- 0:44by the magnitude of the crime no one had
- 0:47a clue as to what was happening for for
- 0:49over a decade how could this shy child

- 1:17no doubt I probably would be
- 1:19[Music]
- 1:28hello I'm Bill O'Reilly thanks for
- 1:29watching this very special Inside
- 1:31Edition How could a normal looking man
- 1:33with normal parents and a normal job
- 1:35commit some of the most brutal crimes
- 1:38the world has ever seen Jeffrey Dahmer
- 1:40has never talked publicly about killing
- 1:4217 people until now Nancy Glass is here
- 1:46with a very chilling interview Nancy
- 1:48first set the scene for us what
- 1:50impression does Dahmer give when you
- 1:51first meet him well Bill surprisingly he
- 1:54is very articulate and when he is
- 1:56talking you can see how he was able to
- 1:59manipulate his victims and how he was
- 2:01able to get away with it for so long he
- 2:04also talks about his horrendous crimes
- 2:06in great detail but in a very clinical
- 2:09Manner and you realize that none of it
- 2:11has touched him cold matter of fact yes
- 2:14and Nancy will be back in just a few
- 2:16moments with the first part of her
- 2:18interview
- 2:19it was almost addictive a surge of
- 2:22energy we wouldn't have to worry about
- 2:26any of their needs or anything I just
- 2:29had complete control of the situation
- 2:33he is 32 years old and he is pure evil
- 2:37but you'd never know it by looking at
- 2:38him but when you hear him that's another
- 2:40story his killing field was Milwaukee
- 2:43and he got away with murder for more
- 2:45than a decade but how could any of this
- 2:47happen for the first time ever Nancy
- 2:49Glass is here inside the world of
- 2:51Jeffrey Dahmer bill when I sat down
- 2:53opposite Jeffrey Dahmer for this
- 2:55interview I wondered what he would tell
- 2:57me how hard it would be to get him to
- 2:59discuss his horrific crimes what I found
- 3:02was that he was very forthcoming he
- 3:04volunteered details that may be
- 3:06difficult to hear I began by asking what
- 3:09he wanted from the men he picked up
- 3:12they had these obsessive desires and and
- 3:16Thoughts wanting to control them
- 3:19to uh
- 3:23I don't know how to put it uh
- 3:25possess them permanently and that's why
- 3:27you killed them right
- 3:29right not because I was angry with them
- 3:31not because they hated them but because
- 3:34I wanted to keep them with me
- 3:37and as my obsession grew
- 3:43I was saving body parts such as skulls
- 3:48and uh skeletons Jeffrey Dahmer is
- 3:51recalling his monstrous past almost two
- 3:54years ago in this little apartment in
- 3:56Milwaukee Police discovered the grisly
- 3:59remnants of one of the most horrible
- 4:01crime sprees in American history Jeffrey
- 4:04Dahmer an unassuming chocolate factory
- 4:06worker would eventually confess that he
- 4:09had seduced murdered and dismembered 17
- 4:12young men he even ate some of his
- 4:15victims body parts
- 4:17he instantly became the center of
- 4:19worldwide media attention a serial
- 4:22killer unmasked
- 4:25there were protests and press
- 4:27conferences in Milwaukee as people tried
- 4:29to understand how this could have
- 4:31happened in their midst how did Jeffrey
- 4:34Dahmer get away with murder after murder
- 4:36for 13 years how did a boy born into a
- 4:40hard-working middle-class family turn
- 4:43into the worst kind of monster
- 4:45imaginable in this exclusive interview
- 4:47we put those questions to Jeffrey Dahmer
- 4:50himself we met with him at the Maximum
- 4:53Security Prison where he is serving his
- 4:55sentence of 999 years for the first time
- 4:59he talks about his crimes and gives us a
- 5:02chilling look inside the mind of a
- 5:05serial killer
- 5:07it's a process it doesn't happen
- 5:08overnight
- 5:10when you
- 5:12de-personalize another person and view
- 5:15them as just an object
- 5:18an object for pleasure instead of a
- 5:20living breathing human being
- 5:25it it
- 5:27seems to make it easier
- 5:32do things you shouldn't do the reason
- 5:34why Jeffrey Dahmer was able to get away
- 5:36with his crimes was because of just what
