  1. 0:03three two one stir it up Nick we're live
  2. 0:09hello everyone hello everyone put the
  3. 0:13ear cups on and cheers sir oh man thank
  4. 0:16you Joe thanks for being here ma'am yeah
  5. 0:17thank you for bringing me out here man I
  6. 0:19know we meant to do this before but I
  7. 0:21hope now with all this good energy
  8. 0:23between us we can do this properly for
  9. 0:25ya
  10. 0:26yeah for sure listen man to say that
  11. 0:29you've had a crazy experience in this
  12. 0:31life is one of the most understated
  13. 0:35things a person could ever say I mean
  14. 0:38where do we begin right let's tell
  15. 0:41everybody your story so you were
  16. 0:43wrongfully committed of murder you spent
  17. 0:4622 years on death row before you were
  18. 0:50exonerated by DNA evidence hello
  19. 0:55everyone my name is Nick Harris and I
  20. 0:58was eggs Joe said convicted and
  21. 1:01sentenced to die for a rape and murder I
  22. 1:04didn't commit at the age of 21 in 1981 a
  23. 1:07woman named mrs. Craig was murdered in
  24. 1:12Delaware I had never met the woman I was
  25. 1:15in prison on unrelated charges
  26. 1:17and I stupidly made up a story to try
  27. 1:19and get out of those charges the police
  28. 1:22soon feel realized that I was a liar and
  29. 1:24they fabricated the charges around me
  30. 1:27then so it's ironic then in a few days
  31. 1:30you're going up or Darby Pennsylvania
  32. 1:31and yeah that's where the murder
  33. 1:34happened really basically and Linda Mae
  34. 1:37Craig was leaving her job at 4:05 p.m.
  35. 1:39on December 15 1981 she's going home she
  36. 1:43gets abducted I don't know any of this
  37. 1:45but I tried in desperation to get out of
  38. 1:47a lie that this officer put on me frog I
  39. 1:49got pulled over in a stolen car the cop
  40. 1:52beats me up he puts charges on me I'm
  41. 1:54facing life imprisonment and I'm a
  42. 1:56junkie because all of my life I was
  43. 1:59destroyed by what happened to me at the
  44. 2:00age of seven I had my head beaten him by
  45. 2:03a man with a rock in his hand after he
  46. 2:06sexually assaulted me and I did all the
  47. 2:09stupid things that people can do in the
  48. 2:11aftermath I kept it a secret
  49. 2:13I let it foster all their anger and me I
  50. 2:15became very aggressive as a child and I
  51. 2:17ended up in trouble all the time and
  52. 2:20when I was in prison on these unrelated
  53. 2:23charges to the murder
  54. 2:24I stupidly fell into that mindset of
  55. 2:27desperation of trying to get out of it
  56. 2:29so the police put a prisoner in the cell
  57. 2:31next to me he said I confessed to him I
  58. 2:34was given a three-day trial I was
  59. 2:37sentenced to death and put on death row
  60. 2:39and then stupidly I escaped from prison
  61. 2:43in 1985 and end up on the FBI's most
  62. 2:45wanted list I have to get out I was
  63. 2:49being transported to court and the
  64. 2:52sheriff's were being cool with me at
  65. 2:53first they were talking about what was
  66. 2:56going on in Philly they were two nice
  67. 2:58guys like 60s 68 67 and we drove five
  68. 3:04hours from one of the hardest prisons in
  69. 3:06America called Huntington and I left
  70. 3:08there after spending two years of my
  71. 3:11first two years in silence so if you
  72. 3:13opened your mouth they would come in and
  73. 3:15beat your head in so I was so glad to
  74. 3:18get in the car cuz my mom was waiting in
  75. 3:19my lawyer's office because they were
  76. 3:21gonna give me a review of my trial
  77. 3:24because they withheld so much evidence
  78. 3:26so I was eager to go to court and it was
  79. 3:28the coldest day of 1985 February 15th we
  80. 3:33stopped at a gas station in in Exton
  81. 3:36Pennsylvania and as I got out of the car
  82. 3:39the officer driving pulled past the
  83. 3:41cubicles now we all got out of the car
  84. 3:44and ran over to the cubicle together and
  85. 3:46I went in and started peeing and
  86. 3:48officers holding the door for me and my
  87. 3:51eyeglasses start fogging up you know
  88. 3:53what I mean because you go from the
  89. 3:55freezing cold to the warm to the cold
  90. 3:57your eyeglasses so all I know is I turn
  91. 3:59around and I come out and he has the
  92. 4:01door like that and I put my head down go
  93. 4:04under his arm and I turned left and go
  94. 4:06back to the car and the dude smoke a
  95. 4:08cigarette doesn't know that his partner
  96. 4:10went a cubicle to piss and as I'm
  97. 4:13running back to the dude he pulls his
  98. 4:15pistol out and point-blank shoots at me
  99. 4:17Joe like oh and as it went past my face
  100. 4:20I was like oh [ __ ] I hit the ground I
  101. 4:23ran
  102. 4:24and he's found me with the gun I could
  103. 4:26feel it like I'm like I was waiting from
  104. 4:28the blast me you know cuz he thought
  105. 4:30that overpowered his partner he doesn't
  106. 4:34know his testimony at trial was I turn
  107. 4:36around Nick's running at me and my
  108. 4:38partner's down are gone I pulled my gun
  109. 4:40and he runs and I I wasn't gonna let a
  110. 4:42death-row prisoner run so I've tried to
  111. 4:44stop on my shot so I run around the
  112. 4:47corner I hit the ground I ripped all the
  113. 4:49skin off my hands I've run around the
  114. 4:51corner and I fly towards this restaurant
  115. 4:54and there's all these people innocently
  116. 4:55eating dinner and I'm running right
  117. 4:58towards the plate-glass window cuz he
  118. 4:59ain't gonna blast me you know and I ran
  119. 5:01like I knew he couldn't shoot and and I
  120. 5:03shot around the corner and I ran down to
  121. 5:05a gas station I tried to steal car that
  122. 5:08didn't work then I ran for like 400
  123. 5:10yards 400 yards 400 yards and I hid
  124. 5:13behind the car I just escaped from and I
  125. 5:16was laying in the weeds behind the gas
  126. 5:17station about 50 yards from him whatever
  127. 5:19screaming who was the bigger idiot for
  128. 5:21letting this happen and I was thinking
  129. 5:23oh my god like what am i doing what do i
  130. 5:25do Joe what like how do I just jump up
  131. 5:27and say wait a minute it was a mistake
  132. 5:29you know they already tried to shoot me
  133. 5:30in the face so I go hide behind the
  134. 5:33police station and next four hours oh my
  135. 5:35god I'm Jane pate chased by a helicopter
  136. 5:38and he chases me and he pins me and he
  137. 5:41chases me and I was so fit that I ran
  138. 5:45for four hours through the woods would I
  139. 5:46care what the branches did to my face or
  140. 5:48nothing man
  141. 5:49I blew out both quads I did my my
  142. 5:52hamstrings I ripped my feet open I ran
  143. 5:55so hard in terror that I didn't care man
  144. 5:57and I got away and III made it all the
  145. 6:00way to Florida and I was going to lead
  146. 6:01the country in all this and I said I got
  147. 6:04to go back how did you get to Florida I
  148. 6:05stole the dude's wallet New York and I
  149. 6:07got on an airplane and I went down to
  150. 6:09Florida and I tried to rob a drug dealer
  151. 6:11and I tried to just go sitting there so
  152. 6:14angry I was gonna kill myself I was on
  153. 6:17I'll never forget this day I didn't want
  154. 6:22my folks to see me in prison handcuffs
  155. 6:23no more you know so I was gonna buy a
  156. 6:26raft and I was gonna go out the ocean
  157. 6:27and I was gonna have one last party but
  158. 6:29all the foods that I loved then I was
  159. 6:31gonna stab the raft wait for the Sharks
  160. 6:34after I cut my wrists you know and then
  161. 6:36I was going to cap myself and go
  162. 6:38then I said no I'm going back so I
  163. 6:40turned myself back in they put me on
  164. 6:42death row in Florida and I went back and
  165. 6:45I faced it you know say beat me for four
  166. 6:48minutes and they broke my face broke my
  167. 6:51back crushed me man tortured me and I
  168. 6:56thought I'm gonna get you back you know
  169. 6:59for all the days you made me go in a
  170. 7:00cage and beat some other prisoner while
  171. 7:03you stood there with a club laughing I'm
  172. 7:05gonna get you back I'm gonna make sure I
  173. 7:07start being a loving person again so I'm
  174. 7:11sitting there in 1985 1986 with a
  175. 7:14hundred and five years plus a death
  176. 7:16penalty and I decided [ __ ] this gonna be
  177. 7:20a nice guy so I started to learn okay
  178. 7:26I suffer from aphasia I had my head
  179. 7:29beaten in with a rock so that what is
  180. 7:30aphasia aphasia can be identified simply
  181. 7:33in people who have stuttering disorder
  182. 7:35their brain and they're for the
  183. 7:38vernacular abilities are distorted by a
  184. 7:41disruption in their brain either their
  185. 7:43brain is functioning too fast or their
  186. 7:45mouth is functioning too fast there's a
  187. 7:47combination of a misfiring and aphasia
  188. 7:51can be through trauma or through
  189. 7:54genetics an aphasia affected my life so
  190. 7:57much as a young person I never had the
  191. 7:58respect to listen to people because I
  192. 8:00couldn't function
  193. 8:01I couldn't articulate I couldn't speak
  194. 8:03when I was at trial people spoke words
  195. 8:05that I didn't understand and it
  196. 8:08frustrated me and when I tried to speak
  197. 8:10and I stutter people would be like dad
  198. 8:12come on [ __ ] what he got to say so
  199. 8:15after that beaten where they beat me for
  200. 8:18four minutes and he broke the face I
  201. 8:21began practicing speaking to myself
  202. 8:25every day I learned new words and I
  203. 8:29taught myself how to correctly
  204. 8:31articulate that word into a sentence
  205. 8:33beautifully for my own self in my cell
  206. 8:37every day and then I became very very
  207. 8:42good at writing I began helping other
  208. 8:46prisoners I became the most dangerous
  209. 8:48prisoner that they held because I
  210. 8:51heard about other men I wrote to their
  211. 8:52mothers I wrote letters to their lawyers
  212. 8:54I gave up opportunities for people to
  213. 8:57write books about me so I could help
  214. 8:58another innocent man I did all those
  215. 9:00things because that's how I got back at
  216. 9:02him for they did to me so in 1988 I'm
  217. 9:07sitting in my cell and I read about DNA
  218. 9:09and I knew right then I could prove my
  219. 9:12innocence so I was the first man in
  220. 9:14America in February of 1988 to ask for
  221. 9:17DNA testing to prove my innocence
  222. 9:19and they threw away all at autopsy
  223. 9:22material and when I discovered new
  224. 9:24evidence they destroyed that and this
  225. 9:26woman who came to meet me and start
  226. 9:28visiting me fell in love with me and she
  227. 9:30believed in me so she stood by me and
  228. 9:32told me that she would be with me either
  229. 9:36to the gallows walk or to the moment I
  230. 9:38proved medicines and for nine years she
  231. 9:41stood by me you know and finally we
  232. 9:45found some evidence that was testable in
  233. 9:471995 what is what was the evidence it
  234. 9:50was sperm from the rape and it was being
  235. 9:53sent out here to California to dr.
