:38of you kicked the hornets' nest with the
- 16:4011 11. So you know how that works,
- 16:41right?
- 16:41>> Yeah, no matter what number I chose, it
- 16:43was going to cause something. So yeah.
- 16:45It didn't matter. It didn't matter.
- 16:46You're right. You're right. Uh well, we
- 16:48appreciate you clarifying that so we're
- 16:49not chasing the 11 11 all day long and
- 16:51trying to figure out what that means. So
- 16:53thank you. That's that's that's helpful.
- 16:55Um Justin, if BT and me were a game of
- 16:58hot and cold, where would you say the
- 17:00community is? Are they they still they
- 17:01still cold or they getting warmer or
- 17:03they burning up? And would you be
- 17:05surprised if the treasure isn't found in
- 17:08the next year?
- 17:11Yeah, I mean, I suppose it depends on
- 17:12your your definition of community. Like
- 17:14there there are many people that are
- 17:16searching for the treasure that don't
- 17:18partake in, you know, a lot of the
- 17:19social media aspects.
- 17:22Uh and so there there are many
- 17:24[clears throat] communities that have
- 17:25formed within the the the BT and me
- 17:28world, if you will, whether it's
- 17:29Discord, Facebook, or a combination
- 17:31thereof.
- 17:32Um
- 17:33uh Reddit and and so forth. And so
- 17:38you know, I I I
- 17:40I have been busy enough lately with
- 17:43other things that
- 17:45uh I wouldn't say that I've lost touch,
- 17:46but I I don't have the same pulse that I
- 17:49did, say, a month ago.
- 17:51Uh but
- 17:53you know, I think each of those
- 17:54communities
- 17:56group think does
- 17:57tend to rule the day. And
- 18:01I think sometimes that can be a
- 18:03detriment.
- 18:05And so
- 18:07you know, if I look at each of them
- 18:10I wouldn't say that there's
- 18:12to the best of my knowledge any
- 18:15any community out there that is is like
- 18:18way off in left field or anything like
- 18:20that. Um but I wouldn't I would also say
- 18:22that I'm not aware of any community that
- 18:25is like
- 18:26as a group think uber close either. So
- 18:29somewhere in between.
- 18:31I don't know if that helps or not.
- 18:33No, but you make a good point about
- 18:35group think and I think that's common
- 18:36pretty much any in in life, but is there
- 18:38any So do you want to throw anybody a
- 18:40bone here or is there any group think
- 18:42ideas out there that you've seen that
- 18:44you would like to debunk and like get
- 18:46people to go, "Okay, don't stop looking
- 18:48at that. It's not worth your time. Let's
- 18:50move move on." Get them off that that
- 18:52track. Is there Is there one out there
- 18:54that's really big that you see and you
- 18:55go, "Come on, guys. Let's uh you know,
- 18:57we need to you want to shoot that down."
- 19:00Yeah, I mean, I probably just
- 19:02reiterating what's already
- 19:05um what I hope is clear on the website.
- 19:07Like you don't need to go to my
- 19:09the the houses of my friends and family
- 19:12in order to track down the treasure.
- 19:14Um
- 19:16uh Is that happening a lot?
- 19:18Uh
- 19:19there have been some some situations,
- 19:22yeah.
- 19:22>> Okay. So people can stay the heck away
- 19:24from your family like you told them
- 19:26already.
- 19:27Yeah. Uh yeah, I think more than
- 19:29anything it just be maybe kind of reread
- 19:31the rules and the and the and the safety
- 19:33stuff. But beyond that, um
- 19:35not nothing that I'd clarify right now.
- 19:37Okay. Fair enough. And appreciate the
- 19:39the clarification on the family thing so
- 19:41people may may get the the clue on that.
- 19:44Uh during Seeker Summit, uh we have the
- 19:47opportunity to compete in world record
- 19:49breaking treasure hunt um that you're
- 19:51creating. Is there anything that you can
- 19:54tell us about that
- 19:56um, or anything about the hunt in
- 19:57general?
- 19:59Sure, yeah. Um,
- 20:03it's actually a little bit of a tricky
- 20:04situation because the Arizona Attorney
- 20:06General and the statutes of Arizona uh,
- 20:09put some rather severe limitations on
- 20:12us. And so,
- 20:13this will be a very
- 20:15uh, curated or constrained experience.
- 20:19It's not
- 20:21how I would prefer to design a treasure
- 20:24hunt. So,
- 20:25know that going in. Um,
- 20:28and it will have many guardrails on it.
- 20:30Uh,
- 20:31know that going in.
- 20:32Uh, and so I think it's just one of
- 20:34those things where you can only do so
- 20:37much with those constraints. And
- 20:41I've tried to do the best that I could
- 20:42given those constraints. So, I think
- 20:43probably the first one would be is I
- 20:45hope you guys aren't too disappointed.
- 20:47>> [laughter]
- 20:48>> Uh, but it is kind of it is what it is
- 20:50at this point. Uh, there there certainly
- 20:52is a physical aspect to it. It's not
- 20:54like you'll just be you know, standing
- 20:56in one place. It's not completely mental
- 20:58like where you know, trying to solve
- 21:00something on paper.
- 21:01Uh, there is a mental aspect to it.
- 21:03There will be a physical component to it
- 21:05as well. And that's important because
- 21:08um, the Guinness Book of World Records
- 21:10has stringent rules in terms of what
- 21:12constitutes an actual treasure hunt, a
- 21:14physical treasure hunt. So, uh, people
- 21:16will be moving around. There'll be no
- 21:18need to drive anywhere. It's going to be
- 21:21on site at the Tucson Expo Center.
- 21:25Everything will be indoors.
- 21:26And
- 21:28uh, you really there's not much you
- 21:31could do in terms of prep work. The the
- 21:33main things that I'd say just in terms
- 21:34of Secret Summit in general is if you
- 21:36have a mobile device, bring it. You
- 21:38don't need it for the treasure hunt.
- 21:39It's more around getting access to
- 21:42submit your questions for the Q&A
- 21:44efficiently.
