- 0:00It's 2026
- 0:03and apparently Kangnam style was 14
- 0:07years ago.
- 0:08What the
- 0:11>> Hey, Tableau.
- 0:13[laughter]
- 0:16>> All right. Uh,
- 0:20give me give me like 10 seconds. Okay. I
- 0:23just need to I just need to
- 0:27>> You can do this.
- 0:30You piece of
- 0:33[laughter]
- 0:34How was it? Seriously.
- 0:37Oh my god. Why am I nervous doing this?
- 0:39I've done this before.
- 0:43I'm talking all the time. I I have no
- 0:46idea why this is why this is making me
- 0:48nervous. Okay. Anyways, happy new year.
- 0:52It's 2026,
- 0:55believe it or not. Time passes
- 0:58pretty fast. It feels like yesterday
- 1:01that Haru was six.
- 1:04She's going to be 16 soon in May. My
- 1:08daughter, I have a daughter, first of
- 1:10all, which is
- 1:14which is still mindboggling.
- 1:17And that daughter
- 1:19is gonna celebrate her sweet 16 this
- 1:22year. That is Oh my
- 1:27I I don't know if I could do this.
- 1:31This
- 1:33truth has hit me hard.
- 1:36She's going to be 16.
- 1:39It's only a matter of time until she's
- 1:42like, "Get away from me, Daddy.
- 1:45Daddy, you're standing too close.
- 1:48Daddy, your voice is too loud. You're
- 1:50talking way too much. [sighs] I can't
- 1:54believe it. 2026
- 1:57to people like me born in the8s.
- 2:012026
- 2:03feels like uh one of those Back to the
- 2:06Future sci-fi dates. It still feels like
- 2:10a time where like cars are flying and
- 2:15we're on hoverboards.
- 2:172026 is unreal to people like me. To
- 2:21people that are, you know, my daughter's
- 2:23age, it just feels like another year.
- 2:26[panting]
- 2:27It's just 2026, not a big deal. But to
- 2:30me, 2026
- 2:33is like a is like a sci-fi number. It's
- 2:36not real. And that's the year we're in.
- 2:41That is just crazy. Anyway, this is Hey
- 2:44Tableau, the new podcast from me,
- 2:47Tableau of Epicai. You may know me
- 2:51already. I'm assuming some of you do.
- 2:54Uh, you may be a fan of Epicai's YouTube
- 2:58show, which is Epicaz. Uh, you may be a
- 3:01fan of my music, Epicai, and my solo
- 3:04music. or you may have been a fan of my
- 3:08previous podcast which was 5 years ago.
- 3:11It's already been 5 years. Anyways, uh I
- 3:14started this podcast because not because
- 3:17I have nothing to do or or I need a
- 3:20reason to get out of the house. I
- 3:21started this because I feel like a lot
- 3:23of our Englisheaking fans uh need
- 3:28something like this and they've been
- 3:30asking it for a long time. um Tableau,
- 3:34can you do a podcast again? And finally,
- 3:37I got around to it. I'm hoping that this
- 3:40podcast can be like an Asian dad that
- 3:43you need. I I have a theory that
- 3:47regardless of where you're from, uh what
- 3:51age you are, where uh you are in life,
- 3:55everyone needs an Asian dad. only one
- 3:59that doesn't scream at you or
- 4:03compare you to
- 4:05neighbors, kids, or, you know, tell you
- 4:07long stories about how they had to like
- 4:09climb mountains to get get to school.
- 4:13And kids these days are too fragile and
- 4:17then slap you across the head because
- 4:21you are the only child that has ever
- 4:25been bad at math in this house. weirdly
- 4:28specific, but
- 4:30[panting]
- 4:32anyways, I feel like this podcast can
- 4:34become that kind of Asian dad. Uh, you
- 4:37can come to me once a week, every week
- 4:40to just let your mind get off all of
- 4:44your worries and troubles and at the
- 4:46same time get some no [ __ ] advice
- 4:49uh, and sometimes feel like someone's
- 4:52just listening to you. I I want this to
- 4:54feel like a conversation that I have
- 4:57with you and that you have with me once
- 5:00a week and hopefully it helps you get
- 5:02through that week. As I mentioned at the
- 5:05beginning, Kangnam style is 14 years
- 5:10old. It was 14 years ago when that whole
- 5:14sensation happened.
- 5:16Can you believe that? I feel like it was
- 5:19like at the most maybe seven years ago,
- 5:21but now it's been 14 years. That's just
- 5:24crazy.
- 5:27Do you all remember? You listening right
- 5:29now, do you remember where you were when
- 5:32Kangnam Style dropped? When that video
- 5:35went viral as hell?
- 5:38I remember because I was sitting next to
- 5:40Sai. I was sitting next to the guy who
- 5:43made Kangnam Style. And let me just say
- 5:46he was just as shocked as anyone else
- 5:50when that song blew up the way it did.
- 5:52Uh he he was beyond shocked because he
- 5:56was hoping for a number one song on
- 5:59Korean charts because he hadn't had a
- 6:02number one in a while, right? And he was
- 6:05very nervous, which was interesting for
- 6:07me to see because he's a sbe of mine.
- 6:11He's an older artist. um one that I
- 6:14looked up to and was always a hitmaker.
