- 0:00John chapter 17 [music] verse 1. This
- 0:03begins the high priestly prayer.
- 0:05And this is the culminating chapter of
- 0:09his ministry [music] before crucifixion.
- 0:12And this intensive volume of ministry
- 0:16that Jesus gave before crucifixion is
- 0:18not represented in the other three
- 0:19Gospels. It's only found here in John.
- 0:22[music]
- 0:22And this is the culmination of what he
- 0:24ministered to them between the departure
- 0:28of Judas to go betray him
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:30>> and his arrest.
- 0:32He's just been telling them
- 0:34that he's going to go away so that they
- 0:35can [music] have a direct relationship
- 0:37with him, with the Father. And they all
- 0:40understand plainly [music] about the
- 0:42Father when they come into a
- 0:44relationship with the Father through the
- 0:46Holy Spirit.
- 0:48And then he's told them that
- 0:50>> [music]
- 0:50>> they're going to be able to ask anything
- 0:52of the Father in his name
- 0:54and the Father will give it to them
- 0:57because the Father loves them.
- 0:59Jesus spoke these things and lifting up
- 1:01his eyes to heaven, he said, "Father,
- 1:04the hour has come. Glorify your son
- 1:08that the son may glorify you.
- 1:12Even as you gave him authority over all
- 1:15flesh
- 1:16that to all whom you have given him, he
- 1:19may give eternal life.
- 1:22So, what is about to happen is a
- 1:24crucible. Jesus is going to pay a price
- 1:27[music] as the high priest.
- 1:30But he's not going to offer a lamb,
- 1:32another animal. He's going to be the
- 1:34lamb.
- 1:35And he's going to be the high priest
- 1:37making the offering.
- 1:39And he's going to be the altar
- 1:40>> [music]
- 1:40>> upon which the offering is made. And
- 1:43he's going to be the temple in which the
- 1:45offering is made. And he's going to be
- 1:47the God to whom the offering is made.
- 1:50Because because he's going to offer
- 1:52himself.
- 1:54And he in this, the Father is going to
- 1:56be glorified. And that he's removing the
- 1:59barrier so that we can have confident
- 2:02access to the Father as he had access to
- 2:06the Father.
- 2:08Do you understand?
- 2:09So, the in this, he is our mediator. He
- 2:12is serving as our mediator. And in this,
- 2:15the Father is going to be glorified. And
- 2:17the son is going to be glorified. The
- 2:19humanity and the divinity are going to
- 2:22reach complete unity.
- 2:25You gave him authority over all flesh
- 2:28that
- 2:29to all whom you have given him, he may
- 2:31give eternal life.
- 2:33This is eternal life.
- 2:36That they may know you, the only true
- 2:38God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
- 2:44This is the most defining statement of
- 2:46salvation that Jesus gives.
- 2:48He doesn't say this is eternal life to
- 2:50know about the only true God but to know
- 2:54the only true God
- 2:56and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. The
- 2:58word and here
- 3:00is confusing.
- 3:02But it can be translated as even.
- 3:05So, it can translate like this. This is
- 3:08eternal life that they may know you, the
- 3:11only true God, even Jesus Christ whom
- 3:13you have sent. So, it doesn't always
- 3:16mean in addition.
- 3:18It means another expression or the same
- 3:21thing.
- 3:22I glorified you on the earth having
- 3:25accomplished the work which you have
- 3:28given me to do.
- 3:30Now, Father, glorify me together with
- 3:32yourself with the glory which I had with
- 3:35you before the world was.
- 3:37You say, "Well, does this mean that
- 3:39Jesus lived in time and place before he
- 3:42was born
- 3:44of a woman, born of Mary?" No.
- 3:47In the mind of God, Jesus was always a
- 3:51reality. But it also says in Revelations
- 3:5313 that Christ was crucified before the
- 3:56foundation of the world.
- 3:58But it also says in Hebrews that he was
- 4:00crucified once for all. So, he was
- 4:03crucified in the mind of God. When God
- 4:06knows that something will be it is. He
- 4:10calls those things that are not as
- 4:12though they were. So, in that sense,
- 4:14Jesus had glory with the Father before
- 4:17the foundation of the world. God was
- 4:19always seeing the journey that he was
- 4:22going to lead his son on. He was always
- 4:25seeing the crowning faithfulness and the
- 4:27crowning glory that the son was going to
- 4:30receive, the second Adam, who was going
- 4:32to be faithful to him from the
- 4:34foundation of the world, from the
- 4:36conversation with Eve in the garden when
- 4:39he said, "You're going to bruise the
- 4:41heel of your son, but that son is going
- 4:44to crush the head of the serpent."
