It Only Takes Two Weeks — Transcript

- 0:00I'm just going to get right to the point
- 0:02because I want to keep this video short
- 0:04and then I'll explain my point the point
- 0:08is this
- 0:09if you're in a classroom
- 0:12and there are people in your class
- 0:15and you feel like
- 0:18you are behind those people
- 0:20you feel like
- 0:22there is no way
- 0:24that you could become as good as they
- 0:27are
- 0:29then the point is
- 0:31that it only takes two weeks
- 0:33two weeks
- 0:35you could do it in two weeks
- 0:37and so let me let me explain this
- 0:39because
- 0:40this was actually a comment that someone
- 0:43made
- 0:44in a room I was in many years ago
- 0:48there was this math professor who
- 0:51I didn't really know
- 0:53and he was talking to a student who I
- 0:56didn't really know
- 0:58and the conversation went something like
- 0:59this
- 1:00the student was
- 1:02feeling like you know they were behind
- 1:06and the professor was saying well you
- 1:09know when students feel that way you
- 1:11know I always tell them you know you're
- 1:13really only two weeks behind you might
- 1:15think that you can't catch up to them
- 1:17you might think that you can't be as
- 1:19good as they are you might think that
- 1:21you can't improve your mathematics to
- 1:23get to the level where they are because
- 1:25they're succeeding and maybe you're not
- 1:26but the reality is it only takes two
- 1:29weeks
- 1:30and so I left the room and I thought
- 1:32about it
- 1:33and it didn't make any sense I mean how
- 1:36is this guy going to know that it only
- 1:38takes two weeks right because different
- 1:40people are at different levels so how
- 1:42does this comment make any sense at all
- 1:44you know people say things all the time
- 1:46so why is this true
- 1:48and so here's the rationale
- 1:51when you are in a classroom in college
- 1:54and I'll just use the us as an example
- 1:56but it's probably true in most places in
- 1:59the world if you're in a classroom
- 2:01there's usually some requirement
- 2:03that is needed for you to be there for
- 2:06example in the US when you go to college
- 2:07you take some entrance exam and they
- 2:10place you in a class they say okay you
- 2:13can go into a college algebra okay
- 2:14you're really good at math we can put
- 2:16you in calculus there's a placement test
- 2:19and people always criticize these tests
- 2:21and they criticize the system and that's
- 2:23fine you can criticize it but there
- 2:25exists some sort of placement where
- 2:28people are put into classrooms it
- 2:30doesn't have to be perfect but there is
- 2:32a system
- 2:33and so by some sense everyone in that
- 2:36class is somehow supposed to be equal
- 2:38but we all know that's not true right
- 2:39different people have different
- 2:40abilities different talents different
- 2:42intellects but the system puts us all in
- 2:46this place
- 2:47and so the rationale is that if you work
- 2:50hard enough
- 2:51within two weeks you should be able to
- 2:54catch up
- 2:55and I agree I think it's possible I
- 2:57think it's possible now after years of
- 2:59just reflecting on the statement and
- 3:01thinking it was just bogus I think I
- 3:04think you can do it because think about
- 3:06it everyone is roughly equal if if I
- 3:08think of all the students that I've had
- 3:12in all the classes I've ever taught and
- 3:14I think about
- 3:15some of the worst students like the
- 3:17students that they were just really bad
- 3:21I had something that had really really
- 3:23bad issues with math some that were just
- 3:25not very good
- 3:27and I look at the best students
- 3:29could these students who were really bad
- 3:31actually catch up and you know get the
- 3:34same grade on the test as one of the
- 3:37good students absolutely yes absolutely
- 3:39definitely 100 I know because I would
- 3:43make the tests I know that if they knew
- 3:45X Y and Z they could get a 100 on the
- 3:49test
- 3:50you know and I would go over stuff in
- 3:52class and I would teach everything and
- 3:53explain everything so in theory if they
- 3:55could learn everything I was teaching
- 3:57they could get a 100 every single time
- 4:00they just actually had to learn it which
- 4:02takes a lot of effort and a lot of time
- 4:04and for some people learning those
- 4:07things is actually going to take more
- 4:09time because they're so behind
- 4:11but you could do it in two weeks you
- 4:12could definitely do it in fact it might
- 4:14even take a week
- 4:16the real question is
- 4:18you know how bad do you want it
- 4:20especially if you're in a situation
- 4:22where your math is really bad I mean
- 4:23let's use let's use algebra as an
- 4:25example let's say you're really bad at
- 4:27algebra
- 4:28and you're trying to get better and
- 4:30you're in a class and you're not doing
- 4:32well right there's people in your class
- 4:34that are doing well well maybe they had
- 4:36algebra before in high school maybe they
- 4:38you know they saw it before maybe their
- 4:40parents are Math teachers whatever
- 4:42the only thing you can do in situations
- 4:45like that is just work harder and really
- 4:47just grind you have to grind and grind
- 4:49and grind and you can do it so I just
- 4:51wanted to make this short video to
- 4:53indicate that I think it's possible I
- 4:55really do I think that if you're in a
- 4:57classroom and you're in a bad situation
- 5:00and you're not doing well
