Full transcript
- 0:00Julia Caesar act one scene two is what
- 0:04we are going to begin and we will do
- 0:06this particular scene in four parts
- 0:08because it's a longest scene and there
- 0:10are certain parts that need lot of
- 0:12detailed explanation which is precisely
- 0:15what we do here on S SWS to ensure that
- 0:18the line by line explanation is truly a
- 0:21line by line explanation you get a very
- 0:24clear idea about what each character is
- 0:27saying
- 0:28okay
- 0:32B okay so uh this particular scene is
- 0:36taking place at a public
- 0:38place flourish which means you know the
- 0:40sound of trumpets Julius Caesar enters
- 0:44upna hero now he has entered now you see
- 0:46the interesting part is that act one
- 0:48scene one I really like that scene
- 0:50because it kind of sets the tone for
- 0:53what is to follow in scene two we are
- 0:55not introduced to Caesar but Caesar
- 0:58there's a lot of talk about about Julius
- 1:00Caesar the element of political
- 1:03insecurity and jealousy that I spoke
- 1:05about in the first video in detail okay
- 1:07so here we will kind of get the reasons
- 1:10and the whole thing will get fleshed out
- 1:12much more in act 1 scene two you'll get
- 1:15much more idea about why marulas and
- 1:17flavas spoke the way they did in act one
- 1:21scene one okay so say you are going to
- 1:24get to connect the dots juliia Caesar in
- 1:26that sense is a major political
- 1:30discourse and it gives you an idea and
- 1:32actually many of the elements while I
- 1:35Was preparing the notes I realized that
- 1:37many of the elements that are spoken
- 1:40about in juliia Caesar are actually
- 1:42relevant even to the politics of today
- 1:45be in India or anywhere in the world
- 1:47okay there is Mark Anthony who is juliia
- 1:50Caesar's close friend uh calponia who is
- 1:53the wife of juliia Caesar pora who is
- 1:56the wife of Brutus Brutus Cesaro
- 2:00this is DCs Brutus Brutus sist I mean
- 2:03these are all these are all U uh
- 2:07Senators of Rome okay so Kasa and a
- 2:11great crowd following among them is
- 2:13suser suser is someone who makes
- 2:16prediction who makes who who is able to
- 2:20tell about the future okay so Caesar
- 2:23calls out to his wife and Kasa says
- 2:26peace ho Caesar speaks Caesar again
- 2:29calls out to CIA and calonia says I'm
- 2:32here my Lord and Caesar says I want you
- 2:35to stand directly because you see it is
- 2:39that Festival which is going on which is
- 2:41to celebrate Purity and fertility in the
- 2:43month of February in Rome so that is
- 2:46what is essentially taking place and
- 2:49they are all Anthony in particular is
- 2:51dressed in the attire for a traditional
- 2:54foot race which is part of this
- 2:57particular Festival okay the Luper race
- 3:01now Caesar asked caloria to stand
- 3:05directly in an Antony's way now anony
- 3:08and Antonius both are used by
- 3:10Shakespeare alternately so don't get
- 3:12confused they mean the same person okay
- 3:14don't get
- 3:16confused no Anthony and Antonius mean
- 3:20the same person Shakespeare himself has
- 3:22used it differently okay when he does
- 3:24run his course when he's running that
- 3:27particular race and then he calls out to
- 3:29and
- 3:30so basically why is he telling this to
- 3:33calonia calonia did not have Caesar and
- 3:36calonia did not have any children as our
- 3:39elders say okay we'll come to
- 3:44um okay to touch he's telling Anthony to
- 3:47touch Calia because as our elders say
- 3:51the infertile woman the barren woman who
- 3:53does not have any children I find this
- 3:55extremely sexist way of putting it okay
- 3:58I somehow I don't like it uh the
- 4:00infertile woman when the infertile woman
- 4:03is touched during this particular holy
- 4:05race Chase meaning a holy R let me keep
- 4:09marking it for
- 4:15that you can look at the notes or in any
- 4:19case uh keep making notes in your uh on
- 4:23the side of the book that's always the
- 4:24best way shake off their sterile curse
- 4:27that is shake off the curse of sterility
- 4:30of not bearing children so he believes
- 4:33that since Anthony is going to be taking
- 4:35part in that race and while he's running
- 4:37if he touches calponia the two touch
- 4:39each other I mean he touches calonia
- 4:42that will actually transform some of the
- 4:45positive energy this is a Superstition
- 4:47that it will transform some of the
- 4:49positive energy to calonia and that will
- 4:51shake off her curse of sterility they
- 4:54believe he believed that it was a curse
- 4:57so it kind of gives you an idea into the
- 5:00kind of personality that Julius Caesar
- 5:02is andasi here he's a bit superstitious
- 5:05he believes in these kind of uh things
- 5:09which are not really uh confirmed by any
