- 0:00John [music]
- 0:016:1 After these things, Jesus went away
- 0:04to the other side of the Sea of Galilee
- 0:06or Tiberias. A large [music] crowd
- 0:09followed him because they saw the signs
- 0:11which he was performing on those who
- 0:13were sick. Then Jesus went up on the
- 0:16mountain and there sat down with his
- 0:18disciples. Now the Passover, the feast
- 0:20of the Jews, was near. Therefore Jesus
- 0:23lifting up his eyes and seeing that a
- 0:26large crowd was coming to him said to
- 0:28[music] Philillip, "Where are we to buy
- 0:30bread so that these may eat?"
- 0:33This he was saying to test him, for he
- 0:36himself knew what he was [music]
- 0:38intending to do. Philip answered him,
- 0:41"200 dinari worth of bread is not
- 0:43sufficient for them for everyone to
- 0:45receive a little." One of his disciples,
- 0:48Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to
- 0:50him, "There is a lad here who has five
- 0:53barley loaves and two fish. But what are
- 0:56these for so many people?" It's
- 0:59interesting the [music] details that
- 1:00emerge in John's telling of this. He
- 1:03tells us that it's Philillip. He tells
- 1:05us that it's Andrew. He tells us [music]
- 1:06that it's a lad. He tells us that the
- 1:08loaves were barley loaves. None of these
- 1:11details emerge in the other gospels.
- 1:14Jesus said, "Have the people sit down."
- 1:18Now there was much grass in the place.
- 1:21So the men sat down in number about
- 1:245,000.
- 1:26Jesus took the loaves and having given
- 1:28thanks, he distributed to those who were
- 1:31seated. Likewise also the fish as much
- 1:34as they wanted. When they were filled,
- 1:37he said to his disciples, "Gather up the
- 1:40leftover fragments so that nothing will
- 1:42be lost.
- 1:43So they gathered them up and filled 12
- 1:47baskets with fragments from the five
- 1:49barley loaves which were left over by
- 1:52those who had eaten. Therefore, when the
- 1:55people saw the sign which he had
- 1:57performed, they said, "This is truly the
- 2:00prophet who is to come into the world."
- 2:05So Jesus perceiving that they were
- 2:07intending to come and take him by force
- 2:11to make him king withdrew again to the
- 2:14mountain by himself alone.
- 2:17So here we're going to have a theme in
- 2:19this chapter.
- 2:21Political expectations colliding [music]
- 2:24with spiritual fulfillment.
- 2:27Jesus is not coming to free them from
- 2:30the enemy of Rome. He is coming to free
- 2:33them from the enemy of fear and sin and
- 2:36death. But they want a political
- 2:39deliverance. So in this 15th verse, it
- 2:43says that Jesus perceived that they were
- 2:46intending to come and take him by force.
- 2:52They were going to grab him physically
- 2:56and force a crown upon his head.
- 3:00That's how frustrated they were that he
- 3:04wouldn't take the political role that he
- 3:08clearly had the support of the people to
- 3:11fulfill.
- 3:13But if he had taken that political role,
- 3:15he would have fulfilled the devil's
- 3:17invitation to become one of the rulers
- 3:21over the kingdoms of this world.
- 3:25Now when evening came, his disciples
- 3:27went down to the sea, and after getting
- 3:29into a boat, they started to cross the
- 3:32sea to Capernaum.
- 3:34It had already become dark, and Jesus
- 3:36had not yet come to them. The sea began
- 3:39to be stirred up because a strong wind
- 3:42was blowing.
- 3:43Then when they had rode about three or
- 3:47four miles, they saw Jesus walking on
- 3:50the sea and drawing near to the boat,
- 3:52and they were frightened. But he said to
- 3:55them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."
- 3:59So they were willing to receive him into
- 4:01the boat, and immediately the boat was
- 4:03at the land to which they were going.
- 4:06The next day, the crowd that stood on
- 4:07the other side of the sea saw that there
- 4:10was no other small boat there except
- 4:13one, and that Jesus had not entered with
- 4:15his disciples into the boat, but that
- 4:18his disciples had gone away alone.
- 4:21There came other small boats from
- 4:23Tiberias near the place where they ate
- 4:26the bread after the Lord had given
- 4:28thanks. So when the crowd saw that Jesus
- 4:30was not there nor his disciples, they
- 4:32themselves got into the small boats and
- 4:35came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
- 4:39When they found him on the other side of
- 4:40the sea, they said they said to him,
- 4:43"Rabbi, when did you get here?"
