- 0:00November 8th, 2010.
- 0:03A quiet neighborhood in Maka, Ontario.
- 0:06Nothing seemed unusual until a terrified
- 0:10young lady dialed emergency services.
- 0:14My parents have been shot. She sounded
- 0:17panicked. She said armed men had broken
- 0:20into the house, tied her up, killed her
- 0:24mother, and shot her father. For police,
- 0:28it looked like another tragic home
- 0:30invasion. But over the next few days,
- 0:33tiny details began refusing to fit.
- 0:37There was no forced entry. Nothing
- 0:40valuable had been stolen. The attackers
- 0:43ignored expensive jewelry, ignored cash,
- 0:46and left behind something investigators
- 0:49would never ignore. A [music] daughter
- 0:52whose story kept changing.
- 0:54Months later, detectives would sit
- 0:57across from the same young woman for
- 1:00nearly 5 hours.
- 1:02They didn't yell, didn't accuse, they
- 1:06simply waited while one carefully
- 1:09constructed li collapsed into another.
- 1:12By the time the interrogation was over,
- 1:15one of Canada's most shocking mother
- 1:17plots [music] had been exposed.
- 1:20This is the Jennifer Pan case.

- 7:53Okay. Thank you.
- 7:56>> Thank you, sir.
- 8:02[music]
- 8:05Okay. So
- 8:09what we're going to do now is as I said
- 8:11what what education level do you have?
- 8:14>> Just a high school.
- 8:15>> High school. Have you gone to any other
- 8:17curric like after school a higher level
- 8:19of education? Have you been working
- 8:21towards anything?
- 8:22>> Uh I'm going back to school and I have
- 8:24been working on a piano education.
- 8:26>> Okay. There's no other education that
- 8:27you've sought like you haven't gone to
- 8:29university at this point in time.
- 8:31Jennifer Pan wasn't supposed to become
- 8:34the subject of one of Canada's most
- 8:36infamous mother cases. To everyone
- 8:39around her, she seemed almost perfect.
- 8:42She lived with her parents in an upper
- 8:45middle class suburb just outside
- 8:47Toronto.
- 8:49Her parents beach her pen and Hui Han
- 8:52Pen had immigrated from Vietnam. Like
- 8:56many immigrant parents, they believed
- 8:58education was everything. Success wasn't
- 9:01optional. It was expected. They worked
- 9:05tirelessly,
- 9:06hoping their children would have
- 9:08opportunities they never did. Jennifer
- 9:11was expected to excel. Every report card
- 9:15mattered. Every grade mattered. Every
- 9:18decision was watched carefully.
- 9:22Friends later described the pen
- 9:24household as loving but incredibly
- 9:28strict. Dating wasn't allowed. Late
- 9:31nights weren't allowed. Sleepovers
- 9:33weren't allowed. Freedom had to be
- 9:35earned. And Jennifer wanted something
- 9:38more than freedom. She wanted approval.
- 9:41As a child, Jennifer showed promise. She
- 9:44trained in piano. She competed in figure
- 9:47skating. She dreamed of becoming
- 9:49successful enough to make her parents
- 9:52proud. But somewhere during high school,
- 9:54that dream started slipping away. Her
- 9:56grades began to fall.
- 9:59The pressure didn't disappear.
- 10:02Instead, it grew heavier.
- 10:05And rather than telling her parents the
- 10:07truth, Jennifer made a decision that
- 10:09would quietly change everything.
- 10:12She started lying. At first, the lies
- 10:16were small, a slightly higher grade. A
- 10:20test she said had gone well. A class she
- 10:25claimed she had passed. Then the lies
- 10:28became larger, much larger. [music] She
- 10:31forged report cards. She created fake
- 10:34university acceptance letters. She
- 10:37invented scholarships.
- 10:40She even convinced her parents she was
- 10:42attending university when she wasn't.
- 10:45Every morning, Jennifer would leave home
- 10:48pretending to attend classes. Instead,
- 10:51she spent hours at libraries, coffee
- 10:53shops, or with her boyfriend. For years,
- 10:56her parents never knew
- 10:59Jennifer wasn't living two lives. She
- 11:02was living two completely different
- 11:05realities. And eventually, those
- 11:08realities were destined to collide.
- 11:11Every weekday, Jennifer Pan kissed her
- 11:14parents goodbye, picked up her backpack,
- 11:18and left home. To her parents, their
- 11:21daughter was on her way to college. She
- 11:24had earned admission. She was studying
- 11:27hard. Everything they had sacrificed for
- 11:30was finally paying off. But none of it
- 11:34was real. For nearly 2 years, Jennifer
- 11:38wasn't attending college at home.
- 11:41Instead, she spent her days in cafes,
- 11:45public libraries,
- 11:47shopping malls, and sometimes with the
- 11:50one person her parents had forbidden her
- 11:52to see, Daniel Wong. Jennifer and Daniel
- 11:56had met years earlier during high
- 11:58school. Unlike Jennifer,
- 12:01Daniel didn't fit the image her parents
- 12:03had imagined for her future. He had
- 12:06struggled in school. He had drifted into
- 12:09petty crime. Their relationship quickly
- 12:12became a source of conflict. [music]
- 12:16Jennifer's parents demanded she end it.
- 12:20According to evidence later presented in
- 12:22court, they believed Daniel would derail
- 12:25her future. Jennifer promised them that
- 12:29it was over.
- 12:31It wasn't. Instead, the relationship
- 12:34simply went underground.
- 12:37They communicated in secret. Late night
- 12:40phone calls, text messages, meetups
- 12:44arranged while Jennifer was supposedly
- 12:46studying. The more her parents tighten
- 12:49their control, the more Jennifer hid
- 12:52from them.
- 12:54But keeping one lie alive requires
- 12:57another, then another. Soon, Jennifer
- 13:00wasn't simply lying about Daniel. She
- 13:02was lying about everything.
- 13:05She told her parents
- 13:07she had been accepted into university.
- 13:10She hadn't. She told them she was
- 13:12earning excellent grades. She wasn't.
- 13:15She claimed to have won scholarships.
- 13:17They didn't exist. She even created fake
- 13:20report cards complete with convincing
- 13:23letterheads to make the deception
- 13:26believable. Jennifer carefully timed her
- 13:28daily routine. She left the house every
- 13:31morning, returned home in the evening,
- 13:34and talked casually about classes that
- 13:37never happened. Her parents never
- 13:39suspected a thing until
- 13:42one phone call. Eventually, someone from
- 13:45the university contacted the family. The
- 13:48truth began slipping through the cracks.
- 13:50[music] Questions started coming in.