  236. 9:55Deborah Blake and it broke open and
  237. 9:58transport and spilled so Jackie left me
  238. 10:03had nothing left and then they put me in
  239. 10:06a special unit and he started torturing
  240. 10:09me I keep this part quiet I never told
  241. 10:12the story it would ruin what happened in
  242. 10:14fear of 13 it's now out on Netflix but
  243. 10:18they finally closed down the old prison
  244. 10:21I was in for 12 years where the average
  245. 10:24rate of survival is only 5 and I was one
  246. 10:27hard as Jews there and I made it they
  247. 10:30closed the prison down and open up Green
  248. 10:32County Supermax and the courts ordered
  249. 10:34that every prisoner in Pennsylvania be
  250. 10:36allowed out of their cell for 8 hours
  251. 10:37the administration looked at each
  252. 10:40other's had [ __ ] that not too crazy
  253. 10:42cannibals and not the serial killers not
  254. 10:44the dudes that have been assault and
  255. 10:46raping each other so they picked 48 F of
  256. 10:49us out and they put us in Pittsburgh and
  257. 10:50a special penitentiary setting in which
  258. 10:53we were in a sealed unit and they put
  259. 10:56all these guards in there they weren't
  260. 10:58allowed to touch other prisoners because
  261. 10:59they were so violent and told him there
  262. 11:01were giving you the craziest of the
  263. 11:02crazy you know buff
  264. 11:05low Bill from Silence of the lamb was a
  265. 11:07real man right his name was Gary Hyde
  266. 11:09Nick he abducted black women in
  267. 11:11Philadelphia and put him in a pit under
  268. 11:12his house and fed one of them to the
  269. 11:14other survivors because he was building
  270. 11:15a master race he was my neighbor man
  271. 11:18like so they started torturing us and
  272. 11:21doing all this psychological crazy
  273. 11:22should do is where they were feeding us
  274. 11:24to each other like wolves so I kept it
  275. 11:27all quiet until this year when once
  276. 11:30again misfortune fell in my life and I
  277. 11:32released monsters am Edmund a new book
  278. 11:34that I was going to give you today and I
  279. 11:36thought you know I gotta tell that story
  280. 11:38you know but it's been so hard to come
  281. 11:41back from these moments Joe it's just
  282. 11:43like I look at what they did to me and
  283. 11:46how I went to that moment where the DNA
  284. 11:48is gone Jackie leaves me and so I find
  285. 11:53out I'm dying from hepatitis C that they
  286. 11:56did when they infected me of it when
  287. 11:59they broke my teeth when they beat me so
  288. 12:03I asked to be executed I said I studied
  289. 12:08all the world's religions I read over
  290. 12:109000 books I did everything in piety my
  291. 12:13mother asked me to do us in prison died
  292. 12:18like Dale Carter did with the cards
  293. 12:22coming to his cell and taunting them you
  294. 12:24know teasing him and listen to a man
  295. 12:27screaming agony cuz the bio and his
  296. 12:29belly's killing him so I wrote to the
  297. 12:32courts and I asked to be executed I say
  298. 12:34[ __ ] it man I want to die as a man I
  299. 12:39love who can respect himself the court
  300. 12:44intervened and ordered the DNA testing
  301. 12:46that was going to be done on evidence is
  302. 12:48spelled in July of 2003 the DNA CH has
  303. 12:54come back and he proved me innocent
  304. 12:55how did so the the the evidence spilled
  305. 12:58and they just captured it once it
  306. 13:00spilled it was in a box with all this
  307. 13:03evidence and dr. Edward Blake who did Oh
  308. 13:06Jay Simpson trial DNA said that there
  309. 13:08would be challenges to it if he did the
  310. 13:10DNA in 1999 1998 in 2003 they had
  311. 13:14advanced mitochondrial DNA separation so
  312. 13:17well that he felt confident
  313. 13:18and his results so the federal court got
  314. 13:21involved and said look I don't want to
  315. 13:23have this man executed I want the DNA
  316. 13:25done so they did that and it was amazing
  317. 13:28that on the day that I called her
  318. 13:31lawyers they revealed a truth to me
  319. 13:33I called his lawyer and I'm like what's
  320. 13:36go he goes Nick we got DNA from three
  321. 13:39separate sources that prove you innocent
  322. 13:41I said that's amazing Mike I I'm really
  323. 13:47grateful because you know we used to
  324. 13:49tell people you're crazy that we never
  325. 13:51believed in you I'm really sorry for
  326. 13:53that man really you want to take my joy
  327. 13:59now man so I was really down cast at the
  328. 14:03day I called my mother my brother Mike
  329. 14:05he was having a seizure at her feet
  330. 14:06because he was an alcoholic at the
  331. 14:08default roof and he died shortly after
  332. 14:10so it just went [ __ ] crazy from there
  333. 14:14they take me off death row
  334. 14:16and they put me in a psychological cell
  335. 14:19and they tell me they can't trust me
  336. 14:22that no human being who has had done to
  337. 14:26them what we've done to you cannot be
  338. 14:28angry if we opened this door up and we
  339. 14:31let you out you're gonna get us so we're
  340. 14:34gonna leave you until the day they let
  341. 14:35you out we're gonna leave you in this
  342. 14:37cell because we don't trust you miss not
  343. 14:39to kill us for what we did to you what
  344. 14:41did they do to you the heesu have a
  345. 14:46thing called gladiator day said the
  346. 14:49lieutenant will be off on a Sunday and
  347. 14:52the guards who started to come from the
  348. 14:56Philadelphia area were black and they
  349. 14:57didn't like the guards up in the
  350. 14:59hillbillies beaten on black prisoners so
  351. 15:01a weird thing happened where this
  352. 15:03lieutenant came up with a idea we'll
  353. 15:05look let's let the prisoners get this
  354. 15:07frustration out of you guys by you pick
  355. 15:09out the biggest guy and you pick out
  356. 15:11this guy so one day I'm sitting there
  357. 15:14minding my own business and they open up
  358. 15:15my cell and there's four of them with
  359. 15:17clubs you're up so I got to go in the
  360. 15:20cage and I got to go and hurt somebody
  361. 15:21why do you stand outside and if you
  362. 15:23don't fight they're gonna come in and
  363. 15:25they're gonna beat you worst and you can
  364. 15:26beat a man or get beaten by one man
  365. 15:31so they did that all this for their
  366. 15:33entertainment were they ever punished
  367. 15:36for this not until after the riot when
  368. 15:40one of them testified against the others
  369. 15:42for the murder and stuff I watched the
  370. 15:4711 people commit suicide I've been
  371. 15:50stabbed strangled beaten senseless the
  372. 15:54cards used to talk because I was a
  373. 15:56accused of a psychological murder of
  374. 15:59going out the stalking this poor woman
  375. 16:01because she looked like my girlfriend
  376. 16:02they said so I was never treated like a
  377. 16:04prisoner I was treated with deference
  378. 16:06the worst word I know in the English
  379. 16:08dictionary the way I was treated was so
  380. 16:11harsh that it was cruel beyond cruel and
  381. 16:14yet all I wanted to do was have enough
  382. 16:19within me to learn that beautifully
  383. 16:21speaks at it on a date it they executed
  384. 16:23me I could tell them how much I cared
  385. 16:26about myself I was more important to me
  386. 16:31than living because somehow when you
  387. 16:35suffer like I have suffered your head
  388. 16:39cracks open and you have a typers
  389. 16:41sensitivity to life so that when you
  390. 16:45touch the human beings you never forget
  391. 16:47the 14 years no one was allowed to touch
  392. 16:50you you know what [ __ ] this I ain't
  393. 16:53crying about it I know what job I
  394. 17:00I do because I feel bad for this [ __ ]
  395. 17:02you shouldn't know because I look in
  396. 17:03your arms and in your eyes and I see the
  397. 17:06hurt that I'm causing you no no no don't
  398. 17:08worry about that man all right was this
  399. 17:10is what I'm doing is trying to imagine
  400. 17:13what your life has been like don't you
  401. 17:15worry about me at all
  402. 17:17I'm harder than life and I'm kinder than
  403. 17:19love secretly I'm a saint
  404. 17:22I never hurt no one I tried my best to
  405. 17:26be played every day and I've had
  406. 17:28misfortune and I returned and I'm very
  407. 17:33sorry that I sit in this chair today
  408. 17:36after it came about you see I believe in
  409. 17:42good I believe good is gonna win
  410. 17:44Joe and uh I believe that I had good
  411. 17:49again almost three years again one few
  412. 17:51years ago when I met my wife current
  413. 17:54wife Laura see I had a woman in my life
  414. 17:58before that who used me and left me here
  415. 18:01in Los Angeles I ended up homeless on
  416. 18:02streets here I was actually living up in
  417. 18:06this area on the streets because my good
  418. 18:08friend Noah lives around here him and
  419. 18:10Jason took good care of me and my bad
  420. 18:12times I call it so I go back to England
  421. 18:16I meet this woman fall in love we have a
  422. 18:19baby and she's born on your birthday and
  423. 18:21I start to believe in hope again I go do
  424. 18:24a podcast in England with my good friend
  425. 18:27Brian from true Geordie and I start to
  426. 18:30spread my message again and I want to
  427. 18:31get all these young kids to believe in
  428. 18:33themselves then one day I put the baby
  429. 18:37down for a nap
  430. 18:38and I get Laura to lay in my arms cuz
  431. 18:41she's sick
  432. 18:41and we get up 20 minutes later and the
  433. 18:44baby's dead and I'm coming down the
  434. 18:45steps with the bed baby and I'm getting
  435. 18:48you know all [ __ ] up again and then
  436. 18:51people are so cruel dat in the village
  437. 18:53they started me you know maybe the baby
  438. 18:56was killed by the guy on death row in
  439. 18:58all this [ __ ] and I have a stalker
  440. 19:00ex-wife Karen who just won't leave me
  441. 19:03alone
  442. 19:03contacts the police and tells him that I
  443. 19:05put out a tweet that night and it only
  444. 19:08happened because my good friend Anthony
  445. 19:10Sam and Don he was in the green room
  446. 19:12told me today before my daughter died
  447. 19:15about a close friend of his they lost a
  448. 19:18baby that day and so when our baby died
  449. 19:21I put out a tweet just saying you know I
  450. 19:24appreciate the people in your life
  451. 19:26because they're so precious and the
  452. 19:28police came to our house and humiliated
  453. 19:30me and wanted to know how I could tweet
  454. 19:32about something because my clock was 9
  455. 19:34hours off because I was living on the
  456. 19:37streets of Los Angeles and my time was
  457. 19:38still on la time because Anthony and I
  458. 19:40are developing a major motion picture
  459. 19:43about my life and I told the police are
  460. 19:47you crazy
  461. 19:47like why would I so I can't even get a
  462. 19:51break on the death of my daughter
  463. 19:53like the that was the moment that the
  464. 19:55director of the film fear of 13 decided
  465. 19:57to rip me off
  466. 19:58my rights to the film he decided to rip
  467. 20:01you off how he owed me 50,000 pounds
  468. 20:04from doing the film fear after he
  469. 20:06decided to rip you off because he
  470. 20:07thought you killed your baby you know he
  471. 20:08decided to rip me off then not pay me my
  472. 20:11money when I asked him I needed money to
  473. 20:12bury my daughter so I end up in a
  474. 20:15shouting match with author demoulas the
  475. 20:17billionaire from Boston I promise to get
  476. 20:20on his plane and come kick his ass over
  477. 20:22the money Roark and over cuz I begged I
  478. 20:25it was crazy I ended up I'm still
  479. 20:28confused
  480. 20:28what so your child dies is it my child
  481. 20:31dies and everything goes badly on
  482. 20:33syndrome yes and everybody that I
  483. 20:37counted on to have my back including
  484. 20:39director David sinked and who promised
  485. 20:42to pay me for my participation in the
  486. 20:44film all then tell me oh no I'm not
  487. 20:46paying you I'm like how can you do this
  488. 20:49when I need this money to bury my baby
  489. 20:51why do you say wasn't paying because he
  490. 20:53said he didn't owe it to me and all this
  491. 20:54I said why are you crazy you you have a
  492. 20:56written contract so it's the same thing
  493. 20:59you know how that entertainment business
  494. 21:01is once they get what they get out of
  495. 21:03you that's it so he just said he wasn't
  496. 21:06gonna pay yes what the contract side
  497. 21:08right so author demoulas invested in the
  498. 21:11film and he owns most of it so I write
  499. 21:13to author I call my said Arthur David's
  500. 21:16not paying me my money can you help me
  501. 21:18because he owned most of the film by
  502. 21:20that point so author gets all annoyed at
  503. 21:23me I said look man my daughter just died
  504. 21:25I blew up at him I told him send me your
  505. 21:28private jet I'll come to Boston we can
  506. 21:29have a fist fight you love the fight you
  507. 21:31know all that [ __ ] I lose control and
  508. 21:33then author out of his gray sends me
  509. 21:36some money so we could bury the baby but
  510. 21:39it went through all this terrible [ __ ]
  511. 21:40so I started I said now I'm going back
  512. 21:42to America
  513. 21:43so I leave England I come over here I
  514. 21:47got two daughters with Laura we're over
  515. 21:49here now and the Oregon and Anthony my
  516. 21:53god I meet this amazing man only because
  517. 21:56of Muhammad Ali dying and now he's going
  518. 21:58to help me make a major motion picture
  519. 22:00about my life so I get away from all
  520. 22:02that drama of losing the baby and being
  521. 22:04humiliated by people thinking I would do
  522. 22:06some [ __ ] to a little girl and I go back
  523. 22:08and I rebuild everything and then I try
  524. 22:11to go to can
  525. 22:12and he won't let me in that's crazy so I
  526. 22:15can't go do my job there I lose all
  527. 22:17don't let you in because you were on
  528. 22:18death row for 22 years yeah I know
  529. 22:20you're innocent not only that I just
  530. 22:22came from speaking before the United
  531. 22:24Nations sitting next to the president
  532. 22:25and current former presidents of
  533. 22:28Switzerland and I have a security
  534. 22:30clearance from that I worked in a
  535. 22:31high-profile job in England going around
  536. 22:34speaking all over to governments but
  537. 22:36Canada holds it against me because I
  538. 22:38escaped from death row so I can't enter
  539. 22:41the campus the country of Canada Robin
  540. 22:44Sharma tried to have me come up there
  541. 22:46and speak for him with his conference
  542. 22:48and I had to humiliatingly do it from my
  543. 22:50home via Skype it's like I'll never stop
  544. 22:53being punished for what happened do you
  545. 22:55know what I mean but I don't care about
  546. 22:57that what really bothered me it was that
  547. 22:59all those things started to fall me and
  548. 23:01I started losing hope again so I go and
  549. 23:05I even tried recently just to have a
  550. 23:07normal job and give up everything I'm a
  551. 23:09beautiful speaker in schools and I go
  552. 23:11around and try and help people with the
  553. 23:13education right so I was trying to do
  554. 23:16that the last year with a friend of mine
  555. 23:19named Wayne Sharpe from New Zealand he
  556. 23:20has a company called my verse and he
  557. 23:22wants to help children find the correct
  558. 23:24path education so important we can't get
  559. 23:28that going I can't I decide I'm gonna
  560. 23:30give up everything and just go get a
  561. 23:32normal job but that doesn't work so I'm
  562. 23:35sitting there and it's Jamie's birthday
  563. 23:37I'm angry like what the [ __ ] how could I
  564. 23:42fall apart again so didn't you contact
  565. 23:45me after I tweeted and it all starts
  566. 23:48again and I'm back to believe in debt it
  567. 23:52doesn't matter how I got in his chair or
  568. 23:54it doesn't matter that the man preceding
  569. 23:56me has everything and I had nothing I
  570. 23:59still believe in good it's called yudice
  571. 24:02time and I told you that mess I sent you
  572. 24:05yes it [ __ ] l.joe you're gonna change
  573. 24:07my life doing this man you didn't have
  574. 24:09to do this you're gonna have to be nice
  575. 24:11to me you are and for that man I'm
  576. 24:16willing to keep going
  577. 24:20I can't I mean I don't think anybody can
  578. 24:24imagine what it's like to spend 22 years
  579. 24:28on death row for something you didn't do
  580. 24:30I want you to go back to the night that
  581. 24:34you got arrested and tell us cuz youyou
  582. 24:36kind of there's some tissue right beside
  583. 24:39you if you wanted yeah I'm good I'm
  584. 24:40daughter crying go ahead brother it's
  585. 24:45just the the night you were how old are
  586. 24:48you were 20 21 21 21 21 before he
  587. 24:53sentenced me to death I'm 20 years old
  588. 24:56I'm a Philly kid and I'm high on meth
  589. 24:59and the music's blast and driving
  590. 25:02through Chester Pennsylvania in a stolen
  591. 25:04car yeah everything in my life is just
  592. 25:08chaos I'm fighting with my two brothers
  593. 25:12all the time and no one has respect for
  594. 25:15me I was ugly and it's 2 o'clock in the
  595. 25:19morning I just came from a bar I go
  596. 25:23through a stop sign and the next thing I
  597. 25:25know I saw the lights I pull over and
  598. 25:27the beating of my head's out of control
  599. 25:29and I'm sitting there gripped with fear
  600. 25:33I took a beat in Philly and December 4th
  601. 25:37of that same year in which they ripped
  602. 25:39all my teeth up with a blackjack so I
  603. 25:43was really scared you know as I don't
  604. 25:45move don't run don't do nothing stupid
  605. 25:48you took a beating from cops earlier
  606. 25:50yeah you know Philly cops put me in my
  607. 25:52place because I ran my mouth so there I
  608. 25:57am sitting there and the next thing I
  609. 25:59know BAM on the window baman he rips
  610. 26:02open the door and a track from Bad
  611. 26:05Company was playing really loud and like
  612. 26:09I can't hear and or make focus of what
  613. 26:11he's saying you know and then next thing
  614. 26:13I know boom right up out of the car and
  615. 26:16he's got me on the Carn and his name's
  616. 26:18Benny right and he's six foot four and
  617. 26:20he's got me pressed against the top of
  618. 26:22the car and he's holding me down and I
  619. 26:24can't breathe so I start resisting I
  620. 26:26popped his arm off and the adrenaline
  621. 26:28goes boom here comes the beast out of me
  622. 26:30because it's six two and that age I was
  623. 26:33crazy tough man
  624. 26:34I was like off-the-charts and so I
  625. 26:36pushed him back I remember that and he
  626. 26:38couldn't believe it he pulled out his
  627. 26:39stick and raised it up and I just
  628. 26:41snatched it out of his hand and chucked
  629. 26:43it away I was looking I'm like I was
  630. 26:45like that zombie guy and he went furious
  631. 26:48man he pulled out the pistol and I seen
  632. 26:49it coming I grabbed his hand and I
  633. 26:51pushed down and I had my arms
  634. 26:53outstretched in the Gunma boom down into
  635. 26:56the ground like that I looked at him and
  636. 26:58he put the gun up there and he said ma
  637. 27:00[ __ ] you must ain't puts me in the car
  638. 27:02I'm sitting in the backseat I'm freaking
  639. 27:05out you know he gets in the car and he's
  640. 27:07like jumping back and forth from the
  641. 27:09front seat then he waits and he looks at
  642. 27:11me in the mirror and he grabs the mic
  643. 27:13and he's going like shots fired officer
  644. 27:15says shots fired he looks at me one last
  645. 27:17time he goes help help help
  646. 27:19like it's still going on and like I'm
  647. 27:22I'm like what what what's going on dude
  648. 27:26tells him when they get there the backup
  649. 27:28officers get there he's like he tried to
  650. 27:30kill me he's got my gun and I got it
  651. 27:32back from him I'm like no this is going
  652. 27:36south they jacked me up take me out of
  653. 27:38the car beat me down take me to jail now
  654. 27:41I'm charged with attempted murder and
  655. 27:42kidnapping of a police officer I'm 20
  656. 27:45years old and I meet skip DiMaggio the
  657. 27:47public defender who didn't tells me I'm
  658. 27:50facing life imprisonment and that's it
  659. 27:52and they're gonna put me in the security
  660. 27:54wing because my bail is gonna be so high
  661. 27:55I looked at him I said what do you mean
  662. 27:58man I was just driving home I'm in a
  663. 28:00stolen car like he said no man you ain't
  664. 28:02never going home so I broke down and I
  665. 28:07went through detox with no no help you
  666. 28:09know so three days I'm in a cell with
  667. 28:12nothing but this news paper and it's the
  668. 28:15headline on the newspaper mrs. Craig's
  669. 28:17murder and it starts taunting me men
  670. 28:19taunting me it's hot
  671. 28:22somehow in my head I came up with this
  672. 28:25crazy mantra if I knew something about
  673. 28:27something that big update let me go
  674. 28:30about this lie I didn't try to kill
  675. 28:32nobody
  676. 28:33I was sitting on my bed and the guard
  677. 28:38was walking by and he goes what's wrong
  678. 28:40with you and I started telling him what
  679. 28:44was going through my head the whole
  680. 28:46story
  681. 28:47and that was hecho oh my god he ran down
  682. 28:50the block he went to the sergeant's
  683. 28:52office they got me to the warden
  684. 28:54the wardens now been told you say you're
  685. 28:56telling them what's going on your head
  686. 28:57so hey you had you had a plan to tell
  687. 29:01him a story to tell him a lie and when
  688. 29:04that officer responded because he heard
  689. 29:06the story I didn't have any idea with
  690. 29:08the impact that my words were oh so
  691. 29:10stupid well you're also going through
  692. 29:15detox yeah and so they take me to the
  693. 29:17warden's office and he starts praising
  694. 29:19me they take me out of solitary to
  695. 29:21freezing you how tell me I'm doing a
  696. 29:23great job what did you tell him I told
  697. 29:25him that a man that I knew in the area
  698. 29:29had told me he had done the crime and
  699. 29:31that if they let me out I would tell
  700. 29:33them all about it and he told me I was
  701. 29:35helping the community they were taking
  702. 29:37me out of solitary confinement all that
  703. 29:39they've told me that they spoke to
  704. 29:42officer right and he was going to
  705. 29:44retract his charges and only charged me
  706. 29:46resisting arrest and they were going to
  707. 29:48drop the rest of the charges and
  708. 29:49everything was going to be good and then
  709. 29:52three days later they came back and said
  710. 29:54dude you lied and the only reason you
  711. 29:57lied is because you want to tell us that
  712. 29:58you did this they put me in a room and
  713. 30:01start doing all this how'd they find out
  714. 30:03that you lied to dude that I made the
  715. 30:04story up was no longer a drug addict and
  716. 30:07he had an alibi so you just tried to pin
  717. 30:11the story on some other drug addict they
  718. 30:14do derive me a rolled me up in a rug and
  719. 30:16tried to kill me with a 357 Magnum so I
  720. 30:19figured I heard the story that he was
  721. 30:21dead and figure they won't even find him
  722. 30:24anyway you know but a 20 year old
  723. 30:26doesn't have any concept of you know
  724. 30:28complex stuff like this especially in
  725. 30:30the eighties right dude they came right
  726. 30:32back to me and they had me in a delaware
  727. 30:34county district attorney's office and
  728. 30:36this detective Martin told me no certain
  729. 30:39terms I was gonna tell him why I killed
  730. 30:41that woman I wasn't leaving that room so
  731. 30:45for 13 hours they tortured me Matt
  732. 30:47started bringing up my childhood and all
  733. 30:49that [ __ ] I told him man I just wanted
  734. 30:53to blow up my whole world like an ASA oh
  735. 30:55that's good so this is my confession
  736. 30:58consists of
  737. 30:59I not kill anyone I never meant to kill
  738. 31:02anyone that's good that's good you never
  739. 31:05meant to kill her what are you talking
  740. 31:07about so I went to trial and I was given
  741. 31:12a three-day trial for the murder of mrs.
