  28. 1:10my story
  29. 1:12uh just briefly let me tell you my story
  30. 1:14i grew up in idaho farm country
  31. 1:17my father still lives on the old
  32. 1:19homestead where i grew up southwestern
  33. 1:21idaho
  34. 1:22he'll be 91 his next birthday
  35. 1:25and i'm very proud of him
  36. 1:28i went to high school i graduated i went
  37. 1:30to college one year
  38. 1:32halfway through my second year i decided
  39. 1:34i was smart enough so i quit
  40. 1:36one of my major mistakes i should have
  41. 1:39stayed in school
  42. 1:40but i thought you know heck i'm smart
  43. 1:42enough to get a job and back then i
  44. 1:44thought you know that was it if you're
  45. 1:45smart enough to get a job what else
  46. 1:47would you need
  47. 1:48found out later
  48. 1:49a big mistake
  49. 1:51but anyway i quit school at age 19 went
  50. 1:54to work a little while later persuaded a
  51. 1:56beautiful young lady to marry me
  52. 1:59with a lot of fancy promises
  53. 2:01and fortunately for me we got married
  54. 2:04a little while later i started my family
  55. 2:07and i'm out there working hard doing the
  56. 2:09best i thought i could
  57. 2:11but year by year i kept falling a little
  58. 2:13further behind
  59. 2:14uh you know buying a little more than i
  60. 2:17could conveniently pay for on time
  61. 2:19and uh
  62. 2:21the creditors are finally starting to
  63. 2:22call saying hey you told us the check
  64. 2:24was in the mail
  65. 2:26i'm not feeling at all good about that
  66. 2:29about age 25
  67. 2:31i've got pennies in my pocket i've got
  68. 2:33nothing in the bank
  69. 2:35and way behind on my big mouth promises
  70. 2:38to my family
  71. 2:40and wondering what could i do to make my
  72. 2:42life better
  73. 2:43i was willing to work hard that was not
  74. 2:45my problem
  75. 2:46but i just wasn't making the progress i
  76. 2:49wanted to make
  77. 2:50and then good fortune came my way
  78. 2:53sometimes it's difficult to describe
  79. 2:55good fortune why something remarkable
  80. 2:57happens to you at a particular time
  81. 3:00one of my friends says well hey things
  82. 3:01don't just happen
  83. 3:03things happen just
  84. 3:05and maybe that's it i don't know but my
  85. 3:07good fortune was i had a chance to meet
  86. 3:09a very wealthy man his name was mr chef
  87. 3:12mr earl schoff
  88. 3:13a friend of mine had gone to work for
  89. 3:15him
  90. 3:16and he started telling me about this man
  91. 3:17he said you got to meet this man he's
  92. 3:19rich but he's easy to talk to
  93. 3:21and he's got a remarkable philosophy of
  94. 3:23life
  95. 3:24and he kept going on and i thought well
  96. 3:27i've got to meet this man
  97. 3:28so shortly after that i had a chance to
  98. 3:30meet this mr chef
  99. 3:32and i was impressed he was rich
  100. 3:35he was easy to talk to
  101. 3:37within a few minutes i was dazzled
  102. 3:40and i said to myself i would give
  103. 3:42anything if i could be like that
  104. 3:44rich and easy to talk to what would it
  105. 3:46take
  106. 3:47and then i thought
  107. 3:49if i could just get around somebody like
  108. 3:51him
  109. 3:52and if he would teach me and coach me
  110. 3:54i would do it all
  111. 3:56and that was my good fortune a few
  112. 3:58months later this wealthy man mr chef
  113. 4:00hired me and gave me a job
  114. 4:03and i went to work for him and i spent
  115. 4:04the next five years in his employ
  116. 4:08and then unfortunately at age 49 he died
  117. 4:11but i got to spend five years with this
  118. 4:14remarkable man his last five years of
  119. 4:16his life and the first five years of my
  120. 4:19new life
  121. 4:20and my dream came true during that
  122. 4:22five-year period
  123. 4:24this man took the time to teach me and
  124. 4:27coach me he taught me the books to read
  125. 4:29he taught me the disciplines and he
  126. 4:31taught me the skills
  127. 4:33and he taught me the changes to make in
  128. 4:35my language and personality
  129. 4:38and the things he shared with me during
  130. 4:39that five years
  131. 4:41changed my whole life changed my income
  132. 4:43changed my bank account
  133. 4:45changed my future
  134. 4:47i've never been the same
  135. 4:49by the time i was 31 years old i was a
  136. 4:51millionaire
  137. 4:52so he taught me economics as well
  138. 4:55so how lucky can you get to meet the
  139. 4:57right person at the right time
  140. 5:00who takes the time to share with you
  141. 5:01ideas that can change your life
  142. 5:04a lot of rich people right don't take
  143. 5:05the time but he did and he also had the
  144. 5:08ability
  145. 5:09some people want to share their
  146. 5:11experiences but they don't quite know
  147. 5:12how to say it but he had it all
  148. 5:14and he used language that i could
  149. 5:16understand
  150. 5:17and those ideas greatly affected my life
  151. 5:22i wish he was still alive today if he
  152. 5:24was i'd be calling him today one more
  153. 5:26time thanking him
  154. 5:28for the time he spent with me sharing
  155. 5:30his life and his experiences that so
  156. 5:32dramatically affected my life
  157. 5:35then how i really came to be invited to
  158. 5:37speak to you today
  159. 5:4030 plus years ago i was living in
  160. 5:41beverly hills california
  161. 5:44and a friend of mine one day said
  162. 5:46jim you've got to come and tell your
  163. 5:47story to my service club he belonged to
  164. 5:50the rotary club
  165. 5:51and he said i know your story idaho farm
  166. 5:53boy makes it to beverly hills
  167. 5:56but he said i know my club members would
  168. 5:57love to hear your story would you come
  169. 5:59and
  170. 6:00and at our breakfast meeting and tell
  171. 6:01your story and i said okay
  172. 6:04so i arranged a little talk went and
  173. 6:05shared my story that morning and guess
  174. 6:07what
  175. 6:08they liked it
  176. 6:10and my phone rang another club called
  177. 6:12and said would you come and tell us that
  178. 6:13story
  179. 6:14my phone rings another club call said
  180. 6:17we've heard about your story we have a
  181. 6:18luncheon meeting would you come share
  182. 6:20your story
  183. 6:21first thing i know i'm spending a little
  184. 6:23piece of my time
  185. 6:24giving these breakfast talks and
  186. 6:26luncheon talks
  187. 6:28and then one day a man who heard my talk
  188. 6:30about three times said would you come
  189. 6:32and talk to my management and sales
  190. 6:34people he said i've got this little
  191. 6:35company going

  193. 6:38spend some time talking with my
  194. 6:41management and sales people i'd be happy
  195. 6:42to pay you

  197. 6:46something
  198. 6:48tell my story and my experiences and get
  199. 6:50paid he said i'd be happy to
  200. 6:52little did i know that was the beginning
  201. 6:55of a whole new
  202. 6:56brand new adventure for me
  203. 6:59in sharing my story and speeches and
  204. 7:01talks and seminars and lectures
  205. 7:04and now this business become one of my
  206. 7:07most flourishing enterprises takes me
  207. 7:09around the world
  208. 7:10i went to many countries just this year
  209. 7:12had my largest audience early this year
  210. 7:15in spain
  211. 7:16twelve thousand people
  212. 7:18uh ten different languages being
  213. 7:20translated at the same time
  214. 7:22the whole audience with the earphones on
  215. 7:25it's interesting when you lecture with
  216. 7:27multi-languages you know when you hit
  217. 7:30the punch line you know the spanish
  218. 7:31laugh first and then the french get it
  219. 7:33and then finally the italians get it and
  220. 7:35last the germans finally get it
  221. 7:38and then i say hey the germans finally
  222. 7:40got it i guess we can continue
  223. 7:42you know some languages take long longer
  224. 7:44to translate than other languages
  225. 7:47but what an exciting adventure for me i
  226. 7:49was in israel this year
  227. 7:51i lectured in france my first trip to
  228. 7:54prague czechoslovakia
  229. 7:57lisbon portugal
  230. 7:59last year i was in london lecturing
  231. 8:02happened to be there the same night
  232. 8:03pavarotti was singing in london
  233. 8:06so big dilemma for the people in london
  234. 8:09shall we go see jim rohn or shall we go
  235. 8:11listen to pavarotti
  236. 8:13well i must admit he had more people