- 5:11kind of scientific banking Anthony says
- 5:15I will remember when Caesar says do this
- 5:17it is performed he says when Caesar says
- 5:20something needs to be done it will be
- 5:22done it is done this line again tells
- 5:27you two different things a to
- 5:30uh about Caesar's personality when
- 5:32Caesar says something needs to be done
- 5:34it has to be done in Rome okay so it
- 5:37kind of makes him at an exalted stature
- 5:41that he is of that particular
- 5:44status B because Anthony and Caesar are
- 5:48very close friends okay so in the theme
- 5:52of friendship these kind of lines are
- 5:54useful because when Caesar says
- 5:56something Anthony will ensure that that
- 5:59it will be done be it a small thing or
- 6:02be it something more significant and
- 6:04this is something which will play out
- 6:05much more after Caesar's assassination
- 6:08in the latter half of the play so please
- 6:11remember this particular line This is
- 6:13significant
- 6:16okay set on and leave no ceremony out so
- 6:21U he says that you know just go on and
- 6:24do not forget to leave out any ritual
- 6:27now let me tell you some background
- 6:30interesting and Cesar it's very
- 6:32interesting because all this actually
- 6:34happened in history and Shakespeare has
- 6:36used taken out all that material
- 6:39Shakespeare has taken all that material
- 6:42and used his own dramatic Ingenuity to
- 6:45kind of make it into a politically
- 6:48relevant kind of a play now Caesar
- 6:50believes in these superstitions which
- 6:52are associated with the lupal festival
- 6:55and this particular race that is uh
- 6:58conducted during this particular
- 6:59Festival in the month of February which
- 7:01is associated with the theme of Purity
- 7:04in Rome okay now it was celebrated as a
- 7:08Roman festive month of purification now
- 7:11Caesar hoped that this would result in a
- 7:14air that is he would get a child as a
- 7:17result of this so it showed that he was
- 7:20concerned about his
- 7:25succession this is one aspect that you
- 7:28need to bear in mind the second thing is
- 7:31that I'll tell you something more
- 7:32interesting now you will think that did
- 7:33Caesar not have any children well he did
- 7:36have one legitimate biological child I'm
- 7:39talking I'm using the word
- 7:41legitimate uh because there are reports
- 7:44that he had one uh child which was not
- 7:47born out of who was not born out of
- 7:49bedlock okay so one legitimate
- 7:51biological child who was a daughter okay
- 7:54from his first wife okay calunia was his
- 7:57third wife okay so
- 8:00and she was the wife when he was
- 8:01assassinated so just remember this I
- 8:04mean this is for your general knowledge
- 8:06also so the lupal runners what they
- 8:08would do is to they would carry goat
- 8:10skin okay which they would stuck across
- 8:13along the course and it was supposed to
- 8:15make men verile and women fertile okay
- 8:18that was the belief associated with this
- 8:21particular race okay now you have
- 8:27understood then there is a flourish of
- 8:29trumpets once again and suser calls out
- 8:32to Caesar suser is the old man who calls
- 8:36out to Caesar Caesar who calls because
- 8:39it's a large crowd flavas and marus in
- 8:41act 1 scene one tried to ensure that
- 8:43there was not much of a crowd which had
- 8:45gathered they were clearly unsuccessful
- 8:48in their attempts
- 8:50okay they could not do what they wanted
- 8:53to do Casa says b every noise be still
- 8:56peace yet again he says let everyone be
- 8:57quiet because we want to know who is
- 8:59calling calling out to Caesar right so
- 9:04um yeah so Caesar says who is it in the
- 9:07press that is in the crowd press
- 9:11means who is it in the
- 9:22press okay who is it in the Press who
- 9:26calls that on me that calls on me okay
- 9:29this is important press essentially
- 9:32referring to the crowd I hear a tongue
- 9:34Shiller than all the music there's a lot
- 9:37of music which is being played Beach
- 9:39he's able to hear one noise calling out
- 9:41Caesar his name so he wants to know the
- 9:44identity of that person who is calling
- 9:47out his name okay and he says cry Caesar
- 9:50speak Caesar is turned to hear that I am
- 9:52here I here attention B who is speaking
- 9:54who is calling out my name s says beare
- 9:58the IDS of March okay Idis Ides IDs of
- 10:03March okay uh which means essentially
- 10:06talking about the 15th of March March
- 10:1215 please beware beware means he's
- 10:16giving a warning what man is that right
- 10:20so he's saying who is saying that a suit
- 10:23bits you beware the IDS of March so he's
- 10:25saying I am a suser I am someone who can
- 10:28predict the future and I am telling you
- 10:31to beware of what could happen on the