- 4:48Jesus answered and said, "Truly, truly,
- 4:51I say to you, you seek me not because
- 4:54you saw the signs, but because you ate
- 4:57of the loaves and were filled."
- 5:00He's saying, "You want something natural
- 5:03from me." And he's going to use the
- 5:06metaphor of the feeding the 5000s. He's
- 5:09going to use that as a metaphor of them
- 5:12seeking a natural answer when God is
- 5:15providing a spiritual answer.
- 5:17So right here we have the framework of
- 5:21wanting natural bread,
- 5:23not the spiritual reality that Jesus is
- 5:26bringing. So he says, "You seek me
- 5:29because you ate of the loaves and were
- 5:31filled. Do not work for the food which
- 5:35perishes,
- 5:37but for the food which endures to
- 5:39eternal life, which the Son of Man will
- 5:41give to you. for on him the father God
- 5:45has set his seal.
- 5:48So he's saying you guys are working,
- 5:51you're endeavoring, you're laboring for
- 5:53the wrong food, and you should be
- 5:56seeking a different kind of food. The
- 5:58food he spoke of in chapter 4 of doing
- 6:01the will of God.
- 6:03Therefore, they said to him, "What shall
- 6:05we do so that we may work the works of
- 6:08God?" Like, okay, how do we do this?
- 6:12Jesus answered and said to them, "This
- 6:14is the work of God that you believe in
- 6:17him whom [clears throat] he has sent."
- 6:22You believe and act on and accept the
- 6:26anointing of Almighty Father in the life
- 6:30of this visible man that you know as
- 6:33Jesus. So they said to him, "What then
- 6:36do you do for a sign so that we may see
- 6:38and believe you? What work do you
- 6:40perform?
- 6:43It's just a ploy. They want him to do
- 6:45things for them.
- 6:48Our fathers ate mana in the wilderness.
- 6:50As it is written, he gave them bread out
- 6:52of heaven to eat. So, they're thinking
- 6:55about the natural bread again. They're
- 6:57thinking about the loaves and fishes
- 6:58again. Maybe their bellies are growling
- 7:00again.
- 7:01Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say
- 7:05to you, it is not Moses who has given
- 7:09you the bread out of heaven, but it is
- 7:11my father who gives you the true bread
- 7:15out of heaven." [clears throat]
- 7:17So, here we have a physical bread versus
- 7:21a true bread.
- 7:24We would think that the spiritual bread
- 7:26well was the spiritual bread, but the
- 7:29true bread was the barley stuff. It was
- 7:31the wheat stuff. But he says, you've got
- 7:35physical and then you've got true bread.
- 7:38For Jesus, the spiritual is more real
- 7:42than the natural. Truly, truly, I say to
- 7:45you, it is not Moses who has given you
- 7:47the bread out of heaven, but it is my
- 7:49father who gives you the true bread out
- 7:51of heaven. For the bread of God is that
- 7:55which comes down out of heaven and gives
- 7:57life to the world. It's the incarnated
- 8:01presence of God.
- 8:03Then they said to him, "Lord, always
- 8:06give us this bread."
- 8:09Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of
- 8:12life.
- 8:14He who comes to me will not hunger, and
- 8:17he who believes in me will never thirst.
- 8:21But I said to you that you have seen me
- 8:24and yet do not believe.
- 8:27They are able to visually see his
- 8:30physical form, but they don't believe
- 8:32the one who's living in him.
- 8:38All that the father gives me will come
- 8:41to me. And the one who comes to me, I
- 8:44will certainly not cast away.
- 8:48And the one who comes to me, I will
- 8:50certainly not cast out.
- 8:53For I have come down from heaven not to
- 8:56do my own will, but the will of him who
- 8:59sent me. This is tapping in to the
- 9:01conflict in the previous chapter 5 when
- 9:04he healed on the Sabbath and they
- 9:06accused him of doing the works and he's
- 9:09saying, "I'm still doing the will of him
- 9:11who sent me. This is the will of him who
- 9:14sent me.
- 9:17Here's his mission. This is the will of
- 9:19him who sent me that of all he has given
- 9:22me, I lose nothing but raise it up on
- 9:24the last day. For this is the will of my
- 9:27father that everyone who beholds the son
- 9:32and believes in him will have eternal
- 9:35life and I myself will raise him up on
- 9:38the last day. Now this is shockingly
- 9:42similar to the previous chapter when he
- 9:44tells them they will escape judgment and
- 9:47death if they can hear the son and
- 9:50believe the father. Here he's saying the
- 9:53exact same thing. This is the will of my
- 9:55father.