  237. 8:15than i did like a hundred and fifty
  238. 8:17thousand more
  239. 8:18he did a free concert in hyde park
  240. 8:21and they expected a quarter of a million
  241. 8:23but only a hundred and fifty 000 showed
  242. 8:25up because it rained
  243. 8:27and they all got soaked from prince
  244. 8:29charles on down but they sat in the rain
  245. 8:31and listened to pavarotti
  246. 8:34i would have been happy that evening
  247. 8:36right to cancel my seminar and go sit in
  248. 8:38the rain and listen to pavarotti anyway
  249. 8:41he and i have agreed now not to appear
  250. 8:43in the same city on the same day anymore
  251. 8:46not really but
  252. 8:47how exciting for me to be able to travel
  253. 8:50all around the world and share my story
  254. 8:53and then especially to have this chance
  255. 8:54today to come and visit with you
  256. 8:57and when i get a chance to speak at a at
  257. 8:59a high school class or a university
  258. 9:02class i'm always excited about it
  259. 9:04i'm limited in time so i wanted to use
  260. 9:06this way to come and share my story with
  261. 9:10you and some ideas that might be helpful
  262. 9:14in your career for the future
  263. 9:16in your now busy life as a student
  264. 9:20and then wherever you find yourself in
  265. 9:21the years to come
  266. 9:23some of the things i'm going to share
  267. 9:24with you i want you to remember for a
  268. 9:26long long time because the ideas i want
  269. 9:28to translate for you
  270. 9:29drastically affected my life
  271. 9:32and if i can share now and affect your
  272. 9:34life and you write me a letter
  273. 9:36or tell me in person someday mr rohn i
  274. 9:38listened to your video and i watched it
  275. 9:40carefully and sure enough some of the
  276. 9:42ideas that you shared
  277. 9:44greatly affected me and here's what's
  278. 9:45happened to my bank account here's what
  279. 9:47happened to me in school here's what's
  280. 9:49happening to my future that'll give me
  281. 9:51great great satisfaction
  282. 9:54so the man who shared with me ideas that
  283. 9:56changed my life i want to share with you
  284. 9:58three of those basic subjects
  285. 10:00uh when i met him i was 25 years old
  286. 10:04and uh when i first got acquainted with
  287. 10:06him i used a lot of excuses as to why i
  288. 10:09wasn't doing well
  289. 10:10and he said well tell me a little bit
  290. 10:12about your story and i told him you know
  291. 10:14i was behind on my bills had pennies in
  292. 10:17my pocket nothing in the bank
  293. 10:19that i was embarrassed about being
  294. 10:21behind on my big mouth promises to my
  295. 10:23family
  296. 10:24and then he gave me one little simple
  297. 10:26phrase
  298. 10:27that really forever changed my life and
  299. 10:29here's what he said mr rohn if you want
  300. 10:32the future to change for you
  301. 10:34you've got to change
  302. 10:36and he said if you don't change the next
  303. 10:38six years of your life is going to be
  304. 10:40just like the last six
  305. 10:42you'll still be behind on your bills
  306. 10:43you'll still
  307. 10:44be behind on your promises
  308. 10:46but then he gave it to me in the form of
  309. 10:48a promise when i was 25 years old i've
  310. 10:51remembered it all these years
  311. 10:53and i've shared this promise now with
  312. 10:55probably over 3 million people
  313. 10:57in the last 30 plus years and it's going
  314. 11:00to be valid for you so listen carefully
  315. 11:02to this promise my teacher said to me
  316. 11:05young man if you will change
  317. 11:08everything will change for you
  318. 11:10if you will get better
  319. 11:12everything will get better for you
  320. 11:14what a clear message that was for me
  321. 11:17he said if you'll change your philosophy
  322. 11:18if you'll change your habits
  323. 11:20if you'll refine your thinking
  324. 11:22if you'll change and accept some new
  325. 11:24disciplines
  326. 11:25if you'll turn the corner where you've
  327. 11:27been in the past go for a new life for
  328. 11:29the future he said all kinds of
  329. 11:31remarkable things will happen for you if
  330. 11:33you will change
  331. 11:36before i met mr show if i used to cross
  332. 11:37my fingers and say i sure hope things
  333. 11:39will change
  334. 11:41i was hoping the government would change
  335. 11:42and the tax structure would change and
  336. 11:44that my boss would change and pay me
  337. 11:46more money
  338. 11:48i was hoping that you know
  339. 11:50economics would change and prices would
  340. 11:52come down
  341. 11:54and i was hoping that circumstances
  342. 11:56would get better
  343. 11:58and then i discovered from my teacher
  344. 12:01that those things are going to continue
  345. 12:02the same
  346. 12:03in fact all of those things that
  347. 12:05happened to us
  348. 12:06is kind of like the wind that blows
  349. 12:11and the wind blows on us all
  350. 12:14in fact in america especially
  351. 12:17the last six and a half thousand years
  352. 12:19of recorded history we've got probably
  353. 12:20the most favorable wind that's ever
  354. 12:22blown economics
  355. 12:24and circumstances living in a free
  356. 12:26country
  357. 12:28democracy and freedom
  358. 12:30uh an excellent economy
  359. 12:33sure we struggle at times but compared
  360. 12:35to the rest of the world in the last six
  361. 12:36and a half thousand years we've got the
  362. 12:38best wind ever
  363. 12:39but if you just let the wind blow
  364. 12:41i'm telling you it won't take you where
  365. 12:43you want to go
  366. 12:44all of us
  367. 12:45must use this wind to take us to the
  368. 12:47dreams we've got
  369. 12:49to the equities we want to the money we
  370. 12:51want to the income we want
  371. 12:54and to all the things we want our life
  372. 12:56to have
  373. 12:57this is where we want to go and we've
  374. 12:59got a good wind
  375. 13:01but we must not leave our future just to
  376. 13:03the wind just to the economy uh just to
  377. 13:06the structure of the way things are
  378. 13:07happening today here's what we must
  379. 13:09learn to do
  380. 13:10and that is set a good sale
  381. 13:14and if you'll learn to set a good sale
  382. 13:16and that's what my teacher taught me in
  383. 13:17those early days he said mr own the wind
  384. 13:19is going to blow however it's going to
  385. 13:21blow
  386. 13:22politics are going to be politics and
  387. 13:24the economy is going to be the economy
  388. 13:26and however it turns out that's the way
  389. 13:28it's going to be what you must learn to
  390. 13:30do is not to wish for a better wind
  391. 13:34that's naive the key is to wish for the
  392. 13:36wisdom and the skills and the learning
  393. 13:39so that you can set
  394. 13:40a better sail and so that's what i did
  395. 13:43at age 25 i went to work not on the
  396. 13:46economy
  397. 13:47i went to work not on the community i
  398. 13:50didn't go to work to try to change the
  399. 13:51government i didn't go to work to try to
  400. 13:53change my boss or the company
  401. 13:55i didn't go to work to try to change
  402. 13:57circumstances i went to work to try to
  403. 13:59change myself
  404. 14:01and i picked up that promise my teacher
  405. 14:03shared with me that if i would change my
  406. 14:06income would change if i would change my
  407. 14:08bank account would change
  408. 14:10if i would change my future would change
  409. 14:12and sure enough his promise came true
  410. 14:15for me
  411. 14:16the first six years of my economic life
  412. 14:18i wound up broke those pennies in my
  413. 14:20pocket nothing in the bank behind on my
  414. 14:22promises
  415. 14:23the second six years of my economic life
  416. 14:26i wound up rich
  417. 14:28but interestingly enough the second six
  418. 14:30years of my economic life the government
  419. 14:31was about the same and the economy was
  420. 14:33about the same
  421. 14:35you know the companies were about the
  422. 14:36same what they paid was the same
  423. 14:38uh circumstances around me were the same
  424. 14:41you know my negative relatives were the
  425. 14:43same but i was not the same
  426. 14:46that's how my life changed and that's
  427. 14:48how
  428. 14:49things started working for me
