  1. 0:00So the previous four chapters describe
  2. 0:02Jesus's ministry to the disciples
  3. 0:06from the end of chapter 13 until now the
  4. 0:11beginning of chapter 18. It describes
  5. 0:14what he ministered after Judas left the
  6. 0:16room and before they went to the Mount
  7. 0:18of Olives where he would be arrested.
  8. 0:22John chapter 18 verse1 When Jesus had
  9. 0:26spoken these words he went forth with
  10. 0:29his disciples over the ravine of the
  11. 0:32kiddron where there was a garden in
  12. 0:35which he entered with his disciples.
  13. 0:38Now Judas also who was betraying him
  14. 0:41knew the place for Jesus had often met
  15. 0:45there with his disciples.
  16. 0:47And that's the power of the betrayal
  17. 0:49here is that Judas knew where he was
  18. 0:53going to be meeting and Jesus's enemies
  19. 0:57did not know. And so he betrayed him by
  20. 1:01telling the chief priests where he was
  21. 1:04staying in an hour when they would not
  22. 1:06fear the crowd and therefore could go
  23. 1:08and and capture him.
  24. 1:11Now Judas also who was betraying him
  25. 1:14knew the place for Jesus had often met
  26. 1:17there with his disciples.
  27. 1:19Judas then having received the Roman
  28. 1:21cohort and officers from the chief
  29. 1:23priests and the Pharisees came there
  30. 1:26with lanterns and torches and weapons.
  31. 1:30So Jesus knowing all the things that
  32. 1:33were coming upon him went forth and said
  33. 1:35to them, "Whom do you seek?"
  34. 1:39They answered him, "Jesus the Nazarene."
  35. 1:43He said to them, "I am he."
  36. 1:48And Judas also, who was betraying him,
  37. 1:51was standing with them. So when he said
  38. 1:54to them, "I am," and the the Bible puts
  39. 1:58the word he in there, but it's in
  40. 2:00italics, so it's not actually in the
  41. 2:04Greek. He just comes out and says, "I
  42. 2:07am." declaring that phrase that refers
  43. 2:11to Yahweh. So when he said to them, "I
  44. 2:14am," they drew back and fell to the
  45. 2:18ground.
  46. 2:21When he utters that name of God, that I
  47. 2:26am statement, the instant effect on them
  48. 2:29was that they fell down before him.
  49. 2:33Therefore, he again asked them, "Whom do
  50. 2:36you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the
  51. 2:39Nazarene." Jesus said, "I told you that
  52. 2:41I am he." But again, all he says is, "I
  53. 2:45told you that I am."
  54. 2:48So if you seek me, let these go their
  55. 2:51way
  56. 2:53to fulfill the word which he spoke of
  57. 2:56those whom you have given me. I lost no
  58. 2:59one.
  59. 3:01Simon Peter then having a sword drew it
  60. 3:04and struck the high priest's slave and
  61. 3:07cut off his ear. And the slave's name
  62. 3:09was Malchus.
  63. 3:12So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword
  64. 3:16into the sheath,
  65. 3:18the cup which the father has given me.
  66. 3:21Shall I not drink it?"
  67. 3:25So the Roman cohort and the commander
  68. 3:28and the officers of the Jews arrested
  69. 3:31Jesus and bound him and led him to Annis
  70. 3:35first
  71. 3:37for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas who
  72. 3:40was high priest that year.
  73. 3:44Now, Caiaphas was the one who had
  74. 3:47advised the Jews that it was expedient
  75. 3:50for one man to die on behalf of the
  76. 3:53people.
  77. 3:55Simon Peter was following Jesus and so
  78. 3:58was another disciple.
  79. 4:00Now, that disciple was known to the high
  80. 4:02priests and entered with Jesus into the
  81. 4:06court of the high priests. But Peter was
  82. 4:09standing at the door outside.
  83. 4:12So the other disciple who was known to
  84. 4:14the high priest went out and spoke to
  85. 4:17the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. So
  86. 4:20John is likely speaking of himself here
  87. 4:24because he's got details that nobody
  88. 4:27else would know. And he doesn't refer to
  89. 4:30himself by name, which is typically what
  90. 4:32he does when he is referring to himself.
  91. 4:35It's likely a a gesture of humility.
  92. 4:40Then the slave girl who kept the door
  93. 4:42said to Peter,
  94. 4:44"You are not also one of this man's
  95. 4:46disciples, are you?" He Peter said, "I
  96. 4:50am not." Now the slaves and the officers
  97. 4:54were standing there having made a
  98. 4:56charcoal fire, for it was cold, and they
  99. 4:59were warming themselves.
  100. 5:02And Peter was also with them, standing
  101. 5:04and warming himself. The high priest
  102. 5:07then questioned Jesus about his
  103. 5:10disciples and about his teaching.
