- 0:00well one of these accounts these
- 0:03documents is that of St
- 0:05Mark the gospel that we're reading from
- 0:10today our opening prayer for today this
- 0:13fourth Sunday in ordinary time is a good
- 0:16one
- 0:17short but to the
- 0:20point it's it's remin
- 0:23introducing to us in this opening
- 0:26chapter is to undo the effects of the
- 0:30fall of Man the event that takes place
- 0:33way back in the Book of Genesis in which
- 0:36man allowed evil to come into the
- 0:39world Jesus God and man will begin to
- 0:43kick out evil and dismantle its
- 0:48effects that his mission and that his
- 0:51first miracle in Mark is an exorcism
- 0:53makes that point very
- 0:57clear that theme of undoing the effects
- 0:59of eil represents the long Arc of The
- 1:02Narrative of the Gospel of Mark one will
- 1:05see many times over this next year but
- 1:09in particular in the reading today we're
- 1:11reminded of something fundamentally
- 1:13important to our Christian
- 1:16faith to set that up let's review a
- 1:19little bit of the background for the
- 1:20passage
- 1:22today we see as Jesus enters the
- 1:25synagogue and begins teaching that this
- 1:27demon reveals itself
- 1:30the whole in this interesting dialogue
- 1:32between Jesus and the demon the spirit
- 1:35addresses Jesus crying out to him and
- 1:37says I know who you are you are the Holy
- 1:40One of
- 1:42God to which Jesus responds by telling
- 1:44him be
- 1:46quiet and he tells him to be quiet
- 1:48before expelling
- 1:51him why did Jesus command the spirit of
- 1:54evil to be quiet after all the spirit
- 1:57was
- 1:58correct Jesus Jesus is the Holy One Of
- 2:01God why not allow him to Proclaim it
- 2:04before the assembly gathered here all
- 2:06those people that were there
- 2:09watching well to answer that question we
- 2:11need to remember what the sin of the
- 2:13demon actually
- 2:15is it's not that they're
- 2:18stupid in fact they're smarter than we
- 2:21are possessing a devastating intellect
- 2:25far beyond ours and it's not that they
- 2:28have a lack of knowledge of the
- 2:29scripture
- 2:30again they know the Bible better than we
- 2:33do they can quote chapters and verses
- 2:36all day
- 2:38long it's not that they denied who Jesus
- 2:41was on the contrary of faith and it was
- 2:44not an act of
- 2:46love was stating a
- 2:49fact that knowledge was not enough
- 2:53simply knowing who Jesus was was
- 2:56insufficient that's why Jesus silences
- 2:58him
- 3:00he would not be proclaimed to the World
- 3:02by a faithless revelation of a
- 3:06demon St Paul writes in this in the
- 3:10Beloved first to the First Corinthian
- 3:12the letter to the Corinthians if I speak
- 3:15in human and Angelic tongues but do not
- 3:18have love I am a resounding gong or
- 3:21clashing
- 3:23symbol and if I have the gift of
- 3:25Prophecy and comprehend all the Min all
- 3:28the Mysteries and all the knowledge but
- 3:30do not have love I am
- 3:34nothing Paul is reminding us of our
- 3:37earlier point that knowledge by itself
- 3:40is
- 3:41insufficient that the smartest most
- 3:44knowledgeable person on Earth with an
- 3:46embittered and unconverted heart is on
- 3:49the same road of predition as those
- 3:53demons so what do we take away from this
- 3:56encounter between Jesus and Jesus Christ
- 3:59a relationship with a concrete person
- 4:02living
- 4:05true and on that love we owe him as Lord
- 4:08and God the love of our neighbor that
- 4:10flows from that love because when we
- 4:12love God with all of our hearts and our
- 4:14minds then we begin to love our neighbor
- 4:18we begin to love those even those who
- 4:20have hurt
- 4:22us because of the deep love we have for
- 4:26Christ we too can repeat the exclamation
- 4:29of the deep demon today we can too we
- 4:30can say Jesus you are the Holy One Of
- 4:34God but if it's not that it's something
- 4:38a devotion a knowing that comes from our
- 4:41heart it's just the
- 4:44intellect it's just like a
- 4:46demon but when we say it it's not simply
- 4:49a statement of fact but an act of
- 4:51devotion and
- 4:53love the knowledge that we gain about
- 4:55our faith or about theology
- 4:58or which we again lift up to the Lord we
- 5:01pray that God help us to carry out his
- 5:04greatest
- 5:06commandment because when I know
- 5:09Jesus know him here but more importantly
- 5:12know him in the heart when I truly know
- 5:16Jesus then I can love him with all my
- 5:19heart and all my mind and because I love
- 5:21him with all my mind and all my heart
- 5:23then I can now love my
- 5:25neighbor to love God not only with
- 5:28knowledge but with our mind minds but
- 5:30also with a great devotion of our hearts
- 5:34amen
- 5:35amen