  429. 14:51uh changing my life all those years ago
  430. 14:54so that's what i wanted to share with
  431. 14:55you to begin with this beginning of what
  432. 14:58mr show shared with me that if i wanted
  433. 14:59my life to change
  434. 15:01this was what i was going to have to do
  435. 15:03and so he broke it down into three
  436. 15:05subjects
  437. 15:07that really made an impact on my life
  438. 15:09and i want to share those with you
  439. 15:11the first subject he called
  440. 15:14personal development
  441. 15:17and the second subject he called setting
  442. 15:19goals
  443. 15:21and the third was how to become
  444. 15:23financially
  445. 15:25independent
  446. 15:27and i'd like to give you just a few
  447. 15:28clues
  448. 15:30from those three major subjects that so
  449. 15:32dramatically affected my life
  450. 15:35and let's get started the first one
  451. 15:38is personal development
  452. 15:40now in illustrating personal development
  453. 15:46mr shelf my teacher started with
  454. 15:49money
  455. 15:50you know money is not the only place to
  456. 15:52start in talking personal development
  457. 15:57but it's where he started so let me
  458. 15:59share the thoughts he shared with me
  459. 16:00back then let me share them with you
  460. 16:03here's the best lesson i can give you
  461. 16:06on economics it's very simple we get
  462. 16:09paid for bringing value
  463. 16:12to the marketplace
  464. 16:14that's about as simple as i can put
  465. 16:16economics we get paid for bringing value
  466. 16:19to the marketplace
  467. 16:21now it takes time to bring value to the
  468. 16:24marketplace
  469. 16:26however
  470. 16:28we do not get paid for time
  471. 16:30so we cross that out
  472. 16:33mistakenly the man says i'm making about
  473. 16:35twenty dollars for an hour not true
  474. 16:38if that was true you could just stay
  475. 16:39home right and have them send your money
  476. 16:42so that's not true we don't get paid for
  477. 16:44time we get paid for value
  478. 16:46brought to the marketplace
  479. 16:48now since that's true here's one of the
  480. 16:50key questions of my
  481. 16:52talk to you today is it possible to
  482. 16:54become twice as valuable
  483. 16:56to the marketplace
  484. 16:58and make twice as much money in the same
  485. 17:01time is that possible the answer is yes
  486. 17:04could you become three times as valuable
  487. 17:07as you might be right now to the
  488. 17:08marketplace and make three times as much
  489. 17:10money in the same time and the answer is
  490. 17:12yes five times ten times of course
  491. 17:16america is unique it's a ladder decline
  492. 17:19it starts down here let's say at five
  493. 17:20dollars an hour and it keeps going up
  494. 17:25top income last year
  495. 17:2780 million dollars
  496. 17:29the guy who runs coca-cola
  497. 17:32now that's a heck of a ladder that's why
  498. 17:34everybody wants to come here
  499. 17:36right the boat people are not headed for
  500. 17:37vietnam
  501. 17:38uh people haven't plotted in scheme for
  502. 17:4050 years saying if i could just get to
  503. 17:42poland everything would be okay
  504. 17:44not true everybody wants to come to
  505. 17:46america and the reason is because we've
  506. 17:48got the best wind ever
  507. 17:50blowing in our favor we've got the best
  508. 17:53economic opportunity anybody's had in
  509. 17:55six and a half thousand years
  510. 17:57and all you have to do is understand it
  511. 17:59and take advantage of it
  512. 18:01now there's some key questions to ask
  513. 18:03here why would the marketplace pay
  514. 18:04someone
  515. 18:06only five dollars an hour
  516. 18:09very simple answer
  517. 18:11they're not very valuable to the
  518. 18:12marketplace now we must underline to the
  519. 18:15marketplace
  520. 18:16this person might be a very valuable
  521. 18:18brother yes member the family valuable
  522. 18:21yes
  523. 18:23valuable member of the church of course
  524. 18:25valuable citizen of the country yes
  525. 18:29valuable in the sight of god no doubt
  526. 18:31we're all of equal value in the sight of
  527. 18:33god
  528. 18:34but if you're not very valuable to the
  529. 18:36marketplace
  530. 18:37you don't get much money
  531. 18:40you say well it shouldn't be that way
  532. 18:42well then you've got to start your own
  533. 18:43country you know this one's been in
  534. 18:45process for 200 years and this is the
  535. 18:47best we've been able to come up with so
  536. 18:48far
  537. 18:50but here's the key you don't have to
  538. 18:52stay here
  539. 18:53now there was a big debate in congress
  540. 18:55last year that this five dollars was not
  541. 18:57enough should be six should be six
  542. 18:59should be six
  543. 19:00but we don't need legislation six is
  544. 19:02already on this ladder
  545. 19:05the next step up
  546. 19:07you know if you work for mcdonald's
  547. 19:09they'll pay you five dollars an hour to
  548. 19:10take out the trash if you whistle while
  549. 19:12you take out the trash they'll pay you
  550. 19:13six dollars an hour
  551. 19:15so we don't need that legislation you
  552. 19:17just need to take lessons on how to
  553. 19:18whistle have a good attitude
  554. 19:21now as you begin to climb this ladder
  555. 19:23why would the marketplace pay some
  556. 19:25people fifty dollars an hour
  557. 19:28answer evidently
  558. 19:30they must be more
  559. 19:32valuable to the marketplace
  560. 19:35ten times more valuable
  561. 19:37and is that possible for someone to be
  562. 19:39ten times more valuable and earn fifty
  563. 19:41dollars an hour instead of five the
  564. 19:43answer is yes that's what america is all
  565. 19:45about
  566. 19:47now why would the marketplace pay some
  567. 19:49people
  568. 19:51five hundred dollars an hour
  569. 19:53evidently
  570. 19:55this person must be
  571. 19:57much more valuable to the marketplace
  572. 20:00that's what's important to understand to
  573. 20:01the marketplace
  574. 20:04and would the marketplace pay one person
  575. 20:0680 million dollars for one year's work
  576. 20:09and the answer is of course
  577. 20:11if you helped a company make a billion
  578. 20:14dollars would they pay you 80 million
  579. 20:16i'm telling you it is possible
  580. 20:19and that's why america is so exciting
  581. 20:21that's why this financial ladder is so
  582. 20:24exciting
  583. 20:25it's possible
  584. 20:26for all of this to come true for all of
  585. 20:28you no matter where you start as a
  586. 20:30student in school
  587. 20:31just getting started out there in the
  588. 20:33workplace
  589. 20:34this is all possible for you
  590. 20:36now mr shelf gave me the clue
  591. 20:39on how to climb this ladder as high as i
  592. 20:42wanted to climb
  593. 20:44now we're talking primarily economics
  594. 20:46here there's a lot of other ways to
  595. 20:47become valuable to your family valuable
  596. 20:49to your friends valuable to the
  597. 20:51community
  598. 20:52valuable to the team
  599. 20:54right valuable to the to the
  600. 20:57team effort valuable to the concert
  601. 21:00but here's what he said to me in
  602. 21:02climbing this ladder economically all
  603. 21:04you have to do is work harder
  604. 21:06on yourself
  605. 21:08than you do
  606. 21:09on your job
  607. 21:11once i heard that it made sense to me
  608. 21:15i kept hoping that everything else would
  609. 21:16change around me found out that if i
  610. 21:19went to work on myself worked on my
  611. 21:21skills
  612. 21:22worked on my language if i became better
  613. 21:25than i was each year if i grew in skills
  614. 21:29and language and vocabulary and
  615. 21:31competence then
  616. 21:33i would become attractive to the
  617. 21:35marketplace
  618. 21:36not very long ago a company called me
  619. 21:38and said mr owen we're expanding
  620. 21:40internationally
  621. 21:41we'd like to have a bit of your
  622. 21:42expertise to help us
  623. 21:44would you give us a bit of your time
  624. 21:46we'll add some millions to your fortune
  625. 21:48and i said okay
  626. 21:50and i thought later isn't that
  627. 21:52interesting they would call me then my
  628. 21:54second thought was of course they'd call
  629. 21:55me who else would they call i can get
  630. 21:58the job done