- 13:53Jennifer's carefully constructed world
- 13:55began collapsing. When her parents
- 13:58discovered she had never graduated,
- 14:00[music] their trust shattered overnight.
- 14:03The consequences were immediate. They
- 14:05took away her phone, restricted her
- 14:08movement, monitored where she went,
- 14:11stopped allowing her see Daniel.
- 14:14Jennifer was now 24 years old. Yet,
- 14:16according to friends, she felt trapped
- 14:19like a teenager. She has spent years
- 14:23constructing an imaginary life. Now the
- 14:25illusion was gone. But instead of
- 14:28admitting the truth, you never made
- 14:30another choice. One far darker than all
- 14:34the lies before it.
- 14:36>> This is going to be where I'm going to
- 14:38ask you to start from the day, okay, on
- 14:42the 8th leading up until when you when
- 14:46the police become involved in an
- 14:48incident that takes place in your house.
- 14:49I want you to tell me about your day,
- 14:51what you do, your interaction with your
- 14:53parents.
- 14:55>> What I can remember is
- 14:57when I woke up, I had some breakfast
- 15:01and I went upstairs to do some piano
- 15:04history and I was on the computer.
- 15:07>> What time is that around?
- 15:14>> I'm not 100% sure. Time is it like is it
- 15:17you know time is important meaning is it
- 15:19is it in the beginning of the is it
- 15:21morning is the light out is in the
- 15:23afternoon like
- 15:24>> probably
- 15:25maybe before noon
- 15:27>> before noon sometime before noon
- 15:29>> yes
- 15:29>> okay
- 15:30>> before noon um
- 15:33I play some Facebook games so I was
- 15:36doing that and then I stopped and then I
- 15:39was doing some studying for my piano
- 15:42like I said I was working towards a
- 15:44piano degree and teaching ing. So, I was
- 15:47uh reading some history notes and going
- 15:50over some [music] practice examination
- 15:52papers.
- 15:55>> Who's in the house at that time?
- 15:57>> My father has left for work and my
- 15:59mother's home.
- 16:00>> Okay. Where's your mom? Do you know
- 16:02where she is?
- 16:09>> Don't remember at this point.
- 16:10>> Okay. I for I'm getting the last few
- 16:14days all mixed up together. Uh I believe
- 16:18she had left with my aunt to go and
- 16:22visit my grandfather that morning
- 16:24>> or early afternoon.
- 16:26Um he is residing [music]
- 16:30sorry he resides resided at a man
- 16:35nursing home and he had just gotten back
- 16:37from the hospital
- 16:40Saturday.
- 16:40>> Okay.
- 16:42>> So she went in I don't remember if she
- 16:44took my aunt but she went in to uh see
- 16:47if she could uh see how the nurse the
- 16:50nurse got any updates on him and see if
- 16:52she could feed him. Um when she had
- 16:56left, she had called me and she asked me
- 17:00to come out because there were some
- 17:02police officers on the street. And I
- 17:05went out and uh I asked the police
- 17:08officers came up and they said that
- 17:10there was a gas leak on our street and
- 17:13to exit our exit our house. So I said uh
- 17:17if it would be possible, could I go in
- 17:19and grab a jacket? Cuz I was still in
- 17:22just regular clothes.
- 17:24So, I went in and when I came out, my
- 17:26mother said that they wouldn't let her
- 17:28take out the car either. So, we were
- 17:29kind we decided to we were going to walk
- 17:32across the street to a relative's house
- 17:34there.
- 17:36And before we could get to our
- 17:37relative's house, uh the officers got a
- 17:40message or a memo from an from their
- 17:43fellow officers saying that our side was
- 17:45secure and that it might be from another
- 17:47area. So, from there, I went back into
- 17:50the house. Do you remember what time
- 17:51that was
- 17:54>> again? It was before noon.
- 17:55>> Before noon. Okay.
- 17:56>> I'm I'm I'm pretty sure it was before
- 17:59noon.
- 18:00>> So before noon. And now your mom's come
- 18:01back from
- 18:02>> No, not yet. She She's on She was
- 18:04>> leaving to go out. Okay.
- 18:07>> So she left to go pick up my aunt and go
- 18:11in to my grandfather's and I went back
- 18:13up to on the computer to do a little
- 18:16studying, taking a break, and playing
- 18:18some games.
- 18:21Um,
- 18:24whatever.
- 18:25>> Do you remember speaking to anyone
- 18:26during the day on your on your phone or
- 18:28on the on Facebook?
- 18:30>> Um,
- 18:33later on in the day, yes. I spoke to a
- 18:36longtime friend, Andrew, who I went to
- 18:37elementary school with. Um, but just the
- 18:42usual, he he just asked if we could uh
- 18:45hang out anytime soon, but I explained
- 18:47to him that I wasn't able to leave the
- 18:50house [music] and I couldn't meet up
- 18:51with him. So, I asked him how his life
- 18:54was, how his girlfriend, how his job was
- 18:56going. Um, I believe that was later on
- 18:59in the day though. That wasn't in the
- 19:01afternoon.
- 19:02>> We'll go in later in the when we talk
- 19:04about your past about why you couldn't
- 19:06leave the house. Okay. So, that isn't
- 19:08that hasn't gone unnoticed, but we're
- 19:10not going to talk about that right now.
- 19:11We're talking about that day.
- 19:12>> Okay.
- 19:13>> So, continue on.
- 19:15>> Um, I think my mom came home at about
- 19:203 or so. I'm not sure where she went
- 19:24with my aunt. She uh came home and
- 19:27unpacked and started preparing dinner.
- 19:31Um,
- 19:33my father came home
- 19:38My father came home about 4:20,
- 19:424:30. It was later than he usually does.
- 19:45He normally comes home about 10 to 4.
- 19:48Um, when my mother asked him where he
- 19:51had been, he had said he had forgotten
- 19:52to lock his toolbox at work or
- 19:57something about along the lines of he
- 19:59had to go back to work cuz he had
- 20:00forgotten to uh close something or lock
- 20:04something up. Where does your dad work?
- 20:06>> Um, Coobe and Stell. Um, it's
- 20:10Middlefield and
- 20:14South Fitch.
- 20:15>> Okay, continue. So, he comes, he's home
- 20:17now late at 4:20, 4:30.
- 20:19>> 4:30. And he phoned and asked my uncle
- 20:23Nam if he wanted to go to go buy some
- 20:27like heat covers and a USB pen.
- 20:32So, he immediately left. Not shortly
- 20:34after that, maybe 4:30, a little bit
- 20:37after that. And on Monday nights, my
- 20:39mother goes dancing. [music]
- 20:41So, she had finished dinner and me and
- 20:45her ate dinner first.
