- 0:00John chapter 3. There was a man of the
- 0:03Pharisees named Nicodemus,
- 0:06a ruler of the Jews.
- 0:09This man came to Jesus [music] by night
- 0:12and said to him,
- 0:13"Rabbi,
- 0:15we know that you have come from God as a
- 0:18teacher,
- 0:19for no one can do these signs that you
- 0:22do unless God [music] is with him."
- 0:27Jesus answered and said to him,
- 0:29"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one
- 0:32is born [music] again, he cannot see the
- 0:35kingdom of God."
- 0:39So, right off the bat,
- 0:41we need to answer some questions. Who is
- 0:43Nicodemus?
- 0:45This chapter tells us that he [music] is
- 0:46a ruler of the Jews and a Pharisee.
- 0:50But, the other gospel tells us that he
- 0:53belongs to the council.
- 0:56That means that
- 0:57>> [music]
- 0:57>> he is a member of the senior most and
- 1:01most powerful body of of authority
- 1:04[music] in the Jewish nation.
- 1:07So, he's like a senator. He sits on the
- 1:10Sanhedrin, which is like the Jewish
- 1:12Senate.
- 1:14And he comes to Jesus at night.
- 1:16And you say, "Why did he come at night?
- 1:19Was it because he was personally
- 1:20embarrassed?" No.
- 1:23Listen to the way he speaks. He says,
- 1:26"We know
- 1:28that you are from [music] God,
- 1:30for no one could do the things you do
- 1:32unless God was with him."
- 1:34What he's saying is, "We in the
- 1:37Sanhedrin, we who hold political power
- 1:40and sway,
- 1:41we who are interested in throwing off
- 1:44Rome
- 1:45and looking for the coming kingdom, we
- 1:48think you might be our man.
- 1:50We think you might be the guy we should
- 1:52back,
- 1:54perhaps in a political revolt."
- 1:56What he's doing is tantamount to
- 1:58treason.
- 1:59He's suggesting that Jesus might be the
- 2:03one to help them get rid of Rome.
- 2:06So, the interest in the kingdom, he
- 2:08doesn't say, "I think you might be the
- 2:11guy to lead the revolt or I think
- 2:12[music] you might be the guy to launch
- 2:14the kingdom."
- 2:16He just says, "We know that you're from
- 2:18God." But, the fact that Jesus
- 2:21immediately cuts to the chase and says,
- 2:23"You can't see the kingdom."
- 2:25means that's what his real question was.
- 2:27Jesus perceived his real question
- 2:30beneath the compliment.
- 2:31>> [music]
- 2:32>> And, he doesn't really take the
- 2:33compliment.
- 2:35Nicodemus said to him,
- 2:37"How can a man be born when he is old?
- 2:41He cannot enter a second time into his
- 2:43mother's womb and be born, can he?"
- 2:47Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to
- 2:49you, unless one is born of water and the
- 2:52spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of
- 2:55God.
- 2:57That which is born of flesh is flesh.
- 3:00And, that which is born of spirit is
- 3:03spirit.
- 3:04Do not be amazed that I said to you,
- 3:07'You must be born again.'
- 3:09The wind blows where it wishes,
- 3:12and you hear the sound of it, but do not
- 3:15know where it comes from and where it is
- 3:17going.
- 3:19So, is everyone who is born of the
- 3:22spirit."
- 3:24Nicodemus said to him, "How can these
- 3:26things be?"
- 3:29So, there's a lot in this.
- 3:31Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night
- 3:34because he's
- 3:36potentially committing treason to
- 3:38suggest that Jesus would start a revolt
- 3:41or be the one they back against the
- 3:43Roman state.
- 3:44And, he speaks for the Senate. He says,
- 3:46"We know that you're from God."
- 3:48And, Jesus tells him, "The kingdom I
- 3:51came to bring, you can't see it. If it
- 3:54were right in front of you, you can't
- 3:56see it until you're changed.
- 3:59Cuz it's not a fleshly kingdom. It's a
- 4:01spiritual kingdom.