- 5:01you can pull yourself out of that
- 5:03situation if you work really hard and
- 5:05you just have to grind
- 5:07one idea
- 5:08is to just do every single homework
- 5:11problem multiple times this is what I
- 5:13did I was obsessed I would do so many
- 5:16math problems and that's all I did you
- 5:19know on weekends too you know people
- 5:20would go to school they do their
- 5:22homework they'd finish it they'd go out
- 5:24with their friends
- 5:25no I didn't do that all right I didn't
- 5:27do that I just stayed home on weekends
- 5:29and studied
- 5:30studied every afternoon after class
- 5:33it's about how bad you want it
- 5:35so it's possible so if you're in a class
- 5:39and you're failing
- 5:41and you're thinking oh can I still pass
- 5:45don't think that way it's not about
- 5:47passing
- 5:48it's about getting a hundred
- 5:50aim to be the best aim to score a
- 5:54perfect score because if you aim high
- 5:56and you miss
- 5:58you're probably still going to do pretty
- 6:00well
- 6:01two weeks right two weeks is all it
- 6:03takes you really can't do it you really
- 6:06can't do it and I thought about this
- 6:07guy's comment for years because I was
- 6:08thinking two weeks it doesn't make sense
- 6:11from the perspective of okay you might
- 6:13have this friend who's in another math
- 6:15club like say you're an algebra and your
- 6:17friend is in calculus three no you're
- 6:18not going to be able to catch up to him
- 6:20in two weeks right but if you're in the
- 6:22same class and you're comparing yourself
- 6:24to another student in your class and
- 6:26that student is getting A's and you're
- 6:28getting F's
- 6:29you can actually Rise From the Ashes and
- 6:32do better and get an A on the next test
- 6:33I've seen people do it they completely
- 6:36change their study habits they go from
- 6:38not taking notes skipping class to going
- 6:42to class every day asking questions
- 6:44doing all the homework going to office
- 6:46hours asking questions multiple times
- 6:49don't be afraid to be annoying a lot of
- 6:51students
- 6:53um I feel like they're lost in class and
- 6:55they're scared to ask questions I used
- 6:57to be that way don't be like me right
- 7:00it's funny I'm telling you not to be
- 7:02like I was but it's good advice because
- 7:04that's something that I should have done
- 7:05do I have regrets no because I don't
- 7:07believe in regrets
- 7:08just regret to accomplish nothing all
- 7:11you can do is change
- 7:12the present and hope that it affects
- 7:15your future
- 7:16because that's all we have control over
- 7:18is the present
- 7:20so it's possible it's possible pick
- 7:23yourself up and work harder you could do
- 7:26it I mean you could do it it's
- 7:28mathematics and it applies to other
- 7:30subjects as well but I have more
- 7:31experience with math so I'm speaking
- 7:33only here of mathematics in mathematics
- 7:35you know if you're in if you're in an
- 7:37algebra class or a trig class and let's
- 7:39say you're using this book here
- 7:40fundamentals of algebra and trig by
- 7:42swachowski great book
- 7:43you know pick up the book do all the
- 7:45problems from the section do all the
- 7:47homework go over all of your notes
- 7:48you're gonna get better you're gonna get
- 7:50better it's possible it just takes extra
- 7:52work and it's about how bad do you want
- 7:55it it really comes down to that
- 7:57so you should know that deep down inside
- 7:58you can do it it's just a matter of do
- 8:01you want to do it a lot of times I think
- 8:03that
- 8:04people think they can't do it
- 8:06and I believe they can it's just do they
- 8:10really want to do you really want to
- 8:12spend that much time doing math I mean
- 8:14there's other things in life that are
- 8:15important too right but if it matters to
- 8:18you you can make the effort and you can
- 8:20succeed and that's all I wanted to say
- 8:21in this video I believe in the two-week
- 8:24rule two weeks in two weeks you can
- 8:27catch up to a classmate
- 8:29if you rock it I think that
- 8:30mathematician who said that I remember
- 8:32his name but I won't mention it and I
- 8:34talked to him once briefly and that's
- 8:37no comment I didn't really know him so
- 8:39but he was right
- 8:41I believe what he said he was a smart
- 8:42man and he was right
- 8:45if you want to learn mathematics I do
- 8:47have courses maths sorcerer.com please
- 8:50use the links on my website if you
- 8:52decide to buy my courses they're
- 8:53actually on the udemy site if you're not
- 8:55a subscriber and you want to subscribe
- 8:57consider hitting the Subscribe button
- 8:59today
- 8:59and it's possible it's possible it
- 9:02really is I want to emphasize that I
- 9:04believe that you can do it if you are
- 9:06failing your class I just from teaching
- 9:09so many years it took me a long time to
- 9:12believe this guy I was like two weeks
- 9:13but he was talking about people in the
- 9:15same class so if you're in the same
- 9:17class with someone and you're comparing
- 9:19yourself and you want to get the grades
- 9:21they're getting I really think it's
- 9:22possible to catch up in two weeks I
- 9:24think that's more than enough time a
- 9:26week maybe two weeks I think that's a
- 9:28lot more realistic to catch up to them
- 9:30and do as well as they're doing I think
- 9:32it's possible
- 9:34anyways until next time good luck take
- 9:37care and keep doing mathematics
