- 0:00John chapter 11 [music] verse 1.
- 0:03Now a certain man was sick,
- 0:05Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary
- 0:10and her sister Martha.
- 0:12It was the Mary who anointed the Lord
- 0:15with ointment and wiped his feet with
- 0:17her hair, whose brother Lazarus was
- 0:20sick.
- 0:21So the sisters sent word to him saying,
- 0:25"Lord, behold,
- 0:27he whom you love is sick."
- 0:32But [music] when Jesus heard this, he
- 0:34said,
- 0:36"This sickness is not [music] to end in
- 0:38death,
- 0:39but for the glory of God,
- 0:41so that the Son of Man may be glorified
- 0:44by [music] it."
- 0:47Now Jesus loved Martha
- 0:49>> [music]
- 0:49>> and her sister and Lazarus.
- 0:53So when he heard that he was sick,
- 0:56he then stayed 2 days [music] longer in
- 0:59the place where he was.
- 1:02Then, after this, he said to the
- 1:05disciples,
- 1:07"Let us go to Judea again."
- 1:10The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the
- 1:12Jews were just now seeking to stone you,
- 1:17and are you going there again?"
- 1:20Jesus answered,
- 1:22"Are there not 12 hours in the day?
- 1:25If anyone walks in the day, he does not
- 1:27stumble because he sees the light of
- 1:30this world. But if anyone walks in the
- 1:33night, he stumbles because the light is
- 1:36not in him."
- 1:39This he said, and after that, he said to
- 1:42them,
- 1:43"Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.
- 1:47But I go so that I may awaken him out of
- 1:51sleep." [music]
- 1:53The disciples then said to him, "Lord,
- 1:55if he has fallen asleep,
- 1:58he will recover.
- 2:00Now, Jesus had spoken of his death,
- 2:03but they thought that he was speaking of
- 2:06literal sleep.
- 2:07So, Jesus then said to them plainly,
- 2:10"Lazarus is dead.
- 2:13And I am glad for your sakes that I was
- 2:16not there,
- 2:18so that you may believe.
- 2:20But let us go to him."
- 2:22There are several things to to notice
- 2:25here
- 2:26that John wants us to see.
- 2:29One is that
- 2:32this is the Mary
- 2:34who was a notorious sinner,
- 2:36who was a prostitute, who broke
- 2:39the alabaster jar of spikenard perfume
- 2:43on Jesus' feet.
- 2:45And now, she's in another crisis.
- 2:49Her brother is sick to the point of
- 2:51dying.
- 2:54And so, they send a message to Jesus.
- 2:58We don't know if it comes as a letter or
- 3:00a or a verbal message,
- 3:03but they said, "Lord, behold, he whom
- 3:06you love is sick."
- 3:10And they're saying,
- 3:12"Our relationship means something, and
- 3:14we know that we mean something to you.
- 3:16Would you please help us?"
- 3:21But then Jesus heard this, he said,
- 3:23"This sickness is not to end in death."
- 3:27He doesn't say it won't involve death.
- 3:30He says it won't end in death.
- 3:33And then he says,
- 3:35"But the Son of Man is going to be
- 3:36glorified in it."
- 3:39And right there we have this principle
- 3:42that God wants to turn our affliction,
- 3:45our suffering for his glory.
- 3:49Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister
- 3:52and Lazarus, so when he heard that he
- 3:55was sick,
- 3:57he then stayed two days longer
- 3:59in the place where he was.
- 4:02And that seems counterintuitive.
- 4:07But when Jesus loves someone,
- 4:10he wants
- 4:11God to get glory out of their life.
- 4:15That's an expression of his love.
- 4:17Not to meet all of our needs in our
- 4:20timing, at our demand, but to ensure
- 4:24that the maximum glory and meaning and
- 4:27purpose emerges from our lives and even
- 4:30our pain.
- 4:33He then tells them that they're going to
- 4:35Judea and
- 4:37they point out that the Jews are seeking
- 4:39to stone him.
