5. 0:08the hard way this weekend he traveled 3
6. 0:11000 miles and endured numerous no-swaps
7. 0:14to be here with us in studio
8. 0:15all the way from provincetown

12. 0:21gentlemen thank you for coming here we
13. 0:24really appreciate it
14. 0:28what a strange what a i guess
15. 0:31my first question should be had you been
16. 0:33swallowed by a whale before
17. 0:35or was this your first thank god no no
18. 0:38you had not this is your first time
19. 0:40we built this for you um i heard you
20. 0:43freaked out a little when you saw it
21. 0:45i did yeah and and i was like i thought
22. 0:48about it and i was like
23. 0:50no way am i getting in that
24. 0:55i'm going back to cape cod
25. 1:00i thought about it harder and i said you
26. 1:02know what it's the perfect celebration
27. 1:04of life
28. 1:06i survived you sure did
29. 1:09you survived and this is not the first
30. 1:11time my two boys my two boys are home
31. 1:13watching this how old are they
32. 1:15they're 12 and 16. what are their names
33. 1:17jacob and josiah did they believe you oh
34. 1:19did you name josiah after josiah
35. 1:22yes i did how about that wow you guys
36. 1:24are tired
37. 1:25all right so just to set the stage first
38. 1:28of all this is not your
39. 1:29first near-death experience you were on
40. 1:31a plane crash
41. 1:32with fatalities you uh have been face to
42. 1:35face with great white sharks
43. 1:37you discovered a body in the ocean
44. 1:40you've been through a lot of stuff
45. 1:41i have you might be bad luck actually
46. 1:43josiah you might want to be careful
47. 1:45and then last week you were swallowed by
48. 1:48a whale i wasn't swallowed jimmy i was
49. 1:51in his mouth
50. 1:53well let's get that straight i got a
51. 1:55show to do and i'm going with swallow
52. 1:59you're in his mouth okay you weren't
53. 2:01swallowed interesting all right i guess
54. 2:03there is a difference
55. 2:04yeah because if you were swallowed you
56. 2:05would have come out the other end huh
57. 2:08all right so all right so you guys are
58. 2:11out on the boat
59. 2:12you're you're fishing for lobster you're
60. 2:14diving for lobster
61. 2:15and you do it like the old-fashioned way
62. 2:18correct
63. 2:19yeah you dive down there you grab them
64. 2:21with your hands
65. 2:22yeah and then josiah you tell us what
66. 2:24you witnessed well we'd uh done a couple
67. 2:27of dives and uh
68. 2:28we caught a couple hundred pounds of
69. 2:30lobster or something like that and
70. 2:31um he went down for a third dive
71. 2:34everything was normal and he kind of
72. 2:36drifted away his bubbles went away from
73. 2:38the boat
74. 2:39and uh then i just saw a huge boil
75. 2:42splashing slashing
76. 2:43all over the water and i thought oh man
77. 2:46this is it this is that
78. 2:47shark attack that we're always you know
79. 2:50worried about
80. 2:51and um then i saw whale parts i saw
81. 2:54you know whale fluke and the whale's
82. 2:56head and i
83. 2:57suddenly knew it wasn't a shark attack
84. 2:59but still something crazy was happening
85. 3:01then michael shot out of the water i
86. 3:02could see his little legs kind of
87. 3:05flying out of the water in the just out
88. 3:07of a boil an eruption of white water
89. 3:09and um and then you come up and use i
90. 3:12mean i guess well first of all what
91. 3:14were you experiencing while you were
92. 3:15under the water well when it first
93. 3:17happened i like
94. 3:18like josiah said i was descending i
95. 3:20almost got to the bottom
96. 3:22i was at about 35 feet and
97. 3:25i just got hit by a freight truck just
98. 3:28this bang and then everything just went
99. 3:32instantly dark and i'm just moving
100. 3:36traveling fast through the water and i'm
101. 3:38like what's that
102. 3:39heck did i just get get eaten by a shark
103. 3:43and i was like no shark smiles aren't
104. 3:45that big
105. 3:46and i don't feel any teeth
106. 3:50oh great i didn't get eaten by a shark
107. 3:52[Laughter]
108. 3:55and i mean what bottom in a whale's
109. 3:59mouth
110. 4:00what the hell do i do you knew you're
111. 4:02aware while you're in there that you're
112. 4:03inside the wheel absolutely
113. 4:04and when you said you could feel
114. 4:06yourself moving through the water
115. 4:08quickly so you could actually it was
116. 4:09almost like being in a submarine or
117. 4:11something
118. 4:11where you were feeling that motion yeah
119. 4:13a submarine or a car
120. 4:15or a motorcycle but with water just
121. 4:18rushing
122. 4:19do you begin to struggle and uh and let
123. 4:22the whale know that you were in there i
124. 4:24was struggling
125. 4:25and banging and kicking and
126. 4:28and just thinking there's no way i'm
127. 4:30going to get out of this unless he
