- 0:25radio we we do stuff but something very
- 0:29serious and and and very inspirational

- 0:41all 35 years of your life Behind Bars
- 0:47yes 35 years for me that's almost a
- 0:51lifetime I ain't going to tell my age

- 0:55all I will say this welcome home nice to
- 0:58be here the devil is a liar
- 1:00yes he is always stay prayed up let's go
- 1:04back when was it
- 1:051974 74 you were wrongly convicted of
- 1:09what a rape charge a rape charge and you
- 1:13and how many years were you actually
- 1:15sentenced TW 30 I mean 25 mandatory with
- 1:19a life sentence with a life sentence you
- 1:23first do the mandatory coordin is
- 1:25unlimited at that point and when did it
- 1:28when uh did this happen where did did it
- 1:30happen this happened in Lake Wales Lake
- 1:32Wales in 1974 when racism was pretty
- 1:36much at an alltime high yes and were you
- 1:39wrongly convicted of uh raping a white
- 1:41female no a black female a black female
- 1:43black male a black male yes Wow Wow in
- 1:4835
- 1:50years and when you went to court that
- 1:53day and a Jud said guilty yes and you
- 1:55knew in your heart and your mind and
- 1:58your family your mom and everybody knew
- 1:59that you were innocent
- 2:02yes what was like the first thing in
- 2:05your mind snatch taking away from my
- 2:08mother mhm the first thing I felt going
- 2:12into a world I have no knowledge of
- 2:14uh-huh what I had thought I had paid a
- 2:17lawyer to get me out of uhh but
- 2:19apparently he didn't get me
- 2:21out so let's say first week goes by
- 2:26first month first two years first 3
- 2:28years 10 years yes did it ever be come
- 2:31in your mind like I'm not getting out or
- 2:33maybe I did this or maybe I was wrong
- 2:36did it really play a psychological most
- 2:38definitely throughout the years it
- 2:41did and you just kept crying out that
- 2:44I'm innocent I'm innocent I'm innocent
- 2:46yes all waiting on the new technology
- 2:49mhm which I never dreamed would come
- 2:51about but it came about so they weren't
- 2:53doing DNA testing no it didn't exist
- 2:55nowhere it was just sent to Washington
- 2:58DC
- 3:01uh FBI lab mhm that's where they did the
- 3:05test uhhuh and it was negative even when
- 3:07that came up but they still fought said
- 3:10I was a guilty
- 3:13part so D they back then pretty much was
- 3:17nothing was it more so D yeah okay so 25
- 3:23years we go up to the 30th year at what
- 3:27point did the uh system or govern
- 3:29government or your people like hey let's
- 3:31do this new technology Let's test this
- 3:34and get this man out of prison or even
- 3:36give him a chance to reopen the case no
- 3:38it wasn't like that sir you have to file
- 3:40a certain motion if you didn't file a
- 3:42motion you going to sit there regardless
- 3:44you first have to file a motion mhm I
- 3:47filed a motion of 3.850%
- 3:50[Music]
- 4:00in your same position pretty much your
- 4:01same story that's in prison right now
- 4:04yes and what's taking the government so
- 4:07long or I system so long to exonerate
- 4:09these men well it's a it's a backup
- 4:14right now being that the new
- 4:15technologies is here mhm and from my
- 4:18understanding it takes a lot of money if
- 4:20you if you haven't filed your motion and
- 4:23also a lot of guys haven't filed their
- 4:25motion because they don't know how to go
- 4:27by it mhm
- 4:31you know and and as as I sit here today
- 4:33was January 21st I really want to be a
- 4:38spokesman or a person because three or
- 4:40four years ago Allan crosson out of St
- 4:42Pete yes he was wrongly convicted of a
- 4:44rape and he did 25 years in prison and
- 4:48when I was speaking with him the most
- 4:50profound thing that he said he says
- 4:52people asking me about the money I'm
- 4:54going receive of being compensated he
- 4:56said that's not important the most
- 4:58important thing that I wanted was a 5
- 5:00years I wasn't with my mom cuz his mom
- 5:02died in prison yes and your mother is
- 5:04sick now right yes but I lost my
- 5:06stepfather oh man while I was doing
- 5:09those 35 years mhm which they both made
- 5:12agreement that I have something when I
- 5:14got out way before he passed so they
- 5:18already had had the faith that you it
- 5:19out yes and I know that has to be like
- 5:22the most sadden Harden thing when a
- 5:25mother's child is in prison and she
- 5:26knows your mama know yes your mama know
- 5:29when you write wrong mama know when you
- 5:31stole that Cookie Out the Cookie job she
- 5:33know but so many things Obama yes
- 5:37president yes did you ever think in your
- 5:40uh uh Wildest Dreams or your imagination
- 5:42when you was locked up in that cell that
- 5:45all these things was happened that you
- 5:46were miss out on no never thought i' see
- 5:48it in my lifetime not only mine my
- 5:51mother
- 5:52uh-huh so what is like the hardest thing
- 5:55for you to get adjusted to today today's
- 5:57actually in society today for for me to
- 6:00adjust is the technology mhm otherwise
- 6:03just with people I think I can cope with
- 6:05just the
- 6:06new things that have came about so you
- 6:10still remember the rabbit is and old
- 6:12school dollar phone tearing your finger
- 6:14up and all that stuff we can put you up
- 6:16on that we put you up on the iPhone and
- 6:18all that you know just just stay with us
- 6:19on that I will so when you're out and
- 6:22about in public and a public place do
- 6:24you kind of cringe just because no I
- 6:26don't I don't I think I could fit well
- 6:29in Society M it's just the technology
- 6:31around me uhhuh we'll get that I you
- 6:35know talk to Joe mama he do know
- 6:36anything about a computer at all you
- 6:38know he's just horrible so don't don't
- 6:40feel left out on that part don't even
- 6:42worry about that man but you know like I
- 6:44said man anything we can do for you you
- 6:46know welcome home man like I said man
- 6:48people just have to stay prayed up yes
- 6:50because 35 years that's your life gone
- 6:54and for you to have the attitude that
- 6:56you have are you bitter at all no I'm
- 6:58not bitter I cannot be I left it in God
- 7:02come on preach preacher because I mean
- 7:04preacher sir but I you know what I'm
- 7:06saying I know now what got me out of
- 7:08here yeah what preserved me
- 7:13mhm and I give it to you man I give it
- 7:16to you stay strong uh continue success
- 7:20um it's been you I mean they say God
- 7:23puts you in positions and you know he
- 7:25won't put anything harder on you that
- 7:27you can bear you know and like I said I
- 7:31I I give it to you 35 years I'm innocent
- 7:35crying out somebody hear me and the day
- 7:37comes and you walking with your head
- 7:39high not bit at all people the example
- 7:44of a real man and to my young Brothers
- 7:46you got any messages for my young
- 7:48Brothers out here on the streets well I
- 7:50would like to see as many as I can
- 7:52through my journey M because I think
- 7:54that's God purpose of mine to do this
- 7:56yeah and it don't matter what race or
- 7:59national
- 8:00Okay and like I said I'm with you man if
- 8:03anything we can do to get the message
- 8:04out to help these youth man because it's
- 8:08it's sad it's a sad situation it's a
- 8:10revolving door for the prison system yes
- 8:13it is it's a business business of making
- 8:16money all right God bless continue we're
- 8:20here for you man thank you