- 4:03And then he doubles down when Nicodemus
- 4:06is confused.
- 4:08If rebirth, if birth in the spirit were
- 4:10something that were happening
- 4:12to the Old Testament believers,
- 4:14Nicodemus would not be confused. He'd be
- 4:16like, "Well, sure, I'm born again."
- 4:19But he is utterly confounded. He does
- 4:21not understand what Jesus is talking
- 4:23about at all.
- 4:26And Jesus doubles down and he says,
- 4:29"Truly I say to you, unless one is born
- 4:30of water, referring to baptism, and the
- 4:33spirit, referring to spirit baptism, he
- 4:36cannot enter
- 4:37the kingdom of God."
- 4:39Why? He makes this statement, "That
- 4:42which is born of flesh is flesh.
- 4:45And that which is born of spirit is
- 4:47spirit." Why does he say that right in
- 4:50the middle?
- 4:51He's clearly saying if the kingdom were
- 4:53fleshly, you could see it in your
- 4:55current state. If the kingdom were
- 4:57natural, you wouldn't need to be born
- 4:59again. But because this kingdom is
- 5:01spiritual,
- 5:03in order to be awakened to it, in order
- 5:05to see it, you have to undergo a change.
- 5:08And this term born again,
- 5:11it's a positive, beautiful term that we
- 5:13use and look forward to and encourage
- 5:16people in,
- 5:17but it's not an encouraging term. He's
- 5:19telling a man who's old, "You've got to
- 5:22go all the way back. You've got to
- 5:24unlearn what you think you know. You've
- 5:26got to start over and become as a little
- 5:28child."
- 5:29That's not inspiring to someone who
- 5:32thinks they're standing on a platform of
- 5:34accumulated wisdom over an entire
- 5:36lifetime of learning.
- 5:39But it's what Jesus says is necessary
- 5:42in order to be in order to see the
- 5:45kingdom of God.
- 5:46He says, "Do not be amazed that I said
- 5:48you must be born again. The wind blows
- 5:51where it wishes. You know what that word
- 5:53wind is in the Greek?
- 5:54It's the word pneuma.
- 5:56And it means spirit. It's the word from
- 5:59which we get things like pneumatology.
- 6:01Now, Jesus is describing a phenomenon
- 6:03that's never happened before.
- 6:06But he says it's like the blowing of the
- 6:08wind and a very unique sound occurs. And
- 6:11that sound, you don't know where it's
- 6:12coming from and you don't know where
- 6:14it's going.
- 6:15This matches
- 6:17with startling accuracy exactly what
- 6:20Luke describes in the second chapter of
- 6:23Acts
- 6:24when the spirit was poured out and there
- 6:26was something like a wind blowing and
- 6:29the sound of speaking in tongues
- 6:30occurred. And you didn't know where it
- 6:32was coming from and you didn't know
- 6:33where it was going.
- 6:35But you heard the sound.
- 6:37And that word that he uses, the sound of
- 6:39it, is phone.
- 6:41And that is the exact same word that
- 6:43they use in the book of Acts to describe
- 6:45the sound of speaking in tongues, phone.
- 6:48And how would you describe speaking in
- 6:50tongues to someone who'd never
- 6:51experienced it? You'd say it was like
- 6:53the wind. You didn't know where these
- 6:55tongues were coming from and you didn't
- 6:56know where they were going, but a sound
- 6:58occurred with everyone who is born of
- 7:00the spirit.
- 7:02Nicodemus said to him,
- 7:03>> [clears throat]
- 7:04>> "How can these things be?"
- 7:06Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you
- 7:09the teacher of Israel and you don't
- 7:11understand these things?"
- 7:13Why did Jesus think that the teacher of
- 7:15Israel should understand these things?
- 7:18Because he should have known Joel
- 7:20chapter 2. He should have known Isaiah
- 7:22chapter 44.
- 7:24Ezekiel to 39.
- 7:26Zechariah.
