- 0:00John chapter 21, [music]
- 0:01the last chapter of the book of John.
- 0:04After these things, [music] Jesus
- 0:06manifested himself again to the
- 0:08disciples at the sea of Tiberias.
- 0:11[music]
- 0:12And he manifested himself in this way.
- 0:16>> [music]
- 0:16>> Simon Peter
- 0:18and Thomas, called Didymus,
- 0:21and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee,
- 0:22[music]
- 0:23and the sons of Zebedee,
- 0:26and two others of his disciples were
- 0:29together.
- 0:30So, we have this phenomenal mixture
- 0:33of these disciples. We have the sons of
- 0:36thunder,
- 0:37James [music] and John, the sons of
- 0:39Zebedee. They're very intense people.
- 0:42We have Nathanael, who is doubtful and
- 0:47has no guile in him and not easily
- 0:49carried away. We have Thomas, who is
- 0:51[music] doubtful.
- 0:52And we have Peter, who is bold. And
- 0:55they're all together, perhaps in a
- 0:57conversation.
- 0:59Simon Peter said to them,
- 1:01"I am going fishing." They said to him,
- 1:05"We will come with you."
- 1:07This is a lively fishing trip, for sure.
- 1:10They went out and got into the boat.
- 1:13And that night, they caught nothing.
- 1:17But when the day was now breaking, Jesus
- 1:20stood on the beach.
- 1:22Yet the disciples did not know that it
- 1:24was Jesus.
- 1:26So, Jesus said to them,
- 1:28"Children,
- 1:30you do not have any fish, do you?"
- 1:34They answered him,
- 1:36"No."
- 1:38And he said to them,
- 1:39"Cast the net on the right-hand side of
- 1:43the boat,
- 1:44and you will find a catch."
- 1:47This is familiar, isn't it?
- 1:49This is how it all started.
- 1:52They've gone back to their fishing nets.
- 1:54They don't know what their purpose is.
- 1:57Jesus is coming and going.
- 1:59He's been crucified, then he's alive,
- 2:02but what's their role?
- 2:04Let's go fishing.
- 2:07It gets me that he calls them children.
- 2:09>> [clears throat]
- 2:10>> That means he's manifesting the Father.
- 2:12>> [music]
- 2:13>> He is their father if they are his
- 2:14children.
- 2:17So, they cast,
- 2:19and then they were not [music] able to
- 2:22haul it in
- 2:24because of the great number of fish.
- 2:28Therefore, that disciple whom Jesus
- 2:30loved,
- 2:32John,
- 2:34said to Peter,
- 2:36"It is the Lord."
- 2:39So, when Simon Peter heard that it was
- 2:42the Lord, he put his outer garment on,
- 2:46for he was stripped for work,
- 2:48and he threw himself into the sea.
- 2:53To put his outer garment on is to say,
- 2:56"I'm not finishing the fishing trip."
- 2:59To put his outer garment on is to say,
- 3:01"I'm walking away from this, and I'm
- 3:03going somewhere else. I'm picking up
- 3:06where I left off."
- 3:09Peter failed,
- 3:10and his failure was a poignant wound
- 3:14that all the gospels talk about. He
- 3:17denied that he knew Jesus.
- 3:20But when he hears the voice of his Lord,
- 3:23and he knows [clears throat] it's God on
- 3:25the shore,
- 3:27he takes everything that he's got in the
- 3:29boat, and he swims to the Lord.
- 3:33He threw himself into the sea.
- 3:38But the other disciples came in the
- 3:40little boat,
- 3:42for they were not far from the land, but
- 3:45about 100 yd away, dragging the net full
- 3:48of fish.
- 3:49There's a little bit of an explanation
- 3:51here.
- 3:52John wants us to know that they had to
- 3:55bring in the fish, and they weren't that
- 3:57far
- 3:58that they didn't have to jump in, only
- 4:01100 yd away. So, they came in the small
- 4:04boat. There apparently was a large boat
- 4:06and a small boat, and they they came in
- 4:08responsibly in the small boat.
- 4:11So, when they got out on the land, they
- 4:13saw a charcoal fire already laid out.
- 4:18So, when they got out on the land, they
- 4:21saw a charcoal fire already laid and
- 4:25fish placed on it,
- 4:27and bread.
- 4:30Jesus said to them,
- 4:32"Bring some of the fish which you have
- 4:33now caught."
- 4:35Simon Peter went up and drew the net to
- 4:38land, full of large fish, 153,
- 4:43and although there were so many,
- 4:45the net was not torn.
- 4:48John remembers exactly how many fish
- 4:50there were.
- 4:51>> [laughter]
- 4:52>> 153.
- 4:56And he mentions that Simon helps them
- 4:59bring it in,
- 5:01because Jesus can use the fish they
- 5:03caught by faith.
- 5:05But now, Jesus prepared breakfast that
- 5:08morning.
