- 0:00you know, my first reaction is one of
- 0:02concern. And the concern comes out of
- 0:06the idea that the that they could
- 0:09actually get in front of the media. And
- 0:13I'm concerned about that because as we
- 0:14know in this business that you don't
- 0:17control the media, the media controls
- 0:20the story. And so I'm concerned about
- 0:22her having her image out so early when
- 0:24it's only been seven weeks. Um, I
- 0:26understand the empowerment experience,
- 0:28but it just is disconcerting for how the
- 0:30paparazzi may react. Are you saying as a
- 0:33psychologist you would have advised
- 0:34against it? I would have. Ernie Allen,
- 0:37you're a president of the National
- 0:40Center for Missing and Exploited
- 0:41Children. What's your reaction?
- 0:44Well, Larry, I I don't agree. I think
- 0:47it's an incredibly empowering moment for
- 0:50JC and her family. There's been massive
- 0:52media interest across this country. We
- 0:55and others have counseledled this family
- 0:57to maintain seclusion, to deal with this
- 1:00difficult reunification process, but I
- 1:02think this is a way of sending a message
- 1:04to the American public that JC Duggard
- 1:07is well, uh, that she's progressing and
- 1:10and I think it's not exploitive. I think
- 1:11it's empowering.
- 1:14JD, could it set off a media frenzy
- 1:16though Paparazzi going up to Northern
- 1:18California now? She did it there. Do it
- 1:20for us. I don't think so. In fact, I
- 1:21think what it does is take a little
- 1:24pressure off this family because as much
- 1:26as we would like to think that people
- 1:28are respectful of people in these
- 1:30situations, I think uh being JC is is
- 1:33very difficult and the fact that there
- 1:35was only this image of her as a small
- 1:37child out there uh led to a lot of
- 1:40speculation. You've seen it yourself,
- 1:42pictures being disseminated in tabloids
- 1:44uh that were not her. A lot of
- 1:46curiosity, money probably being paid to
- 1:48people to try and get this photograph.
- 1:50Um, so I think the family did a very
- 1:52smart thing and I will say because we've
- 1:54dealt with a family for a long time that
- 1:56they have handled this incredibly well
- 1:58and have been extremely careful about
- 2:01exposing not just JC but her daughters
- 2:03to any kind of undue attention. Dr.
- 2:06Gullen, you were nodding as both Mr.
- 2:08Allen and Mr. Haymon spoke, but you
- 2:10disagree with them. Well, I mean, I
- 2:12understand the experience of of it being
- 2:14empowering and having the choice to do
- 2:16it. I'm just concerned that at some
- 2:19point in the near future, you know, I
- 2:22heard someone say, you know, you can't
- 2:23give the beast an orurb and expect them
- 2:26to be satisfied. And and so it it's just
- 2:29my concern is now everyone of those the
- 2:33the paparazzi may be very interested in
- 2:35now getting pictures of the girls
- 2:36because we only saw the back of their
- 2:38heads and and we know how this business
- 2:39works. And so my concern is for the
- 2:42emotional well-being of the of the
- 2:45children. Ernie, does what Dr. Gllum
- 2:48said impress you at all?
- 2:51No, it does. And I think she's right.
- 2:54That's one of the reasons why uh we have
- 2:57worked with this family. We provided the
- 2:59psychologists to help this family
- 3:01through the reunification process. Uh
- 3:03that's why we've tried so hard to make
- 3:05sure that that they can remain secluded,
- 3:08that they can deal with with this
- 3:10difficult challenge. You can't erase
- 3:12these 18 years. uh this is going to be a
- 3:15long a lifelong process of recovery. Uh
- 3:18but but I think what they were trying to
- 3:20do was respond to the overwhelming
- 3:24interest. Uh hundreds of searching
- 3:26families had been inspired and uplifted
- 3:28by this. And so I think this was an
- 3:30effort to send a message that they're
- 3:32doing fine and they're making progress
- 3:34and that there is hope. was I I just
- 3:38want to pick on up on something that you
- 3:39said which is for most of us the
- 3:41experience of missing and exploited
- 3:43children are pictures on the internet or
- 3:46on a milk carton and these are children
- 3:48that are frozen in time and the terrible
- 3:50things that happen to them um are never
- 3:53seen and happy endings aren't seen and I
- 3:56think we're able to present an image of
- 3:58somebody who survived this ordeal who
- 4:00may have a long way to go but who has
- 4:02survived and is seemingly thriving is
- 4:04very important JC spokes person on why
- 4:06JC wanted the world to see her picture
- 4:09today in 60 seconds.