- 4:42And he says, "There are 12 hours in the
- 4:43day.
- 4:45If anyone walks in the day, he does not
- 4:47stumble because he sees the light of
- 4:49this world.
- 4:50But if anyone walks in the night, he
- 4:52stumbles because the light is not in
- 4:55him."
- 4:56And his allusion here seems to be that
- 4:59he's on a limited amount of time.
- 5:01And the same urgency that makes the
- 5:04disciples think he should stay home is
- 5:07the same urgency that makes him think he
- 5:09should get on the road. That he doesn't
- 5:11have a lot of time left and he needs to
- 5:13get done what God wants him to
- 5:15accomplish before his time passes.
- 5:20And then he said, "Our friend Lazarus
- 5:22has fallen asleep."
- 5:25They don't understand. They point out
- 5:27that when someone sleeps, they get
- 5:29better, which is an interesting insight
- 5:31about our health.
- 5:32And then he says,
- 5:34"Lazarus is dead
- 5:36and I am glad for your sakes."
- 5:40And this seems to be in perfect
- 5:41alignment with what he has said about he
- 5:43loved him, so he waited.
- 5:46Jesus is not making a mistake.
- 5:49He wants
- 5:51the bigger picture to emerge here.
- 5:53"I am glad for your sakes that I was not
- 5:56there, so that you may believe, but let
- 5:59us go to him."
- 6:00Therefore, Thomas, who is called
- 6:03Didymus,
- 6:04said to his fellow disciples,
- 6:07"Let us also go, so that we may die with
- 6:09him."
- 6:14You could safely assume that Thomas does
- 6:16not catch the bigger picture quite yet.
- 6:20Therefore, Thomas, who is called
- 6:22Didymus, said to his fellow disciples,
- 6:24"Let us also go, so that we may die with
- 6:26him."
- 6:28So, when Jesus came,
- 6:30he found that he had already been in the
- 6:31tomb four days, Lazarus.
- 6:35Now, Bethany was near Jerusalem,
- 6:38about 2 miles off.
- 6:41And many of the Jews had come to Martha
- 6:43and Mary to console them concerning
- 6:46their brother.
- 6:51The disciples
- 6:52are guided by self-protection.
- 6:55>> [clears throat]
- 6:58>> Thomas is guided by self-protection.
- 7:03The Jews are bringing consolation and
- 7:06mourning,
- 7:07but Jesus is bringing something else.
- 7:11Martha, therefore, when she heard that
- 7:13Jesus was coming,
- 7:15went to meet him,
- 7:17but Mary stayed at the house.
- 7:23It literally means, "But Mary was
- 7:25sitting at the house."
- 7:28So, right there we have a little insight
- 7:31that
- 7:32Mary feels
- 7:34hurt, disappointed.
- 7:37She's staying put in the house of
- 7:39mourning.
- 7:40She's not running to meet the Lord.
- 7:43Martha is going to meet him.
- 7:46Martha then said to Jesus,
- 7:49"Lord,
- 7:50if you had been here, my brother would
- 7:54not have died.
- 7:57Even now,
- 7:58I know that whatever you ask of God, God
- 8:01will give you."
- 8:04Jesus said to her,
- 8:06"Your brother will rise again."
- 8:11Her first statement sounds like a
- 8:13rebuke, and it kind of is.
- 8:16But,
- 8:17it's also a statement of faith. She
- 8:19knows that he would have had the power
- 8:21to heal the sickness.
- 8:25But, even in the impossibility,
- 8:27she says, "Still,
- 8:30I know
- 8:31that whatever you ask of God,
- 8:34he will give you."
- 8:36So, Jesus said to her, "Your brother
- 8:37will rise again." Martha said to him,
- 8:40>> [clears throat]
- 8:40>> "I know that he will rise again in the
- 8:42resurrection on the last day."
- 8:46Jesus said to her,
- 8:49"I am the resurrection and the life.
- 8:53He who believes in me will live even if
- 8:57he dies.
