- 0:00John chapter 19 verse 1. Pilate then
- 0:03took Jesus and scourged him.
- 0:07And the soldiers twisted together a
- 0:08crown of thorns
- 0:11and put it on his head
- 0:13and put a purple robe on him.
- 0:15All the Gospels tell us this story.
- 0:18All of them tell us
- 0:20that they put a crown of thorns on his
- 0:23head. But what do thorns represent?
- 0:26Thorns represent the curse.
- 0:30"Cursed be the ground because of you,"
- 0:33the Lord had said in the Garden of Eden.
- 0:35"Now it will bring forth thorns."
- 0:39And so the crown represents that he's a
- 0:42king.
- 0:44And the thorns represent
- 0:46that the curse of sin is what's going to
- 0:49kill him and that he's accepting
- 0:52that
- 0:53that curse
- 0:55of of the sin that we brought on the
- 0:57earth and brought on ourselves.
- 1:02And the robe, the purple robe, nobody
- 1:04was allowed to wear purple unless you
- 1:06were part of the royalty. It was the
- 1:08color itself signified that you were
- 1:11nobility.
- 1:14They put a purple robe on him and they
- 1:15began to come up to him and say, "Hail,
- 1:18King of the Jews."
- 1:21And to give him slaps in his face.
- 1:24Pilate came out again and said to them,
- 1:27"Behold, I am bringing him out to you
- 1:29so that you may know that I find no
- 1:31guilt in him."
- 1:35Jesus then came out wearing the crown of
- 1:38thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said
- 1:41to them,
- 1:42"Behold the man."
- 1:49That gets me.
- 1:54So you have to understand the scene.
- 1:56Pilate has a court.
- 1:59And so he's talking to Jesus
- 2:01inside
- 2:03his court behind closed doors.
- 2:06But the Jews
- 2:07won't enter that court of the Roman
- 2:10Gentile
- 2:11because they don't want to defile
- 2:13themselves before the Sabbath. So
- 2:15they're standing outside.
- 2:18And Pilate will come out to them and ask
- 2:20them questions.
- 2:23And after
- 2:25After he asks Jesus the questions, he
- 2:27decides that what he's going to do is
- 2:30abuse Jesus, rough him up really bad,
- 2:33beat him with a cat-of-nine-tails
- 2:36until the flesh is falling from his back
- 2:39and he's covered in blood,
- 2:41smash a crown of thorns onto his head,
- 2:44punch him in the face,
- 2:46beat him across the head with a reed,
- 2:49mock him,
- 2:50and then bring him out to the Jews so
- 2:52pulverized, so humiliated,
- 2:56that maybe they'll say that's good
- 2:57enough.
- 2:58You've taught him a lesson.
- 3:01Okay.
- 3:02So,
- 3:04Pilate
- 3:05goes in and he's this
- 3:08symbol of human authority.
- 3:11He's the symbol of the state.
- 3:14And that's the authority of the devil
- 3:16that is about to kill Jesus. And the
- 3:19chief priests and the rulers, they're
- 3:21the symbol of rebellious religious
- 3:23authority.
- 3:24And they're also a symbol of the demonic
- 3:27authority that is going to kill Jesus.
- 3:30And these two representations of
- 3:34Satanic authority are about to kill
- 3:36Jesus together.
- 3:38And ironically, the state is more
- 3:41reluctant
- 3:43to commit the murder
- 3:44than the religious are.
- 3:47But the state is being used and
- 3:49manipulated into the conspiracy
- 3:52that is ultimately based on envy and
- 3:55hatred.
- 3:58Competition toward the Lord.
- 4:00Do you understand?
- 4:02So,
- 4:03they bring him out
- 4:05and the whole accusation is that he's a
- 4:07blasphemer.
- 4:09And so, Pilate's statement is
- 4:12"Behold the man."
- 4:14It's like, "Look at the man."
- 4:18And that
- 4:19that captures
- 4:20the whole idea that
- 4:22this
- 4:24is what God's human being is supposed to
- 4:27be. This is what the Son of Man
- 4:30is, and this is what you do. This is
- 4:32what your hatred inflicts
- 4:36on the perfect human being that has ever
- 4:38lived. Oh, he's more than that.
- 4:41He's God in the flesh, but he's also the
- 4:44perfect man. So, he says,
- 4:47"Behold the man."