- 5:39you are seeing here Jeffrey Dahmer is
- 5:42intelligent and articulate that is what
- 5:44makes him so frightening but if you
- 5:46listen carefully to his words throughout
- 5:49this interview you realize it is a thin
- 5:52disguise you do sound though like the
- 5:55kind of person who could have said to
- 5:56himself
- 5:57is wrong I must stop
- 6:01I always knew that that it was wrong but
- 6:04uh
- 6:06after the the first
- 6:10the first uh killing was not planned
- 6:13I was uh
- 6:15coming back from the shopping mall back
- 6:17in 78
- 6:19I had had uh fantasies about picking up
- 6:22a hitchhiker
- 6:24and uh taking him back to the house and
- 6:28having complete control and dominance
- 6:30over him The Hitchhiker's name was
- 6:33Stephen Hicks he was just 18. Jeffrey
- 6:37Dahmer took him to his parents house
- 6:39there he strangled him with a barbell he
- 6:42dismembered the body and hid it in a
- 6:43drain pipe it was Jeffrey Dahmer who
- 6:46gave those details to the police in his
- 6:49confession
- 6:50no one no one had a clue as to what was
- 6:53happening for for over a decade during
- 6:56that time Jeffrey Dahmer joined the army
- 6:58and was sent to Germany he was
- 7:00eventually discharged for a drinking
- 7:02problem and returned to Ohio nine years
- 7:05after Stephen Hicks murder The Killing
- 7:08began again what happened to you in the
- 7:11nine years in between that you were able
- 7:13to stop
- 7:14that you were able to control yourself
- 7:16it just wasn't an opportunity
- 7:19to uh
- 7:20fully Express what I wanted to to do
- 7:24they're just not the physical
- 7:25opportunity to do it then
- 7:27and I started
- 7:30when I moved to Milwaukee in 81
- 7:33uh
- 7:35I started
- 7:36reading pornography going to the
- 7:38bookstores
- 7:41um eventually that led to
- 7:46frequenting the gay bars and then I
- 7:51one time I brought this young man back
- 7:54to the hotel room the Ambassador Hotel
- 7:57I was just planning on drugging him and
- 8:00spending the night with him
- 8:02had no intention of hurting him when I
- 8:04woke up in the morning he had a broken
- 8:07rib here it was heavily bruised
- 8:10apparently I had beaten him to death
- 8:13with my fists and you have no memory no
- 8:16memory of it but that's what started the
- 8:18whole spree all over again Dahmer says
- 8:21he snuck the corpse of his victim
- 8:23Stephen Toomey out of his hotel room in
- 8:25a suitcase then he took it to his
- 8:28grandmother's house where he cut up the
- 8:30body and put it in plastic garbage bags
- 8:32when you killed these men
- 8:35afterwards or you repulsed were you
- 8:38upset no it at the time uh it was it was
- 8:43almost addictive it was almost uh
- 8:48a surge of energy uh I wouldn't have to
- 8:52uh
- 8:54worry about
- 8:56um
- 8:57any of their needs or anything I just
- 8:59had complete control of the situation
- 9:01but Jeffrey Dahmer was out of control
- 9:03the urge to kill had overpowered him as
- 9:06police later learned he wasn't satisfied
- 9:08with his victim's death he wanted more
- 9:11why did you photograph them
- 9:14it was my way of remembering uh their
- 9:18appearance their physical Beauty
- 9:22uh
- 9:23I also wanted to keep
- 9:27some if I couldn't keep them there with
- 9:30me whole I at least I felt that I could
- 9:32keep their skeletons
- 9:35and I even went so far as planning on
- 9:39setting up an altar with the uh
- 9:4410 different skulls and skeletons and
- 9:47what was the purpose of the altar going
- 9:49to be uh
- 9:51as a sort of Memorial
- 9:56a point where I could
- 9:59I don't know it's it's so bizarre and
- 10:02strange it's hard to describe a place
- 10:05where I could collect my thoughts
- 10:08um
- 10:09and feed my obsession when the bodies
- 10:12were still in your apartment
- 10:15there was no time when you would
- 10:18see them and say this is grotesque what
- 10:22have I done
- 10:23there were times there were times but a
- 10:26compulsive obsession with uh
- 10:31doing what I was doing overpowered any
- 10:33feelings of revulsion
