Jesse 1.2.0: Indicator charts are finally here! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hey guys, it's Sole. Today I released
- 0:01version 1.2 of Jesse, which has huge
- 0:04improvements and bug fixes. And you can
- 0:06read about that in the blog post that I
- 0:09published about this release, and I'm
- 0:10going to link to it down in the
- 0:11description. But in this video, I want
- 0:14to show you the highlight of this
- 0:15release, which is probably the most
- 0:17requested feature from the community,
- 0:19and I couldn't be more proud of it. In
- 0:21fact, it's going to change how you do
- 0:22research with Jesse for your strategies
- 0:25forever. So, let's get right into it.
- 0:27So, to demonstrate how this new feature,
- 0:29which is about charts, works, I'm going
- 0:31to copy one of strategies from our
- 0:33strategies listing page.
- 0:36Let's get the code.
- 0:39Let's go to the strategies page, create
- 0:42a new one,
- 0:43and
- 0:44let's call it
- 0:46chart demo.
- 0:50And
- 0:52I'm going to paste it here.
- 0:55All right. So, let's go to back test,
- 0:57and first make sure the interactive
- 0:59charts option is disabled.
- 1:02I'm going to change the beginning to
- 1:052024, and
- 1:08lower the ending up until the third
- 1:11month.
- 1:12And actually, I forgot the time frame,
- 1:15so let's
- 1:16check it out again. It's the 4 hours.
- 1:18Okay. So, the 4 hours is fine. And we
- 1:22named it chart demo.
- 1:25The fast mode is on. All right. So,
- 1:27let's run it.
- 1:29Now, we're getting this error, which is
- 1:31actually an error I've seen so many
- 1:33beginners get, which is caused when you
- 1:35forget to change the name of the
- 1:37strategy you just copied to be the same
- 1:39as you entered before. So, let me show
- 1:41you what I mean.
- 1:42So, the name of it is chart demo, but if
- 1:44I go to the source code, it says trend
- 1:47swing trader, but in here is chart demo.
- 1:50So, let's change this
- 1:53to be chart demo.
- 1:55Go to the back test and run it again,
- 1:58and this time it should go through.
- 2:00All right. So, these are the results
- 2:01that we're getting.
- 2:03They are fine and decent.
- 2:07But we weren't really getting any charts
- 2:10for it, right? So, what if I wanted to
- 2:12make sure that the indicators are
- 2:14working the way we expected them, right?
- 2:16Now, we had this feature where you could
- 2:18export some settings and import it into
- 2:20TradingView and check it there, but it
- 2:22wasn't perfect, not at all. But now, I
- 2:25can go to the source code for this
- 2:26strategy. So, let me open my IDE. Going
- 2:29to open chart demo, and these are the
- 2:32indicators we're using, the ADX,
- 2:34the trend, which is using three moving
- 2:37averages,
- 2:39and that's it. Now, the cool thing about
- 2:42this new chart feature is that you can
- 2:44use them anywhere in your strategy, but
- 2:46it's probably the best to do it inside
- 2:48either the before or the after method of
- 2:50your strategy. So, I'm going to define
- 2:52an after method. Actually, let's
- 2:55run it first with the interactive charts
- 2:57option enabled.
- 3:02All right. So, this time, if I click on
- 3:04view chart, you can see we have an
- 3:06interactive chart, which I can zoom in
- 3:08or zoom out, and it will tell me the buy
- 3:11and sell points of the strategy.
- 3:13So, this is pretty useful, right?
- 3:16But as I said,
- 3:18what if what if you want to know the
- 3:20exact indicator values that like what
- 3:23was the EMA when we bought, what was it
- 3:26when we sold, stuff like that. So, let's
- 3:28go back to the IDE. And
- 3:31I'm going to define a new method called
- 3:34after. Now, you can use these new
- 3:36methods that I'm going to show you
- 3:38anywhere in your strategy, but it would
- 3:40be much more useful to do it inside
- 3:43either the after or the before methods
- 3:45of your strategy. And I'm going to use
- 3:47the after one. So, I'm going to say add
- 3:49line to candle chart.
- 3:54And the first value is the title,
- 3:57and I need this to be the the moving
- 4:01average. So,
- 4:03I'm going to copy these,
- 4:07paste them here.
- 4:09So, this is going to be
- 4:15the E1,
- 4:17and the value of it will be E1.
- 4:21And the color option is optional, so I'm
- 4:23going to let it be empty, but you can
- 4:26specify a color if you want it. And if
- 4:28you did, the syntax would be like this,
- 4:31right? So, actually, for the first one,
- 4:32let's do use it like this.
- 4:35For the second one, we're going to do
- 4:37E2, and the third one for E3.
- 4:41All right.
- 4:43So, let's go back,
- 4:45close this, rerun it.
- 4:50Now, if I go back here, you can see not
- 4:53only we have the candles, we also have
- 4:55the EMA values.
- 4:59All right. It's really beautiful and
- 5:01super helpful. So, we can see that yes,
- 5:04when the EMAs were the other way around,
- 5:07we started taking a short position.
- 5:09The other way around, we took a long
- 5:11position, and so on. We're also able to
- 5:14add horizontal lines. Now, an example of
- 5:16when you would use a horizontal line in
- 5:19this chart would be to specify, let's
- 5:20say, resistance and support lines. Maybe
- 5:23that is especially for a mean reversion
- 5:26or a grid strategy. But for this one,
- 5:29let's just assume that this line here is
- 5:32a support line, and we need to plot it
- 5:34for whatever reason. So, you see the
- 5:36price at this point was 42,500.