  742. 31:15Craig after the jury found me not guilty
  743. 31:18of all my original charges so I was
  744. 31:20really frustrated that a jury heard the
  745. 31:22testimony of officer Wright he would
  746. 31:25later be fired from the force being
  747. 31:28caught up in a drug gang in Chester he
  748. 31:30was dirty but they didn't know it at the
  749. 31:33time but a jury found me not guilty that
  750. 31:35prosecutor went mental when that
  751. 31:38happened and he decided to seek the
  752. 31:40death penalty
  753. 31:40so a month after I was found guilty not
  754. 31:43guilty of all my original charges that I
  755. 31:45made the stupid story up I they gave me
  756. 31:48a three-day murder trial that in essence
  757. 31:51was a joke and what they did was they
  758. 31:54preyed upon the poor jury and showed
  759. 31:56them pictures of the victim and stuff
  760. 31:58like that man and he had an inmate who
  761. 32:01burglarized the prosecutors home and was
  762. 32:04facing 20 years come into court and say
  763. 32:05I confessed them that was it
  764. 32:07so the inmate said that you confessed to
  765. 32:10him Charles II had Alena they got a got
  766. 32:12to do that you know so I'm sitting there
  767. 32:16and they dropped the bomb on me I know
  768. 32:19it's coming
  769. 32:19the jury was so crass that they went out
  770. 32:22to the wagon wheel restaurant and put
  771. 32:24their dessert order on hold while they
  772. 32:26found me guilty and then doing the
  773. 32:29sentencing phase they had their dessert
  774. 32:31I was 20 years old man I'm like this
  775. 32:36isn't real man like I never killed a
  776. 32:39rape this woman how can this happen you
  777. 32:40know and then the only mistake I truly
  778. 32:44think I made was that I told the judges
  779. 32:46go to hell when he sentence me to death
  780. 32:47because he couldn't look me in the face
  781. 32:49why do you think that's a mistake
  782. 32:51because he decided to send me to
  783. 32:53Huntington prison the hardest prison in
  784. 32:55America what was he gonna do before that
  785. 32:57I don't know but he made sure I went to
  786. 33:00the place that they broke you see
  787. 33:02Huntington was designed as the prison if
  788. 33:03he raped another inmate they sent you
  789. 33:05there it was the first shoe program in
  790. 33:07America it was the first really what a
  791. 33:09shoe program a special housing unit or
  792. 33:12security housing unit word level five
  793. 33:15Supermax you know like Pelican Bay and
  794. 33:17uh your punishment was that you weren't
  795. 33:21allowed to speak in yourself and if you
  796. 33:23got caught speaking in yourself they
  797. 33:25came in with a nurse and they after they
  798. 33:28beat you down she jabbed you asked with
  799. 33:30Thorazine and they knocked you out for a
  800. 33:32week and you lost your mind
  801. 33:33so it was horrible like I told you the
  802. 33:36first two years of my sentence every day
  803. 33:39I kept my mouth shut I didn't care what
  804. 33:41was done around me you know you weren't
  805. 33:43allowed to say a goddamn word and a
  806. 33:47meant it and you know allowed to talk to
  807. 33:49other inmates nothing I dare you to sing
  808. 33:51happy birthday to yourself like I did I
  809. 33:54paid for that one they [ __ ] me up Joe
  810. 34:01but I don't care about that look I
  811. 34:05realized I was in a race I had to kill
  812. 34:11off the person that I was the person
  813. 34:14that I initially was upon entering
  814. 34:17prison was a deceitful lying coward
  815. 34:20but no fortitude because no self-respect
  816. 34:23resided within me and in utter
  817. 34:26humbleness I took everything that they
  818. 34:28did to me and I paid for every window I
  819. 34:31broke everything I stole reliable and
  820. 34:34then I started to love myself I figured
  821. 34:38ain't get nothing out of this but misery
  822. 34:40so I'm going out like the dude I must
  823. 34:44stand up and I must speak beautifully on
  824. 34:47the day they execute me i'ma walk to
  825. 34:50that walk man i'ma do dis I didn't kill
  826. 34:53that woman but I damn sure ain't no
  827. 34:55coward I'm gonna find out everything I
  828. 34:59can about life and then I'm gonna face
  829. 35:02my death i'ma do it was shot a V man
  830. 35:06like I had this beautiful beautiful
  831. 35:09speech ready for him to I was gonna lay
  832. 35:12it out and just be at peace because I
  833. 35:14realized there was nothing else to do I
  834. 35:17couldn't fight I couldn't argue it
  835. 35:20didn't matter because gods in control my
  836. 35:22life and I really believed that I had
  837. 35:24choice either be a bitter pill and gets
  838. 35:27sucked dry by all the misery around me
  839. 35:30or get my [ __ ] right and start loving
  840. 35:32myself so I taught myself how to speak
  841. 35:36and overcome this aphasia that affected
  842. 35:40me my whole life and I found out that I
  843. 35:44was giving myself neuroplasticity
  844. 35:45healing and I became very graceful and
  845. 35:48calm in prison I was so serene and so
  846. 35:52powerful how'd you find out you were
  847. 35:54giving yourself neuroplasticity healing
  848. 35:56I found that out from Robin Sharma Robin
  849. 35:59Sharma is the foremost authority on
  850. 36:01speaking about neuroplasticity healing
  851. 36:03and when he found about what I speak
  852. 36:06about he said I am the living embodiment
  853. 36:08of his teachings that through grace and
  854. 36:12dignity and kindness I developed my own
  855. 36:15charisma that carries me with confidence
  856. 36:17and that is the description of what he
  857. 36:19teaches professionals beginners everyone
  858. 36:22to explain neuroplasticity for people
  859. 36:24the neuroplasticity is a reward system
  860. 36:26within your brain where in your
  861. 36:28interactions especially with other human
  862. 36:30beings heals you so people who suffer
  863. 36:34from PTSD people who have had trauma in
  864. 36:37their lives can actually heal themselves
  865. 36:40by being meticulously polite and I began
  866. 36:45all of this when I was released my
  867. 36:48mother sat me down and she said Nikki
  868. 36:51listen to me for you to get out of
  869. 36:54prison and not be a nice man is a waste
  870. 36:57of everyone's time every prayer every
  871. 37:00time someone called me the mother of a
  872. 37:02monster every time a woman spit in my
  873. 37:04face every thing that I went through is
  874. 37:08a waste of time for you not to be a nice
  875. 37:11man so I want you to promise me one
  876. 37:13thing every day I want you to go out say
  877. 37:17yes ma'am
  878. 37:18yes sir and thank you because I want you
  879. 37:22to show respect for who you are in that
  880. 37:23way they hurt this family badly so
  881. 37:27anything I ask
  882. 37:27I didn't notice she handed me the tool
  883. 37:29to healing because neuroplasticity is
  884. 37:33the self contrived act of rewarding
  885. 37:37yourself for being
  886. 37:38a nice person and my gift over the last
  887. 37:4114 years is that I made myself so
  888. 37:45amazingly pliable and gifted at helping
  889. 37:48others find the good within them that's
  890. 37:52the reason I'm truly here today the
  891. 37:55thing that I've been able to accomplish
  892. 37:57through my writing and through my
  893. 37:59efforts is to show people that you take
  894. 38:02things personally in life
  895. 38:03you'd be then a fool because what you've
  896. 38:06done is you've taken all the hurts and
  897. 38:09you've made them to justify reason why
  898. 38:11you have to be an [ __ ] to somebody
  899. 38:13whereas you keep forgetting that you've
  900. 38:16been given a break over and over just to
  901. 38:18be here man dude I've been shot stabbed
  902. 38:21strangled run over by a car hung myself
  903. 38:23in prison to drug overdoses and I had
  904. 38:26accountable trying to murder me for two
  905. 38:27solid years I know that I could fall at
  906. 38:32any moment from my own hand but God
  907. 38:36blessed me I believe so much in my
  908. 38:38purpose in life that I won't kill myself
  909. 38:40I won't give up and it's only because
  910. 38:43I've been tested that I know that it has
  911. 38:47to be for a reason I had dreams about
  912. 38:50all this while I was in death row I had
  913. 38:54the most amazing intense dreams because
  914. 38:56of my suffering and they play out now so
  915. 39:00what happened did I manage to touch
  916. 39:03something we're all chasing or am I in a
  917. 39:06delusional world because I what do you
  918. 39:08mean I told people last last year I told
  919. 39:13everybody on Facebook something was
  920. 39:16going bad was gonna happen and it did
  921. 39:18when my daughter broke her elbow so I
  922. 39:21told everybody before it happened two
  923. 39:24years ago I told my wife Laura I was
  924. 39:26coming back here to meet Anthony Sam and
  925. 39:28Danny and go on the good news network
  926. 39:30and do a thing with Mamie Ali who's a
  927. 39:33good friend of mine and I told him how
  928. 39:37the things would happen and sure enough
  929. 39:39every time it's played out why did you
  930. 39:43think something was gonna bad was gonna
  931. 39:45happen well you said something bad was
  932. 39:47gonna happen your daughter broke her arm
  933. 39:48dude I'm in a meeting with a guy named
  934. 39:50Kevin and John
  935. 39:51I look at them and I say I have to go
  936. 39:53and I'm on Melrose Boulevard
  937. 39:55my daughter is playing in the playground
  938. 39:58a few blocks away and I'm in this
  939. 40:00meeting with these men about my film I
  940. 40:03stand up at the table and I say to him I
  941. 40:05have to go right now I run outside and I
  942. 40:09asked my wife Laura is she okay
  943. 40:11my daughter fell and broke her elbow and
  944. 40:14had to have six pins put into it in
  945. 40:16cedars-sinai we have a sixty three
  946. 40:19thousand dollar bill that it is stuck us
  947. 40:21with but I knew was gonna happen before
  948. 40:23it did and I even told people it was
  949. 40:25gonna happen how can I have that touch
  950. 40:28did you knew that was gonna happen
  951. 40:30specifically I saw the event but not in
  952. 40:33real time so I could make sense of it
  953. 40:36but I saw the greenery at the park when
  954. 40:39we pulled up it was the same and I had
  955. 40:42the flash last night when I met Stedman
  956. 40:44Graham I had all these moments that
  957. 40:46woman last night pinned a thing on my
  958. 40:48collar and she looked just like my
  959. 40:50mother and I had this dream because my
  960. 40:52mom died on September 9th and ten years
  961. 40:55ago I was actually on a flight September
  962. 40:5711 for her funeral and it's all crazy
  963. 41:00how I saw all these things in my dreams
  964. 41:04on death row and they play out and it
  965. 41:06keeps happening with witnesses to my
  966. 41:09life that are recognizing it with me so
  967. 41:11I can't make it up do you don't I mean I
  968. 41:14wish my friend Jason was here he's he's
  969. 41:17been able to help me just put this in
  970. 41:19context and I'm doing this badly but I
  971. 41:21just think there's some how I went
  972. 41:23through an experience so intense that it
  973. 41:26is truly cracked open something that has
  974. 41:29given me a hypersensitivity to things I
  975. 41:32think that it has allowed me truly to be
  976. 41:36humble enough to really give my life for
  977. 41:38a purpose and not be ego driven like I
  978. 41:41have nothing at this moment where we sit
  979. 41:43here but I am so proud of the fact that
  980. 41:46that doesn't never stop me from
  981. 41:47believing and good and you could beat me
  982. 41:51all day you could put in a cage you
  983. 41:53could do whatever you want to me but
  984. 41:54it's up to me didn't make it misery I'm
  985. 41:58choosing not to men I don't care how
  986. 42:01much I got a struggle from this point on
  987. 42:03or what grace is on Grand
  988. 42:05I just want one thing to stay true in my
  989. 42:07life that I don't lose Who I am I fought
  990. 42:10so hard to be this man through a
  991. 42:13childhood of a feeling so inadequate
  992. 42:16because another man raped me to the
  993. 42:18feelings that I was so low of being cast
  994. 42:21aside as a condemned human being that
  995. 42:24then rise up and go and speak before
  996. 42:27governments to the point that Kofi Annan
  997. 42:29told me that I was one of the finest
  998. 42:31speakers in the world to then go and
  999. 42:34follow that and stand at the base of the
1000. 42:36Coliseum where human beings were put to
1001. 42:38death for entertainment and blow twenty
1002. 42:40thousand people away and have it
1003. 42:42flawlessly done and to recognize that I
1004. 42:46had it all within me to do because of
  1005. 42:48one thing that neuroplasticity came a
1006. 42:51charisma the kind of charisma you exude
1007. 42:54so I don't know where it is that you hit
1008. 42:57that point where you decided to really
1009. 42:59believe in yourself but like you said
  1010. 43:01you didn't listen to that [ __ ] that
1011. 43:03people were telling you and once you did
1012. 43:05that you started to contrive all this
  1013. 43:07beautiful charisma because I didn't even
1014. 43:09watch the fight Saturday when you were
  1015. 43:11talking I listened to you and I thought
1016. 43:13he's so flawless it's not even thought
1017. 43:16of but people would never grant you that
1018. 43:19you dad to do something in your heart
1019. 43:21something within you made you believe in
1020. 43:24this guy man listen I have not had much
1021. 43:27resistance at all I'm gonna be honest
1022. 43:28with you like what you're saying about
1023. 43:31me is very kind I really appreciate it
  1024. 43:33but really haven't had much resistance
1025. 43:35yeah but what it is about you it makes
1026. 43:38you believe in yourself bo what happened
1027. 43:41where'd you hit that point well I'm
1028. 43:43pretty sure it came from martial arts
1029. 43:46from martial arts competition when I was
1030. 43:47very young pretty sure from the first
1031. 43:51beat another first win neither neither
1032. 43:53just just how difficult it was just
  1033. 43:59doing it from 15 to before I was 22 I
  1034. 44:05stopped somewhere around 22 but there's
1035. 44:08just the fact that it was so difficult
1036. 44:10that it it taught me hard work taught me
  1037. 44:15focus and
  1038. 44:16and I didn't have anything for that
  1039. 44:18before that I thought it was a loser
  1040. 44:20like a really thought it was a loser I
1041. 44:22don't know my father my stepdads a very
  1042. 44:25nice guy
  1043. 44:26but there's something about growing up
1044. 44:28without a father that is still alive
1045. 44:31that doesn't talk to you and you know my
1046. 44:34mom worked all day my stepdad worked all