- 10:35man with a quiet almost shy demeanor
- 10:37became a master manipulator who was able
- 10:40to or strangers he met at gay bars to
- 10:42his apartment he was even able to con
- 10:45the police into returning a 14 year old
- 10:47boy to him after neighbors called 9-1-1
- 10:50upset that the child was in the street
- 10:53naked and bleeding Dahmer convinced the
- 10:55police that he and the boy were Simply
- 10:57Having a lover's quarrel
- 10:59[Music]
- 11:01boyfriend of another boyfriend
- 11:05how old was the child it wasn't a child
- 11:08after the police left Jeffrey Dahmer
- 11:10murdered that boy conorak's into some
- 11:13phone this man says he had a near-fatal
- 11:17encounter with Jeffrey Dahmer you want
- 11:19to take some picture of my back he hit
- 11:21me with a rubber hammer on my neck he
- 11:24was lucky to escape because by then the
- 11:27killing had become almost routine before
- 11:29you went out to pick up a man
- 11:32was there any kind of ritual you went
- 11:34through I go to the nightclubs drink
- 11:38watch the uh the strip tea shows
- 11:43and if I didn't meet anyone at the bars
- 11:46I'd go to the bath clubs and meet meet
- 11:50someone there offer them money
- 11:53and we'd go back to the apartment
- 11:57have a few drinks I'd have the uh
- 12:01the sleeping pill mixture already
- 12:04prepared
- 12:06person would drink it to fall asleep
- 12:09and uh
- 12:10that's when they would be strangled
- 12:13watching the movie Exorcist 3 was also
- 12:16part of his ritual it put him in the
- 12:18mood for murder I felt so hopelessly
- 12:23evil and perverted that uh
- 12:29that I I actually derives a sort of
- 12:32pleasure from watching that tape did you
- 12:35like feeling evil no no I didn't but uh
- 12:40I tried to
- 12:42overcome the thoughts and it worked for
- 12:45a while but eventually I gave in while
- 12:48Jeffrey Dahmer may say things today that
- 12:51make it seem like he understands what
- 12:53went on in his mind he does not all he
- 12:56can do is tell you what happened but he
- 12:59cannot stop whatever it is that drove
- 13:01him to kill in the first place do you
- 13:04still feel those same urges do you still
- 13:07feel that compulsion that Obsession uh I
- 13:11wish I could say that it just left
- 13:14completely but
- 13:15no there are times when I still do
- 13:18still do have the old compulsions
- 13:23and coming next as we continue Dahmer
- 13:25talks about how his obsessions became
- 13:27more and more out of control I was dead
- 13:31set on on going with this compulsion it
- 13:34was the only thing that gave me any uh
- 13:39any satisfaction
- 13:41[Music]
- 13:45to interview Bill Jeffrey Dahmer says as
- 13:48time went on his mind became more and
- 13:50more warped and yet he was clever enough
- 13:52to continue to elude police and lure
- 13:55young men to his apartment we should
- 13:57warn you the details are very graphic I
- 14:00started having these obsessive thoughts
- 14:03I was about 15 and 16 and they got worse
- 14:08and worse what were your fantasies about
- 14:10uh
- 14:12they were sexual fantasies of control
- 14:14Power
- 14:16of complete dominance they became
- 14:19reality it was there pleasure in that
- 14:21fantasy there was excitement uh
- 14:25fear pleasure all mixed together Jeffrey
- 14:28Dahmer fulfilled his fantasies by
- 14:30murdering and dismembering 17 young men
- 14:33in time his desires became more extreme
- 14:36his deeds more grotesque listen to him
- 14:40talk about the most unnatural things in
- 14:42the most matter-of-fact of ways that's
- 14:45when you realize that none of it has
- 14:47touched him I was branching out that's
- 14:50when the cannibalism started
- 14:53eating of the heart
- 14:54and the arm muscle is was a way of
- 14:59making me feel that they were a part of
- 15:03me
- 15:05for at first it was just curiosity and
- 15:08then it became compulsive then I tried
- 15:11to uh
- 15:13keeps the person alive by inducing a
- 15:17zombie-like state
- 15:19um
- 15:22by injecting uh
- 15:26first dilute acid solution into their
- 15:29brain
- 15:30or hot water