- 6:17So, it was strange seeing him nervous. I
- 6:21was like, "That should be doable for
- 6:23you." Like, but when it outdid that by
- 6:27like
- 6:29by like 10,000fold
- 6:31was like number two on Billboard, he was
- 6:34more shocked. So, I remember this moment
- 6:36because I was there, but it still feels
- 6:39like it was like maybe seven to eight
- 6:41years ago, but it's been 14 [ __ ]
- 6:44years. That's
- 6:47Oh my god.
- 6:49So, my daughter was like one at the
- 6:51time. That is crazy.
- 6:55You know what the importance of Kangnam
- 6:58style truly was? It's not that you know
- 7:02personally for him you know it was a
- 7:04great hit it was a big success and um
- 7:09shaped his career after that right so it
- 7:12it was a great thing to happen but for
- 7:14people who just watched this happen
- 7:18especially from from Korea I believe
- 7:20that it was a reminder that unexpected
- 7:26strange things still can happened. It
- 7:30It's sort of like um 2002 World Cup. I
- 7:34don't know if any of you will remember
- 7:37uh I'm assuming a lot of you weren't
- 7:40even born then, but in 2002 at the World
- 7:44Cup, Korea beyond all anyone's
- 7:48expectations just dominated
- 7:51and we got to the final four. At a
- 7:55certain point, it almost felt like we
- 7:57were gonna actually win this thing, like
- 8:01we were gonna be holding the World Cup
- 8:05in our hands. And it it was an insane
- 8:09time because not not only because people
- 8:12were happy or excited, but because
- 8:15behind that happiness and excitement,
- 8:19there was this feeling of wow, totally
- 8:23unexpected strange things can happen in
- 8:26life and maybe it can happen in my life
- 8:30too. And I I believe that was the
- 8:33importance of Kangnam style. It reminded
- 8:37us that sometimes totally unexpected
- 8:42things can happen to people that are
- 8:44underestimated.
- 8:47And these are just two examples. But
- 8:49when we go through life, sometimes just
- 8:51weird things happen, right? Where it's
- 8:54like, "Oh my god, that's crazy." And I
- 8:57believe these moments are very important
- 8:59just just to remind us from time to time
- 9:01that you can have wild dreams, you can
- 9:04have wild aspirations.
- 9:07Uh most of them won't materialize, but
- 9:11once in a blue moon something will.
- 9:14Okay, that got me thinking. Uh what else
- 9:17is hella old? Now let me uh let me
- 9:21search this. Hold on. Tell me a bunch of
- 9:25things that are old
- 9:29or
- 9:30happened
- 9:32long ago
- 9:35that will make me feel old.
- 9:40Okay, let's see. Oh, you're in for a
- 9:43nostalgia punch. Here's a list of things
- 9:45that will absolutely make you realize
- 9:47how far we've come.
- 9:49The first iPhone came out nearly 20
- 9:52years ago, 2007. That's 19 years ago. I
- 9:56remember the very first time I saw an
- 9:59iPhone. I was in Tokyo
- 10:02and we were looking for a Chrome Hearts
- 10:06store. By we, I mean uh this this one
- 10:10guy in my group uh Two Cuts. He was
- 10:13like, "I want to go to Chrome Hearts."
- 10:15And we were looking for the store. And
- 10:18back in those days, we had these phones
- 10:21that basically, you know, were text
- 10:23texting devices, right? And you could
- 10:27access the internet, but it was through
- 10:30such a small screen and such a crappy UI
- 10:37that no one really used it, you know, it
- 10:40was just there. It was just a
- 10:42possibility that no one tapped into. And
- 10:45we're like, how do we find this place?
- 10:47And then this uh friend of ours that was
- 10:49with us, he busts out this metallic
- 10:53device and he's like, "Let me check."
- 10:57And I'm like, "What the [ __ ] is that?
- 10:59What is that thing you're holding?" And
- 11:01he's like, "This
- 11:03is the iPhone."
- 11:06They called it the Jesus phone at the
- 11:07time because it was like the savior of
- 11:11phones,
- 11:13[panting]
- 11:14apparently, the Messiah of phones. So he
- 11:17was like, "It's the iPhone." And he said
- 11:20it in that voice, too. He He wasn't
- 11:23like, "Oh, it's it's the new iPhone." He
- 11:25was like, "It's
- 11:28the iPhone."
- 11:30>> And I was like, "Oh my god." And he
- 11:34opens up an app and it was like a game.
- 11:36It was a toilet paper game. You all
- 11:38remember this, right? You remember this?
- 11:40You listening right now, you remember
- 11:41this? If you were born then, you know
- 11:44this toilet paper game. The whole point
- 11:46of the game was you just keep tapping
- 11:49down and it's just infinite scroll of
- 11:54toilet paper.
- 11:56I don't know why we loved it so much,
- 11:57but he showed me that and he's like,
- 11:59"See, you can do this. You can make
- 12:01phone calls with this." And I was like,
- 12:02"Holy."
- 12:04[laughter]
- 12:05I was like, "Oh my"
- 12:09I was like, "So, what you're telling me
- 12:11here, it's an iPod that I can call home
- 12:14with?"
