- 1:41and strength of steel who will never
- 1:43give up her challenge to law enforcement

- 1:54you I'm coming baby up comes a stolen
- 1:57life a child's courage a mother's love
- 2:00and victory achieved through the power
- 2:03of indestructible hope
- 2:05[Music]
- 2:08good evening so glad you're with us in
- 2:10her book a stolen life Jaycee Dugard has
- 2:13a quote from TS Eliot about people who
- 2:15carry the light of hope in the world who
- 2:18hold it close and wait wherever the
- 2:20journey takes them we want to thank all
- 2:22of you who gathered to watch her story
- 2:25some of it is harrowing some of it will
- 2:27make you simply outraged especially when
- 2:29you see the times law enforcement could
- 2:31have saved her and did not and at the
- 2:35Predators who defy understanding but in
- 2:39the end Jaycee Dugard would find a way
- 2:41to save herself but the light no one
- 2:43could extinguish holding on to hope a
- 2:46mother who would never let go and some
- 2:49caring and observant strangers who would
- 2:52make it possible one day for her to call
- 2:54her mother and say I am Alive I'm coming
- 2:58home
- 2:59she was a little girl with a name right
- 3:02out of a storybook Jaycee Lee Dugard age
- 3:0511 years old her little sister a cat
- 3:11named monkey and school and books and
- 3:13stories and by holding on to the memory
- 3:15of everything she loved survived and
- 3:18would triumph after a battle in a
- 3:20monstrous backyard where a convicted sex
- 3:24offender let out of prison Phillip
- 3:25Garrido and his wife Nancy kidnapped her
- 3:28handcuffed her imprisoned her had her
- 3:30give birth outside and over and over
- 3:34again the justice system would fail her
- 3:36for 18 years she was forbidden to say
- 3:40her own name so this is how her book a
- 3:42stolen life begins let's get one thing
- 3:46straight
- 3:46my name is JC Lee Dugard I was kidnapped
- 3:50by a stranger at age 11 and I want
- 3:53Phillip Garrido to know that I no longer
- 3:55have to keep his secret I was happy she
- 3:58is 31 years old she looks impossible
- 4:03she is also someone who laughs a lot and
- 4:07has delight in ordinary things on
- 4:09ordinary days I do Drive I Drive very
- 4:15safely
- 4:16you would never know what she survived
- 4:19oh my painkiller
- 4:20you notice how her face changes when she
- 4:23speaks of the past and the charm around
- 4:25her neck it's a pine crown back then it
- 4:28was the last thing I touched you know
- 4:30the last grip on me now it's it's a
- 4:36symbol of hope and new beginnings and
- 4:42that there is life after something
- 4:48tragic and tonight she says this is what
- 4:50she wants to do she will not speak of
- 4:52every detail she has written in her book
- 4:54but lessons of hope and survival and
- 4:57what it meant to her to have a mother
- 4:59who would never let go it is June 10th
- 5:031991 Jaycee Dugard wakes up in this
- 5:06house in Lake Tahoe California where her
- 5:08families moved because it's a safe place
- 5:10to live
- 5:11she's in the fifth grade and remembers
- 5:14worrying about the field trip coming up
- 5:16because she's so shy remembers dressing
- 5:18in her favorite all pink outfit and she
- 5:21remembers the mom she absolutely adores
- 5:24had to leave early for her work as a
- 5:25typesetter at a print house and didn't
- 5:28keep a promise she said that she'd give
- 5:29me a kiss goodbye
- 5:30and she didn't it wasn't mad I just you
- 5:34know I thought I'd catch her when I got
- 5:36home you know tell her you got to give
- 5:39me a kiss next time you know she also
- 5:42remembers there was something she had
- 5:44wanted to ask her mom I wanted to ask my
- 5:46mom if I could shave for the field trip
- 5:51she shaved your legs yeah big question
- 5:54wanna be embarrassed yeah ya didn't
- 5:58wanna be embarrassed so that was the big
- 6:01question on my mind she walks up the
- 6:05hill from the house to catch the school
- 6:06bus the way her mother taught her
- 6:08looking out for traffic walked up the
- 6:10side of the hill it was the safe way to
- 6:12go against traffic
- 6:14and halfway up my world changed in an
- 6:21instant I thought Oh somebody is looking
- 6:25for directions a gray car pulls up a man
- 6:28rolls down the window because what else
- 6:31would it be
- 6:31and his hand shoots out and I just feel
- 6:35numb my whole body is tingly I don't
- 6:38know what it's from I fall back in the
- 6:41bushes she had been paralyzed by a stun
- 6:44gun I lost control my bladder
- 6:47I wasn't even embarrassed no time to be
- 6:50embarrassed on the ground sharp edges of
- 6:53a pine cone are the last thing she
- 6:55touches before she comes to face down on
- 6:58the floor in the back seat of a car
- 7:01I remember my throat felt very dry and
- 7:04Scratchy and like I had been screaming
- 7:06but I don't remember screaming the man
- 7:09behind the wheel is Phillip Garrido a
- 7:11convicted sex offender supposedly
- 7:13monitored by parole officers and doctors
- 7:16holding her down on the floor is his
- 7:18wife Nancy the district attorney
- 7:20believes Nancy scouted this little girl
- 7:23for her husband as a prize did they say
- 7:26anything did you hear anything no not at
- 7:29first after we were driving for a while
- 7:31I heard the driver say I can't believe
- 7:34we got away with it and he started
- 7:36laughing I think I blacked out again or
- 7:39something it was like the most horrible
- 7:44moment of your life times 10 a hundred
- 7:50and twenty miles later the car stops in
- 7:52front of this house on a neighborhood
- 7:54street the Rideau tells her to be quiet
- 7:57I said you know I think it's probably
- 7:59one of the only things I said was my
- 8:03family doesn't have a lot of money they
- 8:04can't pay the ransom that's what I
- 8:06kidnapped his ransom right yeah no not
- 8:12always
- 8:13he is 40 years old six feet four inches
- 8:16tall she is 11 four feet six eighty
- 8:20pounds he takes away the pink clothes
- 8:23she dressed in that morning the only
- 8:25thing she has left is a little ring
- 8:28like a butterfly she will hide from him
- 8:30for 18 years blanket over her head he
- 8:34walks her through a small area of grass
- 8:35toward a fence where an opening is
- 8:37concealed by a tarp and hidden behind
- 8:39the fence a deranged collection of sheds
- 8:41and storage units which the people
- 8:44monitoring ggarrido
- 8:45would not search one of them tiny
- 8:48completely soundproof he leads her
- 8:51inside and takes out handcuffs said that
- 8:54they there were the fuzzy kind so they
- 8:56wouldn't hurt as bad whatever
- 9:00behind your back yeah there was a pallet
- 9:03on the floor and then he said he'd be
- 9:06back later and he shut the studio or the
- 9:11soundproof door and then the other door
- 9:14with the lock you heard that
- 9:17I'll hear it consciously or when I'm
- 9:22awake just some sounds and smells and
- 9:26this don't leave you he warns her there
- 9:29are dogs outside Dobermans they'll
- 9:31attack if she tries to escape she
- 9:34notices there's one window covered with
- 9:36bars and a towel he leaves at one point
- 9:41you write that you get up and you take
- 9:43your teeth and you pull a towel I wanted
- 9:46to see where I was yeah I couldn't use
- 9:49my hands and there was just weeds and
- 9:54some kind of fence naked in handcuffs
- 9:58she drifts in and out of sleep crying I
- 10:01didn't really want to because then you
- 10:03can't wipe him away you know then you
- 10:06get all sticky and you know I mean that
- 10:10sounds awful you know I tried not to cry
- 10:12because it I couldn't wipe them away or
- 10:17you know and then they get itchy and at
- 10:21one point she made a note to remember
- 10:23the sound of the train so it would help
- 10:25her mom find her then later was just
- 10:28listening to lawnmowers and airplanes
- 10:34anything for human contact I guess I was
- 10:40so lonely I
- 10:41and I felt so alone
- 10:44have you seen Jaycee Lee Dugard and 120
- 10:48miles away the mother who loves her and
- 10:50will never give up goes on television to
- 10:53make her first plea it's pretty young
- 10:56innocent child friends have been
- 10:59searching all day and evening police
- 11:01started searching the neighborhood
- 11:02police set up a roadblock and go
- 11:05door-to-door her classmates are out on
- 11:07the streets holding up signs and it's
- 11:09time that she comes home and she's
- 11:11written that all alone that night she
- 11:14decided to cling to something that would
- 11:17sustain her there is moonlight streaming
- 11:19through the towel it makes her think of
- 11:22her mother we would always sit on the
- 11:24porch and we would debate whether the
- 11:29full moon or the crescent moon was the
- 11:31better moon I was like the full moon and
- 11:36she liked the Crescent and just always
- 11:44made me think of her do you remember the
- 11:46song you and your mom saying looking at
- 11:49the moon okay right
- 11:52you are the moon how does it go okay I
- 11:55love the moon I see the moon and the
- 12:00moon sees me
- 12:01god bless the moon and god bless me when
- 12:11we come back a mother's search you're
- 12:14always there I never left me parole
- 12:17officers doctors who miss what is in
- 12:19front of them and the story
- 12:21Jaycee Dugard will tell for all the
- 12:23victims of sex abuse a story she says is
- 12:26his shame not hers can't steal anything
- 12:30else can't steal our love for each other
- 12:34couldn't take that away and also ahead
- 12:37the women who save her and the day she
- 12:40comes home