- 7:28He should have known all the passages
- 7:29where the Lord said
- 7:31that his Messiah in the end was going to
- 7:34be an outpouring of the spirit. In the
- 7:36last day saith God, I will pour out my
- 7:39spirit on all flesh. He shouldn't have
- 7:41been looking for a political kingdom. He
- 7:43should have been looking for an
- 7:44outpouring of the spirit.
- 7:46That the dry places in the wildernesses
- 7:48were going to spring forth with the
- 7:49water of the spirit. That my spirit will
- 7:52never depart from your descendants
- 7:54forever. That I will put a new heart in
- 7:56you and give you a new spirit and cause
- 7:58you to walk in my statutes. Jeremiah,
- 8:01that you will all know me from the least
- 8:03to the greatest. In other words, Jesus
- 8:05is rebuking him for having a political
- 8:08expectation of the kingdom.
- 8:10And he's saying, "If you really knew
- 8:12your Bible,
- 8:13you would not be looking for a political
- 8:15answer when what God is wanting to do on
- 8:17the face of the earth is an outpouring
- 8:19of his spirit."
- 8:20"Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of
- 8:23what we know and testify of what we have
- 8:25seen, and you do not accept our
- 8:27testimony."
- 8:29I think in that he's referring to the
- 8:30miracles. He's referring to the working
- 8:33of the spirit. And the Pharisees and the
- 8:36Sadducees and the Sanhedrin aren't
- 8:38accepting that.
- 8:41And then he says, "If I told you earthly
- 8:42things and you did not believe, how will
- 8:44you believe if I tell you heavenly
- 8:46things?"
- 8:48He's telling him that what I've
- 8:49described to you about rebirth is going
- 8:50to happen on earth. It's going to happen
- 8:53in the upper room. It's going to happen
- 8:54on the day of Pentecost. It's not going
- 8:56to happen in the sweet by and by.
- 8:59He says, "No one has ascended into
- 9:00heaven, but he who descended from
- 9:03heaven, the Son of Man.
- 9:05As Moses lifted up the serpent in the
- 9:07wilderness,
- 9:08even so must the Son of Man be lifted up
- 9:12so that whoever believes will in him
- 9:16>> [clears throat]
- 9:16>> have eternal life."
- 9:18So,
- 9:20right here, he tells this guy
- 9:23that nothing you expect
- 9:27is preparing you for what is actually
- 9:29going to happen.
- 9:30It's not going to be a political
- 9:32kingdom. It's going to be a spiritual
- 9:33kingdom. You can't enter it through an
- 9:36agreement. You've got to enter it
- 9:37through a transformation that opens your
- 9:39eyes to the realm of the spirit and
- 9:41baptizes you in water and in spirit.
- 9:44I'm not bringing what you expect, he's
- 9:46saying.
- 9:47And then he tells him
- 9:49that as the teacher of Israel, he should
- 9:50know this, implying that it's all in the
- 9:52Bible.
- 9:54And then he says, "As Moses lifted up
- 9:56the serpent in the wilderness, even so
- 9:59must the Son of Man be lifted up." When
- 10:00did Moses lift up the serpent in the
- 10:03wilderness?
- 10:05When they were struck with judgment and
- 10:08plague and snake bites and
- 10:11horrible things were going through the
- 10:12camp. And where did that come from? It
- 10:15came from unbelief, didn't it?
- 10:17It came from grumbling and discontent at
- 10:20the way God was saving them, didn't it?
- 10:22[clears throat]
- 10:23So, he's telling Nicodemus, "Just like
- 10:26the children of Israel did not recognize
- 10:29their salvation and grumbled and
- 10:31complained against it, you Sanhedrin and
- 10:34you Pharisees, you want a political
- 10:36solution and you're going to grumble and
- 10:38you're going to complain
- 10:40and you're going to you're going to wish
- 10:41I was doing something that I'm not
- 10:43doing. And in the end,
- 10:45that grumbling spirit, that rebellion
- 10:47against God's ways, is going to lift up
- 10:50Jesus on the cross." Now, I ask you, was
- 10:54was the serpent a pretty sight for the
- 10:57children of Israel to look at?