- 12:16And he's like, "Yes." And I was like,
- 12:18"Take my money." I was like, "When's it
- 12:21coming out in Korea?" And once the
- 12:24iPhone was in my hands the next year, I,
- 12:28you know, it's never left my hand. And
- 12:30at times I wish I I wish I never
- 12:34discovered it. I wish that it was never
- 12:37made because I remember a time before
- 12:42phones, before smartphones,
- 12:46and we like actually like met people and
- 12:49and like sat in the park and stuff like
- 12:53on a bench like we talked,
- 12:58we we held hands, we hugged,
- 13:03we had kids and stuff.
- 13:09And then the iPhone came out 19 years
- 13:11ago and everything changed. Anyways, uh
- 13:15I can't believe that it's 19 years. It
- 13:17feels like maybe
- 13:1913 14 years. Almost 20 years is crazy.
- 13:24That is just insane.
- 13:26I was a big fan of Steve Jobs though. A
- 13:30lot of people are probably like, "Oh,
- 13:32Tableau
- 13:34the fuck." I know. I know all the
- 13:37stories, but you know, people are
- 13:39complicated. I don't have to like or
- 13:43admire 100% of a person, right? There
- 13:47are parts of everyone's life that I
- 13:51admire and certain parts that I don't.
- 13:54But, you know, you can't really pick and
- 13:57choose.
- 13:58You just take the good with the bad.
- 14:01Anyways, I was a huge fan of Steve Jobs.
- 14:03It feels crazy. Like, wait, when did
- 14:05when did Steve Jobs pass away?
- 14:11I remember it was like uh when the
- 14:13iPhone 4S or 5S came out. iPhone 4S
- 14:17because people said that the 4S was
- 14:19iPhone for Steve. It was right after
- 14:22Steve Jobs passed away. He passed away
- 14:24in 2011. So that's so
- 14:28Wow. That's 15 years ago.
- 14:33>> Oh, he passed away when the when the
- 14:35original iPad was only a year old.
- 14:38iPhones still had home buttons. Wait,
- 14:40what?
- 14:42Oh my god.
- 14:44iPhones had home buttons
- 14:47like clickable, right? It like it made a
- 14:50sound and everything, right?
- 14:53that no the fingerprint thing came
- 14:55after. At first I think it was an it was
- 14:58a literal button.
- 15:00I don't know why Chat PT is saying this
- 15:02but and Call Me Maybe hadn't even come
- 15:04out yet.
- 15:06Can you believe this? I asked when did
- 15:08Steve Jobs pass away? And he's like
- 15:10Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th,
- 15:132011. That's almost 15 years ago now. To
- 15:16put that into perspective, the original
- 15:18iPad was only a year old. iPhone still
- 15:21had home buttons and Call Me Maybe
- 15:23hadn't even come out yet. [laughter]
- 15:31What the [ __ ] [laughter]
- 15:35Okay,
- 15:37[laughter]
- 15:38I guess you were a fan.
- 15:41Speaking of songs that came out a long
- 15:44time ago, if you're a K-pop fan, this is
- 15:46going to hit you hard. Big Bang's first
- 15:50big hit, the song
- 15:52Lie
- 15:54was also 19 years ago. That is crazy.
- 16:0019 years ago. I didn't even know Big
- 16:02Bang was 19. Big Bang still feels like a
- 16:06group that came out maybe at the most 10
- 16:08years ago cuz they're still so so fresh,
- 16:11right? So, when did Bang Bang Bang come
- 16:14out? Hold on.
- 16:15When did
- 16:17Big Bangs
- 16:19Bang Bang Banga come out?
- 16:23Cuz kids still listen to this like it's
- 16:25a new song that just dropped like a
- 16:27month ago and it it sounds that way,
- 16:30right? It sounds super fresh.
- 16:33It came out 11 years ago. Oh my god,
- 16:41I am old as [ __ ] Wow, that's crazy. And
- 16:46also, Born Hater was 12 years ago, our
- 16:49song.
- 16:50>> I think this is the one that boggles my
- 16:52mind.
- 16:53>> Born Hater,
- 16:54>> cuz the music video was
- 16:56>> seems pretty
- 16:57>> pretty new.
- 16:58>> Yeah. Still relevant with the whole
- 17:00vertical thing.
- 17:01>> By the way, that Born Hater video,
- 17:03Epicai's born hater video was the first
- 17:05time that vertical videos were abled on
- 17:10YouTube.
- 17:11I know this because when we were
- 17:13shooting the video and the director and
- 17:16I had decided on doing a vertical video,
- 17:20our biggest issue was that we didn't
- 17:22know how people would watch on their
- 17:24computers.
- 17:25So, we even had a display on set and we
- 17:33flipped the screen
- 17:35on its side, right, to watch the
- 17:38monitor. And also that's how we assumed
- 17:42people would watch. [laughter]
- 17:46I'm not kidding. This is how dumb we
- 17:48were. Uh we were like, "Okay, people
- 17:51maybe they can just take their take
- 17:53their laptop and just put it on the side
- 17:55and they can watch it in full screen."
- 17:58And we were like, "But that's
- 18:00ridiculous. Hopefully YouTube will
- 18:03implement vertical videos."