- 21:45And you know, to help with the check-in
- 21:46process. And then the other piece would
- 21:48be um, see if you can [clears throat]
- 21:50recall the email that you used when you
- 21:53purchased your tickets cuz that'll be
- 21:54useful in order uh, to get access to the
- 21:57the site that powers the Q&A.
- 22:00Uh, in terms of the treasure hunt
- 22:03beyond that, um,
- 22:08it might be useful to bring something
- 22:11that you can uh, write on. You know, I
- 22:14mean a clipboard or just you know, a
- 22:15book or something where that's kind of
- 22:17flat and hard where you
- 22:18you can actually write on it as you as
- 22:20you move around. And that'd be that'd be
- 22:22my only advice so far.
- 22:24Perfect. Okay.
- 22:27All right. So, I know you've watched
- 22:28some of our episodes before.
- 22:30>> [clears throat and cough]
- 22:30>> We have one question that we like to ask
- 22:32every single guest that comes on.
- 22:34So, do you have an embarrassing or funny
- 22:38story that happened to you while you
- 22:40were boots on the ground?
- 22:42>> [laughter]
- 22:43>> That's that all of my boots on the
- 22:44ground?
- 22:46Oh, jeez.
- 22:48Um,
- 22:51boy, I don't even know where to start.
- 22:56Uh, I've had many embarrassing
- 22:58experiences.
- 23:00Um,
- 23:02>> [laughter]
- 23:03>> there's one time when I was hiking and I
- 23:05I I heard a noise
- 23:08and I thought it was
- 23:11an animal like rooting around, snorting,
- 23:14and making noises. And
- 23:17>> [laughter]
- 23:18>> I went to investigate said noise and it
- 23:20was actually a a hiker that had stepped
- 23:22off the path that was um,
- 23:25uh, going number two. And
- 23:28there's a lot of noises associated with
- 23:29that that I totally mistook for
- 23:31something else.
- 23:32And I got way too close before I didn't
- 23:36I saw the person. And it was just a
- 23:37really awkward situation. So, that was
- 23:40pretty embarrassing. Yeah.
- 23:42Well, luckily you didn't hit him with
- 23:43some bear spray or something. Here's a
- 23:45>> [laughter]
- 23:48>> It's not good. Not good. That would have
- 23:49been Yeah, that would have been a really
- 23:50good story.
- 23:52All right. Justin, we've kind of exhaust
- 23:54we've gone through our our rapid fire or
- 23:55not a rapid fire question, our round
- 23:56robin questions there. Um,
- 23:58went through a little quicker than I
- 24:00thought. But we do have a lot of little
- 24:01rapid fire questions. Again, your your
- 24:04your no no harm no foul to just punt on
- 24:06any of these or or tell us you know,
- 24:08maybe Secret Summit. But if you'd like
- 24:09to answer them, I'm sure the community
- 24:11would really enjoy that. So, What is
- 24:14I'll go ahead. What's that? Oh, I said
- 24:16I'll do my best. Go right ahead.
- 24:17>> Well, you well, that's yes, exactly.
- 24:19What question are you tired of treasure
- 24:21hunters asking you?
- 24:24Tired?
- 24:25Um,
- 24:29hm.
- 24:34When you hear it, you're like, not
- 24:35again. Seriously. Yeah, it's not that
- 24:38there's a question that I'm tired of.
- 24:40It's more I think
- 24:42the one that kind of still gives me a
- 24:43chuckle to this day is
- 24:46where people will send emails and
- 24:50you know, they're really looking for a
- 24:51hint. And so, they're just you know,
- 24:54respond if I'm just in the right general
- 24:56area or respond if uh,
- 24:58you know, with an emoji if you know, on
- 25:00this video if you think that and so on.
- 25:03And
- 25:04I mean, of course I'm not I'm I'm not
- 25:06going to indulge in that. But
- 25:08uh, I the persistence has been very
- 25:11impressive. There have been a lot of
- 25:12people that have tried very hard. And I
- 25:14think the most unique one
- 25:17uh, and you know who you are. Uh,
- 25:19the was actually at the book signing
- 25:21event in Dillon.
- 25:23And when I received a book to sign, on
- 25:26the page it said,
- 25:28"Is the treasure in Montana? If no, sign
- 25:32on this side. If yes, sign on the other
- 25:34the other side of the page."
- 25:35>> [laughter]
- 25:37>> And I feel you know, it's kind of like
- 25:38this nonchalant type of thing where
- 25:39nobody will know. Just pick a page. And
- 25:42of course I I turned to a totally
- 25:43different page number and signed. But
- 25:46>> [laughter]
- 25:46>> people try. Yeah.
- 25:48Right. Yeah, I you know, I guess it's
- 25:50just human nature. We're going to we're
- 25:51going to try to get what we can out of
- 25:53you. But yeah, I can understand that
- 25:54being like you know, like blink twice if
- 25:56it's in Montana.
- 25:57>> [laughter]
- 25:58>> Okay, never mind.
- 26:00Let me ask you a question about Secret
- 26:01Summit. Well, aside from the fact that
- 26:02you're going to eliminate at least one
- 26:04state
- 26:05um, right from from BTME depending on
- 26:08and possibly two if we have a number of
- 26:10questions. Uh, my I want to know have
- 26:13you one have you decided what that
- 26:14state's going to be. Two, if you have,
- 26:17are we going to go
- 26:18meh like if you when you say it or are
- 26:21we going to be like ooh like ooh, I
- 26:23can't believe he eliminated that state.
- 26:26Well, frankly, I'm on the fence. And
- 26:29there are there are two states in my
- 26:32mind that are on the chopping block.
- 26:34Um,
- 26:35now, if in the
- 26:39uh, Emma, don't kill me for saying this.