1047. 44:36day there was no one around you know I
1048. 44:39just and we moved a lot and how many
  1049. 44:42friends so I just I just I never felt
  1050. 44:46like I was worthwhile that's what I
1051. 44:49wasn't anything like what you
1052. 44:50experienced no nothing but it was enough
1053. 44:52within you that it was the point where I
  1054. 44:56needed to prove myself that's what I
  1055. 44:58need I wanted to show I there was
1056. 45:00something inside me that I needed to
  1057. 45:02show that I wasn't useless and the only
  1058. 45:04way I could show that it wasn't useless
1059. 45:05was by being good at things and
1060. 45:07initially it was art and then after our
1061. 45:10it became martial arts and the martial
1062. 45:12arts thing was more important than art
1063. 45:13because the martial arts tested me like
1064. 45:16art was beautiful because I could draw
1065. 45:18things and people would love them and
1066. 45:20then it made me feel good that people
  1067. 45:21liked my work
  1068. 45:22but it was there's a big difference
1069. 45:24between that and the martial arts the
1070. 45:26martial arts was so difficult to do and
  1071. 45:29to compete at a you know a national
1072. 45:31level it was every time I did it I was
1073. 45:35terrified but after it was over I felt
  1074. 45:38better about myself and I understood
1075. 45:39that I could actually be good at things
1076. 45:41so was the first thing that I ever did
1077. 45:42that gave me a feeling of value so it
1078. 45:45went from being a loser to being an
  1079. 45:48extreme winner
1080. 45:49that's brilliant but it was just it is
1081. 45:52but your point though but you're saying
1082. 45:54that people like held me back and that's
1083. 45:56not really the case it wasn't you know I
1084. 45:59mean I'm sure people judged me one way
1085. 46:02or another because a fear factor or some
1086. 46:04of the other things but the thing about
1087. 46:06going through the martial arts
  1088. 46:08competition and everything when I was
  1089. 46:09young I don't I don't give a [ __ ] how
  1090. 46:11other people view me I don't I just do
  1091. 46:15what I like I do what I like and I try
1092. 46:17to be nice but that's where your
1093. 46:18charisma comes from and where you got
  1094. 46:20that from it's still yours man I admired
  1095. 46:23it a lot of people don't have the
1096. 46:24confidence to do that to shut it off
  1097. 46:26that noise
1098. 46:27that thing that makes us
  1099. 46:29react to everyone else's opinion well I
1100. 46:32react to it I mean I most certainly feel
  1101. 46:34it but I just don't don't I don't let it
  1102. 46:36change the way I I go through life and I
1103. 46:41I think because of the lessons that I've
1104. 46:44learned I try to express that as much as
  1105. 46:46possible for people that haven't gone
  1106. 46:48through those same lessons so I can I
1107. 46:51can I can express that information and
1108. 46:55maybe people can absorb some of it
1109. 46:57without having to go through what I went
1110. 46:58through I think what you went through is
1111. 47:01infinitely more difficult more trying
1112. 47:05and I think that your message and your
1113. 47:10story can show people that in the worst
1114. 47:13possible scenario the beginning of your
  1115. 47:17life as a man you're wrongfully
1116. 47:20committed to life in prison
1117. 47:23you are gonna spend the rest of your
1118. 47:26life until they execute you on death row
1119. 47:29and all the horrors that you've gone
1120. 47:31through to come out of that and to come
1121. 47:34out of that with a purpose of being a
1122. 47:36nice person and learning how to speak
1123. 47:39and learning how to speak clearly and
  1124. 47:41confidently like there's a lesson in
1125. 47:42that that said it I mean I mean this is
1126. 47:46almost like at a out of religious level
1127. 47:50I mean you talk about someone who's
  1128. 47:53created a diamond from pressure and
  1129. 47:56that's what you've done well you've done
  1130. 47:58is you've you've figured out a way to
1131. 48:00despite all this raging hurricane of
1132. 48:03emotion that goes through your mind
1133. 48:04that's causes you to cry when you think
1134. 48:06about these things you can express
1135. 48:09yourself in a very clear way that lets
1136. 48:13people it just at least peer through the
  1137. 48:15window into what you've experienced in
1138. 48:19your life and it can give people a
  1139. 48:23perspective that they're just is very
  1140. 48:26very rare that someone gets [ __ ] over
1141. 48:29in life as bad as you did very very rare
1142. 48:32and it's even more rare to come through
1143. 48:35at the end with a sense of purpose every
1144. 48:37day of my life someone writes me and
  1145. 48:39tells me they didn't kill themselves
  1146. 48:40today
1147. 48:41every day man did his stop drugs there's
1148. 48:46a young man living in my house named
1149. 48:48Zack hers is really good friend of mine
1150. 48:50he really changed his whole life since
1151. 48:53meeting me even my close friends have
1152. 48:57told me that I've changed their life and
  1153. 49:01I appreciate it because I recognize a
1154. 49:05lot of times it's the good within then
1155. 49:07that's resonating and I'm proud of the
1156. 49:10fact that I have sat and listened to the
  1157. 49:15words I kind of deserve for what I've
  1158. 49:18tried
1159. 49:18now I'm gonna learn in the future to
1160. 49:21accept the graces that you just did for
1161. 49:22me because in the past I always tried to
1162. 49:25as you see diminish it I have worked
1163. 49:29very hard I have worked very hard to
1164. 49:31craft my work into writing and like your
  1165. 49:35drawings I was so proud of having a
1166. 49:38number one best seller in my first book
1167. 49:41and I was so proud of using my talent as
1168. 49:44a writer to then articulate what it's
1169. 49:47like to lose a baby and my journey
1170. 49:48through her eyes or to use this last
1171. 49:51effort in monsters a madman to to tell
  1172. 49:54people it's okay to have a bigger secret
1173. 49:56than the one that people know you by and
1174. 49:58still live with it and then when it's
1175. 50:00right you can share it where I've made a
  1176. 50:02point that I'm done writing because I've
1177. 50:05accomplished all my work as a writer and
1178. 50:07now I want to do one thing well I want
1179. 50:09to help young students around the world
1180. 50:11take themselves seriously with their
  1181. 50:13education I did over 500 of them in
1182. 50:16schools over England and Europe and
1183. 50:18stuff I loved it man I got all these
1184. 50:21young lads and lasses to come back to me
1185. 50:24and show me degrees that they got when I
1186. 50:26showed him how important her education
  1187. 50:28was and I I'm I really thrive in that
  1188. 50:31environment because I think that's where
1189. 50:34everything still is for me somehow like
1190. 50:39I'm that kid you know who won't let go
1191. 50:41of needing to still chase the good in my
  1192. 50:46life and I know there's bad things in
  1193. 50:49the woods and I know there's brilliant
1194. 50:51things in the woods I'm still willing to
  1195. 50:54walk that
  1196. 50:55and find something meaningful and that's
1197. 50:57what I came here to really say is that I
1198. 50:59want to make an impact with my words but
1199. 51:04not overdo it so I don't want to do any
1200. 51:08other podcast after this one except for
1201. 51:11my friend Brian's but I want to do the
1202. 51:14meaningful thing without it having to be
1203. 51:17attached to the social media draw that
1204. 51:22has hurt my life so much social media
1205. 51:24draw that has hurt your life how does it
1206. 51:26hurt your life well when my daughter
1207. 51:28broke her arm and we put up a GoFundMe
  1208. 51:30page I was viciously attacked because
1209. 51:32people expect me to have funds but they
1210. 51:34don't know you know things effectively
1211. 51:36have funds because the movie in the book
  1212. 51:38yeah and I'm not I have nothing I
1213. 51:40borrowed money to get here like people
  1214. 51:43don't know that I'm wearing a shirt my
1215. 51:45friend because he funded me to be here
1216. 51:48you know so I'd have food was here it's
1217. 51:50like that real no so people don't want
1218. 51:53me to not succeed like I hurt their
1219. 51:57image of me if I don't have wealth in
1220. 51:59addition to being this person before
  1221. 52:01then I just think people just they don't
1222. 52:04understand you know the people see
1223. 52:06someone else's life and they like to
1224. 52:08assume the worst and they like to
1225. 52:10criticize you whenever they have an
1226. 52:12opportunity so if they see any
1227. 52:13vulnerability they pounce and you know
1228. 52:17what you've gone through is the opposite
1229. 52:19of what most people go through people
1230. 52:22have difficult times in their life but
1231. 52:23more than difficult times you know what
1232. 52:25they have they have long periods where
  1233. 52:29they don't have anything happen where
1234. 52:31life is boring and life is just a dull
1235. 52:35gray and life is just work and coming
1236. 52:39home from work and the trials and
1237. 52:40tribulations of that and traffic and the
1238. 52:43kind of insane experiences that you have
1239. 52:48being wrongly convicted and spending
1240. 52:50twenty two years confined in a cage
1241. 52:54forced to fight because of vicious
1242. 52:58psychopath guards that those kind of
1243. 53:02experiences are the experiences that
1244. 53:04allowed you to come out of it
  1245. 53:05this
  1246. 53:07very kind very open-minded person who's
1247. 53:12trying to better yourself and wants to
1248. 53:15see the best in other people the people
1249. 53:17that go through their life in this dull
1250. 53:19state of jealousy and bitterness and
1251. 53:23resentment and just constantly focused
  1252. 53:28on themselves a self obsessive culture
1253. 53:31that we have and one of the things about
  1254. 53:33social media that's most [ __ ] up is
1255. 53:35you're looking at all these other
  1256. 53:36people's lives and [ __ ] on them and
1257. 53:39comparing yourself to them and finding
1258. 53:42faults and them and attacking them in
1259. 53:44the comment section and attacking what
1260. 53:47and the people that are doing that
  1261. 53:49they're all doing that because they're
  1262. 53:50in there in agony they're in a different
1263. 53:52kind of agony than you but it's an agony
1264. 53:54of nothing I know and I looked at it and
  1265. 53:58I thought I try to craft a beautiful
1266. 54:01message on the social medias so that I
1267. 54:03don't get caught up into arguments and I
1268. 54:05always try to show the good in the world
1269. 54:06and that's why I love like the good news
  1270. 54:09network I'll trying to liberally stay
1271. 54:10away from things that poison my mind
  1272. 54:13because I don't want to contribute I
1273. 54:14don't want to get caught up in the Trump
1274. 54:16error argument or the previous argument
1275. 54:18or the new argument I want to post
1276. 54:20meaningful messages of good because
1277. 54:22that's my overall message so I thought
  1278. 54:24recently maybe I can contrive three
1279. 54:27beautiful messages for Twitter Facebook
1280. 54:29and Instagram and I could leave out this
1281. 54:31wonderful message and then I can go
1282. 54:33about my business of going back into
1283. 54:35schools and talking to students because
1284. 54:37it gets too chaotic in addition to all
1285. 54:41the lovely messages of the wonderful
1286. 54:44human beings that listen to me speak or
1287. 54:48they saw the film fear of 13 read one of
1288. 54:50my books there's also a lot of women out
1289. 54:53there men and they've been harassing me
1290. 54:55and bothering me and it's put a lot of
  1291. 54:57conflict in my life and I don't want
1292. 55:00that harassing you in bothering you how
1293. 55:02a lot of women fall in love because of
1294. 55:04the film the film made me look very
1295. 55:06attractive yeah what is it about women
1296. 55:08and men that are on death row - the sad
  1297. 55:10one - yeah I know said yeah they'll
1298. 55:12contact me and tell me about their
  1299. 55:14inmate I'm not a name
  1300. 55:15I'm not a death-row prisoner I was on
1301. 55:17death row that is a strange obsession
1302. 55:19because women have yeah and it goes to a
1303. 55:22psychological feature of women who can
1304. 55:26fix things with their lung so they want
1305. 55:29me to deceive my wife to be with them
1306. 55:32but not be deceitful they want me to
1307. 55:34ignore all the social chaos I could
1308. 55:36cause to go and leave a family to be
1309. 55:38with them but they still want to harass
1310. 55:40me and it was so bad recently even on my
1311. 55:42anniversary I had to cut off people who
  1312. 55:44were bothering me I have a an active
  1313. 55:47stalker in my life
1314. 55:48it's all kind of crazy I've gone through
1315. 55:51a lot of experiences where the social
1316. 55:53media has really tested me so I thought
1317. 55:55I'm gonna try and be like the dude all
1318. 55:57right so they're gonna execute me said
1319. 55:58that twice yeah the dude is the guide it
1320. 56:01knows all right so this is my last scene
1321. 56:03you don't mean like from The Big
1322. 56:04Lebowski kind of like the dude man like
1323. 56:06the dude so seriously Jeff Bridges one
1324. 56:10of my heroes what a moment you know
1325. 56:12Chris Pine Jeff Bridges Ben Foster being
1326. 56:15interviewed about Hell in high water and
1327. 56:16they asked Chris Pine what are you
1328. 56:18watching he goes oh my god I got to tell
1329. 56:21you about fear of 13 I got to tell you
1330. 56:23about Nicki iris madness dude is the
  1331. 56:25[ __ ] you don't I mean and my phone goes
  1332. 56:27yeah I had dinner with him he's a really
1333. 56:29really cool dude man Wow
1334. 56:32you need to have Chris on he's a very
  1335. 56:34cool dude he's really introspective and
  1336. 56:36he's deep like he's a real good
  1337. 56:38conversationalist
1338. 56:39all right so time what else has he been
  1339. 56:42in he's immature
1340. 56:44oh dude he just he just did the one with
1341. 56:48Oprah too and he did the one before that
1342. 56:50with the Star Trek oh that guy yeah
1343. 56:54Chris Wonder Woman yeah sounds great I'm
1344. 56:58telling you man what have any a to
1345. 57:00invite me to dinner and hang out one and
1346. 57:02even Harvey Weinstein pops in for a
  1347. 57:04minute
  1348. 57:05holla I'm like no and he's like Harvey
1349. 57:09you just produced that documentary about
1350. 57:10the dude that was in jail or everything
1351. 57:12hit the fan yeah this is four things
1352. 57:14went tits up I know yeah no I had this
1353. 57:17real great blessing so alejandro
1354. 57:19Monteverde who did the little boy with
1355. 57:22Kevin James he has an amazing life story
1356. 57:25himself I mean as his family was