- 12:43[Music]
- 12:45once again Diane Sawyer we want to begin
- 12:51now with a parental warning for anyone
- 12:53who might have children in the room and
- 12:55also with some numbers we should all
- 12:57know there are 20,000 abductions of
- 13:00children every year by strangers 99
- 13:03percent of them will be returned fairly
- 13:05soon but of the 100 who are held long
- 13:09term only about a half returned alive
- 13:12and fewer still have the strength to
- 13:14bear witness to the reality of what
- 13:16predators do Jaycee Dugard said she
- 13:20wanted to write it for all the victims
- 13:22and as a call to action for judges
- 13:25psychiatrist parole officers and any of
- 13:28us who might be able to save a child's
- 13:30life okay this is Phillip Garrido in a
- 13:36video obtained by ABC News from the
- 13:38prosecutors he is singing one of the
- 13:40songs he wrote he told everyone he was a
- 13:42musical genius on the verge of a big
- 13:44break he also calls himself the witness
- 13:48rambling on about the Bible saying he
- 13:51was chosen to hear the voices of demon
- 13:53angels in the walls in the ground and
- 13:56that he will save the world and doctors
- 14:00in the parole system know about him he's
- 14:02even given medication and everything he
- 14:05does is supposed to be monitored his
- 14:08first arrest was 1972 for raping a
- 14:11fourteen-year-old girl who was too
- 14:12afraid to testify so the case collapsed
- 14:14five years later in a rented storage
- 14:17container he raped a woman for eight
- 14:20hours who managed to escape because of
- 14:23her he was sentenced to 50 years in
- 14:25prison but he was released after a
- 14:28quarter of that sentence was served
- 14:30later he would even receive a letter of
- 14:32commendation from the parole board
- 14:33heralding him for his personal
- 14:36accomplishment and parole officers would
- 14:39visit him 60 times at his house and
- 14:42though they knew his patterns they never
- 14:45looked hard enough in the back yard to
- 14:47find a little girl
- 14:49Jaycee Dugard imprisoned two hours from
- 14:52her home she didn't know it but she was
- 14:55in Antioch on the outskirts of
- 14:57San Francisco it is still that first
- 15:00week in June 1991 the 11 year old girl
- 15:03handcuffed arms behind her back is
- 15:05aching skin rub draw Phillip Garrido is
- 15:08her only human contact and sometimes
- 15:11he'll just sit and tell her funny
- 15:12stories or bring her fast food classic
- 15:16approach we are told for a pedophile I
- 15:18depended on him for bathroom food
- 15:23company you had no water toothbrush no
- 15:27toilet today no not the toilet toilet
- 15:31was a bucket well I had handcuffs on so
- 15:34it was very difficult so she writes in
- 15:37the book she has no idea what he's
- 15:39planning to do she's never heard about
- 15:42sexual abuse had you ever heard the
- 15:44phrase nope not into boys other than you
- 15:50know maybe the new kids on the block or
- 15:52something like that sex was Ken and
- 15:55Barbie yeah laying together that's what
- 16:00it was
- 16:01that's what you thought it was that's
- 16:03what I thought it was yeah in her book
- 16:05what she has written is unflinching and
- 16:07detailed I asked her why she decided to
- 16:10write it all she said she wanted to do
- 16:13it for victims of sex abuse who often
- 16:16keeps secrets along with fear and shame
- 16:20why not look at it you know stare it
- 16:23down until it can't scare you anymore
- 16:26she worked on all this with her
- 16:28therapist rebecca bailey who specializes
- 16:30in family reunification after trauma
- 16:33it is not her shame those things
- 16:37happened to her they're not who she is
- 16:40this is the studio that's where I was
- 16:42first taken I didn't want there to be
- 16:44any more secrets as we continue we will
- 16:48not bring you all the details in the
- 16:50book we said she should only say out
- 16:52loud what she wants to say she tells us
- 16:55right after she's kidnapped he forces
- 16:57her into a shower with him and she's
- 16:59never seen an unclothed man again she's
- 17:02just 11 it will be at the end of that
- 17:05first week that he brings her a
- 17:07milkshake comes in with the milkshake
- 17:09and I was getting new
- 17:10to him coming in but he said things were
- 17:16gonna be different this time this time
- 17:18she is still in handcuffs the first time
- 17:21he rapes her remember crying but they
- 17:25were silent this tears running down my
- 17:28face she tells us she remembers seeing a
- 17:31trail of ants make their way toward the
- 17:33untouched milkshake
- 17:34it will continue day after day before I
- 17:38ate meals I felt like every day I mean I
- 17:40don't like I said time is hard to judge
- 17:45but there's a switch that I had to shut
- 17:48off just go someplace else
- 17:50this went someplace else at one point he
- 17:53brings in a TV though she can't see the
- 17:55news she doesn't know her mother is now
- 17:58asking neighbors to keep their porch
- 18:00lights on in case she comes home
- 18:08or that I can
- 18:11this is gonna bring her home I know it
- 18:13in the beginning you could only see QVC
- 18:17yeah I would fall asleep to the sound of
- 18:20jewelry being sold but at least it was
- 18:26talking and she tells us she thinks it
- 18:30was almost a month and a half later when
- 18:32ggarrido takes her out of that
- 18:34soundproof storage unit into a room next
- 18:36door over here the blue building he
- 18:40tells her the demon angels those voices
- 18:43he hears had let him take her because
- 18:45she will help him with his sexual
- 18:47problems and again this is a convicted
- 18:50sex offender still in the care of
- 18:51court-mandated doctors he had one
- 18:54appointment three days before he
- 18:56kidnapped JC and another appointment
- 18:58four days after but he tells her Society
- 19:01has ignored him and that's why she is
- 19:03there that's what I was here for yeah
- 19:05that's why he got me and if you do it
- 19:09you would keep other little girls safe
- 19:11yeah always
- 19:13yeah protect other people so he didn't
- 19:16have to go out and do this to anybody
- 19:17else did you believe that you were
- 19:20protecting other little girls I think I
- 19:22did I think on some level I did yeah
- 19:25he put that stun gun out on a table
- 19:28where she could see it
- 19:30he got out equipment for drugs and so
- 19:32began what he would call runs
- 19:34drug-filled binges four days in the book
- 19:37she writes what he forced her to do this
- 19:40is what she is comfortable telling us
- 19:42well they were very long usually started
- 19:46out with you know Eva dress me up for
- 19:48hours because he was taking
- 19:52methamphetamines and speed he called it
- 19:55speed he would get focused on one thing
- 19:58for long periods of time and then it
- 20:02usually went to him with his little
- 20:06books of cutouts that he would cut out
- 20:09for hours and pasted on little girls
- 20:12from magazines and porno magazines I
- 20:16mean then make sense to me at all
- 20:19but that's what he did and then
- 20:21sometimes he would make her listen for
- 20:24the voices
- 20:25the ones he says he can hear in the
- 20:27walls and when it's over she says he
- 20:30sobs he would apologize and that's the
- 20:35confusing part beg your forgiveness tell
- 20:38me what an awful man he was you know and
- 20:42Here I am trying to feeling you know
- 20:47hurting coz it hurt you know wanting it
- 20:50to stop and I have to comfort him after
- 20:55the tears to keep her compliant more
- 20:58threats once he said he'd sell her to
- 21:01people who would lock her in a cage she
- 21:03said she was shaking he would come up
- 21:05with unknown that would always be more
- 21:10terrifying than what I knew after you
- 21:13know I got used to the I don't know if
- 21:15you ever get used to that but you can
- 21:18get used to things once I got used to
- 21:20that it would be the unknown thing that
- 21:23was two more terrifying than actually
- 21:25keeping with the rent and doing
- 21:27something that was at least I knew what
- 21:29was gonna happen it's when he would
- 21:32invent new things and and all night long
- 21:34you would think that's what he was gonna
- 21:37do I begged him you know I'll do it
- 21:41better you know I'll be good because it
- 21:45was the unknown that was terrifying
- 21:47did you think it was gonna be the rest
- 21:49of your life it sounded like it and as
- 21:53the first month passes remember there's
- 21:55no way she can run the handcuffs the
- 21:57bolted doors the dogs outside there was
- 22:01not a day that I didn't cry I felt like
- 22:04they would never ever be a day that I
- 22:06wouldn't cry again and then after a
- 22:10while I told myself I can't cry anymore
- 22:13what's the most haunting memory that
- 22:16Locke carrying the lock I know I said
- 22:19that earlier but or some reason that and
- 22:23the bed squid was a squeaky bed squeaky
- 22:29pullout bed
- 22:32I guess the noise the sounds it's weird
- 22:37what sticks in your head but it sounds
- 22:42how did you stay sane I don't know I
- 22:48still alive was still there are still
- 22:54hope
- 22:59still hope I'm trying to imagine how you
- 23:02are coping I'm trying to imagine I don't
- 23:06know I can't imagine being beaten to
- 23:09death you know but and you can't imagine
- 23:12being kidnapped and and raped you know
- 23:15so it's just you just do what you have
- 23:18to do to survive and again she says she
- 23:22is telling her story so that the