- 15:32and it never did completely work could
- 15:36someone like you be stopped could you be
- 15:39helped no I I was
- 15:42I was dead set on on going with this
- 15:46compulsion it was the only thing that
- 15:48gave me any
- 15:49uh
- 15:51uh any satisfaction he became so warped
- 15:54by his evil impulses that he even took a
- 15:57victim's head with him to work at the
- 15:59Ambrosia Chocolate Factory I kept the uh
- 16:04a mummified head and skull of one of the
- 16:08victims in a carrying case in my locker
- 16:12at work were you almost flaunting it yes
- 16:15but that's how strong the compulsion was
- 16:18that's how the bizarre the desire was I
- 16:21wanted to keep something of of the
- 16:24person with me Jeffrey Dahmer exhibited
- 16:26some Disturbing Behavior early on he
- 16:29began drinking heavily as a teenager
- 16:31dropped out of college was arrested for
- 16:34indecent exposure disorderly conduct and
- 16:37fondling a 13 year old boy tragically
- 16:40one of his murder victims would be that
- 16:42boy's brother you know what started it
- 16:44was there any kind of incident that you
- 16:46can remember to this day I don't know
- 16:48what started it
- 16:49and uh the person to blame is sitting
- 16:52right across from you that's the only
- 16:54person
- 16:55not parents not Society not pornography
- 16:58I mean those are just excuses is macabre
- 17:0213-year crime spray finally ended when
- 17:05this man Tracy Edwards brought the
- 17:07police to the infamous apartment like
- 17:09the others he had gone there with the
- 17:11promise of money he was listening to my
- 17:14heart because at a point he told me he
- 17:15was gonna eat my heart at that point I
- 17:17hit him I and I ran what was the turning
- 17:20point for you that made you suddenly
- 17:22realize that you had done something
- 17:24terribly wrong something you should be
- 17:26sorry for it was the night of the arrest
- 17:29they have no memory of what happened
- 17:33uh during the six hours before uh the
- 17:37last victim ran out of the apartment I
- 17:40heard a knock on the door and the police
- 17:42were there
- 17:44with with the last victim
- 17:48they asked me where the key was to the
- 17:51handcuffs I
- 17:53was my mind was in a haze I sort of
- 17:56pointed to the bedroom and that's where
- 17:59they found the pictures and they they
- 18:02yelled cuff them I was handcuffed
- 18:05and
- 18:06it was just the realization that there
- 18:10was no point in trying to hide hide my
- 18:15actions anymore the best route was to
- 18:18help help the police identify all the
- 18:21victims and just make a complete
- 18:24confession when it was revealed that
- 18:27most of the victims were black or
- 18:28homosexual people in Milwaukee were
- 18:31incensed many felt that was why he went
- 18:33after them and why the police didn't
- 18:36seem to care when their families
- 18:37reported them missing 10 of your 17
- 18:40victims were black were they racially
- 18:43motivated it was not racially motivated
- 18:45but was not a sexual preference it was
- 18:48just to find
- 18:50an obsession with the best looking young
- 18:54man I could find well you just heard him
- 18:57say that his sexual preference had
- 18:59nothing to do with the killings no he
- 19:00has not come to terms with his
- 19:02homosexuality never understood it there
- 19:05was no use trying to fight it because I
- 19:07I couldn't rid myself of it it was
- 19:09it was too powerful and persistent do
- 19:12you dislike it yes it's caused a lot of
- 19:15problems
- 19:17for me live conflicts and unanswered
- 19:21questions the conflicts remain with him
- 19:23and so do his compulsions but in prison
- 19:26he finally cannot act on his Savage
- 19:29desires if you were out on the street
- 19:31now
- 19:32would you still be committing the crimes
- 19:34probably if this hadn't happened there's
- 19:37no doubt I probably would be I can't
- 19:39think of anything that would have
- 19:41stopped me
- 19:42boy does he come across as cold-blooded
- 19:45did you see any remorse well he says
- 19:46he's so
