- 0:00Joe Simpson is an English Mountaineer
- 0:02author and motivational speaker while
- 0:05climbing in Peru in 1985 he suffered
- 0:08severe injuries and was thought lost
- 0:10after falling into a crevasse but he
- 0:12survived and managed to crawl back to
- 0:14his base camp
- 0:15he described the ordeal in his
- 0:17best-selling 1988 book touching the void
- 0:20which was adapted into a 2003
- 0:22documentary film of the same name
- 0:24Simpson was born on 9 August 1960 in
- 0:28kuala lumpur malaysia where his father
- 0:30was stationed with the british army from
- 0:32the age of 8
- 0:33Simpson traveled between schools in
- 0:35Britain and various countries where his
- 0:37father was stationed Simpson began rock
- 0:39climbing after being introduced to the
- 0:41sport by a teacher at Ampleforth college
- 0:43he was 14 when he read the white spider
- 0:46by Heinrich Harrer about the first
- 0:48ascent of the North Face of the Eiger by
- 0:50horror with Anderlecht Mayer Fritz
- 0:52kasparek and Ludwig Borg in 1938 despite
- 0:55the inherent dangers of mountaineering