- 4:48Now, Father, glorify me together with
- 4:50yourself with the glory which I had with
- 4:53you before the world was. I have
- 4:56manifested
- 4:58your name to the men whom you gave me
- 5:01out of the world.
- 5:04They were yours and you gave them to me
- 5:07and they have kept your word. Whose name
- 5:10has Jesus manifested
- 5:13to the disciples?
- 5:15He's manifested his own name. But his
- 5:17own name, Yeshua, means Yahweh become
- 5:21salvation. He bears the name of Yahweh.
- 5:26Now, they have come to know that
- 5:30everything you have given me is from
- 5:33you.
- 5:34He's manifested the Father's authority
- 5:37and identity and name.
- 5:40So, that everything that he does, they
- 5:42know is coming from the Father.
- 5:46For the words which you gave me, I have
- 5:48given to them and they received them and
- 5:51truly understood that I came forth from
- 5:54you and they believed that you sent me.
- 5:58This is incarnation language. Jesus
- 6:02speaking in his humanity is saying, "I
- 6:04did not represent myself. I represented
- 6:08the Father." He doesn't ever speak of
- 6:10representing an entity called God the
- 6:13Son because the duality is between the
- 6:16humanity and the divinity of the Father.
- 6:19He is the manifestation of the Father in
- 6:22flesh.
- 6:24I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on
- 6:27behalf of the world
- 6:29but of those whom you have given me.
- 6:32For they are yours and all things that
- 6:35are mine are yours and yours are mine.
- 6:39And I have been glorified in them.
- 6:43I am no longer in the world and yet they
- 6:45themselves are in the world. I come to
- 6:48you, Holy Father.
- 6:50Keep them in your name
- 6:54the name which you have given
- 6:59to me that they may be one as we are
- 7:04one.
- 7:06So, he's saying
- 7:08God the Father gave his name, Yahweh, to
- 7:12Jesus
- 7:14when he named him Yeshua
- 7:17which means Yahweh become salvation.
- 7:21The name which you have given to me,
- 7:24keep them in your name. Keep them by
- 7:29your name, in your name, protected by
- 7:31your name.
- 7:33That they may be one.
- 7:35We don't have any hope of oneness except
- 7:39by understanding
- 7:40the incarnation.
- 7:43That God the Father was united with the
- 7:46flesh. And the whole burden of Jesus in
- 7:49the last chapters of John is for us to
- 7:52see his union with the Father
- 7:56as a hope and a precedent of our own
- 8:00union with the Father.
- 8:02He is the firstborn of many brethren
- 8:05that he might bring many sons to glory.
- 8:09Will we have the Father in us like Jesus
- 8:12had the Father in him? No, because it
- 8:14pleased the Father that all the Father's
- 8:17fullness dwell in Jesus.
- 8:19Where it pleases the Father that only a
- 8:21measure of his fullness dwell in us. We
- 8:25don't have of his fullness we have all
- 8:28received. But Paul says it's according
- 8:30to the measure of Christ's gift. We did
- 8:33not receive his fullness, we receive of
- 8:35it, a piece of it.
- 8:38While I was with them, I was keeping
- 8:40them in your name which you have given
- 8:42me and I guarded them and not one
- 8:44[clears throat] of them perished but the
- 8:45son of perdition so that the scripture
- 8:48would be fulfilled. But now I come to
- 8:51you and these things I speak in the
- 8:53world so that they may have my joy made
- 8:56full in themselves.
- 8:58I have given them your word and the
- 9:01world has hated them because they are
- 9:03not of the world even as I am not of the
- 9:07world. I do not ask you to take them out
- 9:11of the world but to keep them from the
- 9:14evil one. The world is the domain of the
- 9:17evil one. And he wants us to be in this
- 9:20world living in victory over the power
- 9:23of the evil one.
- 9:24It's not escape from the temptations or
- 9:27problems of the world, it's prevailing
- 9:30and proving victorious by the power of
- 9:33the Spirit over the power of the evil
- 9:35one. They are not of the world even as I
- 9:38am not of the world. Sanctify them in
- 9:42the truth. Your word is truth.
- 9:46So, sanctify means separate them
- 9:50in the truth. Not the truth of concepts,
- 9:53not the truth of doctrine.
- 9:56That is part of how they're going to
- 9:57kill Jesus, the Pharisees' doctrine,
- 10:00but your word, your voice, your
- 10:03anointing is truth.
- 10:06Your word is truth.
- 10:08As you sent me into the world, I also
- 10:10have sent them into the world.
- 10:13As Jesus came in a high priestly
- 10:15mediating function,
- 10:17the church is also going to have a
- 10:20mediating function. As ambassadors, we
- 10:24beseech you in Christ's stead, be
- 10:26reconciled to God, Paul would say.