  1357. 57:28abducted
1358. 57:28kidnappers and executed this is real
  1359. 57:31drama the day I meet this man I'm at a
1360. 57:35red-carpet event in LA and he goes home
1361. 57:37and watches fear of thirteen and he
1362. 57:39comes back and he tells me I'm gonna
  1363. 57:43make your movie I'm gonna help you I
1364. 57:45don't know how but God told me there's
  1365. 57:47certain movies I have to make and he's
1366. 57:49making one right now with Tim Ballard
1367. 57:50from the CIA about rescuing children
1368. 57:54from the sex trades and stuff so he's
1369. 57:55doing really serious work he said he
1370. 57:57wants to make a feature films that are
1371. 57:59gonna make a feature film about me
1372. 58:00called conviction right now it might be
  1373. 58:02changed but I got the script and it's
1374. 58:04[ __ ] hard man to read but we have all
1375. 58:07these a-list actors and my dream of
1376. 58:08course is Chris Pine because I think
1377. 58:10he's one of the best right but I have no
1378. 58:12say but I get this amazing chance to
1379. 58:15come out here and meet all these people
1380. 58:16for the film being made and I realized
1381. 58:20it's all meant to be man like all this
1382. 58:22crazy stuff so maybe if I craft my
1383. 58:25message right I can step back and let
  1384. 58:28people appreciate the message I had
  1385. 58:30without distorting it because I don't
1386. 58:32want to ruin it I don't want to go too
1387. 58:34far and end up making a fool of myself
1388. 58:38when I thought the right thing to do was
1389. 58:39teach people about neuroplasticity and
1390. 58:41how to make yourself a really badass
1391. 58:44outside the ring by being a kind man and
1392. 58:46how to rarely make yourself a really
1393. 58:49nice person to the family and loved ones
1394. 58:50by having the self respect about
1395. 58:52yourself to be patient in life and
1396. 58:54things like that you know and don't ruin
  1397. 58:57it so that's what I keep saying don't
1398. 58:59ruin it you know when you're talking
1399. 59:01about social media I think one thing to
1400. 59:03take into consideration is when you do
1401. 59:04something like a GoFundMe or any anytime
1402. 59:07there's anything controversial those are
1403. 59:10magnets for hate and you might think
1404. 59:12that everyone hates you but what you're
1405. 59:14dealing with is a very small amount of
1406. 59:17people from a very large amount of
  1407. 59:19people I know that's a if you're
1408. 59:21thinking about the whole planet right
  1409. 59:22all the english-speaking people you're
1410. 59:24dealing with hundreds and hundreds of
1411. 59:26millions of people that believe so much
1412. 59:28in what you said that's why I'm here now
1413. 59:30because on my website Nikki RS org we
  1414. 59:33organized so today's listeners can go
1415. 59:35there and download copies of my book I
1416. 59:37can get out of destitute times I can get
1417. 59:40my life together we did everything we
  1418. 59:42could
1419. 59:42knowing that this podcast has reached a
  1420. 59:44million people so you're right I do I
1421. 59:46mean even you like your social media
1422. 59:47what I mean is just that the thing is to
1423. 59:49not get caught up in the numbers that
1424. 59:52come out you that are negative because
1425. 59:54it's just a sheer matter of volume all
  1426. 59:57right if you're reaching people through
  1427. 59:58the internet you're reaching who knows
1428. 1:00:01how many human beings I think one out of
1429. 1:00:04a hundred is gonna be the type of person
1430. 1:00:07that wants to send a hateful message
  1431. 1:00:08because it's easy because they don't
1432. 1:00:10have to look you in the eyes when they
1433. 1:00:12do it they don't have to feel any social
  1434. 1:00:15consequences they don't have to feel
1435. 1:00:17your pain when they insult you or or you
1436. 1:00:20know say awful things about you or your
  1437. 1:00:22family they're doing it because they
  1438. 1:00:24want to affect you because they're
  1439. 1:00:25hurting and they're hurting for a very
  1440. 1:00:27different reason than the way you're
1441. 1:00:29hurting but this is what's wrong with
1442. 1:00:31social media is because human beings are
1443. 1:00:34not meant to communicate that way we
1444. 1:00:36lose our humanity in this very shallow
1445. 1:00:39form of interaction because all those
  1446. 1:00:43parts what's what's important about
1447. 1:00:45people's looking them in the eyes
1448. 1:00:46talking to them hugging them shaking
1449. 1:00:49their hand communicating honestly and
1450. 1:00:51anytime you you're missing any of those
1451. 1:00:54pieces when you communicate dishonestly
  1452. 1:00:56when you don't want to shake someone's
1453. 1:00:58hand when you don't want to look them in
1454. 1:00:59the eye when you don't want to enter in
1455. 1:01:00your interact with them when you don't
1456. 1:01:02care about them as a person all those
  1457. 1:01:04things leave you feeling like [ __ ] and
  1458. 1:01:07all those that's true you're right the
1459. 1:01:09the social media is the worst form of it
1460. 1:01:12because it's just text you have to
  1461. 1:01:14interpret it yourself you don't know
  1462. 1:01:15what the [ __ ] is going on there life you
1463. 1:01:17don't know who they are but you read
1464. 1:01:19that text and you absorb it personally
1465. 1:01:22you absorb it personally you take it in
1466. 1:01:24the worst possible form and you you feel
1467. 1:01:27that critique in your chest you feel it
1468. 1:01:30you feel it in your head I know I guess
1469. 1:01:32I got caught up in this notion that I
1470. 1:01:34could just go be a normal guy and I have
1471. 1:01:37a normal job and people would leave me
  1472. 1:01:38alone
1473. 1:01:39well they would if you weren't on social
1474. 1:01:42media and then I've already entered that
1475. 1:01:45form so well you don't have to stay in
  1476. 1:01:47that form but that's true but here's the
1477. 1:01:48thing even if you do use that form you
1478. 1:01:50know what you can do you just don't
  1479. 1:01:52interact you know that's the thing
  1480. 1:01:55that's what I said I was going to
1481. 1:01:56it's it's hard for people to understand
1482. 1:01:58that are on the outside like will you
  1483. 1:02:00[ __ ] I love you I want you to
1484. 1:02:02interact with me because I love you you
1485. 1:02:04know and I want you to recognize that
  1486. 1:02:05I'm recognizing you and I appreciate
1487. 1:02:08that for people but they have to
1488. 1:02:09understand the volume of people that
1489. 1:02:11someone like you is dealing with that's
1490. 1:02:12what I tried to convey and I try it very
1491. 1:02:14sincerely never to be ignorant to people
  1492. 1:02:16and you know it's it's [ __ ]
1493. 1:02:18mind-blowing joke because I had my mind
1494. 1:02:20made up and now I've realized that I do
1495. 1:02:23and it all goes back to a conversation
1496. 1:02:26what little boy Jason daily me and him
1497. 1:02:29we're driving along the 405 one day and
1498. 1:02:31film4 at fear of 13s about to come out
  1499. 1:02:33and I told him I didn't wanted to come
1500. 1:02:35out and he said you don't own that film
  1501. 1:02:39every kid that's ever had a shitty
  1502. 1:02:41childhood owns that film everybody who's
  1503. 1:02:44got a broken marriage or a shitty life
1504. 1:02:46or his really struggling owns that film
  1505. 1:02:48if you [ __ ] this up I'll never be your
1506. 1:02:50friend again man and he was right I
  1507. 1:02:53don't own the fear of 13 and I don't own
1508. 1:02:56really anything of it but it's message
1509. 1:02:59is so beautiful I did what I could to
1510. 1:03:01tell my story because we're all living
1511. 1:03:04our life as an experience but we can
1512. 1:03:06only convey it as a memory and I did
1513. 1:03:08beautifully for myself I'm so proud of
  1514. 1:03:10the effort I made I don't care that the
  1515. 1:03:12director Rob me I'll make my way I don't
1516. 1:03:15care what I went through to this moment
  1517. 1:03:16because I truly appreciate the person
1518. 1:03:19who wrote me last night and said two
  1519. 1:03:21weeks ago I was released from a mental
1520. 1:03:23hospital after trying to kill myself and
1521. 1:03:25my mom sat me down and made me watch
1522. 1:03:27film mmm now in the last two weeks I've
1523. 1:03:31been going to therapy and I'm getting my
  1524. 1:03:32[ __ ] together
  1525. 1:03:33I don't film Jo and I don't own my
1526. 1:03:36message I guess my message is taken one
1527. 1:03:39by the people who love me or not you're
1528. 1:03:41right I'm not going to be bothered by
  1529. 1:03:43the negatives I had a terrible
  1530. 1:03:45experience with a stalker for 12 years
1531. 1:03:47who won't leave me alone and it cost me
1532. 1:03:48my daughter and a divorce is all kind of
1533. 1:03:52crazy stuff so it was really affecting
1534. 1:03:54me and my current wife and I didn't like
  1535. 1:03:55it but I think I'm gonna actually beat a
1536. 1:03:58dude and just hang around for a little
1537. 1:03:59bit longer and make you proud of me for
1538. 1:04:01what I do from here on well don't worry
  1539. 1:04:03about me man
1540. 1:04:04now everyone that I love though to
1541. 1:04:06always be on that list
1542. 1:04:08I really that's what you use for
  1543. 1:04:10motivation yeah that's that's great and
1544. 1:04:12there's nothing wrong with that but I
1545. 1:04:15think that what you can do and what you
1546. 1:04:18are doing is show that you can you can
1547. 1:04:22overcome things you can overcome
1548. 1:04:24horrible things some of the most
  1549. 1:04:25horrible experiences a person could ever
1550. 1:04:27face you can overcome them and you have
1551. 1:04:30and those messages they give people
1552. 1:04:33inspiration and inspiration is one of
1553. 1:04:35the greatest things you can give a
  1554. 1:04:36person and you're inspiring me today I
1555. 1:04:39told you since this man ever since we
  1556. 1:04:41started communicating I told you I mean
1557. 1:04:43this I even went out of my way today to
1558. 1:04:45Matt Matt rang me your producer and I
1559. 1:04:49wanted to make a point right away I said
1560. 1:04:51dude I know a lot of people climb right
1561. 1:04:53past you to go to Joe but I wanted to
1562. 1:04:55tell you thank you for helping me and my
1563. 1:04:57family thing thank you for helping
1564. 1:04:59organize I made sure that Jamie got my
1565. 1:05:01love when I came in the room because he
1566. 1:05:03organized my trip it was so cool while
1567. 1:05:05he got me into the writer airport and
1568. 1:05:07everything right because I know that is
1569. 1:05:09so important to that man because a lot
1570. 1:05:12of people won't make that effort Joe and
1571. 1:05:14I don't want to be a guy to misses my
1572. 1:05:15chance so I must say thank you and yes
1573. 1:05:18ma'am and yes sir to everyone like my
1574. 1:05:20mom asked me and make sure never to
  1575. 1:05:22overlook people because that's truly my
1576. 1:05:24message my kindness makes me able to
1577. 1:05:27come back my good heart is made better
1578. 1:05:30by the fact that I've won a believe in
  1579. 1:05:31good and it's crazy how it's come back
1580. 1:05:34to reward me in so many ways like do you
1581. 1:05:37remember when Muhammad Ali died you know
  1582. 1:05:40yeah well I didn't know Anthony Salman
  1583. 1:05:43Donnie I didn't know his story but one
  1584. 1:05:46day I get contacted by a man who's seen
1585. 1:05:49the fair of 13 and I learned that he
1586. 1:05:51went to university out here and he
  1587. 1:05:52became a lawyer cause a little promise
1588. 1:05:54to his mother to be a good person he
1589. 1:05:56goes to the mosque every Friday and
1590. 1:05:58becomes close friends with Muhammad and
1591. 1:06:00they go to dinner every night with
1592. 1:06:01maymay on Fridays you know and he become
1593. 1:06:03real close and he tells me the story how
1594. 1:06:05at a young age Muhammad looks him in the
1595. 1:06:07face and says you're going to be one of
1596. 1:06:10the men who carries my message in life
  1597. 1:06:11and he's like I'm 22 what could I
1598. 1:06:15possibly have to offer anyone
1599. 1:06:17so he goes to this experience and on the
1600. 1:06:21day that Muhammad Ali had approval from
1601. 1:06:23the government Patent Office for this
1602. 1:06:25bracelet that says within good there is
1603. 1:06:27God he called me in England where I was
1604. 1:06:31at the time and he says I have a
1605. 1:06:33question for you I saw your film learned
1606. 1:06:36a lot about you since then why aren't
1607. 1:06:40you bitter ma'am why are you still
1608. 1:06:41willing to believe and I said my mother
1609. 1:06:45never prayed for anything but good she
1610. 1:06:46always told me the only good there was
1611. 1:06:48was in bliss within God he said are you
1612. 1:06:53kidding me hold on and he starts sending
  1613. 1:06:55me to stuff I didn't know that earlier
  1614. 1:06:57that day Muhammad Ali's bracelet would
1615. 1:06:59be you know approved by the patent I
1616. 1:07:02didn't know any of that but it was those
1617. 1:07:04words you see what I mean about the
1618. 1:07:06synchronicity of all this craziness in
1619. 1:07:07my life the next thing you know I'm and
  1620. 1:07:09in Los Angeles
1621. 1:07:10I'm meeting alejandro he wants to help
1622. 1:07:13me make the movie I meet all these
1623. 1:07:15wonderful people like Adam Kalinin from
  1624. 1:07:17bottle keeper he's such a sweet guide
1625. 1:07:19they came up with this company on the
1626. 1:07:21beach couple years ago and now it's
1627. 1:07:23doing very well for keeping drinks cold
1628. 1:07:24and he stood wonders for me and my wife
1629. 1:07:27this man is such a lovely guy that I
1630. 1:07:30wouldn't be in this chair without him or
1631. 1:07:32Anthony or any of these people right and
1632. 1:07:34then Anthony sets up mamie Ali and he
1633. 1:07:38brings me out and we have a podcast and
  1634. 1:07:43he doesn't tell her a word about me
  1635. 1:07:45before him
  1636. 1:07:47now what's crazy was I'm doing this
1637. 1:07:51interview right behind where I used to
1638. 1:07:53sleep on the street and I think I kept
1639. 1:07:55all that quiet did some my best work
1640. 1:07:57when I was homeless and I do this thing
1641. 1:08:00and may may looks at me and says no
1642. 1:08:02disrespect to my father Muhammad Ali but
1643. 1:08:05you're one of the most influential men I
1644. 1:08:06ever met my life and within five minutes
  1645. 1:08:09of meeting you I'm already changing
1646. 1:08:11things about my life I decided right
1647. 1:08:14then okay then I have to own that man I
1648. 1:08:17have to live it for her man like I could
1649. 1:08:20never go back I can't go back and be an
  1650. 1:08:24average [ __ ] mindless angry person I
1651. 1:08:28can't be caught up in the drama of
  1652. 1:08:29everyday stupid
1653. 1:08:31[ __ ] like I gotta oh it to that girl you
1654. 1:08:33know and I have ever since I met her
1655. 1:08:36she's wanted the nicest people in my