  631. 21:59now what a contrast for me farm boy from
  632. 22:02idaho raised in obscurity parents of
  633. 22:04modest means broke when i was 25
  634. 22:07how come i would get a telephone call
  635. 22:09and someone offered me a lot of money to
  636. 22:11help them in expanding around the world
  637. 22:13simple answer evidently
  638. 22:16something happened to me between age 25
  639. 22:19and where i am today
  640. 22:21and i can tell you where it all started
  641. 22:23from my teacher mr schoeff who said to
  642. 22:25me we don't have to change what's going
  643. 22:27on out there that's the wind that's
  644. 22:29blowing
  645. 22:30all we have to do is change what's going
  646. 22:32on in here
  647. 22:34and now there's several ways to do that
  648. 22:36on personal development and let me give
  649. 22:39you those ways
  650. 22:40here's the first one
  651. 22:42we must learn from personal experience
  652. 22:47pretty simple learn from what happens to
  653. 22:50you
  654. 22:51take a look back over the last few
  655. 22:52months did you make some mistakes how
  656. 22:54could you correct those for the future
  657. 22:56take a look back over the last year have
  658. 22:58you done it right or done it wrong
  659. 23:00let's correct it for the next year
  660. 23:03learn from your personal experience mr
  661. 23:05chef asked me when i first met him he
  662. 23:06said mr owen how are you doing you've
  663. 23:08been out there now six years and i said
  664. 23:11i'm not doing very well he said i
  665. 23:13suggest you not do that anymore
  666. 23:16what a simple swift analysis to my
  667. 23:18situation
  668. 23:19he said if you keep doing it the next
  669. 23:20six years will be like the last six you
  670. 23:22don't want that to happen let's make the
  671. 23:24changes
  672. 23:25so learn from your personal experience
  673. 23:27now here's number two why i came to
  674. 23:29share this video experience with you
  675. 23:31today
  676. 23:32and that i call it ope other people's
  677. 23:37experiences
  678. 23:39that's me
  679. 23:40other people that's your teacher
  680. 23:43other people
  681. 23:44that's your friends and colleagues other
  682. 23:46people the people you meet that can pass
  683. 23:49along to you their experiences
  684. 23:51what's happened to them the mistakes
  685. 23:53they made how they corrected them how
  686. 23:55they change their health and change
  687. 23:56their bank account and change their
  688. 23:58income and change their future that's it
  689. 24:00other people
  690. 24:02now there's two kinds of people to learn
  691. 24:03from one is failures
  692. 24:06it's too bad failures don't give
  693. 24:08seminars right that would be valuable
  694. 24:10bring your notebook
  695. 24:12have them tell you how they lost it all
  696. 24:14and threw it all away threw their health
  697. 24:16away and threw their friendships away
  698. 24:17and things didn't work out well
  699. 24:19that would be valuable
  700. 24:21but now then we must also learn from
  701. 24:23positive people that have done well
  702. 24:26they've got the health and so we asked
  703. 24:27them how did you become so healthy
  704. 24:29they've got the skills so we asked them
  705. 24:31how did you become this skillful
  706. 24:33they've got the income so we ask them
  707. 24:35how did you get here in such a short
  708. 24:36period of time
  709. 24:38so now here's what's important in
  710. 24:40personal development
  711. 24:41in learning from other people we learn
  712. 24:43number one by observation
  713. 24:47we learn what we see we watch
  714. 24:50people that are successful in what they
  715. 24:51do
  716. 24:52in sports we watch their disciplines
  717. 24:55in business we watch their disciplines
  718. 24:58by observation what we can see the
  719. 25:01reason i created this video is something
  720. 25:02that you could see someone's experiences
  721. 25:05translated for you
  722. 25:07second we learn by what we hear
  723. 25:10i've got some of my
  724. 25:12uh lectures on cassette tape so you know
  725. 25:15you can take them with you wherever you
  726. 25:16go
  727. 25:17and
  728. 25:18learn by listening turn your car into a
  729. 25:21mobile classroom
  730. 25:22and listen
  731. 25:24and then listen to the sermon on sunday
  732. 25:26morning listen to the lectures listen to
  733. 25:28the teacher listen to someone who's got
  734. 25:30something good to say
  735. 25:32and then number three is vitally
  736. 25:34important on personal development and
  737. 25:36that is read all the books
  738. 25:38all the books you can possibly read in
  739. 25:40your lifetime
  740. 25:42mr chef got me started on my library
  741. 25:44i've got one of the better libraries
  742. 25:46haven't read everything in it but i feel
  743. 25:48smarter just walking in it by library
  744. 25:51at least i was smart enough to buy it
  745. 25:53now i got to be smart enough to read it
  746. 25:55then of course i got to be smart enough
  747. 25:56to decide what's valuable and then do it
  748. 25:59but this one is very important become a
  749. 26:01good reader
  750. 26:02some books that helped change my life mr
  751. 26:04schoff recommended of course the bible
  752. 26:07and my parents made sure i was a pretty
  753. 26:08good scholar by the time i was 18
  754. 26:11that's been so beneficial for me drawing
  755. 26:13from those illustrations
  756. 26:15uh reading about those stories people
  757. 26:17who made it and people who didn't make
  758. 26:19it and what the difference was
  759. 26:21and then other books that helped to
  760. 26:23really change my life one called think
  761. 26:25and grow rich
  762. 26:26by napoleon hill
  763. 26:29and then a book that helped me become
  764. 26:30financially independent by the time i
  765. 26:32was 31 and that book is called the
  766. 26:34richest man in babylon
  767. 26:37by george clayson and i'm going to share
  768. 26:38a little bit of that book with you when
  769. 26:40i get to financial independence today
  770. 26:42our third subject
  771. 26:44but i started reading the books
  772. 26:46attending the classes
  773. 26:48making sure that i got in front of
  774. 26:51people that had something good to say
  775. 26:54and then i started keeping a journal one
  776. 26:56of the major things my teacher taught me
  777. 26:58was to keep a journal
  778. 27:00he said don't trust your memory
  779. 27:02if you hear something good just make a
  780. 27:03little note and write it down now at
  781. 27:06first i took you know notes on pieces of
  782. 27:08paper and torn off corners and backs of
  783. 27:10old envelopes
  784. 27:11and it didn't serve me well you know
  785. 27:13thrown in a drawer then i learned to
  786. 27:15keep
  787. 27:16a journal
  788. 27:17a bound copy of all my notes so i would
  789. 27:20suggest you do the same
  790. 27:22things that impress you a poem that
  791. 27:24impresses you when you attend a class
  792. 27:27some of the ideas that impressed you jot
  793. 27:29them down
  794. 27:31you read something in a magazine right
  795. 27:33some ideas take those out put them in
  796. 27:35your journal keep a good journal the
  797. 27:36rest of your life this will serve you
  798. 27:38well my journals make up a significant
  799. 27:40portion of my own library
  800. 27:43and if you saw my library and saw my
  801. 27:45journals i tell you what you'd have to
  802. 27:46say
  803. 27:47this
  804. 27:48is the library and these are the
  805. 27:50journals of a very serious student no
  806. 27:51wonder mr rohn is invited to lecture and
  807. 27:54speak on his experiences around the
  808. 27:55world so i want the same thing to happen
  809. 27:57to you value captured
  810. 28:00that you can resort to later go back
  811. 28:02over it and review it and let it become
  812. 28:04valuable to you
  813. 28:06so that's my first subject personal
  814. 28:08development
  815. 28:09work harder on yourself than you do on
  816. 28:11your job
  817. 28:12develop the skills
  818. 28:14learn the lessons take the classes
  819. 28:17absorb all that is being taught to you
  820. 28:20these days
  821. 28:21and then later on of course you can sort
  822. 28:23it out what's valuable to you and how to
  823. 28:25refine it for your business and for your
  824. 28:27life and for your future but the main