- 26:40But I think the rare chance that we we
- 26:42hit 2,000, I would I would eliminate
- 26:45both of those those states that are in
- 26:47my mind. Uh, but if we don't, I'm still
- 26:51I'm still debating
- 26:52which one it's going to be. And I think
- 26:56you know, each
- 26:58state elimination would have a very
- 27:00different impact. And so, I'm still
- 27:02still mulling it over. I like to keep my
- 27:04options open. Um, I'm I'm leaning toward
- 27:06one versus the other. But I haven't made
- 27:08a solid firm decision yet. Okay. Is it
- 27:11important to you to get that good
- 27:12reaction of ooh or just everybody to go
- 27:16uh?
- 27:17Uh, you know, Do you do you care?
- 27:20I do care because um,
- 27:24you know, I mean, certainly people are
- 27:26investing their time and and resources
- 27:29to be at the Secret Summit. And so,
- 27:31it's important to me that that
- 27:34well, people enjoy themselves while
- 27:36they're there. And I think the the state
- 27:37elimination is is a part of that
- 27:39experience.
- 27:40Uh, I mean, certainly it'll be posted on
- 27:42the website and so on afterward. Uh, so
- 27:44it's not like you're getting a huge leg
- 27:46up by by being there necessarily. It's
- 27:48more just around the the excitement, I
- 27:50think. And so,
- 27:52yeah, I mean, I I think that that
- 27:54portion is is important to me. Yeah.
- 27:57Okay. Fair good. Fair enough. We're very
- 27:58excited. There's been a lot debate. We
- 28:01we talked about that with we were on
- 28:02M&J's show last week and we had a big
- 28:04discussion about it. So, hopefully I'm
- 28:06sure they'll bring it up tomorrow when
- 28:07they talk to you. Um, so if if we only
- 28:10eliminate one there,
- 28:12how would you feel about coming back on
- 28:14here in a couple months and eliminating
- 28:16another one with us?
- 28:18Stranger things have happened, you know.
- 28:20>> [laughter]
- 28:21>> That's true.
- 28:23That's very true. Okay, Justin,
- 28:25uh, has anybody solved the cipher? And
- 28:27if not, can we get a hint on the cipher?
- 28:33To the best of my knowledge, no. No one
- 28:35has solved the cipher. And
- 28:39uh, that is actually something I do
- 28:41plan to
- 28:44clarify or or provide some some clarity
- 28:48on it at at the Secret Summit to help
- 28:51uh, push that one along a bit if you
- 28:53will.
- 28:54And you know, I think as I mentioned
- 28:56before, the
- 28:58the cipher answer is not
- 29:02something that will
- 29:04give you a a huge advantage or anything.
- 29:06It's more around
- 29:08helping you understand what the
- 29:10container is, which I think in some
- 29:12regard could help.
- 29:14Um,
- 29:15but that's the main point of the of the
- 29:17cipher. And I think there is a sticking
- 29:20point that I've
- 29:22I realized uh,
- 29:24fairly quickly after everything launched
- 29:27um, that I think there's a many people
- 29:29that are just a little bit hung up on.
- 29:31And I think with just a slight amount of
- 29:33of additional clarity there that will
- 29:36will get some progress. Okay. We're
- 29:38overthinking it.
- 29:40Uh, no. I it's not that people I mean,
- 29:41some people certainly are. But
- 29:44um,
- 29:45I see it as a for lack of a better term
- 29:48a noise problem.
- 29:50There is too much there is too much
- 29:52noise that's been interjected that makes
- 29:54it difficult to
- 29:56to filter out to see
- 29:59what you need to see. And so I need to I
- 30:01need to rectify that. Okay, a groupthink
- 30:04problem perhaps.
- 30:05Well, maybe a little. Maybe.
- 30:07>> Okay,
- 30:07fair enough.
- 30:09Um speaking of hints, can we get a hint
- 30:10on the clocks?
- 30:13>> [laughter]
- 30:15>> Maybe a secret summit.
- 30:16>> Okay, fair enough. Fair enough.
- 30:17Um do we need to pay special attention
- 30:20to the 1652 oak tree shilling? It seems
- 30:23to be pretty important to you. Some
- 30:24folks have asked about that.
- 30:27Yes, so the
- 30:28I don't know if I've ever mentioned the
- 30:30backstory on that. Maybe I have, so I
- 30:32apologize if I repeat myself, but
- 30:35um
- 30:37the 1652 oak tree shilling actually
- 30:41the original one that I
- 30:43had actually came from my grandfather
- 30:45and it was from his collection and
- 30:48it
- 30:49it was very special to me just because
- 30:51of how I became how I came to learn
- 30:53about it and where it came from. And it
- 30:55turned out that that coin was
- 30:57counterfeit. And I was just heartbroken
- 31:01when I found that out and I never had
- 31:03the heart to tell him
- 31:05my grandfather that it that it was
- 31:06counterfeit. And so it it bothered me a
- 31:10lot over the years and I and I had just
- 31:12said to myself back then that one day I
- 31:15if I ever have the means I will
- 31:17I will get one, but it'll be the real
- 31:19thing. And I actually really wanted to
- 31:21do that before my grandfather passed and
- 31:23it didn't didn't work out, but I did end
- 31:26up getting it and that's
- 31:28that's the significance of it. It's kind
- 31:30of a little bit of the backstory. Oh,
- 31:32that's awesome. Did you get one to keep
- 31:33for yourself?
- 31:36Uh no, that's actually that's the only
- 31:38one and it it went into the treasure. Um
- 31:42as far as I know it's it's I think it's
- 31:44tied for the highest graded Ando edition
- 31:48oak tree shilling in existence. So it's
- 31:50it's it's pretty rare.
- 31:52Okay, very good. Well,
- 31:54I'll tell you this. I'll if when I find
- 31:56the treasure, I'm going to I'm going to
- 31:57give that back to you. So it's
- 31:59That's that's kind of you to offer, but
- 32:01No strings attached really. Whoever
- 32:03finds it it's all yours. It's buddy. You
- 32:05guys own this. So
- 32:07Um let's ask about you you you gave when
- 32:10the when the technical clue was was
- 32:11discovered, you you let the community
- 32:13know that that was found. Are you going
- 32:14to let the community know when the
- 32:15checkpoint is discovered or if the
- 32:17checkpoint is discovered?