- 23:23thousands of other survivors of sexual
- 23:26abuse know that survival is your
- 23:29strength not your shame it's that TS
- 23:32Eliot quote you haven't yeah I had hope
- 23:37thinking I have to hope in something
- 23:41hope was in the wrong place but
- 23:45sometimes you just have to hold on to
- 23:47any kind of hope to survive and there's
- 23:54one other measure of Jaycee Dugard 'he's
- 23:55willingness to stare it down stare down
- 23:58the truth it turns out Phillip Garrido
- 24:01videotaped what he did to her and the
- 24:04prosecutors asked her to look at them
- 24:06she says she did to make sure he had not
- 24:09kidnapped any other little girls and
- 24:11every tape was of her next the mother
- 24:16moving heaven and earth to find her
- 24:18child and seven months into her
- 24:21imprisonment someone new enters Jaycee
- 24:23Dugard room Nancy Garrido Philips wife
- 24:26together they try to take JC's identity
- 24:30away and she fights to hold on to it
- 24:32inside some ways she's just as evil as
- 24:36Phillip Barry
- 24:39twisted minds and later throws Momo
- 24:42investigates the colossal failures of
- 24:45the justice system mr. Messner we just
- 24:48want to ask you a question and if you
- 24:50think you might be witnessing child
- 24:51abuse there's a number to call on our
- 24:53website abcnews.com
- 24:55[Music]
- 24:59as we resume seven months have now
- 25:02passed since Jaycee Dugard was taken
- 25:04from her mother her sister her life
- 25:06that field trip she worried about long
- 25:09over her fifth grade classmates have now
- 25:11graduated elementary school her mother
- 25:14is still pleading with everyone to keep
- 25:16on searching for her she is coming home
- 25:19that gives me a lot of hope a lot of
- 25:21optimism somebody's you know feeding me
- 25:23dreams for a reason and by the way her
- 25:27biological father had left the family
- 25:29was never in Jaycees life there was a
- 25:31stepfather but JC was not close to him
- 25:34two hours away JC is now being moved
- 25:37back and forth from the soundproof room
- 25:39to the larger room where she's
- 25:40handcuffed to the bed her only company a
- 25:43spider she names Bianca then one day
- 25:46ggarrido says there's someone he wants
- 25:48her to meet and he wants them to be
- 25:50friends she enters the picture yes Nancy
- 25:55Nancy Garrido is his wife they had met
- 25:59in a visiting room at Leavenworth prison
- 26:01he a prisoner there she visiting her
- 26:04uncle
- 26:05she had Jehovah's Witness he talked to
- 26:07her about the Bible she was also in the
- 26:09car the day Jaycee Dugard was stun
- 26:11gunned and kidnapped she was the one who
- 26:13pinned the little girl to the floor with
- 26:15her legs now she shows up bringing a
- 26:18purple bear and a Barbie doll and
- 26:20chocolate milk I was so lonely I craved
- 26:23any kind of attention I wanted her to
- 26:26like me because because I felt like if
- 26:32she doesn't like me then I'm gonna get
- 26:35in trouble
- 26:36JC remembers using the cartons for the
- 26:39chocolate milk to try to make furniture
- 26:40for her Barbie Nancy starts bringing me
- 26:43meals there's a TV over there so I could
- 26:46watch TV as long as it was low she told
- 26:48you she was sorry
- 26:51what they've done to you mm-hmm she told
- 26:53me that means she was she cried too in
- 26:55some ways she's just as manipulative
- 26:58because she would cry and say I can't
- 27:01believe that he did this I wish he would
- 27:04have got a headache that morning that he
- 27:05took you and she knew everything yeah
- 27:08she knew everything everything what
- 27:11makes somebody do that in the first
- 27:15place take somebody else's child just to
- 27:20satisfy your husband I don't know she's
- 27:22just as evil as Phillip very twisted
- 27:27minds twisted okay does this a record
- 27:32still yes good remember the video
- 27:35obtained by the prosecutors of Phillip
- 27:38Garrido playing his guitar again he is a
- 27:41convicted sex offender supposed to be
- 27:43monitored at times even wearing an ankle
- 27:45bracelet but here he is singing at a
- 27:48children's playground and holding the
- 27:51camera his wife Nancy who will furtively
- 27:54move it off him away to gather secret
- 27:57pictures of little girls playing
- 28:01[Music]
- 28:03I can see you're really good as we've
- 28:08said later tonight we will go to law
- 28:10enforcement and seek answers when they
- 28:13are arrested Nancy Garrido will also be
- 28:16charged with kidnapping and raped by
- 28:18force we remember a moment from the
- 28:21courtroom Phillip Garrido Nancy Garrido
- 28:23in a jewelry box separated by their
- 28:26lawyers and suddenly he looks at her and
- 28:28mouths the words I love you even as she
- 28:33kept scouting little girls for her
- 28:35pedophile husband Nancy Garrido like him
- 28:38would alternate motherly concern with
- 28:40coldness and cruelty jealous very
- 28:43jealous of me for some reason
- 28:46like I wanted her husband to rape me
- 28:49very jealous and sick she worked by day
- 28:55as an aide in a nursing home but when
- 28:57Phillip Garrido vanished for a month she
- 28:59replaced him as jailer a whole month
- 29:02he's gone yeah she said that he was on
- 29:05an island with a friend but it was
- 29:08actually sent back to prison for failing
- 29:11a drug test so it's the two of you yeah
- 29:15she would lock us in every night she
- 29:18wanted to watch this scary movie called
- 29:21the unborn it was awful it was very
- 29:25scary and then she would leave in the
- 29:30morning and lock the door and the two of
- 29:33them also worked together to use JC's
- 29:35love of animals to manipulate the little
- 29:37girl giving her kittens that would then
- 29:40mysteriously vanish well I was Tigger
- 29:43and then it was snowy oh I don't know
- 29:47what happened to her another kitten was
- 29:50named Eclipse a girl kitten JC loves so
- 29:54much she asked for paper and a pen to
- 29:56make a little diary she writes how
- 29:58grateful she was for the little kitten
- 30:00and how much the Garrido's told her they
- 30:02paid for her
- 30:03adding last night I started to cry and
- 30:05she heard me she came to me and set next
- 30:08to me and after that I felt a little
- 30:10better she means more to me than my own
- 30:13life I see her love for me and every
- 30:17entry is done
- 30:17with a little heart on a string like a
- 30:20balloon the little kitten eclipse would
- 30:24also disappear during one of kirito's
- 30:26drug-filled runs and when Garrido
- 30:30happened to notice that the little girl
- 30:32had signed her name JC on that journal I
- 30:35actually wrote my name hmm and I tore it
- 30:39out right because he said you had to yes
- 30:43that was the last time the last time for
- 30:4718 years she'd be allowed to write or
- 30:50speak her name losing her name and
- 30:53fighting to hold on to the memory of the
- 30:55face that is keeping her alive her mom
- 30:58wanted to see her more than anything and
- 31:01worried you'd forget where he died
- 31:04forget as she looked like or what she
- 31:08sounded like would she forget me would
- 31:12she want you after this
- 31:18yeah I mean I mom now you know I know
- 31:21that she never forgot about me cuz I can
- 31:24never forget about my kids but you know
- 31:27when you're a kid and you think you're
- 31:29easily forget forgettable and and her
- 31:32mother Terri is also fighting to hold on
- 31:34as one year passes and then a second
- 31:37she's alone except for a couple of her
- 31:40friends well quit their jobs to help her
- 31:42on TV
- 31:44she shows Jaycees room untouched since
- 31:46her disappearance
- 31:47it's where Terri says she goes to pray
- 31:50every night even though she's not here
- 31:52she's still in my heart and when 34
- 31:55months have passed 1,000 29 days since
- 31:59Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped the
- 32:01handcuffs occasionally come off but
- 32:03she's still always locked in a bolted
- 32:05room one night the Garrido's are with
- 32:08her they are watching the 10
- 32:10commandments on TV for the first time
- 32:12they bring her cooked food corned beef
- 32:14and cabbage
- 32:15it's Easter 1994 and then they tell you
- 32:19they think you're pregnant yeah four and
- 32:24a half months pregnant thirteen years
- 32:27old as we said by now Jaycee Dugard has
- 32:34been in captivity for 1029 days a sketch
- 32:38artist tried to imagine the little girl
- 32:40now entering her teens but those posters
- 32:44were weather and fall away by now her
- 32:47mother is holding rummage sales to raise
- 32:48money for private investigators she is
- 32:51sending more than a million flyers
- 32:53across the United States while working
- 32:55and raising Jaycees little sister Shana
- 32:57and two hours away in the backyard
- 33:00Jaycee Dugard is pregnant still bolted
- 33:02in not allowed to go outside sit in the
- 33:05Sun or see the sky she learned the link
- 33:08between sex and pregnancy from TV did
- 33:11you have any idea what it meant to give
- 33:12birth no I had never seen it happen
- 33:16there was this show that he would talk
- 33:18about a lot growing up baby or something
- 33:21like that so I watched that and he was
- 33:23watching birthing videos and just
- 33:27learned and he said that he would read
- 33:29up on it
- 33:31he would do it yeah she makes up little
- 33:33stories she tells to the baby growing in
- 33:36her stomach August 18 1994 you're how
- 33:39old 14 having a baby in a backyard yep I
- 33:45did she is locked in alone watching dr.
