  13. 0:24clapper apologized in a letter to senate
  14. 0:26intelligence committee chairwoman dianne
  15. 0:28feinstein that was posted tuesday on the
  16. 0:30website of clapper's office
  17. 0:33clapper said in the june 21st letter
  18. 0:35that his answer was clearly erroneous
  19. 0:38americans have long known the united
  20. 0:40states implemented surveillance programs
  21. 0:42under the patriot act in the wake of 9
  22. 0:4511 with the goal of preventing more
  23. 0:47terror attacks and that the programmes
  24. 0:49targeted foreign and overseas suspects
  25. 0:52however many americans seem stunned at
  26. 0:55the apparent extent of the programmes
  27. 0:57and that the broad data collection
  28. 0:58included basic details on americans
  29. 1:01phone records
  30. 1:02oregon democratic senior
  31. 1:05ron wyden asked clapper at a march 12
  32. 1:07congressional hearing whether the nsa
  33. 1:09collects any type of data at all on
  34. 1:11millions of hundreds of millions of
  35. 1:13americas
  36. 1:14widen asked because clapper suggested
  37. 1:16publicly months earlier that stories
  38. 1:18about the nsa keeping dossiers on
  39. 1:21millions of americans were completely
  40. 1:23false
  41. 1:24clapper told wyden no sir it does not
  42. 1:28when asked for clarification he said not
  43. 1:31wittingly
  44. 1:32after the latest stories appeared to
  45. 1:34reveal otherwise clapper said he gave
  46. 1:36the least untruthful answer possible
  47. 1:39clapper said in the letter to feinstein
  48. 1:41that when answering he was confounded by
  49. 1:43the word dossier and challenged by
  50. 1:45trying to protect classified information
  51. 1:48he also said that when answering wyden
  52. 1:51he was focused on whether the u.s
  53. 1:52collected the content of phone and email
  54. 1:55conversations and not so-called metadata
  55. 1:58which essentially is phone numbers email
  56. 2:00addresses dates and times
  57. 2:03he wrote that he simply didn't think of
  58. 2:05the pertinent section of the patriot act
  59. 2:07under which that information can be
  60. 2:09collected
  61. 2:10thus my response was clearly erroneous
  62. 2:13for which i apologize clapper said to
  63. 2:16feinstein in the letter
  64. 2:18snowden's father lon
  65. 2:20meanwhile chastised clapper for his
  66. 2:23answers in an open letter snowden sent
  67. 2:25tuesday to his son
  68. 2:27we leave it to the american people to
  69. 2:28decide whether you or director clapper
  70. 2:30is the superior patriot snowden wrote in
  71. 2:33the letter to his son