- 20:47>> What time did you guys have dinner
- 20:48around?
- 20:50>> 5 5:30.
- 20:51>> Mhm.
- 20:52>> And then she had then my father came
- 20:55home and he had dinner.
- 20:57>> And what time did your dad get home?
- 21:02I
- 21:05I'd say sometime between 6:00 and 6:30
- 21:08because my mother was able to clean up
- 21:10before going out to dancing.
- 21:12>> When your dad comes home, do you
- 21:14remember seeing what type of bags he was
- 21:15carrying when he came in?
- 21:17>> I I wasn't downstairs when he came
- 21:19through the door. I had gone upstairs
- 21:21already.
- 21:22>> Okay. So, you don't know where he went
- 21:24shopping at? Um, all I know is that when
- 21:26I came down to greet him after he had
- 21:28come home, he had shown me this uh
- 21:30heating cover that he had bought for the
- 21:33house.
- 21:34>> Didn't have a label on it. Didn't you
- 21:36didn't see
- 21:36>> He took it out of the bag or I He did He
- 21:38just showed me the the cover itself. He
- 21:41didn't like
- 21:43>> Did you see the USB stick?
- 21:44>> I believe the USB stick was for my
- 21:46uncle. If they bought it or not, I
- 21:48>> don't know.
- 21:48>> I'm not sure.
- 21:49>> Okay. So, it's now 6:00 to 6:30 cuz your
- 21:53dad's now home and eating and your mom
- 21:54said you say your mom cleans up.
- 21:56>> Yep. And then she leaves at 7:00 and my
- 21:59father goes up to his computer like he
- 22:01normally does.
- 22:02>> Yes.
- 22:02>> And he's on the computer watching like
- 22:04news. I'm not sure what he's doing. I'm
- 22:07in my room while I believe at this point
- 22:10I had called my friend.
- 22:12>> By the autumn of 2010, Jennifer Pan had
- 22:15run out of options. Her parents knew she
- 22:18had lied. They no longer trusted her.
- 22:21Her movements were monitored. She had
- 22:24little privacy. And according to
- 22:27evidence later presented in court, her
- 22:29relationship with Daniel Wong had become
- 22:32almost impossible to maintain.
- 22:36To Jennifer, it may have felt like her
- 22:39entire world was closing in. But the
- 22:42investigators would later argue that
- 22:45instead of accepting the consequences,
- 22:48she chose another path, one that would
- 22:51change several lives forever.
- 22:55Police would later uncover an unusual
- 22:57pattern. Jennifer wasn't just speaking
- 23:00to Daniel. She was also communicating
- 23:02with people connected to him. Amongst
- 23:04them, a man named Lenford Crawford
- 23:10and another named Eric Sniper Carti.
- 23:16As investigators pieced through the
- 23:19timeline, they believed these
- 23:21conversations were not random. According
- 23:24to the prosecutors,
- 23:26they were the early stages of mother
- 23:29conspiracy. Detectives already knew the
- 23:32answer. Phone records will later show
- 23:34connections that Jennifer insisted
- 23:37didn't exist. They weren't asking
- 23:40because they needed information. They
- 23:42were asking to measure the distance
- 23:44between Jennifer and the truth.
- 23:47Investigators believed the plan
- 23:50accelerated.
- 23:52Calls became more frequent. Meetings
- 23:54were allegedly arranged and according to
- 23:57court testimony,
- 23:59money was discussed.
- 24:01The alleged target was Jennifer's own
- 24:04parents. The plan, according to
- 24:07prosecutors, was simple. Late at night,
- 24:10men would enter the pan family home.
- 24:13Jennifer would appear to be another
- 24:15victim. [music] The mothers would look
- 24:17like a violent home invasion. Nothing
- 24:20would point back to her. If successful,
- 24:24Jennifer would inherit part of her
- 24:26parents' estates and perhaps the freedom
- 24:29she believed had been taken away from
- 24:32her. At least that was the prosecution's
- 24:34theory based on the evidence
- 24:37presented in court. No one outside that
- 24:41home had an idea what was about to
- 24:44happen. Inside, Jennifer's parents
- 24:47prepared for another ordinary evening.
- 24:50Her mother [ __ ] pen went to bed. Her
- 24:54father Hi and Penn was relaxing
- 24:56downstairs. [music] Jennifer waited. For
- 24:59months this was the version Jennifer
- 25:03wanted everyone to believe. The random
- 25:06home invasion, an unimaginable tragedy.
- 25:09But detectives will soon discover
- 25:12that one witness has survived and his
- 25:15memory would change everything.
- 25:18>> So we're back on track here. It's now
- 25:22you're back on the phone. You've come
- 25:23from the washroom, taken the mute button
- 25:24off, and you're now on the phone with
- 25:26Edward.
- 25:26>> Mhm.
- 25:28>> Where's your mom? Have you heard your
- 25:30mom come up the stairs? Is she still
- 25:31downstairs?
- 25:32>> She's still downstairs.
- 25:33>> She's still downstairs. Okay,
- 25:36continue on.
- 25:38>> I'm just I had my TV on cuz I was
- 25:40watching TV.
- 25:41>> Yes.
- 25:41>> Uh
- 25:44I don't remember what show I was
- 25:46watching. believe it was amazing amazing
- 25:50race. I'm I'm not 100% sure at this
- 25:53moment. Uh so I was watching TV and on
- 25:55the phone was Ed as well.
- 25:56>> Okay.
- 25:58>> And then
- 26:01I the next thing I remember is my mother
- 26:04calling down from my father.
- 26:07>> What is she saying? [music]
- 26:09>> She's calling him by his name and to
- 26:10come down.
- 26:12>> Okay. Does So give us verbatim what do
- 26:14you hear her saying? Is it in the
- 26:17Vietnamese Chinese or is it in English?
- 26:19>> It's in Vietnamese.
- 26:20>> Okay. And what do you hear her say
- 26:22>> in Vietnamese? It's like ho.
- 26:26>> And what does that translate to?
- 26:28>> Uh that's my father's name. Han, uh come
- 26:31down here.
- 26:32>> Does she say anything else associated
- 26:34with that with that?
- 26:36>> I can't hear clearly because like I was
- 26:39on the phone and the TV was on, but
- 26:41that's what I heard. Is she yelling or
- 26:44is it um normally
- 26:46>> it's a loud it's a she's not yelling but
- 26:48it's a loud tone.
- 26:49>> Okay.