- 33:49Quinn Medicine Woman when she feels the
- 33:51first sharp pain you're in labor and
- 33:53there's nobody there and then knows her
- 33:56locker yeah I was still yeah loft at
- 34:00that time just scared
- 34:04it was terrible pain you know what was
- 34:07going on
- 34:07hadn't seen anybody all day she will be
- 34:10in labor all by herself for hours
- 34:13finally the Garrido's return they give
- 34:15her codeine the labor continues for
- 34:18another 12 hours and with a complication
- 34:20the baby is still inside her Phillip
- 34:23Garrido uses his hand to unwrap the
- 34:26unbel cord from the baby's neck they had
- 34:29seen that on one of the shows that
- 34:32that's what you do because she wasn't
- 34:34coming out so he did that and she came
- 34:37out and then then I saw her she was
- 34:44beautiful
- 34:50I felt like I wasn't alone anymore had
- 34:58somebody that was mine it wasn't alone
- 35:10then I knew I could never let anything
- 35:12happen to her I didn't know how I was
- 35:18gonna do that but I did
- 35:22and when ggarrido takes the baby he held
- 35:27her in a chair and prayed that he would
- 35:29never hurt her
- 35:29was it your terror yeah every day three
- 35:34years later another birth in the
- 35:36backyard we have a second person to love
- 35:40and to love me and maybe another little
- 35:44piece of my mom to hang on to I wanted
- 35:49to see her more than anything every day
- 35:51the beginning like I said I would cry
- 35:55every day and being hardest when I would
- 35:59think about her and what she was doing
- 36:01and then trying to convince myself she
- 36:04was better without me easier you know
- 36:08she had Shayna but if I wanted her and
- 36:14for the next two years as doctors
- 36:17professed to monitor ggarrido along with
- 36:19all those parole officers who come into
- 36:21the house Dugard is in the back locked
- 36:25up in a room with two little girls
- 36:27taking care of them with what she's
- 36:29learned from TV breastfeeding first one
- 36:32than the other
- 36:33Garrido she writes in the book still
- 36:35erupts with anger inexplicable rants
- 36:38about her behavior which she tries to
- 36:39keep altering to avoid his moods
- 36:42at other times long lectures about the
- 36:44Bible how he is the chosen one
- 36:46and he continues to make her listen to
- 36:49voices he says he hears with the machine
- 36:52he is built using plastic cups at what
- 36:55are Bionic ears and it's like a sound
- 36:59amplifier and I would have to listen to
- 37:01the air conditioner sit with the
- 37:03headphones for hours
- 37:04tuning in he called it finally when
- 37:07she's a young mother ggarrido builds a
- 37:09fence walling off the entire backyard he
- 37:12gives her a little tent outside she
- 37:15writes about the first time she can walk
- 37:17outside I can feel it the Sun warm on my
- 37:21face and experts who write about
- 37:23survival say near
- 37:24all those who make it find some way to
- 37:26create meaning in the reality of their
- 37:30days
- 37:30amid the trash and squalor you planted
- 37:34yeah a little flowers yeah I like to
- 37:36garden this was your garden yep
- 37:40even little flowers inside the tent and
- 37:43then the girl who once loved books and
- 37:46stories decides for her girls to create
- 37:49a little school we had math social
- 37:51studies English and history was the
- 37:55other one
- 37:56you know it's teach them the best I
- 38:00could I only had a fifth grade education
- 38:01so my math wasn't my strongest suit in a
- 38:05secret act of defiance she saves little
- 38:08scraps of paper and begins writing a
- 38:10journal she manages to hide from him
- 38:12sometimes it still sounds like a child I
- 38:15would live in my own world and I would
- 38:18have superpowers like the power to heal
- 38:21people and animals sometimes she wonders
- 38:24if out in the world there could be a
- 38:26soul mate for her the physical abuse was
- 38:29all I knew but things that I saw on
- 38:32television were so different and you
- 38:35know I mean I don't know look at this I
- 38:38would search the world for the top
- 38:40teachers if I could get out of here and
- 38:43psychologists and doctors and I would
- 38:46organize and we would open a free clinic
- 38:48for homeless people to come and act
- 38:51without time on my hands to think about
- 38:54things I would do and then one day
- 38:57Garrido tells her they need to make
- 38:59Nancy feel better he has decided that
- 39:02from now on the girls will call Nancy
- 39:04their mom they will be told that JC is
- 39:07just their sister at another point she
- 39:10writes in her journal I want to be free
- 39:13to come and go as I please free to say I
- 39:16have a family free free to have my
- 39:20family and next the great mystery
- 39:24why didn't she try to escape
- 39:28think about taking those two girls and
- 39:31running
- 39:31[Music]
- 39:36whiteness door block but the first time
- 39:39ever you're seeing a video obtained by
- 39:41prosecutors of a parole officer going
- 39:44through the house of convicted sex
- 39:46offender Phillip Garrido the voice you
- 39:48hear is Nancy Garrido taunting the
- 39:50officer what does the Perl agent do for
- 39:53his parolee mystic man using office and
- 39:57was disgusted and what you should know
- 39:59is Jaycee Dugard is just thirty feet
- 40:02away on another occasion ggarrido
- 40:04actually lets her into the house she
- 40:06even has a casual exchange with a parole
- 40:08officer not daring to say who she was I
- 40:11actually talked to one of the agents and
- 40:13the agent proceeded to give Phillip his
- 40:16urine test and left this made me feel
- 40:18like didn't really care and as we said
- 40:2360 times parole officers will come to
- 40:25Garrido's house and not question what
- 40:28they are seeing even when a neighbor
- 40:31called 911 said she had seen girls in
- 40:34his yard nothing was done at another
- 40:38point Garrido once had a court-mandated
- 40:40ankle bracelet if officials had studied
- 40:43the data which tracks exact movement
- 40:45they would have seen this a handful of
- 40:48blue dots in the house but look at all
- 40:51those red dots what was he doing all
- 40:53that time in the yard chris cuomo
- 40:58investigates their inaction later and so
- 41:01more and more years go by summers
- 41:04fall/winter Jaycee Dugard 'he's little
- 41:06friends from the fifth grade are now
- 41:08entering college she has been told to
- 41:11take a new name how are you I was Alyssa
- 41:15I like that the actor Alyssa Milano and
- 41:18who's the boss and I couldn't be JC so
- 41:23picked another name and by 1999 the
- 41:26greedo's feel so confident no one will
- 41:29find her they all go out to a kind of
- 41:31carnival called the corn fest
- 41:34we got actual news photos of the crowd
- 41:38that day she's nineteen forty thousand
- 41:41people are there at any of them heard of
- 41:44her seen the Flyers we poured over them
- 41:46hoping she'd be there in plain sight we
- 41:50didn't find her and who were you inside
- 41:52when you would be out among people
- 41:54hiding afraid I'm gonna make a mistake
- 41:57and do something wrong and no one seemed
- 42:00to see you no nobody noticed she said by
- 42:04then she'd gained weight and her blond
- 42:06hair had turned brown did you know that
- 42:08there was a an artist attempt to imagine
- 42:13what you look like
- 42:15what do you think I don't think that
- 42:17looks like me
- 42:20which brings us to one of the great
- 42:22mysteries of human behavior if she was
- 42:24out in the world
- 42:26why didn't she run what was the
- 42:28psychological stun-gun that paralyzed
- 42:31her action even when the doors were
- 42:33unlocked classic classic manipulation
- 42:38being responsible for everything from
- 42:41time to food to human companionship and
- 42:44you see it over and over again you do
- 42:48see it over and over again
- 42:49her therapist Rebecca Bailey says what
- 42:52happened is not Stockholm Syndrome but a
- 42:54kind of coping an adaptive helplessness
- 42:57it comes with years of abuse when the
- 43:00emotional handcuffs become stronger than
- 43:02the tangible ones in the hands of a
- 43:04predatory expert he was a mastermind and
- 43:07in his narcissism was able to weave
- 43:13people into believing his stories he had
- 43:16a prior rape in which he had held a
- 43:18woman captive and was able to talk a
- 43:21police officer away from the sight
- 43:24convinced initially the police officer
- 43:28that this naked woman screaming was in
- 43:30fact enjoying being with him after the
- 43:34children were born Burrito stopped the
- 43:37sexual relationship did you think of him
- 43:39as father father to the kids know
- 43:43somebody who and always knew what
- 43:47I depended on him for everything and it
- 43:49seems you can almost see something in
- 43:51her face when she tries to go back to
- 43:53that time searching for reasons to just
- 43:56think about taking those two girls and
- 43:59running I'm sure I did but it wasn't