- 18:06What's interesting is even on a phone
- 18:08through the YouTube app, you couldn't
- 18:10see vertical videos in vertical. It just
- 18:13played it in landscape with the black on
- 18:16the sides. And then soon after the video
- 18:19came out, at first it wasn't possible,
- 18:22but soon after it came out, uh YouTube
- 18:24implemented it and there was like an
- 18:26article about how Born Hater played a
- 18:29part and the rest is history. So if you
- 18:33guys enjoy vertical videos, if you enjoy
- 18:36YouTube shorts
- 18:38or any vertical videos, Tik Tok,
- 18:42Instagram reals, you have me to thank me
- 18:46and the born hater director. I feel like
- 18:49I should get
- 18:51something for this.
- 18:55Like YouTube, come on. I deserve a
- 18:59little something for this.
- 19:02Uh let's see what else uh happened a
- 19:04long time ago. Uh Tik Tok launched a
- 19:07decade ago.
- 19:10Do you remember Vine?
- 19:14You're like you were a Vine fan?
- 19:19Vine was basically
- 19:21Tik Tok. It created like a new form of
- 19:26meme and I loved it. That was nine years
- 19:30ago.
- 19:32uh since it's shut down.
- 19:36Let's see what else. Uh
- 19:39do you remember the Damn Daniel? Damn
- 19:42Daniel. The the meme. That meme
- 19:46is 10 years old.
- 19:50Damn [ __ ] I'm Daniel.
- 19:54Damn Daniel. Damn Daniel's 10 years old.
- 20:00Damn.
- 20:01You know when memes are straight up
- 20:04older than some humans, you know you're
- 20:06old. Like, you know, when the the the
- 20:10memes that you used to love
- 20:13are older than like some elementary
- 20:17school kids,
- 20:19you're old as hell. The ice bucket
- 20:22challenge was 12 years ago.
- 20:24I remember doing this. It's on a
- 20:27rooftop, but that was 11 years ago. Wow.
- 20:30That also feels maybe like five, six
- 20:33years ago. Time passes so fast. Frozen
- 20:38Let It Go came out 12 years ago.
- 20:43>> Frozen one. It's 12 years ago. Holy
- 20:47[ __ ]
- 20:49No, it's more than 12 years ago. It's
- 20:522013. So 13 years ago, the Avengers
- 20:56assembled for the first time in 2012. So
- 20:59that's 14 years ago. Game of Thrones
- 21:02ended in 2019. So that's seven years
- 21:07ago.
- 21:09>> What? Wait, 2019 was seven years ago.
- 21:13[laughter]
- 21:17>> Okay, this is the this is the funniest
- 21:21moment.
- 21:22Yes, Grace.
- 21:25She's like, she's like, "Wait, wait a
- 21:27minute." After all this discussion, she
- 21:31wasn't as shocked that the iPhone's 19
- 21:33years old or that or that Frozen was 12
- 21:36years ago or that Damn Daniel was 10
- 21:38years ago. She's like, "Wait a minute."
- 21:41She's like, "Stop the presses.
- 21:452019
- 21:46was seven years ago." Yes, Grace. That's
- 21:51that's how math works.
- 21:54If it's 2026 now,
- 21:582019 was seven years ago. Wow, that is
- 22:01crazy. Despito
- 22:04was in 2017.
- 22:07So that's 9 years ago.
- 22:11You're listening to this right now and
- 22:14either thinking that,
- 22:17"Oh my god, that's that was 10 years
- 22:19ago. That was 14 years ago." Or you're
- 22:21thinking,
- 22:23"That's it. That feels like I don't
- 22:27know. Honestly, I thought that was like
- 22:2830 years ago." If you're the latter,
- 22:31then you're just super old. [laughter]
- 22:38I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but if you're not
- 22:40shocked by any of this, if none of this
- 22:43is blowing your mind and you're like,
- 22:46sounds about right. Well, that was only
- 22:4819 years ago. Feels like it was 34 years
- 22:50ago, man. You're you're really [ __ ]
- 22:52old. And I got to say, I'm like right
- 22:54there. I'm like I'm at the cutline,
- 22:58right? I'm like almost there now.
- 23:02Hold on. Let me take a sip of this
- 23:05unbranded
- 23:06unnamed coffee from this
- 23:11unbranded mug.
- 23:15[snorts]
- 23:17Just letting um all the coffee companies
- 23:20out there know
- 23:23>> this could be I'm sorry. What the hell
- 23:25was that sound? Uh that came from my
- 23:28body. I'm sorry. Okay. I really said Did
- 23:33Did the mic pick that up?
- 23:36Sorry. That's the sound you make your
- 23:38body makes when you hit a certain age.
- 23:41You young people don't know. You
- 23:43listening right now, you're too young to
- 23:45know this. This is the sound your body
- 23:47makes at a certain age. Anyways, this
- 23:49coffee could be yours. Your coffee. It
- 23:51could be your coffee in this mug. And it
- 23:54it could be your company's logo on this
- 23:57mug. This is the first episode, so we
- 24:00don't have any sponsors. We don't have
- 24:03any ads yet because we have to get the
- 24:06numbers first and then we can we we can
- 24:09afford to keep doing this. So, please
- 24:13please share this episode with your
- 24:14friends. Uh
- 24:17oh, Avengers Endgame was seven years
- 24:20ago. It's already been seven years since
- 24:22Tony Stark snapped away uh Thanos and
- 24:25also the entire Marvel franchise.