- 4:52When the chief priests and the officers
- 4:54saw him,
- 4:56did they say, "Okay, that's enough"?
- 4:59When they saw what their violence and
- 5:02hatred and lies and slander had done,
- 5:06did they say, "That's good enough"? No.
- 5:10Pilate brings him out, says, "Behold the
- 5:12man." So, when the chief priests and the
- 5:14officers saw him, they cried out saying,
- 5:18"Crucify! Crucify!"
- 5:22Pilate said to them,
- 5:24"Take him yourself and crucify him.
- 5:27For I find no guilt
- 5:30in him."
- 5:32That's the state confirming
- 5:35that
- 5:36even from a secular standpoint, he's
- 5:39innocent.
- 5:41There was no sin in him, nor was deceit
- 5:44found in his mouth. He was led like a
- 5:46lamb to the slaughter.
- 5:48And as a sheep before his shearers, so
- 5:50he opened not his mouth.
- 5:54The Jews answered him,
- 5:56"We have a law, and by that law, he
- 6:00ought to die because he made himself out
- 6:04to be the son of God."
- 6:08Which is to say, God, the almighty, the
- 6:12eternal
- 6:14God in human flesh.
- 6:17Therefore, when Pilate heard this
- 6:19statement, he was even more afraid.
- 6:24Now, John, with this statement, shows us
- 6:25that Pilate is actually nervous.
- 6:28He has some awareness, some
- 6:31superstition or some premonition that
- 6:34he's doing something he should not be
- 6:36doing.
- 6:37So, when he hears that Jesus is claiming
- 6:40to be the son of God,
- 6:42and that that's why they want to kill
- 6:43him, he's actually nervous.
- 6:46Therefore, when Pilate heard this
- 6:48statement, he was even more afraid.
- 6:50And he entered into the Praetorium again
- 6:53and said to Jesus,
- 6:56"Where are you from?"
- 6:59But Jesus gave him no answer.
- 7:02He's asking a man
- 7:04who has a crown of thorns on his head,
- 7:07who's been beaten to a bloody pulp.
- 7:12Isaiah said that he was beaten beyond
- 7:14recognition as a human being.
- 7:18So, Pilate said to him,
- 7:20"You do not speak to me?
- 7:23Do you not know that I have the
- 7:24authority to release you?
- 7:27And I have the authority to crucify
- 7:29you?"
- 7:31Jesus answered,
- 7:33"You would have no authority over me
- 7:35unless it had been given you from above.
- 7:38For this reason, he who delivered me to
- 7:41you
- 7:42has the greater sin.
- 7:49As a result of this, Pilate made efforts
- 7:52to release him.
- 7:55But the Jews cried out saying,
- 7:58"If you release this man, you are no
- 8:01friend of Caesar.
- 8:03Everyone who makes himself out to be a
- 8:06king opposes Caesar."
- 8:10In this, they're trying to trigger the
- 8:12political rivalry.
- 8:15He's an insurrectionist.
- 8:18He's a threat to the throne of Caesar.
- 8:22If you don't kill him,
- 8:24you're going to be an enemy of the
- 8:26state.
- 8:31Therefore, when Pilate heard these
- 8:33words, he brought Jesus out and sat down
- 8:37on the judgment seat at a place called
- 8:40the pavement,
- 8:41but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
- 8:43In Aramaic Hebrew,
- 8:47that means the platform.
- 8:50Now it was the day of preparation for
- 8:52the Passover.
- 8:55John wants us to know that this is the
- 8:57Passover
- 8:59because the lamb of the Passover is
- 9:02about to be slain.
- 9:03And in the Passover,
- 9:06the blood of this innocent lamb
- 9:08caused the angel and judgment of death
- 9:12to pass over the homes
- 9:15that were marked by this blood.
- 9:17And that's what Jesus is going to be for
- 9:19those who allow their hearts, their
- 9:22lives, their homes to be marked by his
- 9:24blood.
- 9:25He's going to mark them as those who
- 9:27whom the angel of death is going to pass
- 9:29over.
- 9:32Now it was the day of preparation for
- 9:33the Passover. It was about the sixth
- 9:36hour.
- 9:38And he said to the Jews,
- 9:40"Behold your king."
- 9:43So, last he said, "Behold the man."
- 9:46Now he says, "Behold your king."