- 32:20Um
- 32:22if I come to learn that the checkpoint
- 32:24has been discovered,
- 32:26I would likely announce that it has been
- 32:29discovered, but I would not divulge what
- 32:31it is until after the treasure is found.
- 32:34Fair enough. Okay.
- 32:36Good answer. Good answer.
- 32:37Um this is for me. Is a gazebo a
- 32:40structure or a building?
- 32:42>> [laughter]
- 32:44>> You know, that's a funny one. Um
- 32:50I think based on the formal definition,
- 32:52a gazebo
- 32:54would be considered a type of building,
- 32:57especially as it pertains to things like
- 32:59building codes, but I could be mistaken
- 33:01there. I would actually have to check a
- 33:04uh a dictionary to be absolutely
- 33:07certain, but I would tend toward it
- 33:08being a building. I could be off base. I
- 33:11I'm not concerned what the dictionary
- 33:12says. I'm concerned what you think a
- 33:14gazebo is.
- 33:15>> [laughter]
- 33:16>> I I would categorize
- 33:18you know, a building being anything that
- 33:21has um
- 33:25uh a shelter from from the elements in
- 33:28terms of having some sort of overhead
- 33:29component to it and something that you
- 33:32can quote unquote step inside. So, you
- 33:34know, you can step into a gazebo. So
- 33:36personally, I would consider that to be
- 33:38a form of a building. Okay, very good.
- 33:40I'm thank you for answering that. I
- 33:42appreciate that. Um speaking of the
- 33:44rules and man-made and things like that.
- 33:45I I know that you know,
- 33:47you spent a lot of time in the book
- 33:48talking about loopholes. Maybe not a lot
- 33:49of time, but there definitely was some
- 33:50chapters on loopholes. Are there any
- 33:52loopholes in the rules that you put
- 33:54aside? Is there is there going to be an
- 33:57aha moment where we go, okay, like we
- 33:59need to look at we need to look at this
- 34:00from a loophole perspective, not just
- 34:02what he said about man-made structure or
- 34:05near gravestones or graveyards like
- 34:07things like that. Like is there a
- 34:10is are there any loopholes built into
- 34:13the rules?
- 34:20Not none that are are intentional. I
- 34:23mean, I think there's one that maybe
- 34:25arguably somebody could quibble about.
- 34:27Um but beyond that, no. No, the the
- 34:31rules are really meant to be cut and
- 34:32dry. Okay.
- 34:35Interesting. So that that makes me
- 34:37wonder like why all the loophole talk if
- 34:38there's no loopholes in the rules. So
- 34:41but that's okay.
- 34:42>> [laughter]
- 34:46>> Is there a poem solver there's more than
- 34:48one clue with a man-made implication?
- 34:53Is there a poem solver there's more than
- 34:55one clue with a man-made implication?
- 35:00Maybe that's not very clear. That
- 35:03Yeah, I'm thinking through this.
- 35:12I want to make sure I answer this
- 35:13accurately. So I I I'm willing to answer
- 35:15this just
- 35:17I want to think a little bit of more
- 35:19about it before I provide an answer. So
- 35:21I'll consider it a follow-up. Yeah.
- 35:23Okay, got it. Got it. Got it.
- 35:25Okay,
- 35:26well to kind of a another part of that.
- 35:29Can a hunt item be displayed on the
- 35:31outside of a man-made building or
- 35:33structure?
- 35:35Maybe not inside a structure, but uh
- 35:38on the outside.
- 35:40Uh I don't want to
- 35:42to limit that. So I I would say it's
- 35:44it's always a possibility. Got it.
- 35:47Is the BTME logo a clue?
- 35:51Um
- 35:56what I can say is that I I designed the
- 35:59the logo intentionally.
- 36:01And um it has it has some meaning.
- 36:06Okay. Okay.
- 36:08Um are you too smart for us mortals? Are
- 36:10you um
- 36:12I I like to say Justin has confirmation
- 36:14bias. You know, when you when you talk
- 36:15when you're giving out answers and
- 36:17things like that. Like if you know
- 36:18exactly what the solve is, like it's
- 36:20easy for you to to um
- 36:22maybe
- 36:23not translate in the way that us mere
- 36:25mortals are able to to understand. We
- 36:27know you're a super smart guy,
- 36:29engineering guy, you know, math guy.
- 36:32Um is this going to be too hard for us?
- 36:35I'm probably a lot worse at math than
- 36:37you you might guess. Um
- 36:40No, you know, so when I designed this, I
- 36:42really
- 36:44I think somebody I
- 36:46Megan, you might ask earlier this this
- 36:48question about um
- 36:50you know, what
- 36:52what I would embrace most is in terms of
- 36:54designing the treasure hunt and it is
- 36:56that that childlike wonder. And so
- 36:59uh at least in my mind, I like to think
- 37:01that somebody of
- 37:04you know, even
- 37:06pretty young age would be able to
- 37:09to solve this if they put their mind to
- 37:11it and
- 37:12and you know, figured out the right
- 37:14stuff and the right context and so on.
- 37:16Uh
- 37:18So
- 37:20you know, it's nothing that requires any
- 37:21sort of you know, college degree or
- 37:25really even any high school diploma or
- 37:27anything like that. Um
- 37:29I tried to make it as approachable as as
- 37:31I could. Okay.
- 37:34Now having said that, would people that
- 37:35maybe have a background in fishing or
- 37:37hunting or hiking or outdoorsy type out
- 37:40activities, would they have a leg up on
- 37:43on most folks in this?
- 37:47You know, I think it's almost impossible
- 37:48to design
- 37:50something where
- 37:53there's zero specialized knowledge in
- 37:54anything in the world that would, you
- 37:56know, give somebody a leg up. Uh
- 38:00So I'm hesitant to say
- 38:04I'm hesitant to to say that it wouldn't
- 38:07help. Um
- 38:09but probably not as much as as people
- 38:12might think. Okay. Okay, fair enough.
- 38:15Are you willing to rule out digging and
- 38:17the the treasure being buried?