- 11:00Was it, "Oh, wow, I want to make jewelry
- 11:02out of that. What a beautiful snake."
- 11:04No, those snakes were biting them and
- 11:06killing them.
- 11:07But God wanted the children of Israel to
- 11:10look
- 11:11at the outcome of their rebellion. And
- 11:14the snake was the symbol of their sin.
- 11:17He wanted them to face what their sin
- 11:20was in the eyes of God.
- 11:22And so, the cross is no prettier than
- 11:24the snake. The cross is a demonstration
- 11:27to us of what our sin is, our rebellion
- 11:31against God and the one whom he sends.
- 11:34That's what our sin did. It took the
- 11:36lamb of God. It took the healer.
- 11:39The one who forgave and cleansed the
- 11:40lepers. The one who taught. The one who
- 11:43loved and had compassion. And it nailed
- 11:46him to a tree.
- 11:47That's what our sin does. And so in
- 11:50facing our sin, we can come to
- 11:52repentance like they did when they faced
- 11:56the outcome of their transgression
- 11:59in the serpent. The serpent of their
- 12:01rebellion. So we have to also face that
- 12:04that brutal ugly cross is what we do to
- 12:08God. What we do to love and truth and
- 12:11righteousness.
- 12:13As Moses lifted up the serpent in the
- 12:15wilderness, even so must the son of man
- 12:17be lifted up so that whoever believes
- 12:20will in him have eternal life.
- 12:23For God so loved the world
- 12:27that he gave his only begotten son
- 12:31that whoever believes in him shall not
- 12:33perish but have eternal life.
- 12:36It doesn't say God so hated the world
- 12:39but decided to kill his son instead.
- 12:42It was God's love for the world. As 2
- 12:45Corinthians 5:19 says, God was in Christ
- 12:49reconciling the world to himself.
- 12:52So it was not wrath
- 12:54that caused the sacrifice, Christ's
- 12:57sacrifice on the cross.
- 12:59It was love.
- 13:01And it was not God who bludgeoned and
- 13:03killed Jesus.
- 13:05It was our sin. It was our rebellion. It
- 13:08was the institutionalized rebellion of
- 13:10man fighting with the one whom the Lord
- 13:13sent.
- 13:15Says whoever believes in him shall not
- 13:17perish but have eternal life.
- 13:20For God did not send the son into the
- 13:23world to judge the world but that the
- 13:26world might be saved through him.
- 13:28>> [clears throat]
- 13:29>> The purpose of Jesus' coming was not
- 13:31criticism and rejection,
- 13:34but salvation. But there will be
- 13:35rejection. How does that work?
- 13:37He who believes in him is not judged,
- 13:40but he who does not believe has been
- 13:42judged already,
- 13:44because he has not believed in the name
- 13:46of the only begotten Son of God.
- 13:49So, he says, "If you believe, you're not
- 13:51judged. But if you don't believe, you're
- 13:54already judged. The Son doesn't have to
- 13:56exhibit some wrath towards you. The
- 13:59Father doesn't have to have a remarkably
- 14:01intense bad attitude towards you.
- 14:04You have placed yourself outside of life
- 14:07of your own accord.
- 14:09You're condemned already.
- 14:11The The condition of unbelief doesn't
- 14:13need anything in order to be
- 14:16a judgment. It just needs to stay in
- 14:18unbelief, and you're going to perish."
- 14:22And he says, "This is the judgment."
- 14:25Now, the word that he's using here is
- 14:27crisis, which means separation.
- 14:31So, he says, "If you have unbelief,
- 14:32you're judged already.
- 14:34But you can leave that unbelief and come
- 14:36into belief."
- 14:38He says, "This is the judgment. This is
- 14:40the separation between you and life,
- 14:43between you and Christ. This is the
- 14:45judgment.
- 14:46The separation. That light has come into
- 14:49the world, and men loved darkness rather
- 14:52than light, for their deeds were evil."
- 14:54So, he's saying,
- 14:56"I'm not the one judging you. Your love
- 14:59for darkness is peeling you away from
- 15:01me. Your love for darkness is dragging
- 15:04you away." As James says, "When one is
- 15:07tempted, he is dragged away by his own
- 15:09desires."