- 5:09I bet it was delicious.
- 5:14Jesus said to them, "Come and have
- 5:17breakfast."
- 5:19None of the disciples ventured to
- 5:21question him,
- 5:23"Who are you?" knowing that it was the
- 5:26Lord.
- 5:27Jesus came and took the bread and gave
- 5:29it to them, and the fish likewise.
- 5:33This is now the third time that Jesus
- 5:36was manifested to the disciples after he
- 5:39was raised from the dead.
- 5:42So, when they had finished breakfast,
- 5:44Jesus said to Simon Peter,
- 5:48"Simon,
- 5:49son of John,
- 5:52do you love me
- 5:54more than these?"
- 5:57He said to him,
- 5:59"Yes, Lord.
- 6:01You know that I love you."
- 6:05He said to him,
- 6:07"Tend my lambs."
- 6:11He said to him again a second time,
- 6:13"Simon,
- 6:15son of John,
- 6:17do you love me?"
- 6:20He said to him, "Yes, Lord. You know
- 6:23that I love you."
- 6:25He said to him,
- 6:27"Shepherd my sheep."
- 6:31He said to him a third time,
- 6:33"Simon, son [clears throat] of John,
- 6:37do you love me?"
- 6:39Peter was grieved because he said to him
- 6:41the third time, "Do you love me?"
- 6:45And he said to him, "Lord,
- 6:48you know all things. You know that I
- 6:51love you."
- 6:53Jesus said to him,
- 6:55"Tend my sheep."
- 6:59Now, let's understand what is going on
- 7:01here.
- 7:03Before the crucifixion, Peter had
- 7:06separated himself from all the other
- 7:08disciples.
- 7:10He was better.
- 7:12He had said, "Even if all forsake you, I
- 7:14will not forsake you. I will go with you
- 7:16even to prison and death."
- 7:20And even in his coming to Jesus from the
- 7:23boat, he is again distinguishing himself
- 7:26from the rest.
- 7:28He's trying to say, "I'm different. I'm
- 7:32loyal.
- 7:33I've got something that they don't
- 7:35have."
- 7:36And he stuck with him all the way into
- 7:38Caiaphas's courtyard,
- 7:40but he denied him.
- 7:43He did not have
- 7:45what it took.
- 7:48And so, Jesus is wanting to to see if
- 7:52the change has occurred in Simon. What
- 7:54change?
- 7:56The dismantling of his self-confidence.
- 8:00The shattering of his faith in himself.
- 8:05Because if he's lost his faith in
- 8:07himself,
- 8:08then he's ready to have true faith
- 8:11in Jesus.
- 8:13And so, he's asking him a question,
- 8:16and the Bible translations don't really
- 8:18represent it very well.
- 8:20Because the word love that is being used
- 8:23here
- 8:24is not what it looks like.
- 8:27There are three words in the Greek for
- 8:30love.
- 8:31Eros refers to lust.
- 8:35It's
- 8:37the desire for another to use for
- 8:40oneself. That's lust.
- 8:43The second word is phileo.
- 8:47It's a good word. It means affection and
- 8:51friendship.
- 8:53And the third word is agape,
- 8:57and it means a devotion that would lay
- 9:00down its life for someone else.
- 9:04So, Jesus is testing Peter to see, "Do
- 9:08you still trust yourself? Do you still
- 9:10claim that you have what you don't
- 9:13actually have?
- 9:15Or have you humbled yourself, and are
- 9:18you therefore ready to receive the
- 9:19spirit that will bring that love of God
- 9:22in your heart?" Paul said, "Shed abroad
- 9:24in our hearts by the Holy Spirit."
- 9:27So, let me read this to you,
- 9:30showing the different words that are
- 9:32being used. Okay?
- 9:35Jesus says to him, "Simon, son of John,
- 9:38do you have agape
- 9:41love that lays down its life for me?
- 9:46And do you have it more than these other
- 9:48people have it toward me?"
- 9:51Peter said to him, "Yes, Lord.
- 9:56You know that I
- 9:59have affection for you. Peter doesn't
- 10:01use
- 10:03agape when he answers. He says,
- 10:05"Phileo."
- 10:07Do you have agape? Peter says, "I have
- 10:10phileo."
- 10:12He said to him, "Tend my lambs.
- 10:16Care for the young new believers around
- 10:19you.
- 10:20Don't think you're better than them.
- 10:23Let your brokenness be a empathy and a
- 10:26compassion to help the lambs."
- 10:31So, he says to him a second time,
- 10:32"Simon, son of John, do you agape me?
- 10:37Do you have a love that will die for
- 10:40me?"
- 10:41Peter said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know
- 10:44that I
- 10:45phileo."
- 10:47He's not saying I agape, he's saying,
- 10:50"I'm your friend. You know that I I have
- 10:53affection for you. I'm fond of you."