- 38:21Yeah, I I think I think you know,
- 38:23if if you know where the treasure's at,
- 38:24it's not going to matter either way. So
- 38:26I'm it's not something I'm willing to
- 38:28rule out at this time.
- 38:30Okay, interesting. Okay.
- 38:32Um have you ever had to go check on the
- 38:33box for any any weather conditions?
- 38:37No, I haven't. Um
- 38:41at at this stage certainly I'd be
- 38:43reticent or
- 38:45very cautious about doing anything like
- 38:46that. So I have no plans in the future
- 38:49to
- 38:50ever return to the exact location of the
- 38:53treasure. Okay, cuz obviously you're
- 38:55familiar with Posey Tracker where we
- 38:57have you we have we have scouts on the
- 38:58ground following your every move exactly
- 39:01where you're going at all times, right?
- 39:02>> You don't know how late you are
- 39:03actually.
- 39:04>> [laughter]
- 39:05>> Oh, am I Sorry, I was being a little I
- 39:08was being a little facetious, but
- 39:10I guess it wouldn't surprise me, huh?
- 39:11Yeah, I mean, there
- 39:14Yeah, some tricky people out there, you
- 39:15know. I mean, for instance, you know, I
- 39:17get packages in the mail and
- 39:20uh you know, it'll be a gift, but
- 39:22there'll be something built into the
- 39:24gift that happens to track location.
- 39:26Lots of lots of fun little things that
- 39:28you got to deal with. So there's always
- 39:30gotchas. Yeah. Interesting. Well, what's
- 39:32what's the most what's the craziest
- 39:34thing you've gotten in the in the mail
- 39:35based on you know, for
- 39:37that's trying to track you or or what
- 39:39whatever that that you got. Oh gosh. Um
- 39:43Um
- 39:45I think more than anything what the
- 39:46craziest thing that surprised me was the
- 39:48sophistication.
- 39:49Uh
- 39:51You know, certainly
- 39:54it's not like somebody went to the dime
- 39:55store and set this up. It was It was
- 39:58quite well done.
- 40:00Um
- 40:01And it was more just around the compact
- 40:03form and how it was incorporated
- 40:04incorporated into a gift that I received
- 40:07uh that made it rather hard to detect.
- 40:11And the the gift was very intentional in
- 40:14the sense that it would be very tempting
- 40:17for somebody say like me uh to have it
- 40:19on me at all times because it's it it
- 40:21it's meant to be an everyday
- 40:22convenience. So, uh
- 40:25it was very very well designed. I'll
- 40:27I'll give the person credit there.
- 40:29Wow, so do you have something that can
- 40:30detect that? Like some kind of bug or
- 40:32scanner or something that detects things
- 40:34that are you know, help that that are
- 40:36tracking devices or what I'm fascinated
- 40:39with that looks like.
- 40:41>> [laughter]
- 40:42>> It's a It's actually a a a rather
- 40:44rigorous system. You know, there's
- 40:47um
- 40:49almost nothing can be delivered directly
- 40:51to my house. And
- 40:53>> Oh.
- 40:53um
- 40:55My mail goes through a a fairly
- 40:57elaborate system.
- 40:58And
- 41:00um
- 41:01you know, it is never opened at the
- 41:03house. And
- 41:05it is thoroughly scanned and vetted
- 41:08before anything comes to the house.
- 41:10Uh and so on. So, it's it's a whole
- 41:13system and I'm sure my family just can't
- 41:15stand me for it. So
- 41:17Well,
- 41:17>> [laughter]
- 41:17>> it sounds elaborate, but it just it gets
- 41:19me I mean, I never would have thought
- 41:20that that would be a thing that you
- 41:22would have to set up a system for your
- 41:23mail that that
- 41:25for things to go through. It makes me
- 41:27wonder like what other systems do you
- 41:28have in place in your life that that
- 41:30normal people don't think about that
- 41:32you're you're having to deal with now
- 41:34because you're you know, you're J Money
- 41:36and everybody wants a a piece of of you
- 41:38and wants the wants the
- 41:40to be involved with this. Like Can I If
- 41:43you don't mind, I mean, do you have
- 41:43anything else that you you want to share
- 41:45that you systems that you have to put in
- 41:47place just to keep your own safety and
- 41:48sanity?
- 41:51Yeah, I mean, it's
- 41:52you know, I went in eyes wide open. So,
- 41:54I'm not complaining. It's It's more
- 41:56around
- 41:58uh I think this is probably just good
- 41:59advice for people that are looking to do
- 42:02a large-scale treasure hunt is that
- 42:04uh in in some respects, it will run your
- 42:07life if uh well, no matter what you do,
- 42:11uh especially if you if you try and do
- 42:13it right.
- 42:14>> [laughter]
- 42:15>> And and to uh make sure that it
- 42:17continues to be fair for everybody.
- 42:19Uh there there are a lot of things. You
- 42:21know, I mean
- 42:23I've I've gosh, I could probably write a
- 42:25whole book about it.
- 42:27Uh you know, being in in certain public
- 42:29places and people putting trackers on
- 42:31vehicles or
- 42:33uh
- 42:34you know, following me from place to
- 42:35place seeing where I'm going or um
- 42:39um
- 42:41uh befriending people that are friends
- 42:44with me
- 42:46um
- 42:47in order to pose what seemed to be
- 42:49innocuous questions to me uh that are
- 42:52actually quite the opposite. And so, I
- 42:54have kind of this constant radar, if you
- 42:56will.
- 42:57>> [laughter]
- 42:57>> So, no matter who it is when they're
- 42:59asking me questions or talking to me
- 43:02uh it's it's really a state of constant
- 43:04vigilance. Interesting.
- 43:06>> I think that um
- 43:08I'm I'm okay with it. You know, I I've
- 43:09I've kind of built it into my lifestyle
- 43:11and I I feel I feel good about it. But I
- 43:13can imagine that for many people's
- 43:16lifestyles, it would be very hard.
- 43:18And so, I I would say that you know, a
- 43:20large-scale treasure hunt is not for
- 43:21everybody.