- 15:11That's the judgment. That's what's
- 15:12separating you from God. Jesus is trying
- 15:15to tell him, "I'm not the problem here.
- 15:18Your attachment to rebellion is.
- 15:21For everyone who does evil hates the
- 15:24light and does not come to the light for
- 15:26fear that his deeds will be exposed.
- 15:29But he who practices the truth comes to
- 15:32the light so that his deeds may be
- 15:34manifested as having been wrought in
- 15:36God.
- 15:37So Jesus is saying those that are of the
- 15:40truth want to be open. They want to be
- 15:43in the in the light. Now who came to him
- 15:46in the night?
- 15:48Nicodemus.
- 15:50And he said, "You're one of these guys
- 15:52who loves the darkness because your
- 15:55deeds are evil and you're on a path
- 15:57that's going to separate you from me.
- 16:00You're committed to a course that I am
- 16:02not on and a judgment is coming.
- 16:05And I'm not going to bring that judgment
- 16:07to you. Your sin is going to bring that
- 16:09judgment to you.
- 16:10Everyone who does evil hates the light
- 16:14for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
- 16:17But if we'll just love the light, then
- 16:19we can abandon our deeds
- 16:22and escape the judgment of the darkness.
- 16:25He says, "But he who practices truth
- 16:28Truth isn't something that you believe
- 16:29only.
- 16:30It's something you believe and it's
- 16:32something you practice.
- 16:34You do it.
- 16:36Comes to the light so that his deeds may
- 16:38be manifested as having been wrought in
- 16:40God.
- 16:42Somebody ever starts
- 16:44going after someone else, bringing hurt
- 16:46and harm and slander against someone
- 16:49else
- 16:50and they say they can't bring it into
- 16:52the light.
- 16:54Well, they love the darkness because
- 16:56their deeds are evil. Our inability to
- 16:58bring things into the light is evidence
- 17:01enough that our heart is wrong, that our
- 17:03motivation is evil.
- 17:05When we're willing to come into the
- 17:06light what we want to prove is that what
- 17:09we've done has been done through God.
- 17:12After these things, Jesus and his
- 17:14disciples came into the land of Judea
- 17:17and there he was spending time with them
- 17:19and baptizing.
- 17:21John was baptizing in Aenon near Salem
- 17:25because there was much water there.
- 17:28And people were coming and were being
- 17:30baptized for John had not yet been
- 17:34thrown into prison. Why was John
- 17:36baptizing in Aenon?
- 17:39Because there was much water there.
- 17:42If you can baptize with this much water,
- 17:45you don't need much water to baptize.
- 17:48But if baptism is baptizo to utterly
- 17:52submerge
- 17:54and you're taking people down into the
- 17:56water where their whole body is
- 17:59figuratively drowned and raised in
- 18:01resurrection life, symbolic resurrection
- 18:04life, then you need much water. But you
- 18:07don't need much water to sprinkle
- 18:09something on someone. But that's not a
- 18:11baptism.
- 18:13Therefore, there arose a discussion on
- 18:15the part of John's disciples with a Jew
- 18:18about purification.
- 18:20And they came to John and said to him,
- 18:22"Rabbi,
- 18:23he who was with you beyond the Jordan,
- 18:26to whom you have testified, behold he,
- 18:28that is Jesus, is baptizing and all are
- 18:31coming to him."
- 18:33John answered and said,
- 18:35"A man can receive nothing unless it has
- 18:38been given him from heaven."
- 18:41John will not be sucked into the
- 18:43competition, the rivalry between him and
- 18:46Jesus.
- 18:47Every time they try to trigger him, try
- 18:50to excite him into this
- 18:52competition,
- 18:54he doesn't do it.
- 18:55He says, "If Jesus is doing that,
- 18:58he's operating on what God has given him
- 19:00from heaven."
- 19:02And then he goes on, "You yourselves are
- 19:03my witnesses that I said, I am not the
- 19:06Christ.