- 24:29>> [laughter]
- 24:33>> Oh god, I really hope uh the next uh
- 24:35they're making a new Avengers right now,
- 24:38>> you know, Doomsday with Robert Downey
- 24:40Jr. playing Dr. Doom. So, it's like the
- 24:44multiverse thing again.
- 24:47Anyways, I guess they realized in the
- 24:49next in the last seven years that maybe
- 24:53they do need to keep Robert Downey Jr.
- 24:57on screen, right? I got to say it's a
- 25:00it's probably a huge uh risk him taking
- 25:03this role because like we all have such
- 25:07fond memories of Tony Stark, that
- 25:09character. He played it so well and it
- 25:12became
- 25:14um something just beyond a character. Uh
- 25:17it it became like this huge pop culture
- 25:19moment, right? and him being back in the
- 25:24MCU,
- 25:25you know, it can go really bad. [snorts]
- 25:31[panting]
- 25:32I'm I'm just hoping that it's it's
- 25:34really good because they also brought
- 25:35back the directors from Endgame and
- 25:37Infinity War. The Russo brothers, uh,
- 25:40they were they they were responsible for
- 25:42all the really good MCU movies like
- 25:45Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. So
- 25:50hopefully it'll be good. Okay, this is
- 25:51going to blow your mind.
- 25:54This can't be real. Hold on. Oh [ __ ] it
- 25:56is real. Hold on. Let No, I This can't
- 25:59be real.
- 26:01No, I I have to search this again. This
- 26:04This can't be real. Oh my god. The first
- 26:08Harry Potter movie,
- 26:10Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone, not
- 26:13even the book, the movie is a quarter
- 26:16century ago, 25 years ago. Okay, this
- 26:20this went from being fun to depressing.
- 26:27You know, I don't like when people do
- 26:30this. If it's 25 years, just say 25
- 26:34years. Don't say, "Oh, so quarter
- 26:37century ago." What the [ __ ] is that
- 26:39supposed to mean? Why are we using these
- 26:43measurements? Why would you say quarter
- 26:45century ago? Just say 25 years. Like,
- 26:50why are you trying to make us feel bad?
- 26:53Oh my god. In five years, I'm going to
- 26:55be half a century old.
- 26:57>> Whoa.
- 26:59You know, one of those um one of the
- 27:01things that that drives me crazy, you
- 27:04know how in Korea, if you're like 43,
- 27:08they say,
- 27:12which means uh two days from now, like
- 27:15the day after tomorrow, you're going to
- 27:16be 50. And they start this [ __ ] the
- 27:19minute you you hit 41.
- 27:22I swear everyone does it. Even my fans
- 27:25do it. And I'm like, that's nine years
- 27:28later. How can you say the day after
- 27:32tomorrow you're gonna be 50? Even now, I
- 27:36heard it all last year. Because our
- 27:38YouTube show, we're like, uh, we're very
- 27:42childish at times. People
- 27:44[clears throat] will leave comments
- 27:45like, "Can you believe these guys will
- 27:47be 50 the day after tomorrow?" No,
- 27:53the day after tomorrow, I'm going to be
- 27:54two days older than I am now.
- 27:59I still have five years until I hit 50.
- 28:02That's like saying, "Oh, you know, in
- 28:04the day after that they're going to be a
- 28:06hundred. They're going to be dead."
- 28:09[laughter]
- 28:10Please just say 25 years. Don't say a
- 28:13quarter century ago. And it's just
- 28:18Destiny's Child's Independent Woman came
- 28:21out more than a quarter century ago.
- 28:25He's
- 28:26Can we agree to not use this century
- 28:29thing?
- 28:31It's already been 5 years since co ended
- 28:34since CO ended.
- 28:37I feel like the u age of memes and
- 28:40algorithms and just social media uh
- 28:45makes everything seem like it was
- 28:46yesterday. And it also makes things that
- 28:50happened yesterday feel like they didn't
- 28:53happen at all. Do you know what I mean?
- 28:56Like it's great that things that
- 28:59happened uh like 10, 20 years ago
- 29:03feel fresh, right? From a creator's
- 29:06perspective, um, as a person who creates
- 29:10content or creates music, it's great
- 29:13that I have certain songs that I wrote
- 29:16like 15 years ago that people still love
- 29:18like it came out yesterday. That's
- 29:20great. But at the same time, uh, that
- 29:23also means that things we should
- 29:25remember, like we should not forget are
- 29:29forgotten within
- 29:31days.
- 29:33And that's how I feel like when I when I
- 29:36think about that. Yes, Avengers seems
- 29:39fresh. Frozen seems like it was
- 29:41yesterday because we keep seeing the
- 29:43same memes. Um, but at the same time,
- 29:46things we shouldn't forget. We forget
- 29:49pretty fast as well. When did social
- 29:52media come out? That was When did
- 29:57>> Sorry, I should take off this bracelet.
- 29:59This bracelet must be annoying everyone.
- 30:03Hold on, let me take it off. Okay.
- 30:06When did Facebook
- 30:09come out?
- 30:13Facebook launched February 4th, 2004.
- 30:1822 years ago. Okay. Wow. That's that's
- 30:21actually a long time. But at the time,
- 30:23not everyone used Facebook, right? Like
- 30:25it was like a it was a very local thing.
