- 0:00John chapter 16.
- 0:02In the previous [music] chapter, Jesus
- 0:04was speaking about abiding in the vine
- 0:07and about [music] the disciples relation
- 0:10to the world, how the world is going to
- 0:12hate them because they don't belong to
- 0:14it.
- 0:16But most importantly, we want to
- 0:17remember that all of these chapters are
- 0:20[music] happening
- 0:21between Judas' departure
- 0:25to go betray him at the Last Supper and
- 0:28his arrest.
- 0:29So, this is a a moment full of poignancy
- 0:34and import.
- 0:36Verse 1, "These [music] things I have
- 0:38spoken to you
- 0:39so that you may be kept from stumbling."
- 0:42Now, what are the things that he has
- 0:44just spoken to them?
- 0:45He has told them that the world is
- 0:47[music] going to hate them
- 0:49and that the world is going to hate them
- 0:52because they are not of the world and
- 0:54because they hated Christ.
- 0:56But his answer [music] is that he's
- 0:58going to send the helper
- 1:00who comes in his name
- 1:02and the helper will testify of him.
- 1:06"These things I have spoken to you
- 1:08[music] so that you may be kept from
- 1:09stumbling.
- 1:11They will make you outcasts [music]
- 1:13from the synagogue.
- 1:15But an hour is coming for everyone
- 1:17[music] who kills you to think that he
- 1:19is offering service to God."
- 1:23"These things they will do because they
- 1:26have not known the Father or me.
- 1:29But these things I have spoken to you
- 1:31[music] so that when their hour comes,
- 1:34you may remember that I told [music] you
- 1:36of them.
- 1:37These things I did not say to you at the
- 1:39beginning
- 1:40>> [music]
- 1:41>> because I was with you.
- 1:44But now I am going to him who sent me
- 1:47and none of you asks me, "Where are you
- 1:50going?" [music]
- 1:51But because I have said these things to
- 1:53you, sorrow has filled your heart.
- 1:57But I tell you the truth,
- 1:59>> [music]
- 1:59>> it is to your advantage that I go away.
- 2:02For if I do not go away,
- 2:05the helper, the advocate,
- 2:08will not come to you.
- 2:10But if I go, I will send him to you.
- 2:15And he, when he comes, will convict the
- 2:18world concerning sin
- 2:21and righteousness and judgment.
- 2:24Concerning sin, because they do not
- 2:27believe in me.
- 2:28And concerning righteousness, because I
- 2:31go to the Father
- 2:33and you no longer see me.
- 2:36And concerning judgment, because the
- 2:38ruler of this world has been judged.
- 2:42"I have many more things to say to you,
- 2:44but you cannot bear them now.
- 2:47But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,
- 2:50he will guide you into all the truth.
- 2:54For he will not speak on his own
- 2:55initiative, but whatever he hears, he
- 2:58will speak and he will disclose to you
- 3:01what is to come.
- 3:03He will glorify me, for he will take of
- 3:06mine and will disclose it to you.
- 3:09All things that the Father has are mine.
- 3:13Therefore, I said that he takes of mine
- 3:17and will disclose it to you."
- 3:21So,
- 3:22in this, Jesus is describing the agency
- 3:26of anointing
- 3:29working in the church. The agency of the
- 3:33Spirit working in the church.
- 3:36And he calls this the advocate, the
- 3:38helper, and we remember that the word
- 3:41helper or advocate is parakletos in
- 3:44Greek,
- 3:45which means defense attorney,
- 3:47counselor, or
- 3:50helper, support, someone at your side in
- 3:53a conflict.
- 3:56And he says that he's going to convict
- 3:58the world of sin
- 4:01and of righteousness and of judgment.
- 4:05And he says that the conviction of sin
- 4:08is based on the fact that they do not
- 4:10believe in him.
- 4:12So,
- 4:14sin is what we shouldn't do. The Holy
- 4:16Spirit is going to convict us of what we
- 4:18should not do, all those things that we
- 4:20do that are outside of and contrary to
- 4:24our
- 4:25professed belief
- 4:27in God as our Lord and Savior, in Jesus
- 4:30as our Lord and Savior. And then he says
- 4:32he's going to convict us of
- 4:33righteousness.