- 19:48he's so sure he knows what that means
- 19:50tomorrow he talks about how he
- 19:52disassociated himself from his crimes
- 19:54and what lengths he went to to hide them
- 19:56we will see you tomorrow Nancy thanks
- 19:58for that report
- 20:00and Inside Edition we'll be right back
- 20:06tomorrow more of Nancy glass's interview
- 20:08with Jeffrey Dahmer
- 20:10what do you want to say to the families
- 20:12of the victims I had no intention of of
- 20:15hurting them I was extremely selfish I
- 20:18was only thinking of myself
- 20:21[Music]
- 20:32it's the interview the nation is talking
- 20:34about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer
- 20:37speaking for the first time well that's
- 20:39it so easy though for you to hide it all
- 20:41I bought security systems uh installed
- 20:44them myself in the apartment I had
- 20:47video camera in the corner of the room
- 20:49today Nancy Glass continues her
- 20:52remarkable interview with serial killer
- 20:54Jeffrey Dahmer
- 20:55[Music]
- 21:03he was home alone when an intruder
- 21:05turned her evening into a night of
- 21:07Terror
- 21:09she reached for the phone in a desperate
- 21:12call for help but it was too late or was
- 21:15it the phone was off the hook we were
- 21:18able to record almost the entire
- 21:20conversation let's go
- 21:22[Music]
- 21:28foreign
- 21:31Edition today what would you do if a
- 21:34thug broke into your house could you
- 21:36hold wide it is one thing to read about
- 21:38his crimes quite another to hear how
- 21:40dispassionately this killer talks about
- 21:42his grisly Deeds Nancy Glass joins us
- 21:45now to continue her exclusive interview
- 21:46with Dahmer Nancy so Jeffrey Dahmer is
- 21:49now in jail serving 15 consecutive life
- 21:52terms for his terrible crimes Wisconsin
- 21:55does not have the death penalty in
- 21:57prison he is getting therapy but he says
- 21:59it hasn't helped him he spends his time
- 22:01reading the Bible and volumes of mail I
- 22:04asked him if he was afraid of what might
- 22:06happen in prison and he said no what
- 22:09difference does it make if someone comes
- 22:10after him because he doesn't care if he
- 22:12lives or dies
- 22:17gay bars picking up men to seduce and
- 22:21murder Jeffrey Dahmer says his desire to
- 22:24control and possess his victims drove
- 22:26him to inhuman acts on the living and
- 22:29the dead he was a killing machine out of
- 22:31control
- 22:33how should you be punished well there's
- 22:36no question I that I deserve the death
- 22:38penalty if
- 22:40I've wondered myself why
- 22:42I
- 22:44I don't have the death penalty
- 22:47that that's what I deserve I deserve
- 22:50debt what do you think happens after you
- 22:52die
- 22:54right that's the big unknown
- 22:57I've thought of uh I've had thoughts of
- 22:59of suicide uh
- 23:02but I just uh
- 23:04haven't been able to uh carry them
- 23:07through
- 23:10I don't know what the future will hold
- 23:11in the past Jeffrey Dahmer was very sure
- 23:14of what he wanted and how to get it 17
- 23:17young men would die at his hands later
- 23:20when he made this confession to the
- 23:22police he included crimes to grotesque
- 23:25to repeat on television too gruesome to
- 23:28be believed dismemberment cannibalism
- 23:30and worse and he was cunning enough to
- 23:32get away with it for 13 years why was it
- 23:36so easy though for you to hide it all I
- 23:38desensitized myself to it I
- 23:41I uh
- 23:47I don't know I went to Great Lengths I I
- 23:49bought security systems uh installed
- 23:52them myself in the apartment I had
- 23:55a video camera in the corner of the room
- 23:57uh installed locks on the doors
- 24:03sirens and stuff in case anyone broke
- 24:05into the apartment and although his
- 24:07victim's body parts were in the
- 24:09apartment when his father and stepmother
- 24:11came to visit they detected nothing they
- 24:15said it was absolutely clean perfect
- 24:17right had to hide from them everything
- 24:20was locked up
- 24:22either in the freezer or in the
- 24:27file chest
- 24:29and so there was no evidence laying in