- 9:57Everyone who beholds the son
- 10:01and believes in him
- 10:04will have eternal life. and I myself
- 10:07will raise him up on the last day.
- 10:10Therefore, the Jews were grumbling about
- 10:12him because he said, "I am the bread
- 10:14that came down out of heaven." They were
- 10:17saying, "Is not this Jesus the son of
- 10:20Joseph?"
- 10:22They can only behold the son. They
- 10:25cannot believe in the voice that is in
- 10:27him.
- 10:29Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph,
- 10:32whose father and mother we know? How
- 10:36does he now say, "I have come down out
- 10:38of heaven."
- 10:40Jesus answered and said to them, "Do not
- 10:43grumble among yourselves.
- 10:45No one can come to me unless the Father
- 10:48who sent me draws him, and I will raise
- 10:51him up on the last day." If you don't
- 10:54love the voice of the Father, if you
- 10:57don't know the voice of the Father,
- 10:58you're not going to be drawn to Jesus
- 11:01because he is the voice of the father.
- 11:05So if you don't hear the father and
- 11:07believe the father when you hear
- 11:09Christ's voice then of course you don't
- 11:12get it.
- 11:14It is written in the prophets and they
- 11:17shall all be taught of God. Therefore
- 11:21who has heard and learned from the
- 11:23father comes to me.
- 11:26Those who love and have relationship
- 11:27with f with the father are going to
- 11:29recognize him in Jesus.
- 11:33Not that anyone has seen the Father
- 11:35except the one who is from God, he has
- 11:37seen the Father.
- 11:39Truly, truly, I say to you, he who
- 11:42believes has eternal life. I am the
- 11:45bread of life.
- 11:49You want life in you? You can't have
- 11:51life without eating, can you?
- 11:54But Jesus is saying that life is
- 11:56temporal.
- 11:58Food gives you nourishment to keep your
- 12:01physical body alive and active. But he's
- 12:04saying if you'll receive of me, you're
- 12:07going to have life also. But it's not
- 12:10temporal life to keep your physical body
- 12:12alive and active. It's eternal life. If
- 12:16you will receive of Jesus, you're going
- 12:18to have life inside of you. Eternal
- 12:21life.
- 12:23Just like a person is going to die
- 12:25without food, you're going to die if you
- 12:29don't accept the grace that is coming of
- 12:33the father in human form.
- 12:35He is the father's spiritual grace made
- 12:40audible, visible, tangible,
- 12:43receivable in human form.
- 12:48Your fathers ate mana in the wilderness
- 12:51and they died.
- 12:54So he's saying
- 12:56physical food didn't keep them alive
- 12:59forever.
- 13:01Your fathers ate mana in the wilderness
- 13:03and they died. Physical food didn't keep
- 13:05them alive forever. This is the bread
- 13:08which comes down out of heaven so that
- 13:10one may eat it and not die. I am the
- 13:14living bread that came down out of
- 13:17heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he
- 13:20will live forever. And the bread also
- 13:23which I will give for the life of the
- 13:25world is my flesh.
- 13:28So [snorts] that he's saying you can't
- 13:31have the father
- 13:33outside of the form that he has taken in
- 13:36Christ. If you're not going to accept
- 13:39the incarnated God, you're not going to
- 13:43get God at all. You're going to die in
- 13:46your sins.
- 13:48Then the Jews began to argue with one
- 13:50another, saying, "How can this man give
- 13:52us his flesh to eat?"
- 13:56But think about it, please.
- 13:59He's saying you can't internalize the
- 14:03spiritual grace of the father except in
- 14:07the form of a human flesh that he is
- 14:10coming in.
- 14:13You've got to accept that this is how
- 14:15you metabolize spiritually what you need
- 14:19from the father.
- 14:21You've got to accept the father in the
- 14:24flesh. All the fullness of the father
- 14:27dwelt in Jesus in bodily form.
- 14:30But even the body of Christ is an
- 14:33expression of this reality
- 14:36because he says whoever receives you
- 14:38receives me and him who sent me.
- 14:42Paul told tells the Galatians you
- 14:44received me as Christ Jesus himself.
- 14:47Jesus said whatever you do to the least
- 14:49of these my brethren you do to me.
- 14:52So Paul says to the church, we are that
- 14:58one bread, that one loaf.
- 15:03So we have got to partake of each
- 15:06other's lives as these small fragments
- 15:10of this composite loaf that is Christ.
- 15:14That is the invisible, spiritual God
- 15:19made audible, visible, tangible,
- 15:23receivable in our world. This is what it
- 15:26means to accept that Jesus Christ is
- 15:30coming in our human flesh. He continues
- 15:33to come in our human flesh.