- 26:50>> And normally that tone means that I need
- 26:53to go down and see what's happening
- 26:55usually. So that's when I told him I
- 26:58told Edward I was like okay I got to go.
- 26:59I'll call you later. And I hang up the
- 27:01phone with him.
- 27:02>> Have you heard anything else at this
- 27:04point in time?
- 27:05>> As I'm hanging up the phone with him I
- 27:07hear footsteps going up the stairs.
- 27:09>> Okay. But they're not
- 27:12they're heavier footsteps than what is
- 27:14to be expected from my parents.
- 27:17>> Okay.
- 27:18>> And then I hear mumbling and someone's
- 27:21in the master bedroom and I hear the bed
- 27:25being tossed and I just froze where I
- 27:27was.
- 27:30I have to say I don't know how long they
- 27:33were in there, but I heard somebody
- 27:37going down the stairs. So, at this
- 27:40point, I opened my door.
- 27:43I peered out, and there was a person
- 27:48in the my what would have been my
- 27:50brother's room.
- 27:51>> And where's your brother's room located?
- 27:53>> Uh, just a little bit down the like I
- 27:54could see my from my doorway to his
- 27:56doorway, just a little bit down the
- 27:58hall.
- 27:59>> Okay.
- 28:02and he looks at me and he pulls out his
- 28:03gun
- 28:06and he walks towards me and like sits me
- 28:09down on my bed cuz my bed is within a
- 28:12step from my door
- 28:15and he's like, "Where's the money? Do
- 28:17you have any money? Give me your money."
- 28:26So, I had some money that I had saved up
- 28:28from serving and I was also planning on
- 28:31buying a new cell phone cuz my contract
- 28:33was finishing with Rogers
- 28:37and the phone I'm currently using has
- 28:40not good reception. So, I had about
- 28:43$2,000
- 28:45saved up.
- 28:49And so, I opened my drawer and I pointed
- 28:52at it and he picked it up and took the
- 28:56cash and put it in his pocket.
- 29:03At this point, he ties my hands behind
- 29:05my back
- 29:08and he walks me out. Okay. So, stop
- 29:10right there for a second.
- 29:12Okay. I want you, now that you've got
- 29:14him right there, I want you to describe
- 29:16him to me. What you can remember,
- 29:19[music] every little detail.
- 29:27He's black dreadlocks.
- 29:32>> How long are the dreadlocks? They
- 29:34about
- 29:35>> show me on your on your on your own body
- 29:37where they where you would see
- 29:38>> about shoulder length.
- 29:40>> Okay.
- 29:40>> But they were long enough that they were
- 29:44able to move.
- 29:48>> Uh he's I would he's medium build and he
- 29:54is slight
- 29:57when [snorts] I was standing I was
- 29:59almost eye level with him.
- 30:03And you're how
- 30:04>> when you came up to me I'm about 5'7.
- 30:06>> Okay.
- 30:12>> Clothing.
- 30:12>> All I could remember is dark clothing.
- 30:20>> Now you got a you've got a gun pointed
- 30:23at you.
- 30:23>> Yes. Describe. And then he
- 30:24[clears throat] told Okay. Uh, the gun
- 30:28was black
- 30:31with [music] um almost
- 30:35not a triangle, but it
- 30:38kind of tapered a little on the handle.
- 30:43And I would describe it as like um what
- 30:46I see on TV for like police officers,
- 30:50kind of like like a like a handgun sort
- 30:53of thing.
- 30:56And the whole time he kept telling me to
- 30:59look down
- 31:02[music]
- 31:03cuz my bedroom was dark but the hallway
- 31:06was lit. So he kept telling me to look
- 31:08down. Look down
- 31:12at this point. [sighs]
- 31:14>> Any accent?
- 31:18>> Not from this particular person.
- 31:20>> Does he sound like he was born and
- 31:21raised in Canada?
- 31:25I'd say I would say that he was born in
- 31:28Canada, but
- 31:31like there was no sign of an accent in
- 31:33his
- 31:34>> and that's not what I mean culturally.
- 31:35I'm talking about the language. You
- 31:36know, you can tell someone who's spent a
- 31:39long time as a young age from starting
- 31:41because there there is no it's it's
- 31:43normal normal speech. Is that what
- 31:45you're saying?
- 31:46>> Yes. And at this point now he's behind
- 31:48me. He had grabbed me at the shirt and
- 31:52he had pulled me in front of him and uh
- 31:56was pushing me towards the stairs.
- 31:59>> Okay.
- 32:02>> What does he say?
- 32:04>> He keeps yelling, "Hurry up. Hurry up.
- 32:10Do what we're saying and no one will get
- 32:12hurt."
- 32:15>> Okay.
- 32:17>> [music]
- 32:24>> And then he takes me down the stairs
- 32:27and the lights on the main floor are all
- 32:30turned off.
- 32:33We take
- 32:38my stairs are a little curved and we
- 32:40just went he sat he made me push me down
- 32:45by my shoulders and told me to sit on
- 32:47the floor.
- 32:48>> Do you feel the gun? Is he using his
- 32:51hand?
- 32:51>> He's using his hand to lead me down the
- 32:54stairs and force me to sit down. Only
- 32:57one hand.
- 32:58>> Okay. You see the gun again?
- 33:01>> At this point, I'm looking down and he's
- 33:03behind me, so I don't see his gun.
- 33:06>> Um, but I can see there's two other
- 33:11shadows and I can see him.
- 33:15From where I was standing, my father was
- 33:17sitting on the right and my mother was
- 33:19sitting on the left.
- 33:20>> Sitting where?
- 33:21>> On a couch. On our couch.
- 33:24>> Sitting on the couch. Are they looking
- 33:26out towards you? No, their backs are
- 33:28towards me.
- 33:29>> Okay. And you're now on the ground
- 33:32level. Are you on the floor or on the
- 33:34sitting?
- 33:34>> I'm sitting on the floor. I'm sitting on
- 33:35the floor.
- 33:36>> All right. Where are your hands?
- 33:38>> They had tied my hands. As I said,
- 33:40>> let's go back up to the stairs. Remember
- 33:41we said take the other statement and
- 33:44whatever we've said before.
- 33:45>> No, I I said it earlier.
- 33:47>> Okay, then we must let's let's get back
- 33:48to that area. I think you might have
- 33:49touched on it. We went back into the
- 33:51description. So, where does where do you
- 33:53get your hands tied and where does the
- 33:54string come from?
- 33:56I'm not sure where the string comes
- 33:57from, but he had the string.
- 34:00>> Okay.
- 34:01>> And he after I gave him my money, that's
- 34:04when he tied my hands.