- 30:27like I'm sure you've seen um the movie
- 30:30social network. It started as a Harvard
- 30:33thing and then expanded to like Stanford
- 30:35to other colleges. So at the time it was
- 30:38still pretty pretty local. Let's see
- 30:40what AI thinks
- 30:44uh is the starting date of social media
- 30:47which is ironic because social media
- 30:50basically created this [ __ ]
- 30:53When did social media start
- 30:58in your opinion?
- 31:01Great question. It depends on how you
- 31:04define social media. I know. Just answer
- 31:06the question.
- 31:08Okay. Uh the big bang of social media
- 31:122003 to 2008. Okay. So roughly the same
- 31:15time. The mobile and algorithmic age
- 31:182009. So let's say that we've had social
- 31:21media for like 20 years, right? Most
- 31:24people listening, most of your life has
- 31:27been within the social media age. For
- 31:31example, my daughter uh never lived in
- 31:35in another time, right? But for people
- 31:38like me who are super old,
- 31:43who are going to be a hundred two days
- 31:45from now, um for us, we remember a good
- 31:50half of our lives without social media
- 31:53or or even the internet. So when I look
- 31:56back,
- 31:59to be honest, I can't even
- 32:02I I I it doesn't even feel real anymore,
- 32:05which is crazy because back in those
- 32:07days, if somebody came up to me when I
- 32:08was a kid and was like, at some point
- 32:11they're going to create this thing and
- 32:13you're going to be able to hold it in
- 32:14your hand and any opinion or thought you
- 32:17have, no matter how shitty,
- 32:21[laughter]
- 32:23you can post it
- 32:26and everyone can see it. I'll be like,
- 32:29"Okay,
- 32:31okay,
- 32:33that doesn't sound real at all." But now
- 32:36when I look back, I'm like, the the time
- 32:40before all of that seems unreal. Like in
- 32:44those days, like if you had an opinion,
- 32:46maybe two of your friends knew,
- 32:48[laughter]
- 32:51right?
- 32:52>> [panting]
- 32:54>> You know what I mean? Like if you were
- 32:56really bad at expressing
- 32:59your thought or whatever thought you
- 33:02have or opinion you have and it's and
- 33:05it's something you just shouldn't say,
- 33:07right? Because you haven't worked it out
- 33:09in your mind and or you're just you're
- 33:12you're very bad at articulating your
- 33:14thoughts. Maybe like maybe like one
- 33:17person other than yourself
- 33:19knew that. So, they couldn't cancel you,
- 33:24right? It's just one person that knows
- 33:26that you're terrible at expressing your
- 33:28thoughts. Maybe that's that that seems
- 33:31like nature intended. And what I mean by
- 33:35that is um I don't think humans were
- 33:38created to care [snorts] or even know
- 33:42what's happening everywhere at the same
- 33:44time. I don't know if we are
- 33:49biologically
- 33:51capable of having
- 33:55ubiquitous thought, you know, that
- 33:57that's that's supposed to be like in the
- 33:59realm of like the divine or like a
- 34:02supreme being maybe. But I I'm not sure
- 34:06that humans are supposed to know
- 34:09this much stuff. I think we're supposed
- 34:12to just know what's going on in our
- 34:15families, our neighborhoods
- 34:18at the most, maybe our city. And we're
- 34:21not supposed to know that some dude
- 34:25named Daniel
- 34:27in a whole other continent wore some
- 34:31shoes and someone was like, "Damn,
- 34:34Daniel."
- 34:36Does that make sense?
- 34:38I I I I don't think that's what was
- 34:40intended by nature. Like obviously,
- 34:43right, we weren't born with these
- 34:45devices like attached to our hands. Um
- 34:49so when I look back at in at those times
- 34:53now that seems unreal. Am I making
- 34:56sense?
- 34:57Because if what I just said makes no
- 34:59sense and if you're listening right now
- 35:02and you disagree with me, that's because
- 35:04we're living in this age where I have a
- 35:08mic in front of me and my thoughts are
- 35:11being projected to like tons of people.
- 35:15Back in those days when I was a kid,
- 35:19maybe one friend, okay, my friend Hansun
- 35:25would would know that I have these
- 35:27thoughts. So even if I make no sense,
- 35:31I'm only confusing one person.
- 35:33[laughter]
- 35:34I only have one person disagreeing with
- 35:36me.
- 35:38That's my point. Uh yeah, that's crazy.
- 35:42YouTube was 21 years ago. YouTube was
- 35:46born. When was the first uh the YouTube
- 35:49zoo video, right? Video.
- 35:54The YouTube zoo video, which was the
- 35:56first YouTube video was uh me at the
- 35:59zoo. It was 2005.
- 36:02So, it was 21 [snorts] years ago.
- 36:05Have you seen that video of the YouTube
- 36:09founders uh in this small ass room like
- 36:13completely miserable because they
- 36:16weren't getting traction? So, it's them
- 36:18sitting in this really shitty office
- 36:21space. It looks like a supply room, but
- 36:25they're sitting there and they're down
- 36:27in the dumps because they're no one's
- 36:29watching YouTube. Also, no one's using
- 36:32YouTube. there aren't enough videos on
- 36:34YouTube. So, they're like debating what
- 36:36they can do, but they still have like
- 36:39this sense of humor.