- 44:04something I felt I could do because the
- 44:08situation felt like it wasn't an option
- 44:15found a house to explain it there was no
- 44:20leaving what would it have taken for you
- 44:24to believe you could leave I've asked
- 44:27myself that question many times the mind
- 44:30manipulation plus the physical abuse I
- 44:35suffered in the beginning there was no
- 44:38leaving maybe if one of the girls were
- 44:41being hurt and everyone who thinks that
- 44:44that the total impulse would just scoop
- 44:47them up to run doesen't they were safe I
- 44:50was being told that the outside world
- 44:52was dangerous
- 44:54ironically enough filled with rapists
- 44:57yeah pedophiles I couldn't protect them
- 44:59out there I it's like what I knew was
- 45:04safe the unknown that was out there was
- 45:08terrifying
- 45:09especially when thinking about the girls
- 45:13you can see it at her journal she writes
- 45:15about her fear and wonders how she could
- 45:18live survive on the outside he helped
- 45:22her to believe if he was the only person
- 45:25that she could be safe with she had
- 45:28parole officers coming to the house
- 45:30right now searching the house and at
- 45:32some point it's logical to assume you
- 45:34would say does anybody even know that
- 45:36I'm here or even care that I'm here and
- 45:39even when she is now in her 20s burrito
- 45:42has started a printing business JC is
- 45:44designing cards and invitation on a
- 45:46computer with internet her mother on her
- 45:49mind her hands still unable to move he
- 45:53said that the computer keeps track of
- 45:55all that stuff and he could see that
- 45:58I'm having my clicks a couple of clicks
- 46:01but you never I never did it
- 46:04something always held me back it was
- 46:07like I still had those handcuffs on do
- 46:09you think you'll ever understand it why
- 46:12you didn't leave
- 46:13didn't think so in fact after she was
- 46:16found one of her first questions to her
- 46:18therapist was is he crazy or am i but
- 46:22the real miracle is that even as Jaycee
- 46:24Dugard was drowning in the undertow of
- 46:26ggarrido and his control
- 46:28she kept clinging fiercely to fading
- 46:31memories of mother love and hope she
- 46:35kept her hope I don't know how she did
- 46:39that you know how did I keep my hope how
- 46:40does she keep her hope and look again at
- 46:43those little secret journals she makes a
- 46:46list of dreams for the future
- 46:49first thing on the list see my mom see
- 46:52my mom and ride in a hot-air balloon
- 46:57still ahead the impossible happens to
- 47:00campus cops do what an entire federal
- 47:02bureaucracy had failed to do they will
- 47:05make the move that will catch two
- 47:07predators and save a life Jaycee Dugard
- 47:10after 18 years is about to hear her
- 47:13mother's voice I'm so happy I'm so happy
- 47:16[Music]
- 47:19it has now been 18 years Phillip Garrido
- 47:22is increasingly taking his delusions
- 47:25public he decides to go proselytized on
- 47:27the campus of UC Berkeley and take his
- 47:30daughter's with him thinking they'll
- 47:32draw more attention to his grandiose
- 47:34ideas and there are two people who do
- 47:37pay attention who would have thought
- 47:39after all the outrageous carelessness by
- 47:42law enforcement to campus police women
- 47:45will be the gladiators who step in at UC
- 47:52Berkeley Phillip Garrido is posting
- 47:53flyers about his wild religious beliefs
- 47:56all around the campus with him two young
- 47:59women who seem withdrawn not happy and
- 48:02after 18 years of law enforcement
- 48:05inertia it would be campus police
- 48:07officers Lisa Campbell and officer Allie
- 48:10Jacobs who say they simply didn't like
- 48:13what they saw one of the main things
- 48:15with me was the concern for that for the
- 48:17girls from him on their standpoint they
- 48:19weren't giving me any kind of sign that
- 48:21they were in trouble but yet I felt that
- 48:24they were we knew that he was way out
- 48:26there but we just didn't know what we
- 48:27had no way of envisioning that it would
- 48:29be as big as it was the two women
- 48:31engaged Garrido and conversation
- 48:33pretending to be interested in his
- 48:35delusional rant and as soon as they
- 48:37could
- 48:37ran to check who he was they discovered
- 48:40in horror is a sex offender and I'm
- 48:42thinking he's on parole he's huge and
- 48:46he's got this record this this violent
- 48:48record this is not gonna be good
- 48:50mother's instinct female intuition and
- 48:53cops just plain doing their job just how
- 48:57incredible it is that they spoke up
- 48:59about something they thought was wrong
- 49:01even if they would have been wrong they
- 49:03still spoke up and they saved us
- 49:07something they couldn't do for myself
- 49:09by this time August 2009 Jaycee Dugard
- 49:12had long since stopped looking at the
- 49:14moon as she used to do with her mother
- 49:16it was just too painful but mysteriously
- 49:19this
- 49:20for some reason I looked up and the moon
- 49:23was just bright and beautiful and 120
- 49:30miles away someone else has also grown
- 49:3318 years older eighteen years of
- 49:36searching suffering struggling to hold
- 49:39on to hope Jaycee Dugard 'he's mother
- 49:41also looks up i had gone to my second
- 49:45job and got home about 8:30 9 o'clock
- 49:50and i was tired and hungry and wore out
- 49:52and i remember looking up at the moon
- 49:55and I said ok Jace where are you where
- 50:00the hell are you on August 26
- 50:02parole officers will summon Phillip
- 50:05Garrido to come in his family comes with
- 50:08him but there's a problem a frightened
- 50:10do guard keep sticking to the script
- 50:12Garrido has given her and keeps saying
- 50:13her name is Alyssa the family is
- 50:16separated the questioning continues and
- 50:19surprisingly late in the day the first
- 50:22person to crack is Phillip Garrido
- 50:24himself for some reason he confesses to
- 50:27kidnapping it's not clear who
- 50:30as he leaves he first winks at her and
- 50:34then with dead eyes says a non-lawyer
- 50:37and it's at this point a police officer
- 50:40takes her aside and asks her kindly
- 50:43repeatedly who are you what's your name
- 50:48here from her book is what happens next
- 50:52she asked for my name again I said I
- 50:55couldn't say it I wasn't trying to be
- 50:57difficult I told her I hadn't said it in
- 50:5918 years I told her I would write it
- 51:02down and that's what I did you are
- 51:07looking at the piece of paper on which
- 51:09Jaycee Dugard shakily finally wrote the
- 51:14letters of her name
- 51:17Jaycee Lee Dugard it was she says like
- 51:21freaking an evil spell your name my name
- 51:27and it was like
- 51:29[Music]
- 51:31like a piece of me came back and the
- 51:34flame that had been extinguished
- 51:36immediately they ignites and they're
- 51:41like you can see your mom and I like I
- 51:43can I can see my mom it was like a
- 51:48question to them you know I can you're
- 51:51at the office
- 51:52the phone rings unbelievable absolutely
- 51:55unbelievable and then it was disbelief I
- 51:58thought no you're joking
- 51:59don't don't do this to me this is not
- 52:01funny and I remember you shouting and I
- 52:10was crying you know and you're crying
- 52:11you can't speak oh I just said come
- 52:15quick I remember saying come come and I
- 52:18remember telling you I'm coming baby I'm
- 52:20coming and then I said I said something
- 52:25about having babies I didn't mean I had
- 52:27babies and then I had had babies it was
- 52:30I didn't know what to say
- 52:31it was like unbelievable and when you
- 52:34heard she has a daughter baby so I'm
- 52:36thinking babies okay I can deal with
- 52:40this those babies were by now 15 and 11
- 52:45the first night the police officer let
- 52:48them stay in a motel JC wants her mother
- 52:50and sister so much she can't sleep I
- 52:53woke the girls up at night I said I'm so
- 52:57happy I was so happy like I can't wait
- 52:59anymore I don't care if they're sleeping
- 53:01in so I ran down the hall I forgot the
- 53:03motel key I walk there they're so happy
- 53:05I'm so happy so happy and stunningly
- 53:10even now two years later with all that
- 53:13time loss she insists life is too short
- 53:15for a moment of bitterness or rage I
- 53:19don't feel like I have this rage inside
- 53:20of me that's building why not
- 53:25how can I refuse to let him have that he
- 53:29can't have me you mean if you felt rage
- 53:33it would mean he hadn't won I think I
- 53:36have enough hate in my heart for the
- 53:39both of us I hate that he took her life
- 53:43away and that makes me sad I'm sorry
- 53:46baby
- 53:49I hate that he stole our from me he
- 53:53ripped out a piece of my heart and
- 54:06he stole my baby
- 54:12he stole your childhood he stole your
- 54:15adolescence he's still high school proms
- 54:17and pictures and memories then but he
- 54:23didn't get all of me know still to come
- 54:29Jaycee Dugard victory her daughters the