- 5:40So, let's go back to the code. So, I can
- 5:43say
- 5:44add horizontal line to candle chart. The
- 5:48first value would be title,
- 5:50so I'm going to say support.
- 5:53The value would be again
- 5:5742,500.
- 6:01And as for color, I can say, let's say,
- 6:04green.
- 6:05Now, we also have other options such as
- 6:06the line width.
- 6:10We can set it to two for a thicker line.
- 6:13And we also have the line style, which
- 6:15would accept either solid or I think
- 6:18dotted.
- 6:20Yes, dotted. All right. But I'm going to
- 6:24leave it.
- 6:25Now, if I go back
- 6:27and run it again.
- 6:29By the way, the really cool thing about
- 6:31this whole thing is that we we didn't
- 6:33specify the date. So, you just specify
- 6:36the value that you want to display. The
- 6:38date will be handled for you
- 6:40automatically behind the scenes, which
- 6:42is really cool. All right. So, let's go
- 6:44back and check out the chart, and as you
- 6:46can see, we now have a support line.
- 6:49All right. And there's no limit. You can
- 6:52plot as many as you like.
- 6:53Now, let's go to the strategy again.
- 6:56This time, I want to plot the ADX value,
- 6:59but there's an issue with that. Because
- 7:01the value for the ADX is between 1 and
- 7:04100, right? But the price range for what
- 7:08we are displaying here is BTC, and it's
- 7:10around 55,000.
- 7:13So, if I plot the values for ADX
- 7:16like what like we did for the moving
- 7:18average,
- 7:20it's not going to be pretty.
- 7:22So, let's say add line to candle chart,
- 7:27and this time say ADX,
- 7:31and give it the values.
- 7:34All right. So, let's see how this would
- 7:36look like.
- 7:39And as you see, the values of the ADX
- 7:43are barely visible, right? It looks like
- 7:45a horizontal line, but that's not really
- 7:47true. It's again, it's because they're
- 7:49not in the same range. So, it doesn't
- 7:51work. So, instead of add line to candle
- 7:54chart, I can say add line to extra
- 7:57chart.
- 8:00Now, this function
- 8:02will take one other parameter,
- 8:05which is the first one, and it is called
- 8:08the chart name. So, I'm going to give it
- 8:10the name ADX, also.
- 8:13And then the other one is the title.
- 8:15Now, why do we have both of these?
- 8:17Because you can have one chart with
- 8:19multiple lines on it. And if you want to
- 8:21do that, I would have to define another
- 8:24one, leave the chart name to ADX, but I
- 8:27could call this one something else. So,
- 8:29for example,
- 8:31so this is with the default period
- 8:33number, which is 14, right?
- 8:36So, I could define another one, and give
- 8:38it the period of 21.
- 8:40And here, I can give them the names, so
- 8:43we can distinguish them later. But
- 8:46again, the chart name has to be the same
- 8:48for them to be displayed on the same
- 8:50chart. So, now, actually, let's also
- 8:54change the color.
- 8:56Now, if we go back and rerun this.
- 9:03All right. So, we're not seeing them
- 9:04here.
- 9:05Right. It's because I chose the wrong
- 9:08function name. It's not add horizontal
- 9:10line, because we don't have a chart yet.
- 9:11So, needs to be add line add extra line
- 9:15chart.
- 9:16So, let's copy this, paste it here,
- 9:19go back, and rerun it.
- 9:25All right. So, now we have this other
- 9:28chart called ADX, and we have two lines
- 9:31on it, the ADX 21 and ADX 14,
- 9:35with different periods.
- 9:37And there's no limit for how many charts
- 9:39you can use, and there's also no limit
- 9:41for how many lines you can plot on each
- 9:44chart. So, for the ADX indicator, we
- 9:47typically want to display a threshold
- 9:49value, and only take trades when the
- 9:52value goes above that, right? So, we can
- 9:54easily do that. First, let's see what
- 9:57was our threshold.
- 9:59It was 25.
- 10:00So, here
- 10:02I'm going to say self add horizontal
- 10:05line to extra chart.
- 10:07The first value has to be the name of
- 10:08the chart, which was ADX.
- 10:11And
- 10:13as for title, let's say threshold.
- 10:17The value is 25. The color is red.
- 10:21The line what width is two. All right.
- 10:24Let's go back. We run it.
- 10:29And now we have that. So, we can easily
- 10:31see
- 10:32for example, why it didn't take any
- 10:33trades here.
- 10:35Why it didn't take trades
- 10:37let's say here, right? But here it did.
- 10:41All right. So, this is a super powerful
- 10:43feature that I just added. It's not
- 10:45perfect. I still need to add it for our
- 10:47live trading feature. And we also need
- 10:50to add another table where you can go
- 10:52through your trades and let's say click
- 10:55on whichever that looks suspicious to
- 10:57you and immediately find it on the chart
- 10:59to see what was going on in that moment.
- 11:01But as it is, I find myself to use it
- 11:03all the time when I'm researching a
- 11:05strategy and I couldn't be more in love
- 11:07with it. I hope you guys will enjoy it
- 11:09as much as I did. And if you have any
- 11:11feedback, any improvement you think I
- 11:12should add to it, please let me know in
- 11:14the comment section or on our Discord
- 11:16server. Happy trading and I'll see you
- 11:18in the next one.
