5:53about you? How long would July feel? I
5:56feel like July has felt every bit as
5:58long as the 26, 27-ish days that we are
6:02into it so far. Went to the beach for
6:04the first time.

6:11So, we built the show up for 5 years. It
6:12was time to take a little bit of a
6:13vacation, hit some media days last week

6:24start the show's season next week.
6:27But, July has been very um as you can
6:29see, it's been very eclectic for me.

6:33gotten what you've needed out of that
6:355-year stint and get a little break and
6:37you look like you're ready for another 5
6:38years straight. Dude, one thing that I
6:40have a hard time with, vacations. Like I
6:43always go we'll go down to the beach
6:44like you did. We'll travel to Canada
6:46where my wife is from. We'll take the
6:47family and stuff like that and I do
6:48relax during those points. But, I don't
6:51know if you feel this way, but doing
6:52what Will and I do for a job 365, you
6:56kind of feel like you don't have to take
6:57a vacation. It's so much fun. Like
6:58there's points like I think when you get
7:00to that second week in February and the
7:02Super Bowl is there, you're like, "Wow,
7:03I could really use
7:0510 days without some football. 10 days
7:07at that point." It's crazy to say that
7:08now in July. But, do you ever feel that
7:10way doing what you've done and hearing
7:12you last time you were on the show doing
7:14the CBS
7:15to sitting in the car, talking to
7:17yourself, they walk in segments on the
7:18radio, you turn it down so you just kind
7:20of finish the segment and getting to
7:22that point now to where you are now,
7:23does it feel like you work or does it
7:25feel like, "Yo, this is awesome."
7:26>> It is a lot different if you do
7:28something you like to do for a living or
7:29if you love to do it for a living. Yeah,
7:31you don't you don't long for that 2-week
7:33stretch
7:34>> Right.
7:34>> uh the same way that maybe like I would
7:36have if I were working former jobs I
7:38used to work. That was that was
7:39horrible. That was like a mainstream
7:40media death march. Not even that, before
7:42that. Hey, at least in media, at least
7:44you're kind of covering what you love.
7:46Even if you're not doing it on your
7:47terms all the time. But this is
7:49it was mainly like when you're gone, if
7:51I'm gone 72 hours, okay. But anything
7:53beyond 3 days, you start to think what
7:56is this itch? Why are my kneecaps, why
7:58are my elbows feeling a little itchy?
7:59It's not just the pre-workout I just
8:00took. What is that? Well, it's kind of
8:02missing out cuz you've never taken a
8:0372-hour chunk and been silent about
8:06college football in the past half
8:07decade. So that that that's a little bit
8:10of a
8:11gotta gotta peel away sometimes. You
8:13gotta pop out on the deck, answer some
8:15emails, maybe fire some tweets off,
8:18check the YouTube analytics. Maybe post
8:20a short you had saved in drafts for a
8:22rainy day. That sort of thing.
8:24>> just put something out there to see if
8:25you still have it. Yeah. Do they
8:26remember? Do do people understand what's
8:29going to take place this fall or have
8:30they forgotten about me already?

8:52want to know that information. We're not
8:54that good at our shows. Well, I'm not
8:55good at the show. So what was your
8:57what was your thought process when you
8:58saw a crazy article come out about the
9:02legendary one of one Josh Pate who owns
9:04the the area of college football and is
9:07the next great thing. Plus Bussen with
9:09the Boys has their own show on ESPN.
9:11>> Well, I assume that you're talking about
9:13things that sort of semi broke last week
9:16in the rumor mill. You know how the
9:18internet and media can be. I'll just say
9:20this. I saw those reports just like you
9:22did.

9:23>> And I thought to myself, self,
9:24if there's validity to those reports,
9:27wow, what a concept.
9:29Wow, what a time those guys could have.
9:31>> Right.
9:32>> If those reports are real.
9:33>> Only if those reports are real.
9:35>> We understand how to qualify all reports
9:38with the word allegedly.
9:40There's a lot of hearsay. There's a lot
9:41of innuendo out there. But all I'm
9:43saying is college football is the number
9:46two sport in this country.
9:47And said network that the reports linked
9:52those three men to
9:54it's the biggest sports media network on
9:55the planet in the world. So if that
9:58sports media network conglomerate if you
10:00will behemoth were to lean more into
10:03college football
10:05it's got to be a win for America. Not
10:07just for the people involved. It's got
10:08to be a win for America.
10:10>> I mean my god, yeah. Like allegedly if
10:13this show were to take place, this would
10:15be the biggest win America seen in the
10:17last 250 years.

12:35the it's the build. The Friday is the
12:38shaking up of the Saturday Coke bottle
12:40and you can feel the pressure building.
12:43People coming into town, families, kids
12:45checking out of school early, let's hit
12:47the road. We got to get to the tailgate.
12:49We got to go see our friends that we see
12:51maybe eight weekends out of the year and
12:53you see that line of cars looks like red
12:56ants just marching into town at night. I
12:58want a show if this stuff's going to
13:00happen allegedly.

13:52remember being college and not to bring
13:53in frat boy culture into this, but a
13:54good position of frat boy culture is,
13:56sometimes the pregame is the best thing
13:58because it's the expectation, it's the
14:00excitement that takes place about what
14:02could possibly happen. And if there's a
14:04place, a family-friendly place that
14:06these line of red ants can take and come
14:08and park their cars right behind three
14:10gentlemen who get it, understand it, and
14:12love it.
14:13Get to talk about the expectation and
14:15the excitement of the next 24 hours. My
14:18god. I mean, talk about saving America,

23:14one of the best stories you've ever

23:17Josh Pate talking about his your
23:20grandfather being cremated.

23:24>> P Paw being cremated, wasn't able to
23:26make it, and then found out years and
23:28years later that that was
23:30>> Forgot I told you that.

23:35people were like commenting about it,

23:36>> It's not P Paw we heard about. This
23:38isn't Chattanooga, correct? Is that
23:39where it took place?
23:40>> I think it's like it's Tri-State
23:41Crematorium. It's either in extreme
23:44northern Georgia or extreme southern
23:45Tennessee. And so like very 30-second
23:48condensed version of this for those who
23:49didn't tune in, shame on you.

23:52>> P Paw passes away, good man. We lost him
23:55a long time ago. He wanted to get
23:57cremated. He wanted his ashes spread in
23:59the stream that he used to fish in up in
24:02the mountains in the Smokies. So we get
24:04him cremated, we go spread his ashes,
24:06not another word is said about it. We go
24:08years later, I come home from school one
24:10day, my mom braces me for some news
24:14that's come out, and all over every
24:17cable news network, everything, there's
24:18this huge scandal that's broken at a
24:20place called this Tri-State Crematorium,
24:23I think is what it was called, where
24:24they were just
24:26throwing bodies all over their property
24:28in sheds, in a lake, cuz their
24:30incinerator busted up, but they were
24:32still taking bodies in, and there's this
24:35I have learned since a huge
24:37multi-episode podcast dedicated to this.
24:39>> Since you told this story.
24:41>> the title of it, but I listened to it,
24:43and they did a really, really good job.
24:45So there you go, 2,000 bodies had been
24:46sent to Tri-State, and at some point
24:48that dude Ray Brent Marsh took over the
24:50business, and his business did not
24:52consist of burning the bodies and giving
24:54back the ashes. He was giving back
24:56ashes, we got ashes, but they were not
24:58Peepaw's ashes. So, we spread the ashes.
25:00Years later, they find Peepaw's body
25:03still intact, badly decomposed.
25:05>> Badly decomposed.
25:06>> On their property, in a shed. So, we had
25:09to get him re-cremated years later, and
25:12we went back and re-spread his ashes.
25:15>> Now, you've told this story before, but
25:16how many years later was this?
25:17>> Several years.

25:20>> God, how long does it take for a body to
25:21decompose?
25:22>> They could only So,
25:24>> I I feel like that's That should have
25:26been enough time to hit us with a
25:27skeleton, right?
25:28>> Well, here was the thing. He still had
25:30his toe tag on him.
25:31>> That's how they identified him.
25:32>> That was literally They didn't need to
25:34do the dental records thing, although I
25:35guess you could do dental records, but
25:36he's The body still had the toe tags.
25:38This was not very, very, uh,
25:40strategically, like, a well-calibrated
25:42operation. They would just like
25:44toss the bodies like garbage,
25:47uh, wherever they could toss them.
25:48>> Start a fire out back, yeah, take the
25:50ashes from that and put it in a jar.
25:51>> And here we have the, um, the process of
25:53body decomposition.
25:55Speaking of college football being right
25:56around the corner,
25:58Peepaw was, uh, past the 250-day mark
26:00there. Peepaw's down there at the
26:02bottom.
26:02>> Down there at the bottom.
26:03>> If you just If you just CGI the toe tag
26:05on that skeleton, that was Peepaw.
26:06>> That's kind of scary. Josh, man, do you
26:08believe in ghosts?
26:09>> I don't, but I believe that other people
26:12do believe in them.

26:15definitively do not believe in ghosts.
26:17>> I'm out on ghosts cuz uh there's a road
26:19called Smith Road where I grew up, and
26:21there was this Korean family. You can
26:23tell this is going to be good.