  825. 28:29thing is to get it and start this
  826. 28:30process of personal change personal
  827. 28:33development and let me say it one more
  828. 28:35time if you will change
  829. 28:37everything will change for you you'll
  830. 28:39never be the same you'll keep growing as
  831. 28:42you look back on a few months look back
  832. 28:44on a few years you won't believe the
  833. 28:46progress you can make economically your
  834. 28:48relationship with your family your
  835. 28:50friends
  836. 28:51and whether you're in sports or
  837. 28:52economics or whatever i'm telling you
  838. 28:55that whole process of committing
  839. 28:56yourself
  840. 28:57for personal change personal value
  841. 29:00can really make your life unique and
  842. 29:02worthwhile
  843. 29:04now let's cover the second subject on
  844. 29:06setting goals
  845. 29:08mr shelf gave me some tips on setting
  846. 29:10goals that changed my life forever
  847. 29:14and i want to share those with you
  848. 29:21so let's talk about setting goals and i
  849. 29:23also want to tie
  850. 29:24it to personal development
  851. 29:28and you'll see how i'm going to do it as
  852. 29:29i progress here setting goals
  853. 29:34we need to take a look into the future
  854. 29:39there are
  855. 29:41four things to consider in terms of
  856. 29:43attitude one is how you feel about the
  857. 29:46past
  858. 29:48best advice i can give you on that is
  859. 29:49treat the past as a school let it teach
  860. 29:51you the mistakes you've made the things
  861. 29:53that went wrong the things that didn't
  862. 29:54work
  863. 29:55don't use the past as a burden to carry
  864. 29:57and don't use the past as a club to beat
  865. 29:59yourself to death
  866. 30:01past losses past failures past mistakes
  867. 30:03but let the past be a school tough
  868. 30:06school maybe we've all been through some
  869. 30:07tough stuff
  870. 30:08so if you feel good about the past draw
  871. 30:11from it for experience and let it teach
  872. 30:13you
  873. 30:14then next is how you feel about the
  874. 30:16future
  875. 30:18we've got to have the future well
  876. 30:19designed
  877. 30:21the future is called the promise
  878. 30:24and here's what we teach in our
  879. 30:25leadership series
  880. 30:27the promise of the future can be an
  881. 30:29awesome force
  882. 30:31for your own future the promise of the
  883. 30:34future designing the future there's two
  884. 30:36ways to face the future one is with
  885. 30:38apprehension
  886. 30:39and the other is with anticipation
  887. 30:42i promise you in my travels around the
  888. 30:44world most people face the future with
  889. 30:46apprehension and here's why they don't
  890. 30:48have it well designed
  891. 30:50they've sort of left that up to someone
  892. 30:52else to fix
  893. 30:54but here's the best way to face the
  894. 30:55future with anticipation
  895. 30:57and you can you can face the future with
  896. 30:59anticipation if
  897. 31:01the future is clear if the future is
  898. 31:04well
  899. 31:05designed
  900. 31:06and i would like to have you consider
  901. 31:09some thoughts
  902. 31:10with me that helped me
  903. 31:12to
  904. 31:13really change my future by giving it
  905. 31:15some thought and some consideration
  906. 31:18and here it is in setting goals it's
  907. 31:20very simple number one decide what you
  908. 31:22want
  909. 31:23you just take a little time you sit down
  910. 31:26and say what do i want what kind of
  911. 31:28skills do i want what kind of income do
  912. 31:30i want for the future uh what would i
  913. 31:32like
  914. 31:33where would i like to go
  915. 31:35places i'd like to visit
  916. 31:37uh habits i'd like to acquire skills i'd
  917. 31:40like to have
  918. 31:42you just take a little time to think
  919. 31:43about what you want
  920. 31:44economics friendships
  921. 31:47people you'd like to meet
  922. 31:48places you'd like to go you just take
  923. 31:50some time and then i suggest when you've
  924. 31:52thought about what you want for the
  925. 31:54future make a list
  926. 31:56just jot it all down
  927. 31:58so really a very simple process
  928. 32:01and then here's number three
  929. 32:03keep all the old lists
  930. 32:05i'm telling you this served me so well
  931. 32:08keeping my old list of goals
  932. 32:10i look back now 10 20 years ago at goals
  933. 32:13i set lists i made and i smile now
  934. 32:16because here's what i thought was so
  935. 32:17important you know 20 years ago now some
  936. 32:20of those things aren't even on my list
  937. 32:23i've got a new list i've grown i've
  938. 32:25changed i've matured
  939. 32:27but i give you that advice decide what
  940. 32:29you want number two write it down number
  941. 32:30three keep the old list
  942. 32:33and then here's number four
  943. 32:34when you get something that's on one of
  944. 32:36these lists check it off part of the fun
  945. 32:38of having a list is checking it off
  946. 32:41and then if you can add some drama to
  947. 32:43checking it off see that's what really
  948. 32:45helps
  949. 32:46i set a goal to go to spain many many
  950. 32:48years ago
  951. 32:50and when i finally made my first trip to
  952. 32:52spain i had that journal with me that
  953. 32:54had that list in it and while i had my
  954. 32:56journal on my lap waiting for the wheels
  955. 32:59to touch down in madrid
  956. 33:01i waited until the wheels touched the
  957. 33:03runway and i checked it off
  958. 33:05just adding a little drama
  959. 33:08so part of the fun of having a list is
  960. 33:09checking it off
  961. 33:11now here's what's important about the
  962. 33:13list
  963. 33:14and designing your future
  964. 33:16if the future gets clear the price
  965. 33:20gets easier
  966. 33:22because you got to remember for every
  967. 33:24promise there's a price to pay
  968. 33:28everybody's got to pay the price
  969. 33:29everybody's got to do the deal
  970. 33:31everybody's got to do the disciplines
  971. 33:33everybody has to pay
  972. 33:35but here's what i've discovered if the
  973. 33:37promise is clear
  974. 33:39and powerful the price is easy to pay
  975. 33:43the price is some classes the price is a
  976. 33:45few books the price is a few disciplines
  977. 33:48the price is finding something that'll
  978. 33:49make your life better make you grow make
  979. 33:51you change make you develop
  980. 33:53so the first part of the key is to
  981. 33:55design the promise then what is the
  982. 33:57price to pay i'm telling you the price
  983. 33:59will be easy
  984. 34:01anybody in my audience can pay it no
  985. 34:03matter where you are where you come from
  986. 34:06color doesn't matter religion doesn't
  987. 34:07matter where you grew up doesn't matter
  988. 34:09circumstances don't matter i'm telling
  989. 34:10you
  990. 34:11if you'll make the promise of the future
  991. 34:13clear for yourself the things you want
  992. 34:15the places you want to go things you
  993. 34:17want to have the person you want to
  994. 34:19become the skills you want the homes you
  995. 34:21want the future you want the friends you
  996. 34:23want
  997. 34:24all of the values of life that you could
  998. 34:26possibly want
  999. 34:27if you'll make that clear make those
1000. 34:29lists and be serious about it i promise
1001. 34:32you it's an easy price to pay
  1002. 34:34anybody can pay it
1003. 34:36and the best advice i can give you is if
1004. 34:38i can do it you can do it farm boy from
1005. 34:40idaho raised in obscurity i changed my
1006. 34:43life turned it upside down turned it all
  1007. 34:45around
1008. 34:46found economics found future found
1009. 34:48promise and if i can do it you can do it
1010. 34:51so start setting your goals
  1011. 34:54and see if you can't get a better
1012. 34:56excitement going for the things you want
1013. 34:58to accomplish for the future
  1014. 35:01now here's my third subject
  1015. 35:03and that's called financial independence
1016. 35:06oh by the way before i get to financial
1017. 35:08independence let me cover one more point
1018. 35:12one of the major reasons for setting
  1019. 35:13goals
1020. 35:15is for what they make of you
  1021. 35:17in achieving them
1022. 35:19my teacher advised me when i first got