- 43:22And you do need to think about those
- 43:24those types of things before you you
- 43:27embark on on something like this because
- 43:29you know, in in in some some respects,
- 43:31it is a a form of an an obligation, if
- 43:34you will. But I'm still having a lot of
- 43:35fun with it. So, again, I'm not
- 43:37complaining. It's just things that have
- 43:38happened. Okay. Well, it's interesting
- 43:40because in Vegas like you
- 43:42you were so approachable and and so just
- 43:44just mingling and having a good time and
- 43:46I didn't see like that you know, kind of
- 43:48what you're saying like you know, you
- 43:49had all these treasure hunters in a room
- 43:51that would have you know, given their
- 43:53left arm to get some kind of clue or
- 43:55something out of you. But you were very
- 43:57but you're very personable, you're very
- 43:58open, approachable. Um seems a little
- 44:00bit of a contrast from from what you're
- 44:02what you're describing. Um I guess my
- 44:05question would be would you do this
- 44:06again?
- 44:09You know, it's it's been a very unique
- 44:10experience. And and I think I
- 44:14I feel that I can relate to Forrest Fenn
- 44:16on a different level than I I could
- 44:18ever. And it and it was just it was easy
- 44:20for me to sit back and pontificate and
- 44:22think, oh, well, this is what it's going
- 44:23to be like. Uh but it's an entirely
- 44:26different thing to to experience it
- 44:28firsthand. And and there are certainly
- 44:30certainly still you know, family members
- 44:32that are close to me that
- 44:35um
- 44:36you know, there there are times where
- 44:37they might not realize the gravity of
- 44:38the situation.
- 44:40And uh you know, they're
- 44:42they they will certain actions like
- 44:45totally unintentional
- 44:47uh that that can at times exacerbate the
- 44:50the situation. Um so, no, I I I don't
- 44:53regret it. Would I do it again?
- 44:55I think the honest answer is I don't
- 44:56know yet. Uh I want to follow this
- 44:58through to completion and see what the
- 45:01uh the end result is.
- 45:03You know, I think it's true to say that
- 45:05many treasure hunts
- 45:07uh end poorly
- 45:09after it's found. And so, I think that's
- 45:11really the real Yeah, that that that is
- 45:14the the litmus test here to make sure
- 45:17uh this is all kind of airtight, if you
- 45:19will. And depending on how that goes, I
- 45:22I could see a future where
- 45:25you know, an an additional treasure hunt
- 45:26could happen. Oh, you got to hear first.
- 45:29An additional treasure hunt from Justin.
- 45:31That's what I think you know, Megan has
- 45:32speculated that there you know, they
- 45:34talk about the two letters in your in
- 45:36your in the in the box there. One for
- 45:37the steward and what's the other? The
- 45:39bomb show one. So, that's what we're
- 45:41we're maybe thinking that it might be
- 45:43part two of of that. So Stranger things
- 45:47have happened. Yeah. Uh uh
- 45:49>> [clears throat]
- 45:49>> okay. Very good. Very good.
- 45:52Um oh gosh, I had a follow-up there and
- 45:53I just lost it. But that's all right. I
- 45:55have other questions for you. Um do the
- 45:57illustrations in the book have clues in
- 45:59them?
- 46:08You know, that that
- 46:09building building clues into things that
- 46:11you have to convey to another person is
- 46:15is a challenging thing. So, a good
- 46:17example would be the hint that was found
- 46:19in the song.
- 46:21Uh the only reason that I was able to do
- 46:24that is because I had
- 46:26you know, a
- 46:27a deep level of of control in the final
- 46:29product that was produced. Mhm. And you
- 46:32know, the illustrations
- 46:35are challenging in that regard because
- 46:38you know, it's not like you just call up
- 46:40the illustrator and say, "Hey, I want
- 46:42all of these very specific aspects built
- 46:44into an illustration because they're
- 46:46important." It's kind of a tip-off. Mhm.
- 46:48And so, um
- 46:52you know, I I I had a lot of direction
- 46:54that I gave to the illustrator in terms
- 46:56of what I wanted. But at the end of the
- 46:57day, she had the final choice in terms
- 47:00of how it was rendered.
- 47:02Um so, I'm not I'm purposely not
- 47:05answering the question directly. Uh
- 47:07but what I will say is that uh the
- 47:10illustrator, she she has no special
- 47:12knowledge. It's not like you know, I I I
- 47:14told her very specific things or
- 47:16anything like that.
- 47:18Fair enough. Okay, great. I remember my
- 47:19question. Going back to like the where
- 47:21you talked about about how how your hunt
- 47:25wraps up
- 47:27whenever it comes to fruition. How
- 47:29important is it for you that people look
- 47:31at the solve and go, "That makes sense.
- 47:34I understand it. Logically, I can go
- 47:36point A, point B, you know, point B, C
- 47:38all the way through." Not do I like it,
- 47:40not do I agree with it. But is it
- 47:42important for you that you know, and you
- 47:44know, reasonable person is a very loose
- 47:45definition these days. But a reasonable
- 47:47person looks at it and goes, "I
- 47:49understand that. That makes sense to me.
- 47:50I think I I can see how that that
- 47:53works."
- 47:54Is that important to you?
- 47:56I mean, I I I think within reason. I
- 47:58mean, it it would be strange to hold a
- 48:00treasure hunt where
- 48:02you know, a
- 48:03a very small minority even understood in
- 48:06retrospect what it even means. And so
- 48:09Yeah, I mean, I I think that is
- 48:10important. And it's like
- 48:13I Well, a good example would be a Sudoku
- 48:15puzzle, right? Like once it's solved
- 48:19I anybody can do it and look at the math
- 48:21and say, "Well, yeah, it's it's
- 48:22definitely correct. There's no ifs,
- 48:24ands, or buts about it." And then at the
- 48:26opposite end of the spectrum
- 48:28you know, if you tell somebody to go
- 48:31uh you know, jump in a lake. And then
- 48:33it's like, "Well, there's
- 48:3612 million lakes in the world. Like
- 48:37which one are you talking about?" Uh
- 48:40Well, well, I meant that one over in
- 48:41Norway, right? I mean, that
- 48:43that's kind of the opposite end of it.