26:25>> Dad used to drive us to school every
26:27morning.
26:27>> he did.
26:28>> And we would drive past a house. There's
26:31a little Korean family. They were
26:32>> Just full of Koreans.
26:33>> always waiting for the bus. We would
26:34wave to them every morning. It's the
26:35It's one of those instances where we
26:37never knew their name,
26:38>> Mhm.
26:38>> but we kind of felt like we had a bond
26:40with them.

26:41>> The Koreans move away. The house just
26:43sits there.
26:44It never got moved into. There was a for
26:46sale sign, I kid you not, at this house
26:47for like 15 years. It never got moved
26:49into. The forest just swallowed the
26:51house.
26:52Now, most people didn't know the house
26:53was back there cuz even though it's only
26:55like 100 150 200 ft from the road, you
26:57can't see it cuz in Harris County,
26:59Georgia, the forest grows pretty thick.
27:02It's like a rainforest.
27:03>> Yeah.
27:04>> So, I grow up. I become like a teenager.
27:07I have a driver's license at that point
27:08and I think, wait a second. That house
27:11has got to still be back there. So, we
27:13started planning going back there.

27:17>> Me and some friends.
27:18>> You and your degenerate friends.
27:19>> inconsequential.

27:20>> They are not main characters in the
27:21story.

27:41doll looking things on all the walls.

27:47ever going to be a ghost, it would be in
27:49here.
27:51And nothing ever happened.

27:59>> I was I was ignorant. I we spent hours

28:09house ahead of time and then we would

42:11anybody else in the world. And I'd love
42:13to know your true opinion of my favorite
42:15school in the world.
42:17>> I think it all comes down to what your
42:18opinion is of your quarterback. It
42:19doesn't matter on opinion. It matters
42:21what your quarterback ends up becoming.
42:22There are two schools of thought out
42:24there, pretty divergent by the way. No
42:26one's on the fence with Bryce Underwood.
42:27It's either some of the rumors in spring
42:29were true and you're going to be in the
42:31market for a quarterback after this year
42:33because he's never going to fulfill his
42:34potential
42:35or path B or path A, whichever you want
42:38to call it, but it is divergent to the
42:40previous path, he just ends up being the
42:43man. And if he's the man, you got one of
42:45the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten,
42:46which means you got one of the best
42:47quarterbacks in college football. And
42:49then you tie a Kyle Whittingham style of
42:51play
42:52to that kind of talent at the
42:53quarterback position and it just becomes
42:55Utah on steroids, figuratively, and you
42:58can compete. It's not just Indiana,
43:00Oregon, Ohio State at tier one. It's
43:03make more room, add another chair at the
43:05table. Also, it would look like
43:08we keep getting better throughout the
43:09year. You know, we're scaling up
43:10throughout the year. What we were in
43:12week two and week three is not what we
43:14are in week nine and week 10.
43:16I
43:17you can tell me what you think. You're
43:18really dialed in there. I just don't
43:20want to lean into that until I see it.
43:22So, they're one of my believe it or see
43:25it to believe it kind of team this year.
43:27So,
43:29I have to tell you what I think. You
43:30said that, I'm going to do that. Here's
43:32where I live. I'm going to try to live
43:33in an unbiased path and then my clearly
43:35biased path. I wish it was a hat to
43:37differentiate which Taylor I'm going to
43:38go with. First, I'll go with the
43:39unbiased path. This season 100% relies
43:43on how much better Bryce Underwood has
43:46gotten.
43:47The roster is a top 25, top 15 roster in
43:50college football. The only other
43:51question mark on the roster right now
43:54seems to me the linebacker linebacker
43:55room. Cole Sullivan, he went to
43:58Oklahoma. He was one of our best
44:00linebackers. Lost a couple guys to the
44:01draft. Another individual just stopped
44:03playing a football altogether. He was
44:05the um kid that was at Nebraska and
44:07transferred to Michigan.
44:09So, when it comes to the wide receiver
44:11room, it's one of the best wide receiver
44:12rooms on paper that Michigan's had in a
44:15very long time.
44:15>> be underrated.
44:16>> Yeah. Uh Babalola, the left tackle. He
44:18was this five-star recruit, one of the
44:20highest-rated offensive lineman ever
44:21come to the University of Michigan. He
44:23was making absolute waves last camp
44:25before he did the injury. Unless he's
44:26you get him back, plus a whole group of
44:29guys that played together all of last
44:31year in various spots, but still play
44:33together, chemistry gets better. Reps
44:35with an offensive line makes you a
44:37better team. You have Jordan Marshall,
44:40Savion Hydar, who is the highest-rated
44:41running back in most recent years to
44:43commit. He's turning heads. I feel
44:45really good about what Bryce Underwood
44:49has around him.
44:50And it all depends on the game that
44:52brought up this entire topic, which is
44:54Oklahoma. Brent Venables, his defense,
44:56how complex they are. If he can have
44:58success against them, and Jason Beck can
45:01scheme up an actual game plan other than
45:03we'll just run it down the middle 50
45:05times and hopefully someone breaks one,
45:07then I think we're in a really good
45:08spot. But it really week two, we will
45:10know what the University of Michigan is,
45:13which is great.
45:14There's two There's two things is it's
45:17great because you find out exactly what
45:18your football team is right away. The
45:20bad part is if it's not what you want,
45:22it's like, "Well, it's going to be a
45:23tough year." That's going to take place.
45:25>> Do you find out in week two?
45:26>> I believe so, yes.

45:30a week two out of conference game in
45:32year one under a head coach?
45:35You think you know everything?

45:41right then and there if your team is a
45:43playoff caliber team.
45:45>> Playoff caliber team, but at that at
45:46that point, we we've got a 12-team
45:48field. So, at that point, we'll have 30
45:50playoff caliber teams, and then we start
45:52weeding it out. Pull up Michigan's
45:53schedule right quick.

45:55>> Okay, but what I'm saying is let's say
45:56they lose 17 to 13 in week two.

46:01predicting it, but let's say that
46:02happens. You're telling me that there's

46:06Michigan, to round into form around
46:09early October?
46:12You're telling me that can't happen?

46:14time we got Iowa that comes in, we we
46:17win that one dog fight, we win that one,
46:19we go to Minnesota, we win that one.
46:20You're telling me by the time Penn State
46:22comes in, you couldn't see a world where
46:24you're four and one, you're undefeated
46:26in conference play, and here we go,
46:28we've hit reset on the season, and we
46:30got a season coming up. We got a second
46:32season coming up of Penn State, Indiana,
46:35Oregon, Ohio State, and if we go three
46:38and one in that stretch and we get two
46:41of them at home, is that right? Yeah,
46:42two of them at home. If we go three and
46:43one in that stretch,
46:44we're in the playoff. If we go two and
46:47two, depending on how the dominoes fall,
46:48we're on the fringes of playoff
46:50contention, especially especially if one
46:53of those losses to Oklahoma ends up
46:55being a loss to a playoff team
46:57themselves. All I'm saying is I don't
46:59think we need to know everything we need
46:59to know in week two.

47:10To me, it's all about how Bryce

47:17Because if you're a year two quarterback
47:18who didn't have a quarterback coach the
47:20year before, has all the talent in the
47:21world. Now, Coy Detmer Jr., who's the
47:23quarterback coach, comes from Utah.
47:24Beautiful mustache on the individual, by
47:26the way. If this kid's
47:28keeping his head up, if he's being a
47:30leader to his guys, if you see him
47:31making big throws and like last year
47:33with the I think Michigan had were top
47:35three in drops in college football. If
47:37those guys are making those drops, now
47:39I'm looking to a place where it's like,
47:40"Okay, get to Penn State,
47:43I have
47:44a
47:45a interesting feel about Penn State that
47:46we can get into in a little bit, but
47:49you get to that game, yeah, it's a whole
47:50new season. But if you drop to Oklahoma,
47:52who on paper is not as good as they were
47:54last year,
47:56and you're playing Indiana, the reigning
47:57national champ, Oregon, who has their
47:59best roster since Dan Lanning's been
48:00there, and Ohio State, which pains me to
48:03say, always reloads.
48:05You're not going to I I think what we
48:06saw last year is you're not going to be
48:08a nine and three team and make the
48:09playoffs.
48:09>> I'm not just granting that Oklahoma on
48:11paper is worse than they were last year.

48:41wait for, cuz I don't care about bowl
48:43season. I care about regular season
48:45matchups. We rarely ever get them. But
48:47this is the kind of year where we're
48:48going to get several SEC-Big Ten like
48:51comparably seeded matchups, where I get
48:55an idea early on, how does this
48:56conference stack up against the other
48:58conference? There's a game in Nashville
49:00that's not Big Ten-SEC. It's ACC-SEC
49:03week one. It's Ole Miss-Louisville. That
49:05game's going to go a long way, even
49:07though it's week one, of shaping the
49:09conversation
49:11come playoff selection time, when you're
49:13asking whose conference deserves benefit
49:15of doubt, whose conference deserves one
49:17more seat at the table. All these games
49:19are happening in the first couple weeks
49:20of the year. And they're going to matter
49:22so much three months later when we're
49:25trying to decide
49:26whose strength of schedule really
49:28impresses me more or strength of record.
49:29Whose strength of record really
49:30impresses me more. In case you can't
49:32tell, it's going to be a great year.