1656. 1:08:38life man I have some amazing friends Joe
1657. 1:08:41I really mean it man and there's so many
  1658. 1:08:44connections to your life you wouldn't
1659. 1:08:45even know like dude when people found
1660. 1:08:48out I was coming to meet you every one
1661. 1:08:51of them said the same pretty much the
  1662. 1:08:53same thing
  1663. 1:08:53Joe's such a nice Duty so intelligent I
1664. 1:08:57love listening to him I work with
  1665. 1:08:59educators on a platform code necklace
1666. 1:09:02they love your stem Pro cast
1667. 1:09:04I know people up in Waterbury
1668. 1:09:06Connecticut to teach out of the
  1669. 1:09:08self-defense class called practical
1670. 1:09:10self-defense third right now going crazy
1671. 1:09:12because you know they know Joe
1672. 1:09:14Jesse Kazakov skis on the first bellator
1673. 1:09:17card you know these guys are really
1674. 1:09:19crazy like Alex Cortes and all them dick
  1675. 1:09:22they're like Joe is so next-level I'm
1676. 1:09:25saying so are you it's like Joe showing
1677. 1:09:29you to believe in yourself because he
1678. 1:09:30didn't get there because he had like
  1679. 1:09:33been handed this [ __ ] like I remember
1680. 1:09:36reading stories about you go into the
1681. 1:09:37MMA and just doing it so you could drink
1682. 1:09:39money man like the get free tickets and
  1683. 1:09:41go in right yeah that's true ain't it
1684. 1:09:44yeah when I first started working for
1685. 1:09:45the UFC I did the first not for money
1686. 1:09:47right I did the first 15 shows for free
1687. 1:09:49for free yeah see what I mean well it
1688. 1:09:53was probably foolish financially my
  1689. 1:09:55manager didn't think was a good idea I
  1690. 1:09:57just didn't care I just I was enjoying
  1691. 1:09:59it that's what I love that guy it's what
1692. 1:10:02I want to do man I want to be - dude man
  1693. 1:10:04was also a struggling company that I
1694. 1:10:06believed in I wanted to help them but
  1695. 1:10:08what you're saying is interesting
1696. 1:10:10because you the one theme that you keep
1697. 1:10:13repeating that you want to do things for
1698. 1:10:15other people you keep saying that like
1699. 1:10:17you wanted to do that from maymay you
1700. 1:10:20wanted to make me proud yeah this is a
1701. 1:10:22constant theme that you you want you
1702. 1:10:26want to do good for other people that's
1703. 1:10:28an amazing amazing mindset for someone
1704. 1:10:32who's been through everything that
1705. 1:10:33you've been through that that sentiment
1706. 1:10:35that that and then your gratitude that's
1707. 1:10:38another very very powerful thing
1708. 1:10:40gratitude love and gratitude or two of
  1709. 1:10:43the most in
1710. 1:10:44incredible expressions and some of the
1711. 1:10:47most influential because when you show
1712. 1:10:49true gratitude to people and true love
1713. 1:10:51to people they feel that it that affects
1714. 1:10:54the way they interact with the rest of
  1715. 1:10:56the people that they're gonna experience
1716. 1:10:57like if they run into a new person just
1717. 1:11:00moments after meeting you they will be
1718. 1:11:02nicer and they will feel that gratitude
1719. 1:11:05and feel that love that's real and
1720. 1:11:07that's one thing that we all can do you
  1721. 1:11:09know this thought that we're all a
1722. 1:11:10powerless and helpless it's one of the
1723. 1:11:13problems with this this society is that
1724. 1:11:16the society is so overwhelming we have
1725. 1:11:19so much information coming at us and the
1726. 1:11:21message is that what's important is you
1727. 1:11:24know beautiful girls with short skirts
1728. 1:11:26and fast shiny cars and big giant houses
1729. 1:11:30and private jets and diamond rings and
1730. 1:11:33expensive watches and all this horseshit
1731. 1:11:37and this is what people seek they seek
1732. 1:11:40that instead of seeking love and
  1733. 1:11:41gratitude because it doesn't seem that
  1734. 1:11:44that's important but that's way more
  1735. 1:11:46important it's everything because that
1736. 1:11:48literally changes the world it changes
1737. 1:11:50the it side you know I always thought
1738. 1:11:52that expression the wings of the
  1739. 1:11:53butterfly eventually become a hurricane
  1740. 1:11:55that's [ __ ] stupid because that
1741. 1:11:56doesn't work that way a butterfly it
1742. 1:11:58just generates a very small amount of
  1743. 1:11:59wind and they're small and it doesn't
1744. 1:12:01really work that way but the idea behind
1745. 1:12:03it what would it would what it
1746. 1:12:05represents as a metaphor is that you
1747. 1:12:10literally buy your one person that lives
1748. 1:12:14amongst 300 plus million people in this
1749. 1:12:17country one person with love and
1750. 1:12:20gratitude and inspiration especially the
1751. 1:12:23way you can express yourself that
1752. 1:12:26affects people you come in contact with
1753. 1:12:28and that in turn affects they people
1754. 1:12:31they come in contact with and that
1755. 1:12:33literally can change the world it
  1756. 1:12:35actually could change the world there's
  1757. 1:12:36a real plasticity man that's what I'm
1758. 1:12:38good at I know it I've helped so many
  1759. 1:12:41people heal their lives when I've
1760. 1:12:42interacted with them and tense time I've
1761. 1:12:45made it let me stop you because this is
1762. 1:12:47one thing that you said to me before the
1763. 1:12:49podcast you said it again during the
1764. 1:12:50podcast do you only want to do this one
1765. 1:12:53podcast you don't want to say anymore
1766. 1:12:55and I want to ask you why
1767. 1:12:57because if you have this powerful
1768. 1:12:59message the more people you reach and
1769. 1:13:01the more you express yourself with this
  1770. 1:13:03message you're not gonna cheapen your
  1771. 1:13:04message what you're gonna do is you're
1772. 1:13:06gonna get it out to more and more people
1773. 1:13:08and the more people that you can get out
1774. 1:13:10your words and the way you express
  1775. 1:13:12yourself that's gonna affect people it's
1776. 1:13:15gonna affect people in a very very
1777. 1:13:17positive way okay but the other side of
1778. 1:13:21that that no one can appreciate is that
  1779. 1:13:23I'm failed I haven't been able to get
  1780. 1:13:26anything going I tried to start a pond
1781. 1:13:27no no no no I had let me let me stop you
1782. 1:13:29let me stop you you're not failed first
1783. 1:13:32of all you've only been out of jail for
  1784. 1:13:3313 years that's [ __ ] crazy you were
1785. 1:13:36in jail for 22 years on death row
1786. 1:13:39there's not a whole lot of people get
1787. 1:13:40through that experience and can tie
  1788. 1:13:42their own [ __ ] shoes after they're
1789. 1:13:44done you know you you're you have every
1790. 1:13:46right in the world to be shell-shocked
  1791. 1:13:49and incapacitated you're not it's hard
  1792. 1:13:52to get things going
1793. 1:13:53the world does not open its doors for
1794. 1:13:56you and success does not come easy it
1795. 1:13:58doesn't work that way so for you say you
  1796. 1:14:00failed you haven't failed you've already
  1797. 1:14:01written books you've already have a
1798. 1:14:03documentary made about you you're in the
  1799. 1:14:06process of making a feature-length film
  1800. 1:14:08about your life that's not a failure no
1801. 1:14:10I I just failed in getting the platforms
  1802. 1:14:12together that I need it's and I guess
  1803. 1:14:14I'm failing it's just it doesn't always
1804. 1:14:16work out right the first time it's not
  1805. 1:14:19it's not a fail you're not a failure
1806. 1:14:21okay then here's the deal for you sir
1807. 1:14:23prove your words right to me and come on
  1808. 1:14:25when I get my [ __ ] together you come on
1809. 1:14:28to my podcast and we finish the
1810. 1:14:29conversation later on I would do that
  1811. 1:14:32but even if I didn't doesn't matter all
1812. 1:14:34right you can do anything but I just
1813. 1:14:36want to show you you yourself this idea
  1814. 1:14:39that your you've failed is crazy it's
1815. 1:14:42you you have not failed if you've done
1816. 1:14:44things look first of all everyone does
1817. 1:14:48things that don't succeed and then you
1818. 1:14:50recalibrate and you adjust you try again
1819. 1:14:52no one succeeds and wins the world
1820. 1:14:55championship in their first fight no one
  1821. 1:14:57writes a book without learning English
1822. 1:15:00and without practicing essays that
  1823. 1:15:03becomes the greatest book the world's
  1824. 1:15:05ever read read
1825. 1:15:06written whatever you you you you take
1826. 1:15:09time and you learn this is what life is
  1827. 1:15:13about
1828. 1:15:13life is about this process and through
1829. 1:15:16that process you find yourself through
1830. 1:15:18the difficult tasks that you undertake
1831. 1:15:22maybe adjust and you become better you
1832. 1:15:27said you started a podcast you fit well
1833. 1:15:29how long did you do it for I didn't
1834. 1:15:30never cut off the crown no one believes
  1835. 1:15:32in me
1836. 1:15:34I know I'm just saying first of all the
1837. 1:15:36podcasts are easy man with that phone
1838. 1:15:38you have right there I'm sure that phone
  1839. 1:15:40has a audio recorder I've done by 11 my
1840. 1:15:44eleven dollar phone probably does oh
1841. 1:15:46they all do yeah every phone does that's
  1842. 1:15:48not eleven all right - a regular Android
1843. 1:15:50phone right yeah no sighted phone it's
1844. 1:15:53finished one of these wafer these mean
  1845. 1:15:57look if you had this phone [ __ ] ten
1846. 1:16:00years ago people think you were a wizard
1847. 1:16:01yeah man if you're in the fifth century
1848. 1:16:03of course yeah well that fart so sure
1849. 1:16:06has Joe you know you're kicking me into
1850. 1:16:08this right and I'm gonna have to respond
1851. 1:16:10because of the way I've always been
  1852. 1:16:12wired I'm gonna do this then I do
  1853. 1:16:15anything I am just no listen I am
1854. 1:16:17alright you need never again encourage
1855. 1:16:19me sir okay if I go around doing that
1856. 1:16:22for now I have been rough on myself
  1857. 1:16:24because I thought I'd have a platform
1858. 1:16:25and accomplish the things that I wanted
  1859. 1:16:27to and I felt really shitty that I
1860. 1:16:29wasn't able to take care and provide for
1861. 1:16:30my family and that's the heart of it
1862. 1:16:32really there's the struggle on that side
  1863. 1:16:34I wouldn't give a [ __ ] about Fame I've
1864. 1:16:36had the most amazing experiences my life
1865. 1:16:38man while my first interviews was the
1866. 1:16:40Village Voice and the woman learns me at
1867. 1:16:42the end Jennifer Connor man she says man
1868. 1:16:44you know you're living one of the
1869. 1:16:46greatest stories ever told man this
1870. 1:16:48ain't no joke and every time she's told
1871. 1:16:50me that words in my head I realized
  1872. 1:16:53comes with a hell of a ride in a price
1873. 1:16:56so if I gonna own it I gotta own all of
1874. 1:16:59it I keep telling people to own it when
1875. 1:17:00you do well so maybe I needed to bounce
1876. 1:17:03back and this is the - step forward and
1877. 1:17:05start kicking ass again and maybe that
1878. 1:17:07will get me out of those cheerful days
1879. 1:17:09that I've had to go through well you
  1880. 1:17:10have every right to have a struggle I
1881. 1:17:13mean if anybody has any right to have
  1882. 1:17:16difficult it's
  1883. 1:17:17emotions and a difficulty expressing
  1884. 1:17:20those emotions it's you I and I
1885. 1:17:23understand how you could dwell on things
1886. 1:17:25not succeeding the way you anticipated
1887. 1:17:28wanted them to but you just gotta keep
1888. 1:17:30going man you know I'm such an honest
1889. 1:17:32person I could never come on here and
1890. 1:17:33fake it you know I could never do that
1891. 1:17:35for you man I thought that would be so
1892. 1:17:37insincere so I just came in here and I
1893. 1:17:40decided let's pour it out honestly we
1894. 1:17:42did and I feel like the best thing about
1895. 1:17:45it is I chose like you're so like me in
1896. 1:17:48so many ways on the on the down low like
1897. 1:17:50you just you just want good like you
1898. 1:17:53just want to have a purposeful message
1899. 1:17:55that you want to share and that's what I
  1900. 1:17:57thought was really cool I had a really
1901. 1:17:59cool experience last year I went to East
  1902. 1:18:01Germany to speak before a company and I
1903. 1:18:04met all these Lebanese refugees after
1904. 1:18:06meeting Navy SEALs the dudes on the
1905. 1:18:09plane loved me man I built them up for
1906. 1:18:12being part of her military system I made
1907. 1:18:14them really respect and honor themselves
1908. 1:18:17then I was on the streets at Berlin
1909. 1:18:19hanging out with these Lebanese refugees
1910. 1:18:21and I made them feel so good about the
1911. 1:18:24fact that they still believed in each
1912. 1:18:25other so I have some magical ability to
1913. 1:18:29go around and touch different groups and
1914. 1:18:31and my message resonates with people
1915. 1:18:34who've been in the military or been
1916. 1:18:35through trauma or not been through
  1917. 1:18:37trauma and I have a gift I know it and
1918. 1:18:40I've spoken in some of the most
1919. 1:18:42prestigious places and one of them is
1920. 1:18:44still to this day one of the highest
  1921. 1:18:46honors I spoke at Saint John's Church in
1922. 1:18:49London where a ticket on the Vietnamese
1923. 1:18:51monk who marched with Martin Luther King
1924. 1:18:55in Selma Alabama spoke and he used to be
1925. 1:18:58my pen pal on death row he was the first
1926. 1:19:01man that gave me respect when I was on
  1927. 1:19:03death row and he questioned why I didn't
  1928. 1:19:05have respect a lot like you're doing for
  1929. 1:19:07me today
1930. 1:19:08and he taught me to look at myself
  1931. 1:19:10differently so I went through a whole
1932. 1:19:13one-year period of my experiences before
1933. 1:19:16I could speak at that church and when I
  1934. 1:19:18did I was absolutely flawless because I
1935. 1:19:21knew it my friend was there and he was
1936. 1:19:23guiding me and somewhere within me I
  1937. 1:19:26have some magical ability I don't know
  1938. 1:19:28where
1939. 1:19:28comes from but I have an orator skill
  1940. 1:19:32and once I'm past these dark days I'm
1941. 1:19:35sure I can lay it down well so that I
  1942. 1:19:37can carry a message beautifully to
1943. 1:19:39educational fields purposefully into the
1944. 1:19:43corporate fields or wherever I want to
  1945. 1:19:45go and I love it that I do have a
1946. 1:19:48winning hand and I have a gift behind it
  1947. 1:19:50that was earned
1948. 1:19:51now you can taught yourself how to do
1949. 1:19:53this I mean think about what you were
1950. 1:19:54saying earlier about learning how to
1951. 1:19:56speak so that you could speak at your
  1952. 1:19:57own execution that's why it's a powerful