- 15:37We want to receive a God we cannot see,
- 15:40but we are very reluctant to receive
- 15:42from people we can see. They couldn't
- 15:45receive from the perfect Christ in who
- 15:48dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead.
- 15:51How much harder is it for us to receive
- 15:53from imperfect people the portions, the
- 15:57small deposits of Christ's gift in
- 16:01composite form.
- 16:03Then Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly,
- 16:06I say to you, unless you eat the flesh
- 16:10of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
- 16:14you have no life in yourselves."
- 16:16He's saying, "Unless you completely
- 16:19accept
- 16:21God incarnate."
- 16:23The word incarnate has the same root as
- 16:26flesh.
- 16:28Carnal or carne meaning flesh. God
- 16:32incarnate.
- 16:35Unless you eat my flesh and drink my
- 16:37blood, you have no life in yourselves.
- 16:40Now, he's not speaking in a physical
- 16:42sense. He's speaking in a spiritual
- 16:45sense.
- 16:47He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
- 16:49has eternal life, and I will raise him
- 16:51up on the last day. For my flesh is true
- 16:55food, and my blood is true drink.
- 16:59He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
- 17:01abides in me and I in him. As the living
- 17:06Father sent me, and I live because of
- 17:09the Father, so he who eats me, he also
- 17:13will live because of me. This is the
- 17:16bread which comes down out of heaven.
- 17:18Not as the fathers ate and died. He who
- 17:22eats this bread will live forever. So
- 17:25he's saying the father is living and I
- 17:28am alive because his spirit is in me. I
- 17:31live because of him. But if you will
- 17:33receive him in this human form, you also
- 17:37will have life. But you can't receive or
- 17:41internalize the father except by
- 17:44receiving him in incarnate form from
- 17:48this point on. This is the way the
- 17:52father is coming to his people from this
- 17:54moment on. There's no other way. There's
- 17:57no other door. There's no other means.
- 18:00And he's using words that are
- 18:01purposefully distasteful, but they are
- 18:05shockingly vivid
- 18:07in terms of how we must metabolize
- 18:11the grace and presence of the invisible
- 18:14God. So that he does not become an idol
- 18:17of our own minds, an idol of our own
- 18:20making and remaking in our own little
- 18:23temples of religiosity, but instead he
- 18:27still continues to be real and present
- 18:30and visible and tangible in our world.
- 18:34These things he said in the synagogue as
- 18:37he taught in Capernaum. Therefore, many
- 18:41of his disciples when they heard this
- 18:43said, "This is a difficult statement.
- 18:47Who can listen to it?"
- 18:50But Jesus, conscious that his disciples
- 18:52grumbled at this, said to them, "Does
- 18:56this cause you to stumble?
- 18:59What then? If you see the Son of Man
- 19:01ascending to where he was before,
- 19:05it is the spirit who gives life.
- 19:08The flesh profits nothing.
- 19:12The words that I have spoken to you are
- 19:14spirit and are life.
- 19:17But there are some of you who do not
- 19:18believe.
- 19:21Okay, this is fascinating because he's
- 19:23just told them. [sighs and gasps]
- 19:26Okay, you got to get this.
- 19:29People hear him saying that you've got
- 19:31to eat my flesh and drink my blood and
- 19:33they freak out. They say this is a hard
- 19:35saying and who can stand it? And Jesus
- 19:39says, "Does this cause you to stumble?"
- 19:42The literal there is, "Does this offend
- 19:44you?"
- 19:45He says, "Well, then what are you going
- 19:47to do when you see the son of man
- 19:49ascending into heaven?"
- 19:51Now, some of his disciples were going to
- 19:53see him ascend into heaven
- 19:56as it describes in Acts 1. Correct? Why
- 20:00would they get offended at seeing him
- 20:02ascend into heaven?
- 20:06Because they want him to be their
- 20:08political hero. They have a natural
- 20:11kingdom in their minds. They have
- 20:14natural bread in their minds. They have
- 20:16a natural king in their minds. They've
- 20:19just tried to forcibly make him king.
- 20:21And he had to go he had to go hide
- 20:23himself to avoid it.
- 20:27So when the Son of Man ascends,
- 20:30he's ascending to glory.
- 20:33He's being exalted to the highest place.
- 20:36He's ascending to the the throne of the
- 20:38father where the lamb is going to sit on
- 20:40the throne of God, the one throne in
- 20:42heaven.