- 54:32plans for the future
- 54:33and the things we can all learn from how
- 54:36she healed and when we come back they
- 54:39hear a report their kids living in a
- 54:40backyard and they're not curious at all
- 54:42it seems impossible to common sense
- 54:44Chris Cuomo takes up a mother's
- 54:47challenge to track down those who let
- 54:49this happen and to see anything has
- 54:52changed and there is a question we've
- 54:57been asking and we suspect you are
- 54:58asking it 260 visits by parole officers
- 55:02to the house and no one ever found her
- 55:04how is it possible the justice system
- 55:06and the law enforcement system let her
- 55:08down so badly Chris Cuomo is here now
- 55:10he's going to investigate justice it is
- 55:13too important a question to leave
- 55:15unanswered and when we come back you
- 55:17will see just how many opportunities
- 55:19there were to save a stolen life as we
- 55:24return the story of Jaycee Dugard a
- 55:26convicted pedophile Phillip Garrido and
- 55:29his wife Nancy stole her childhood her
- 55:31name and held her 18 years in a maze of
- 55:34shacks and tents and as you'll see when
- 55:38we continue over and over again she
- 55:40could have been saved how did you stay
- 55:43sane you just do what you have to do to
- 55:47survive
- 55:48two times she will give birth in the
- 55:50backyard
- 55:5260 times the parole officers come to the
- 55:54house and see nothing this is
- 55:57never-before-seen video of one officer
- 55:59missing what is right in front of him
- 56:02[Music]
- 56:04and now a Chris Cuomo investigation of a
- 56:07colossal failure mr. Messner we just
- 56:09want to ask you a question they hear a
- 56:11report their kids living in a back yard
- 56:13and they're not curious at all that's
- 56:15what I don't get it seems impossible to
- 56:17common sense and what about Jaycee
- 56:19Dugard life today what does she see when
- 56:22she looks at her daughter and more from
- 56:25the mother who wants changes to protect
- 56:27other families the mother the daughter
- 56:30who never gave up hope and from a secret
- 56:33diary a girl gets a chance to do what
- 56:36she always dreamed good evening once
- 56:40again I'm Diane Sawyer with Chris Cuomo
- 56:42and this is the story of Jaycee Dugard a
- 56:44stolen life and as we continue chris is
- 56:48going to investigate the cascade of
- 56:50failures by the system supposed to
- 56:52protect her Diane in the 18 years that
- 56:55Jaycee Dugard was held captive there
- 56:57were so many failures of the American
- 56:59justice system so many chances to catch
- 57:01the man who should have been a prisoner
- 57:03so we set out to find the people
- 57:05involved we called and wrote them and
- 57:08when they wouldn't talk to us we found
- 57:10them and along the way we found video -
- 57:13that's never been seen parole visits
- 57:15that were epic failures scenes that will
- 57:18chill you to the bone
- 57:20[Music]
- 57:23Philip and Nancy Garrido are preparing
- 57:25to make a home movie you will not
- 57:27believe it looks like the video will
- 57:31capture Phillip Garrido playing a song
- 57:33on his guitar but the guitar playing is
- 57:36just a ruse you look like you're putting
- 57:39at me look at where they are behind them
- 57:42is a playground the burritos are there
- 57:45to get shots of young children to feed
- 57:48Phillip burritos sick appetites really
- 57:54good this is going on despite the fact
- 57:57that Phillip Garrido is supposedly under
- 57:59the watchful eye of federal parole
- 58:01officers for his past history of sexual
- 58:04violence our investigation reveals that
- 58:08this is a metaphor for decades of
- 58:11neglect by state and federal parole
- 58:13officials basically allowing Phillip
- 58:15Garrido to do as he pleased including
- 58:18taking Jaycee Dugard prisoner pain felt
- 58:22most sharply by the one person who never
- 58:24lost sight of the situation JC's mom how
- 58:29could anybody with a heart or a
- 58:31conscience or a soul for that matter
- 58:34taken innocent child away from its
- 58:37mother this is the first time Terri
- 58:40Provins searing words have been heard
- 58:41outside court the pain and outrage
- 58:44she spoke directly to the Garrido's a
- 58:47mother who demands change I'm appalled
- 58:50I'm I'm disgusted in something needs to
- 58:54change how much of the outrage goes to
- 58:58fixing this situation I think that's
- 59:01what it is I think that's what fuels the
- 59:04fire the outrage that I have the anger
- 59:08that I have
- 59:11burritos terrifying career of sexual
- 59:13crimes begins in April 1972 Vietnam is
- 59:18raging students are protesting at UC
- 59:20Berkeley and just 40 miles away in the
- 59:23small town of Antioch 21 year old
- 59:26Phillip Garrido is waging a war of his
- 59:28own against young women charged with
- 59:31drugging a 14 year old girl and
- 59:33repeatedly raping her the case is
- 59:36dropped after the victim refuses to
- 59:38testify
- 59:39leaving Dorito free to strike again and
- 59:42he does I just started screaming oh my
- 59:45god oh my god that's him that's the guy
- 59:48who kidnapped me
- 59:49news of Garrido's 2009 arrest brought
- 59:53back a flood of dark memories for Katie
- 59:55Calloway Hall in November of 1976 Katie
- 59:59then 25 years old made the terrible
- 1:00:01mistake of giving a lift to ggarrido
- 1:00:03outside South Lake Tahoe California what
- 1:00:07I saw was a very tall slender
- 1:00:10normal-looking white male he didn't look
- 1:00:14like what I thought a rapist would look
- 1:00:16like obviously she was horribly wrong
- 1:00:20burrito hogtied and handcuffed Katie and
- 1:00:23drove her over 60 miles to Reno Nevada
- 1:00:26to a shed at this storage facility where
- 1:00:28she says he repeatedly raped her over an
- 1:00:31eight-hour period he had just kind of a
- 1:00:34faraway look in his eyes he looked at me
- 1:00:36like I was an object katie was saved
- 1:00:39when a police officer on patrol noticed
- 1:00:42a broken lock on the shed and went
- 1:00:44inside to investigate burrito was soon
- 1:00:47sentenced to 50 years in federal prison
- 1:00:49for kidnapping and five years to life in
- 1:00:52nevada for rape then came the first in a
- 1:00:56line of system failures after serving
- 1:00:59just 11 of his 50-year sentence burrito
- 1:01:02is released after two parole examiner's
- 1:01:05interview him for reportedly just 35
- 1:01:07minutes but burrito wasn't a free man
- 1:01:10yet he must serve his rape sentence in
- 1:01:13nevada but just eight months later a
- 1:01:15second failure a Nevada parole board
- 1:01:18also decides to let ggarrido
- 1:01:20out of prison the reason not
- 1:01:23contributing to be
- 1:01:24menace to the health safety and morals
- 1:01:27of society these bizarre decisions were
- 1:01:31made decades ago our phone call lead to
- 1:01:35dead ends or refusals to comment so we
- 1:01:38followed the trail to state prison
- 1:01:40warden Brenda burns who signed off on
- 1:01:42burritos release we found her in
- 1:01:45retirement watering her lawn and with a
- 1:01:48little interest in the dreadful mistakes
- 1:01:50of the past we want to know why you
- 1:01:52released Phillip Garrido so early from
- 1:01:53prison were you surprised when you heard
- 1:02:05that he kidnapped Jaycee Dugard
- 1:02:13August 1988 garita walks out of prison a
- 1:02:17free man but he's now supposedly under
- 1:02:19intense federal supervision as a high
- 1:02:22risk offender parole is supposed to be
- 1:02:25release
- 1:02:26conditioned on regular check-ins at home
- 1:02:28and the parole office
- 1:02:30federal officials actually tour
- 1:02:33Garrido's house in Antioch discovering
- 1:02:35the hidden backyard with structures like
- 1:02:38this eerily similar to the shed where he
- 1:02:41raped Katie Hall yet no alarms went off
- 1:02:46just a month after that visit in June of
- 1:02:491991 ggarrido kidnaps 11 year-old Jaycee
- 1:02:52Dugard outside her home in South Lake
- 1:02:54Tahoe California and stashes her in the
- 1:02:59backyard in that same shed years pass JC
- 1:03:06gives birth to Garrido's two daughters
- 1:03:08and yet parole officers remain oblivious
- 1:03:11to the former Inspector General of
- 1:03:13California who investigated what went
- 1:03:16wrong with Garrido's parole this is
- 1:03:18outrageous a federal parole agent had
- 1:03:21not only been in the backyard but had
- 1:03:23been inside what Greedo was calling a
- 1:03:25soundstage or a soundproof room for
- 1:03:29recording so they knew it was there so
- 1:03:31the federal government knew then in
- 1:03:34March 1999 another major failure after
- 1:03:38just 11 years of supervision federal
- 1:03:41probation officials again give Dorito a
- 1:03:43huge break cutting short his parole for
- 1:03:46of all things good behavior in this
- 1:03:49letter
- 1:03:49senior US probation officer Mark Messner
- 1:03:52thanks ggarrido for his cooperation over
- 1:03:55this period of supervision and hopes
- 1:03:58that he will continue to do well mr.
