3. 0:05journalist Michele Gillen begins to
4. 0:07question the fairness of the original
5. 0:09verdict she is one of the select few
6. 0:11granted access to interview Aileen
7. 0:13Wuornos in prison
8. 0:15getting this interview with her was
9. 0:17considered a big scoop and so when I sat
10. 0:20down with her I felt my obligation is to
11. 0:23do the best I can to have her story
12. 0:27coming I'm sick and tired of those men
13. 0:29out there thing and they control us and
14. 0:31do whatever they damn well please with
15. 0:32our bodies and think they can get away
16. 0:34with it truth my truth then we would
17. 0:37pick that up and investigate I am
18. 0:39innocent
19. 0:40it was self-defense because her whole
20. 0:44thing was nobody will believe me Michele
21. 0:46everybody just sees me as this
22. 0:48prostitute and nobody will take
23. 0:52seriously my claim of self-defense
24. 0:57she continued to repeat for me about how
25. 1:00she claimed Richard Mallory said you do
26. 1:03what I say or I will kill you you do
27. 1:08what I say or I will hurt you like I've
28. 1:11hurt other women and as she continued to
29. 1:17tell that story to me I kept saying to
30. 1:19myself the picture that Aileen Wuornos
31. 1:23is painting for me of this man he is in
32. 1:28such direct contrast chillingly
33. 1:31different to what the state explained
34. 1:34that she snuffed out the life of such an
35. 1:37upstanding citizen I started having this
36. 1:41feeling
37. 1:41there was like poem like gosh I think
38. 1:43she's telling the truth
39. 1:45we need to investigate this so I get a
40. 1:49call from NBC's Michele Gillen
41. 1:51and she told me about Aileen Wuornos it
42. 1:54says to me I need me a Sherlock Holmes
43. 1:56do I want to work on this case and I got
44. 1:58oh my god in the show of course I want
45. 2:00to work on this case this was my kind of
46. 2:03case the first thing I did is I told
47. 2:05Michelle I needed the trial transcripts
48. 2:07and I began to read through them I find
49. 2:09this deposition of Richard Mallory's
50. 2:12girlfriend and this was not used at
51. 2:14trial and she talks about Richard being
52. 2:16in prison in Maryland I started calling
53. 2:19every prison in Maryland and don't find
54. 2:21any jail or prison that Richard could
55. 2:24have been in and then I was talking to
56. 2:27the operator she says but I had this
57. 2:29place called the Patuxent institution
58. 2:30the criminally insane
59. 2:32so they gave me the phone number and I
60. 2:34called I asked the public information
61. 2:35officer did you ever have an inmate
62. 2:38named Richard Mallard she said let me go
63. 2:39pull some records she came back about
64. 2:41tennis later said yeah he was here for
65. 2:43ten years I went what
66. 2:46she said reason Richard Mallory was at
67. 2:49Patuxent is that when he was 19 Richard
68. 2:52Mallory get attempted to rape a girl or
69. 2:54at least she thought she was about to be
70. 2:56raped and he was arrested for that and I
71. 2:59went what she said oh yeah he was 10
72. 3:01years you know while he was here he
73. 3:02attempted to rape one of the nurses and
74. 3:05in the report she talks about in using a
75. 3:07ligature of something around her neck I
76. 3:09went oh my god cuz that's exactly what
77. 3:12Eileen had talked about that he put
78. 3:14something around her neck I said this
79. 3:16this is unbelievable I was so excited
80. 3:19when I tried to call Michelle
81. 3:20I couldn't even dial the numbers that's
82. 3:22not somebody who never got a parking
83. 3:24ticket
84. 3:24that's somebody who with a sex crime and
85. 3:27if the judge had overlooked that the
86. 3:29state attorneys had overlooked that
87. 3:31flora Department law enforcement
88. 3:33overlooked it this proved without
89. 3:34question Eileen did not get a fair trial