49:37they really mean as much as they do when
49:39we get into November and selection

50:44out. That's kind of where where I sit
50:45with that.

51:02you're already playing at a high enough
51:04level to win that kind of game in week
51:05two, well, then we'll be on the way home
51:08and you'll be selling me on the
51:10potential of 11 and 1, the potential of
51:1212 and 0.

1:06:26I'm saying. I'm saying, if we're having
1:06:28to worry about week four, this entire
1:06:30conversation's off the rails anyway.

1:07:19where the SEC is right now,
1:07:22do you think, just in general,
1:07:24that there's somebody in that conference
1:07:26that can dethrone the Big Ten
1:07:28from a national championship
1:07:30standpoint?
1:07:31>> My feel in July
1:07:33is I see one roster
1:07:35that looks like it measures up with the
1:07:37best rosters in the Big Ten.
1:07:39>> Mhm.
1:07:39>> And that's Texas.
1:07:40>> Yeah.
1:07:40>> Problem there is there's no proof of
1:07:42concept with Texas. I know Ohio State
1:07:45can do it. I know Indiana can do it.
1:07:47Texas' equivalent in the Big Ten is
1:07:50Oregon.
1:07:51Loaded up with talent, high-caliber
1:07:53coaching staffs, big, high-profile head
1:07:56coaches, but thus far haven't gotten the
1:07:58job done in post-season.
1:07:59>> Mhm.
1:08:00>> So, I I I think it would be crazy if
1:08:02they ended up meeting in the national
1:08:03title game this year. But, I think um I
1:08:06just came from SEC media days last week.
1:08:08So, you know, you got the talking point
1:08:09of well, how do you measure a
1:08:11conference's strength? Is it the depth
1:08:12of overall quality? Is it how many good
1:08:14teams are at the top? And to me, best is
1:08:17comprised of how many
1:08:18championship-caliber
1:08:20teams do you have? Big Ten's got more.
1:08:22That means Big Ten's better right now.
1:08:24If you want to do a strength of schedule
1:08:25analysis, okay, that's different, but
1:08:27schedules aren't teams. Schedules don't
1:08:29play. Teams play.
1:08:30>> Mhm.
1:08:31>> So, if we're asking ourselves, man, look
1:08:33at all these. Remove the logos. Remove
1:08:36the conference patches. Just look at
1:08:37these rosters. And you take Ohio State,
1:08:40and you take Oregon, and you take Texas,
1:08:42it's hard to differentiate there. And
1:08:44they all presumably will have plus
1:08:47quarterback play. See, that's my hang-up
1:08:49on maybe Georgia. Like, Georgia, I want
1:08:51to be there, cuz I respect the heck out
1:08:53of Kirby Smart. Love the personnel
1:08:55overall. Specially love the defensive
1:08:57personnel. They won't have high-level
1:09:00wide receiver play, but they haven't had
1:09:01a thousand-yard receiver since the early
1:09:032000s, which is one of the wildest stats
1:09:05in college football.
1:09:07It's just
1:09:08if I look at Gunnar Stockton and you're
1:09:10telling me they got to run through Notre
1:09:13Dame, Miami, and Ohio State
1:09:14consecutively, do I think they're going
1:09:17to be able to match up QBs three out of
1:09:20three in the postseason? And I'm not
1:09:21there yet with Georgia. I can be there
1:09:23with Texas. I can be there with Arch
1:09:25Manning. Just like I can be there with
1:09:26Dante Moore, I can be there with Julian
1:09:27Sayin, I can be there with CJ Carr and
1:09:29whatnot. Uh so, I like at Texas right
1:09:31now, man, and it's up to the rest of the
1:09:33SEC to
1:09:35sort of pull their chair up to that
1:09:37table.
1:09:37>> Yeah.
1:09:38>> But, the rest of the SEC loves to tell
1:09:41you
1:09:42what has Texas proven to get that
1:09:43benefit of doubt? They haven't proven
1:09:45anything, but I'm I'm trying to predict
1:09:46the future. I'm not
1:09:47not trying to predict the past. That's
1:09:48easy.
1:09:49>> Yeah. He is you look at Arch Manning in
1:09:51the the back half of his season and how
1:09:52he handled it. He really started to come
1:09:54on. That's where that early game against
1:09:55Ohio State might have blundered him a
1:09:56little bit. The expectation on him going
1:09:58into the season was as high as I've ever
1:10:00seen for a quarterback.
1:10:01>> And then people bailed after that.
1:10:03>> jump ship quickly. Then you want to
1:10:05stick with him for a little bit. Florida
1:10:06takes play. You're like, "Okay, what's
1:10:07really happening here with Texas?" And
1:10:10then he goes on this crazy essential. I
1:10:11believe it was the Mississippi State
1:10:13game, right? Where it was like, "Oh,
1:10:14here we go again." Then all of a sudden
1:10:15they turn it on with 14 minutes left in
1:10:18the game.
1:10:19And they and they get it done. He has a
1:10:21great stint, does a great job. I mean,
1:10:22he his best game probably all year was
1:10:24against Michigan in the bowl game.
1:10:26Unbelievable. Showed off the athletic
1:10:28ability, the wheels, and all of that.
1:10:29Then you go in the transfer portal and
1:10:31get the number one wide receiver in Cam
1:10:32Coleman. You already have a wide
1:10:33receiver room riddled with five stars.
1:10:36So, you look at them on a roster and
1:10:37you're like, "Yeah, this team can really
1:10:39be something." My question is is let's
1:10:42just play the neg- let's go to negative
1:10:43town.
1:10:44>> Yep.
1:10:45>> And let's just say Texas has an
1:10:46underwhelming year again like some of
1:10:48the SEC haters want to say. They haven't
1:10:49earned the right to have this type of
1:10:51expectation on them after what happened
1:10:52last year.
1:10:53What is the conversation revolving
1:10:55around Sark?
1:10:57Cuz we've had a couple conversations
1:10:58about
1:11:00uh Matt Rhule and and coaches in the Big
1:11:02Ten where it's like these guys it's like
1:11:04we wanted to keep them then we paid them
1:11:05a bunch of money and then it didn't go
1:11:07the way we wanted. Now we have Sark
1:11:08who's an offensive genius. He's got one
1:11:10of the greatest football player with the
1:11:11last name Manning and he's got a full
1:11:13roster of everybody. If they don't have
1:11:16the season they are supposed to have
1:11:17which is a playoff berth which is
1:11:18running it deep into the playoffs.

1:11:21>> It's a national championship. Is what it
1:11:22is. It's very hard for me to go and just
1:11:24bluntly say national championship cuz
1:11:26that's clearly there's probably 12 teams
1:11:28that are banging that drum right now.

