- 0:00Seven years after I disappeared, my
- 0:01sister found my name on the organ donor
- 0:02registry. She stood in the transplant
- 0:04center staring at the paperwork in the
- 0:05nurse's hands. Her brows knit as she
- 0:06looked at the photo attached to the file
- 0:08along with the name I used to go by.
- 0:09"Where is he?" she asked. "He's in
- 0:11hospice on the 12th floor." the nurse
- 0:12answered quietly. "Today is the last day
- 0:14he'll still be conscious. The surgery is
- 0:15scheduled for tomorrow morning." Her
- 0:17expression turned cold as she headed
- 0:18upstairs. The moment she pushed open the
- 0:19door, she saw me sitting on the bed
- 0:21writing my final letter. Landon. I
- 0:23looked up at her and smiled faintly.
- 0:24"You must have the wrong person, Ms.
- 0:25Bennett. My name is Jay Mercer, not
- 0:27Landon Bennett." She stepped toward the
- 0:28bed, her tone rigid. "Come home.
- 0:30Apologize to Mason and I'll hire the
- 0:32best specialist in the country for you."
- 0:33"That won't be necessary." I didn't even
- 0:35look up again as I signed the last line
- 0:36of the organ donation papers. "I didn't
- 0:38do anything wrong. I'm not apologizing
- 0:39to anyone." After a long silence, Sherry
- 0:41Bennett let out a cold laugh. "You
- 0:43really haven't changed. Seven years
- 0:44later and you're still pretending to be
- 0:45innocent." Her eyes narrowed scanning
- 0:47me. "You're sick. What kind of illness
- 0:49needs surgery?" I smiled faintly. "Stage
- 0:51four glioblastoma, brain cancer." I
- 0:53glanced at the donation papers beside
- 0:54me. I figured my organs would do more
- 0:56good saving people than rotting
- 0:57underground. Something flickered across
- 0:59Sherry's face but vanished instantly
- 1:01replaced by that same icy look. "Cut the
- 1:02act. Do you think playing pathetic is
- 1:04going to make me feel sorry for you?"
- 1:05Her gaze swept over the small hospice
- 1:07room taking in the peeling walls, the
- 1:08worn folding chair, and the dying
- 1:10flowers by the window. "So life didn't
- 1:11work out after you left home? If you
- 1:12hadn't done those disgusting things back
- 1:14then, maybe you wouldn't have ended up
- 1:15like this." I lowered my eyes to my
- 1:16hands now so thin every bone showed
- 1:18clearly beneath the skin. I said
- 1:20nothing. "Landon." She said my old name
- 1:22softer this time, her voice cracking.
- 1:23"Are you really that sick?" I looked at
- 1:25her without blinking. "Why do you care,
- 1:26Ms. Bennett?" "Because I'm your sister."
- 1:28"No." My voice stayed calm. "Your
- 1:29brother died seven years ago." Her face
- 1:31went pale with anger. "You really hate
- 1:32me that much? After everything that
- 1:33happened? Are you seriously pretending
- 1:35you weren't the one who Enough." I cut
- 1:36her off. "You didn't come here to dig up
- 1:38the past. Say what you actually came to
- 1:39say." She opened her mouth then
- 1:41hesitated completely speechless. I gave
- 1:43a soft laugh. "Let me guess. Mason needs
- 1:45a new liver, doesn't he?" Sherry didn't
- 1:46answer. She didn't have to. The way her
- 1:48eyes avoided mine told me everything. I
- 1:50leaned back against the hospital bed
- 1:51laughing under my breath. "So that's it.
- 1:53After seven years he finally remembered
- 1:55he had an older brother. Today you came
- 1:56here to ask for my liver. Not ask, she
- 1:58corrected sharply. It's your duty. You
- 2:00agreed to donate before, and Mason needs
- 2:02you again now. He's your brother. I
- 2:03stared at her, amused by how ridiculous
- 2:05she sounded. Sherry, when you kicked me
- 2:07out 7 years ago, why didn't you remember
- 2:08I was his brother then? That was your
- 2:10own fault, she snapped. If you hadn't
- 2:12done those horrible things to Mason, if
- 2:13you hadn't framed him, I never would
- 2:14have kicked you out. Her voice shook
- 2:16with fury. You're still lying, still
- 2:17acting innocent. You think disappearing
- 2:19for 7 years erased what you did? I
- 2:20slowly closed my eyes as numbness spread
- 2:22through my chest. Even now, she never
- 2:24doubted him. To her, I was always the
- 2:25villain. Please leave. I need to rest.
- 2:27She grabbed my shoulder hard enough to
- 2:29hurt. Listen carefully. Mason needs your
- 2:31liver. I opened my eyes, looking at her
- 2:32calmly. Then he can wait for someone
- 2:34else. My organs are already promised to
- 2:35strangers. Her whole body shook with
- 2:37anger. How can you be so heartless?
- 2:39Mason saved my life back then. Without
- 2:40him, the Bennett family wouldn't even
- 2:41exist today. And you're nothing but an
- 2:43ungrateful parasite.
