- 0:14movement
- 0:15by alleging that numerous communist and
- 0:17soviet sympathizers
- 0:18had infiltrated the federal government
- 0:21universities
- 0:22and the arts at large after winning a
- 0:25u.s senate seat from his home state of
- 0:27wisconsin
- 0:28mccarthy's first three years in the
- 0:30senate were undistinguished
- 0:32until he rose to national fame in 1950
- 0:36when he asserted in his now infamous
- 0:38enemies within speech
- 0:40that he had a list of members of the
- 0:42communist party
- 0:43and members of a communist spy ring
- 0:45employed by the state department
- 0:47he would later broaden his finger
- 0:49pointing to include the administration
- 0:51of president harry s truman
- 0:54the voice of america political opponents
- 0:57suspected homosexuals and many a-list
- 0:59names in literature in hollywood
- 1:02including langston hughes and dorothy
- 1:04parker
- 1:05charlie chaplin orson welles
- 1:09leonard bernstein pete seeger
- 1:12burlives and lana horn
- 1:15known as mccarthyism joseph mccarthy
- 1:18used his seat
- 1:19on the senate permanent subcommittee on
- 1:21investigations
- 1:23where some of mccarthy's most publicized
- 1:25red scare accusations took place
- 1:28his downfall would come in the autumn of
- 1:311953
- 1:32during the 36-day army mccarthy hearings
- 1:36when mccarthy's committee began its
- 1:37ill-fated inquiry
- 1:39into the army signal core laboratory at
- 1:42fort monmouth
- 1:44broadcasted via the big three news
- 1:46networks
- 1:47public opinion began to see mccarthy as
- 1:49bullying reckless and dishonest
- 1:52while many republican lawmakers began to
- 1:54see mccarthy as a liability to the party
- 1:58on the 30th day of the army mccarthy
- 2:00hearing
- 2:01after mccarthy challenged the army's
- 2:03chief legal counsel

- 2:10welch had finally had enough of
- 2:12mccarthy's ruthless badgering and

- 2:331954 the senate voted to censor
- 2:36and later condemn mccarthy in a 67-22
- 2:40landslide vote among the charges against
- 2:44mccarthy
- 2:45was that he had used his committee
- 2:46authority as a lynching party
- 2:49making the committee into an unwitting
- 2:51handmaiden
- 2:53and an involuntary agent and attorneys
- 2:55in fact of the communist party
- 2:58three years later joseph mccarthy would
- 3:01die from alcoholism
- 3:03at just 48 years of age