- 24:31the in the open
- 24:34there's nothing abnormal about the look
- 24:36of the apartment and he almost got
- 24:38caught after a 14 year old victim
- 24:40escaped into the street naked and
- 24:43bleeding when neighbors called 9-1-1
- 24:46Dahmer managed to talk his way out of
- 24:48trouble during the incident where the
- 24:50police were called
- 24:52and the young boy was returned to you
- 24:55that didn't wake you up at all the
- 24:57police on your doorstep they were they
- 25:00were in the apartment they were actually
- 25:03in the apartment and there was a a dead
- 25:06young man in the bedroom
- 25:08on the floor I couldn't believe it when
- 25:11uh
- 25:13when it turned out that they they
- 25:15didn't see anything I just I couldn't
- 25:17believe it and yes it did shock me but
- 25:20not enough to quit That's How Strong the
- 25:22compulsion was Jeffrey Dahmer describes
- 25:24the Unspeakable with no emotion it is as
- 25:28if he sees his victims as objects not
- 25:30people in fact when he confessed he
- 25:33remembered every horrific detail of what
- 25:35he did to them but he couldn't remember
- 25:38their names do you ever think about your
- 25:40victims
- 25:44uh I've often wondered why I haven't had
- 25:48uh more more dreams or nightmares about
- 25:52what I've done for some reason it's like
- 25:56it's it's blocked off from part of my
- 25:58mind
- 25:58if I dwelled on the subject all the time
- 26:00I would
- 26:04I wouldn't be able to function Jeffrey
- 26:06Dahmer prefers to hide from the
- 26:08difficult truth about himself that has
- 26:10always been his pattern even during his
- 26:13trial he found a way to tune out you
- 26:16were in glasses now right you didn't
- 26:19during the trial
- 26:21why not I
- 26:23didn't want to I felt uncomfortable
- 26:26looking anyone in the face I didn't want
- 26:28to
- 26:29uh
- 26:30see anyone's face clearly it helped me
- 26:33disassociate myself from what was
- 26:34happening
- 26:38one woman in particular really got angry
- 26:43what did you think when she was doing
- 26:44that I couldn't blame her a bit
- 26:47I'm surprised there wasn't more of that
- 26:49what do you want to say to the families
- 26:51of the victims I had no intention of of
- 26:54hurting them
- 26:56I was I
- 26:59I was extremely selfish I was only
- 27:01thinking of myself my own pleasure my
- 27:04own
- 27:06uh
- 27:08perverted desires you know the families
- 27:10are the victims
- 27:12don't believe in your conversion or your
- 27:16sorrow Oh right and uh
- 27:19if if I if I was on the on their end of
- 27:23the table
- 27:24I wouldn't either ultimately I am
- 27:27accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ he
- 27:31he'll be my final judge can your sins be
- 27:34forgiven the Lord Jesus Christ shed
- 27:36blood is powerful enough to you to wipe
- 27:40out even my sins when he had to deal
- 27:42with some of the terrible realities of
- 27:44his life Jeffrey Dahmer's conversation
- 27:46would Veer off into scripture like many
- 27:49other criminals he claims he has found
- 27:51God in prison and his daily routine
- 27:54reflects his need to shut out the world
- 27:57I usually wake up at 6 30 in the morning
- 28:01go eat breakfast
- 28:03and then
- 28:05sleep until noon wake up for lunch
- 28:10and sleep until about four o'clock in
- 28:13the afternoon eat dinner and then spend
- 28:16the Greer portion of the night watching
- 28:18TV he is up all night because he cannot
- 28:21face the daylight and the Monstrous
- 28:23crimes that put him behind bars I try
- 28:27not to think too
- 28:29too deeply about anything because then I
- 28:31get depressed
- 28:33uh
- 28:34uh I try to figure out why this happened
- 28:36what what started these thoughts in my
- 28:38head at such a young age
- 28:42whether this has any
- 28:45any meaning to it or whether this is all
- 28:47just a horrible coincidence you know all
- 28:49the events in my life I feel that I'm
- 28:52better off here
- 28:55than I than than I was on the outside
- 28:57doing what I was doing you're glad
- 28:58you're in prison