- 1:04:01Messner we pay Messner a visit to find
- 1:04:04out why Garrido's federal parole was cut
- 1:04:06short given his violent and unstable
- 1:04:08background mr. Messner we just want to
- 1:04:11ask you a question Messner drives off
- 1:04:15without answering our questions could
- 1:04:17the federal government really ignore a
- 1:04:19situation like this we sent letters to
- 1:04:22the head of the US Parole Commission to
- 1:04:24the United States Attorney General to
- 1:04:26the congressional Judiciary Committee
- 1:04:28all asking why the federal government
- 1:04:30failed so miserably in its oversight of
- 1:04:34Phillip Garrido we received one response
- 1:04:37from the US Parole Commission which said
- 1:04:39it couldn't talk to us because it's
- 1:04:42still investigating the matter but in
- 1:04:44fact a federal investigation had already
- 1:04:46been completed months ago and was kept
- 1:04:49confidential fortunately just this past
- 1:04:52Thursday a US District Judge decided to
- 1:04:55release the report which concluded
- 1:04:57Garrido's federal probation office did
- 1:05:00not follow commonly accepted supervision
- 1:05:02practices and had failed to adequately
- 1:05:05supervise Phillip Garrido most chilling
- 1:05:08is this one may fairly question whether
- 1:05:11ggarrido could have been deterred from
- 1:05:13the horrendous acts attributed to him
- 1:05:15had his federal super
- 1:05:17vision been conducted properly the
- 1:05:20report goes on to lay out necessary
- 1:05:21changes but notes that previous
- 1:05:24recommendations had been ignored they
- 1:05:26say we're working on it takes time doing
- 1:05:29our best this is government stuff you
- 1:05:30don't get it will change on our own time
- 1:05:33a fitting response from a mother still
- 1:05:39waiting for answers get any calls from
- 1:05:41the Federal Bureau of parole and all
- 1:05:44that the corrections they call you yeah
- 1:05:46they say sorry no they say we figured it
- 1:05:50out doing it differently next time
- 1:05:52no but that will be a battle within
- 1:05:55itself I need change and I need
- 1:05:58something to be different and this
- 1:06:02never-before-seen video will open eyes
- 1:06:04about how much change is needed
- 1:06:07come inside Garrido's home during an
- 1:06:09actual visit with a California parole
- 1:06:12official you'll see just how close
- 1:06:16officials got to discovering doritoes
- 1:06:19secret when we come back find out how
- 1:06:26many chances
- 1:06:27authorities had to rescue Jaycee Dugard
- 1:06:32[Music]
- 1:06:37this is video california parole
- 1:06:40officials don't want you to see Phillip
- 1:06:42Garrido bare chested and brazen leading
- 1:06:45an officer as he checks out Garrido's
- 1:06:47house the officers face was blurred by
- 1:06:50authorities to protect the identity of
- 1:06:52one of the many who failed to see what
- 1:06:55was right in front of them okay-y his
- 1:06:56door block can you move that out and
- 1:06:58open the door the video is being shot by
- 1:07:00Garrido's wife Nancy who is helping her
- 1:07:03husband manipulate the visiting officer
- 1:07:05what does the parole agent do for his
- 1:07:08parolees discuss appropriate time during
- 1:07:13a search if you stay in his front room
- 1:07:16and I don't have to place you in
- 1:07:17restraints because right now search in
- 1:07:19the house tough talk but watch as the
- 1:07:22officer is distracted by the Garrido's
- 1:07:24chattering about doing nothing wrong and
- 1:07:26appears to follow the path burrito lays
- 1:07:29out
- 1:07:30doing everything I know it no further
- 1:07:34questions coming 2.2 coming to the
- 1:07:36office we won't be in Italy neighbor
- 1:07:38[ __ ] Jimmy likes it alright both of you
- 1:07:40guys we can like says he's an arrogant
- 1:07:42little guy isn't he the officer seems to
- 1:07:44want to escape the pestering and leaves
- 1:07:46if he had just walked into the backyard
- 1:07:49he could have found JC and her two
- 1:07:52helpless children instead the Garrido's
- 1:07:55find new confidence that they can evade
- 1:07:58authorities whenever they want when you
- 1:08:01look at 18 years of this like all these
- 1:08:03different tentacles of this system
- 1:08:06that's supposed to be in this business
- 1:08:07of watching people like this what are
- 1:08:10your thoughts on it I think a lot of
- 1:08:12mistakes were made I think Jase could
- 1:08:16have been home a lot sooner had somebody
- 1:08:19cared enough and slowed down to look at
- 1:08:23the real what was really going on bottom
- 1:08:25line at every level the people who were
- 1:08:27supposed to watch burrito failed our
- 1:08:30investigation reveals that almost no one
- 1:08:33wants to answer for the fact that
- 1:08:34officials either didn't know didn't care
- 1:08:37or didn't act to stop Phillip Garrido
- 1:08:40and his wife Nancy JC and her kids
- 1:08:43weren't hidden in some remote hideout
- 1:08:45they were right behind that fence in
- 1:08:47that backyard maybe it's not so easily
- 1:08:49visible but neighbors in 2006 said there
- 1:08:53were kids living in that backyard and
- 1:08:54nothing happened and probation officers
- 1:08:57had 60 home visits but never discovered
- 1:09:01what was right behind that fence to
- 1:09:04train law enforcement officers it should
- 1:09:07have been evident that something was
- 1:09:08going on out behind the house
- 1:09:10David Shaw the former California
- 1:09:11inspector general prepared a scathing
- 1:09:14115 page report detailing a litany of
- 1:09:17failures by state parole officials top
- 1:09:20of the list all the visits with ggarrido
- 1:09:23by officials each yellow box marks a
- 1:09:26visit to Garrido's house each one a
- 1:09:29missed opportunity parole officials
- 1:09:31never interviewed Garrido's neighbors
- 1:09:33who had often spotted JC and her two
- 1:09:36daughters agents also never questioned
- 1:09:39why there was a network of utility wires
- 1:09:41connecting the house to the backyard
- 1:09:43complex
- 1:09:44burrito was fitted for a GPS device in
- 1:09:47April 2008 tracking all movements each
- 1:09:51red dot marks his location in time look
- 1:09:54at how much time he was spending in the
- 1:09:56part of the back yard
- 1:09:57they never searched worst of all says
- 1:10:00Shaw
- 1:10:01burrito often explained away reports and
- 1:10:03sightings of the children in his home by
- 1:10:06saying they were his brother's children
- 1:10:08it was very easy to dispel this story
- 1:10:11that he was telling we called his
- 1:10:13brother and spoke to his brother and the
- 1:10:14brother didn't have any children but one
- 1:10:16phone call hello brother of crazy
- 1:10:19Phillip Garrido do you have KITT No
- 1:10:21thank you very much have a good day hang
- 1:10:23up the phone go and rest Phillip Garrido
- 1:10:25and find out where the kids are right we
- 1:10:28thought that an agent could have dug
- 1:10:30just a little bit deeper and found out
- 1:10:32that those weren't his brothers children
- 1:10:34and if not then who do they belong to
- 1:10:36meanwhile over the years ggarrido
- 1:10:39apparently descended into madness with
- 1:10:42wild ideas about hearing angels he even
- 1:10:45developed a device to channel God's
- 1:10:47voice Tim Allen a contractor who bought
- 1:10:50business cards from ggarrido found the
- 1:10:53signs obvious yeah he would come in here
- 1:10:55and he was just rambling I would tell
- 1:10:58the girls hey when you see Phillip come
- 1:11:00in tell him I'm not here does it
- 1:11:03surprise you that they didn't pick up on
- 1:11:04what was going on with him yes it
- 1:11:07surprises me that they as soon as you
- 1:11:10would talk to him you would think you
- 1:11:11know this is a guy that needs some help
- 1:11:12November 2006 perhaps the most egregious
- 1:11:16failure of all a neighbor calls 911
- 1:11:20complains children are living in tents
- 1:11:22in burritos backyard the caller also
- 1:11:25describes ggarrido
- 1:11:26as psychotic with a sexual addiction
- 1:11:29this time it's not parole officers but a
- 1:11:32sheriff's deputy who shows up at
- 1:11:33Garrido's house but after a brief chat
- 1:11:36the deputy turns and leaves never even
- 1:11:39bothering to check out the backyard
- 1:11:41despite the neighbors complained we
- 1:11:43asked then sheriff Warren Roop what went
- 1:11:46wrong here they hear a report their kids
- 1:11:49living in a backyard they're not curious
- 1:11:51at all yes that's the whole reason he's
- 1:11:53there is to look for kids in the
- 1:11:54backyard this comes back to
- 1:11:58what you know human flaw pilot pilot
- 1:12:01error
- 1:12:02I am of the opinion that he should have
- 1:12:04had the professional curiosity to to
- 1:12:09push beyond just a conversation on the
- 1:12:12front porch but how did he explain you
- 1:12:14talked to this person right I did not
- 1:12:16talk to this person no as the sheriff
- 1:12:18you never talked to your deputy about
- 1:12:19this I did not talk to this person
- 1:12:21where was your professional curiosity
- 1:12:22Sheriff when you knew that this was your
- 1:12:24deputy why didn't you say I want to talk
- 1:12:25to this guy I want to find out what was
- 1:12:27going on in his head that he didn't
- 1:12:29think to go into the backyard the those
- 1:12:32questions were asked I mean the fact
- 1:12:34that I did not personally talk to him is
- 1:12:36not nor should not be seen as a lack of
- 1:12:39interest or a lack of curiosity but in
- 1:12:41fact it is symptomatic of the neglect
- 1:12:43that contributed to Jaycee Dugard 18
- 1:12:46year nightmare in no small irony the
- 1:12:49officers who helped capture ggarrido had
- 1:12:51nothing to do with his probation too
- 1:12:54suspicious UC Berkeley campus officers
- 1:12:57checked up on burrito after seeing him
- 1:12:59on campus with his two daughters and
- 1:13:01that led to his arrest in JC's rescue
- 1:13:05all of the forces that came together
- 1:13:07work together for the good and the
