  22. 0:48hiding under a bed with her stepdad's

  27. 0:58reward 2 weeks later Karen Matthews was
  28. 1:01arrested after sensationally confessing
  29. 1:04to the kidnap she and Michael Donovan
  30. 1:07were found guilty of kidnap false
  31. 1:09imprisonment and perverting the course
  32. 1:10of justice and sentenced to 8 years in
  33. 1:13prison kids kidnapped his well with us n
  34. 1:17the woman Karen described as her only
  35. 1:19friend Julie bushby and we've got the
  36. 1:21criminologist and former police officer
  37. 1:23Mark Williams Thomas good to see both of
  38. 1:25you um jul why did you continue to visit
  39. 1:28her because I wanted answers about you
  40. 1:31know I wanted well if you like sh
  41. 1:33Karen's side of the
  42. 1:35story did you how did your your
  43. 1:37friendship changed with her was that
  44. 1:39non-existent did that stop or did you
  45. 1:41continue to like her as a
  46. 1:43person um I want friends with come in
  47. 1:45previous to it um I got friends with
  48. 1:47Karen ral's Channon was missing um
  49. 1:51and well I was really a friend and I
  50. 1:54never not a friend so how have you been
  51. 1:57the one that's ended up she said she
  52. 1:58calls you her only friend and you've
  53. 2:00been the only one to visit her so how
  54. 2:01has that ended up if you weren't friends
  55. 2:03before because I wanted answers it was
  56. 2:06uh I mean I went I went to see her from
  57. 2:08when did she give you answers she gave
  58. 2:10me answers um but whether they're the
  59. 2:13truth or not I don't know do you wanted
  60. 2:15to know
  61. 2:16what why oh you know all the ins and
  62. 2:20outs of it really were there other
  63. 2:21people involved she seems to be hinting
  64. 2:23now there were other people involved do
  65. 2:24you believe that a lot of people believe
  66. 2:25there were other people involved Kevin
  67. 2:27got the brains all the intelligence to
  68. 2:29plot something like this so when you
  69. 2:31first heard when you were there when she
  70. 2:33confessed tell us what happened then uh
  71. 2:35there was me Natalie and
  72. 2:39um a police officer in the car with
  73. 2:41Karen and we were just me and me and
  74. 2:44Natalie were just fighing quite
  75. 2:45different questions that um regarding
  76. 2:48you know what we'd seen after the math
  77. 2:50not before obviously and Natalie came
  78. 2:53out with um a comment and she just said
  79. 2:56yeah it's true and were you firing all
  80. 2:58these questions at her because you you
  81. 3:00thought that she was involved in some
  82. 3:01way no we were firing the questions cuz
  83. 3:03we knew Karen knew something we knew
  84. 3:05Karen knew something that she wasn't
  85. 3:07letting on so what were your thoughts
  86. 3:09when she broke down and said yes she was
  87. 3:11involved I felt sorry for Karen because
  88. 3:14it must have been so hard to actually
  89. 3:16admit in front of you know two friends
  90. 3:19if you like what i' actually that she
  91. 3:22actually did know but see a lot of
  92. 3:24people might be surprised by that to say
  93. 3:26rather than feel sorry that you'd feel
  94. 3:28shocked that a mother could do that and
  95. 3:30and pretend that her own child had been
  96. 3:32kidnapped to do all those appeals on the
  97. 3:34on the television news forget this was
  98. 3:36all around the time of meline mccan as
  99. 3:39well which added to everybody's fear and
  100. 3:41hysteria about the whole community on
  101. 3:43the gbury state really pulled together
  102. 3:45and so was there not a lot of anger
  103. 3:47because you'd all tried to help her you
  104. 3:49moment in time because we were just
  105. 3:50shocked we would I mean you've got to
  106. 3:52put yourself in that position we were in
  107. 3:54the back of a car all of a sudden she
  108. 3:56comes out with the truth me and Natalie
  109. 3:57just looks at each other as thought say
  110. 3:59did we just he that
  111. 4:00right you you just didn't know how to
  112. 4:03respond at that moment in time I felt
  113. 4:04sorry for because obviously she cried at
  114. 4:06the when she came out with it so in my
  115. 4:08eyes it were like a relief on Karen's
  116. 4:11part as well that she'd actually done it
  117. 4:14so when you visited her in prison how
  118. 4:17did you find her did she cling to you as
  119. 4:19a friend did she need your help and
  120. 4:21support did she show remorse how how was
  121. 4:23she never showed her marks but Karen's
  122. 4:24not going to showed the marks when in
  123. 4:26her eyes she's done nothing wrong really
  124. 4:28she really believes that yeah in her
  125. 4:29eyes she's done nothing wrong right okay
  126. 4:32and do you want to put that in context
  127. 4:33Mark then yeah I me this is a a case
  128. 4:36that shocked everybody and I think
  129. 4:38shocked everybody went on for 24 days
  130. 4:40before she was found and then when she
  131. 4:42was found of course she was found in a
  132. 4:44house uh with a member of the family
  133. 4:46someone connected within it and of
  134. 4:48course in the initial stages Karen
  135. 4:50maintained that she had nothing to do
  136. 4:51with it then that story changed and in
  137. 4:53fact there was at least five different
  138. 4:55versions that Karen came up with the