- 8:58And everyone who lives and believes in
- 9:00me will never die.
- 9:03Do you believe this?"
- 9:06This is a stupendous statement.
- 9:10She
- 9:11is picturing her brother coming up out
- 9:13of the grave. And she says, "Well,
- 9:16that's going to happen on the last day
- 9:18when all of us are raised."
- 9:20And Jesus says, "I am the resurrection."
- 9:25It's a astounding grammatical construct
- 9:29to say, "I am the rise up.
- 9:33I am the uplift.
- 9:35I am the life from the dead.
- 9:39He's saying,
- 9:41"I am the source of life. I am God."
- 9:45And what What's going to raise people on
- 9:47the last day? It's here with you now.
- 9:51She said to him, "Yes, Lord.
- 9:54I have believed that you are the Christ,
- 9:57the Son of God,
- 9:59even he who comes into the world."
- 10:03When she said this, she went away and
- 10:05called Mary her sister, saying secretly,
- 10:08"The teacher is here, and he is calling
- 10:11for you."
- 10:13And when she heard it, she got up
- 10:14quickly and was coming to him.
- 10:17Now, Jesus had not yet come into the
- 10:20village, but was still in the place
- 10:23where Martha met him.
- 10:24>> [clears throat]
- 10:25>> He stayed outside the village.
- 10:29Then the Jews who were with her in the
- 10:31house, that is, with Mary, and consoling
- 10:35her,
- 10:35when they saw that Mary got up quickly
- 10:38and went out, they followed her,
- 10:40supposing that she was going to the tomb
- 10:43to weep there.
- 10:45Look how many assumptions mark this
- 10:48whole story.
- 10:49The first assumption is that
- 10:52Jesus has to be there before he dies in
- 10:54order for the miracle to occur.
- 10:56The next assumption is that if the Jews
- 10:59are seeking to kill him, that means he
- 11:01should stay away and not go to
- 11:02Jerusalem.
- 11:04The next assumption is that why would
- 11:06anybody go near Jerusalem or near this
- 11:09dead body, in the words of Thomas,
- 11:12unless we want to die with him?
- 11:15The next assumption is that
- 11:18uh the resurrection will be in the end
- 11:20of days.
- 11:22The next assumption is that
- 11:25Mary is not going because the Lord has
- 11:27called her,
- 11:29but because she's going to go mourn at
- 11:31the tomb.
- 11:36Therefore, when Mary came
- 11:38where Jesus was,
- 11:40she saw him
- 11:42and fell at his feet,
- 11:44saying to him,
- 11:46>> [clears throat]
- 11:46>> "Lord,
- 11:47if you had been here,
- 11:49my brother would not have died."
- 11:54She says exactly the same thing that
- 11:56Martha says.
- 11:58When Jesus therefore saw her weeping
- 12:02and the Jews who came with her also
- 12:04weeping,
- 12:06he was deeply moved in spirit and was
- 12:09troubled.
- 12:10In this, we see Jesus' humanity.
- 12:15That he's not just
- 12:17the son of God in the sense that
- 12:20he's God in the flesh, but
- 12:22he's a human being just like you and me.
- 12:26And he's moved with emotion.
- 12:30And he said, "Where have you laid him?"
- 12:34They said to him, "Lord,
- 12:36come and see."
- 12:39Jesus
- 12:40wept.
- 12:43So, the Jews were saying,
- 12:45"See how he loved him."
- 12:48But some of them said,
- 12:50"Could not this man who opened the eyes
- 12:52of the blind
- 12:53have kept this man also from dying?"
- 12:58They've
- 12:59boxed his miracle-working power into one
- 13:02dimension
- 13:04and God is about to break it open.
- 13:07So, Jesus again being deeply moved
- 13:11within came to the tomb.
- 13:14So, we have this scene of the son of God
- 13:17sobbing
- 13:18as he steps toward
- 13:20the graveyard.
- 13:22Now, it was a cave
- 13:25and a stone was lying against it.
