  1. 0:01well we begin to read from the book of
  2. 0:03Genesis today which describes the fall
  3. 0:07of
  4. 0:08Man some very important truths can be
  5. 0:12found in the Book of Genesis if we sit
  6. 0:15with it and we pray with the that
  7. 0:18book what was the first sin or the
  8. 0:22original sin as we call it what was that
  9. 0:25first
  10. 0:27sin well it was pride and
  11. 0:32Disobedience if we recall the chief
  12. 0:34elements in Genesis
  13. 0:37story Adam and Eve are in the Garden of
  14. 0:42Eden that idilic setting in which they
  15. 0:45walked in the coolness of the night with
  16. 0:48God in easy conversation and in
  17. 0:52Fellowship there was a perfect harmony
  18. 0:55among themselves and with all of nature
  19. 1:00they were to live obedient to God's will
  20. 1:04in other words they were not to decide
  21. 1:07for themselves what was right and wrong
  22. 1:10or what was evil or what was good rather
  23. 1:14it was God who decided that for
  24. 1:19them the tree of knowledge of Good and
  25. 1:21Evil represented that unique Divine
  26. 1:24prerogative to establish Good and
  27. 1:28Evil to say that the fruit of that tree
  28. 1:31was forbidden them is to say that that
  29. 1:35the power to decide good and evil was
  30. 1:39forbidden that rested to God not with
  31. 1:44them to eat of that fruit was a pride an
  32. 1:47act of Pride and
  33. 1:52Disobedience it was as if they
  34. 1:55said we want to decide on our own what's
  35. 1:58Good and Evil
  36. 2:01don't worry about it
  37. 2:03God we understand that that's your
  38. 2:05prerogative but we want to also have
  39. 2:08ownership of
  40. 2:11that we will disobey God's Will and
  41. 2:13establish our own will as
  42. 2:18Supreme that's the first
  43. 2:20sin
  44. 2:22pride pride and
  45. 2:26Disobedience what was the first
  46. 2:28consequence to sin
  47. 2:32separation
  48. 2:34alienation from God on their
  49. 2:39part this is where we pick up the story
  50. 2:42from today on this Sunday the immediate
  51. 2:45aftermath of that first
  52. 2:48sin the first thing they did was what
  53. 2:51after they had sinned they went and hid
  54. 2:58themselves they hid themselves
  55. 3:00separating themselves from God
  56. 3:01reflecting the first consequence of
  57. 3:04sin and we have this moving little
  58. 3:07dialogue between God and Adam God comes
  59. 3:10to walk with them in the
  60. 3:13garden but Adam is nowhere to be
  61. 3:16found God calls out where are
  62. 3:20you this is not to suggest of course
  63. 3:22that God didn't know where Adam was God
  64. 3:25did not lose Adam rather Adam became
  65. 3:29lost
  66. 3:30through
  67. 3:32sin what follows here is the rest of the
  68. 3:35Genesis narrative in a downward spiral
  69. 3:38into a deeper and deeper sin you've
  70. 3:42heard the the phrase sin is a slippery
  71. 3:47slope that easy fellowship with God is
  72. 3:51gone that perfect relationship between
  73. 3:54God and Adam and Eve and creation is
  74. 3:57destroyed it is fractured
  75. 4:00suffering and death now become part of
  76. 4:05humanity in this pable state Jesus
  77. 4:09Christ comes to our
  78. 4:13rescue what is the great Christian
  79. 4:18Proclamation that while pride and
  80. 4:20Disobedience of Adam brought death to
  81. 4:24humanity the humility and Obedience of
  82. 4:28Christ brought
  83. 4:32life Adam and Eve though they were in
  84. 4:34the form of man regarded equality with
  85. 4:38God something to be grasped at I want to
  86. 4:41be like you
  87. 4:44God that's why they did that's what they
  88. 4:47did grasping the fruit they wanted the
  89. 4:50Divine prerogative to determine what's
  90. 4:53right and wrong what's good and evil for
  91. 4:57themselves they did not want to humble
  92. 5:00to the Divine will but in their pride
  93. 5:03decided to follow their own will in
  94. 5:07Disobedience I know what's best I
  95. 5:11decide in contrast as St Paul memorably
  96. 5:15tells us Jesus Christ though he was in
  97. 5:17the form of God did not regard equality
  98. 5:22with God something to be