1023. 35:22started at age 25 he said jim why don't
  1024. 35:24you set a goal to become a millionaire
1025. 35:27he said it's got a nice ring to it
1026. 35:31you know enough zeroes to impress your
  1027. 35:33accountant
1028. 35:34and he said i'm here to help you you're
  1029. 35:37only 25 years old you've been to one
  1030. 35:39year of college you've got a beautiful
1031. 35:40family every reason to do it why don't
  1032. 35:42you set a goal to become a millionaire
  1033. 35:45and he said here's why
  1034. 35:47and i thought he doesn't need to teach
1035. 35:48me why wouldn't it be nice to have a
1036. 35:50million dollars he said no then you'll
  1037. 35:53miss it he said here's why
1038. 35:55for what it will make of you to achieve
  1039. 35:58it
1040. 36:00i'm telling you that statement changed
  1041. 36:02my life
1042. 36:03set the kind of goals that will make
1043. 36:05something of you to achieve them
1044. 36:07he said now once you become a
  1045. 36:09millionaire what's important is not the
  1046. 36:10money
  1047. 36:11i thought that's kind of strange
  1048. 36:13teaching he said honest it isn't
1049. 36:15important he said you could just give
  1050. 36:16the money away
1051. 36:17now i did better than that i lost it all
  1052. 36:20by the time i was 31 i was a millionaire
  1053. 36:22by the time i was 33 i was broke
  1054. 36:24and i'll tell you a little bit about
  1055. 36:25that story later
1056. 36:27but when i lost all my money guess what
1057. 36:29i found out mr chef was right what was
1058. 36:31valuable was not the money what was
1059. 36:33valuable was what i became to earn the
  1060. 36:35money
  1061. 36:36the skills i had the knowledge i had
  1062. 36:38about the marketplace
1063. 36:40the values that i had going for me they
1064. 36:43were more valuable than the money and
1065. 36:45here's an important statement to
1066. 36:46remember it's not what you get that
  1067. 36:48makes you valuable
  1068. 36:49it's what you become
1069. 36:51so part of the key here is to set the
1070. 36:53kind of goals that will make something
1071. 36:55of you don't set them too low
1072. 36:57so that you don't have to grow and you
1073. 36:58don't have to read and you don't have to
  1074. 37:00try and you don't have to stretch don't
  1075. 37:02set them too low
  1076. 37:04and then don't sell out
1077. 37:06don't go for something that's going to
1078. 37:08cost you your virtue or cost you your
  1079. 37:10values
1080. 37:11or sell out your principles
1081. 37:14there's a good middle road here to
1082. 37:15follow goals that will inspire
1083. 37:18goals that will help you grow change
1084. 37:20develop and become better than you are
  1085. 37:22okay
  1086. 37:24now let's talk about financial
  1087. 37:25independence
  1088. 37:27how to become rich by 40 35 if you're
1089. 37:30extra bright much sooner if you find an
  1090. 37:32opportunity like i did
1091. 37:34let me show you how i did it
  1092. 37:36financial independence
  1093. 37:41first of all
1094. 37:46i like the phrase financial independence
1095. 37:49some people are a little bit concerned
1096. 37:51about using the word becoming rich
1097. 37:54or becoming wealthy and i can understand
  1098. 37:56that i struggled a little bit with this
1099. 37:58is it okay to go for becoming rich go
  1100. 38:01for becoming wealthy
  1101. 38:03and maybe that's a bit too strong the
1102. 38:04word or stronger term so
  1103. 38:07here's what i've come up with that i
1104. 38:08think is comfortable for me and that is
1105. 38:09how to become financially independent
  1106. 38:12i think it's every person's heritage
  1107. 38:14here especially in america
1108. 38:17to become financially independent now
1109. 38:19let me give you my definition of
  1110. 38:21financial independence financial
1111. 38:23independence is the ability to live
1112. 38:26from the income of your own personal
  1113. 38:28resources
1114. 38:30financial independence now it depends on
1115. 38:32how you want to live
1116. 38:34if you need two three thousand dollars a
1117. 38:35month if you need four or five thousand
1118. 38:37a month if you need ten thousand a month
1119. 38:38some people may need you know hundred
  1120. 38:40thousand a month
1121. 38:42but whatever you would need to live
1122. 38:45and you could earn that living from the
1123. 38:47income of your own personal resources
  1124. 38:50that's what i call financial freedom
  1125. 38:52financial independence
1126. 38:54and let me show you how to acquire it
  1127. 38:57if you start at age 15
  1128. 38:59between ages 15 and 35
  1129. 39:03is 20 years
1130. 39:05and in my personal opinion based on my
1131. 39:07own studies and my own experience 20
1132. 39:09years in my opinion is enough time to
  1133. 39:11become financially independent if you're
  1134. 39:14not
1135. 39:16you don't live in the wrong country
1136. 39:18probably what's happened is you have the
  1137. 39:20wrong plan
1138. 39:22and it's easy to be a nice person with
1139. 39:23the wrong plan i found that when i was
  1140. 39:2525 years old i was broke at age 25 and i
1141. 39:28was a nice guy you would have liked me
1142. 39:30but i'm telling you my plans up until
1143. 39:33then especially my financial plan left
  1144. 39:35me broke
1145. 39:36i totally changed it the next six years
  1146. 39:38and i became financially independent so
1147. 39:40i know what i'm talking about it is
1148. 39:42possible in a reasonable amount of time
  1149. 39:4615 to 35
1150. 39:47whatever 20 years time enough time you
1151. 39:50can do it in much shorter period of time
1152. 39:52like i did if you want to but this is a
  1153. 39:55reasonable enough time
1154. 39:56but here's number one first of all you
1155. 39:58gotta have the right philosophy
1156. 40:02philosophy is our ability to gather
1157. 40:04knowledge and sort through it and decide
  1158. 40:07what's valuable
  1159. 40:08to develop a philosophy about life a
  1160. 40:10philosophy about our health
1161. 40:12a philosophy about our family
  1162. 40:14relationships
1163. 40:15a philosophy about economics and if you
  1164. 40:17develop the right philosophy
1165. 40:19that's what helps to set this sail
1166. 40:24so that in six years it takes you where
1167. 40:26you want to go instead of winding up
1168. 40:28like i did that first six years of my
1169. 40:30economics broke no money empty bank
  1170. 40:32account
1171. 40:34the right philosophy now let me give you
1172. 40:35a couple of philosophies to consider
1173. 40:37here's the first one it's called the
  1174. 40:39philosophy of the poor
  1175. 40:42and here it is
  1176. 40:44poor people
  1177. 40:45usually spend their money
  1178. 40:48and invest what's left
1179. 40:52the philosophy of the poor
1180. 40:54now here's the philosophy of the rich
1181. 40:56rich people invest their money
  1182. 40:59and spend what's left
  1183. 41:01and here's the startling answer
1184. 41:03it really doesn't matter what the amount
  1185. 41:05is
1186. 41:06what's most important is not the amount
1187. 41:08what's really important is the
  1188. 41:10philosophy
1189. 41:11so i would ask you to adopt this
  1190. 41:13philosophy
  1191. 41:15of spending
1192. 41:17after you have invested invest first
  1193. 41:19then spend and i've got a little formula
1194. 41:22that i'm going to share with you
1195. 41:24now what should a child do with a dollar
1196. 41:28i mean there's a lot of debate going on
1197. 41:30i'm sure across the country on what a
1198. 41:31child should do with the dollar here's
  1199. 41:32one opinion it's only a child and it's
1200. 41:34only a dollar what difference does it
  1201. 41:36make
  1202. 41:37well
1203. 41:38in my opinion it makes all the
  1204. 41:39difference in the world
  1205. 41:41a person's economic future starts
  1206. 41:44with a child with a dollar
1207. 41:46somebody says oh no you're only young
1208. 41:48once let him spend it all well when
1209. 41:50would you hope that would stop
  1210. 41:53somebody says well wait till he's 50 and
1211. 41:55broke like me and you know and then
  1212. 41:56he'll learn
1213. 41:57well no we don't want to wait that long
1214. 41:59if i would have known earlier than age
  1215. 42:0125 i would have changed
1216. 42:04in high school if i if they would have
  1217. 42:06had classes called wealth 1 wealth 2 i'd
1218. 42:08have taken both classes i would not have
  1219. 42:10waited until age 25.
