- 0:02You look fantastic. -Thank you.
- 0:03-We love you. -Tell me if my arm looks fat.
- 0:07[ Cheers and applause ] -Never. Never.
- 0:09-Okay. -I missed you.
- 0:10You know, I haven't seen you in eight years.
- 0:12-Eight years?
- 0:14-It's been eight years since you've been on the show,
- 0:15which is -- so many great things have happened.
- 0:17You're married, you have two kids.
- 0:19-Yeah. -How's the family?
- 0:20How's everything? -Everybody's good.
- 0:22I mean, I think -- Everybody's alive, and I'm...
- 0:25[ Laughter ] -Great to hear.
- 0:27-I'm -- I'm nervous. I'm very nervous.
- 0:29-Why?
- 0:31-I always get nervous with these things
- 0:32I think because I've been, like,
- 0:34watching them since I was little.
- 0:35So it's like a talk show. I watch this.
- 0:38And so I'm like -- -You're good at this.
- 0:39You've done this. You're doing --
- 0:41-Not in eight years. -Oh, stop, though.
- 0:44You know what's so funny? I was gonna say, every time
- 0:46you do the -- you're doing press now for this movie.
- 0:48Congratulations on it. "Die My Love,"
- 0:50in theaters Friday. [ Cheers and applause ]
- 0:54Everything -- [ Both laugh ]
- 0:56Everything you say kind of gets picked up in the press.
- 1:00-It's so -- I'm so annoying. I --
- 1:03[ Laughter ] -You are not.
- 1:05I did an interview where they were like, you know,
- 1:08"Everybody thought you were annoying,"
- 1:09or I said I was annoying. I don't remember how it started.
- 1:11-Yes, I saw this. -But I was like --
- 1:13But I was like, "Yeah." Like, I was hyper, and I was,
- 1:15you know -- and I was annoying.
- 1:16And then, the Internet, the sweet Internet --
- 1:20I never said that before -- [ Laughter ]
- 1:22was just like rushed to my support and was like,
- 1:25"You're not annoying!
- 1:26We never thought you were annoying!"
- 1:28But that is annoying because I, like,
- 1:29weaponized my experience to make everybody, like...
- 1:34-Stick up for me. -...to stick up for me.
- 1:35And I'm like, "Oh, my God, that is so annoying!"
- 1:38Like, just -- just -- I am annoying,
- 1:40and I am okay with that. -Okay.
- 1:43-And I don't want anybody to...
- 1:45-Stick up for you. -...say anything.
- 1:46-Okay. We're not -- [ Laughter ]
- 1:48I don't know how I'm gonna do the rest of this interview.
- 1:50Okay. -Thank you.
- 1:51I don't -- I'm not gonna say a [bleep] word.
- 1:53-No, you have -- no, you have to say something!
- 1:55It's me that can't. -Okay. Sorry.
- 1:57-Uh, is that type of language gonna be in --
- 1:59-Freakin'. -Thank you.
- 2:00[ Laughter ]
- 2:02There's the new film that I saw that you and...
- 2:04-No, it's completely gitty. -Cole Escola and Emma Stone.
- 2:06-Oh, "Miss Piggy." -"Miss Piggy."
- 2:08I heard you're working on maybe a possible film
- 2:12about Miss Piggy. -I am.
- 2:14So... [ Cheers and applause ]
- 2:15-That sounds great.
- 2:17-Thank you. So, during, um, lockdown,
- 2:21one of my good friends, who's not in the industry, was like --
- 2:24It was also kind of around cancel culture.
- 2:26It was like both things were kind of happening at once.
- 2:28We were all locked up in our rooms.
- 2:31-And getting -- -Naughty people were being
- 2:32locked up in prison. -Yes, yes, yes, that's true.
- 2:35-And she was like, "Miss Piggy is a feminist icon."
- 2:39And she said, you know, it would be so funny
- 2:42if Miss Piggy got canceled.
- 2:43Now, that is not the plot, necessarily,
- 2:46but it got the wheels turning of, like, "Wait. There..."