- 10:29For their sakes, I sanctify myself, that
- 10:31they themselves also may be sanctified
- 10:34in truth.
- 10:36I do not ask on behalf of these alone,
- 10:39but for those who believe in me through
- 10:42their word,
- 10:43that they may all be one,
- 10:47even as you, Father, are in me and I in
- 10:52you.
- 10:53So, he's saying, the same unity that I
- 10:56have with you, God the Father, I want
- 10:59them to have.
- 11:00And what is that unity? It's the
- 11:02indwelling divine. It's the indwelling
- 11:05spirit of God in
- 11:08you, in me.
- 11:11So, he wants us to have the Father in us
- 11:14like he has the Father in him. And that
- 11:17is the only hope of unity, the unity of
- 11:21the spirit in the bonds of peace.
- 11:24That they may be one, even as you,
- 11:27Father, are in me and I in you, that
- 11:29they may be one in us,
- 11:32so that the world may believe that you
- 11:34sent me. How is the world going to
- 11:37believe that the Father sent Jesus?
- 11:39Because the Father was living in Jesus.
- 11:42And how are they going to believe that
- 11:44the Father sent Jesus through our
- 11:45example? If they encounter the Father
- 11:48living in us,
- 11:49if they encounter people filled with the
- 11:52spirit of God, who have the Father in us
- 11:55like he had the Father in him,
- 11:58it's only going to be in measure, in
- 12:00teaspoon measures of many
- 12:02many according to the measure of
- 12:03Christ's gift, but together, we have the
- 12:07mind of Christ.
- 12:08The glory which you have given me, I
- 12:12have given to them, that they may be
- 12:14one, just as we are one.
- 12:19What is the glory? The glory is when the
- 12:21spirit of the divine comes into the life
- 12:27of the mortal.
- 12:28That's glory. When there is a union
- 12:31between what is human and what is
- 12:33heavenly and divine, what is God. And
- 12:36so, he's saying, the glory which you
- 12:38have given me,
- 12:39the glory of God the Father living in a
- 12:41man,
- 12:43I have given to them,
- 12:45that they may be one,
- 12:48as we are one.
- 12:50So, that's the indwelling presence glory
- 12:54that he's saying. He's talking about
- 12:56Pentecost. He's talking about the
- 12:58infilling of the Holy Ghost.
- 13:02The glory which you have given to me, I
- 13:04have given to them, that they may be
- 13:05one, just as we are one. Here's how
- 13:08they're one. I in them, you in me, that
- 13:13they may be perfected in unity, so that
- 13:16the world may know that you sent me and
- 13:19loved them, even as you loved me.
- 13:24God so loved the world that he gave his
- 13:25only begotten son.
- 13:27But he's saying, Father, I want you to
- 13:29love them like you've loved me.
- 13:31And the love that the Father had
- 13:33is
- 13:35to put his presence, his spirit, [music]
- 13:37his power, himself in a human being.
- 13:41And he's saying, I want you to love them
- 13:42that way, too.
- 13:44Father, I desire that they also, whom
- 13:47you have given me,
- 13:48be with me where I am.
- 13:52Now, this is the culmination of
- 13:54everything [music] he's been saying, I'm
- 13:55going somewhere and you can't come yet,
- 13:58but you will come.
- 13:59And here's where he is.
- 14:03The space that he's in is the space of
- 14:06living in God and God living in him.
- 14:11Father, I desire that they also, whom
- 14:13you [music] have given me, be with me
- 14:15where I am, so that they may see my
- 14:18glory which you have given me, for you
- 14:21loved me before the foundation of the
- 14:22world. O righteous Father, although the
- 14:25world has not known you, yet I have
- 14:27known you, and these have known that you
- 14:30sent me.
- 14:32And I have made your name known to them,
- 14:36and I will make it known, so that the
- 14:38love
- 14:39with which you loved me
- 14:42may be
- 14:43in them,
- 14:45and I
- 14:47in them.
- 14:49That's [music] where he's going.
- 14:51He's going to complete unity with the
- 14:53Father.
- 14:54He already knows that place. He already
- 14:56[music] lives in that place. He's going
- 14:58to, after the resurrection, put off all
- 15:01kenosis, [music] all emptying of
- 15:03himself, and take the throne. But he's
- 15:05saying, I want them to come where we've
- 15:07been. I want them to have the indwelling
- 15:10[music] presence of God in them. I want
- 15:13there to be a corporate incarnation of
- 15:16God in us, Christ in us, the hope of
- 15:20glory. So, he's saying, Father, give
- 15:22them the same glory. Father, give them
- 15:24the same love.
- 15:25>> [music]
- 15:25>> Father, give them the same spirit,
- 15:28so that they can be
- 15:30where I am. They can know what I've
- 15:32known with you.
- 15:35>> [music]