1:13:19>> This is the only team you should be
1:13:20talking that way about in the SEC.
1:13:22Texas is the only team who is national
1:13:24championship or bust in the SEC.
1:13:26>> Ooh.
1:13:27>> I mean, I never say that. I never say
1:13:28championship or bust.
1:13:29>> like that strong of a
1:13:30>> Yeah, I think it's no conversation most
1:13:32of the time.
1:13:32>> Yeah.
1:13:32>> 99% of the time when you talk about
1:13:34championship or bust, my retort to you
1:13:37is, "Okay, well, what does bust mean? Do
1:13:39you mean you're going to fire the guy?"
1:13:40Uh so, like what are you talking about?
1:13:42I'm not comfortable with what I'm about
1:13:44to say.
1:13:45Let me preface everything.
1:13:46>> Yeah, right.
1:13:46>> Yeah. So, I don't believe in
1:13:48championship or bust cuz I think there
1:13:50are too many variables, even if you've
1:13:52got the most loaded roster known to
1:13:53mankind, when it comes to winning a
1:13:55championship. Saban didn't win them
1:13:56every year at Alabama, and they were
1:13:58beyond loaded. They were more loaded
1:14:00than anyone is right now. So, there's a
1:14:02lot of variables and injuries and bounce
1:14:04of ball that's still in play. However, I
1:14:06do think the reality down there is
1:14:08indicative of the overall new reality in
1:14:10college football.
1:14:12When you can buy virtually whichever
1:14:15talent you want, you can go any
1:14:17direction you want. They need a new
1:14:19tailback? Let's just go get two of them.
1:14:22We want to fill out the receiver
1:14:23position? Let's go get Cam Coleman.
1:14:25We've already got Arch Manning. Let's go
1:14:27get a stud linebacker from Pitt. Like,
1:14:29let's just backfill at every turn with
1:14:32an option equal to or greater than what
1:14:34was already there.
1:14:36In a world where you can do that, and in
1:14:37a world where you haven't already won a
1:14:39championship, and in a world where,
1:14:42unlike the previous world, you're asking
1:14:44your big-time donors to heavily invest
1:14:47their money, Scratch that, spend their
1:14:49money cuz there's no return on it. It's
1:14:51just spent money.
1:14:53Expectations and consequences could
1:14:56potentially get really out of whack
1:14:58really quick. So, in a in a former life,
1:15:01if they're loaded and they make a good
1:15:03solid run and they get put out in an
1:15:05overtime classic semi-final game, man,
1:15:08that's that's tough, but this was still
1:15:09a good year. In this new world, I don't
1:15:12believe this way, but I think there are
1:15:14a lot of Texas people who could find
1:15:15themselves saying,
1:15:17"This window's not going to be forever.
1:15:19>> Mhm.
1:15:19>> And we've put ourselves in position
1:15:21where we're doing everything we're asked
1:15:23to do. We we sell this place out and
1:15:26there are plenty of people turned away
1:15:27every Saturday. We are pumping tens of
1:15:30millions of dollars into this football
1:15:32program as basically a salary pool to
1:15:35acquire talent. This is not the olden
1:15:38days where it's a crapshoot and we got
1:15:40to develop players and we'll recruit
1:15:42them today and they'll play for us 3
1:15:43years from now. This is a we can win now
1:15:46and we're Texas, so we can win now in
1:15:48all caps cuz we got advantages that
1:15:50maybe one or two other teams in America
1:15:53has. If we can't win a title, that means
1:15:55the only thing keeping us from it is the
1:15:57head coach. And so, it could get really
1:15:59uncomfortable. That's the trade-off.
1:16:01That guy knows that. Steve Sarkisian
1:16:02knows that. Yeah. So, this is not a
1:16:04mystery to him. It's it's the
1:16:05quintessential to whom much is given,
1:16:07much is expected kind of paradox in
1:16:09college football cuz it's nice to have
1:16:11that loaded roster. It's nice to have
1:16:13the front office they have and it's nice
1:16:14to never be kept up at night wondering
1:16:17if you're going to be deficient in any
1:16:19talent position, but the trade-off is
1:16:21you better go win a national
1:16:22championship. It's it's like the Herman
1:16:24Boone scene at the beginning of Remember
1:16:26the Titans. Uh I'm afraid I've put you
1:16:28in an untenable situation, coach. You
1:16:30you lose a game, they'll fire you. So,
1:16:32you go puke behind the stands and then
1:16:34you go take the field.
1:16:35>> Wipe your mouth and get after it.
1:16:37Wipe your mouth and get after it. Uh
1:16:39have you looked in Tex- Go ahead, Sherm.
1:16:40>> Uh I had some lore that I wanted to
1:16:42throw on top of that.
1:16:43>> lore him up.
1:16:44>> A lot of people talk about Joe Burrow's
1:16:46run
1:16:46uh in 2019. Sure. But, they talk about
1:16:49the year prior. There was a moment that
1:16:51created Joe Burrow. Does anybody know
1:16:52what that moment was?
1:16:53>> It was him getting his mouth busted
1:16:55open. Where were they? UCF? It was a
1:16:57bowl game.
1:16:58>> Yeah, it was uh yeah, he threw an
1:16:59interception and he got blindsided.
1:17:02>> There was a similar moment.
1:17:04Texas played Michigan.
1:17:06>> Oh, it's the zoom in. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:17:08>> the sideline
1:17:09>> playing
1:17:10>> he mouthed, "I'm just going to stop
1:17:13giving a fuck."
1:17:14And then he went off on Michigan after
1:17:17that game.
1:17:17>> like Joe Burrow when he says that a
1:17:18little bit.
1:17:19>> People are saying that Arch might have
1:17:21that Joey B mentality this year.
1:17:24The monster may have been created
1:17:26>> get you a little juiced up when you hear
1:17:27him brings that up.
1:17:28>> much does cuz it makes me think, is
1:17:30there a path this year where everyone's
1:17:32overthinking the room in August and July
1:17:35and Texas just goes scorched earth on
1:17:38everyone and it looks like Indiana
1:17:40looked last year, but with a more loaded
1:17:42roster and they lay waste to the SEC and
1:17:45by the time they get to the game on the
1:17:48road at Missouri, it's like Texas minus
1:17:5120 on the road against conference
1:17:53opponents
1:17:53>> Yes.
1:17:54>> and we find ourselves asking at the end
1:17:56of the year
1:17:57who could give Texas the best game in
1:18:00the playoff instead of can Texas win in
1:18:02the playoffs? Cuz they're the only team
1:18:04in this conference with the kind of
1:18:05roster that if it all clicks could turn
1:18:09the conversation that violently one
1:18:11direction.
1:18:12>> The phrase who can give X team the best
1:18:15game I feel like is a death sentence of
1:18:18a headline when ESPN, Fox, all these
1:18:21other companies do that. That always
1:18:23tells me this team is going to get
1:18:25throttled in the second round of the
1:18:27playoffs.
1:18:28>> Except last year.
1:18:29>> Last year, what what do you mean?
1:18:30>> Indiana. People started to talk that way
1:18:32about Indiana last year.
1:18:33>> Yeah, but we were in the what we they
1:18:35beat
1:18:35they they'd Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
1:18:37>> Yeah.
1:18:37>> And once they beat Alabama in the Rose
1:18:38Bowl, that conversation right there that
1:18:40that point you have what? Two more games
1:18:41to win and it's all over?
1:18:42>> two more, yeah.
1:18:43>> Right. It's if you're in November
1:18:45and you're saying, "What team is going
1:18:47to give this team even a good game?"
1:18:50>> Yep.
1:18:51>> And the best example of that
1:18:53is Ohio State
1:18:54a couple of years ago. They ended up
1:18:55winning the national championship, but
1:18:56who Michigan came in and
1:18:58punched them right in the mouth.
1:18:59>> Mhm.
1:19:00>> And that if you have a
1:19:01a schedule like this, which I I saw this
1:19:04is more of a question for generally
1:19:05everybody cuz I'm starting to have
1:19:07difficul- difficulty with strength of
1:19:09schedule because if, you know, Nick
1:19:11Saban came out and said, "Just cuz you
1:19:12win championships doesn't mean you have
1:19:14the best conference." I I
1:19:16disagree with that statement. I
1:19:17understand what he's trying to say. He's
1:19:18talking about for the meat and potatoes
1:19:20of your conference is better than any
1:19:22other conference, therefore making you
1:19:23the best conference. But if I look at
1:19:25strength of schedule and where the Big
1:19:26Ten has been the last three, four years,
1:19:30why are we looking at some of these
1:19:31schools in the SEC and being like,
1:19:33"These schools are great." When you go
1:19:34to bowl game season and these Big Ten
1:19:35teams are beating the SEC to where is
1:19:37the is the schedule or these teams
1:19:39really as good as we say they are since
1:19:41the NIL has taken off? This is open to
1:19:44the room. Doesn't have to be Josh Pate
1:19:45that answers this. That's kind of where
1:19:47I like the strength of schedule
1:19:49conversation kind of I get a little
1:19:51lost.
1:19:52>> Can I make a point?
1:19:53>> Go ahead.
1:19:53>> And it's advice to everyone out there
1:19:55cuz this debate's going to be had a
1:19:57million times between now and the start
1:19:59of the season and beyond. Do you people
1:20:01notice how everyone in this bus, there
1:20:04are 47 people in here right now?
1:20:06Everyone kept their mouth shut and they
1:20:08let you get your full question out.
1:20:11They didn't jump on in the first third
1:20:13of the question and go down some rabbit
1:20:15hole. They let you get the full context
1:20:17and the full thought. It was painful cuz
1:20:18it was like a minute and a half long
1:20:19question. And they let you get the whole
1:20:21thing out.
1:20:22>> Yes.
1:20:22>> And they patiently sat here. All right,
1:20:24so then that's part one of my
1:20:27Part
1:20:29two of my advice is I'm going to answer
1:20:31your question with a question cuz I
1:20:33really want we asking? Are we asking
1:20:35which conference is better and how we
1:20:37define better? Are we defining which
1:20:41conference strength of schedule is
1:20:43tougher to play? Are we asking how does
1:20:46that really manifest itself come playoff
1:20:48time? Like what specifically are we
1:20:50looking for?
1:20:52Cuz this is the thing I heard from Saban
1:20:54last week. And I heard him say one thing
1:20:56and then I heard some people take it
1:20:58wildly different directions. And I
1:21:00listened I intentionally listened to
1:21:02like five people's takes. And I sat
1:21:04there in silence and I said,
1:21:06"It really feels like we need to further
1:21:07drill down on what point we're trying to
1:21:09make here." Cuz everyone went all kinds
1:21:10of different directions. So So what is
1:21:12it specifically you'd like to know?
1:21:13>> What I would like to know is how are we
1:21:15defining
1:21:17how good these teams are with their like
1:21:20the teams that they're playing
1:21:22All right, let me actually think about
1:21:23this.
1:21:24>> It's important.
1:21:25>> It is important.
1:21:27Quick T because I feel like we're we're
1:21:29on the we're on the edge of something
1:21:31right now.
1:21:32When we're looking at somebody's
1:21:33schedule and we're saying this is the
1:21:34strength of schedule,
1:21:36I feel like
1:21:37the majority of the world is looking at
1:21:39the logo still
1:21:41as opposed to the talent and how the NIL
1:21:44era has truly, whether you like it or
1:21:46not, has balanced out
1:21:48how the dominance of the ACC and the Big
1:21:5010
1:21:51has taken place.
1:21:52>> Mhm.
1:21:52>> And so when we look at
1:21:55strength of schedule here, you have
1:21:571 2 3 4 5 6 7
1:22:018 9 of the top 10 teams are all SEC.
1:22:04So that is going to tell me that the SEC
1:22:07is the strongest conference. However,
1:22:09the SEC has not won a national
1:22:11championship in 3 years. In bowl games,
1:22:14which I will give the insurance policy
1:22:16of a lot of guys transfer, they forgo
1:22:18the bowl games now, things are moving
1:22:20around a lot different ways. So the bowl
