  1. 0:00the first thing i would say is that
  2. 0:03i'm not anti-feminist per se i mean i
  3. 0:06think the idea that
  4. 0:08the world would benefit from the
  5. 0:11movement of talent from both sexes into
  6. 0:13the workplace as rapidly as possible is
  7. 0:16something that anyone with any sense
  8. 0:17should
  9. 0:18share given the rather
  10. 0:21the rarity of talent and the necessity
  11. 0:23for
  12. 0:24for utilizing it
  13. 0:26i do stand by my original statement
  14. 0:28though that there's a brand of more
  15. 0:30radical feminism that that insists that
  16. 0:33our culture is best characterized as an
  17. 0:35oppressive patriarchy and i think that
  18. 0:37first of all that that's an appalling
  19. 0:39sociological doctrine and i think it has
  20. 0:41very negative psychological effects and
  21. 0:43they won't be limited to men because ins
  22. 0:46if it's true that there's something
  23. 0:48toxic let's say about masculinity per se
  24. 0:52what that will inevitably mean is that
  25. 0:54as women adopt more masculine roles
  26. 0:57traditionally what is that toxicity
  27. 0:59somehow going to go away but that's a
  28. 1:01straw man because no one says there's
  29. 1:02anything toxic about masculinity per se
  30. 1:05what do you mean no one says that the
  31. 1:06term exists
  32. 1:08how is that a strong man but where did
  33. 1:13about forms of masculinity that are
  34. 1:14harmful to men and women it's not about
  35. 1:16masculinity per se you must know that i
  36. 1:18read the american psychological
  37. 1:19association guidelines for the treatment
  38. 1:21of boys and men and i know perfectly
  39. 1:22well that this is no strong straw man
  40. 1:25and it's not only devoted towards what
  41. 1:27you might describe as the more
  42. 1:28aggressive ends of masculine behavior
  43. 1:30it's aimed at at masculinity in a much
  44. 1:33broader in a much broader range of
  45. 1:35there's a much broader range of
  46. 1:37accusations that are underlying that are
  47. 1:39under the surface than that
  48. 1:40and so i don't see in what way at all
  49. 1:42that it's a stroke okay i'm just going
  50. 1:44to pause
  51. 1:46catherine mcgregor and catherine i mean
  52. 1:48you've you've lived on both sides of the
  53. 1:50gender fence
  54. 1:51so um what are your thoughts on on these
  55. 1:54issues and just go back to the question
  56. 1:55i don't know whether that qualifies me
  57. 1:57or disqualifies me frankly
  58. 1:59sorry guys i ratted on the team but not
  59. 2:04not for any sociological reasons
  60. 2:05intensely personal i gather we might
  61. 2:07address that but
  62. 2:08look i i i'm not entirely out of
  63. 2:10sympathy with jordan's critique i i
  64. 2:14i'm the oldest person on this panel by
  65. 2:16you tony and in my lifetime i've
  66. 2:19[Laughter]
  67. 2:21i've seen uh
  68. 2:23you know rolling institutional crises
  69. 2:26through the west you know the great
  70. 2:28american settlement based on britain
  71. 2:30woods and nato and the
  72. 2:32united nations and so on is fraying
  73. 2:34globally in the area that i can talk
  74. 2:36about with some authority we're seeing a
  75. 2:38dissolving global order now with the
  76. 2:40rise of two
  77. 2:42autocratic totalitarian capitalist
  78. 2:44states which is replicating the
  79. 2:46conditions of the 1930 and i gather
  80. 2:48we're not doing the geo strategic stuff
  81. 2:50but i think it's very alarming
  82. 2:52when robert f kennedy who was my
  83. 2:54political hero
  84. 2:56was running for the presidency of the
  85. 2:57united states in 1968
  86. 3:00he addressed disenfranchised americans
  87. 3:04who were wearing the backlash from from
  88. 3:08many white men who were losing their
  89. 3:10jobs or perceiving that they were losing
  90. 3:11their jobs
  91. 3:13the deindustrialization of the west as
  92. 3:16jobs are exported to the developing
  93. 3:18world um all of these factors are
  94. 3:21bobby kennedy said it wasn't jermaine
  95. 3:23greer that said it he said when you
  96. 3:24remove from the man the right to stand
  97. 3:26before his family as a breadwinner and
  98. 3:28people will say that's patriarchy that's
  99. 3:30your minute by the way so all right well
  100. 3:31i'll shut up but
  101. 3:34the
  102. 3:34the removal of meaningful work amongst
  103. 3:38especially unskilled men has a political
  104. 3:40consequence and it's been washing
  105. 3:42through the american system since 1980
  106. 3:44with the reagan democrats the fraying of
  107. 3:46the new deal coalition
  108. 3:48i don't entirely agree with jordan's
  109. 3:50analysis but the problem can't be
  110. 3:52gainsaid
  111. 3:53and three million books later in 50
  112. 3:55languages or whatever it is i bought
  113. 3:58your book by the way and you're out
  114. 4:00selling shane warren now that's a
  115. 4:01culturally specific reference
  116. 4:03that delights me in two ways because in
  117. 4:06australian cricket no one has more
  118. 4:08bleached blonde hair
  119. 4:10or has had more work done than i but one
  120. 4:12is a close
  121. 4:15we should put that out on twitter