- 9:50So, they cried out, "Away with him! Away
- 9:54with him! Crucify him!"
- 9:59The hatred, the contempt,
- 10:03the frenzy of hatred.
- 10:06Pilate said to them,
- 10:08"Shall I crucify your king?"
- 10:12The chief priests answered, "We have no
- 10:16king but Caesar."
- 10:22They deny
- 10:24the king that God gave them because his
- 10:26kingdom was not of this world.
- 10:29And they accept the debauched
- 10:31abomination
- 10:33of Caesar as their king because his
- 10:36kingdom is of this world. And they show
- 10:39in this that they are not of God.
- 10:42That their their power is of this world.
- 10:47So, he then handed him, Jesus, over to
- 10:50them to be crucified.
- 10:53They took Jesus, therefore,
- 10:56and he went out
- 10:57bearing his own cross
- 10:59to the place
- 11:01called the place of a skull,
- 11:05which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.
- 11:10There
- 11:11they crucified him, and with him two
- 11:13other men,
- 11:15one on either side,
- 11:17and Jesus in between.
- 11:21Pilate also wrote an inscription
- 11:23and put it on the cross.
- 11:25It was written, "Jesus the Nazarene,
- 11:29the king of the Jews.
- 11:33Pilate wants to demonstrate
- 11:36that they are killing him because of
- 11:40their competition.
- 11:41He wants to demonstrate
- 11:44that they are killing him because he is
- 11:47the king.
- 11:48And they don't want a king.
- 11:51Therefore, many of the Jews read this
- 11:53inscription, for the place where Jesus
- 11:55was crucified was near the city. And it
- 11:58was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in
- 12:01Greek.
- 12:02So, the chief priests of the Jews were
- 12:04saying to Pilate, "Do not write the king
- 12:07of the Jews,
- 12:09but that he said, 'I am the king of the
- 12:11Jews.'"
- 12:13Pilate answered,
- 12:15"What I have written, I have written."
- 12:19Then the soldiers, when they had
- 12:21crucified Jesus,
- 12:23took his outer garments
- 12:25and made four parts,
- 12:27a part to every soldier, and also the
- 12:30tunic. Now, the tunic was seamless,
- 12:33woven in one piece.
- 12:36So, they said to one another, "Let us
- 12:38not tear it,
- 12:39but cast lots for it to decide whose it
- 12:42shall be."
- 12:44This was to fulfill the scripture, "They
- 12:46divided my outer garments among them,
- 12:50and for my clothing, they cast lots."
- 12:53Therefore, the soldiers did these
- 12:55things.
- 12:57A seamless tunic was extremely
- 12:59expensive, a very valuable garment, so
- 13:02they didn't want to tear it.
- 13:04But his outer garment was valuable
- 13:06enough
- 13:07that they did want it, so they tore it
- 13:09into four pieces,
- 13:11so the soldiers could take it and make
- 13:12something out of the valuable cloth.
- 13:17Therefore, the soldiers did these
- 13:18things.
- 13:19But standing by the cross of Jesus were
- 13:22his mother,
- 13:23and his mother's sister, Mary the wife
- 13:26of Clopas,
- 13:28and Mary Magdalene.
- 13:30So, Jesus' mother and Jesus' aunt
- 13:33are at the cross along with Mary
- 13:35Magdalene.
- 13:37When Jesus then saw his mother
- 13:40and the disciple whom he loved, that's
- 13:43John, standing nearby,
- 13:46he said to his mother,
- 13:48"Woman,
- 13:49behold
- 13:51your son."
- 13:53Then he said to the disciple,
- 13:56"Behold your mother."
- 13:59From that hour the disciple took her
- 14:01into his own household.
- 14:04After this, Jesus knowing that all
- 14:07things had already been accomplished to
- 14:09fulfill the scripture said,
- 14:11"I am thirsty."
- 14:14There are many things that Jesus said
- 14:15from the cross and different ones
- 14:17remember different things, and together
- 14:19we get the full picture.
- 14:21He prays for the forgiveness of those
- 14:24who are tormenting him.
- 14:26But in this story,
- 14:28in John's remembrance,
- 14:31Jesus is looking after his own mom.
- 14:35And he's recognizing that he's going to
- 14:37be absent.