- 13:28Jesus said, "Remove the stone."
- 13:32Martha,
- 13:33the sister of the deceased, said to him,
- 13:37"Lord,
- 13:38by this time
- 13:40there will be a stench,
- 13:42for he has been dead four days."
- 13:48Jesus said to her,
- 13:50"Did I not say to you that if you
- 13:52believe, you will see the glory of God?"
- 13:58So, they removed the stone.
- 14:00Then Jesus raised his eyes and said,
- 14:05"Father,
- 14:06I thank you that you have heard me.
- 14:09I know that you always hear me,
- 14:12but because of the people standing
- 14:14around, I said it
- 14:17so that they may believe that you sent
- 14:19me."
- 14:21When he had said these things, he cried
- 14:24out with a loud voice,
- 14:27"Lazarus,
- 14:29come forth."
- 14:32The man
- 14:34who had died
- 14:35came forth,
- 14:37bound hand and foot with wrappings,
- 14:41and his face was wrapped around with a
- 14:43cloth.
- 14:45Jesus said to them,
- 14:47"Unbind him and let him go."
- 14:51Therefore, many of the Jews who came to
- 14:53Mary and saw what he had done, believed
- 14:57in him.
- 14:58But some of them went to the Pharisees
- 15:02and told them the things which Jesus had
- 15:04done.
- 15:07There's several things to see here.
- 15:10One,
- 15:12this is a type of the resurrection that
- 15:15God wants to give us through the power
- 15:17of the Holy Spirit in this life,
- 15:20but also at the end of the age.
- 15:25And
- 15:26the situation was so bad
- 15:29that the assumption is it's past
- 15:31helping.
- 15:32So, when he says
- 15:34"Remove the stone."
- 15:37Take the lid off so that a miracle can
- 15:39take place.
- 15:41Martha
- 15:42does not understand what's happening.
- 15:45And she says, "There's a stench by now."
- 15:50It's bad.
- 15:51This situation is impossible.
- 15:54And it's better to leave it sealed in
- 15:56its impossibility
- 15:58than to open it up and discover how
- 16:00awful it really is.
- 16:04But he says, "Did I not tell you you
- 16:05would see the glory of God?" Which he
- 16:07told her that she would see the
- 16:09resurrection. So, the resurrection is
- 16:11the glory of God.
- 16:13And then he prays.
- 16:14And his prayer is very interesting. He
- 16:16says, "Father,
- 16:18I thank you that you have heard me."
- 16:21Now, his whole point in the previous
- 16:22chapters is that he's not alone, that
- 16:24the Father is with him.
- 16:26And he says, "I know that you always
- 16:28hear me."
- 16:29There's no need for Jesus to holler out
- 16:33to heaven because the Father is living
- 16:35inside of him.
- 16:36So, he can say
- 16:38"I know you always hear me."
- 16:40But as a sign to the people
- 16:41[clears throat] standing around that
- 16:43they may believe that God sent Jesus, he
- 16:47prays this.
- 16:48As a human being
- 16:51he is the friend of Martha and Mary and
- 16:53Lazarus.
- 16:55As a human being
- 16:57he weeps
- 16:59when he stands outside
- 17:01and sees Mary's emotion.
- 17:04As a human being, he prays
- 17:07and says, "I know you always hear me."
- 17:09But as God
- 17:11he commands, "Lazarus, come forth."
- 17:16And then Lazarus comes out
- 17:19and like many people delivered
- 17:22by the grace of God,
- 17:24he still wears the wrappings of the
- 17:26bondage he was in. And so he tells the
- 17:29people around him to unbind him.
- 17:33And that's like an image of the body of
- 17:35Christ
- 17:37taking off the grave clothes of those
- 17:40who have answered the call to come out.
- 17:44Then it says many believed in him,
- 17:47but some went to the Pharisees and told
- 17:49them the things that Jesus had done.