  99. 5:25grasped rather he humbled himself taking
  100. 5:29on human flesh and through his obedience
  101. 5:32to the father's will cancels our sins
  102. 5:36sealed the breach between God and man
  103. 5:39and he restores the Friendship back a
  104. 5:42friendship that was
  105. 5:45lost pride and Disobedience and its
  106. 5:49consequences are healed through the
  107. 5:52humility and Obedience of
  108. 5:55Christ Jesus Christ through his
  109. 5:58obedience on the cross cross reverses
  110. 6:01Adam's
  111. 6:04Disobedience both of those happened in a
  112. 6:06garden by the way in Eden Adam said to
  113. 6:09God not your will God but my will be
  114. 6:13done and in Gethsemane Jesus says not my
  115. 6:16will but your will be
  116. 6:20done something I've seen lately more and
  117. 6:23more is this misunderstanding of our
  118. 6:26role the role of our conscience
  119. 6:31that misunderstanding sounds something
  120. 6:33like this there's something I want to do
  121. 6:37and even though God even though God has
  122. 6:39said it's a sin I don't think it's a
  123. 6:43sin in fact I think it's good for me to
  124. 6:46do
  125. 6:47this I think that there's nothing wrong
  126. 6:50in in doing what I want to do and how I
  127. 6:53want to do it I'm not hurting anyone or
  128. 6:56maybe if I am I don't mean to really
  129. 6:59hurt them
  130. 7:01so my conscience is clear I'm going to
  131. 7:02go ahead and do it anyway because I get
  132. 7:05to decide what's right and wrong what's
  133. 7:07good and
  134. 7:08evil sounds a lot like Adam and Eve
  135. 7:11doesn't
  136. 7:13it our tendency in powerful temptation
  137. 7:16is similar to theirs to decide for
  138. 7:18ourselves what is good and evil right
  139. 7:20and wrong without regard to God's
  140. 7:25will but remember the role of our
  141. 7:27conscience is to apply the moral law not
  142. 7:30to create
  143. 7:32it our conscience can never lead us to
  144. 7:35Disobedience and
  145. 7:37sin that would separate us from God and
  146. 7:39only lead us to be lost
  147. 7:43again to take up the spiritual battle
  148. 7:45against sin is to struggle to conform
  149. 7:48our Wills to the will of God and this is
  150. 7:50something I mentioned at the beginning
  151. 7:51of mass ordinary time is about
  152. 7:54structuring our lives to be better to
  153. 7:56seek Holiness to seek out those things
  154. 7:59that are not of God those things that
  155. 8:01distract us and alienate us from a way
  156. 8:05of the the way of the
  157. 8:07faith to take up the spiritual battle
  158. 8:10against sin is to struggle to conform
  159. 8:12our will to the will of God to join our
  160. 8:16obedience to that of
  161. 8:18Christ that's the task of every
  162. 8:21Christian
  163. 8:23disciple Jesus tells us very clearly in
  164. 8:26the gospel if you want to be my family
  165. 8:28if you want to be with me if you want me
  166. 8:30to recognize you as my mother my brother
  167. 8:33my sister you got to do the will of the
  168. 8:37father to obey the will of God are his
  169. 8:41own brothers and sisters and
  170. 8:44mothers so my brothers and sisters the
  171. 8:47Lord is teaching us a very important
  172. 8:49lesson today on this
  173. 8:51Sunday to look at our lives and to see
  174. 8:54where is pride affecting our
  175. 8:56relationship where is pride affecting
  176. 8:59our our relationship with
  177. 9:02God we must never forget that obedience
  178. 9:05and humility have the power to transform
  179. 9:08the world around us it can transform our
  180. 9:11relationships our our marriages the
  181. 9:14relationships we have with our children
  182. 9:16with our
  183. 9:17co-workers just as Christ was obedience
  184. 9:20transformed the course of human
  185. 9:23history we can change the way that
  186. 9:26people are around us
  187. 9:29to un to unite our humility and
  188. 9:32obedience to the father's will with that
  189. 9:35of Christ is to reap with him a harvest
  190. 9:38of eternal life because that's the
  191. 9:42goal and that is the fruit that we
  192. 9:44should all be reaching out to grasp amen