  1953. 1:20:00motivating force yes sir
1954. 1:20:02and to learn all of the world's
1955. 1:20:04religions so that you understood what it
1956. 1:20:06means to speak do you know in the
1957. 1:20:09Sanskrit religion a lot of the words are
1958. 1:20:11used as descriptive forms of things so
1959. 1:20:13chairs and the object it's the feeling
1960. 1:20:16of sitting so you have a responsibility
1961. 1:20:19and not only in the words that you
1962. 1:20:21choose to speak but in the manner that
1963. 1:20:23you deliver them and the vibrations
1964. 1:20:26within you that you caringly share with
  1965. 1:20:28another person because there is a
1966. 1:20:31receptor within us all to the truth and
1967. 1:20:34it resonates and it rises within us and
1968. 1:20:37so I found that powerful ability to talk
1969. 1:20:40to myself in that manner so that I could
1970. 1:20:43love myself and I would stand in the
1971. 1:20:46window of my cell and talk to myself or
1972. 1:20:50quote beautiful text and I loved reading
1973. 1:20:53the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran I read it
  1974. 1:20:55over 20 times because I thought his
1975. 1:20:58message was so powerful because he lost
1976. 1:21:00his entire family while he wrote this
  1977. 1:21:02book over a three-year journey and
1978. 1:21:04although I might have come back from the
1979. 1:21:06ashes like peachy carnahan and the man
1980. 1:21:09who beat would be king from Roger
  1981. 1:21:11Kipling I still feel like I have a valid
1982. 1:21:16message motivating me to go forward and
1983. 1:21:18my idea from this morning on is I want
1984. 1:21:22to go home to Laura and the kids and
  1985. 1:21:24regroup get myself together and I know a
1986. 1:21:27lot of people are going to contact me
1987. 1:21:29because of your grace to having me on
1988. 1:21:30your show and what I plan to do over the
1989. 1:21:34next couple years Joe is I want to show
  1990. 1:21:38myself not just use
  1991. 1:21:40that I'm right being a kind man being a
  1992. 1:21:44good-hearted man being meticulously
  1993. 1:21:47polite doesn't mean you're a loser
  1994. 1:21:49doesn't mean you're a fool and if people
1995. 1:21:51take advantage of you it's down to you
  1996. 1:21:53to take as insult or rise the [ __ ] up
1997. 1:21:56about the insult and just move past it
  1998. 1:21:58the reason I'm not bitter is because I
1999. 1:22:02didn't take it personal when they broke
2000. 1:22:03my teeth and put me in death row and
  2001. 1:22:05tortured me I didn't take it personal
2002. 1:22:08because right now there are two million
  2003. 1:22:11people incarcerated in this country I
  2004. 1:22:13didn't take it personal because 150
2005. 1:22:16other men got off of death row that's
  2006. 1:22:20why I'm able to function because I don't
2007. 1:22:21take life personally but I take love
2008. 1:22:24personally I take it so personally that
2009. 1:22:26I'm willing love myself a lot of people
2010. 1:22:28can't do that do you know how hard it is
2011. 1:22:31to get a woman to look at herself
  2012. 1:22:32without looking at a fall they can't
  2013. 1:22:34stand it
2014. 1:22:35do you how hard it is to get a man to be
2015. 1:22:37honest with his emotions thinking that
2016. 1:22:39he's weak if he does I would rather have
2017. 1:22:42tears on my face walking down the street
2018. 1:22:44in frustration than just rip on somebody
2019. 1:22:47and hurt somebody that's the kind of
2020. 1:22:49caliber of level of humanity I want to
2021. 1:22:52find him myself and I think we all do I
2022. 1:22:54think the message like you said has been
2023. 1:22:56distorted by the social media so badly
2024. 1:22:59that we need more talking and I would
  2025. 1:23:02have a dream of having a late-night talk
2026. 1:23:04show and play some of my coolest music
2027. 1:23:07and talk to people just average people
2028. 1:23:09and just open it up like I want to just
2029. 1:23:13share what's good about me because my
2030. 1:23:15mother was right wouldn't have just been
2031. 1:23:18a terrible waste of time if I got out of
  2032. 1:23:20jail and I was just another [ __ ] on
2033. 1:23:22the street they would you know one of
2034. 1:23:25the things that keeps coming up is your
2035. 1:23:28longing for community and this is
  2036. 1:23:32something I've been thinking about a lot
2037. 1:23:33lately because I think one of the things
2038. 1:23:35that people are constantly searching for
2039. 1:23:37in this world is happiness right so one
2040. 1:23:41thing that people don't have that they
2041. 1:23:43wish they had that comes up over and
  2042. 1:23:45over again it's a reoccurring theme and
2043. 1:23:48one of the things that's also a big part
2044. 1:23:52of this life that we are
2045. 1:23:53living right now is this very recent
2046. 1:23:56disconnect between our neighbors our
2047. 1:24:01friends by commuting to work and being
2048. 1:24:05stuck in this stuffy environment where
2049. 1:24:08you can express yourself normally and
2050. 1:24:10this is the majority of your life the
2051. 1:24:12majority your time and then we wonder
  2052. 1:24:14why we're sad and we don't spend enough
  2053. 1:24:16time together with friends here's here's
  2054. 1:24:18when you aren't sad when you're having
  2055. 1:24:21fun with your friends because that's
2056. 1:24:23what human beings are meant to do
  2057. 1:24:25there's they're meant to work together
2058. 1:24:27to do something together like something
2059. 1:24:29meaningful core of your healing its met
2060. 1:24:31were meant to have community we're meant
2061. 1:24:33to have friends and we're meant to laugh
  2062. 1:24:34we're meant to share experiences we're
2063. 1:24:37meant to care for each other and when
2064. 1:24:39that's not happening in your life you
  2065. 1:24:42feel like [ __ ] what you're doing is
2066. 1:24:44spreading the fingers of your community
2067. 1:24:47you're spreading the branches of your
2068. 1:24:48community by by expressing yourself in
2069. 1:24:51helping other people by expressing
2070. 1:24:52yourself in inspiring other people by
2071. 1:24:54sending your message out there this is a
2072. 1:24:57type of community for people that are
  2073. 1:24:59longing for community you're connecting
2074. 1:25:01with people people that are longing to
2075. 1:25:03feel a connection and this is something
  2076. 1:25:06that's missing this is something that's
2077. 1:25:08greatly missing in our society and you
2078. 1:25:11you understand it more than most because
2079. 1:25:16your time that they forced you to be
2080. 1:25:20separate from community that they did
2081. 1:25:22they gave you the opposite of community
2082. 1:25:24if you communicated they beat you up
2083. 1:25:25they gave you the opposite of the
2084. 1:25:27community they locked you in a cage
2085. 1:25:28didn't let you mingle with other people
2086. 1:25:30and then the people that were around you
2087. 1:25:32you didn't want to mingle with them
2088. 1:25:34horrific people that are just the worst
  2089. 1:25:37examples of a life gone wrong and you're
  2090. 1:25:40surrounded with him he's still emerged
2091. 1:25:42and that just out alone gives people
2092. 1:25:45hope and that hope is something that
  2093. 1:25:46everybody needs I was a good person on
2094. 1:25:48death row to the point that a man named
2095. 1:25:51Tom Lowenstein wanted to write a book
  2096. 1:25:52about me
2097. 1:25:53and I turned him on to Walter Oh Grod
2098. 1:25:56who still sit on death row and I asked
2099. 1:25:58him to write the book about Walter
2100. 1:26:00and then CNN death row stories wanted to
2101. 1:26:02contact me and have Susan's friend and
2102. 1:26:04narrate my story two and a half
2103. 1:26:06years ago I told him again Walters still
2104. 1:26:09on death row man do it for him I what's
2105. 1:26:12Walter Store the Walter Walter Oh Grod
2106. 1:26:15was convicted of killing a little girl
2107. 1:26:17and put her in a TV box but he didn't do
2108. 1:26:19it and he had the misfortune of having
2109. 1:26:22his brother attacked in his house and
2110. 1:26:24nearly murdered and being brought in for
2111. 1:26:26that investigation and then simply asked
  2112. 1:26:28by a detective hey there's a girl killed
2113. 1:26:30on your street did you know anything
2114. 1:26:31about it he goes yeah I know about it
2115. 1:26:34next thing you know he's facing death
2116. 1:26:37row so a jury finds him not guilty but
2117. 1:26:39for the sabotage of one juror he ends up
  2118. 1:26:42on death row
  2119. 1:26:43well they said sabotage you're wondering
2120. 1:26:45he voted not guilty and then he drops
2121. 1:26:47out during the vault dear I lied I lied
  2122. 1:26:48he's guilty
2123. 1:26:49so they declare a mistrial get the guy
2124. 1:26:52they called a Monsignor to come in and
2125. 1:26:53say that now he confessed to him they
  2126. 1:26:56have a second trial
2127. 1:26:57so they put Walter on death row and I
  2128. 1:26:59meet him and everybody's abusing the
  2129. 1:27:01[ __ ] out of him so I did the unnatural
2130. 1:27:06thing I stood up for him for all the
2131. 1:27:09bullies and I told the two men that were
2132. 1:27:11abusing him if they put their hands on
2133. 1:27:12him again I was going to get involved
2134. 1:27:14and I started helping Walter with his
2135. 1:27:16lawyers and ever since I got out of
2136. 1:27:18prison I kept my word to stick by him
2137. 1:27:20and fight for him so I gave up
2138. 1:27:22opportunities could have changed my life
2139. 1:27:24and now death row stories is back and
2140. 1:27:27they're gonna do my story and Walters
2141. 1:27:29still on death row right now yeah and
2142. 1:27:30he's innocent and what can be done to
2143. 1:27:32help Walter contact Tom wolf and ask him
2144. 1:27:34why the innocence projects and the
2145. 1:27:37integrity unions won't take up his case
2146. 1:27:40there's no evidence and it was clearly I
2147. 1:27:43mean when you see the show on death row
2148. 1:27:45story it's just laid out so clear I was
  2149. 1:27:48a little disappointed they didn't
2150. 1:27:49mention me that I turned him on to
2151. 1:27:51Walter my selfless act was overlooked
2152. 1:27:53but that was just my ego but I always am
  2153. 1:27:56like that and that's what I love I know
2154. 1:27:59that they were despicable Joe and the
2155. 1:28:01axe that a lot of men did were
2156. 1:28:03despicable but if I let that stop me
2157. 1:28:06from loving any of them then I was going
2158. 1:28:08to be nothing so yeah a lot of them were
2159. 1:28:11really messed up man but the ones that
2160. 1:28:13needed it I set aside everything and
2161. 1:28:16still cared about men so it's a spell on
  2162. 1:28:18Walters name
2163. 1:28:19G ro D Oh crud Walter Oh Grod was
  2164. 1:28:24convicted of putting a little girl in a
2165. 1:28:26box and Philadelphia we need to get Kim
  2166. 1:28:28Kardashian on the case
2167. 1:28:29yeah man cuz this is she's getting
  2168. 1:28:32people released from pre-kindergarten
2169. 1:28:35it's Walter this man has suffered
2170. 1:28:38enormous ly prison is he in he's in
2171. 1:28:41Greene County Supermax and in pencil
2172. 1:28:43pencil vein I fought for my other friend
2173. 1:28:46Walt Ernie Simmons he got out the trials
  2174. 1:28:50of Walter Oh Grod
  2175. 1:28:51yeah the shocking murder so-called
2176. 1:28:53confessions in notorious snitch to sent
2177. 1:28:55a man to death row tom Lowenstein came
2178. 1:28:57to me while I was still on death row in
2179. 1:28:592002 and he said Nick my god your story
2180. 1:29:03I want to write a book about you
  2181. 1:29:04and I said yeah that's brilliant but how
2182. 1:29:07about the guy sitting next to me it
2183. 1:29:08doesn't have lawyers or DNA or anybody
2184. 1:29:10to help him how about helping him
2185. 1:29:12because are you crazy you're giving up
  2186. 1:29:14an opportunity I said dude it ain't like
2187. 1:29:17that I love this man he has no lawyers
  2188. 1:29:20like I do so that's the parrot that's
  2189. 1:29:23who I am so I didn't take credit for it
2190. 1:29:27but I really did try to help another man
  2191. 1:29:29because I felt like I would be so
2192. 1:29:31disappointing if I just took and took
2193. 1:29:33and took for myself and you know I'm
  2194. 1:29:36actually grateful I didn't go on your
  2195. 1:29:38podcast two years ago I was a homeless
  2196. 1:29:41person without a family and now I got
2197. 1:29:44the two amazing girls Zara and Bethany
2198. 1:29:47and my wife Laura these two English
2199. 1:29:50girls get the dream life change they get
2200. 1:29:53to move from Somerset England out here
2201. 1:29:54to organ and my little girl gets on a
2202. 1:29:57yellow school bus Joe she goes to bus
2203. 1:29:59every day she's in school they they like
2204. 1:30:03I'm in the community I got all these
2205. 1:30:04wonderful friends up in Oregon like
2206. 1:30:06Donny Hobbs and these guys that are my
  2207. 1:30:08personal friends now I built my
2208. 1:30:10community again like I got all these
2209. 1:30:12cool people up there that love me I got
2210. 1:30:15my wife's right now in Salem with her
  2211. 1:30:16friend Carly and they're opening up a
2212. 1:30:18new shop up there and all this stuff so
2213. 1:30:21I I really did it despite not having
  2214. 1:30:24anything I did exactly what you said I
2215. 1:30:26went and overcame the deprivation and
2216. 1:30:29found community and built my tribe
2217. 1:30:32I know a lot of people struggle to have
2218. 1:30:35people in their life that aren't causing
2219. 1:30:36conflict it's you is allowing it man go
2220. 1:30:39out and find new people to be around
2221. 1:30:41because a lot of people want you if
  2222. 1:30:42you're a nice person it's just hard for
2223. 1:30:44people to find those people sometimes
2224. 1:30:46and that's where they lose hope you know
2225. 1:30:48people they don't and one of the things
2226. 1:30:51they don't know where to get started
2227. 1:30:52right they don't know how to how to get
2228. 1:30:55their life going how to get moving how
2229. 1:30:57to feel good how to get success there's
2230. 1:31:00so many different things and to those
2231. 1:31:02people I say just do something the more
2232. 1:31:05things you do the more things you can do
  2233. 1:31:07do something do anything whether it's
2234. 1:31:09commit to walking around the block ten
  2235. 1:31:11times a night with whatever whether it's
2236. 1:31:14committing to writing your your life
2237. 1:31:17story and you know it stops a lot of
2238. 1:31:19people as their self imagery right
  2239. 1:31:20mm-hmm
2240. 1:31:21I I was convicted of a rape and murder
  2241. 1:31:25and in everyone's eyes I was a
  2242. 1:31:27psychologically deranged person I had to
2243. 1:31:30live with that stigma every day right
  2244. 1:31:32then when I got out everybody thought I
  2245. 1:31:34must be crazy as [ __ ] because I spent
2246. 1:31:36eight thousand and fifty seven days in
2247. 1:31:38solitary confinement being tortured so
2248. 1:31:40there's no way I could be saying right