1:22:21games don't really give us a feel. But
1:22:23in the last couple years, Big 10 has
1:22:25outperformed the SEC in bowl games
1:22:27against each other. So, when I look at
1:22:29the top 25 strength of schedule here
1:22:30given by ESPN,
1:22:32I don't understand, first off,
1:22:35how is Michigan not in this? Because if
1:22:38you look at who Michigan plays, Penn
1:22:39State, Oklahoma, uh Ohio State, Oregon,
1:22:43Indiana. All right? Three of the four of
1:22:45those teams were in the playoffs last
1:22:47year. Four of those teams. Two of them
1:22:49Two of them have won a national
1:22:50championship in the last 2 years.
1:22:52>> Yeah.
1:22:52>> So, how is that not in the top 10 as
1:22:55opposed to Go up, please.
1:22:57>> Yes, sir.
1:22:57>> And I don't know these schedules.
1:22:59Uh everybody's schedule.
1:23:01Arkansas, yeah, I I haven't looked at
1:23:04anything of as far as Arkansas. I hope
1:23:05Tyson Chicken figures it out.
1:23:08Like you look at these schools, they're
1:23:09playing clearly SEC teams.
1:23:12But Michigan's playing two national
1:23:14championship winners in the last 2 years
1:23:16and two team and and four teams that are
1:23:19in the top 15. So, help me understand
1:23:22that. Did I land that plane at all for
1:23:23you?
1:23:24>> You landed it. It bounced.
1:23:25>> It bounced.
1:23:26>> Yeah, you did a go around once, but you
1:23:28>> kind of how I operate.
1:23:28>> You like No, you're asking what
1:23:29everyone's asking. All right, there
1:23:31>> I would like a definitive
1:23:32>> Yeah.
1:23:33>> answer to that.
1:23:33>> There are different conversations to
1:23:35have here.
1:23:36All right, firstly, if I took uh who's
1:23:38your favorite to win the Super Bowl this
1:23:40year? Or or is that premature?
1:23:41>> It's premature, but we'll just go
1:23:42Buffalo Bills.
1:23:43>> Well, if I took the Buffalo Bills and I
1:23:45dropped them in the Big 12 this year,
1:23:46>> Sure.
1:23:47>> they would go 12 and 0 in the regular
1:23:49season
1:23:49>> Yes.
1:23:49>> and they would be the number one overall
1:23:51seed in the playoff. You would look at
1:23:53their schedule, justifiably, and say
1:23:55they didn't play the kind of schedule
1:23:57that Texas played.
1:23:58>> Sure.
1:23:59>> But they'd still be the Buffalo Bills.
1:24:00They'd still be the overwhelming
1:24:01favorite to win it all. They'd win every
1:24:03college football playoff game by
1:24:05multiple touchdowns, and it would turn
1:24:07out that the quality of team they are
1:24:10did not necessarily correlate with the
1:24:13strength of schedule they played. So,
1:24:14clearly there's a detachment between how
1:24:17good you are as a team and how difficult
1:24:20your schedule was. Right. think where
1:24:22the rub is is not
1:24:25what your schedule says about your
1:24:27ability to win a title. Cuz Indiana was
1:24:29a national championship caliber team no
1:24:31matter who they played last year. The
1:24:32question becomes at the end of November,
1:24:35at the beginning of December, when
1:24:36they're selecting playoff teams, the
1:24:38question to me boils down ironically to
1:24:41like the 9, 10, 11, 12 type seeds. Cuz
1:24:44you're asking, if I'm 9 and 3 and I
1:24:47played Oklahoma's schedule and you're 10
1:24:50and 2 and you played Oklahoma State's
1:24:53schedule or something like that, should
1:24:55I get benefit of doubt over you? And you
1:24:58could even talk about strength of
1:24:59record. Like I'm a big strength of
1:25:01record guy over strength of schedule.
1:25:03If my strength of record says even me at
1:25:05three losses is a better resume than you
1:25:08at two losses, that's where the rubber
1:25:09meets road on all this. Now, that's
1:25:12period. I begin a next sentence. You
1:25:14asked if the Big Ten's winning
1:25:16championships, how could the SEC
1:25:18conference strength of schedule be
1:25:20looked at as more difficult? I think
1:25:22it's very simply that if you look at top
1:25:24three or four in Big Ten, they probably
1:25:27measure above and beyond top three or
1:25:28four in SEC, but I think there is still
1:25:31a lot of delineation between the second
1:25:34and third tier of the Big Ten and second
1:25:36and third tier of the SEC. If I if I
1:25:38took randomly the nine seed from the SEC
1:25:41this year, maybe it's Florida or someone
1:25:43like that, and I take the nine seed from
1:25:45the Big Ten, I don't know who that would
1:25:46be, like Minnesota, someone like that,
1:25:49clearly there's more future pro talent
1:25:50on Florida's roster than Minnesota's.
1:25:53So, the working theory is if I have to
1:25:56go play Florida, even if that team's en
1:25:58route to a 6 and 6 year this year, it
1:26:00doesn't change the fact that if I face
1:26:02that group of talent on the right
1:26:04Saturday, they can get me. They have
1:26:07more difference makers on the field than
1:26:09Minnesota would have. This is just on an
1:26:10average Saturday. Or if let's say
1:26:13Georgia goes and plays Florida and let's
1:26:15say Ohio State goes and plays Minnesota.
1:26:17There is probably no one starting for
1:26:19Minnesota that Ohio State would trade
1:26:21starters for, just one-for-one. Georgia
1:26:24may be the best team in this league this
1:26:25year.
1:26:26There will be players for Florida who
1:26:28are starting against Georgia that
1:26:29Georgia would gladly trade for,
1:26:31one-for-one. So, that's where the
1:26:34strength of schedule argument comes down
1:26:35to. But, it doesn't mean just because
1:26:38you faced a tougher strength of schedule
1:26:39that you're a better team than someone.
1:26:42And lastly, back to the bowl example. I
1:26:45don't value bowl outcomes at all. I
1:26:47don't think you need bowl results to
1:26:48make the Big Ten's case, by the way.
1:26:50But, I will say I've had a working
1:26:52theory for a couple of years now. You
1:26:55could tie it to coaching, but you could
1:26:56also tie it downstream to overall pride
1:26:59and performance. I just think the Big
1:27:01Ten is better at hiring because they had
1:27:04to be for a long time because they could
1:27:06not count on a talent edge to bail them
1:27:08out. And then all of a sudden the SEC
1:27:10doesn't have the big talent edge
1:27:11anymore, and they're getting exposed on
1:27:13the margins. And then point two, I think
1:27:15straight up the pride and performance of
1:27:18the way Big Ten teams play is different
1:27:21than the way average SEC teams play.
1:27:23>> Yeah.
1:27:23>> I just think there's a lot more pride in
1:27:25playing for the brand on the on the
1:27:28helmet in the Big Ten in some cases than
1:27:30there is in the SEC.
1:27:32>> Do you think there's more pride in the
1:27:33brand of the big individual Big Ten team
1:27:36playing for the Big Ten than the SEC?
1:27:38>> I think the team-oriented cultures at
1:27:40many places in the Big Ten is better
1:27:43than what it should be in the SEC and
1:27:45it's not.
1:27:46>> internally on the roster? Cuz I was
1:27:48going to say SEC loves to tell you that
1:27:49the SEC is the best.
1:27:51>> They do.
1:27:51>> They love They love doing that.
1:27:54So, where do we land?
1:27:55>> I think the Big Ten's the best
1:27:57conference in college football because I
1:27:58measure best by how many national
1:28:00championship capable teams do I think
1:28:02you have, and I think the Big Ten has
1:28:04several, and I think the SEC may have
1:28:06one this year with others that can
1:28:09insert themselves into that discussion.
1:28:11>> Right. So, that's where I land.
1:28:13>> Okay.
1:28:13>> But, also, if Nick Saban's point was
1:28:16that Texas is going to play a harder
1:28:19schedule than Penn State, well, he's
1:28:21he's valid. That's true.
1:28:23>> Right.
1:28:23>> It doesn't change the reality that if
1:28:25Penn State's better than Georgia,
1:28:26they're better than Georgia. Uh Georgia
1:28:28just had a tougher path to get to the
1:28:29end of November than Penn State did.
1:28:31>> Yes, okay.
1:28:32>> So, it's important to contextualize
1:28:33strength of schedule and strength of
1:28:34record properly, but it almost never
1:28:37gets presented that way.
1:28:38>> And I think you did a great job right
1:28:39there. Cuz you're when you look at the
1:28:41best conference, you're looking at the
1:28:42top teams in the best conference and how
1:28:43they fare against all the other
1:28:44conferences.
1:28:45>> And let me let me illustrate that. Let
1:28:46me let me tell you how people could get
1:28:47their logic thrown back in their face
1:28:49this year.
1:28:50Let's say Texas goes 16 and 0,
1:28:52undefeated, they win the national title.
1:28:54Let's say the next best team in the SEC
1:28:56went eight and four in the regular
1:28:57season. So, Texas was great, everyone
1:29:00else was average at best.
1:29:02Was that a good year for the SEC?
1:29:05Did the SEC prove they were the best
1:29:07conference in America
1:29:09cuz they won the national title?
1:29:10>> Right. The answer to that would be no.
1:29:12>> I think it's no.
1:29:13>> Yeah.
1:29:14>> But, if the only thing you're going off
1:29:15of is national championships, then the
1:29:18SEC proved themselves. To me, what makes
1:29:20the Big Ten so robust is not just
1:29:22they've won back-to-back-to-back titles
1:29:24and may win a fourth one this year. I'd
1:29:26probably pick them to win a fourth one
1:29:27this year. It's that they've done it
1:29:29with multiple teams and other teams that
1:29:33weren't previously in the equation, i.e.
1:29:35Indiana, have gotten their act together.
1:29:37So, like they're they're a more robust
1:29:39top of conference. It's not just Ohio
1:29:42State anymore. Michigan's done it. Ohio
1:29:44State's done it. Indiana's done it.
1:29:45Oregon hasn't done it, but may very well
1:29:48do it this year. And then, the question
1:29:50becomes, all right, what's the
1:29:51equivalent of that in the SEC? You can't
1:29:53tell me you have that right now.
1:29:54>> Right. Yeah, absolutely. I I agree with
1:29:57that. And you're saying Nick Saban, his
1:29:58argument is
1:30:00we don't have to worry about the what
1:30:01the top of the conference is. Look at
1:30:02Look at the whole conference as a whole.
1:30:04>> I think those guys in the SEC understand
1:30:07Mississippi State any given year is
1:30:09going to have a really bad record and
1:30:10you don't get any credit if you beat
1:30:12them, but every time you play
1:30:13Mississippi State they randomly have
1:30:16line of scrimmage talent that's going to
1:30:17play on Sunday. They randomly have a
1:30:19safety that's going to be a round two
1:30:21pick down the road. There's some random
1:30:22freak show at receiver and like they
1:30:24come out of that game having won a dog
1:30:27fight and they think to themselves,
1:30:29"That team's going to end up being five
1:30:30and seven. We're going to get criticized
1:30:32for playing them close
1:30:34and yet I watched the caliber of athlete
1:30:36that was on the field today. They didn't
1:30:37have as many of them as we do. They
1:30:39didn't have the depth of them that we
1:30:40do, but that was not an easy thing we
1:30:43just went through today. Whereas if I
1:30:45went and played Purdue, I would not be
1:30:47saying that." That's kind of their
1:30:48attitude.
1:30:50>> Yeah, the same thing goes for a team
1:30:51like South Carolina. Vanderbilt's going
1:30:53to get to that point now, too. Like
1:30:54they're starting to have more NFL talent
1:30:57around. Like JP Harvey, every time he
1:30:58watches game on Sunday, he's pointing
1:31:00out five
1:31:01Gamecocks that are on that are playing.
1:31:03It's like, "How do you guys never put it
1:31:04together?" Like put it together and go
1:31:06win.
1:31:06>> Yeah.
1:31:07>> It's just wild, man. It's wild. Um
1:31:11What was the Scroll up real quick.
1:31:14Oh, I can't believe I This
1:31:16LSU.
1:31:18That to me is the biggest wild card of
1:31:19this entire college football season.