- 34:06>> And how did that happen? Where were you?
- 34:09In the room, in the hallway, where did
- 34:10that
- 34:10>> he told me to sit down on the edge of my
- 34:13bed?
- 34:14>> Yes. And that's when I opened he show he
- 34:18show told me showed show show me and I
- 34:21pulled open my my drawer my dresser and
- 34:25he saw the money and he picked it up my
- 34:29book and then he opened up the book and
- 34:30grabbed the cash put in his pocket.
- 34:32>> Okay.
- 34:35>> At this point he still has the gun
- 34:37pointing towards me
- 34:40and he
- 34:46You're doing great. You're doing
- 34:48fabulous. Okay. So, he's got the gun
- 34:51pointed at you.
- 34:55>> And how do the hands get behind your
- 34:57back?
- 34:57>> He told me to put my hands behind my
- 34:59back.
- 35:00>> Okay,
- 35:04continue.
- 35:15I believe he had
- 35:19[music]
- 35:22I'm sorry. I'm just trying to be 100%
- 35:24certain
- 35:25>> and it's just it's pieces that I'm
- 35:27>> then roll through them. We'll put the
- 35:29pieces together.
- 35:33[clears throat]
- 35:33>> I
- 35:35>> You've got the money out of the drawer.
- 35:36Open the drawer.
- 35:37>> Put it in his pocket. I'm sitting on my
- 35:38bed. Yes.
- 35:41>> And he had told me to put my hands
- 35:42behind my back.
- 35:44>> Okay.
- 35:47>> But it was dark.
- 35:50So I believe he told me to stand up so
- 35:53he could tie my hands together.
- 35:56And I was trying to
- 35:59make it loose so I could
- 36:02I could do something, but he had pulled
- 36:04them so tight.
- 36:07And he made sure I squealled before he
- 36:11[music]
- 36:12before he let go.
- 36:14>> Is your TV on?
- 36:16>> Okay.
- 36:16>> My TV's on the whole time.
- 36:18>> Okay.
- 36:22>> So, you've squealled. They're tight and
- 36:24they're behind your back.
- 36:26>> And that's when he grabs me and starts
- 36:27leading me down the stairs.
- 36:29>> Okay. Does he pat you down or search you
- 36:31or do anything?
- 36:32>> Thank goodness no cuz if he had pat me
- 36:34down, he would have found my phone.
- 36:36>> Okay. So you you're now down at the
- 36:39bottom of the stairs. You at this point
- 36:42in time you've only seen one person or
- 36:43have you seen the others before you get
- 36:45to the bottom of the stairs?
- 36:45>> Before I get to the bottom of the
- 36:46stairs, I had seen one person.
- 36:51>> Okay. So now you're at the bottom of the
- 36:53stairs.
- 36:54>> And he keeps telling these guys to hurry
- 36:55up. Hurry up. It's taking too long.
- 36:59And he he told me to look down, but I
- 37:04was able to
- 37:06see out of my peripheral.
- 37:14A man that I will call number three
- 37:17because I associated with him the least.
- 37:22He had a gun,
- 37:27pointed at my father,
- 37:30asking him if he had money in his wallet
- 37:35and where the money was in the house.
- 37:39And he asked my father how much he had
- 37:41in his wallet. And my father answered
- 37:43him, " $60." And he kept yelling, "You
- 37:46better not be lying to me. Is there
- 37:48more? Where is the rest?
- 37:53and
- 37:57another person who was hiding behind
- 38:00the wall in the kitchen. From where I
- 38:03stood, I couldn't see him at first.
- 38:06He had was asking my mother where her
- 38:08purse was.
- 38:10>> So, hang on a second. Who is this? Is
- 38:12this another another guy? Is this number
- 38:13a number? You've gone from a number one
- 38:15to a number three.
- 38:16>> Yes. I I call this guy number two.
- 38:18>> Okay. So number three, let's stick with
- 38:20number three. What What can you describe
- 38:22of him, if anything,
- 38:25including the gun?
- 38:28>> I can only see that there was a round
- 38:32kind of like a revolver.
- 38:35Sorry.
- 38:36>> That's okay.
- 38:37Remember, if you have to stop and take
- 38:39some deep breaths, it that really does
- 38:41help the process. any any interaction,
- 38:44any communication going on between you
- 38:46and number one and and number two while
- 38:47this is being while you're being bound?
- 38:50>> My mother's calling for me.
- 38:52>> Okay.
- 38:53>> And they keep saying
- 38:55that
- 38:57shut up. [music]
- 39:00>> Who's saying that to who?
- 39:02>> Number three is downstairs and she's
- 39:04telling her to shut up.
- 39:05>> She's telling her to shut up. What's
- 39:07your dad doing?
- 39:08>> I can't hear my father.
- 39:10>> Okay.
- 39:12>> [clears throat]
- 39:14>> You're now bound to this to the to the
- 39:16railing. Can you show me? Can you stand
- 39:19up and turn around and tell me just show
- 39:20on the camera how your hands are bound
- 39:24and how you are against the railing? You
- 39:26don't have to sit down. I just need to
- 39:27see how you work.
- 39:32[music]
- 39:35Can I just tell you? The only reason
- 39:38that I'm trying to I I need to do this
- 39:40is that I'm also going to ask you is
- 39:42that it's so take this back to from take
- 39:44it out of a traumatizing event, which it
- 39:46is, and put put yourself into a more
- 39:48clinical position because I want to see
- 39:50how you could physically get your phone
- 39:52out of your waistband. We're obviously
- 39:54going to need to know that. It's very
- 39:55important. So, traumatize a wide way.
- 39:58Now, put yourself into a just a state of
- 40:01I need to man mechanically show how I
- 40:04can get access to my phone. Okay?
- 40:06because that's obviously very relevant.
- 40:07I we know you made the phone call, but
- 40:10questions are going to obviously raise
- 40:12is that if my hands are bound and I'm
- 40:14against the railing, how do I talk to a
- 40:16911 operator? Okay, so clinically, this
- 40:19is now a clinical demonstration.
- 40:22Just stand up, focus in on how you did
- 40:25it,
- 40:31and I want you to stick that in your
- 40:32waistband as an example. Okay? So, take
- 40:35your just take your sweater off cuz this
- 40:36will be a very smooth, very quick thing.
- 40:38It's a one-time demonstration. I'm not
- 40:40going to ask you to repeat it, but I
- 40:42need to go through it. Okay? So, just
- 40:43take your sweater off.
- 40:54Stand up and turn around.
- 40:57Put this in the side that you believe it
- 40:58was in.