  104. 5:13Jesus answered him, "I have spoken
  105. 5:16openly to the world. I always taught in
  106. 5:20synagogues and in the temple where all
  107. 5:23the Jews came together, and I spoke
  108. 5:26nothing in secret." Why do you question
  109. 5:29me? Question those who have heard what I
  110. 5:33spoke to them. They know what I said.
  111. 5:37The setup here is you're staging some
  112. 5:40kind of insurrection. You're starting
  113. 5:42some kind of rebellion. And we know that
  114. 5:44that's the only way we can get the
  115. 5:46Romans to kill you. When the truth is
  116. 5:48the Jews are just envious of him.
  117. 5:51They're envious of the effect that he
  118. 5:53has, of the popularity,
  119. 5:56of the devotion that the people render
  120. 5:58to him when they wave palm branches and
  121. 6:00say, "Blessed is the King of Israel."
  122. 6:03But they're going to pretend that he's
  123. 6:04doing something dangerous, that he is a
  124. 6:07an insurrectionist or that he's starting
  125. 6:09a cult.
  126. 6:12When he had said this, one of the
  127. 6:14officers standing nearby struck Jesus,
  128. 6:16saying, "Is that the way you answer the
  129. 6:19high priest?" Jesus answered him, "If I
  130. 6:22have spoken wrongfully, testify of the
  131. 6:25wrong. But if rightly, why do you strike
  132. 6:28me?" So Ann has sent him bound to
  133. 6:31Caiaphas the high priest.
  134. 6:34Jesus is calling their bluff. He's
  135. 6:36saying, "Don't pretend like you don't
  136. 6:39know what I said to my disciples. You
  137. 6:41heard all my preaching. It was available
  138. 6:44for you to listen to. Don't pretend like
  139. 6:47there's some secret thing going on
  140. 6:49between me and the disciples. All the
  141. 6:51Jews heard it because I preached
  142. 6:52publicly." So he's calling his bluff. He
  143. 6:55doesn't say anything disrespectful, but
  144. 6:58the soldier understands that the lie of
  145. 7:00Annis is being exposed. What do y'all
  146. 7:03really say in secret? What's really
  147. 7:05going on behind closed doors? Jesus's
  148. 7:08answer suggests that Annis is lying. He
  149. 7:12says, "You know full well what I said.
  150. 7:15Ask people who were there because I
  151. 7:16always did it in the public."
  152. 7:19Now, Simon Peter was standing and
  153. 7:21warming himself. So they said to him,
  154. 7:24"You are not also one of his disciples,
  155. 7:26are you?" He denied it and said, "I am
  156. 7:29not."
  157. 7:32One of the slaves of the high priest,
  158. 7:33being a relative of the one whose ear
  159. 7:36Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you
  160. 7:40in the garden with him?" Peter then
  161. 7:43denied it again, and immediately a
  162. 7:47rooster crowed.
  163. 7:49Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into
  164. 7:53the priatorium
  165. 7:55and it was early and they themselves did
  166. 7:58not enter into the priatorium so that
  167. 8:00they would not be defiled but might eat
  168. 8:03the Passover. So the Jews brought him to
  169. 8:06the court of Pilate the pritorium.
  170. 8:09But they don't want to enter themselves
  171. 8:10into the court of the Gentile
  172. 8:13so that they are not defiled.
  173. 8:16Therefore, Pilate went out to them and
  174. 8:18said, "What accusation do you bring
  175. 8:21against this man?" So, he goes outside
  176. 8:23his court and he asks the chief priests,
  177. 8:28"What what exactly are you accusing this
  178. 8:30guy of?" They answered and said to him,
  179. 8:34"If this man were not an evildoer,
  180. 8:37we would not have delivered him to you."
  181. 8:40Notice that he they do not answer his
  182. 8:42question.
  183. 8:44So Pilate said to them, "Take him
  184. 8:46yourselves and judge him according to
  185. 8:48your law." The Jews said to him, "We are
  186. 8:52not permitted to put anyone to death.
  187. 8:57We don't want to judge him. We don't
  188. 8:58want to excommunicate him. We want to
  189. 9:01kill him. And we want to use you to do
  190. 9:05so." Is what they're basically saying.
  191. 9:09to fulfill the word of Jesus which he
  192. 9:11spoke signifying by what kind of death
  193. 9:14he was about to die.
  194. 9:16Therefore Pilate entered again into the
  195. 9:18pritorium and summoned Jesus and said to
  196. 9:21him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
  197. 9:25Jesus answered,
  198. 9:27"Are you saying this on your own
  199. 9:29initiative or did others tell you about
  200. 9:31me?"
  201. 9:33So he's asking Pilate, "Are you a tool?