  139. 4:57problem was anyone when they lie they
  140. 4:59start to believe that liee and
  141. 5:01particularly when there was so much
  142. 5:02media coverage she was under scrutiny
  143. 5:04all the time and that was of course very
  144. 5:06much the RO also talks about a lack of
  145. 5:08intelligence do you think she that
  146. 5:10happened to her that she started this
  147. 5:11light and then it's snowball then the
  148. 5:13Press are involved then all the
  149. 5:14community are involved and she didn't
  150. 5:16know how to stop well it's like giving
  151. 5:18giving her a shovel and then from the
  152. 5:19shovel she's gone into a sped and this
  153. 5:21all's got deeper and deeper and deeper
  154. 5:23and I mean it's just BR that we are
  155. 5:28she's she's just dug this off and she
  156. 5:30couldn't get out of it but I mean it's
  157. 5:32like in CT the CTS made so much out of
  158. 5:34his IQ but they never mentioned Karen's
  159. 5:36IQ yeah but Julie um she she's out she's
  160. 5:39served half her jail term and um she's
  161. 5:42out uh we know that now um and a lot of
  162. 5:44people will be annoyed about that well
  163. 5:46what was her time like in prison what
  164. 5:48did you gauge from what sort of
  165. 5:49experience she had in prison she had her
  166. 5:51ups and downs in prison obviously um
  167. 5:53there were a fair few times that I went
  168. 5:55and she had a black eye she told me she
  169. 5:57was assaulted oh yeah she told me me how
  170. 5:59now she gotten so she was frightened in
  171. 6:01prison she was particularly scared in
  172. 6:04one particular prison yeah mhm on the
  173. 6:06visit she were looking around you know
  174. 6:08like this all the time could she ever go
  175. 6:09back to jewsbury no right so what is
  176. 6:12going to happen to her well she's now
  177. 6:14and she's been talked to quite a bit by
  178. 6:16home office Ministry of Justice with
  179. 6:18regards to where they're going to locate
  180. 6:19her clearly they need to put her into
  181. 6:21somewhere where she's not necessarily
  182. 6:23identified straight away they can do
  183. 6:25some of the simple things you know they
  184. 6:26can change her color of her hair they
  185. 6:28can make her look slightly different but
  186. 6:30in reality she still remains who she is
  187. 6:32the problem with managing Karen and
  188. 6:34there's a real problem with this is that
  189. 6:36she is not the most intelligent of
  190. 6:38ladies and as a result of that she won't
  191. 6:41necessarily under understand the
  192. 6:43restrictions that are placed upon her
  193. 6:45and and anybody managing someone like
  194. 6:47this they'll want to be in contact with
  195. 6:49people you know and Julie says herself
  196. 6:51I'm her only friend you know who else is
  197. 6:53there and while she's come out of prison
  198. 6:55it's very much now a process of managing
  199. 6:57her back into the community help with
  200. 7:00that though well she will get help but
  201. 7:01she needs some confidence she needs
  202. 7:03people to be able to talk to and some of
  203. 7:04those will be people that she's got some
  204. 7:06kind of relationship would you be able
  205. 7:08to remain friends with her Julie if
  206. 7:10she's living somewhere else she has a
  207. 7:12different identity that not are you
  208. 7:14putting yourself at risk living where
  209. 7:15you live and the feeling there is
  210. 7:17towards her of remaining her friend well
  211. 7:19the feelings towards Karen it's not
  212. 7:21again it's not about me so You' never
  213. 7:23I've never from I've never I've never
  214. 7:26been threaten by any member of the
  215. 7:28community for for going to visit Karen
  216. 7:31they've not you know they've not
  217. 7:33discriminated me because I go see Karen
  218. 7:35I've never read that I've gone to see
  219. 7:36Karen it is quite interesting because
  220. 7:38Judy's been a visited her in prison and
  221. 7:40of course then receives a letter saying
  222. 7:41to her she's not allowed contact with
  223. 7:42her when she comes out of prison and of
  224. 7:44course she's now cut off her one one
  225. 7:47Lifeline that she's got coming out of
  226. 7:48prison and the offense was horrendous
  227. 7:50let's not get beyond that but the
  228. 7:52reality is is who does she now have
  229. 7:54contact with in the outside world and I
  230. 7:56think what they need to do the probation
  231. 7:57service and the home office is is have a
  232. 7:59thing let's make contact with judie and
  233. 8:01say to her look can we manage this
  234. 8:02within the environment for you to be
  235. 8:04able to talk to each other so there is
  236. 8:06some kind of Lifeline there okay guys
  237. 8:08very very interesting a new chapter and
  238. 8:11all of this begins today and I just
  239. 8:13wonder will she be able to remain
  240. 8:14anonymous I just just wondering I I
  241. 8:16don't think in life I don't think she
  242. 8:18will be able to remain an honorous not
  243. 8:20only because it's very difficult to put
  244. 8:22someone out of prison and have nothing
  245. 8:24around them totally new but also I don't
  246. 8:26think she'll be able to stay within the
  247. 8:28the guidelin that have been set
  248. 8:30no okay thank you very much indeed uh