- 41:01Great. Turn around so that only you're
- 41:04looking away from me. You're looking
- 41:05exactly like now here is where the
- 41:08banister is. Put your hands back behind
- 41:10your back exactly how you remember they
- 41:12were.
- 41:13Okay. Now, and you are you restrained
- 41:16from movement? How far can you move your
- 41:18hands from the banister?
- 41:21>> They tied my upper arm.
- 41:24>> Yes.
- 41:24>> Around the banister?
- 41:25>> Yes.
- 41:26>> But my hands are bound together. So,
- 41:28your hands bound together and this is
- 41:29the arm that's the the strings wrapped
- 41:31around against the banister.
- 41:32>> Mhm.
- 41:33>> Okay. So, now how can you get to the
- 41:35phone?
- 41:39And how do you make the phone call?
- 41:44911.
- 41:45>> Mhm.
- 41:46>> And do you talk down like that?
- 41:48>> Yes. I'm yelling at the phone like this.
- 41:50>> And how can you hear?
- 41:53>> I turn the volume on max.
- 41:55>> Yes.
- 41:56So, that's exactly the way that you're
- 41:58talking to her against the railing.
- 42:01Mhm.
- 42:02>> Okay, that's good enough. Sit down. Put
- 42:03your sweater back on.
- 42:08>> You just put your sweater.
- 42:09>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:13You want to You want some more water?
- 42:16>> I'm okay.
- 42:17>> Okay. I really appreciate that.
- 42:19Obviously, it's very important to see it
- 42:21because we can't put you. It would be it
- 42:23would be absolutely physically
- 42:26impossible to put you back into the same
- 42:28position, but we just needed to see how
- 42:31you get the phone out and and make the
- 42:34call.
- 42:37[music]
- 42:42Okay. So, sit back, take a couple of
- 42:45deep breaths again.
- 42:53When you're when you're up against the
- 42:55railing and now you've been bound
- 42:58and
- 43:00is number two and number one still there
- 43:02or are they gone?
- 43:04>> Number one was there for a little bit.
- 43:06Number two ran up the stairs.
- 43:07>> What is number one's Is he saying
- 43:09anything to you? [music]
- 43:11He's saying you obeyed
- 43:16and just shut up and don't move.
- 43:22And he continues yelling downstairs,
- 43:24"Hurry up.
- 43:26Hurry up. It's taking too long. Hurry
- 43:28up."
- 43:35Now tell me something, okay? Which is
- 43:38kind of important.
- 43:41There's a safe in the house, is there
- 43:42not?
- 43:44[music]
- 43:47Safe is in a fairly visible place within
- 43:52within your parents' bedroom, is it not?
- 43:55It's
- 43:55>> inside their closet.
- 43:57>> Fairly visible accord at least from the
- 43:59pictures.
- 44:02>> Was there ever mention of wanting the
- 44:05combination to that safe?
- 44:11through any of the interaction of 1,
- 44:12two, and three, did they know that there
- 44:14was a safe in place?
- 44:17[music]
- 44:18>> I don't I I'm not aware if they knew.
- 44:23>> Okay.
- 44:24>> I didn't.
- 44:25>> So, you never heard any of them
- 44:26demanding the safe the the the um the
- 44:29combination to the safe?
- 44:35Was there anything else they were
- 44:36demanding in their yell yelling? It was
- 44:38was it was it what was the focus of what
- 44:40they were looking for?
- 44:42>> Cash.
- 44:43>> Cash.
- 44:47Okay. So, number one's talking to you.
- 44:50You obeyed
- 44:52[music] and we need to go. We need to
- 44:55go.
- 44:57[music]
- 44:58And where does he go from that point in
- 45:00time?
- 45:00>> He's yelling down the stairs.
- 45:04Is there more?
- 45:06And number two, I can just hear him
- 45:08muffling something. I I don't hear him
- 45:11clearly.
- 45:12>> Number two or number three?
- 45:14>> No, sorry. Number three. Number three.
- 45:17I'm sorry. Number three.
- 45:19>> Okay.
- 45:21>> It's just a myrr, but I can't I can't
- 45:24hear what he's saying.
- 45:26>> Okay.
- 45:32At this point, I start hearing my
- 45:34parents get up
- 45:36and they're moving and my mom's yelling,
- 45:39"Where's my daughter? I want my
- 45:40daughter. Where's my daughter?"
- 45:43And I'm yelling, "Mom, I'm here."
- 45:48Are they saying anything to your
- 45:49parents?
- 45:53>> I know she's yelling to you.
- 45:56>> Okay, she's she's yelling to you.
- 45:59Are they saying anything?
- 46:06>> Like, are they giving them directions as
- 46:08to where they're going?
- 46:11[music]
- 46:28or can you remember?
- 46:30>> All we can hear is my mom right now.
- 46:32>> Okay.
- 46:35>> So, you hear them get up and you're
- 46:37moving and they're moving to in what
- 46:38direction?
- 46:42>> Towards the basement.
- 46:44>> Okay.
- 46:46Are you still hearing one and two or one
- 46:48and three? Are you hearing all three of
- 46:49them?
- 46:51>> Number one.
- 46:52>> And what's he saying?
- 46:54>> Hurry up.
- 46:56Is there more?
- 47:06Okay.
- 47:08At this point, he throws my glasses.
- 47:14>> Then he walks down the stairs.
- 47:17>> So, he's still up there with you. When
- 47:19do you And and this So, you've had your
- 47:21glasses on the whole time. When does he
- 47:23take them off? Right before he leaves.
- 47:26>> Right after. So you're you're tied to
- 47:27the banister. You're just before he
- 47:30leaves to go down the stairs. Your
- 47:31glasses are off. You have had your
- 47:33glasses on the whole time prior to that.
- 47:35Okay.
- 47:40So now you hear your parents up and
- 47:42they're moving towards the basement. Do
- 47:44you What do you hear?
- 47:48>> Where's the rest of the money?
- 47:54Whose voice?
- 47:57>> The one with the Caribbean accent.
- 47:59>> Number three,
- 48:01who we've called number three.
- 48:03>> Yes.
- 48:03>> Where's the rest of the money?
- 48:05>> Is that as your as you hear your parents
- 48:07moving?
- 48:08>> I can hear them stepping down the
- 48:09stairs.
- 48:10>> Okay.
- 48:13Then after number one joins them after
- 48:17he took my glasses.
- 48:19>> You heard him go down the stairs as
- 48:21well.
- 48:22>> Number one then left me.
- 48:24>> Yes.
- 48:24>> And he went down the stairs and I asked
- 48:27my mom was still calling for me and I
- 48:29wanted to go and he says no.