  202. 9:36Are you being used?"
  203. 9:38He's getting Pilate to own
  204. 9:42the the conspiracy that he's entering
  205. 9:45into.
  206. 9:48Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I?
  207. 9:51Your own nation and the chief priests
  208. 9:53delivered you to me.
  209. 9:56What have you done?"
  210. 9:58Jesus answered.
  211. 10:00He's going to answer what he's done. Why
  212. 10:04they hate him. What have you done? Jesus
  213. 10:07answered, "My kingdom is not of this
  214. 10:10world.
  215. 10:13If my kingdom were of this world, then
  216. 10:15my servants would be fighting so that I
  217. 10:17would not be handed over to the Jews.
  218. 10:20But as it is, my kingdom is not of this
  219. 10:23realm."
  220. 10:25In this statement, Jesus has answered
  221. 10:27what he's done that makes them hate him,
  222. 10:30and he's answered why he's not guilty of
  223. 10:33treason.
  224. 10:35He's shown Pilate that the real reason
  225. 10:37they hate him is because he's not of
  226. 10:40this world. If he spoke as from the
  227. 10:42viewpoint of the world, the Jews were
  228. 10:44willing to support him. They were
  229. 10:47willing to get behind him. So he he is
  230. 10:51hated because he comes in the power of
  231. 10:52the spirit instead of the kingdoms and
  232. 10:55the power of this world. And also he's
  233. 10:59telling Pilate,
  234. 11:01if my kingdom were of this world that my
  235. 11:04servants would be fighting you because I
  236. 11:06am in opposition to you.
  237. 11:09But the fact that they're not fighting
  238. 11:11proves that I'm not an insurrectionist.
  239. 11:14I'm not doing what they're accusing me
  240. 11:16of.
  241. 11:18Therefore, Pilate said to him, "So you
  242. 11:20are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say
  243. 11:24correctly that I am a king.
  244. 11:27For this I have been born and for this I
  245. 11:31have come into the world to testify to
  246. 11:35the truth.
  247. 11:38Everyone who is of the truth hears my
  248. 11:42voice."
  249. 11:44So in this he defines what his kingdom
  250. 11:46is.
  251. 11:48He tells him in the first thing that my
  252. 11:50kingdom is not of this world and that's
  253. 11:51why my servants are not fighting and
  254. 11:54that's why they are hating me. And he
  255. 11:57tells him in the second one that he is a
  256. 11:59king
  257. 12:01but his kingship amounts to a testimony.
  258. 12:07He's here to prove something,
  259. 12:10not to kill someone.
  260. 12:12I'm here to testify to the truth.
  261. 12:16Everyone who is of the truth hears my
  262. 12:20voice. Pilate said to him, "What is
  263. 12:24truth?"
  264. 12:27So he's from a school of thought that
  265. 12:30makes truth relative.
  266. 12:33Truth is what you make it. Might makes
  267. 12:35right. What is truth?
  268. 12:40And when he had said this, he went out
  269. 12:42again to the Jews and said to them, "I
  270. 12:45find no fault in him.
  271. 12:48But you have a custom that I release
  272. 12:51someone for you at the Passover.
  273. 12:54Do you wish that I release for you the
  274. 12:57king of the Jews?"
  275. 12:59So they cried out again, saying, "Not
  276. 13:03this man,
  277. 13:05but Barabbus."
  278. 13:08Now, Barabbus was a robber.
  279. 13:12The other gospels tell us Barabbus was
  280. 13:14not only a robber. He was an
  281. 13:17insurrectionist. He was a murderer.
  282. 13:21The name Barabus means son of the
  283. 13:25father.
  284. 13:27Bar Abba.
  285. 13:29So, he's the counterfeit son of the
  286. 13:31father. They're going to kill the true
  287. 13:34son of the father, the one who speaks
  288. 13:37with the voice of God. And they're going
  289. 13:39to release the murdering son of the
  290. 13:42father, the phony son of the father who
  291. 13:46acts according to the power they know
  292. 13:48and understand. Robbery, death,
  293. 13:53insurrection.
  294. 13:54So there is a very rich irony here that
  295. 13:58Pilate is supposed to kill Jesus and the
  296. 14:02ruse is that he's an insurrectionist.
  297. 14:05He's a troublemaker. That's the whole
  298. 14:08tenor of the inquiry into the Lord here.
  299. 14:12And the irony is they're going to kill
  300. 14:14the son of God who only loved people,
  301. 14:17who only healed people, cleansed the
  302. 14:19lepers, gave sight to the blind, raised
  303. 14:22the dead, forgave the sinners. But the
  304. 14:26one who actually murdered, who was
  305. 14:28actually an insurrectionist, whose name
  306. 14:30is ludicrously called son of the father,
  307. 14:34him they want to release.