- 48:44Like how would anybody have ever known
- 48:46it was Norway?
- 48:47And so, I think there's somewhere in
- 48:49there there's a middle ground. And I
- 48:51like to think that when this is over
- 48:54uh people will have more understanding.
- 48:57And the average person would be able to
- 48:59say
- 49:01"Okay.
- 49:02Seems reasonable."
- 49:03Okay.
- 49:04Um the only thing I got out of that
- 49:05whole thing, Justin, was that we need to
- 49:07go jump in a lake is what I've heard.
- 49:09>> [laughter]
- 49:10>> The jump in a lake is it definitely a
- 49:12clue and we need to jump in a lake. All
- 49:14right. Can you tell me which lake it is?
- 49:16Blink twice for Lake Minnetonka.
- 49:19>> [laughter]
- 49:19>> You sound like a treasure hunter. Yeah.
- 49:23Um this is this is more schematic so
- 49:24people you know, and I I've I've heard
- 49:26people say this and and I I you know, I
- 49:28just I I think it might be helpful for
- 49:30them to hear you say it. A lot of people
- 49:32when they say um or like content
- 49:34creators say um people have been within
- 49:37200 ft of this or that or the other
- 49:39thing." They they want to argue that,
- 49:41"Well, well maybe it's just random
- 49:42people walking around hiking on a trail.
- 49:44It's not searchers." Can you Can you
- 49:46clear Can you confirm that when you say
- 49:48someone is within 200 ft up at the
- 49:50checkpoint or people are close, you're
- 49:52talking about actual searchers? That's
- 49:54just to clarify that. Is that a fair
- 49:57way to put that? I know people get
- 49:58wrapped up in the in the wording of that
- 50:00sometimes. I just wanted to clarify
- 50:01that.
- 50:02I mean, it it's true to say that there
- 50:05there have been at least a few searchers
- 50:07that have been
- 50:09uh
- 50:10quite close.
- 50:11Uh yeah, quite close. Okay. But, they
- 50:14are searchers. They're They're not just
- 50:16random, you know, cuz people will take
- 50:17that as you're saying 200 They are
- 50:19searchers. People have been with that.
- 50:20Okay, perfect. That's just That was just
- 50:21a clarification point there. Um the
- 50:24Forrest Fenn hunt required a river
- 50:26crossing to get to the the treasure box.
- 50:28Does yours require any kind of river
- 50:30crossing, wading through water?
- 50:33I have not specified.
- 50:35I'm not I'm giving you the opportunity,
- 50:36Justin. That's what this is all about.
- 50:38I appreciate the opportunity. Noted.
- 50:40>> Okay, well okay.
- 50:41>> [laughter]
- 50:43>> All right, fine, JMoney. I see you.
- 50:46Are you concerned that someone not
- 50:47looking for the treasure is going to
- 50:49find it?
- 50:53I think in on the in the broad spectrum
- 50:56of spectrum of things that are
- 50:59concerning to me, it's
- 51:01it's lower on the totem pole.
- 51:05Okay. How low on the totem pole?
- 51:07Just kidding. At the bottom? I don't
- 51:08know. Okay.
- 51:10These two questions are for me. Did you
- 51:12ever search for dinosaur in Dinosaur
- 51:14National Monument for the Forrest Fenn
- 51:16treasure?
- 51:17Hm.
- 51:19Uh for the Forrest Fenn treasure, no.
- 51:21You didn't.
- 51:23Okay, well, that's
- 51:25that's disappointing. That's just me.
- 51:26Sorry.
- 51:29And um Megan kind of prompted this
- 51:31question for me after me telling her
- 51:34a story about my moose encounter while
- 51:35searching for for your treasure. Um is a
- 51:38moose the animal that you're referring
- 51:39to that you didn't expect to see, but
- 51:41you saw?
- 51:44Uh I hate to bust people's bubbles, but
- 51:45I've seen uh many moose over the years.
- 51:48So, that is that is not the animal in
- 51:50question. All right. Do you think if if
- 51:53someone were to come up with the correct
- 51:56animal, then they would
- 51:58be able to fine-tune their solve? Would
- 52:00they Would that narrow it down if they
- 52:02figured out what animal you saw?
- 52:05It certainly wouldn't hurt.
- 52:08And what animal is that, Justin?
- 52:10>> [laughter]
- 52:12>> I'm not going to volunteer yet.
- 52:14I try. You know, I try. That's right.
- 52:17We'd be doing my job here, you know,
- 52:18anyway. So,
- 52:20uh Justin, hey,
- 52:21that pretty much wraps up our our
- 52:23rapid-fire. Um we got a couple minutes
- 52:25left. Jaws, Megan, any any last
- 52:27questions that have popped up for you
- 52:29for Justin? I know we we've had a list
- 52:30that we wanted to go through.
- 52:34I think we got everything on the list.
- 52:36Perfect. Perfect.
- 52:38Justin, how much do you want to Do you
- 52:40want to talk at all about Secret Summit,
- 52:42anything that
- 52:43coming up that for that that you want to
- 52:45let us know about or surprises that you
- 52:49know, you want to give us a bombshell
- 52:50that we can we can use to boost our
- 52:52numbers to get up to to 200 viewers
- 52:54instead of a 100? So,
- 52:56>> [laughter]
- 52:57>> Oh, gosh. Uh I mean, I think it's going
- 52:59to be a great time for everybody and
- 53:02you know, I I think that the total
- 53:04attendee count is is a little up in the
- 53:06air. Uh
- 53:08You know, I I
- 53:09my perspective on this is I think we're
- 53:10going to be right on the edge in terms
- 53:12of whether or not we can break that
- 53:13world record. I mean, I think it'd be an
- 53:16exciting thing for America to be able to
- 53:18hold the title for the
- 53:20the the Guinness treasure hunt record.