1:31:22>> Cuz the issue last year with Brian
1:31:24Kelly, besides Brian Kelly, was the
1:31:26offense.
1:31:26>> Great Great sentence. Great scouting
1:31:28report.
1:31:29>> Thank you very much. The offense was an
1:31:30issue. Lane Kiffin comes in, regardless
1:31:33of all the extra noise that took place,
1:31:34how he left Ole Miss,
1:31:36if he can do one thing, it's he can
1:31:38scheme up a great offensive game plan
1:31:39that week in and week out where they can
1:31:40score on anybody.
1:31:41>> And put a roster together.
1:31:42>> And put a roster together, which I
1:31:43believe is over $40 million. I don't
1:31:45know if that's confirmed or not, but $40

1:32:00had a dog fight with who? Mississippi
1:32:02State. But they ran zero once again that
1:32:04got them killed in the playoffs and also
1:32:06the last play of the game against
1:32:07Mississippi State. So I see this
1:32:08quarterback and then a barrage of NFL
1:32:11talent that's on there. Lane Kiffin
1:32:13comes in, the prodigal son.
1:32:15Is this like
1:32:17a boomer bust situation for LSU? Or
1:32:19could we give a little more leeway? Cuz
1:32:21now LSU has officially gone all in. They
1:32:23did the Brian Kelly experiment. I think
1:32:24from day one we all sat there after that
1:32:27first press conference and go, "This
1:32:29shit's not going to work out." This is
1:32:31water and oil. This is not going to This
1:32:34is not something that blends together
1:32:36ever. Lane Kiffin, as quirky and all
1:32:38over the place he is, this guy's a a
1:32:40great fit for LSU. I I personally like
1:32:43him. I like him as a dark horse in the
1:32:44SEC conference.

1:33:06what? 38th in rushing last year.
1:33:08So they were they were really really bad

1:33:12It shows you how good Ty Simpson was
1:33:13throughout the entire year for them to
1:33:15put them into the playoffs. And then
1:33:17there's LSU who was one behind them in
1:33:19rushing and they go in the portal, they
1:33:20get the best offensive lineman. Is it
1:33:22Seaton?

1:34:42kind of team that needs a long runway to
1:34:44get up to speed?
1:34:46Cuz they don't really have it. They play
1:34:47three loseable games in their first four
1:34:49weeks. Cuz I count Clemson as a loseable
1:34:51game.

1:34:53>> Uh you don't you have no idea week one
1:34:54LSU over Alabama last year. You have no
1:34:56idea what week one could bring.
1:34:59But, with LSU, I don't believe in
1:35:01throwing out the dollar figure. The
1:35:03dollar figure's nothing without
1:35:04attaching the players to the dollar
1:35:06figure. So, did you go buy the right
1:35:08players? And I think they bought the
1:35:10right players. So, like I think they
1:35:12could make a quantum leap this year.
1:35:13But, it's a it is I agree with you. It's
1:35:15a little more of a dark horse situation.
1:35:18Cuz you have no idea. You just your mind
1:35:20is so used to the traditional way of
1:35:22judging teams. Then when you have so
1:35:23much newness in the bucket. In such a
1:35:26competitive league, you struggle to see
1:35:28a team immediately jump into the top.
1:35:30But, Lane Kiffin's lived the life he's
1:35:31going to live this year for a long time
1:35:33now. That's what they were doing at Ole
1:35:34Miss. They were just putting together a
1:35:36team year by year at Ole Miss. They
1:35:37weren't recruiting and developing. They
1:35:40had already divorced themselves from the
1:35:42myth that that was how it was going to
1:35:43work. So, it's not like he's in
1:35:45unfamiliar territory here. It's just a
1:35:48lot of new. And that's okay. Because
1:35:49they're They're the only ones trying to
1:35:50pull that off. They're just the most
1:35:51extreme example of it.
1:35:53>> It's a It's a lot of new and it takes a
1:35:54leader of men to get all those guys to
1:35:56cohesively come together. Joey Maguire
1:35:58is a great example. We We were there for
1:35:59the spring tour. I mean, there's not a
1:36:01better vibe than Joey Maguire when you
1:36:03walk into that building. He's giving you
1:36:04He grabbed all of us by the shoulders in
1:36:06the back. He's loving us up. He brought
1:36:08a couple of guys over, "Look at this
1:36:09one." He's showing them off like prized
1:36:11possessions. Like, "Look at the size of
1:36:12my tackles that I have today." And you
1:36:14see that I don't personally know Lane. I
1:36:16know you know Lane. Is Does Lane have
1:36:18that capability to take a $40 million
1:36:20roster a bunch of uh missionaries coming
1:36:23coming in here and bringing them
1:36:25together throughout the entire spring
1:36:28and into the fall to to do what Joey did
1:36:30with at Texas Tech?

1:38:02Ole Miss fan base has a lot to live up

1:38:06circled an Ole Miss home game and built
1:38:09this myth, this idea up in their mind of

1:38:14going to create, like in terms of an
1:38:16environment. That hasn't happened in a
1:38:17long time. LSU gets that stuff
1:38:19sometimes.