- 29:00I think it's best for everyone right
- 29:03and you heard Jeffrey Dahmer say he
- 29:05wants to be punished the victim's
- 29:07families agree they voice their opinions
- 29:09tomorrow and Jeffrey Dahmer talks about
- 29:12his early years and his family life and
- 29:14finally an expert on serial killers will
- 29:16tell us how this could have happened
- 29:19still good report Nancy thank you and
- 29:21we'll see you tomorrow
- 29:22it's their reaction on Inside Edition
- 29:24unique insight into the mind of a
- 29:27monster I'm against capital punishment
- 29:29but I still think that he's not
- 29:31suffering enough today the victim's
- 29:33relatives speak out I would like to ask
- 29:36him why he's on a suicide watch and from
- 29:39day one he's never tried to commit
- 29:41suicide so I mean get you know get a
- 29:44clue he likes living just like my
- 29:47brother didn't like him
- 29:51for the past two nights we have heard
- 29:52serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer explain why
- 29:55he did what he did Dahmer makes no
- 29:57excuses he feels he should be executed
- 29:59but what about the families of his
- 30:01victims what are they going through and
- 30:03what is their reaction to the words of
- 30:05Dahmer Nancy Glass continues her
- 30:07exclusive interview Nancy Bill the
- 30:09building where Jeffrey Dahmer's crimes
- 30:11were discovered has been torn down the
- 30:13grisly details of his Killing Spree have
- 30:15been revealed he will be in prison for
- 30:17the rest of his life All That Remains is
- 30:20the question why did this happen at
- 30:23normal friendships in high school but
- 30:25after that
- 30:27I started in with the alcohol drinking a
- 30:29lot of solitary drinking
- 30:31and uh
- 30:33really never had any close friendships
- 30:35after that After High School
- 30:38just to sort of lived in my own thought
- 30:41life fantasy world what created those
- 30:44Twisted fantasies is a question many are
- 30:47asking According to some experts Jeffrey
- 30:50Dahmer does not fit the profile of a
- 30:52ritual murderer the typical serial
- 30:54killer
- 30:55kills for the thrill for the excitement
- 30:58he wants to hear the victim Scream and
- 31:00Shout
- 31:01and try to get away Northeastern
- 31:04University Professor Jack Levin is a
- 31:06sociologist and criminologist who has
- 31:09studied hundreds of serial killers he
- 31:11says what he saw in our interview
- 31:13surprised him I think the very fact that
- 31:16he sedated his victims before he
- 31:18strangled them which is the last thing
- 31:20that most serial killers would do gives
- 31:23us an indication that he may actually
- 31:25have felt guilty and that he did care to
- 31:27at least to some extent about his
- 31:29victims he's a little bit different in a
- 31:31number of ways and the Very fact that he
- 31:34necrophiled his victims is is is a clue
- 31:38that he felt extremely rejected
- 31:40abandoned and he couldn't even have sex
- 31:44with his victims while they were alive
- 31:47in most cases he had to kill him first
- 31:49were you molested never
- 31:52ever in your childhood you have any
- 31:55memories of anything that you would
- 31:57associate with what you became no that's
- 32:00the that's the strange thing I can't
- 32:02pinpoint any anything so there was
- 32:04nothing in your childhood no no abuse no
- 32:08physical abuse no verbal abuse it was a
- 32:10normal childhood in a good home
- 32:13something went awry in my thought life I
- 32:18I don't know why he grew up on this
- 32:20quiet tree-lined street in bath Ohio
- 32:23friends say the young Jeffrey Dahmer
- 32:25exhibited some unusual interests were
- 32:28you obsessed with dead animals is that
- 32:30true I was interested in taxidermy
- 32:34in high school and experimented with
- 32:37preserving the bones of dogs and things
- 32:40like that
- 32:41and uh
- 32:44whether that had anything to do with
- 32:46with the escalation of the crimes I
- 32:49don't know but by all accounts his
- 32:51terrible crimes are far removed from his
- 32:54ordinary Beginnings his father Lionel is