1220. 42:13so the earlier the better so what should
  1221. 42:16a child do with a dollar here's the
1222. 42:17simple premise to begin with don't spend
  1223. 42:20it all
1224. 42:21and if a child wants to spend the whole
1225. 42:23dollar you got to say hey don't spend it
  1226. 42:24all
  1227. 42:25you know
1228. 42:27don't spend it all they'll say why not
  1229. 42:29it's my dollar i earned it
1230. 42:31you say i know you earned it but don't
  1231. 42:32spend it all
1232. 42:34they'll still say why not say let me
1233. 42:35show you why not so you put them in your
1234. 42:37car take them to the other side of town
1235. 42:40and show them where people live that
  1236. 42:41spend the whole dollar
1237. 42:43just drive them around kids learn best
  1238. 42:45by visual
1239. 42:46just drive around and say would you like
1240. 42:48to live here kid says no
1241. 42:50would you like to live like these people
1242. 42:51live kid says no no
1243. 42:55then you can't spend the whole dollar
  1244. 42:57so
1245. 42:58kids will get the message so you know
1246. 43:00take them to other side of town show
1247. 43:01them around unless you already live
1248. 43:02there and then just show them around
  1249. 43:05anyway
1250. 43:06don't spend the whole dollar now let me
1251. 43:08give you my best view of what to do with
  1252. 43:11the dollar
1253. 43:12and i promise you if you started at age
  1254. 43:1415 now if you're over 15 right
1255. 43:16you've still got plenty of time you
  1256. 43:18still got 20 years you know if you're 30
  1257. 43:20you're still got 20 years i mean you
1258. 43:21know you've still got plenty of time to
1259. 43:23start what i'm about to share with you
  1260. 43:26what to do
  1261. 43:27with a dollar
1262. 43:30here's my first bit of advice
  1263. 43:32never spend more than
  1264. 43:3570 cents
  1265. 43:38never spend more than 70 cents
1266. 43:40now you got to pick some number and the
1267. 43:42number you pick is going to be
  1268. 43:43determined by your philosophy
1269. 43:46it's going to be determined by what
1270. 43:47you've been taught or your experience
  1271. 43:49teaching yourself
1272. 43:51when i first met my teacher mr show i
1273. 43:53was at about 110 percent of each dollar
1274. 43:56you know i'm down at budget finance
1275. 43:58hawking my furniture in my car one more
  1276. 44:00time
  1277. 44:01and then i learned a whole better
  1278. 44:04formula for financial independence
  1279. 44:05number one don't spend more than 70
  1280. 44:08cents
1281. 44:09now kids say to me well okay what do i
  1282. 44:12do with the other 30
  1283. 44:14cents
  1284. 44:15and here's what i teach them
  1285. 44:1710 cents for charity
1286. 44:22charity or church or helping people that
  1287. 44:24can't help themselves
1288. 44:2710 cents to support worthy projects
1289. 44:31projects that you feel good about 10
1290. 44:33cents out of every dollar
1291. 44:35it's called being generous with part of
  1292. 44:37what you've taken out of society
1293. 44:41now in my opinion nothing teaches us
  1294. 44:44character
1295. 44:46better than generosity no class no
1296. 44:48teacher no book teacher generosity
1297. 44:51teaches character better than generosity
1298. 44:53and the best time to start is when the
  1299. 44:55amounts are small
1300. 44:57and i know if kids learn these lessons
  1301. 44:59well they'll give a dime out of a dollar
  1302. 45:01help people that can't help themselves
  1303. 45:03support worthy projects
1304. 45:05or if you belong to a church they teach
  1305. 45:06tithe piece of that's very important
  1306. 45:10now
1307. 45:12because when the amounts get larger
  1308. 45:13sometimes it's a little more difficult
1309. 45:15you know giving a hundred thousand out
  1310. 45:17of a million someone says oh if i had a
  1311. 45:18million i'd give a hundred thousand i'm
  1312. 45:20not sure that's a lot of money
1313. 45:22so the time to start is when the amounts
1314. 45:24are small ten cents out of the dollar
  1315. 45:27okay next ten cents
  1316. 45:29i call active capital
1317. 45:33active capital means do something to
  1318. 45:35make a profit
  1319. 45:38active capital
1320. 45:40set aside a portion of your income
1321. 45:43wages are okay but i'm telling you wages
1322. 45:45will make you a living profits will make
  1323. 45:47you a fortune
1324. 45:49so set aside part of your income
1325. 45:51as capital called active capital
1326. 45:54any kind of project you can possibly
1327. 45:56think of you can possibly come up with
1328. 45:58i'm going to write a new book i think
1329. 46:00for kids i think the title is going to
1330. 46:02be of course kids should pay taxes
1331. 46:04it's kind of an interesting title in
1332. 46:06california kids do pay taxes
  1333. 46:08when a child walks into 7-eleven buy
  1334. 46:10something that costs a dollar the
1335. 46:11proprietor says give me seven more
  1336. 46:13pennies
1337. 46:15and the child says hey what's the seven
  1338. 46:17pennies for the proprietor says that's
  1339. 46:19the taxes
1340. 46:21kid says well hey i'm only eight years
  1341. 46:22old proprietor says congratulations
  1342. 46:24you're my youngest taxpayer
1343. 46:26give me the money so in california where
1344. 46:29i live kids do pay taxes big question is
  1345. 46:31should they
1346. 46:32and my book will answer that question of
1347. 46:34course kids should pay taxes nothing is
  1348. 46:36for free
1349. 46:38if you want to ride your bicycle on the
1350. 46:39sidewalk instead of in the mud you gotta
  1351. 46:42pay the seven pennies
1352. 46:44nothing is free so we all have to pay
  1353. 46:47so
1354. 46:4910 cents out of your living
1355. 46:52out of the money you earn set aside for
  1356. 46:54capital
1357. 46:56to try your best to show
  1358. 46:59a profit
1359. 47:00and in my books gonna be all kinds of
1360. 47:01ways kids can make money right two
1361. 47:03bicycles one to ride one to rent i mean
1362. 47:06you know it doesn't take long to figure
  1363. 47:08out some enterprise that'll start making
  1364. 47:10a profit
1365. 47:11then you must jot this down if you're
1366. 47:13taking notes profits are better
  1367. 47:16than wages
1368. 47:17one you can't usually start wages until
  1369. 47:19you're about 16 15 16
1370. 47:22but you can make a profit long before
1371. 47:25you're eligible to start earning wages
1372. 47:28and then there's no limit to profits and
1373. 47:30they can they can double and triple and
  1374. 47:32quadruple you know there's no limit it's
1375. 47:35incredible how fast profits can grow
1376. 47:38so profits are better than wages wages
  1377. 47:40make you a living profits make you a
  1378. 47:42fortune
1379. 47:44now the third 10 cents is vitally
  1380. 47:45important
1381. 47:46i call it passive capital
1382. 47:50capital you let somebody else use
1383. 47:53a financial institution stocks and bonds
1384. 47:56mutual funds whatever let someone else
1385. 47:58use it you furnish the money they use it
1386. 48:01to make a profit but they pay you for
1387. 48:03the use of it called interest
  1388. 48:05and here's one of the things that'll
1389. 48:06make you financially independent fairly
  1390. 48:08quickly and that's called compound
  1391. 48:11interest
1392. 48:12and this is how you get it letting
1393. 48:13someone else use a portion of your
  1394. 48:17honey your substance
1395. 48:19they show the profit they pay you
  1396. 48:21interest
1397. 48:22and this passive capital i'm telling you
  1398. 48:24over a sustained period of time
  1399. 48:27if you'll develop this little 10 10 10
  1400. 48:29and 70 especially starting at age 15 i'm
  1401. 48:32telling you by the time you're 35 you
  1402. 48:34will be financially independent you'll
1403. 48:36have the ability to live from the income
  1404. 48:38of your own resources
1405. 48:40and then one more point on passive
  1406. 48:42capital there's a bible philosophy i'm
1407. 48:44an amateur on the bible
  1408. 48:46but there's a bible philosophy that
1409. 48:48teaches the borrower is servant
  1410. 48:51to the lender
1411. 48:53and if you want to be in a powerful
  1412. 48:55position
1413. 48:56as you grow older finally when you
1414. 48:58become mature maybe have your own
  1415. 49:00business
1416. 49:01things have worked out for you for the