- 10:3315th day of March okay this is happening
- 10:37when this is happening in February so
- 10:40he's talking about a prediction in just
- 10:43less than 4 weeks time okay Caesar says
- 10:48set him before me let me see his face
- 10:51Casas says uh fellow come from the
- 10:54throng look upon Caesar so he says so um
- 10:59he he says step out of the crowd throng
- 11:01here means crowd again so he says
- 11:06word press okay so press and throng both
- 11:09mean uh crowd look upon Caesar face
- 11:12Caesar and Caesar says what says Thou to
- 11:15me now speak once again suer says beware
- 11:18the ID of March Caesar says he's a
- 11:20dreamer let us leave him pass now so he
- 11:25says he's just a dreamer so let's ignore
- 11:27him so what does it show he does not pay
- 11:30any attention to this particular
- 11:32prediction made by the susay important
- 11:35okay now susay prediction that comes
- 11:39true actually is a pointer towards what
- 11:43is a pointer towards fate that something
- 11:46is certain to happen we may dismiss it
- 11:50it as Superstition in this case it comes
- 11:52true so obviously he's Endor with some
- 11:54kind of an ability to predict the future
- 11:58or to warn about the future okay when
- 12:01Caesar says he's a dreamer he's
- 12:04basically saying that he's speaking
- 12:06nonsense so Caesar who otherwise is
- 12:09known to be superstitious in this case
- 12:11does not believe so and why he doesn't
- 12:14believe so the Perhaps it is it comes
- 12:17out of a sense of arrogance that nothing
- 12:20can happen to me who is he to say warn
- 12:23me about a particular date nothing can
- 12:25happen to me I'm Julius Caesar who has
- 12:27won so many battles who is completely in
- 12:30control of this Roman Republic okay and
- 12:33I want to be the ruler so there is a
- 12:35sense of arrogance which kind of
- 12:38envelops Julius Caesar's mind while he's
- 12:41dismissing him as just a dreamer so if
- 12:44you get a question about you know
- 12:46explain why he says he's a dreamer it
- 12:49comes basically out of J juliia Caesar's
- 12:52own sense of self-importance and
- 12:55entitlement that I am a ruler what is
- 12:57there for me to be wared about okay so
- 13:00he's dismissive of him even though
- 13:02otherwise Caesar as I said is known to
- 13:05be superstitious asking Anthony to touch
- 13:07calunia because he wants her to be uh
- 13:09bearing children for him okay now while
- 13:12he lends the suit and ear it's not as
- 13:14though he's impolite he makes it a point
- 13:17that the person who is calling out to
- 13:19him is brought forward and he's able to
- 13:22come face to face with that old sser and
- 13:25hear what he has to say so he's not a
- 13:28rude kind of a ruler in that sense he's
- 13:30a polite person who knows the basic
- 13:33curtsies of
- 13:35governance okay but at the same time the
- 13:38second point one is a sense of arrogance
- 13:40which seems to be there that's one way
- 13:42of interpreting it the other thing is
- 13:44that he does not think he's vulnerable
- 13:46to any kind of
- 13:56harm Julius caar suffers from that kind
- 14:00of an arrogance and the fact that he
- 14:02does not think he's vulnerable why
- 14:04because he's just returned from a war he
- 14:07just killed I mean not killed defeated
- 14:09pompe Sons one of them was killed he
- 14:11just defeated pompe Sons so in that
- 14:14sense his biggest enemy who was there
- 14:16within the Roman Republic pompe was
- 14:18defeated in 48 BC and now pompe sons
- 14:21have been defeated so in that sense he
- 14:22thinks himself as invinci invincible and
- 14:26here is a person who is asking me to bew
- 14:29of a particular day in the month of
- 14:31March so this whole thing is an
- 14:34important element in the role of fate in
- 14:38this particular play by William
- 14:39Shakespeare okay so we will pause here
- 14:42as far as this first part is concerned
- 14:44because this kind of sets the tone the
- 14:47second part is very long it's a long
- 14:49kind of a dialogue dialogue between
- 14:52brutas and cases and he tries to
- 14:54convince him that Caesar is not someone
- 14:57who is very Desir terrible for Rome
- 15:01actually more for themselves because
- 15:03they're all feeling threatened by the
- 15:05rise of Julia season that we will read
- 15:08and understand in part two of act one
- 15:12scene two the part two explanation video
- 15:14so I hope you have understood this the
- 15:17basic setting of the play because the
- 15:19basic setting of the play is as a result
- 15:21of this prediction which has been made
- 15:23by this suits okay so now I will see you
- 15:27in act 1 scene 2 explanation video
- 15:29number two as I said we'll be doing this
- 15:31in four parts okay T bye-bye be
- 15:35good
- 15:37but okay byebye