- 2:50-Your friend is very funny. -"...hasn't actually been, like,
- 2:51a feminist -- like, a Miss Piggy starring in this movie."
- 2:55So I was -- I started kind of producing it.
- 2:59But Emma Stone is the Muppet-head.
- 3:03Also, Emma Stone is a shark.
- 3:05I am not -- Emma Stone, like, will turn around, like,
- 3:08in a leather jacket with a cigar and be like, "Hey, kid,
- 3:11let me tell you a thing or two about Hollywood."
- 3:13-Yeah, yeah, okay. -I'm, like, the ideas guy.
- 3:15-Yes, and you go -- Yeah.
- 3:17-So I went to her to be like, "What do we do?"
- 3:19-Yeah. -"How do we do this?
- 3:20Lead the charge."
- 3:22So now Cole is writing it, and they're perfect.
- 3:24Um, and, yeah. -That is so fun.
- 3:26And you'll be in it, as well? -Yeah, I think so.
- 3:28Yeah. I mean, I have to be. So, yes.
- 3:29[ Laughter ] I mean, I want to be.
- 3:31-All right. So that movie we'll look forward to.
- 3:33But now let's talk about the movie
- 3:34that we can see this Friday, "Die My Love."
- 3:36Congratulations on this. This is based on a book.
- 3:39And how did you hear about this?
- 3:41-Well, um, I've told this story before, so --
- 3:43-That's why I wanted to ask. -I know, but just, like,
- 3:46fast-forward or don't watch it or something.
- 3:47I don't know. Um...
- 3:49-No, I like this story. -Martin Scorsese was like,
- 3:52"I read this book in my book club," and I was like, "What?"
- 3:56-Yes! -That is so sweet.
- 3:58And he was like, "I think you'd be great in it."
- 4:01And, you know -- and then I read it and, like,
- 4:03I didn't get it at first.
- 4:05I mean, it was, like -- it was an incredible role,
- 4:08very, you know, "Woman Under the Influence,"
- 4:10very Cassavetes. -Yeah.
- 4:11-But it was all told from her perspective,
- 4:14so I kind of didn't figure out --
- 4:16I couldn't figure out how to, like, crack it as a film,
- 4:18but I didn't want to, like, call Marty
- 4:19and be like, "I didn't get it." [ Laughter ]
- 4:21-Yeah, he's Martin Scorsese, yeah.
- 4:22-Yeah, yeah, yeah. So then I sat with it
- 4:24for a while, realized, you know, it's not literal.
- 4:27And, uh, Lynne Ramsay is somebody who I've always
- 4:29wanted to work with.
- 4:30So, basically, she cracked it, and she's a genius.
- 4:32-She cracked it. Boy, she cracked it.
- 4:34-I can't believe I'm still talking.
- 4:36-No. What are you saying? [ Laughter ]
- 4:37Uh, you -- you actually. -[ Mock crying ]
- 4:39-No. Stop crying. Stop crying!
- 4:42No, this is fun! -[ Mock crying continues ]
- 4:44-You're having fun on a talk show!
- 4:46Stop crying. -Okay.
- 4:47-Yes, trust me, this is fun.
- 4:49-Okay.
- 4:51[ Laughter ]
- 4:52-Robert Pattinson plays your husband.
- 4:55-Yeah. -Yeah.
- 4:56Was that your idea to cast him?
- 4:57-[ Laughs ] Yeah.
- 4:59[ Laughter, cheers, applause ]
- 5:03-Why not? -No, he's so --
- 5:04-Why not? -Yeah. No, this was actually --
- 5:06This is actually how you know you're working with,
- 5:08like, a god auteur.
- 5:09Every single person who was our first choice
- 5:12in casting said yes. -Did it?
- 5:14-Like, Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte, Robert Pattinson,
- 5:17Lakeith. Like, it was -- -Lakeith Stanfield.
- 5:19-I've never dealt with that. As a -- heh -- producer,
- 5:22I've never dealt with just like, you know, our A-plus choice.
- 5:25I have a funny producing story.
- 5:27-Tell. -Um, so, in Canada,
- 5:30we speak mostly the same language,
- 5:32but there are like... -I think we do, yeah.