- 36:41A lot of people watch this video as like
- 36:43inspiration because they're like,
- 36:45"Everyone starts somewhere." Even
- 36:47YouTube had these worries at the
- 36:50beginning. But what I noticed was that
- 36:52even though they may be facing certain
- 36:57failure, they're humorous about it. like
- 37:00they're laughing and I watched that and
- 37:03I was like that is the spirit of
- 37:05YouTube. That is probably why they made
- 37:08it, why YouTube became what it became is
- 37:11because they were able to laugh and like
- 37:14have a sense of humor about it. But
- 37:16anyways, that was like 21 years ago.
- 37:20Damn, that's crazy. Time passes so fast.
- 37:24That is crazy. You know what's crazy?
- 37:26Uh, one day it's going to be 2036
- 37:30and we're going to be talking about the
- 37:32Hey Tableau
- 37:34podcast
- 37:36came out 10 years ago.
- 37:38Oh my god.
- 37:41I hope we're still like speaking to each
- 37:44other and stuff 10 years from now. I I
- 37:46don't mean you guys, but um I hope it's
- 37:50not like the future depicted in
- 37:53Terminator like Skynet or or the Matrix
- 37:57machines have taken over.
- 38:00Oh, knock on wood.
- 38:04Uh what else? Pokemon Go came out 10
- 38:08years ago. Hold on. Hold on. Why does
- 38:11Pokemon Go feel like it was five years
- 38:13ago? this 10 years ago. I still have my
- 38:17account. Did you guys play? Do you
- 38:19remember what level you got to? Let me
- 38:21check mine. If you're driving right now,
- 38:23please don't check what level you were
- 38:27uh on Pokemon Go. Pokemon
- 38:30Go. I went into this app for the first
- 38:33time in like years, and it's popping up
- 38:36like all these items. I got daily
- 38:39adventure egg. Hold on. Hold on. I'm
- 38:41just trying to check my level. Hold on.
- 38:43Oh, I got to level 52. Is that high?
- 38:47This was 10 years ago. That's crazy.
- 38:52All of these things are a reminder that
- 38:54time
- 38:56really does fly. It just flies by. You
- 39:01know, I planned today's episode to
- 39:05be like a fun intro to 2026,
- 39:08like a fun start to 2026, but holy [ __ ]
- 39:13all of this really has me thinking,
- 39:18we need to make better use of our time.
- 39:22Time seriously does just fly by. You
- 39:26know how uh as you get older, time
- 39:31feels like it's going faster, like a
- 39:34year seems way faster than it did uh
- 39:38when we were kids. Like when we were
- 39:39kids, summer break
- 39:42really felt like a break. It it it felt
- 39:47almost
- 39:48infinite impossibility.
- 39:51Like when school was out and you had
- 39:54summer break, in your mind, you had
- 39:57enough time to build a treehouse,
- 40:01to discover areas of your town that you
- 40:05never knew were there. Uh you had enough
- 40:10time to learn various different things.
- 40:15uh to hang out with your friends, to
- 40:18spend, you know, countless nights just
- 40:20on the phone, uh to read comics,
- 40:25to do your summer homework, everything,
- 40:28right? Like it it felt like it it was
- 40:31not just an ample amount of time, but
- 40:33like an infinite amount of time. And
- 40:36summer break really felt like summer
- 40:38break. But these days, because I have a
- 40:41daughter, like when she goes on summer
- 40:43break, it might feel like
- 40:46enough time to her, but as I'm watching,
- 40:50I'm like, "Oh my god, school starts
- 40:52again in a week. Her summer break is
- 40:55already over."
- 40:57And you know, you know, they they say
- 40:59it's it's almost, you know, scientific
- 41:02that time feels faster as you get older.
- 41:06And I always assumed that it was because
- 41:08our memory gets bad because you have
- 41:11less things to remember. Like let's say
- 41:14memories are like dots and because you
- 41:18have less dots between 2025 and 2026 or
- 41:23between 2010 and now
- 41:27you have less memorable moments.
- 41:31If you only have like three dots between
- 41:33the last year, then in your mind it'll
- 41:39seem shorter in retrospect than when you
- 41:42were a kid and you have so many
- 41:44memorable moments. Um because everything
- 41:47is new, right? The first time you tried
- 41:51mint chocolate ice cream, the first time
- 41:53you had Hawaiian pizza. Uh weird
- 41:56choices, I know, but I love them.