- 17:53Therefore, the chief priests and the
- 17:56Pharisees convened a council
- 17:59and were saying,
- 18:01"What
- 18:02are we doing?
- 18:04For this man is performing many signs.
- 18:08If we let him go on like this,
- 18:11all men will believe in him,
- 18:14and the Romans will come and take away
- 18:17both our place and our nation."
- 18:23So now we know
- 18:26that the most powerful, detailed miracle
- 18:30of life from the dead
- 18:32did not do a thing
- 18:35to unsettle their pride, their
- 18:37rejection, their certainty.
- 18:40Instead,
- 18:42it's at that very moment
- 18:45of revelation of God's greatest power
- 18:49that they determined to kill him.
- 18:51But why are they going to kill him?
- 18:53Because if they don't stop him,
- 18:55everyone's [clears throat] going to
- 18:56believe in him.
- 18:57And if everyone believes in him, they're
- 18:59going to lose their political nation.
- 19:02>> [clears throat]
- 19:03>> They thought at first that Jesus was
- 19:06their political hero, that he was their
- 19:08political Messiah.
- 19:10But now they realize
- 19:12he's actually going to cause them to
- 19:15lose that. And so they're going to kill
- 19:17him
- 19:18so that they can hold on to their
- 19:19nation, their politics.
- 19:23But one of them, Caiaphas,
- 19:25who was high priest that year, said to
- 19:28them,
- 19:29"You know nothing at all.
- 19:32Nor do you take into account that it is
- 19:35expedient for you that one man die for
- 19:39the people
- 19:41and that the whole nation not perish."
- 19:44Now, he did not say this on his own
- 19:47initiative, but being high priest that
- 19:50year, he prophesied that Jesus was going
- 19:54to die for the nation.
- 19:56So he's an evil man.
- 19:58And yet because of his office as high
- 20:00priest, he speaks something true.
- 20:04He thinks he's saying,
- 20:06"The Romans aren't going to take away
- 20:08our nation. You know nothing at all.
- 20:11Instead,
- 20:12this guy is going to [music] die in
- 20:14place of our nation. We're going to keep
- 20:17our politics and we're going to kill
- 20:20this spiritual Messiah."
- 20:24Now, John explains that Caiaphas
- 20:27was actually speaking the truth. He
- 20:29says, "Now he did not say this on his
- 20:31own initiative, but being high priest
- 20:33that year, he prophesied that Jesus was
- 20:36going to die for the nation."
- 20:40Jesus is dying for the covenant nation
- 20:42of Israel.
- 20:44And not for the nation only,
- 20:46but in order that he might [music] also
- 20:47gather together into one
- 20:50the children of God who are scattered
- 20:53abroad. [music]
- 20:54So when he says it's not for the nation
- 20:56only, he's saying he's got to bring them
- 20:58into [music] one because he's going to
- 20:59die for one entity. And that is his
- 21:02covenant people.
- 21:04So from that day on, they, the rulers,
- 21:07planned together to kill him.
- 21:11Therefore, Jesus no longer continued to
- 21:13walk publicly among the Jews,
- 21:16but went away from there to the country
- 21:18near the wilderness.
- 21:20Into a city called Ephraim,
- 21:24and there [music] he stayed with the
- 21:25disciples.
- 21:27Now, the Passover of the Jews was near,
- 21:30and many went up to Jerusalem [music]
- 21:32out of the country before the Passover
- 21:34to purify themselves.
- 21:37So, they were seeking for Jesus and were
- 21:39saying
- 21:40to one another [music] as they stood in
- 21:42the temple, "What do you think?
- 21:45That he will not come to the feast
- 21:46[music] at all?"
- 21:48Now, the chief priests and the Pharisees
- 21:50had given orders that if anyone knew
- 21:52where he was, he was to report it
- 21:55so that they might seize him.
- 21:58So, he has a warrant out for his arrest.
- 22:01And that is the environment.
- 22:03And that's
- 22:04>> [music]
- 22:04>> how we start moving into the next
- 22:06chapters.