- 4:35Sin is what we should not do,
- 4:37righteousness is what we should do
- 4:40because I go to the Father and you no
- 4:42longer see me.
- 4:44He's saying, "Because I'm not here to
- 4:47offer this instruction to you in the
- 4:49flesh, you need some kind of advocate,
- 4:53some kind of influence in your life. And
- 4:56that influence is going to be the
- 4:57prompting of the Holy Spirit
- 5:00once they are born of the Spirit."
- 5:03Judgment is the last thing that the
- 5:05Spirit is going to convict us of.
- 5:08And judgment is the consequence
- 5:11of both sin and righteousness.
- 5:15It's God's decision. It's God's
- 5:18analysis. It's God's conclusion on
- 5:21whether we have sinned or whether we
- 5:22have acted righteously.
- 5:25"Concerning judgment, because the ruler
- 5:27of this world has been judged."
- 5:30He's He's saying that when
- 5:33the rulers of this world kill the Lord
- 5:35of glory,
- 5:36that they will be judged in that act.
- 5:39They will be shown for who they are,
- 5:42their envy. This refers to the religious
- 5:45system. It refers to the Roman system,
- 5:48but it refers to the devil, also. The
- 5:51devil is exposed and made a mockery of
- 5:54at the cross
- 5:55when he tries to extinguish the only
- 5:58righteous life.
- 6:00Amen. And so, he is judged in that
- 6:03sense. He is also judged in the sense
- 6:06that he is
- 6:07putting his hand on someone over whom he
- 6:10has no rightful claim.
- 6:12Jesus never acted in sin, so he never
- 6:15placed himself under the domain of the
- 6:17devil, even though he was a human being.
- 6:21So, when the devil used the powers of of
- 6:24his kingdom, of violence and fear and
- 6:27death, to harm the Son of God, he
- 6:31undermined himself. He disarmed himself.
- 6:35Christ disarmed him.
- 6:37One of the most important things here is
- 6:39that Jesus says, "It is to your
- 6:41advantage that I go away,
- 6:45or else the helper will not come."
- 6:48And this is a profound insight. Jesus
- 6:50feels like
- 6:52the disciples could develop
- 6:55a fleshly dependence on his bodily
- 7:00presence in their life
- 7:02that could actually represent a
- 7:05hindrance
- 7:07to them learning to hear the voice of
- 7:09the Spirit themselves. So, he's saying
- 7:11to them, "If I stay around here and
- 7:13answer all your questions, you're never
- 7:15going to learn how to walk in the
- 7:16Spirit. So, it is you to your advantage
- 7:20that I go away so that you can learn to
- 7:23be dependent on the Holy Spirit."
- 7:27He's already said in this same book two
- 7:29chapters earlier,
- 7:31"He has been with you." Because Jesus is
- 7:35the Holy Spirit in bodily form. He was
- 7:38born and conceived of the Holy Spirit
- 7:40according to Matthew 1:20.
- 7:42He says of the Spirit, "He has been with
- 7:44you," referring to Jesus in the flesh,
- 7:47"but he will be in you," referring to
- 7:50the Holy Spirit, the anointing that is
- 7:52going to be guiding them and convicting
- 7:54them of sin, righteousness, and
- 7:56judgment.
- 7:58"A little while and you will no longer
- 8:00see me, and again a little while and you
- 8:04will see me."
- 8:05Some of his disciples then said to one
- 8:07another, "What is this thing he is
- 8:09telling us, 'A little while and you will
- 8:11not see me and again a little while and
- 8:14you will see me and because I go to the
- 8:17Father'?"
- 8:19So, they were saying, "What is this that
- 8:22he is saying, 'A little while'?
- 8:25We do not know what he is talking
- 8:27about."
- 8:29Jesus knew that they wished to question
- 8:32him
- 8:34and he said to them,
- 8:37"Are you deliberating together about
- 8:39this
- 8:40that I said, 'A little while and you
- 8:42will not see me and again a little while
- 8:45and you will see me'?
- 8:48Truly, truly, I say to you that you will
- 8:51weep and lament, but the world will
- 8:54rejoice.