1:38:30That's a lot to live up to. Here's the
1:38:31problem. The problem sometimes is those
1:38:33kinds of games end up being your highest
1:38:35priced games, which means the richest of
1:38:37the alumni are the ones that grab up all
1:38:39the tickets. They're normally not the
1:38:41ones that are leaving the stadium with
1:38:43no voice afterwards. So, a lot of times,
1:38:46the deliverable does not match the hype
1:38:49on those games. And you you tell me you
1:38:51couldn't see Lane Kiffin walking out of
1:38:53there with a 30-23 win, walking to the
1:38:55podium and saying something along the
1:38:56lines of,
1:38:58"Yeah, we probably played in
1:39:0010 or 15 venues louder than this one. It
1:39:02was a good solid environment, but you
1:39:04know, it's this is not the toughest
1:39:06we'll deal with this year." You're
1:39:07telling me you couldn't see that?

1:48:55and realized I'm don't think I'm beating
1:48:58him out. And I want to play immediately.
1:49:01And I mean, Oregon's pissed at it,
1:49:03obviously. Cuz like you think a guy's
1:49:05coming in there to fortify your roster
1:49:08at that position for 2 or 3 years to
1:49:09come and all of a sudden he wants to hit
1:49:10the exit door. So, like what are you
1:49:12going to do? From an optics perspective,
1:49:14if you fight it, then you get labeled in
1:49:16the agency world as their anti-player.
1:49:19And so, Landing had a tough decision to
1:49:20make, and they just
1:49:22they let him go. It's But, he's clearly
1:49:24a good player cuz he's going to go to
1:49:26Cal this year. They They
1:49:28They may end up having like the best
1:49:30second best quarterback in the Big 10.
1:49:32He's going to be way up there in terms
1:49:34of ACC, not Big 10. Overall, like ACC
1:49:37hierarchy.

1:50:47what is your thought process on just
1:50:48putting a stamp on these players? Like,
1:50:51do you sit back and go, "Okay, I'm only
1:50:52watching one practice, so I'm not going
1:50:54to put my 100% opinion on these guys"?
1:50:56Or you What you see is what you get, and
1:50:58that is now going to define your opinion
1:50:59for the rest of the year?

1:51:03>> What I like to do is So, I'm using First
1:51:05off, I'm using my eyeballs. These are
1:51:06not a coach's eyeballs. So, I've got to
1:51:09I've got to take that into
1:51:10consideration.
1:51:11You know what stands out to you. A lot
1:51:13of times you're going in there and you
1:51:14have opinions of guys and you want your
1:51:15eyes to verify. Everything from height,
1:51:17weight, to explosivity, to where's he
1:51:20fitting in the depth chart? Is what
1:51:22we've been told publicly matching up
1:51:24with what my eyes are seeing? And then
1:51:26what you want to do is you want to ask
1:51:27the coaching staff as many questions,
1:51:29kind of trying to verify what you saw.
1:51:31Cuz a lot of times, like there was a
1:51:33there was a moment, I'm not going to say
1:51:34the team, but there was a moment this
1:51:35last spring where I see a guy
1:51:37and I just so happened to see him on
1:51:39like his career day.
1:51:42And I ask and I get told that guy's not
1:51:44going to be a factor on this team this
1:51:46fall.
1:51:46>> No way.
1:51:47>> And just point-blank, that guy's not
1:51:49unless we have tons of injury, that
1:51:51guy's probably not going to be a factor.
1:51:53Um a little bit of a character thing,
1:51:54but also he's wildly inconsistent. But
1:51:57to me,
1:51:58I watch 90 minutes and I think,
1:52:00is that a dark horse all-conference guy?
1:52:03And no, it turns out he's just dark.
1:52:04He's just a dark horse. He's going to be
1:52:05off the radar.
1:52:12>> Yeah, cuz it nothing bothers me more
1:52:13than when people go
1:52:15to a spring practice. They see players
1:52:18and they may or may not have a good or a
1:52:20bad day and they want to define that
1:52:21person.
1:52:22>> Got to be careful.

1:52:24the NFL. Even if you're a potential Hall
1:52:26of Fame guy. Even if you're a DB,
1:52:29you know, that has been watching
1:52:30quarterbacks your whole entire life.
1:52:32Those are the types of things I'm like,
1:52:33you need to stay away from that type of
1:52:34situation.
1:52:34>> You got to be careful about this, too.
1:52:35You guys went and saw Miami in the
1:52:36spring.

1:52:39out in the spring.
1:52:41So you got to be careful what you're
1:52:42watching and then like contextualize it
1:52:45with or how good do I think that unit's
1:52:46going to be? Well, they looked a little
1:52:48iffy today. Well, first off, they were
1:52:49in shells. Secondly, three starters are
1:52:52out at that unit. So like how do I I
1:52:55just got to contextualize it all
1:52:56properly.
1:52:57>> Yeah, you you absolutely cuz when I
1:52:58watched when I was in Miami and we had
1:53:00this conversation of hey, the offensive
1:53:02line looks really good, but I've never
1:53:04walked into watching one-on-ones, been a
1:53:07part of them, watched them on film,
1:53:08watched other teams where an O line wins
1:53:1290% of the reps.
1:53:14And then you go back from the two guys
1:53:15they had last year, the book end
1:53:16defensive ends, it's like
1:53:18oh, they there's a huge drop-off. And
1:53:21then we go sit with Cristobal and he's
1:53:22like, "Just so you guys know, we have a
1:53:23bunch of guys out." Sitting there
1:53:25whether it's injuries or resting guys or
1:53:26whatever.
1:53:27Miami, I'm excited to watch this year. I
1:53:29mean, they're clearly they're the
1:53:31like you talked about Texas in the SEC,
1:53:33Miami is that of the ACC.
1:53:34>> They've been over the past week I was
1:53:36really trying to nail down my national
1:53:38title pick.
1:53:39And I've gone back and forth, so I'm not
1:53:40nailed down on it. But there were two of
1:53:42the last 7 days where I laid my head on
1:53:45my pillow thinking I'm going to pick
1:53:46Miami to win the national title. That's
1:53:48how high I am on that.
1:53:49>> Cristobal's a homie, too. I mean, that
1:53:51is One school, too, is
1:53:53you point out SMU, I was going to go to
1:53:55the one before that, Clemson. Like,
1:53:57Dabo, what is
1:53:59what's the future for Dabo if it doesn't

1:54:21I spent 2 days with this man this
1:54:24spring. He's awesome. It is a great
1:54:26hang.
1:54:28Dabo Swinney is 1,000% resolute that
1:54:31they've made the right moves they need
1:54:32to make,
1:54:33that they're not done, they're just
1:54:35getting started. He's going to be there
1:54:37for a long time. They're going to pull
1:54:38the nose up. They will win another
1:54:40national title at Clemson. He is 1,000%
1:54:42resolute. He will look He will look
1:54:44daggers through your eyes when he says
1:54:46that.
1:54:47You watch Clemson. Do you feel that's
1:54:50the trajectory of that program?
1:54:52>> I do not.
1:54:53>> I personally don't either. I'd love for
1:54:56him to be right cuz I just I love Dabo
1:54:58Swinney. But I I don't feel that either.
1:55:00I felt like if you were going to do it,
1:55:02last year's team was the team to do it.
1:55:04>> Mhm.
1:55:04>> And then this year there's a lot of
1:55:06unknown. Okay, but let's just take that
1:55:08world view Dabo has versus the opinion
1:55:10you and I happen to hold that I think
1:55:11majority would agree with us. He's
1:55:13proven people wrong before and he will
1:55:15bottle that up this year. He'll bottle
1:55:17up the whole uh they're doubting us
1:55:18again. You know what we've done
1:55:20historically when people doubt us. I
1:55:21don't know that history is always the
1:55:23absolute best indicator of what the
1:55:25future holds in the sport, but that's
1:55:27where the disconnect is. Like that's
1:55:29where it's it's such a unique case cuz
1:55:32in the normal world when there's
1:55:33expectation and you fall flat, you're on
1:55:35the hot seat next year and if you don't
1:55:37deliver the next year, you're fired.
1:55:39>> Right.
1:55:40>> But this is Dabo Swinney. It's the face
1:55:42of Clemson football. Now and for the
1:55:45foreseeable future unless someone comes
1:55:47in there and does something truly
1:55:49decade-long historic, Dabo Swinney is
1:55:51Clemson football and it wasn't that when
1:55:53I was a child. So he's come along since
1:55:55I have existed and totally redefined the
1:55:57face of a major program. He won multiple
1:55:59national titles. He did it against the
1:56:01apex predator in the sport while that
1:56:04apex predator was at its best in
1:56:06Alabama. The dude's a legend. He's an
1:56:08icon. He's like Rushmore caliber in my
1:56:11lifetime of head coaches. So are you
1:56:13really going to tell me they're going to
1:56:15tell that guy, thanks but no thanks,
1:56:16you're done here?
1:56:17Is that how the exit would work?
1:56:20>> No, it's for sure not happening.
1:56:21>> situation where it goes sideways.
1:56:23>> ways would be the the terminology they
1:56:24would use on the on the breaking
1:56:25graphic.