128. 4:32decides to let me go
129. 4:33yeah and i'm dead wow i'm going to get
130. 4:37all of those thoughts how long were you
131. 4:38in there
132. 4:39i would say approximately 30 to 40
133. 4:41seconds i'm sure you've heard from a lot
134. 4:43of people have you heard of this
135. 4:44ever happening to anyone before
136. 4:47besides the bible just since this
137. 4:49happened i just saw
138. 4:51a cameraman in south africa wow oh i'd
139. 4:54love for you to meet him wouldn't that
140. 4:55be fun
141. 4:56you guys should have a club and so then
142. 4:58you call
143. 4:599-1-1 yeah we got him back on the boat
144. 5:02and we
145. 5:02we a friend of ours helped me lift him
146. 5:04back on the boat and we just
147. 5:06first communicated with him you know i
148. 5:08pulled the boat up to him and
149. 5:09said you know what's going on you're
150. 5:11okay okay
151. 5:13i said his leg was broke and he thought
152. 5:14his leg was broken he pulled him on the
153. 5:16boat
154. 5:16and then um the first thing i said was i
155. 5:19was in the
156. 5:20whale's mouth
157. 5:30and so then the
158. 5:33josiah you called michael's wife and
159. 5:35explained this
160. 5:36to her i tried not to i just tried to
161. 5:39say michael's okay i always lead with
162. 5:40michael's okay but
163. 5:42oh this has happened before well anytime
164. 5:44there's anything you know
165. 5:45and so yeah i called her and let her
166. 5:47know she had to call me back shortly
167. 5:49after to
168. 5:50verify what she just heard and i was
169. 5:53trying to downplay it you know i no one
170. 5:55would believe it with the
171. 5:56with the ambulance or with with her i
172. 5:58was just saying we had an encounter with
173. 6:00the whale
174. 6:00i didn't want to go into it did you
175. 6:02sense that the lobsters were watching
176. 6:04and felt like they were getting some
177. 6:05kind of revenge maybe they were in
178. 6:06cahoots with the whale
179. 6:09now michael you said that uh somebody
180. 6:11asked you on reddit if you
181. 6:13who would you want to play you in a
182. 6:15movie about your life and you said
183. 6:17matt damon and i just wonder why you
184. 6:19would aim so low
185. 6:21i mean and if he does play you can the
186. 6:25whale eat him can that be his
187. 6:27final destination
188. 6:30this is this is really one of the
189. 6:33craziest stories i've ever heard uh
190. 6:35you're probably going to be telling this
191. 6:37story until the day you die
192. 6:39i mean it is at first i thought well
193. 6:41there's no way that really happened
194. 6:42and then i saw you guys on the news i
195. 6:44was like oh yeah these guys don't seem
196. 6:45to be
197. 6:46lie i mean they seem like honest guys
198. 6:48well yeah that's one of the cool things
199. 6:49about
200. 6:50the story is that you know it happened
201. 6:52to someone like michael with his
202. 6:53reputation if it wasn't for some yahoo
203. 6:55then
204. 6:56all we'd be doing is arguing about
205. 6:57whether it happened or not and because
206. 6:59it's michael with his reputation as a
207. 7:00highline fisherman guys who don't
208. 7:02exaggerate about stuff ever
209. 7:04that's a great lesson for humpback
210. 7:05whales if you are to swallow someone
211. 7:08find a credible individual someone who's
212. 7:10respected in the
213. 7:11in the local community well we have a
214. 7:14few gifts for you michael
215. 7:16um we have well one thing i don't know
216. 7:17if you have free willy on dvd but that's
217. 7:19um something for you we got you and this
218. 7:22ending is going to come in handy this is
219. 7:24moby gone whale repellent
220. 7:26and um this shirt that is one of a kind
221. 7:30no one else has this kiss me i got
222. 7:31swallowed by a whale
223. 7:33and of course i don't think really we
224. 7:36could ever do this without a nod to tom
225. 7:38carvel
226. 7:39and we made you a special fudgy the
227. 7:41whale cake
228. 7:42with uh with a guy inside him so
229. 7:46he's i just want to say something yes go
230. 7:48ahead
231. 7:49i want to apologize to the whale for
232. 7:51getting in his way
233. 7:53and i won't ever do it again
234. 7:57if the whale is watching tonight you
235. 8:00yeah so yeah well thank you guys for
236. 8:03coming out here what a journey this
237. 8:05has been one other thing uh yeah you
238. 8:07know i try to make a living and if
239. 8:09anybody ever wants to buy any of my
240. 8:10lobsters i sell them to a wholesale guy
241. 8:13they're called uh well fleet shellfish
242. 8:15company why don't we get there in
243. 8:17c-stand massachusetts they can just
244. 8:19contact why don't we send
245. 8:20this big whale with you and then you
246. 8:23could pile the lobsters up in here and
247. 8:25sell them