- 10:56But, he won't say I have agape because
- 10:58he doesn't, and he's proven that in
- 11:01Caiaphas's courtyard.
- 11:04So, Jesus says, "Shepherd my sheep."
- 11:08First time it's tend, care for the the
- 11:11wounds of my brand new baby lambs. Then
- 11:14it's shepherd my sheep, lead them,
- 11:17pastor my sheep.
- 11:21He said to him a third time. So, now the
- 11:24third time Jesus says, "Simon, son of
- 11:26John, do you phileo me?"
- 11:30So, it's as if Jesus is saying, "Let me
- 11:32get this straight.
- 11:34You're admitting that you only have
- 11:36phileo. You only have affection and
- 11:39fondness. You don't have
- 11:42self-sacrificing
- 11:44love and devotion. You don't have
- 11:46agape."
- 11:48Peter was grieved because the third time
- 11:52Jesus uses phileo.
- 11:58And he said to him, here's the big
- 12:00pivot, "Lord,
- 12:02you know
- 12:04all things.
- 12:05You know
- 12:07that I phileo you."
- 12:10So, he's saying, "I can't know myself
- 12:13anymore.
- 12:14This is repentance.
- 12:16This is trusting God to be the knower.
- 12:20You know that I only phileo you. You
- 12:23knew it before I denied you. And you
- 12:25know it now.
- 12:26And I'm not better than these other
- 12:28people.
- 12:30I just I do want to serve. I do want to
- 12:32help."
- 12:34And so, Jesus says,
- 12:36"Tend my sheep.
- 12:38Turn out, and in your brokenness and in
- 12:41your humility, learn to love others
- 12:44so that they can move from phileo to
- 12:47agape when the power of the spirit
- 12:50comes upon them."
- 12:53And then Jesus continues the same
- 12:55message. He says, "Tend my sheep. Truly,
- 12:59truly,
- 13:01I say to you,
- 13:03when you were younger,
- 13:05you used to gird yourself and walk
- 13:08wherever you wished.
- 13:11But, when you grow old,
- 13:13you will stretch out your hands,
- 13:17and someone else will gird you and bring
- 13:20you where you do not wish to go."
- 13:25He's telling him,
- 13:26"Peter,
- 13:27your problem
- 13:29is that you're still your own master.
- 13:32You still live by the dictates of what
- 13:34you want.
- 13:36But, when you mature,
- 13:38God is going to gird you and take you in
- 13:41a path of sacrifice
- 13:44that you're not going to want to go."
- 13:47Now, John says, "Now, Jesus said this
- 13:52signifying by what kind of death
- 13:56he, Peter,
- 13:57would glorify God."
- 14:01And when he had spoken this, he said to
- 14:03him,
- 14:05"Follow me."
- 14:08That's the first thing he ever said to
- 14:09Peter,
- 14:10and it's the last thing he ever said to
- 14:12him.
- 14:13"I'm not asking you to do anything that
- 14:15I haven't done.
- 14:16But, if I've borne my cross, it's been
- 14:19because I have agape for you
- 14:22and for everyone else.
- 14:24And you've got to find that same agape.
- 14:27And when you do, that agape is going to
- 14:30gird you and make you do things that are
- 14:32not in the service of your
- 14:34self-protection,
- 14:36but you're going to be following in my
- 14:37footsteps."
- 14:40Peter, turning around, saw the disciple
- 14:42whom Jesus loved following them. This is
- 14:45John.
- 14:46The one who also had leaned back on
- 14:49[music] his bosom at the supper and
- 14:51said, "Lord, who is it who betrays you?"
- 14:55So, Peter,
- 14:56seeing him, John, [music]
- 14:59said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this
- 15:01man?"
- 15:04This is the same rivalry
- 15:07that Mark and Luke
- 15:09>> [music]
- 15:09>> and Matthew focus on.
- 15:11He doesn't like that Jesus is plotting a
- 15:14course [music] of sacrifice for him.
- 15:17And what about this guy?
- 15:21Jesus said to him,
- 15:23"If I want him to remain until I come,
- 15:27what is that to you?
- 15:29You follow me."
- 15:34Therefore, John says, "Therefore, this
- 15:37saying went out among the brethren that
- 15:39that disciple would not die. Yet, Jesus
- 15:42did not say to him that he would not
- 15:44die, but only if I want him to remain
- 15:47until I come, what is that to you?"
- 15:51This is the disciple
- 15:53who is testifying to these things
- 15:56and wrote these things.
- 15:58And we know that [music] his testimony
- 16:00is true.
- 16:02And there are also many other things
- 16:03which [music] Jesus did, which,
- 16:06if they were written in detail, I
- 16:08suppose that even the world itself would
- 16:11not contain the books that would be
- 16:14written.
- 16:15That's the end of the book of John.
- 16:53>> [music]
- 17:03[music]