- 8:57You will grieve, but your grief will be
- 8:59turned into joy.
- 9:02Whenever a woman is in labor, she has
- 9:04pain
- 9:05because her hour has come.
- 9:08>> [clears throat]
- 9:08>> But when she gives birth to the child,
- 9:10she no longer remembers the anguish
- 9:13because of the joy that a child has been
- 9:16born into the world.
- 9:19Therefore, you too grieve now,
- 9:22but I will see you again.
- 9:24And your heart will rejoice
- 9:27and no one will take your joy away from
- 9:30you."
- 9:32You say, "Well, what is he talking
- 9:34about?" He's talking about two things.
- 9:37He's talking about a little while of him
- 9:40being in the grave,
- 9:41a little while
- 9:43between his arrest and his resurrection.
- 9:47And he's saying, "You're going to be
- 9:49brokenhearted,
- 9:50but the world's going to be real
- 9:52gleeful.
- 9:53But then, you're going to have a joy
- 9:56that no one can take away from you.
- 9:58But he's also talking about another
- 9:59dimension.
- 10:01He's talking about when he ascends into
- 10:03heaven.
- 10:05And this relates to what he's been
- 10:06pointing to regarding the comforter.
- 10:08[clears throat]
- 10:09So when he ascends into heaven, they
- 10:11were left staring up into heaven.
- 10:14And that begins a little while
- 10:16where they wait in Jerusalem.
- 10:19But when the day of Pentecost had fully
- 10:21come, their joy was made full and no one
- 10:24could ever take that joy away from them
- 10:26again.
- 10:27This refers to his coming, his return in
- 10:31the mode and form of the Holy Spirit.
- 10:35So he says,
- 10:37"No one will take your joy away from
- 10:38you." Verse 23, "In that day,
- 10:42you will not question me about
- 10:44anything."
- 10:47Well, now they did question him after
- 10:49the resurrection.
- 10:51But he says the spirit of truth is going
- 10:52to come and he will lead you and guide
- 10:55you into all truth. And he will bring to
- 10:58your remembrance. So that this is is him
- 11:00speaking about the outpouring of the
- 11:02spirit.
- 11:03"In that day, you will not question me
- 11:05about anything. Truly, truly I say to
- 11:07you, if you ask the Father for anything
- 11:10in my name, he will give it to you.
- 11:13You're not going to be asking me.
- 11:15You're going to be interacting directly
- 11:18with God.
- 11:19Until now, you have asked for nothing in
- 11:22my name.
- 11:24Ask and you will receive
- 11:26so that your joy may be made full."
- 11:30You remember one of the first things
- 11:32that they would ask in his name
- 11:34was for the healing of the man at the
- 11:36gate beautiful.
- 11:38When they said, "Silver and gold we do
- 11:39not have, but what we do have we give to
- 11:42you in the name of Jesus Christ of
- 11:44Nazareth, rise up and walk." That was an
- 11:47example of them acting
- 11:49by the power of the spirit they had just
- 11:51received in the name of Jesus.
- 11:55The name by which the Holy Spirit was
- 11:57called.
- 11:58"These things I have spoken to you in a
- 12:00figurative language."
- 12:03He's saying, "I'm not talking real
- 12:04clearly. I'm using a figure of speech.
- 12:07So there's room for misunderstanding.
- 12:10Proverbs is what it means.
- 12:12An hour is coming when I will no longer
- 12:15speak to you in figurative language, but
- 12:18will tell you plainly
- 12:20of the Father."
- 12:22So there's an understanding that they're
- 12:24going to get of the incarnation of the
- 12:27oneness of God the Father in Jesus
- 12:29Christ
- 12:30where there he's not going to use
- 12:32figurative speech anymore.
- 12:34He's going to tell them plainly of the
- 12:36Father.
- 12:38"In that day, in the day when he tells
- 12:40them plainly about the Father, you will
- 12:43ask in my name
- 12:45and I do not say to you that I will
- 12:48request of the Father on your behalf,
- 12:51for the Father himself loves you.
