  1. 0:01the race to the moon became a symbol of
  2. 0:04the Cold War and the heroism of
  3. 0:07America's astronauts in venturing into
  4. 0:09that board is too often forgotten this
  5. 0:13program reminds us of their bravery the
  6. 0:19mission had been a success but I wasn't
  7. 0:21quite done there was one parting
  8. 0:24moonshot he wanted to make rice to be
  9. 0:38out maybe Alan Shepard will tell us for
  10. 0:43the first time what what the brand of
  11. 0:45that golf ball was hit on the mood nice
  12. 0:47nice try job I think the real thing is
  13. 0:50the truth of how far it went we could
  14. 0:53get all different story I've got a great
  15. 1:00job and with this close out our Shepherd
  16. 1:04not a chore to score and seven years
  17. 1:06becomes the undisputed leader in time
  18. 1:08spent walking working on the moon three
  19. 1:12two one

  21. 1:22that's such a beautiful sight where
  22. 1:24you're coming up off the moon and you're
  23. 1:26going so fast I mean it is so beautiful
  24. 1:28and I said al if you got something
  25. 1:31prophetic to say and he looked over at
  26. 1:34me and he said Stu you know me better
  27. 1:36than that and that's typical out one of
  28. 1:43the moments which I shall never forget
  29. 1:45occurred three weeks after the return
  30. 1:48from the moon and my father and I were
  31. 1:50just having a little brandy in the
  32. 1:52living room and out of the blue he said
  33. 1:56do you remember when you first called us
  34. 1:59back in nineteen fifty-nine and said you
  35. 2:03were going to become an astronaut I said
  36. 2:05yes sir and he said do you remember what
  37. 2:08I said I said yes sir I certainly do you
  38. 2:12were not in favor of it and he raised
  39. 2:15his last and said I was wrong
  40. 2:21it's all he had to say here to accept
  41. 2:32from moonshot are supervising producer
  42. 2:35John Savage director Kurt wolfinger and
  43. 2:37the first American in space Alan Shepard
  44. 3:08the right before we came up al said he
  45. 3:11needed a few minutes to visit the men's
  46. 3:13room and I said no way there's so many
  47. 3:19people to thank and if so many people
  48. 3:22have before me thank members of their

  58. 3:53when he saw one and get the book
  59. 3:55moonshot pat mitchell and vivian
  60. 3:59schiller my friend and colleague John
  61. 4:02Savage who who said he didn't really
  62. 4:04have a lot to say which is a first but
  63. 4:07most of all it's an honor to share the
  64. 4:10stage not only with the other winners
  65. 4:12but with Alan Shepard

  67. 4:26gentlemen I am happy that John Savage
  68. 4:28from Turner is here today as well as
  69. 4:31Kirk because it proves that with a
  70. 4:34dedicated producer and a talented
  71. 4:38director and a little bit of makeup that
  72. 4:42even a broken-down fighter pilot can
  73. 4:45look good on behalf of my colleagues who
  74. 4:50participated in one of man's greatest
  75. 4:53adventures landing on the moon I want to
  76. 4:58thank the Peabody committee for
  77. 4:59recognizing moonshot here today thank
