It Jumps Right Out At You — Transcript

- 0:00I always love it when the problem jumps
- 0:02right out at you. Welcome back
- 0:05to Nate the Hoof Guy.
- 0:10Sometimes, even though you know the
- 0:12problem is on a particular claw, you
- 0:14still have to go looking for it. With
- 0:16these, it's right in a specific spot,
- 0:18and it stands right out.
- 0:31And after removing just a few pieces of
- 0:33hoof horn, the extent of the separation
- 0:36becomes known.
- 0:46As I'm trimming here, I'm just looking
- 0:48to remove any of those layers that are
- 0:50already separated. The hoof horn that's
- 0:52still intact can stay in place.
- 1:11I work both above and below the actual
- 1:13lesion itself, removing any of the loose
- 1:15horn as it's tracked out the top and
- 1:17work its way down toward that toe.
- 1:46Right in here is where we got to focus
- 1:47our attention. That's where the problem
- 1:49itself actually lies. We got to trim all
- 1:51the way around that, freeing it of any
- 1:53loose horn that could irritate it.
- 2:01Right up here is where the original
- 2:03defect was.
- 2:09Now, this particular farm is where we
- 2:10first met cow number 61. She was a
- 2:13heifer at the time. This is her then
- 2:16walking in.
- 2:17She had a problem with that right rear
- 2:19foot, and when we looked real close, we
- 2:21were able to actually extract a piece of
- 2:23pedal bone, believe it or not. And then
- 2:25we worked to get her back in shape.
- 2:28Well, that was about a year and a half
- 2:29ago. Here we are now. We're back in and
- 2:32what now what we have to do is we just
- 2:33work to shape this claw up. There's
- 2:36nothing really wrong with it anymore,
- 2:38but we still have to trim it and make
- 2:39sure that it's in the correct shape, and
- 2:41we have to do that more often than we
- 2:43would a typical cow just because of the
- 2:45changes in this claw, it tends to get
- 2:48out of balance much quicker. So, that's
- 2:50why we have to shape it up. But, as you
- 2:52can see, it's looking pretty good now.
- 2:54It's hard to believe what actually
- 2:56happened at that time.
- 2:58I'll put an end screen up at the end of
- 3:00this video if you want to go back and
- 3:01watch those original trims. Now, back to
- 3:04this cow. We're going to get a block on
- 3:05this other claw, and we're going to go
- 3:07back and touch up all those little edges
- 3:09around that. I can do that now. I can
- 3:11get this block on now knowing exactly
- 3:12what the extent of that is, what I have
- 3:14left to work on. I can get the block on
- 3:16and let that gear that glue begin to
- 3:18cure.
- 3:29This glue takes about 10 seconds to
- 3:31begin to set up and about 3 minutes to
- 3:33cure.
- 3:37Right in here is the problem we need to
- 3:38address now. However, that's not where
- 3:40it started. The problem actually started
- 3:42up above in a in that white line, and
- 3:45this area here remains open because of
- 3:48digital dermatitis. So, that's what we
- 3:49need to get trimmed out and fixed at
- 3:51this point. Like I said before, these
- 3:53things will heal eventually on their
- 3:55own. However, we like to speed this
- 3:56process up because if we don't speed it
- 3:59up, that gives opportunity for exactly
- 4:02what happened here to happen. For
- 4:03bacteria to get in there and cause a
- 4:05problem in a different spot altogether.
- 4:27Trying to work carefully along these
- 4:28edges because there's really not much
- 4:30more hoof horn to remove here.
- 4:42Right up here, that's where that
- 4:44original flaw started out. However,
- 4:46you're going to notice as I start to
- 4:47trim this away, that mark's going to
- 4:49disappear. This actually has resolved on
- 4:51its own. However, down below, that's
- 4:54what we still need to fix now.
- 5:08The final solution is the salicylic acid
- 5:11wrap. That's going to take care of this
- 5:12final problem here and get that all
- 5:14finished up. So, now you can see the
- 5:16importance of why we actually remove
- 5:18what we do and why we do it. It's
- 5:21creates an opportunity for other
- 5:23problems to happen if we don't get to
- 5:24these as soon as possible. These cows on
- 5:26pasture makes a little more difficult
- 5:28because they don't show that lameness
- 5:30nearly as easily.
- 5:33Now, she's walking away much better now.