1417. 49:02future the position you always want to
1418. 49:04be in is the power position and that's
  1419. 49:06called the lender
1420. 49:07the lender is the power position
1421. 49:10so if kids learn early enough and then
1422. 49:12you ask them what they'd like to be when
1423. 49:13they grow up i'm telling you once they
1424. 49:15understand they'll say well one of the
1425. 49:16things i want to be is one of those
  1426. 49:18lenders
1427. 49:20that's the power position not the
  1428. 49:21spender
1429. 49:23no you'll be pitied the rest of your
1430. 49:24life if you just become a spender you
1431. 49:27got to become a lender and i think this
1432. 49:28is one formulas to follow
1433. 49:3110 cents out of every dollar let someone
1434. 49:33else use it be the lender power position
  1435. 49:36then try to show a profit
1436. 49:38can we teach our children how to take a
  1437. 49:40dollar search the neighborhood
1438. 49:42find a broken wagon pay a dollar for it
  1439. 49:45bring it home
1440. 49:46you know clean it up sand it until it's
1441. 49:48clean paint it red till it shines
  1442. 49:51straighten out the wheels till they're
  1443. 49:52true
1444. 49:53take it back to the neighborhood sell it
  1445. 49:55for five dollars
  1446. 49:57anybody can do that
1447. 49:58now does the child deserve four dollars
1448. 50:00profit and the answer is yes society now
  1449. 50:02has a mended wagon
1450. 50:04and that's what america is all about
1451. 50:06finding something touching it making it
  1452. 50:09better making a profit
1453. 50:11taking part of your resources helping
  1454. 50:12people who can't help themselves let
1455. 50:14someone else use it to make a profit
1456. 50:16some projects require more capital than
  1457. 50:18one person has
  1458. 50:20exciting
1459. 50:21and then let them pay you for the use of
  1460. 50:23it
1461. 50:24america's had this philosophy now all
1462. 50:26these years communism is taught all
1463. 50:28these years capital belongs in the hands
1464. 50:30of the state not in the hands of the
  1465. 50:32people
1466. 50:34we've been teaching all these years
1467. 50:35capital belongs in the hands of the
  1468. 50:36people
1469. 50:38not in the hands of the state and we
1470. 50:40turned out to be right
1471. 50:42capital in the hands of the kids capital
1472. 50:44in the hands of the people
  1473. 50:45enterprises that make a profit
1474. 50:47enterprises that grow it's the hope of
  1475. 50:49our future
1476. 50:50so that little simple formula
1477. 50:52i hope will help you now one more key on
1478. 50:55financial independence and that is
  1479. 50:56attitude
  1480. 50:59attitude
  1481. 51:01here's number one
1482. 51:03i used to say i hate to pay my bills
1483. 51:07my teacher straightened me out on that
1484. 51:08he said let's see mr owen what you hate
1485. 51:10to do is pay a hundred dollars on an
  1486. 51:12account
1487. 51:13and reduce your liabilities and increase
1488. 51:15your assets i said well no not if you
1489. 51:17look at it that way
1490. 51:19he said well it all depends on how you
  1491. 51:21look at it
1492. 51:22so wouldn't you love to pay your bills
1493. 51:24reduce your liabilities increase your
1494. 51:26assets you got to have that kind of
  1495. 51:28attitude
1496. 51:29i found out the same attitude about
1497. 51:31taxes i used to say i hate to pay my
1498. 51:32taxes and mr show said well that's one
  1499. 51:34way to live
1500. 51:35but don't you understand taxes is how we
1501. 51:37care and feed the goose that lays the
  1502. 51:39golden eggs
1503. 51:40wouldn't you want to do your share
1504. 51:42someone says yes but the goose eats too
  1505. 51:44much probably true
1506. 51:46but hey we all eat too much we all need
1507. 51:48to go on a diet better a fat goose than
  1508. 51:50no goose
  1509. 51:51so i finally became a happy taxpayer now
1510. 51:54i think taxes are too high so i'm
1511. 51:56working to get taxes lowered for our
1512. 51:58economic future but then whatever they
1513. 52:00turn out to be i gladly pay do my part
  1514. 52:03because that's what makes the whole
  1515. 52:04system run
1516. 52:06each of us doing our part
1517. 52:08now i want these three subjects to be
  1518. 52:10valuable for you
1519. 52:12i want them to have meaning for you
1520. 52:15i want you someday to be financially
  1521. 52:17independent
1522. 52:19i want you to have the personal
1523. 52:20development so that you feel good about
  1524. 52:22yourself
1525. 52:24if i had a chance to meet you someday
1526. 52:25i'd like to have you show me the list of
1527. 52:27goals that you got started and say mr
  1528. 52:29owen here's some i've already checked
  1529. 52:30off here's the books i'm reading
  1530. 52:34here's what's happened i'm developing
  1531. 52:35the skills i'm better this year than i
  1532. 52:37was last year
  1533. 52:39i've got more self-confidence my skills
  1534. 52:41are developing
  1535. 52:42that's what i want for you and that's
1536. 52:44why i took the time to come and share
1537. 52:46in this video message with you
1538. 52:49i do seminars all around the world but
1539. 52:50this is one way that i can reach out and
1540. 52:53touch you in case you can't come to my
  1541. 52:55seminars
  1542. 52:56wherever i am
1543. 52:57maybe this video will reach you
1544. 52:59somewhere and it'll have an impact on
  1545. 53:01your life
1546. 53:02and what i'd like to do is later hear
  1547. 53:04about it a letter phone call
1548. 53:06or to have a chance to meet you in
  1549. 53:08person
1550. 53:09and now i'd like to leave you with these
  1551. 53:10four questions
  1552. 53:13called questions to ponder
1553. 53:15these questions were valuable for me
1554. 53:17and i want to make them valuable for you
1555. 53:19here's the first one why
1556. 53:22we all ask why we should work this hard
1557. 53:25why take that many classes
1558. 53:27why go to school that many years you
1559. 53:29know why take the notes why read the
  1560. 53:32books
1561. 53:33why work that hard why put yourself
  1562. 53:35through the push-ups and the disciplines
  1563. 53:37why good question why
1564. 53:40best answer to why i think is the second
  1565. 53:42question
  1566. 53:44why not
1567. 53:45why not see how many books you can read
1568. 53:47how many classes you can take how many
  1569. 53:49skills you can develop
1570. 53:50why not see how valuable you can become
1571. 53:52to the marketplace and to your friends
  1572. 53:54and to your family
1573. 53:56why not see what you can make of
1574. 53:58yourself why not see how far you can go
1575. 54:00how much you can see
1576. 54:02how much you can earn how much you can
  1577. 54:04share
  1578. 54:05why not
1579. 54:06that's the heritage all of us have in
1580. 54:08america especially is to see what we can
1581. 54:10make out of our lives now that we've
  1582. 54:12been given this extraordinary
  1583. 54:14opportunity
1584. 54:15now my third question i'd love to ask
  1585. 54:17you in person
  1586. 54:19but since i can't do it in person i want
1587. 54:21to ask it of all of you but i want you
1588. 54:23to take it personally and my third
1589. 54:26question is why not you
  1590. 54:28why not you
  1591. 54:30with good self-esteem why not you
1592. 54:32starting to change and setting goals

  1594. 54:37toward financial independence
1595. 54:39if i can do it you can do it
  1596. 54:41i wish i had a lot more testimonials
1597. 54:43here today besides mine a whole steady
1598. 54:46stream that would come by and tell you
  1599. 54:47their story
1600. 54:49someone who started with nothing finally
  1601. 54:51run a big enterprise
1602. 54:53a mother who was on welfare now she owns
  1603. 54:55her own business
  1604. 54:57in addition to my story i wish i had a
  1605. 54:59lot more
1606. 55:00and if all of them told their story
1607. 55:02guess how they would probably wind up
  1608. 55:03their story they'd probably say just
1609. 55:05like me why not you
1610. 55:07if we can read you can read if we can
  1611. 55:09change you can change
1612. 55:10if we can figure it out you can figure
1613. 55:12it out if we can turn it around you can
  1614. 55:14turn it around
  1615. 55:15there isn't anything you can't
  1616. 55:16accomplish that's what those
  1617. 55:17testimonials would say