2249. 1:31:44their perspective had no effect on me
2250. 1:31:48because by that time I had given myself
2251. 1:31:50enough education to know the difference
2252. 1:31:53between what was done to me
2253. 1:31:55and who I am and this is the problem
2254. 1:31:57with a lot of people they fail to stop
2255. 1:32:00doing this thing where I am this or I am
2256. 1:32:03that and this is the problem so I really
2257. 1:32:08have never cared about the perspective
2258. 1:32:11of anyone in the negative except for
2259. 1:32:15when they got it wrong from my intent to
2260. 1:32:18do good with them and then it just
2261. 1:32:20became about all my own ego so I
2262. 1:32:22realized that the truth is as long as I
  2263. 1:32:25know I'm doing right and I'm doing good
2264. 1:32:27it isn't going to matter about their
2265. 1:32:29perspective because the same person who
  2266. 1:32:30thought I was a rapist scumbag murderer
2267. 1:32:32now thinks I'm one of the most eloquent
2268. 1:32:34speakers they met in her life their
2269. 1:32:36perspective about me changed but mine
  2270. 1:32:38surely shouldn't but it did and that's
2271. 1:32:41where a lot of people suffer from they
2272. 1:32:43let that negative comment make them feel
  2273. 1:32:45like they have to
2274. 1:32:46overcome it or have to live with it and
2275. 1:32:48I'll tell you what Joe I really never
2276. 1:32:50expected this but for the first time in
2277. 1:32:52my life from conducting the interview
  2278. 1:32:54throughout the whole process I've been
  2279. 1:32:56re-evaluating Who I am and what I'm
  2280. 1:32:58saying
  2281. 1:32:58it's like a [ __ ] slap in the face man
2282. 1:33:01like I came in here but draggled with my
2283. 1:33:04emotions carrying him on my sleeves and
  2284. 1:33:06all the stress I haven't slept well for
  2285. 1:33:08days I haven't taken care of my so
  2286. 1:33:09that's [ __ ]
2287. 1:33:10I didn't do well in articulating and you
  2288. 1:33:15gave me a wake-up call that I've never
2289. 1:33:17had before in any experience you can go
2290. 1:33:19back and look through the history of the
2291. 1:33:21many experiences of a head of interviews
  2292. 1:33:23and I've done some outstanding ones I've
  2293. 1:33:26never had a personal experience where
2294. 1:33:28throughout the course of speaking to
  2295. 1:33:30another man I started to reevaluate
  2296. 1:33:31everything I held firmly to and I
  2297. 1:33:35promise you I'm gonna go and think a
  2298. 1:33:37whole lot about this and get my [ __ ]
2299. 1:33:39together because I do owe it to a lot of
  2300. 1:33:40people to be one badass [ __ ]
  2301. 1:33:42what a hell of a message you're to
2302. 1:33:44yourself damn straight man I'm gonna do
2303. 1:33:48that I really am man so if you want me
2304. 1:33:51to come and speak before your corporate
2305. 1:33:53functions or a high school or university
2306. 1:33:55I'd do that better than anyone
2307. 1:33:58in fact I'm fine one of the finest
2308. 1:34:00speakers on the planet and I learned it
  2309. 1:34:02because I watched Bruce Springsteen you
2310. 1:34:05remember that speech he gave at the
  2311. 1:34:06Oscars for Philadelphia no I never
2312. 1:34:09watched the Oscars to get that up oh my
2313. 1:34:11god Bruce Springsteen is one of the
2314. 1:34:13finest speakers for you - yeah yeah no
2315. 1:34:16but just an image but dude gave one of
2316. 1:34:18the most profound speeches I'd waste the
2317. 1:34:23Ferger he made the nexus point between
2318. 1:34:25music and imagery so poignant that I was
  2319. 1:34:29blown away by it
2320. 1:34:31so much so that when we made the
  2321. 1:34:33documentary fear of 13 that's all I'd
2322. 1:34:36kept imagining when I spoke was the
2323. 1:34:38imagery we would be lended and I loved
2324. 1:34:41the fact that I worked very hard to
2325. 1:34:44bring the whole audience into my cell
2326. 1:34:47one time to spend with me my story in a
2327. 1:34:51way that no one ever did before I
  2328. 1:34:53[ __ ] rocked it that's awesome
  2329. 1:34:56yeah I like that I like the fact that I
  2330. 1:34:59know I have talent in that field I don't
2331. 1:35:01want to boast but I have a gift and it
2332. 1:35:04came light years ahead of me when I
  2333. 1:35:06watched I had 400 students in Ealing
2334. 1:35:11enraptured at a conference my friend an
2335. 1:35:15educator named Edmund Dobson set this
2336. 1:35:16whole thing up go there you could hear a
2337. 1:35:20pin drop because all along somewhere
2338. 1:35:25along the way an energy clicks in and I
2339. 1:35:29can hold the room in palm of my hand
2340. 1:35:31I've had some amazing experiences with
2341. 1:35:34it I don't know how to say it but that
2342. 1:35:40cult of personality lore of being on the
2343. 1:35:43stage and talking to people is powerful
2344. 1:35:46man and I can see why Tony Robbins and
2345. 1:35:49everybody gets up in no Nate do that I'm
  2346. 1:35:51not a life coach I can't coach no one's
2347. 1:35:53life but I can tell you about your life
2348. 1:35:56in many ways that would make you really
2349. 1:36:00invigorated to want to make a better
2350. 1:36:02life for yourself but no one could truly
2351. 1:36:04be your life coach you got to do that
  2352. 1:36:06[ __ ] yourself and I love it I love it
  2353. 1:36:09that I understood those moments because
2354. 1:36:11one of the coolest things was I used to
2355. 1:36:14go to the Globe Theater anybody that
  2356. 1:36:17understands Shakespeare understands the
2357. 1:36:19Globe Theatre is the center of the world
2358. 1:36:21for Shakespeare they would perform Titus
2359. 1:36:24Andronicus and then after which
2360. 1:36:26Cleopatra would come out on stage and
2361. 1:36:30introduce me to the Caryl now I had
2362. 1:36:32eight minutes ten minutes tops to do
2363. 1:36:35this thing and in eight to ten minutes I
2364. 1:36:38had a crowd who had been standing for
2365. 1:36:40three hours long play crying put money
2366. 1:36:43in a bucket for what I said to them and
2367. 1:36:45did it flawlessly every time and I did
2368. 1:36:48it for a whole summer in London it was
2369. 1:36:50the most amazing experience to stand
2370. 1:36:52there and look out over this Vista of
2371. 1:36:55London after you did this amazing thing
2372. 1:36:57where people never expected you and you
2373. 1:37:00are nothing to do with the theater you
2374. 1:37:02are just a human rights charity chosen
2375. 1:37:04by the theatre to come out and speak and
2376. 1:37:06I realized at that moment I had
2377. 1:37:09if I could get people who had been
2378. 1:37:11standing for three hours watching a play
2379. 1:37:13to have wet tears in her eyes putting
2380. 1:37:15money shoving it into a bucket for me
  2381. 1:37:17then I knew I had some ability to
2382. 1:37:20finally speak I was no longer in aphasia
2383. 1:37:24affected destroyed distorted mind addled
2384. 1:37:28by drugs and used beyond belief to
2385. 1:37:30distortions of like I was so screwed up
2386. 1:37:34to come back to do that I knew I was do
2387. 1:37:38you know I wrote this whole book in only
  2388. 1:37:39three days
2389. 1:37:40200 and I have a gift Joe like seriously
  2390. 1:37:43like I wrote and I have witnesses I
2391. 1:37:46wrote the whole book in two and a half
2392. 1:37:48days man because it was in me this story
2393. 1:37:53monsters madman was so powerful that
  2394. 1:37:56when I met Laura my wife I told her I
2395. 1:37:58said you know what I'm gonna finally do
2396. 1:38:00it man I'm gonna get this out and it it
2397. 1:38:03just came out for two and a half days I
2398. 1:38:06barely slept eight did anything all I
2399. 1:38:09did was make love to my wife on a break
2400. 1:38:11or right and I mean poured it out and I
2401. 1:38:14poured out the whole book and I've
2402. 1:38:16realized that was needed to move on and
  2403. 1:38:18it's what it's the best book I ever
2404. 1:38:21wrote my life and I'm so proud that it's
2405. 1:38:24my last one cuz I don't have to worry
2406. 1:38:25about no more stories I did the thing
2407. 1:38:27that was great all right so this one
2408. 1:38:29changed this is really fear of 13 my
2409. 1:38:32countdown to execution it went through
2410. 1:38:34hell it got cancelled it's now a fear of
  2411. 1:38:3713 then I wrote the kindness approach I
2412. 1:38:39did one called my journey through her
  2413. 1:38:41eyes I didn't bring a copy and you wait
2414. 1:38:44a minute do you not want to write like
2415. 1:38:46why why do you say that ah because uh
2416. 1:38:48because I crafted my series of books
2417. 1:38:51that create and captivate my whole
2418. 1:38:53entire message right and I want to leave
2419. 1:38:56it pure I don't want to then go on and
2420. 1:38:59make up falsifications of things that
2421. 1:39:03didn't happen so all these are
2422. 1:39:05nonfiction all these are nonfiction all
2423. 1:39:07these events are true and poignant sin
  2424. 1:39:09my life and I think that's the best
2425. 1:39:11thing to do stay true to who I am I was
2426. 1:39:13going to tell one story called that's
2427. 1:39:15enough for me as a fictionalized writer
2428. 1:39:18just to show everybody my talent because
2429. 1:39:21people in the past has said
2430. 1:39:22while you can write anything so I was
2431. 1:39:24going to do that but I've held back
  2432. 1:39:26because I thought I want to leave a cool
2433. 1:39:28I want to leave it like this is my
2434. 1:39:30series of work my work is I wrote to
2435. 1:39:33prison books and I wrote two books that
2436. 1:39:36will guide people in life how not to be
2437. 1:39:39screwed up or bitter and I want to leave
2438. 1:39:42that as my message I want to go into
2439. 1:39:44other things but those are my books and
2440. 1:39:46I'm proud of the work I did I got it out
  2441. 1:39:48of my system I'm a published author
2442. 1:39:50I can go down in history as that right
  2443. 1:39:52I'm cool with that I don't really want
2444. 1:39:55to then push it and think that I can
2445. 1:39:57then lure people into reading more works
  2446. 1:39:59that I can try because that's not really
  2447. 1:40:01fair to them didn't I mean I want to
2448. 1:40:04keep it that way I think that's one of
2449. 1:40:06the things I want to try and stay true
2450. 1:40:07to now speaking that's my love no Nick
2451. 1:40:12if someone wanted to hire you to speak
2452. 1:40:14where would they go Nick Harris org so
2453. 1:40:17it's really simple everyone on the
2454. 1:40:19podcast can easily find me on the other
2455. 1:40:21social medias but I have like I said my
2456. 1:40:24really close friends Adam Callahan and
  2457. 1:40:26his wife just had a baby so they're
2458. 1:40:28running my website Nick Harris org and a
2459. 1:40:31lot of people can reach me for functions
2460. 1:40:33like that but I really love the fact
2461. 1:40:35that I have a chance also with this my
2462. 1:40:37verse com to go ahead and go into
  2463. 1:40:40schools and there's a really cool thing
2464. 1:40:42you know this X generation times three
2465. 1:40:44men they're like so computer savvy right
2466. 1:40:47so much so did you actually are starting
  2467. 1:40:50a trend there's no longer 15 minutes of
  2468. 1:40:53fame there's the five-second video clip
  2469. 1:40:55of Fame now and it's been reduced it's
  2470. 1:40:59just like everything's five seconds you
  2471. 1:41:00know I mean it's no longer so everything
2472. 1:41:02in the education field is coming hours
2473. 1:41:04or faster and faster so we need to use
2474. 1:41:06the analytics of something like my verse
2475. 1:41:08to go ahead and get a child to figure
2476. 1:41:09out who they can go and be in their
2477. 1:41:12careers and then follow that correct
2478. 1:41:14path you can't just throw it against the
2479. 1:41:16wall anymore Joe you have to really work
2480. 1:41:18hard to get children to feel good about
  2481. 1:41:20being a taxi driver a painter you know
2482. 1:41:24it's not no shame to be a person who
2483. 1:41:27goes out and does a simple manual job if
2484. 1:41:29that makes you happy as a human being
2485. 1:41:32you should be able to do that without
  2486. 1:41:33the stigma right
2487. 1:41:34but the school's not going to tell you
2488. 1:41:36that you know they're gonna tell you
2489. 1:41:39could be anything but why wouldn't you
2490. 1:41:41want to find out what would make you
2491. 1:41:43happy in life and be that right that
  2492. 1:41:46makes sense to me
2493. 1:41:47so I'm not gonna learn that from school
2494. 1:41:49now learn that from people yeah enough
2495. 1:41:51from people and you learn that from from
2496. 1:41:53online more than anything today and
2497. 1:41:55that's why I want to be involved in the
  2498. 1:41:57educational field I think that's my
2499. 1:41:59greatest gift is someone who went to
  2500. 1:42:00prison who hadn't ever read a book who
2501. 1:42:04accomplished the things that he did then
2502. 1:42:06can share how the purpose of my
2503. 1:42:08education was so that I was able to
2504. 1:42:11process life enough to handle it
2505. 1:42:13to give myself enough separation to
2506. 1:42:15realize who I was as a human being is
2507. 1:42:17not the sum total of my misery and that
2508. 1:42:20I could then help others structure their
2509. 1:42:23lives through politeness to go and get a
2510. 1:42:25good education and I love that fact that
2511. 1:42:28I worked so hard through all these
2512. 1:42:30different things to not lose that
2513. 1:42:33message man and it really does work for
2514. 1:42:36a lot of young people they find that
2515. 1:42:37their self restrict respect really does
2516. 1:42:40grow when someone gives them just a
  2517. 1:42:43small little bit of a break man they're
  2518. 1:42:47so honest I love I love it I'll never
2519. 1:42:49tire of it in that one regards I've
2520. 1:42:51touched so many young people's lives men
  2521. 1:42:53that's beautiful Nick that's a great
2522. 1:42:55message and thanks for being here man I
2523. 1:42:58really appreciate this yeah me too I
2524. 1:43:01really do can I give a quick shot all
2525. 1:43:02right so I got some good friends of mine
2526. 1:43:05I I really messed up on Alex Ortiz and I
2527. 1:43:08like these young dudes these fighters
2528. 1:43:10joke they're all mad about you and it I
2529. 1:43:12like it what do you think about the
2530. 1:43:14Bellator anyway love it yeah yeah I
2531. 1:43:18think doing a great job yeah Jesse
  2532. 1:43:20Kasich asked he's gonna fight this
  2533. 1:43:22[ __ ] and I like the fact that
2534. 1:43:24his father teaches that kun towel with
2535. 1:43:26that prison style of martial arts well
  2536. 1:43:30it's the old style it's like it isn't
2537. 1:43:33like the martial arts that most people
2538. 1:43:36would know because it's derived from the
  2539. 1:43:39Filipino prison systems it's like really
2540. 1:43:41pure styles of quick attacks and stuff
2541. 1:43:44like that so it's nothing to boxing but
2542. 1:43:45no III like it that like dudes like Mike
2543. 1:43:48born all these guys been really
2544. 1:43:49supportive to me and everyone like I