- 20:44This is the most powerful, glorious
- 20:47crowning moment in all of history when
- 20:51Jesus ascended. But if you have your
- 20:55affections on what is natural and
- 20:57physical and temporal,
- 21:00you're going to be disappointed,
- 21:02offended, let down as he's let up into
- 21:06heaven.
- 21:09So he says, "What are you going to do
- 21:10when you see that happen?" This is not
- 21:13random. He's pointing to the fact that
- 21:15they have the wrong desire and
- 21:18expectation.
- 21:19And then he makes this statement. He
- 21:21says, "It is the spirit who gives life.
- 21:23The flesh profits nothing." You're like,
- 21:26"Well, that makes sense if he's talking
- 21:30about why they're going to be offended
- 21:32at his ascension instead of going to
- 21:34Jerusalem to create a political
- 21:36kingdom." But I thought he was just
- 21:38saying that they needed to eat his
- 21:39flesh. So why is he saying the flesh
- 21:42profits nothing? Well, he's saying the
- 21:45reason you need to accept the flesh is
- 21:48not for the flesh. It's not the point,
- 21:51but it's for what the flesh delivers,
- 21:55and that is the spirit. The flesh is the
- 21:58conduit. It's the the spirit made
- 22:01visible.
- 22:03Do you get it? And he's saying, you are
- 22:05actually infatuated with my flesh. You
- 22:08want me to be your physical king, but I
- 22:11want you to understand
- 22:13that if you'll receive who I am, it's
- 22:16not about my flesh. It's about God in
- 22:19me. It's about the spirit in me. And
- 22:22that's what this is all about. The flesh
- 22:24profits nothing. It is the spirit who
- 22:26gives life. The words that I have spoken
- 22:28to you are spirit. You can't even
- 22:31interpret what I've said fleshly.
- 22:34You can't even interpret what I've said
- 22:36through a fleshly framework. It doesn't
- 22:38make sense.
- 22:40It makes you turn up your nose and walk
- 22:42away. But if you see it spiritually
- 22:46speaking, it makes perfect sense. So,
- 22:48we're supposed to eat his flesh in a
- 22:51spiritual way,
- 22:54but his flesh is a physical thing.
- 22:58We're supposed to know him, not
- 23:00according to our flesh, but according to
- 23:03the spirit that is coming through him to
- 23:05us.
- 23:07There are some of you who do not
- 23:09believe, for Jesus knew from the
- 23:11beginning who they were who did not
- 23:13believe, and who it was who would betray
- 23:16him. And he said, I don't think it's a
- 23:18coincidence here that he brings in
- 23:20betrayal in this chapter where he makes
- 23:23it clear that he's coming to bring a
- 23:26spiritual reality, not the political
- 23:29kingdom. That's why Judas is going to
- 23:32betray him because he doesn't want what
- 23:34Jesus is bringing. He wants him to be
- 23:36somebody else. And he was saying for
- 23:38this reason I have said to you that no
- 23:41one can come to me unless [music] it has
- 23:43been granted him from the father.
- 23:47You don't make the connection with me.
- 23:49You don't covenant with me. You don't
- 23:51accept me. You don't [music] see me. You
- 23:53don't appreciate me unless you first
- 23:55know the voice of the father and
- 23:57recognize his voice in me.
- 24:01As a result of this, many of his
- 24:03disciples withdrew and were not walking
- 24:06with him anymore.
- 24:11Jesus said to the twel,
- 24:13"You do not want to go away also, do
- 24:15you?"
- 24:18Simon Peter answered him, "Lord,
- 24:21to whom shall we go? You have the
- 24:25[music] words of eternal life.
- 24:29We have believed and have come to know
- 24:32that you are the holy one of God.
- 24:34Jesus answered them,
- 24:37"Did I myself not choose you, the twel?"
- 24:41And yet one of you is a devil.
- 24:45Now he meant [music] Judas the son of
- 24:46Simon a scariot. For he, one of the
- 24:49twel, was going to betray him.
- 24:54There are some people like Peter
- 24:58who know the voice of the father and
- 25:01they are drawn to him because of the
- 25:05voice of the father. We have come to
- 25:07[music] know and believe that you are
- 25:10the holy one of God because you have the
- 25:13words of eternal life. Peter gets it.
- 25:18The father is life. You are [music]
- 25:20speaking his words. We are eating those
- 25:23words as true mana. And now the life is
- 25:25inside of us. Judas didn't get it
- 25:29because Judas didn't love the voice of
- 25:31the father. And so he's going to be
- 25:34disappointed. He's going to be offended
- 25:36at these words at the ascension. It's
- 25:38[music] not what he wants.