- 12:54He's saying there's not going to be a
- 12:55go-between of a fleshly
- 12:58Jesus on Earth
- 13:00and you asking me and me going to the
- 13:02Father. You there's going to be a direct
- 13:04connection. For the Father himself loves
- 13:07you because you have loved me and have
- 13:10believed that I came forth from the
- 13:13Father. So he's saying there's going to
- 13:15come a day when you're going to have a
- 13:16direct relationship with God.
- 13:19I came forth from the Father and have
- 13:21come into the world. I am leaving the
- 13:24world again and going to the Father."
- 13:29The plurality of entities does not refer
- 13:32to two divine persons. It refers to
- 13:35Christ and his humanity versus God the
- 13:38Father. But God the Father is living in
- 13:41him. God the Father is where he comes
- 13:43from. God the Father is the words that
- 13:46he speaks.
- 13:48And he's going to bring us into that
- 13:50complete union and we're going to
- 13:52understand the disciples are going to
- 13:54understand and more plainly about the
- 13:56Father in the future.
- 13:59His disciples said to him, "Lo,
- 14:02now you are speaking plainly and are not
- 14:05using a figure of speech.
- 14:07Now we know that you know all things
- 14:11and have no need for anyone to question
- 14:13you.
- 14:14By this, we believe that you came from
- 14:18God."
- 14:20Jesus answered them,
- 14:22"Do you now believe?
- 14:25Behold, an hour is coming and has
- 14:27already come
- 14:29for you to be scattered, each to his own
- 14:32home,
- 14:34and to leave me alone. And yet
- 14:38I am not alone
- 14:41because the Father is with me.
- 14:44These things I have spoken to you so
- 14:46that in me you may have peace. In the
- 14:50world, you have tribulation,
- 14:53but take courage. I have overcome the
- 14:56world."
- 14:59So in this, he's telling them that at
- 15:01the crucifixion, at his betrayal,
- 15:04they're all going to abandon him. At
- 15:06[clears throat] first, Peter's going to
- 15:07stick around, but then a servant girl
- 15:10and a soldier and a couple people are
- 15:12going to ask him
- 15:13and his fear of death is going to drive
- 15:15him away from the one he loves.
- 15:18But Jesus doesn't have that fear of
- 15:20death.
- 15:21Jesus knows that he can lay his life
- 15:23down and take it up again by the power
- 15:26of the spirit of the Father.
- 15:28And so he says, "The Father is not going
- 15:31to leave me alone. I'm going to be with
- 15:34the Father."
- 15:35Amen. But on the cross,
- 15:38what is his last cry? He's going to say,
- 15:41"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"
- 15:45Literally, "The God of me, the God of
- 15:47me, why have you left me behind or
- 15:50alone?"
- 15:52So in his death, he will know separation
- 15:56because he's bearing on the cross our
- 16:00judgment for sin.
- 16:03And our judgment for sin is separation
- 16:06away from the presence of the Lord.
- 16:09Because your sins [music] have made a
- 16:10separation between you and your God.
- 16:13So at the cross, the union that Jesus
- 16:16knew between his humanity and the
- 16:20indwelling God, the indwelling Father
- 16:23inside of him, he's going to experience
- 16:25[music] separation at the cross.
- 16:28But other than that moment, there will
- 16:30be no [music] separation. And then when
- 16:32he is raised up again, that separation
- 16:35will be permanently resolved.
- 16:38He will not live in heaven as he lived
- 16:40on Earth
- 16:41as the Son [music] of God
- 16:44possessed with the Father, but
- 16:46having emptied himself of [music] some
- 16:48of his divine rights. No, in heaven, he
- 16:51will not empty himself.
- 16:53In heaven,
- 16:54it will please the Father that all his
- 16:57fullness dwell in Jesus.
- 17:00In heaven, he will be the throne
- 17:02>> [music]
- 17:02>> and
- 17:03locus of all the Father's activity.
- 17:06In heaven, he will be the permanent
- 17:08expression of the Father.
- 17:11And that's why they will be able to
- 17:13relate plainly to the Father.
- 17:15Speaking of acting in Jesus' name and
- 17:18acting by and to the Father is one in
- 17:21the same thing.
- 17:25>> [music]