- 1:13:09result was that we found JC 18 years
- 1:13:11later with her daughter's alive most
- 1:13:14importantly on that day was a curiosity
- 1:13:16that was uncommon in the case of Phillip
- 1:13:20Garrido the curiosity that it bothered
- 1:13:23you that the way he was and with these
- 1:13:26girls didn't work I think that it comes
- 1:13:29down to life experience you know having
- 1:13:32that woman's intuition mother's
- 1:13:33intuition work experience life
- 1:13:34experience being in the right place at
- 1:13:36the right time and having all those
- 1:13:37things is what you know made this happy
- 1:13:41ending today we are joined by our
- 1:13:42incredibly after the arrest California
- 1:13:45parole officials held a press conference
- 1:13:47to give themselves credit for cracking
- 1:13:50the case very proud today to report the
- 1:13:53Department of Corrections and
- 1:13:54Rehabilitation 's parole division for
- 1:13:57their work and solving the 18-year old
- 1:13:58mystery of the disappearance of Jaycee
- 1:14:01Lee Dugard these officials declined
- 1:14:04requests to sit in the chair and answer
- 1:14:07our questions however the former
- 1:14:09inspector general's report painted a
- 1:14:10very
- 1:14:11different picture of their actions an
- 1:14:13abject failure that demanded not
- 1:14:16celebration but major reform in
- 1:14:18California's parole system people have
- 1:14:21described the Jaycee Dugard case for the
- 1:14:24state system as the 911 of homeland
- 1:14:27security that this was the big thing
- 1:14:30that we should have seen coming
- 1:14:31everything must change fair analysis I
- 1:14:34think it's a it's a decent analogy
- 1:14:36clearly it woke everyone up in the
- 1:14:39system that something like this could go
- 1:14:41on with an offender who I think largely
- 1:14:44we had ignored in law enforcement in the
- 1:14:47wake of the do guard case California
- 1:14:49says changes have been made in line with
- 1:14:51Shaw's report such as criminal
- 1:14:54background information being available
- 1:14:55to all law enforcement and specific
- 1:14:59training for how to check thoroughly on
- 1:15:01all sex offenders the state also paid 20
- 1:15:05million dollars to the do guard family
- 1:15:06to settle a claim that it had failed to
- 1:15:09properly supervise ggarrido but money is
- 1:15:12not what the do guards want there's a
- 1:15:15settlement was that enough feel better
- 1:15:17now know what matters more well can't
- 1:15:21you put a price on the 18 years that I
- 1:15:25lost with her the crap she went through
- 1:15:30nobody can put a price up it's not good
- 1:15:36enough that the Garrido's are behind
- 1:15:38bars and will never see the light of day
- 1:15:42again it's not good enough for talent to
- 1:15:46tell me that a change is coming the
- 1:15:52battles just begun and as you well know
- 1:15:57Diane Terry is just the woman to take on
- 1:15:59this fight and I want everyone to see
- 1:16:01this family today here's what's coming
- 1:16:04up when we come back
- 1:16:08[Music]
- 1:16:11[Applause]
- 1:16:18[Music]
- 1:16:26Jaycee Dugard says you can redeem 18
- 1:16:29years of stolen life and return from a
- 1:16:33chamber of horrors for body and mind
- 1:16:37two years after her return she says she
- 1:16:39knows it's better to laugh and cry and
- 1:16:42only fry and as we said she loves that
- 1:16:47it was her little sister Shana now 21
- 1:16:49who had to teach her how to drive so
- 1:16:53tell me about learning to drive I Drive
- 1:16:57I Drive very safely I go to park and I
- 1:17:03get out I'm like oh god I did really
- 1:17:04good and my mom was like but look are
- 1:17:07you packed and I was like taking two
- 1:17:08spaces she even makes a ride joke about
- 1:17:11her impossibly young skin saying how
- 1:17:14about years of no Sun yeah it's how to
- 1:17:18preserve yourself that's the kind of
- 1:17:21humor I used to you know goodbye she
- 1:17:26continues to receive therapy from
- 1:17:28Rebecca Bailey a specialist in family
- 1:17:30reunification Bailey teaches one way to
- 1:17:33vanquish the past is gratitude for the
- 1:17:36pleasures of the present a it's just
- 1:17:41remembering that you get to make dinner
- 1:17:42with a family and have real food instead
- 1:17:45of fast food and nature
- 1:17:48[Applause]
- 1:17:49voices she cares for them as part of her
- 1:17:52therapy mystical tangible symbols of
- 1:17:56trust animals don't lie I mean maybe I
- 1:18:00believe in a higher power but I believe
- 1:18:03in nature and what we see around us as
- 1:18:06healing you know and yes she is
- 1:18:09remarkable I'm not I will I will give
- 1:18:11that I'm confident that the community
- 1:18:16and the support that she has put around
- 1:18:19her since she has come out will carry
- 1:18:22her through whatever bumps in the road
- 1:18:26she hits and I think she has a lot to
- 1:18:29teach all of us she's even creating a
- 1:18:31foundation with some of the money the
- 1:18:33state gave her to help all members of
- 1:18:35families after trauma when something
- 1:18:38happens they don't think about the whole
- 1:18:40family like there's a sister and there's
- 1:18:42a mother and there's other components
- 1:18:45it's not just the victim if you go
- 1:18:47online and you can find the foundation
- 1:18:49with JC's symbol the pinecone charm
- 1:18:52Diane
- 1:18:54you know I want to give you this with
- 1:19:00[Music]
- 1:19:06and the girl who loves words and
- 1:19:09metaphors says maybe a GED even college
- 1:19:13and I asked her about something she
- 1:19:15wrote in a journal when she was captive
- 1:19:17something that ended with happily ever
- 1:19:20after I want to find love one day the
- 1:19:22kind of love I read about okay still
- 1:19:26want that I don't know I don't really
- 1:19:28think about it I'm happy the way my life
- 1:19:30is now I mean if it happens it happens
- 1:19:32if it doesn't I'll still be happy but it
- 1:19:38doesn't seem impossible after what
- 1:19:40you've been through now it doesn't seem
- 1:19:42impossible I think that the prediction
- 1:19:45of the future is not in my job but I
- 1:19:47will tell you that whether there's a man
- 1:19:51in her life or not this woman will love
- 1:19:54fully in her life he has certainly
- 1:19:58infused fear and he has certainly I'm
- 1:20:00not gonna sugarcoat it there are things
- 1:20:02that he has taken away from her that she
- 1:20:05will never have back or get back but she
- 1:20:08has her daughters whom she loves she is
- 1:20:11very protective of their privacy and
- 1:20:14will say only that they're healthy happy
- 1:20:16wonderful students in fact so confident
- 1:20:19heading off to school one of them said
- 1:20:20to her mom you're making me nervous
- 1:20:22she also says they can make their own
- 1:20:25decision about whether to read the book
- 1:20:27but they know what happened their dad
- 1:20:29did strange things and they knew it they
- 1:20:31lived that way for so long then I don't
- 1:20:35really think it was that big of a shock
- 1:20:37to them because they knew their dad it's
- 1:20:42interesting to hear you call him their
- 1:20:44dad he is what he is when you see his
- 1:20:48expressions if it's startling in your
- 1:20:51daughter's surprisingly I don't see it
- 1:20:53in them I see my mom
- 1:20:56I see me I don't see him but she admits
- 1:21:03at the beginning she was worried that
- 1:21:05her own mom would have trouble
- 1:21:07children fathered by that man I don't
- 1:21:10see him in my granddaughters no it is
- 1:21:14not there they are who they are
- 1:21:16and they are so beautiful and I'm very
- 1:21:21proud to be a grandma I love those girls
- 1:21:26with all my heart you don't even have to
- 1:21:31ask that baby
- 1:21:36no they're mine and where are the
- 1:21:44Garrido's they pled guilty Nancy Garrido
- 1:21:46sentenced to 34 years Jaycee Dugard went
- 1:21:50to see her was unmoved by her tears and
- 1:21:53closed the door on her forever
- 1:21:55and as we said Phillip Garrido was
- 1:21:57sentenced to four hundred and thirty one
- 1:21:58years he sits on the same prison row as
- 1:22:01Charles Manson in isolation in a tiny
- 1:22:04cell with a window covered with bars if
- 1:22:09he is watching this if he sees this is
- 1:22:14there anything more either of you wants
- 1:22:17to say to him
- 1:22:18can't steal anything else can't steal
- 1:22:22our love for each other no couldn't take
- 1:22:26that away so in the battle between good
- 1:22:30and evil Goodwin Goodwin's yep
- 1:22:37before we left Harry wanted to send a
- 1:22:39message to you about a morning more than
- 1:22:4118 years ago when her little girl asked
- 1:22:44for a morning kiss I had been late to
- 1:22:47work three Monday mornings in a row and
- 1:22:50I was focused on myself trying to get
- 1:22:54myself out that door so I wouldn't be
- 1:22:56late for work and I chose not to go in
- 1:23:00and kiss my girls goodbye that morning
- 1:23:04wanting to be on time
- 1:23:11for 18 years I kick myself for not
- 1:23:16kissing that baby goodbye how could you
- 1:23:20have no no you can't beat yourself up
- 1:23:22about that no but it's a good lesson you
- 1:23:30know take a minute for your kids
- 1:23:34do that
- 1:23:36extra thing may be an inconvenience to
- 1:23:41you but is important to them
- 1:23:44[Music]
- 1:23:46I am so lucky and blessed for all the
- 1:23:49wonderful things that I do have life is
- 1:23:52too short to think about all the things
- 1:23:53you don't have I had my girls to give me
- 1:23:57strength and my cats to keep me warm at
- 1:23:59night and perhaps deep inside the dim
- 1:24:02hope of seeing my mom again even if it
- 1:24:05is just one thing or person you have to
- 1:24:07be thankful for
- 1:24:09that is enough you're excited very
- 1:24:15scared and out of her journals in
- 1:24:17captivity that list of impossible dreams
- 1:24:20[Music]
- 1:24:23her final words live each day to the
- 1:24:26fullest whatever Life brings you so
- 1:24:31peaceful