- 14:39And his mother is not going to have his
- 14:41presence in her life, and so he
- 14:44says to her,
- 14:46"John, my friend whom I love is going to
- 14:49be your son.
- 14:51And John, you take care of her
- 14:53as your mother."
- 14:54And so, John takes her into his home,
- 14:57into his household, and takes care of
- 14:59her from that time on.
- 15:01It's another example
- 15:03of how intimately he was
- 15:06considering and caring for
- 15:09those in his
- 15:10in his care.
- 15:13He says, "I am thirsty."
- 15:15A jar full of sour wine was standing
- 15:17there, so they put a sponge full of the
- 15:20sour wine upon a branch of hyssop
- 15:23and brought it up to his mouth.
- 15:25Therefore, when Jesus
- 15:26had received
- 15:28the sour wine, he said,
- 15:31"It is finished."
- 15:33And he bowed his head and gave up his
- 15:36spirit.
- 15:38So,
- 15:40he says, "It is finished."
- 15:44His agony, his suffering, his pain
- 15:47is finished.
- 15:49The bearing of this crown of thorns,
- 15:52this judgment of sin that we
- 15:56brought on ourselves, that he then took
- 15:59upon himself.
- 16:01The anguish, the judgment is finished.
- 16:03He's born it all.
- 16:05There's nothing more for us to suffer.
- 16:08He's absorbed it all into himself, and
- 16:11he says, "It is finished." He gave up
- 16:14his spirit. And what was that spirit
- 16:16that he gave up?
- 16:18It was the God who lived inside of him.
- 16:21It was the Father. So, in the other
- 16:23gospels,
- 16:24this moment is described by him saying,
- 16:27"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani."
- 16:29Literally, "My God, my God," or "The God
- 16:32of me, the God of me, why have you left
- 16:35me behind?"
- 16:36And when that divine presence living
- 16:38inside of him departs,
- 16:41he dies. He ceases to live because
- 16:44that's the animation that made the human
- 16:47life the divine life.
- 16:49But in that, he knows the separation
- 16:52between himself and God.
- 16:54In that, he tastes the eternal damnation
- 16:57that we would know when we would be
- 16:59separated from the presence of the Lord
- 17:03in judgment. And he partakes of that on
- 17:05our behalf.
- 17:07And his filling up and drinking of the
- 17:09cup of judgment is complete. It is full.
- 17:13It is finished.
- 17:16Then the Jews, because it was the day of
- 17:18preparation,
- 17:19so that the bodies would not remain on
- 17:21the cross on the Sabbath
- 17:24for that Sabbath was a high day, asked
- 17:27Pilate
- 17:28that their legs might be broken so that
- 17:31they might be taken away. So the
- 17:33soldiers came and broke the legs of the
- 17:36first man and of the other who was
- 17:38crucified with him.
- 17:40But coming to Jesus, when they saw that
- 17:42he was already dead, they did not break
- 17:45his legs. But one of the soldiers
- 17:47pierced his side with a spear and
- 17:49immediately blood and water came out.
- 17:54And he who has seen testified, and his
- 17:57testimony is true, and he knows that he
- 18:00is telling the truth
- 18:02so that you also may believe. John is
- 18:05speaking of himself. He's saying, "I'm
- 18:06telling you exactly what I saw
- 18:09and my testimony is true."
- 18:11For these things came to pass to fulfill
- 18:13the scripture,
- 18:15"Not a bone of him shall be broken."
- 18:18And again another scripture says, "They
- 18:20shall look on him whom they have
- 18:22pierced."
- 18:25After these things, Joseph of Arimathea,
- 18:27being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret
- 18:30one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate
- 18:34that he might take away the body of
- 18:35Jesus, and Pilate granted permission.
- 18:39So he came and took away his body.
- 18:42Nicodemus, who had first come to him by
- 18:45night,
- 18:47also came,
- 18:49bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,
- 18:52about a hundred pounds weight.
- 18:54So they took the body of Jesus and bound
- 18:57it in linen wrapping with the spices, as
- 19:00is the burial custom of the Jews.
- 19:04Now in the place where he was crucified,
- 19:06there was a garden,
- 19:08and in the garden a new tomb
- 19:11in which no one had yet been laid.
- 19:14Therefore, because of the Jewish day of
- 19:16preparation, since the tomb was nearby,
- 19:20they laid Jesus there.
