- 0:00one thing Ben beer once said to me was
- 0:04if you use photography you should always
- 0:07reflect the
- 0:08media
- 0:10and if the image um and this reflection
- 0:14should be represented in in the
- 0:17photograph when I then continued working
- 0:21at the Art Academy I had the idea of
- 0:23taking photographs of my friends and
- 0:25colleagues there and I also yes I wanted
- 0:29to do that in a
- 0:30very or quite objective and Sak style
- 0:35yeah I wanted to make 100 portraits to
- 0:38show to some aliens how humankind looks
- 0:44like but people were pointing to the
- 0:48port and say saying oh that's that's a
- 0:51nice photo of Petra that's a nice uh oh
- 0:54that's hind that's Peter and I always
- 0:57had to tell them no that's not SS that's
- 1:00not P that's not uh Pia that's a
- 1:03photograph of them so I had to realize
- 1:08that people look through the photograph
- 1:10and they did not get that they are
- 1:12looking at a photograph but they ignor
- 1:14the medium thinking they are
- 1:17looking uh into
- 1:20reality and it's not exactly because of
- 1:25this but um in 1986 I decided to do the
- 1:30portraits in a very big size the biggest
- 1:32size that was available from um yeah the
- 1:35Kodak
- 1:36paper which is 1 M
- 1:3980
- 1:41and that help really helped a lot
- 1:44because now
- 1:45people did not no more said oh that's
- 1:50Petra they said oh this is a big
- 1:52photograph of Petra so it was the first
- 1:55time they realized that they are looking
- 1:57at a photograph I think with a big
- 2:01format started the Emancipation
- 2:05emancipation of Photography in
- 2:08Contemporary Art because uh those
- 2:11photographs they had such a physical
- 2:14presence and they delivered a pictorial
- 2:19pictorial quality that yeah a painting
- 2:23cannot
- 2:25offer my belief in in photography
- 2:29capturing
- 2:30reality um I realized that maybe that's
- 2:34that's not all of the truth I think the
- 2:38camera is just a machine and of course
- 2:41it records reality but it's records the
- 2:44the
- 2:45reality the person behind the camera
- 2:48wants to
- 2:49point and
- 2:51so I think even the most objective photo
- 2:54photograph is subject photography and I
- 2:58was a bit bored of art photography and I
- 3:02was thinking of what what is the most
- 3:04objective photogra photography what
- 3:06could that be and I I was always very
- 3:09interested in
- 3:10scientific or medical
- 3:14photographs
- 3:15and I then thought the most objective
- 3:19photography must be stop photography
- 3:23because
- 3:25here me as an author I cannot manipulate
- 3:29anything
- 3:30because those things are so far away I
- 3:32cannot arrange them I can only Rec
- 3:35record
- 3:36them but at the same time I had to
- 3:39realize that even though I'm
- 3:42professionally educated and I had a
- 3:44quite professional equipment I wasn't
- 3:46able to take these
- 3:48photographs with all the light and uh
- 3:51air
- 3:52pollution this wouldn't work would be
- 3:55very very bad
- 3:57quality so
- 4:00in with the star photographs it was the
- 4:03first time that I had to say or give up
- 4:09authorship and I had to give it up
- 4:11because I just wasn't able to yeah take
- 4:14the photograph by myself you probably
- 4:16already saw that I'm much interested in
- 4:20structure the
- 4:22distribution I continued that with my
- 4:25serious jpex I had the idea doing the
- 4:28jpex when I was download loing images
- 4:30from the internet
- 4:32I sometimes
- 4:34saw
- 4:36beautiful small details in images that I
- 4:40downloaded and in the very beginning I
- 4:42did not know how that happened until I
- 4:45realized this is the structure of the
- 4:47compression you can
- 4:49choose uh the degree of
- 4:53compression and then you get this kind
- 4:55of artifact in the images
- 4:59so what I had to do is looking for
- 5:03attractive images then I calculated them
- 5:05down into a size of about 18
- 5:08180k and then I compressed them in the
- 5:11worst
- 5:12quality and one of the first images that
- 5:15I worked on was um a photograph of um
- 5:20September 11th
- 5:222001 uh I was here in New York in at
- 5:26that day and I was uh down on Canal
- 5:29Street
- 5:30and I saw the two towers
- 5:32collapsing and I had my camera with me a
- 5:35small camera and I took yeah stupidly
- 5:38enough I
- 5:39took a photograph or took photographs
- 5:43and when I came back to Germany to dled
- 5:46off um there was nothing on the
- 5:49film and I don't know until now whether
- 5:52it was just the battery or whether it's
- 5:55maybe it's the the X-ray so I I really
- 5:58started searching for for images like
- 6:00crazy in the internet and yeah I found a
- 6:03lot of those
- 6:04images and then I realized that the
- 6:07internet um is a
- 6:11incredible uh source for Distributing
- 6:15images I my idea then was to use this
- 6:19kind of compression as the
- 6:23representation
- 6:25represent of images in the
- 6:28internet uh I print them in a quite big
- 6:33size because the the nice thing is um so
- 6:37this work is also about perception if
- 6:39you look at the these photographs from a
- 6:42very from a far away side um side like
- 6:46about 10 or 15 M you think you're
- 6:49looking at a a real photograph and then
- 6:52if you come close to the image starts at
- 6:55about 5 m you recognize the artifact
- 6:58this 8 by
- 7:00eight uh pixel structure which makes the
- 7:04image very paintly even though it's
- 7:07stupid
- 7:08to use the word painting in uh terms of
- 7:12pixel