- 48:36It should have taken me.
- 48:37>> Okay, hang on a second. [music]
- 48:40Hang on.
- 48:43So number you hear number one say no to
- 48:46your response to your demand of wanting
- 48:48to go. Do you hear the questions coming
- 48:50or your mom saying where is she? Where
- 48:52is she? Are she starting to make her Are
- 48:54they starting to go down to the
- 48:55basement? Are they on the stairs leading
- 48:57to the basement?
- 48:59Can you hear I'm I'm going to ask you to
- 49:02focus in because it's very difficult.
- 49:03I'm going to ask you to focus in. Are
- 49:05you hearing all of them going
- 49:06downstairs?
- 49:09Can you hear that many footsteps? That's
- 49:11five sets of steps.
- 49:15[music]
- 49:20Cuz if your mom is moving down to the
- 49:22basement with these guys and number one
- 49:23is walking down to join them, he would
- 49:25be he would be later. He he would be
- 49:27walking down. Does he go down to the
- 49:29basement or do you know?
- 49:34Can't tell.
- 49:39Here,
- 49:40>> Jennifer, take a Kleenex
- 49:43and just
- 49:45take a minute. [music]
- 50:01Okay, so we're now down in the basement.
- 50:04They're down in the you know your
- 50:05parents are down in the basement. You
- 50:06don't know who's down there with them.
- 50:09You can't tell how many people went
- 50:10down. You know that number one left and
- 50:13was heading in down in that direction,
- 50:15but you don't know by footsteps who's
- 50:18down there.
- 50:19>> Pay attention.
- 50:19>> That's all right. Whose voices can you
- 50:22hear now down in the basement?
- 50:28>> [music]
- 50:29>> I can just remember number three saying
- 50:33you lied. There's more. Where is it? You
- 50:36lied.
- 50:38You're lying.
- 50:45Okay. And then what do you hear?
- 51:09I hear a
- 51:14heard pop
- 51:17and then my mom. I heard her squeal.
- 51:21So, do you hear one pop or do you hear
- 51:22two?
- 51:24>> That's what I can't remember.
- 51:25>> Then don't it's it's one or two. Okay.
- 51:29And then you hear your mom squeal.
- 51:33And then what do you hear?
- 51:40Another one or two pops up.
- 51:42>> Do you hear any voices in between other
- 51:44than your mom squealing? Do you hear
- 51:45number three say anything? All
- 51:46>> I can remember is like calling for her.
- 51:49>> Okay.
- 51:53Don't apologize. Okay? This is nothing
- 51:56to feel to apologize to me for. This is
- 51:58something that you're trying to
- 51:59remember. So, you heard a pop. You heard
- 52:02your mom squeal and then you heard
- 52:05another.
- 52:07Any idea how many more pops you heard?
- 52:12>> I just remember that I heard one or two
- 52:14and then there was a slight break.
- 52:19And there was one more.
- 52:23I don't remember if it was two and then
- 52:24break and then one or if it was one and
- 52:26then break and then one. Okay. So,
- 52:29you're saying that you heard a total of
- 52:31how many pops? Guessing.
- 52:39>> Four or five.
- 52:40>> Four or five. Okay. So, you hear after
- 52:44those pops, popping noises,
- 52:47what do you hear? After the last popping
- 52:49noise you've heard, what do you hear?
- 52:51>> That's it.
- 52:55It's too long. Let's go from number one.
- 52:59>> That's it. It's too long. Let's go.
- 53:02Okay.
- 53:05I just hear a bunch of foots going.
- 53:12>> Does it sound like they're obviously
- 53:13coming? Does it sound coming up the
- 53:15stairs? Do you know where they leave?
- 53:22The official story seemed unbelievable
- 53:25until police spoke with the only
- 53:28survivor,
- 53:29Jennifer's father. She remembered
- 53:33something that detectives never
- 53:35expected,
- 53:37something that made investigators
- 53:39question whether Jennifer had ever been
- 53:41a victim at all. According to evidence
- 53:44presented in court, three men entered
- 53:47the Penn family home. Within moments,
- 53:50the quiet house erupted into chaos.
- 53:54Jennifer later told police that
- 53:56strangers forced their way inside. She
- 54:00claimed they had tied her hands behind
- 54:02her back, dragged her through the house,
- 54:04and demanded money. That observation
- 54:07alone wasn't proof of anything, but was
- 54:09the beginning of a much larger pattern.
- 54:12Then came another discovery. Expensive
- 54:14jewelry still inside the house, cash,
- 54:17untouched electronics left behind. If
- 54:21robbery had been the motive, why had
- 54:23nothing valuable disappeared? The scene
- 54:26didn't fit. It wasn't impossible. just
- 54:28unusual. Every answer investigators
- 54:31found created another question and then
- 54:34they interviewed the only survivor.
- 54:37Jennifer's [music] father
- 54:39and Penn had been shot in the face.
- 54:42Doctors weren certain he would survive.
- 54:44For days, he couldn't tell investigators
- 54:46what had happened. But once he regained
- 54:48consciousness, his memory became one of
- 54:51the most important pieces of evidence in
- 54:52the entire case. Something that
- 54:54completely changed the direction of the
- 54:57investigation. According to
- 54:59investigators, he said Jennifer had not
- 55:02been taken upstairs like she claimed.
- 55:05She had been downstairs moving freely.
- 55:08Detectives now had two completely
- 55:11different versions of the same night.
- 55:14One from Jennifer, another from her
- 55:16father.
- 55:16>> Text message.
- 55:19You go down, you do the door, you go
- 55:21back upstairs, and what do you do?
- 55:24>> Call him.
- 55:26>> Okay. Hey, why do you call him?
- 55:28>> What I usually do.
- 55:30>> Okay.
- 55:32What were you expecting to happen next?
- 55:36>> I honestly I don't know
- 55:40because he didn't tell me. He didn't let
- 55:42me do anything. I didn't know how he was
- 55:44going to do anything.
- 55:45>> Okay. What else did he say on the phone?
- 55:46Like how like he must have told you
- 55:48we're around the corner or something?
- 55:50>> No.
- 55:52>> Did he tell you how long?
- 55:54>> No.
- 55:55>> Okay. But it was on for that night. He
- 55:57had game on on the text.
- 55:58>> Yes.
- 55:59>> Okay. What did you do with those text
- 56:01messages?
- 56:06>> Okay. And the phone that you were using,
- 56:08were you using two phones that night?
- 56:10>> Yeah.
- 56:11>> Okay. You have to sit up cuz I can't
- 56:13hear you here. You were using two
- 56:15phones. Okay. So, the phone you were
- 56:17talking to with Andrew on was what
- 56:19phone?