1:56:29When you got inf- infinite amounts of
1:56:30respect for someone both in sports and
1:56:33in the business world and it just comes
1:56:35time, you mutually decide to part ways
1:56:38and it's negotiated and there's a buyout
1:56:40and
1:56:41you've got like a cushy administrative
1:56:43job afterwards, whatever you want.
1:56:45I don't get the sense that's how Dabo
1:56:48would leave Clemson.
1:56:50Cuz that is not where his mind is at.

1:56:54the last few holes of his career. Dabo
1:56:57Swinney thinks they're about to turn to
1:56:59the back nine right now. Like that's
1:57:01just how he views himself. And people
1:57:03can think, oh, that's so myopic. Like
1:57:04that is completely delusional. This man
1:57:07has made an entire career of proving
1:57:10people wrong. So, you got to understand,
1:57:12they've told that guy he's delusional
1:57:14before and they've won titles.
1:57:16So, you thinking he's delusional is just
1:57:18indicative to him that I must be on the
1:57:20right track then. Like this does not
1:57:22phase him.

1:57:38he I know he's expressed it publicly.
1:57:41But, it seems like a lot of these
1:57:42coaches that were so successful pre-NIL,
1:57:45get in an NIL world and they are of the
1:57:47thought process that we don't need. We
1:57:48just need to keep being who we are. We
1:57:50don't need to conform to what college
1:57:52football is. College football can stay
1:57:54with us.
1:57:54>> Yeah, so
1:57:56his opinion is a lot of people's
1:57:58opinions. He He is the
1:58:00face of a lot of opinions that many
1:58:02share, which is, you know, the whole,
1:58:04hey, I'm not anti-players getting paid.
1:58:07I wish we had guardrails. I wish we had
1:58:09more guidelines. I wish we had proper
1:58:11structure to this world. Also, I wish
1:58:13what players make was public. So, we
1:58:17could get a better sense of what the
1:58:18quote-unquote market is. And then, of
1:58:20course, there's going to be some dude on
1:58:21the side of the road yelling, yeah, you
1:58:22should collectively bargain it. And then
1:58:24someone else is going to yell, we can't
1:58:25collective bargain with college
1:58:27athletes. That's different. That makes
1:58:28them employees. And then that group
1:58:30says, what's so bad about that? And then
1:58:31that group says, I'll tell you what's so
1:58:32bad about that. And you just want the
1:58:34season to start.
1:58:35>> Right. Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
1:58:36>> And then you just realize it's July and
1:58:37we need college football more than ever.
1:58:39>> Correct. But, he has the opinion. He's
1:58:41an old school kind of guy, so he leans
1:58:43more traditionalist in his views.
1:58:45Uh but, at the same time, they just took
1:58:47what, like 10 portal guys, I think, in
1:58:49this this cycle. So, they're going to
1:58:51have got specifically Tom Allen is his
1:58:53coordinator, second-year defensive
1:58:55coordinator. And like he just flat out
1:58:57looked and said, "You know, the thing
1:58:58about our secondary is they can't run
1:59:00fast enough. So, we need to get speed in
1:59:03our secondary." So, they went to the
1:59:05portal and they tried to overhaul their
1:59:07defensive secondary.
1:59:09And they we'll see how they did, but
1:59:11this is the first go-round of Dabo's
1:59:13sort of
1:59:14I I won't say resisting, but trying, but
1:59:17like he's kind of dipping his toe into
1:59:19the concept of using the portal more.
1:59:22It'll never be the lean-to, but it'll be
1:59:24a resource they could use. I've just
1:59:26always look, my my big gripe with the
1:59:29way they've run things over there is
1:59:31they've got the Clemson way. They've got
1:59:33the characteristics and the values they
1:59:35want a Clemson player to have. People
1:59:37can think that's hokey, I love that.
1:59:38That's college football to me.
1:59:41I've just never believed that those
1:59:43attributes are only able to be found in
1:59:46high school recruiting.
1:59:47I believe you could run a comb through
1:59:49the portal any given year
1:59:51and most of it may get filtered out,
1:59:53okay? Your boxes you need to be checked,
1:59:55that may filter out 90% of the portal.
1:59:58But you're not looking to sign 30 or 40
1:59:59kids, you're looking to sign five of
2:00:01them, let's say. I believe any given
2:00:03year there are five kids at positions of
2:00:05need for Clemson University in the
2:00:07portal
2:00:08that it would not hurt you at all and it
2:00:10would not sacrifice anything at all to
2:00:12go get.
2:00:13They're trying it this year.

2:00:57the train in the direction it needs to

2:01:00okay, they brought their 10 guys in in
2:01:01the roster, they've revamped their
2:01:02secondary. Now we can see how they start
2:01:05to mesh together. Those things are
2:01:06things that you can go based on the
2:01:07result that takes place in week one and
2:01:09go, that'll take time. That's where I
2:01:11kind of lean back a little bit more of
2:01:13when you look at Michigan, it's like you
2:01:15look at the roster and you know where
2:01:17you're successful at and where your
2:01:19question marks are. Given all the areas
2:01:21where you feel very positive about, they
2:01:23massively outweigh the concerns. But
2:01:27that one concern
2:01:29is your quarterback. And that's where
2:01:31you'll know a little bit more about the
2:01:33identity of well, not the identity, but
2:01:35the success of your team as opposed to
2:01:37these two teams.

2:02:59alongside it, it's going to cross the
2:03:01road at some point. We have to determine
2:03:04very quickly whether we can beat this
2:03:06thing, whether we can get past it before
2:03:07it crosses the road.
2:03:08Split-second decision. We think we can
2:03:10make it. We drive through the outer
2:03:13circulation. So, technically, you have
2:03:14to drive through the tornado,
2:03:16but we know it's outer circulation. It's
2:03:18not going to pick us up.
2:03:19Fingers crossed.
2:03:20We get through.
2:03:22We come up on an intersection. I take a
2:03:24left. I Y turn it and turn it back
2:03:27around in time for that tornado to go
2:03:28across the road in front of us. We're
2:03:31less than 50 yd away from it. And it
2:03:34wiped a building clean. It partially
2:03:37destroyed another house. And the smell,
2:03:39so you roll down the windows.
2:03:41The what the most vivid sensory overload
2:03:44is the smell of topsoil and vegetation
2:03:47cuz it's ripping trees right in front of
2:03:49you. And it clogs your nostrils almost
2:03:52as strongly as like if you opened a
2:03:53magic marker and put it under your nose.
2:03:56Or you walked up to a gas pump and gas
2:03:58spilled all over the place. The
2:03:59thickness of the gas fumes in your in
2:04:01your nostrils, that's how thick the the
2:04:03smell of topsoil and vegetation was as
2:04:06soon as we rolled the window down.
2:04:08Then we come in behind it and there's
2:04:10destruction everywhere. Now, we took
2:04:12some heat for not stopping and helping
2:04:14people.
2:04:16What the YouTube commenters did not know
2:04:18is we had already coordinated with three
2:04:21other chase teams who are on the other
2:04:23side of the tornado. So, as soon as that
2:04:25tornado comes through, they're already
2:04:26there.

2:04:29first aid. So, our modus operandi when
2:04:31we're in the field is we already know
2:04:32where each other is and we know if this
2:04:35building just got leveled, then we got

2:04:41still on the ground, so we leave first
2:04:43response to them, and we continue to
2:04:45follow behind that tornado.

2:05:10kind of put some question marks on some

2:05:15about things we said we'd do, but we
2:05:17never did. And one of the things that
2:05:18popped up was go storm chasing with Josh
2:05:21Payne in March.

2:05:27think would have been conducive for you

2:08:13And she ends up confiding in me that
2:08:15she's about to go back cuz she was
2:08:17working at Alabama at the time. She's
2:08:19about to go back home and tell Nick
2:08:21Saban that she's leaving.
2:08:23It's just not related to me. Like her
2:08:25dad her dad was not in a good way, so
2:08:27she wanted to go back home to caretake.
2:08:29>> Mhm. So you're dropping some heavy
2:08:31stuff.
2:08:32First off, like she dropped intimate
2:08:35details about her family.
2:08:37I'm a college football junkie. She works
2:08:40at Alabama for Nick Saban and confides
2:08:43in me, "Hey, no one knows this but my
2:08:44family, but I got to go tell coach Saban
2:08:46I'm I'm quitting."
2:08:48And that's not going to be a fun trip
2:08:49back to Tuscaloosa. And so that was that
2:08:52was what we did. Great food, great
2:08:54conversation. And I felt like at that
2:08:56point
2:08:57it's all downhill from here.

2:09:26honestly, given the circumstances, I
2:09:29would say it went as well as it could.
2:09:32It was heavy though. So it once you go
2:09:34My point is once you go through that in
2:09:36your first month to month and a half of
2:09:39dating, you're you're thinking like most
2:09:40of the time you get this speech that the
2:09:42first month is all sunshine, rainbows,
2:09:44and you're talking to a grizzled
2:09:47marriage veteran of 20 years and they're
2:09:49telling you tough times are to come.
2:09:50Just just be ready to weather the storm.