- 41:59um everything was new and fresh. So
- 42:03they're like huge dots. So the more dots
- 42:07you have uh the longer it feels. And
- 42:12apparently that's that's sort of
- 42:14pseudoscientific
- 42:16that as you get older you have less
- 42:19memorable moments because most of it is
- 42:22routine and there's no sense of marvel
- 42:27or sense of awe anymore when you when
- 42:31you do things because you've probably
- 42:34already done them. And the problem is
- 42:38this is a new worry that I have not for
- 42:41myself but for people in general is that
- 42:45the age of social media. So ever since
- 42:47social media happened we feel like we've
- 42:50experienced things that we haven't. So,
- 42:53not only are we, as we get older, are we
- 42:57uh going into a routine and losing our
- 43:00sense of awe
- 43:03um at experiencing things for the first
- 43:06time. Now we live in an age where we're
- 43:10exposed to so much information and and
- 43:12so many videos and so many experiences
- 43:15of others
- 43:18that
- 43:19even when we do experience something for
- 43:21the first time it doesn't register as
- 43:24the first time like we've seen it
- 43:26somewhere you know uh if I ever go
- 43:30somewhere and I see a bunch of capiaras
- 43:33uh in a hot spring like copy baras in a
- 43:37in a onen like in a hotring. That should
- 43:40feel like a huge dot. That should feel
- 43:44like an amazing sight to see. The
- 43:48problem is I just watched like three
- 43:50hours of videos and shorts about copy
- 43:54bars
- 43:55flocked together in a hotring in Japan.
- 43:58There's a there's apparently a zoo in
- 44:00Japan where they do this. a bunch of
- 44:02copy baras are in a hot spring together
- 44:05and it's like the cutest thing and I saw
- 44:08one video because like was like dad
- 44:11let's search copy baras in hot springs
- 44:15and we did and we watched every video.
- 44:18[clears throat] So now if I go to a if I
- 44:20go to the zoo, if I actually go to the
- 44:22zoo or better better yet, if I'm like
- 44:25just walking through some forest and
- 44:28then there's a there's a natural hot
- 44:31spring and for some reason there's a
- 44:33[ __ ] ton of copy bars inside the spring
- 44:35just chilling.
- 44:37That should shock and amaze me and there
- 44:42should be an explosion of awe when I see
- 44:45this. Like, oh my god, that is this is
- 44:49not only cute, but this is amazing.
- 44:52Like, this like this the this amount of
- 44:57natural beauty shouldn't even be
- 44:59possible and it's happening right in
- 45:01front of my eyes.
- 45:03I won't have this awe anymore or I'll
- 45:06have less of the awe. It'll be cushioned
- 45:08because I've seen so many videos online.
- 45:11Right? And I know this is a hilarious
- 45:14example, but what I'm trying to say is
- 45:17because we're living in uh in in an age
- 45:19where we vicariously experience um
- 45:23everything before we actually experience
- 45:25it, uh our our sense of awe, our
- 45:28dopamine um has already been drained.
- 45:34And that will shorten the dots. that
- 45:38that will minimize the dots or just when
- 45:42every memory uh becomes disposable,
- 45:44we'll just have less dots to look back
- 45:47on. And
- 45:49and for that reason, I I feel like even
- 45:51if you're not as old as I am, uh even if
- 45:56you're in your teens or like in your
- 45:59early 20s, I feel like a lot of people
- 46:02feel like time is passing faster now.
- 46:04before phones, before social media. I
- 46:06think when you were young, you really
- 46:08did feel like a month was a month and
- 46:12only old people like me felt like time
- 46:15was passing faster. But now I feel like
- 46:19everyone experiences time passing
- 46:21faster. I know this because I talked to
- 46:24my daughter about what episode I'm doing
- 46:27today and she cuz she asked me, she's
- 46:29like, "Dad, what are you going to do for
- 46:31your first episode?" And I was like,
- 46:32"Oh, these, you know, did you did you
- 46:34know Kangnam style was 14 years ago?"
- 46:36And she was like, "Really? It was 14
- 46:40years ago." And I'm like, "Bro, you've
- 46:43been alive for 15 years. [laughter]
- 46:48You've you've only been alive for a year
- 46:50longer than Kangam Style." But even she
- 46:53feels like time is passing fast.
- 46:56And I think it's I think it's it's
- 46:59because of our phones and social media.
- 47:04I believe there is only maybe like two
- 47:07things
- 47:09that I have no problem
- 47:12um having people binge on on their
- 47:15phones. I I believe we should be on our
- 47:17phones less, but I believe there are two
- 47:20things that are okay to binge on. first
- 47:23um Epicaz or Epic's YouTube channel. Um
- 47:28that's okay. And also this podcast
- 47:32uh I know it's very selfish of me to say
- 47:34this but um we will work
- 47:38to not just provide a dopamine hit but
- 47:41also you know hit a chord in your heart.
- 47:44We will try our best to teach you
- 47:47something at least to leave you with
- 47:49with at least
- 47:52one medium-sized dot in your mind. We
- 47:55will try to do everything possible to
- 47:58heighten the sense of awe as we live
- 48:01this life. Like I will try I will try.
- 48:03So I'm not going to say get off your
- 48:05phones because I I depend on [laughter]
- 48:08I depend on your phone to get to you. So
- 48:13I won't say that. But um yeah, let let's
- 48:16uh be mindful of these dots that
- 48:20we're creating.
- 48:222026 is a fresh start. We got a new year
- 48:28to create some dots together. And
- 48:32hopefully we can create some good ones.
- 48:34We can create some big ones so that when
- 48:37it's 2027
- 48:39and we look back, we we can say, "Hey,
- 48:41you know what? for the first time the
- 48:43last year, the last 365 days
- 48:48feels kind of like it was 365 days.
- 48:52I have this memory. I have this big dot
- 48:55here, this mediumsized dot here, this
- 48:57small dot here. Hopefully, we can do
- 48:59that together. Please share this video
- 49:02with everyone you know. Uh if you're