- 56:21>> And the one you were talking to them on
- 56:23was what?
- 56:23>> The iPhone. the iPhone. Okay. And then
- 56:30uh did you ever talk to them on the
- 56:32Samsung?
- 56:33>> No.
- 56:33>> Okay.
- 56:35Now,
- 56:37um
- 56:39what next?
- 56:43Everything else that happened next.
- 56:46>> Okay. Now
- 56:49look at me, Jen.
- 56:52You're almost there.
- 56:54Okay.
- 56:56Most of what happened in the house
- 56:58happened. Okay. We know that. Okay.
- 57:01You gave a description of [music] a
- 57:03black guy with dreads. There was no
- 57:04black guy with dreads in there. Okay. We
- 57:06know that. Okay. We know that cuz your
- 57:10dad's not going to miss that. Okay. He
- 57:12gave a good description of the guy that
- 57:14you were with and he's not even black.
- 57:16So tell me about that.
- 57:18>> Honestly, like
- 57:19>> honestly, Jen, that's exactly You got to
- 57:21be upfront here.
- 57:23Because obviously you didn't want to
- 57:25tell us everything because there was a
- 57:26plan. You didn't tell us that that night
- 57:28either.
- 57:29>> Okay. So
- 57:30>> everything else that happened after that
- 57:32is
- 57:32>> that guy with dreadlocks was never
- 57:34there. Okay. So why did you say that?
- 57:38>> But that's what I remember.
- 57:39>> Okay. You can't mix that guy up with the
- 57:42description your dad gave. You're not
- 57:43even the same color.
- 57:46Right.
- 57:47>> But that's
- 57:48>> Tell me why you said guy with
- 57:49dreadlocks. Because that's who I am.
- 57:51>> Because there was no guy with dreadlocks
- 57:53there, Jen.
- 57:55That's the problem here. Okay.
- 58:00That's the problem. Okay. Now, the issue
- 58:03here is this. And you have to look at
- 58:05me. Okay? Your dad wasn't supposed to be
- 58:08a witness. Okay? That's where this whole
- 58:12thing went wrong. Okay? Your dad wasn't
- 58:15supposed to live. Okay? And when he did
- 58:18live, he was able to tell us what really
- 58:20happened that night. Okay. Which was in
- 58:24conflict with what you told us. Okay.
- 58:28Seriously in conflict. Okay. You had all
- 58:30these things about number two going
- 58:32upstairs and everything else. Number two
- 58:34was down there with a gun on your mom.
- 58:36Number three was down. He didn't. Okay.
- 58:38We know that never happened. Okay. I
- 58:40don't want to argue about it. Okay. I'm
- 58:42not going to argue.
- 58:42>> But I've already gone this far. You've
- 58:44gone this far, but that doesn't mean
- 58:46Okay. What? Now, let's get it all
- 58:48straightened out because you This is a
- 58:51total half and half. We're We're there
- 58:54again. Just like the school, just like
- 58:56everything else, this is how you deal
- 59:00with pressure. Okay. What people don't
- 59:03understand is when people tell
- 59:04half-truths, they recognize it right
- 59:06away. They recognize that that's not
- 59:09what really happened. Okay. That's not
- 59:11what really happened. Okay, you've spent
- 59:15a lifetime trying to get around people
- 59:18and all it has ever done is hurt you
- 59:20more, Jen.
- 59:23You missed out on an education because
- 59:26[music] you tried to fake it. Okay?
- 59:30You missed out on things that made you
- 59:32want to kill yourself.
- 59:34And you realize that and it reached a
- 59:37low point to the point where if you
- 59:40don't care about yourself, you can't
- 59:41care about other people.
- 59:44You know what I mean? You can't care for
- 59:46other people if you can't love yourself.
- 59:49And that's where this got to, Jen.
- 59:52And I don't blame you, but we need to
- 59:55understand this together, right?
- 59:59We need to have a resolution here.
- 1:00:04Okay.
- 1:00:11Stuck. Okay.
- 1:00:16Can we understand each other, Jen? Okay.
- 1:00:20>> You've told so much of the truth. You're
- 1:00:22just not telling the final portion. This
- 1:00:24isn't even half truths anymore. This is
- 1:00:27three quarters. Okay. The only thing
- 1:00:29missing is a quarter of the truth. Okay.
- 1:00:33The rest is true. Okay, we know that.
- 1:00:36Okay, we know you got the text.
- 1:00:40[music] We know that you gave the
- 1:00:41go-ahad.
- 1:00:43Okay, but the go-ahad wasn't for
- 1:00:46yourself. That's what's that issue here,
- 1:00:48Jen. So, we're going to sit down here
- 1:00:51and work through this together. Okay,
- 1:00:53we're going to work this out.
- 1:00:58We're going to get the full truth
- 1:00:59because you know what?
- 1:01:01The full truth is only 100%.
- 1:01:05Not 75%, not 90, not 99.
- 1:01:10100%. Everything that really happened
- 1:01:12that night.
- 1:01:15Okay, Jen.
- 1:01:18All right,
- 1:01:19let's do it together. Okay, you did.
- 1:01:21>> I don't understand why it doesn't add
- 1:01:23up.
- 1:01:24>> Why it doesn't add up is because that's
- 1:01:26not what happened. Okay.
- 1:01:30The truth will add up.
- 1:01:33Half truths don't add up. That's all
- 1:01:36they ever are is half truths.
- 1:01:39I need you to listen close to me. Okay,
- 1:01:41Jen.
- 1:01:43At this point in the investigation,
- 1:01:45okay?
- 1:01:47I'm going to be arresting you for
- 1:01:48murder. Okay? Also, attempted murder and
- 1:01:53conspiracy to commit murder. Do you
- 1:01:56understand that?
- 1:01:59Just have to tell me if you understand
- 1:02:01those charges. Just say yes or no. Yes.
- 1:02:05Okay. It is my duty to inform you that
- 1:02:08you have the right to retain and
- 1:02:10instruct counsel without delay. Do you
- 1:02:13understand that?
- 1:02:15And what does that mean to you?
- 1:02:19>> Yes. Okay.
- 1:02:22You also have the right to telephone any
- 1:02:24lawyer your wish. Do you understand
- 1:02:26that?
- 1:02:27Yes.
- 1:02:29You also have the right to free advice
- 1:02:31from a legal aid lawyer.
- 1:02:34Do you understand that?
- 1:02:361 800265451
- 1:02:40is a toll-free number. You have to
- 1:02:42listen here. So, can you take your hands
