- 0:03You really want to be a part of his
- 0:04success story. And it just really
- 0:07rejuvenates and inspires all of us. I'm
- 0:09Jeff Shilt, I'm a pediatric orthopedic
- 0:11surgeon and the president of Texas
- 0:12Children's in Austin. So, the care that
- 0:14we're bringing to Austin is elevating
- 0:16the care for kids with cerebral palsy
- 0:18and other conditions that require really
- 0:21complex multi-disciplinary care. Meeting
- 0:24Jonah for the first time, I knew that he
- 0:25was really struggling with a lot of
- 0:27musculoskeletal impairments. And so,
- 0:29what we really do is focus on having
- 0:33multi-specialists come together and then
- 0:36decide on the treatment we provide them.
- 0:38So, I met Jonah back in 2023.
- 0:41Dr. Shilt and our PM&R team had started
- 0:45this multi-disciplinary spasticity
- 0:47clinic. And Jonah was one of those
- 0:49patients that I met through that clinic.
- 0:52I'm Dr. Debshau Patel. I'm a pediatric
- 0:54neurosurgeon and I'm also medical
- 0:56director for neurosurgery at Texas
- 0:58Children's Hospital in Austin. We came
- 1:01up with a plan that included
- 1:03neurosurgery, PM&R, and orthopedic
- 1:06surgery as well as rehabilitation.
- 1:09So, Jonah's procedure from neurosurgery
- 1:11side was focal selective dorsal
- 1:14rhizotomy.
- 1:16This procedure is not available at all
- 1:18the hospitals in the United States. And
- 1:21I'm able to do this because I'm at Texas
- 1:24Children's Hospital. It's one of the
- 1:25pioneering hospitals in this procedure.
- 1:28For Jonah, this shows how much research
- 1:31has come to help patients in their
- 1:35outcomes. I think research is synonymous
- 1:37with
- 1:39neuro surgery and Texas Children's
- 1:40Hospital. Because in order to do the
- 1:43best for children, you have to know
- 1:46what's out there.
- 1:48Jonah had a really complex
- 1:50musculoskeletal set of deficiencies
- 1:53in essence because of his underlying
- 1:56medical disorders. And so, what we were
- 1:58able to do is go back and realign all
- 2:01these different bones and joints to
- 2:03transform and and impact his life in
- 2:05such a positive fashion. We're always
- 2:07grateful that the families here in
- 2:09Austin come to us and entrust their
- 2:11care. And the reality is if you're the
- 2:13best in Texas, you're the best anywhere
- 2:15in the country, maybe in the world.
- 2:18We all think about this a lot. Like,
- 2:20what brings you to the top, right? I
- 2:23think we are able to coordinate a very
- 2:28comprehensive and collaborative plan
- 2:30that's very particular for each child.
- 2:33I'm thankful for so many people here. I
- 2:36don't think anything can replace
- 2:40what Texas Children's Hospital provides.
- 2:42I am so grateful for our patients, our
- 2:46staff, faculty, and our system. Um we're
- 2:50all here just to elevate the care. It's
- 2:52truly an honor to be part of that, and I
- 2:54couldn't be more grateful to
- 2:56wake up every day and be part of this
- 2:57team.