- 32:56a chemist who taught his son how to play
- 32:58tennis his mother Joyce was a housewife
- 33:01the family split apart when Jeffrey
- 33:03Dahmer turned 18 a court order kept his
- 33:06father away from the house his mother
- 33:08who had been hospitalized for mental
- 33:10problems left too it was when he was
- 33:13alone in the house that Jeffrey Dahmer
- 33:15committed his first murder let me put
- 33:18this in perspective there are millions
- 33:19of people who get divorced there are
- 33:21millions of people who have stepparents
- 33:23and what does it do to them well it
- 33:27doesn't make them kill it doesn't make
- 33:28them cannibalize
- 33:30um I think we've got to understand that
- 33:32we might be able to explain part of this
- 33:34but we're not able to predict who's
- 33:36going to turn out to be a serial killer
- 33:39Jeffrey Dahmer's father and stepmother
- 33:41Sherry say when he was in trouble in the
- 33:43past they tried to get him help they
- 33:46were as shocked as everyone else to hear
- 33:48about his secret life the king is
- 33:51watching the families have having to sit
- 33:53there and listen to the Gory details and
- 33:58yet what do we say to these
- 33:59families out there who don't even have
- 34:01the child
- 34:03to bury in many cases
- 34:07such a tragic waste
- 34:10and we can't do anything about it
- 34:14they say around them Jeffrey Dahmer
- 34:16acted as if nothing was wrong how did
- 34:18you live that double life how did you go
- 34:20to work how did you have a normal
- 34:23relationship with your family when you
- 34:25try to keep a terrible secret like I was
- 34:27it warps every other aspect of your life
- 34:31but I managed to uh
- 34:33I managed to go to work
- 34:36conduct myself just like anyone else
- 34:38would Jeffrey Dahmer is determined to
- 34:41try to explain his hideous crime but why
- 34:44would he take the mask off now Jack
- 34:47Levin says he thinks he knows you know
- 34:49it's very hard to feel sympathy for
- 34:52someone who has
- 34:54killed 17 people and is cannibalized the
- 34:57remains I think he wanted a chance
- 35:01to let people know
- 35:04that he did care
- 35:06that he was a remorseful human being now
- 35:09I'm not sure that came through
- 35:11but I think that was his intention the
- 35:14families of his victims disagreed they
- 35:16gathered to watch What Jeffrey Dahmer
- 35:18had to say they sat in stunned silence
- 35:21as they heard him describe the terrible
- 35:23end to the lives of their sons and
- 35:25brothers
- 35:27he's on a suicide watch and so
- 35:31he's never tried to commit suicide so I
- 35:33mean get you know get a clue he likes
- 35:37living just like my brother did like
- 35:39that's right him saying sorry to me
- 35:41because I bring back my brothers who
- 35:42does not bring back 17 men I'm against
- 35:45capital punishment but I still think
- 35:47that he's not suffering enough we may
- 35:49never know what demons drove this
- 35:51maniacal killer Jeffrey Dahmer himself
- 35:54talks about the need to overpower and
- 35:56possess his victims but Jack Levin says
- 35:59the serial murderer cannot face his own
- 36:01rage there was this side where he
- 36:04actually wanted to possess his victims
- 36:07but the other side was that he hated
- 36:09them he was very angry with humanity and
- 36:12this is kind of his way of getting even
- 36:14it would be easier to understand what
- 36:16happened if he came across as the
- 36:18glassy-eyed monster we expect him to be
- 36:21instead he's able to appear normal which
- 36:24is what once made him so dangerous most
- 36:27serial killers know the difference
- 36:29between right and wrong they know what
- 36:31they do is wrong and they simply don't
- 36:33care Jeffrey Dahmer cared perhaps but
- 36:37not enough to stop himself
- 36:40and finally I've been covering this
- 36:42story since it first broke it has been
- 36:44very difficult at times to deal with the
- 36:46gruesome details a lot of which we chose
- 36:49not to put on television but I thought
- 36:51this was an important story to tell
