  2. 0:02Duggard. Of course, she's the young
  3. 0:03woman kidnapped when she was just 11
  4. 0:04years old, held captive for 18 years,
  5. 0:07and she survived unspeakable abuse, gave
  6. 0:09birth to two children in a hidden
  7. 0:11backyard. Dian first book her 5 years
  8. 0:14ago. And now JC has a new book, Freedom,
  9. 0:16My Book, a first. It is out July 12th,
  10. 0:18and she's taking Diane inside the new
  11. 0:20life she's making for herself and her
  12. 0:22family.
  13. 0:24This was JC Lee Duggard when her
  14. 0:26childhood was stolen. This was JC Lee
  15. 0:29Duggard five years ago when she talked
  16. 0:31to me after her rescue.
  17. 0:32My world changed in an instant.
  18. 0:35And this is JC Lee Duggard today.
  19. 0:39Reemerging out of her privacy with
  20. 0:41lessons she's learned in the past 5
  21. 0:43years.

  25. 0:50It's taken a lot of time and it hasn't
  26. 0:53hasn't come overnight. You know, you
  27. 0:55have to put in the hard work and cry and
  28. 0:58for sure laugh about everything that you
  29. 1:00can.
  30. 1:01Her two girls born in that backyard now
  31. 1:03all grown up and thriving.
  32. 1:06They're so resilient and they're
  33. 1:08beautiful and loving.
  34. 1:10She's protecting their privacy. Some of
  35. 1:12their friends don't even know their
  36. 1:14history. And if you met them, you'd be
  37. 1:16stunned by their vibrance, their
  38. 1:18curiosity, and independence. She says
  39. 1:20she wasn't going to let her fear limit
  40. 1:23her children's lives.
  41. 1:24Do we scare our kids into never wanting
  42. 1:27to do anything? Or do we prepare them
  43. 1:30for the worst in life, never knowing if,
  44. 1:33you know, if it's really going to
  45. 1:34happen?
  46. 1:35Do you still call him their dad, which
  47. 1:36you did 5 years ago?
  48. 1:38When I refer to him, no. I think I've
  49. 1:40been calling him Phillip lately,
  50. 1:42actually. You know, when we do talk
  51. 1:44about him,
  52. 1:45Terry Probin, JC's mother,
  53. 1:47if the girls say someday they want to go
  54. 1:51see him.
  55. 1:59Can't bear that.
  56. 2:00It's their decision.
  57. 2:02I would hope they would choose not to.
  58. 2:06Do you worry at some point they'll want
  59. 2:07to see him?
  60. 2:08I want them to make their own choices in
  61. 2:10life. And if that's something that they
  62. 2:11need to do, then
  63. 2:12really you'd be okay with that?
  64. 2:13I wouldn't be okay with it, but I
  65. 2:15wouldn't not let them do it.
  66. 2:18Boy, what a wrenching situation that
  67. 2:20would be. And you can see a lot more of