- 19:08But I have been sent ahead of him.
- 19:12He who has the bride is the bridegroom.
- 19:16But the friend of the bridegroom who
- 19:17stands and hears him
- 19:19rejoices greatly because of the
- 19:21bridegroom's voice.
- 19:24So this joy of mine
- 19:26has been made full.
- 19:28John says, "I'm not the Messiah.
- 19:30Jesus is the bridegroom. Jesus is the
- 19:33one who has the bride, but I am the
- 19:35friend of the bridegroom. I'm a
- 19:37groomsman.
- 19:39>> [snorts]
- 19:39>> And I'm thrilled because I can hear his
- 19:42voice.
- 19:43And I know that he's going to receive
- 19:45what he came for."
- 19:47And then he makes this statement.
- 19:49He must increase,
- 19:52but I must decrease.
- 19:56What a profound statement of humility.
- 19:59Would that we all could have that
- 20:01attitude that Jesus must increase even
- 20:05as we decrease.
- 20:08He who comes from above is above all.
- 20:12He who is of the earth is from the earth
- 20:14and speaks of the earth.
- 20:16He who comes from heaven is above all.
- 20:20What he has sent and heard, of that he
- 20:22testifies, and no one receives his
- 20:25testimony.
- 20:27He who has received his testimony has
- 20:29set his seal to this, that God is true.
- 20:33For whom God has sent speaks the words
- 20:37of God. For he gives the spirit without
- 20:40measure.
- 20:41So he's saying, "God has sent Jesus,
- 20:44and he speaks the words of God because
- 20:46God has given to Jesus the spirit
- 20:49without measure.
- 20:51You and I are promised the spirit in a
- 20:53measure, a tiny little teaspoon.
- 20:56But Jesus has the spirit without
- 20:58measure.
- 21:00The Father loves the Son and has given
- 21:02all things into his hand.
- 21:05He who believes in the Son has eternal
- 21:07life.
- 21:09But he who does not obey the Son will
- 21:11not see life, but the wrath of God
- 21:14abides on him.
- 21:16So,
- 21:18we've just read one of the most
- 21:19important [music] passages in the Bible,
- 21:21and one of the most quoted. We've read
- 21:24God so loved the world that he gave his
- 21:26only begotten Son, [music] that whoever
- 21:27believes in him should not perish, but
- 21:29have everlasting life.
- 21:31But here we we understand something
- 21:33about the way they saw belief.
- 21:35It says, "He who believes in the Son
- 21:39has eternal life,
- 21:41but he who does not obey the Son will
- 21:44not see life." What are they doing?
- 21:47They're making the word believe and the
- 21:49word obey interchangeable, showing that
- 21:52you cannot have a mental [music]
- 21:55or an emotional belief that does not
- 21:59become obedience, that does not become a
- 22:02life conformed to that [music] claim.
- 22:06You cannot say, "I believe there is
- 22:07poison in this cup," and then drink it
- 22:10happily as if there is not.
- 22:12There must be a complete connection
- 22:16between your beliefs and your obedience.
- 22:19And for the Jews, for the Hebrews, even
- 22:21in their Hebrew word, there is no
- 22:23[music] difference. To hear and to obey
- 22:25and to believe, it all becomes one
- 22:27thing.
- 22:29If you
- 22:30acted against your belief, then you
- 22:32never believed at all.
- 22:36He who believes in the Son has eternal
- 22:39life, but he who does not obey the Son
- 22:41will not see life, but the wrath of God
- 22:45abides on him.
- 22:47But what is that wrath? That's the wrath
- 22:49that Jesus spoke [music] of to
- 22:51Nicodemus.
- 22:52That's not the wrath that God is
- 22:54personally bringing out of anger toward
- 22:56us.
- 22:57That's the wrath of separating ourselves
- 23:00from him
- 23:01by sticking with our stubborn way that
- 23:04leads us into darkness.
- 23:07When the way of faith and the way of
- 23:09light and the way of truth is right over
- 23:12here where Jesus is.
- 23:16>> [music]
- 23:27[music]
