- 0:02Most of us assume that the most
- 0:04dangerous moments in life are the
- 0:07obvious ones.
- 0:10An accident, crashes, storms, sudden
- 0:13tragedies.
- 0:15But it's not true.
- 0:18Some of the most dangerous situations
- 0:20are the ones that don't look dangerous
- 0:23at all.
- 0:25There are places in the world where
- 0:27their ground looks firm, solid,
- 0:29trustworthy,
- 0:31and it isn't.
- 0:33Engineers will tell you this long before
- 0:36the collapse. The surface often looks
- 0:39firm. No cracks, no warning signs, just
- 0:43a slow hallowing underneath.
- 0:48Spirituality,
- 0:49that's how people get lost.
- 0:52Spiritually, that's how people get lost.
- 0:56Very few people wake up one morning and
- 0:58decide to ruin their lives.
- 1:01No one plans to drift away from God.
- 1:06No one intends to suffocate spiritually.
- 1:10Usually happens quietly
- 1:13while things look fine.
- 1:17You're functioning. You're productive.
- 1:19You're getting by.
- 1:22But underneath something has shifted.
- 1:26Faith has thinned. Prayer has grown
- 1:30sporadic or if if at all.
- 1:33Sin has become familiar.
- 1:36God has become optional. Or maybe one
- 1:39thing among many things.
- 1:42And then one day, without drama, the
- 1:45ground gives way.
- 1:48That's what spiritual quicksand looks
- 1:50like.
- 1:51Not rebellion, but exhaustion,
- 1:55not defiance, but self-reliance,
- 1:59not hatred for God, but trying to live
- 2:02without him.
- 2:04And here's the cruel paradox.
- 2:08The harder you struggle on your own, the
- 2:11deeper you sink.
- 2:13It's not psychology, that's theology.
- 2:18Because a human heart was never designed
- 2:20to selfs save itself.
- 2:23This is where today's gospel becomes
- 2:26urgent.
- 2:28John the Baptist doesn't offer
- 2:30encouragement. He doesn't give us
- 2:32advice. He doesn't say try harder,
- 2:36do better. What does he do? He points
- 2:40behold the lamb of God.
- 2:43It's not poetic phrase.
- 2:47It's a rescue signal.
- 2:50John is saying, "Stop trying to hold
- 2:52yourself up.
- 2:55Stop trusting what cannot hold your
- 2:57weight. Stop standing where the ground
- 3:00is already collapsing."
- 3:03Because salvation does not come from
- 3:05within your own strength.
- 3:09It comes from someone who stands where
- 3:11you cannot.
- 3:13And that's the scandal of Christianity.
- 3:17Every other world view tells you dig
- 3:20deeper,
- 3:21be stronger, save yourself.
- 3:26The gospel says, "Let yourself be
- 3:28saved."
- 3:31Jesus does not shout instructions from a
- 3:34distance.
- 3:35He steps into an unstable ground with
- 3:38you. He doesn't avoid the collapse. He
- 3:41absorbs it.
- 3:43That's why John calls him the lamb.
- 3:46The lamb of God.
- 3:48A lamb doesn't overpower.
- 3:51It doesn't dominate. A lamb bears
- 3:54weight.
- 3:56The lamb of God carries what you what
- 3:59would crush you.
- 4:02And this is where many people hesitate
- 4:06because being rescued requires
- 4:08surrender.
- 4:10It requires admitting I cannot stand
- 4:12here anymore. or I cannot be in the same
- 4:15same hole.
- 4:17It requires letting go of the illusion
- 4:19of control.
- 4:21It requires deep trust.
- 4:25And trust terrifies when you're already
- 4:27sinking.
- 4:30But listen carefully.
- 4:32Jesus does not save you by pulling you
- 4:35out of your life.
- 4:38He saves you by giving you solid ground
- 4:41within it.
- 4:44That ground has a name. It's called
- 4:47grace.
- 4:49Grace that forgives when you're ashamed.
- 4:52Grace that steadies you when anxiety
- 4:54tightens your chest. Grace that restores
- 4:57you when sin has hollowed you out.
- 5:01Grace that meets you not when you've
- 5:04climbed out, but when you've stopped
- 5:06pretending you can.
- 5:09It's why the church dares to say
- 5:10something astonishing at every mass.
- 5:14Right before communion, when everything
- 5:16is quiet, the priest lifts up the host
- 5:18and says, "Behold the lamb of God."
- 5:22It's not a ritual pause.
- 5:26It's not background noise. This is a
- 5:28moment of decision.
- 5:31It's the church asking you without
- 5:33pressure, without spectacle, where are
- 5:36you standing right now?
- 5:40on your own strengths, on your own old
- 5:43habits, your buried resentments, on
- 5:46distractions that numb you but never
- 5:50save you
- 5:53or are you ready to place your weight
- 5:55somewhere else?
- 5:58Because the truth is this, everyone
- 5:59sinks at some point.
- 6:02strong people,
- 6:04professional, faithful people, young
- 6:06people, older people, priests, parents,
- 6:09students, leaders.
- 6:12The difference is not who sinks.
- 6:15The difference is who reaches out.
- 6:19And here's the hope of today's gospel.
- 6:22You don't have to climb out. You don't
- 6:24have to prove anything. You don't have
- 6:26to be impressive.
- 6:28You only have to let go and reach out
- 6:31for the one who's on solid ground.
- 6:35So as you come forward today, hear the
- 6:37words again, not as poetry,
- 6:40not as a habit, but as an invitation.
- 6:44Behold the lamb of God. Look to him.
- 6:48The one who stands where you cannot. The
- 6:51one who bears what you carry.
- 6:55the one who will not let the ground
- 6:57collapse beneath you.
- 7:00And so my brothers and sisters on this
- 7:02second Sunday of ordinary time as we
- 7:05begin this new season, happy are those
- 7:08who stop fighting.
- 7:10Happy are those the ones who understand
- 7:12where they are and that they are in need
- 7:15of rescue.
- 7:17Stop fighting the ground that cannot
- 7:19hold you. And finally, for once, trust
- 7:23the hand that can reach out and grab you
- 7:26back onto solid ground.