- 5:35-Well, yeah, but like, there are certain
- 5:36words that would get confused.
- 5:38So, in Canada, they call the trailer your room.
- 5:43And so we call trailers "trailers"
- 5:45'cause they're trailers. -Yeah.
- 5:46-And we call our room, like the hotel room
- 5:48that we're living in for months. -Yeah.
- 5:49-So when my producing partner got a text
- 5:52from our line producer that was like,
- 5:55"These three background kids have nowhere to stay.
- 5:59Like, can they use your room?"
- 6:01And she's thinking my hotel room that I live in.
- 6:04Like, three kids?
- 6:06[ Stammering ] [ Laughter ]
- 6:08Is that uninsurable? Like, I...
- 6:10-Yeah, it sounds illegal, yeah. -Yeah.
- 6:12And so she's like, "Well, geez, I don't know.
- 6:15Like, all my stuff's in there."
- 6:17And the line producer's, like, getting more
- 6:18and more flabbergasted.
- 6:19He's like, "I'll help you move your stuff!"
- 6:21And she's like, "I don't know. I mean --"
- 6:23And then, finally he, like, throws his hands up,
- 6:25and he's like, "Fine! I'll ask Lynne!", the director.
- 6:27And we're like, "No! Don't ask the director
- 6:29to move out of her home." -Yeah.
- 6:31Like, "Okay." -"We'll figure this out."
- 6:33-Like, this whole back-and-forth where he thinks we're crazy.
- 6:36We obviously think he's crazy. -Yeah.
- 6:38-Um, and then it was -- It was just a misunderstanding.
- 6:40[ Mock crying ] -Oh, my gosh.
- 6:44Unbelievable. Unbeliev-- You're unbelievable.
- 6:48I hear that you and Robert Pattinson had to do,
- 6:50like, a dance class together to kind of get to know each other.
- 6:54Like, an interpretive dance?
- 6:55-Interpretive dance.
- 6:57So the director was like, you know --
- 6:59We actually didn't know each other.
- 7:00I mean, we're like actors, so we've, like, seen each other,
- 7:03but we did not know each other.
- 7:05And so we got there to Canada a few weeks --
- 7:08In Canada, we had to learn how to speak Canadian.
- 7:11Um... [ Laughter ]
- 7:12-It's the same -- It's the same language.
- 7:15-It's really not. -I know, I know.
- 7:17-I can tell you've never filmed in El Canada.
- 7:20-El Canada. [ Laughter ]
- 7:22-Um, so, anyway, um, she made us do interpretive dance.
- 7:26It was very embarrassing.
- 7:27-How is he as a dancer? -Better than you.
- 7:29He didn't abandon me. [ Audience exclaims ]
- 7:32I mean, I'm sure nobody remembers, but...
- 7:34-We danced together. -But we danced together.
- 7:36-Yeah, we had a great time dancing together.
- 7:37-We saw J.Lo. -We wanted to dance with her.
- 7:41-We wanted to dance with J.Lo. -Yeah. We were like,
- 7:43"Let's go ask her to dance." -Yeah.
- 7:44-"Dance." -Come on, dance with us.
- 7:46-"Why wouldn't she wanna dance with us?"
- 7:47-"Dance with us!"
- 7:49-And then we had choreographed a little spin.
- 7:51-That's right. -And then I did the spin...
- 7:52-I was gonna spin you into J.Lo.
- 7:54-And you did start to spin me. Like, you spun me.
- 7:57And then we were both gonna go, "Dance with us."
- 7:59-That's correct. -And then, I turn around.
- 8:01You were not there. -I spun you, and I left.
- 8:04-I think you left the whole party.
- 8:06-I left. I went home. -Yeah.
- 8:08-I was like -- [ Mock cries ]
- 8:09-So anyway, Rob stayed. -"Rob stayed."
- 8:12-And I always knew when he was leaving.
- 8:13-Gosh, you get to call him "Rob"?
- 8:15-Yeah. Sometimes I even call him "Bob."
- 8:17-"Bob"? -Yeah.
- 8:19-Bob Pattinson. -Bob Pattinson.