- 53:22Um
- 53:23But, I don't I don't think it's a
- 53:25prerequisite to having fun there. Uh
- 53:28You know, I I think Emma's been doing a
- 53:30fantastic job in terms of drumming up
- 53:32marketing and so on. And you know, I've
- 53:34gotten some messages about this. Uh
- 53:37You know, something to the effect that
- 53:38it's a um
- 53:40it seems to be kind of like the the core
- 53:42focal point of the treasure hunt right
- 53:44now.
- 53:45Uh
- 53:46And I suppose to a certain degree it is
- 53:48because there are are so many people
- 53:50that are making travel arrangements and
- 53:52so on to be there. Uh but, I certainly
- 53:54haven't lost sight of the
- 53:56the treasure hunt in general. Uh and I
- 53:58you know, I think Secret Summit is
- 53:59actually one of those events that um you
- 54:01know, Beyond the Map's Edge I I really
- 54:04think that the concept of treasure
- 54:05hunting, our modern-day treasure
- 54:07hunting,
- 54:08will actually become more popular over
- 54:10time. And I like to think a venue,
- 54:13whether it's Treasure Con or Secret
- 54:15Summit or any of the other ones that
- 54:16that that pop up, I think are going to
- 54:18grow.
- 54:20And so, I like I like kind of being in
- 54:22on the ground floor of that and seeing
- 54:24seeing it kind of take off. And that's
- 54:27the other question that I've got is um
- 54:30you know, why why are there
- 54:33why are there commercial aspects to
- 54:36the treasure hunting convention that's
- 54:37happening at Secret Summit? And you
- 54:40know, the answer to that is that
- 54:42well, we needed funding.
- 54:44>> [laughter]
- 54:45>> And you know, I I'd normally be very
- 54:48concerned around
- 54:50mixing commercial interests with
- 54:52something like Beyond the Map's Edge. I
- 54:53realize how ironic that is given that it
- 54:55was on Netflix, but uh
- 54:58you know, I the reason that I I'm
- 54:59personally okay with this is because it
- 55:01is uh it's for all treasure hunt
- 55:04creators. It's not just this Beyond the
- 55:05Map's Edge thing. And and I think that
- 55:08there's an opportunity to to pull in the
- 55:10right sponsors so that the event can be
- 55:12all that it can all that it should be.
- 55:15And so, there are some sponsorship
- 55:17implications to it, but I certainly
- 55:19don't see it being in a position where
- 55:20it's overshadowing
- 55:22uh
- 55:24you know, the the purity of of treasure
- 55:26hunting. And And I think if it gets to
- 55:28that point, then that would be a more
- 55:30concerning discussion. But, I would love
- 55:32to hear feedback after this. Um
- 55:35uh Secret Summit. Mainly because uh not
- 55:37just because the treasure hunt part
- 55:38might be disappointing,
- 55:40but the
- 55:41uh
- 55:42but just the honest reaction. I mean, I
- 55:44think it's something that that is a good
- 55:45case study and it's something we can
- 55:47build on in future years. And it's not
- 55:49something I'm running. It's something
- 55:50that that Treasure Hunt with us and and
- 55:52Froggy and and Jenny Kyle and so on are
- 55:54all all putting together. Uh but, I
- 55:56think it's something that can grow
- 55:58uh over the years and become a real
- 56:00staple of of uh of a hobby.
- 56:04Excellent. Yes, we're very excited about
- 56:06it. We had the same discussion last week
- 56:07about that. We think we are on the kind
- 56:09of the bleeding edge of the of the
- 56:10treasure hunt
- 56:12world. I think that there there might be
- 56:14some some movement, you know, Mr. Beast
- 56:15with his
- 56:16Super Bowl one. You know, people are
- 56:18going to try to maybe one up your
- 56:19treasure or or John's treasure. You
- 56:22know, there's going to be people coming
- 56:23out of the woodwork to do that stuff.
- 56:24So, I think you we might be on the the
- 56:26edge of a phenomenon here. We'll We'll
- 56:28see. So, I hope so.
- 56:29Yeah. And just just remember who your
- 56:32buddies were when it does happen, right?
- 56:34>> [laughter]
- 56:35>> Justin, you want to let people know what
- 56:36you have coming up in the next couple
- 56:38weeks before in the run-up to Secret
- 56:40Summit? See, I wish I had a list to do a
- 56:43rundown. I know that there's an
- 56:44interview
- 56:46with the Quarter Hoarder on YouTube
- 56:48that's coming up.
- 56:50I'm embarrassed that I don't recall the
- 56:51date. I think it's the the 19th.
- 56:55And then
- 56:56I'll be on Treasure Hunt with us
- 56:58tomorrow evening.
- 56:59And then we're also doing a KOLD News 13
- 57:03Tucson Now
- 57:05uh um
- 57:06streaming broadcast while
- 57:09pretty close to the Secret Summit. I
- 57:11think it's the day before, maybe a
- 57:12couple days before. But, I'll I'll post
- 57:14more info as I get it on the website.
- 57:17Uh and then yeah, I mean, just for
- 57:19awareness, like there's going to be
- 57:20several different
- 57:23media people at the Secret Summit event.
- 57:26I know that uh
- 57:28Outdoor Magazine is doing a a big thing
- 57:30on it. And then we've got uh
- 57:33I think the director or producer from
- 57:35Filthy Fortunes.
- 57:37Uh and then of course some of the folks
- 57:40that were involved in the Netflix side.
- 57:42And there's a few other media folks that
- 57:44are are coming out as well. So, it'll be
- 57:47just kind of a a culmination of a lot of
- 57:49different backgrounds coming together.
- 57:50So, I think it'll be fun. Excellent.
- 57:52Sounds like a great time. Justin Posey,
- 57:54Beyond the Map's Edge. JMoney, we
- 57:56appreciate you being on X Marks the Pod.

- 58:04Secret Summit, having you out there, and
- 58:06maybe even getting some more nuggets
- 58:07that you've kind of kind of teased that
- 58:09we'll get to to experience that at the
- 58:11Secret Summit. Should be a great time.
- 58:12Look forward to seeing you shaking your
- 58:13head out there in the 110° heat in

- 58:19>> [laughter]
